Grandfather’s Fences

Psalm 79:13: “So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: we will show forth thy praise to all generations.”

Being blessed to be raised out in the country, I got to enjoy living next to a small farm. My grandfather stayed busy working a full-time job and taking care of that farm. He had pastures that held his cattle and sometimes even a horse. Hopefully, the livestock would stay in the pasture, but sometimes they would get out. They would find that downed fence and stray across it into danger. My grandfather had a cattle dog that he would use to help get those cows rounded up and back into the fence.

After getting them rounded up, it would then be necessary to find out where they had gotten out. Maybe some tree had fallen against the fence and it ended up on the ground. You would have to walk the fence line to find that break in the fence. It was a job that had to be done and the fence repaired quickly before the cow got out again. My grandfather has been home with the Good Lord for over 20 years now. I still see those fences and think now how much work he put into having his farm. The care of the fences was something he had to do on a daily basis.

He tended the farm God blessed Him with.

The fence line has now grown up, and that view he had looking off his front porch down into the pasture can no longer be seen. Life is like that: it changes. We can look back and remember the good times. I am so thankful that I have those memories that he made with me. I learned a lot from watching him. We remember those times someone took time with us and we learned from watching them.

Take time today and make that memory. Those people will not always be in your life. Make that memory now! You will not regret that you did it. As you work on making that memory, also take time and give God thanks for allowing them to be in your life. Who knew that watching my grandfather repair a fence would one day be a special memory to me?
