If We Bestowed A Child’s Grace
from June 2020
by Jessica Mathis
In our walks upon this earth, we will come in contact with people who might not view the world the way we do or have the same heart that we do. It’s so easy to get caught up in what others say and do. We let them bring our positive attitudes down and turn our hearts cold.

In His Word, God tells us, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10). After reading this, it’s easy for us to say, “God, you never had to deal with these people.” You’re right. He had to deal with much worse ridicule and hate during His walk upon this earth.
Forgiving those who wrong us is something I’m sure a lot of us struggle with. We harbor hate in our hearts. Every time we come in contact with these specific people, it’s hard to open up and forget what they might have said or done.
As a parent, I know I sometimes let my frustration and tiredness get the best of me. I sometimes yell when unnecessary or say things
I don’t mean. No matter how angry I might act toward my little three-year-old, she is so gracious and forgiving.
She never holds grudges in her heart and loves no matter what. She bestows grace upon me on a daily basis. Why can’t we all be like an innocent, loving child toward one another?
God didn’t send His Son to die an awful death so we could hate one another. What would all of His suffering be worth? The flesh we are born with harbors hate, deceit, and hurt, but our born-again souls should be better.
Instead of treating those who hurt us with the same attitude and heart they showed us, let’s try to be more childlike and show them grace and mercy—forgiving and understanding—no matter how hurt we might be. Let’s live so Jesus’ death wasn’t all for nothing.
