The Power of Gratitude by Dr. Jeff Dabbs

We live in a world that seems wired for complaint. Just spend five minutes scrolling online or listening in on a conversation at the grocery store and you will hear plenty of grumbling about politics, prices, weather, or even sports teams. Negativity spreads quickly, and before long, it steals our joy. The Bible, however, gives a different way of living: gratitude. Far more than a polite “thank you” after a meal or a card in the mail, gratitude is a posture of the heart that reshapes the way we see life. It lifts our eyes from what we lack to the blessings God has already poured into our lives. The apostle Paul put it plainly, “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NASB). Gratitude reframes life. Notice Paul doesn’t say, “Give thanks for everything,” as if we should be thankful for evil or suffering itself. Instead, he says, “in everything, give thanks.” That’s a big difference. Gratitude doesn’t deny the reality of pain or hardship; it chooses to see God’s hand even in the middle of the difficulties. Think about being stuck in traffic. Inevitably one person fumes, honks the horn, and lets anger ruin the day. Another takes the same situation, turns on worship music, thanks God for a reliable car, and prays for the people in the other vehicles. Same traffic jam, very different spirit. Gratitude reframe’s life’s frustrations into opportunities to trust God. Paul wrote in another place: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7 NASB). Thanksgiving and anxiety cannot occupy the same heart at the same time. When we practice gratitude, we shift from obsessing over problems to resting in the faithfulness of God. Gratitude doesn’t magically erase our struggles, but it changes how we carry them. It turns our focus from the storm to the Savior. Gratitude isn’t only vertical (toward God); it’s also horizontal (toward others). A thankful spirit 8

strengthens marriages, deepens friendships, and builds community. Saying “thank you” is more than manners — it’s ministry. When Paul wrote to the churches, he often began with words of thanksgiving for them (Romans 1:8, 1 Corinthians 1:4, Philippians 1:3). He understood that gratitude spoken aloud encourages people in ways criticism never can. If you want to brighten someone’s day, tell them how grateful you are for them. Gratitude doesn’t come naturally; it must be practiced. Here are a few simple ways: (1) Keep a gratitude journal. Write down three things each day that you are thankful for. Over time, this rewires your perspective. (2) Speak thanks out loud. Don’t just think it; say it. Expressing thanks to God in prayer and to people in person multiplies joy. (3) Turn complaints into prayers. The next time you start to grumble, stop and reframe it as a prayer of thanks. (4) Anchor your gratitude in Scripture. Read psalms of thanksgiving, such as Psalm 100, regularly to remind yourself of God’s goodness. Gratitude is not just a holiday theme — it’s a lifestyle. It transforms our outlook, strengthens our relationships, and draws us closer to God. And here’s the best part: anyone can start practicing it today. As Colossians 3:15 NASB reminds us: “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.” In a world filled with negativity, gratitude is more than polite — it’s powerful!

Dr. Jeff Dabbs is the senior pastor at Spring Creek Baptist Church, Rome, Georgia. He has authored Sunday School material and several books.

The Gift of a Plan: Why Financial Preparation Is an Act of Love

with

Money Matters Jamie Peak November is a month when many of us pause to count our blessings. We gather around tables with family and friends, reflect on what we are thankful for, and appreciate the people and provisions God has placed in our lives. But gratitude isn't just about appreciating what we have today. Good stewardship also means thoughtfully preparing for tomorrow. When we think about financial planning, it's easy to focus on numbers—investment returns, account balances, Social Security benefits and retirement income. But behind every one of those numbers is something much more important: the people we love. Having a financial plan can be one of the most practical ways we care for them. Proverbs 21:5 tells us, “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance.” Planning doesn't mean we believe we can predict or control everything the future may bring. It simply means we are being intentional with what we have been given. For those approaching or already enjoying retirement, that may mean asking some important questions. Will my income last throughout retirement? Have I prepared for rising healthcare or long-term care expenses? Are my beneficiaries up to date? Does my family know where important financial and estate documents are located? If something happened to me tomorrow, would those I love know what to do?

Are there ministries, churches, or charitable organizations we hope to support? What would we like to leave to our children or grandchildren? And perhaps most importantly, what values do we hope to pass along with whatever financial legacy we leave behind? A legacy isn't measured only by the amount of money someone inherits. It can also be found in the example we set—living generously, planning wisely, caring for others and being thankful for what we've been entrusted with. As families gather this Thanksgiving, take time to count your blessings. Enjoy the meal, the laughter and even the chaos that often comes with having everyone under one roof. And somewhere between the turkey and pumpkin pie, remember that preparing for tomorrow can be another way of giving thanks for today. Because ultimately, a good financial plan isn't simply about protecting your money. It's about protecting what your money is meant to accomplish—and the people you love most. *Medicare Annual Enrollment is still going through December 7th. These aren't always comfortable conversations, especially around the holidays. But having them can provide something incredibly valuable - peace of mind. Financial preparation also gives us the opportunity to think beyond our own needs. What causes are important to us?

Check Out God’s Benefit Package by Stephen Griggs

When we think of a “benefits package,” we usually are talking about our employment situation--health insurance, vacation days and retirement plans. Yet, tucked within the opening verses of Psalm 103, King David gives us a glimpse of a divine benefits package – one that is truly out of this world compared to the one we might have at work. David opens this Psalm not with a plea but with praise. He is doing some “self-talk” to his own soul, and he commands himself to “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name!” (Psalm 103:1 ESV). What would compel this total-hearted worship and praise? Verse 2 answers that question: “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.” Gratitude grows – and explodes into praise and worship – when we remember who God is and all that He has done for us. David then opens up God’s Benefits Package and lists these rich benefits one by one. Forgiveness: The First, Foremost, and Foundational Gift

God leads with grace. “He forgives all my sins…” (Psalm 103:3a NLT). Sin is our greatest problem, separating us from the fullness of God’s presence and peace. God’s forgiveness is graciously granted, not earned. God’s forgiveness is total and complete. He does not just forgive some sins, or the ‘less serious’ sins, but all our sins. This is the starting point of relationship and the foundation upon which all the other benefits rest.

King signifying we are a part of royalty as children of the King. Think of God’s mercy and love being wrapped around us like a royal robe, keeping us safe, warm, protected, and sustained. God’s covenant love and mercy are the core attributes of our King, and He not only shares them with us – He wraps us up in them, so we never have to feel afraid.

Healing: Restoration for Body and Soul

Satisfaction: Lives Filled with Good Things

“Who heals all our diseases” (Psalm 103:3b). While this includes physical healing, its scope reaches further to encompass the deep soul-healing God does with our emotional, spiritual, and mental ailments. While healing may not always come quickly, completely, or in the way we expect, Scripture is clear that God is the Great Physician, tending wounds both seen and unseen. He is Jehovah Rapha, the God who heals.

“Who satisfies you with good things…” (Psalm 103:5a). God does not give us trinkets of little lasting value. He gives us lasting goodness, joy, purpose, and peace. Like a banquet for the heart, mind, and soul, He nourishes us with abundant provisions so that we can lead a life without lack (Psalm 23:1).

Redemption: Rescue from Destruction

“…so that your youth is renewed like the eagles” (Psalm 103:5b). God doesn’t just sustain us, He revitalizes us. God’s Spirit gives us daily renewal, strength, and the ability to soar above life’s storms. “Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16 NIV).

“He redeems me from the pit/death… ” (Psalm 103:4a). God ‘buys us back’ by rescuing us from despair, hopelessness, and death – a life apart from Him that leads to loss. God is the lifter of heads and the restorer of hope. Redemption is not only about rescue but about restoration. He sets our feet on solid ground, giving us new purpose and direction. Crowning: With Steadfast Love and Mercy (103:4b) God’s unchanging love encircles us like a crown bestowed by our 14

Renewal: Spiritual Energy to Soar

God’s Benefits Package – freely given, deeply satisfying, and eternally secure. Steve Griggs is Teaching Minister, Central Church of Christ, Dalton, GA.

Gò0dNews for Parents

Parenting by Heart: Dazzled and Awed by Jan Merop

Some of my fondest memories of parenting are of watching the world through the eyes of my children. Snow fell ferociously outside. Even the streetlights were shadowed by the storm. Then suddenly, many bright lights illuminated the darkness. Sparkling reflections from the snow responded like jewels once hidden and now revealed. A night crew had come to remove the snow. Like my son’s miniature construction crew—which he would set up in imaginary situations in our living room—they came to life. I couldn’t keep this to myself. So I awoke my young son and had him come to the big picture window, where we watched the scene unfold two stories down and half a block up our hill. But actually, my greatest enjoyment was in watching his expressions. It doesn’t take much to dazzle children. They respond with amazement over a tiny ant crawling on the ground, or a lizard escaping every attempt to be caught. Well, actually, it does take much to dazzle children because the Bible tells us the ant is a creature we’d do well to learn from. “Go to the ant, you sluggard,” says Proverbs 6:6 NKJV. “Consider her ways and be wise, which, having no captain, overseer or ruler, provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.” Children have in them the heart to be dazzled and awed. This uniquely human trait prepares us to worship our Creator God and Savior. That’s why a little ant is “much” in the way of “dazzle” because God is the designer. When we can point to an ant carrying food, a lizard defying capture, or more majestic sights like the ocean crashing on 16

shore or the mountains silently exuding strength, we have an opportunity to introduce our children to the One who has put the capacity of dazzling awe within them. Not for the purpose of appreciating the creation only, but for the purpose of directing their thoughts to God, who is more majestic and beyond imagination than any of his creations. We were children once. We, too, were delighted by blowing on dandelion dust and watching it take flight. We were overwhelmed by seeing the creatures in the zoo or watching birds come to our backyard feeders. But somewhere along the way we may have let the wonder die—losing sight of the Creator behind the creature. As parents, we can show our children that the creation aches with the telling of its wonderful Creator. We can help them discover Him so that they can be dazzled by His love, power, strength, and creative power. And, most importantly, we can guide them to choosing to have a relationship and know the One who created them and who is beyond description. If we don’t teach our children to be dazzled by God, they will find another object of worship because worship is inherent in our beings. Let’s help our children learn to meditate on the glorious splendor of God’s majesty and on His wondrous works as we read about in Psalm 145, developing thankful hearts. But first, let’s wake up to the brilliance ourselves so we can revel in the reflection in our children’s eyes. Jan has been writing her weekly column, Pause…and Consider, for 37 years, encouraging readers in their Christian walk. She and her husband Ken reside in Cleveland where they enjoy Bible study, ministry, hospitality, and the great outdoors. Three married sons, five grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren are their joy. They belong to The Church at Grace Point.

Gò0dNews for Worship

Living Daily in Awe by Corrie Vallance

Residuals from the pandemic of 2020 still have a lot of Americans searching for truths, stability, and safety. As a society, we can be full of hate and disarray during times of uncertainty. Acknowledging this downfall may be the very thing that reminds us to try a little bit harder to be helpful instead of harmful. As Believers, we know Christ has given each member of His body a spiritual gift to strengthen, build up, and manifest the Church in His Word. These spirits are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. Fear of the Lord refers to a specific sense of respect, awe, and submission to a deity. When we come into awe of something, we become passionately driven to share His word, His works, and His guidance with others. With our passion in place, our knowledge we have earned, and our strength, we can then start to counsel others in the way of the Spirit, giving others solitude and peace to find their piety in Christ. In counseling, we find compassion, empathy, and understanding. We see that not everyone is perfect, but that we must be patient and kind. In this part of our walk, we find love and what it truly means to love one another. 1 Corinthians 13:4-5 NIV: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.”

When we choose to love one another instead of persecute each other, we cover the sins of many!

Are we living this way? Are we truly moving mountains by faith or merely telling great stories of old?

1 Peter 4:8 ESV: “Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.”

Believers, we need to be living these revelations. This is where we can find the Kingdom of Heaven. It has been rooted in our minds and blown over our bodies as a spirit we inherited upon Christ’s rising.

Christ’s death was out of LOVE. God loves us and wants to save us! 1 Peter 4:10 ESV: “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”

And finally, we can remember the wisdom from our earthly wanderings. For if any trial comes upon us, should we not be grateful for the sufferings, as we suffer with Christ?

Are we not more powerful with love than with arguments? Do we have something to prove with love, or is it unconditional? Who are we to bring wrath when appointed only to bring grace and love?

1 Peter 4:12-13 ESV: “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.”

With Christ dwelling within us, we can cover their sin through love by praying for them, being graceful, and hopeful. These are the mandates to the Believers. This is the direction He has asked us to walk.

18

So let us live our best lives right here, in the storm, while we can exercise the spiritual gifts Christ breathed over His nation upon His resurrection. He is not interested in our dinners or church services, our rituals or traditions. He is after our ways, after our hearts, and our minds to seek Him first so that all other things can be manifested in Christ.

Gò0dNews for Friends

The Blessing of True Friendship by Karen D. Jeffery

Friendship is one of God’s precious gifts. A true friend is someone who loves you, encourages you, prays for you, and helps you walk in the ways of the Lord. While many people may come and go throughout life, a godly friend remains faithful through both joyful times and difficult seasons. The Bible teaches that friendship should be built on love, honesty, kindness, and faithfulness.

15:13-15 KJV, Jesus said, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends… Henceforth I call you not servants… but I have called you friends.”

One of the best-known verses about friendship is Proverbs 17:17 KJV: “A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”

The Bible also reminds us to choose our friends wisely. Proverbs 13:20 KJV says: “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”

A true friend does not love only when life is easy. They remain by your side when you are hurting, discouraged, or facing trials. Their love is not based on what they can receive but on genuine care and compassion.

The people we spend time with influence our thoughts, attitudes, and actions. Choosing friends who love God and live according to His Word helps us remain faithful in our own walk with Christ.

God also teaches us that good friends help each other grow spiritually. Proverbs 27:17 KJV says: “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”

Friendship is strengthened through kindness, forgiveness, patience, and love. No one is perfect, and every friendship will face challenges. When we forgive one another, pray for one another, and bear each other’s burdens, our friendships become stronger. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 KJV says: “Two are better than one… For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow.”

Just as iron makes iron sharper, faithful friends encourage one another to become stronger in faith. They speak truth with love, pray together, and help each other stay close to God. Instead of leading one another into temptation, they encourage righteousness and obedience to God’s Word. Honesty is another important part of friendship. Sometimes a true friend must gently correct us when we are wrong. Proverbs 27:6 KJV reminds us: “Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.” A faithful friend speaks the truth because they care. Loving correction may not always be easy to hear, but it can help us grow in wisdom and keep us from making harmful choices. Jesus Christ is the greatest example of perfect friendship. He willingly gave His life for those who believe in Him. In John 20

What an amazing blessing to know that the Savior calls His faithful followers friends. His love is perfect, unchanging, and everlasting.

God desires His children to love one another with sincere hearts. A faithful friend is a blessing that should never be taken for granted. Let us strive to be the kind of friend who encourages, comforts, forgives, and points others to Jesus Christ. As we follow His example of love and faithfulness, our friendships can bring honor and glory to God while being a source of strength and joy to those around us. Remember: To have a friend, you have to be a friend first.

That Bugs Me! by Dr. Rob Debelak

Mark 1, Matthew 3, Luke 3, John 1 He did not speak from a seat of imperial authority, nor was he aligned with the religious aristocracy (Luke 3:1-2). Undaunted by worldly power and corrupt belief systems, Zechariah’s son came from a home committed to holiness and reverence for the Spirit (Luke 1:5-80). The Baptizer’s unconventional ministry drew conscious-stricken listeners and head-strong skeptics to the wilderness. His uncommon garb and unusual diet still raise eyebrows! A unique forerunner of the Messiah, his words held out hope and heroically confronted sin.His ministry setting, odd attire, peculiar cuisine, and pointed message shaped John as God’s representative for challenging society’s embedded sinfulness. Desert John preached in the untamed wilderness, warning of impending judgment from an inconvenient place. The crooked, uneven terrain off the mainstream path depicted the need to equalize spaces of disparity (Isaiah 40:3-5 and Luke 3:5-6). Away from town centers, the arid Judean landscape recasts the memory of Sinai, the ancestral wilderness of encounter, where Israel first washed in preparation to meet God (Exodus 19:10). John readied his audience, baptizing them in a barren place. He preached repentance and God made the desert fruitful (Isaiah 35:1). In the wilderness multitudes found remedy or heard judgment for their spiritual uncleanness (Matthew 3:1-12). Dress John’s wardrobe was a critical fashion statement. Astute observers would recognize the wilderness prophet Elijah had once exposed the Northern Kingdom’s covenantal failure clad in similar garb. Attired in animal skins and a leather belt (2 Kings 1:8), Elijah opposed King Ahab and dismantled Queen Jezebel’s false religious system, challenging a formidable number of its religious representatives (1 Kings 18). 22

Malachi predicted a return of this prophet (Malachi 4:5), and John did not disappoint. The desertdwelling Baptizer arrived in camel’s hair and a leather waistband (Mark 1:6); he confronted brazen leaders for their illicit lifestyle (Luke 3:19) and scathingly rebuked Jerusalem’s religious power block (Matthew 3:7-10). Diet Ezekiel ate a scroll, describing the pleasant taste of honey (Ezekiel 3). The recipient of Revelation likewise ingested a book, sweet to the taste but later bitter (Revelation 10:9). Between these two prophetic testimonies, John the Baptist ate locusts and wild honey (Mark 1:6). The lyrics of Psalm 19:6 cite the sweetness of God’s Law; insects were another matter. Locusts were acceptable fare per the Law (Leviticus 11:22). However, Moses warned a plague of locusts was punishment for neglecting/dishonoring God’s Word (Deuteronomy 28:38,42). Joel’s mention of locusts drew on this severity of covenant violation when calling for prayer and spiritual reform (1:4). If ‘you are what you eat,’ John consumed what consumed him. Like ‘talking with a full mouth,’ his diet of honey and locusts spoke volumes. What he (symbolically) put in his mouth is what came out in a message of hope and judgment. iApostasy bugged this Judean preacher. Declaration Those turning from sin, he baptized. Concerns from stigmatized outcasts (crowds, tax collectors, and soldiers; Luke 3:10-14) were treated with honesty and ethical balance. Sin was offensive to God, and its punishment would be so severe that John even warned his adversaries (Matthew 3:7-10). In humility, he denied personal prophethood; humbly, he pointed to the coming Judge (John 1:19-27). Demise John died in prison. Irked by iniquity, he was incarcerated for opposing sin, hated because of what he stood for, and executed by a lustful leader (Mark 6:14-29). Commended by Jesus (Matthew 11:7-15) and eulogized by the anonymous writer of Hebrews (11:38), the world was not worthy of John. i Credit to an unknown source. FEATURED COVER STORY

GRIT & GRACE

Expect the Unexpected Walk into Grit & Grace and there is a good chance something will catch your eye before you know exactly what it is. Maybe it is an old piece of furniture with just the right amount of character. Maybe it is a piece of original artwork, a handmade treasure, or something that would make the perfect gift for someone who is particularly hard to shop for. Around another corner, a new display has appeared, another small business has added something to its shoppe, or a familiar vendor has brought in a fresh collection. Since January 2020, that element of discovery has become part of the experience at Grit & Grace. The discovery that greets shoppers immediately is the history of The Old Woolen Mill, which was built in 1890. Originally called Cleveland Woolen Mill and later known for many years as Hardwick Woolen Mill, the mill operated until the 1970s, when it moved to a more modern space. The initials “HWM” can still be seen at the top of the smokestack outside Grit & Grace’s entrance, and the faded words “Cleveland Woolen Mill Manufacturer of Pants” remain visible near the top of the building. After sitting vacant for a couple of decades, the property was purchased by the Coleman family in 1999. They began the process of renovating it for its next stage in life. Owner Melody Miles explains, “The space where our store is located was a storage space when we first viewed it at the end of 2018. Creating the market required months of renovation. Electricity and plumbing were brought into the space, windows were replaced, painted metal beams were scraped and repainted, and interior walls were added while preserving the brick and industrial character of the original mill. During that time we had our youngest daughter, so it was a whirlwind of an experience!” Today, more than 125 independent small businesses are represented throughout the market, creating a collection as varied as the people behind it. Vintage dealers share space with artists, makers, artisans, boutique owners, and specialty retailers. Each shoppe and mini-shoppe has its own look and personality, giving shoppers plenty of reasons to slow down and take a closer look. 28

goodnewscm.com // November 2026

Showcasing Stories For the people who fill those spaces, Grit & Grace has become a place to build something of their own. Each vendor as well as each item has a story. Independent retailers can establish a retail presence while becoming part of a larger community of entrepreneurs. A maker can introduce customers to handmade work. An artist can put original pieces on display. A boutique owner can build a collection around a particular style. A vintage dealer can keep searching for the pieces that make someone stop and say, “I’ve been looking for one of these.” That variety of history, pairing with current trends, and potential for future expression is part of what makes the market work. The businesses have room to grow, experiment, and change, creating the appeal for shoppers. Yes, it’s the very reason they keep coming back. The merchandise changes continually, and each visit brings the possibility of finding something that was not there the time before. For the Grit & Grace team, watching those businesses develop has become one of the most rewarding parts of the journey. Melody shares, “One of the most rewarding parts of Grit & Grace is watching a small business grow. We get to see people take an idea or something they are passionate about, put it in front of customers, and build from there. When their business succeeds, we feel like we get to celebrate right along with them.”

29

A Shopping Experience That Resists Being Categorized Like a kaleidoscope, the selection shifts focus as the light of each season comes through. Vintage finds remain a favorite, joined by handmade goods, original art, home décor, furniture, clothing and accessories, jewelry, specialty gifts, and products made by local artisans. The result is a shopping experience that resists being easily categorized. There is something wonderfully unpredictable about that. A shopper may arrive looking for a birthday gift and leave with a piece of furniture. Someone searching for home décor may discover a local artist. A person simply stopping in to browse may find the perfect Christmas present before December has even arrived. And because the businesses are independently owned, their displays reflect the people behind them. There is creativity in the way items are arranged, personality in the collections, and a sense that every corner has its own story.

Shop Local, Support Community The relationship between Grit & Grace and the surrounding community has grown over the years. Customers have embraced the market as a destination for unique gifts and everyday treasures, and their continued support gives small businesses an opportunity to reach new customers and build lasting relationships. That support is especially visible during the holiday season. Make plans to visit Grit & Grace’s Christmas Open House, November 6–8, 2026. Shoppe owners fill their spaces with holiday décor and gift ideas, while fresh products, special displays, sales, refreshments, and giveaways add to the celebration. The excitement carries into Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, when the market welcomes shoppers looking for one-of-a-kind gifts and opportunities to support independent businesses. For many customers, these visits have become part of the holiday tradition. 30

Living History, Enduring Appeal After growing alongside its vendors and customers, Grit & Grace has emerged into something special: a gathering place for people who enjoy finding the unexpected and supporting the people who create, collect, curate, and sell it. More than 125 small businesses now have a place within its walls, and each one adds another layer to the story. There is always another display to discover, another vendor to meet, another perfect piece waiting to be found. That may be the enduring appeal of Grit & Grace. There is no single way to experience it. Cleveland’s history is within the walls as well as some of its brightest and best current retailers. MAKE-AHEAD CORN PUDDING

Thanksgiving in the mountains is filled with the flavors of harvest—roasted meats, rich gravies, and the comforting sweetness of corn. Corn pudding has long been a staple on Appalachian tables, especially during the holidays. It’s creamy, slightly sweet, and a perfect balance to savory dishes. What makes corn pudding so special is how simple it is to prepare ahead of time. You can mix it the day before, refrigerate it, and then bake it fresh just before the meal. The warm, golden custard that emerges from the oven is always a crowd-pleaser, offering a gentle sweetness that complements turkey, ham, or smoked pork. This corn pudding could be described as “melt-in-your-mouth sunshine”—a nod to the way its buttery richness brightens even the heartiest plates.

32

goodnewscm.com // November 2026

Ingredients: •

1 (15-ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained

•

1 (15-ounce) can cream-style corn

•

1 cup whole milk

•

3 large eggs

•

¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

•

¼ cup sugar

•

1 teaspoon salt

•

½ teaspoon black pepper

•

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

•

Optional: 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese (for a savory twist)

Instructions: 1.

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 2-quart baking dish or casserole.

2.

In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, melted butter, sugar, salt, and pepper until smooth.

3.

Stir in whole kernel corn, cream-style corn, and flour until well combined. If using cheese, fold it in here.

4.

Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.

5.

Cover tightly with foil and refrigerate overnight or up to 24 hours.

6.

When ready to bake, remove from fridge and let sit at room temperature for 20 minutes.

7.

Bake uncovered for 50–60 minutes, or until the top is golden and the pudding is set in the center (a knife inserted should come out clean).

Corn pudding brings a creamy, comforting note to the Thanksgiving table—rich without being heavy and sweet or overpowering. Plus, making it ahead lets you focus on the big day’s hustle while knowing a little bit of homemade warmth is waiting in the oven.

WHEN MORNING GILDS THE SKIES a German hymn translated by Edward Caswall, 1854 (Public Domain)

34

goodnewscm.com // November 2026

When morning gilds the skies my heart awaking cries: May Jesus Christ be praised! Alike at work and prayer, to Jesus I repair: May Jesus Christ be praised! When you begin the day, O never fail to say, May Jesus Christ be praised! And at your work rejoice, to sing with heart and voice, May Jesus Christ be praised! Whene’er the sweet church bell peals over hill and dell, May Jesus Christ be praised! O hark to what it sings, as joyously it rings, May Jesus Christ be praised! My tongue shall never tire of chanting with the choir, May Jesus Christ be praised! This song of sacred joy, it never seems to cloy, May Jesus Christ be praised! Does sadness fill my mind? A solace here I find, May Jesus Christ be praised! Or fades my earthly bliss? My comfort still is this, May Jesus Christ be praised! To God, the Word, on high, the host of angels cry, May Jesus Christ be praised! Let mortals, too, upraise their voice in hymns of praise, May Jesus Christ be praised! Be this at meals your grace, in every time and place; May Jesus Christ be praised! Be this, when day is past, of all your thoughts the last, May Jesus Christ be praised! When mirth for music longs, this is my song of songs: May Jesus Christ be praised! When evening shadows fall, this rings my curfew call, May Jesus Christ be praised! When sleep her balm denies, my silent spirit sighs, May Jesus Christ be praised! When evil thoughts molest, with this I shield my breast, May Jesus Christ be praised! The night becomes as day when from the heart we say: May Jesus Christ be praised! The powers of darkness fear when this sweet chant they hear: May Jesus Christ be praised! No lovelier antiphon in all high Heav’n is known than, Jesus Christ be praised! There to the eternal Word the eternal psalm is heard: May Jesus Christ be praised! Let all the earth around ring joyous with the sound: May Jesus Christ be praised! In Heaven’s eternal bliss the loveliest strain is this: May Jesus Christ be praised! Sing, suns and stars of space, sing, ye that see His face, Sing, Jesus Christ be praised! God’s whole creation o’er, for aye and evermore Shall Jesus Christ be praised! In Heav’n’s eternal bliss the loveliest strain is this, May Jesus Christ be praised! Let earth, and sea and sky from depth to height reply, May Jesus Christ be praised! Be this, while life is mine, my canticle divine: May Jesus Christ be praised! Sing this eternal song through all the ages long: May Jesus Christ be praised!

Southern Heritage Bank is now Park National Bank It's official: Southern Heritage Bank is now Park National Bank. The merger announced last year has brought together two community banks that share a commitment to serving customers and cultures built on caring for communities, philanthropy, volunteerism, and leadership. While the signs just changed to reflect the Park name in late August, the important things are staying the same. Customers will find the same friendly faces delivering the same unbelievably good service, and all office locations and hours remain the same. Among the many benefits of the partnership, customers now have access to enhanced digital services, extended hours for customer care and more financial services. In addition, commercial and small business customers now have more borrowing options to help them with their financial futures.

“We will continue to be deeply rooted in the communities we serve,” said Jeremy Dean, Market President of Park National Bank’s East Tennessee Division. “We’re still the same local people delivering on the same promise, but now with even more possibilities. “Bottom line, our name has changed but our commitment to you and our teammates who serve you remains strong.” The merger was officially completed in February, and since then the two banking teams have been working to unite systems and processes to ensure a smooth transition for customers. “We’re excited to be a part of the Tennessee market and serve more people in meaningful ways,” said Park National CEO and President Matthew R. Miller. “Together, we’ll continue to demonstrate that banking is about more than finances – it’s about making a lasting impact on the people around us.” Park National Bank welcomes customers and community members to stop in and connect. Local bankers are here to help, and they look forward to serving you. 36

One Awkward Moment by Hayden Lanier

Recently, after church one Sunday night, I ran into a local variety store to purchase some plastic cups for an event at work. As I approached the checkout counter, I noticed that I was the only customer in the store. When I asked the cashier how she was doing, she replied sarcastically that she was “living the dream.” Not knowing how to respond to this break in the usual exchange of pleasantries, I smiled feebly and racked my brain for what to do next. At that moment, I felt compelled to share the gospel with her. I wanted to ask her if there was a way I could pray for her, and hope to start a conversation that way. Instead, I froze, accepted the receipt, said “Have a good night,” and walked out to the parking lot. As I did so, I was kicking myself for not obeying the prompting to attempt a more meaningful exchange. I’m sure that I’m not alone in this experience, and this was far from the first time I have felt led to share Jesus with someone and regretted my inaction. As Christians, we know that we are called to share the gospel. We talk about it, read about it, and preach about it; however, those one-on-one conversations can be difficult to attempt. Maybe we are scared that we will be rejected or made fun of by the person we are sharing with. Perhaps we feel that we don’t know enough and won’t be able to answer the questions they may have. However, whatever excuses we might have, the command to share our faith remains the same. My failure to obey the Great Commission reminds me of when Moses received the call from God to go to Pharaoh and lead His people out of slavery. Moses gave God several excuses, one of which was that he was “not eloquent … but I am slow of speech and of tongue” (Exodus 4:10 ESV). God’s reply was, “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, 38

or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak” (Exodus 4:11-12 ESV). What a humbling passage. When we don’t feel adequate, God gives us these assurances: He made our mouths, He goes with us, and He will give us the words. We don’t have to rely on our own strength or knowledge. We don’t have to be talented or charismatic. We simply have to be willing to lay down our pride and obey the God who gave us the gifts of speech, hearing, and sight to use them for His glory and gospel. The Christian band Casting Crowns has a song entitled “One Awkward Moment.” This song speaks about how sharing Jesus can be challenging and creates an awkward moment, but we must look past that and share Him anyway, because “One awkward moment could be the one that saves a life.” Since that encounter, I was convicted of my need to share the Gospel in my everyday, personal life. The Gospel is an urgent message. We don’t know who will accept it or how long they have to respond. Therefore, we must be obedient in sharing when the Lord gives us opportunities. Yes, it is difficult. Yes, it can be awkward. Yes, we may feel inadequate. But we go forth in the power and strength of Christ who promised us, “I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20 ESV). See www.setyourmindabove.com for more from Hayden Lanier.

Hayden Lanier is a follower of Jesus who is passionate about sharing the good news of the gospel through writing. He graduated from Shorter University in 2025 and now works as an elementary school teacher. To read more of Hayden’s writing, you can go to setyourmindabove.com.

Thou Knowest Not What Thou Sayest! by Charles Finney

Proverbs 18:2 KJV: “A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.” Brethren and sistren, saints and sinners, coffee drinkers and potluck bringers—I greet thee this fine Lord’s Day in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and with a hope that thou hast not burnt thy biscuits this mornin’. Now, let us dive deep into the book of Proverbs, that holy scroll of wisdom and roasted truths. For it is written: “A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.” Or, in simpler terms, “People be talkin’ nonsense just to hear themselves talk.” Amen? Let me tell thee, we live in an age where everyone hath a tongue and a platform. Verily, they speak on matters they knoweth not—weather, politics, glutenfree diets, and the Book of Revelation— most oft with the same level of ignorance! Consider Brother Ricky. Now, I love him dearly, but last week he said the mark of the beast was his Wi-Fi router because it ended in 666. I said, “Brother Ricky, the beast ain’t comin’ through Comcast!” But he was convinced. He hath read one blog post and now thinketh he’s the Apostle John reincarnated. Lord, help him. Or Sister Marlene, bless her heart. She once told the whole prayer circle that “Armageddon” was a shampoo she bought at Walmart. I said, “Sister, you 42

might be washed in the blood, but that ain’t the kind of cleansing the Bible’s talkin’ about!”

saith, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”

We often speak without understanding, beloved. Our tongues wag like an untrained dog chasin’ squirrels. James 3:6 KJV saith, “The tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity.” And let me add—it is also the fastest-moving muscle when gossip is near!

When thou knowest not what thou speakest, silence is golden. As Grandma used to say, “Better to be thought a fool than to open thy mouth and remove all doubt.” That’s somewhere in Second Opinions.

Yea, even I have stumbled. One time I preached a whole sermon about “Jonah in the belly of the ark.” I was tired, saints. I had stayed up too late watchin’ “The Ten Commandments.” Afterward, Deacon Earl pulled me aside and said, “Preacher, I believe thou hast mixed thy metaphors.” I replied, “Verily, I am but dust...and decaf.”

So next time thou art tempted to speak on a thing thou understandest not— pause, pray, and Google it. Amen? Let us be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slower still to jump to conclusions. For the Lord hath given us two ears and but one mouth—possibly because He knew we’d be twice as foolish with the latter.

But hark! There is good news. For the Lord, in His infinite mercy, knoweth our foolishness and yet still loveth us. Even Peter, who putteth his foot in his mouth more oft than sandals, was chosen to lead the church. Peter, who said, “Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended” Matthew 26:33 KJV). Then he denied Christ thrice before the rooster even warmed up his vocal cords!

In closing, remember: the tongue can build up or burn down. So keep it holy, keep it humble, and if all else fails—stuff it with a deviled egg from the fellowship hall. Amen and amen!

Brethren, let us not be like clanging cymbals or loud Facebook comments. Let us seek understanding. Proverbs 4:7

Count Your Blessings by Katie Loveless

Have you ever heard the expression “attitude is everything?” Attitude really is important. The Bible says so in Proverbs 23:7 where we gain the phrase adapted from the KJV, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” We can believe the Bible. It tells us what is true about God and ourselves. Here the Bible tells us that the way we think will shape who we become and what we do. In other words, our thinking steers the direction of our hearts. My middle son, Sawyer, came into my room with a Scholastic book. The book is written about different types of animal feet and has a very interesting cover of a boy with aardvark feet. Sawyer cannot

yet read at 4 years old. He made an assumption about truth based on what he saw on the cover. He pointed at the animal feet, the boy on the cover, and the aardvark. He assumed the boy turned into an aardvark by touching the animal’s feet. That is not at all what the book says.

My prayer for you as you take time to do this is for you to ask God to help you unearth truth. I pray you will dig into God’s Word. I challenge you to learn from the Bible and its teachings so you can read for yourself what is true about God and you.

The book actually presents interesting facts about animal feet and stirs your imagination to think about what it would be like to have animal feet. In the case of the boy with the aardvark feet, he could quickly unearth buried treasure. However, we don’t need animal feet to uncover treasure. We can find it in our hearts by letting Jesus in. We can even find it in our own backyard by taking time to count our blessings.

Finding the truth is as simple as 1, 2, 3. If you are ready for adventure, take the 1, 2, 3 challenge below.

Katie Loveless is a social worker, wife, and mother of five boys. She is a student of grace who enjoys writing, gardening, and empowering others to pursue stability.

The 1, 2, 3 Challenge Challenge 1

Challenge 2

Explore in your yard, at a park, or help a grownup tend to a houseplant. As you do, take note of the shapes and edges of the foliage around you.

Find a verse in the Bible that mentions counting, thankfulness, or discovery. What treasure did you find? What is the truth you found and want to keep?

Is it round like a circle or does it have points? Talk about it as you think about yourself, God, and the truth. As you notice round or circular things, can you think of anything that surrounds you like a circle? Consider a house, blanket, or chairs around a table. How do those things form a circle and bring protection or comfort? As you notice points, consider the direction they point to and how many points there are. Talk about relationships and resources that point us to the truth. Count your blessings for every point. For a leaf with three points, identify three things you are grateful for. For a leaf with five points, name five things you like. For a fun family challenge, find a pine cone and try to count all the points. As a family, name a blessing for every point on the pine cone.

44

Challenge 3 Keep it in your heart. Pray about a person or thing you counted as a blessing. Make this month one where you ask God to bless and protect someone or something you discovered is a blessing in your life. Partner with a grownup to help you pray or to talk about what God has put on your heart in prayer. Consider whether God is prompting you to serve with an act of kindness to keep the blessings coming.

Lyrics: Louisa M. R. Stead (1882) Music: William J. Kirkpatrick Public Domain

’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, Just to take Him at His Word; Just to rest upon His promise, Just to know, “Thus saith the Lord!” O how sweet to trust in Jesus, Just to trust His cleansing blood; Just in simple faith to plunge me ’Neath the healing, cleansing flood! Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus, Just from sin and self to cease; Just from Jesus simply taking Life and rest, and joy and peace. I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee, Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend; And I know that Thou art with me, Wilt be with me to the end. Refrain: Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him! How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er! Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust Him more!

Why I Love These Lyrics ’Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus by Sharon Eldridge

Have you ever read Ecclesiastes 3? It’s not a famous chapter of the Bible. And yet, we can learn from Solomon. Even with all of Solomon’s knowledge and wisdom, he couldn’t fathom, he couldn’t understand all that God has done from beginning to end. But God has it all planned out. God is in control. All we have to do is trust Him. We can trust to look for the good in every outcome. Even if the circumstances are hard, we know that if we love Him and trust Him, He has a plan to bring glory to His name. I think of Job and all the horrible circumstances he endured, but he never stopped trusting God. He had no idea that his faith was being tested. God allowed it to happen because He already knew the end of the story. He already knew the outcome. Mom always reminded me of Job. It didn’t matter how much she went through, she never stopped trusting in God. She had eternity set in her heart. In her weakness, He was her strength. She also had a mother who never stopped praying for her. The testimony of faith from both of them allowed me to have a better understanding of God’s grace and love for us. I recognize His power to transform hearts to be more and more like His. Holy, holy, holy the Lord God Almighty who was, and is, and is to come! The lyrics to this time-tested hymn comfort me as I sing it. It is so sweet to trust in Jesus. Those who trust in Him will find rest. All of His promises are “yes and amen!” He is the same yesterday, today and forever! “I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee, Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend.”

Sharon Eldridge is a newly published writer, excited to see where the Lord leads as she develops a new blog.

Gò0dNews for Families

Never Out of Reach by Timothy Tate

Psalm 69 NKJV begins to read in verse 1, “Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck.” This urgent plea for help in trouble, as I continued to read through verse 15, reassured me once again. I had been reading my Bible daily since the week before Christmas according to a structured reading program. Today, March 6th, happened to be the day my eyes and heart fell upon this portion of scripture. It was on this day, March 6th, thirteen years earlier, that my brother Stephen, age 60, and my Uncle Walter, age 80, were lost at sea. Their fishing trawler went down in rough seas about 17 miles off the coast of Maryland. There was a third man on the boat who was able to get into a survival suit, and four hours later, be rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard. He reported that the boat was swamped by a 25-30 foot rogue wave, violently tearing apart the wooden vessel. He was thrown onto the back deck, suffering a sprained shoulder, bruised face, and blackened eyes. The U.S. Coast Guard searched the cold Atlantic seas for 72 hours before giving up on finding my brother and uncle. I wondered if my brother and uncle had time to call out to God. I didn’t want them to suffer any more than the circumstances sadly required, but God is most compassionate in providing an unspeakable peace that surpasses all understanding, even unto death. About a week later, our family and friends gathered at my brother’s small country church in eastern North Carolina for the memorial service. I grew up there and fished

commercially as well for 16 years, traveling far away to distant waters. This was our family’s heritage. I was no stranger to the pathos that accompanies such tragic events, having survived two boat sinkings myself. We had lost three other family members to the sea over the years. My wife and I made the 10 hour journey from our home in Tennessee, where we have resided for 41 years. This was not the sort of family reunion one would want, but isn’t that too often the case? We travel miles to say goodbye to our loved ones, but do little to say hello while they’re still with us. Since I left home and fishing for good in 1984, I sometimes thought of the hardship my brother Stephen endured, but he loved commercial fishing. He lived a sort of wide-open life, which is often the way of one who spends so much time at sea. It seemed like you had to make up for lost time when you had a few days on land. I needed reassurance of my brother. Regretfully, we seldom talked during those many years apart, but most positively, God answers prayer! My first cousin Kim pulled me aside at the memorial service and told me that over the last three months of Stephen’s life, when he wasn’t at sea, he was at church every Sunday and had spent much time at the altar. I knew in that moment as we hugged, that Kim felt the same warm assurance that I did; the same reassurance that I felt today as I read Psalm 69:1-15. We are also exhorted in 2 Corinthians 6:2 NKJV, “Behold, now is the accepted time; now is the day of salvation.” Don’t wait!

Timothy Tate is a Lee University alumnus of 1990. He and his wife, Lisa, and family have lived in Cleveland, TN, since 1985. Tim is a retired postal carrier/commercial fisherman and enjoys writing memoirs and poetry.

"Ships in Distress off a Rocky Coast" by Ludolf Backhuysen

PSALMS 69:1-15 NKJV 1] Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. 2] I sink in deep mire, Where there is no standing; I have come into deep waters, Where the floods overflow me. 3] I am weary with my crying; My throat is dry; My eyes fail while I wait for my God. 4] Those who hate me without a cause Are more than the hairs of my head; They are mighty who would destroy me, Being my enemies wrongfully; Though I have stolen nothing, I still must restore it. 5] O God, You know my foolishness; And my sins are not hidden from You. 6] Let not those who wait for You, O Lord God of hosts, be ashamed because of me; Let not those who seek You be confounded because of me, O God of Israel. 7] Because for Your sake I have borne reproach; Shame has covered my face. 8] I have become a stranger to my brothers, And an alien to my mother’s children; 9] Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me. 10] When I wept and chastened my soul with fasting, That became my reproach. 11] I also [e]made sackcloth my garment; I became a byword to them. 12] Those who sit in the gate speak against me, And I am the song of the drunkards. 13] But as for me, my prayer is to You, O Lord, in the acceptable time; O God, in the multitude of Your mercy, Hear me in the truth of Your salvation. 14] Deliver me out of the mire, And let me not sink; Let me be delivered from those who hate me, And out of the deep waters. 15] Let not the floodwater overflow me, Nor let the deep swallow me up; And let not the pit shut its mouth on me.

Harvest Time by Dorothy Teague

"The Artist's Garden at Eragny" by Camille Pissarro

Thanksgiving is right around the corner. It’s the time when we get to enjoy all those foods we’ve harvested from our gardens. I can just see all the casseroles on the table now! Harvest time always takes me back to childhood memories on the farm, when we worked hard during the summer in the vegetable garden to be able to can and preserve those foods for eating later. What I learned early in life I’ve carried with me into adulthood, which is to appreciate being able to work alongside the Lord to grow and harvest my own food. I enjoy feeling like a modern-day pioneer woman, from planting seeds to the day I can gather in the fruits of my labor. The word “harvest” means to gather, when you reap what you have sown, when crops are ripe and ready to be gathered (Merriam-Webster). But there is a greater Harvest that we should be concerned with and that is the Harvest of Souls for Christ. The Bible talks a lot about the importance of sowing and reaping. Galatians 6:7-9 NIV says: “A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please the flesh will reap destruction, and whoever sows to please the Spirit, will reap eternal life. Let us not grow weary in well doing, for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest, if we do not give up.” As a Christian, it’s important to obey Christ’s commands so that God may be glorified and we can fulfill our purpose for being here. We are to sow good seeds into others’ lives by not only being a godly example as we go about our daily lives, but also share with them the “good news” of Jesus Christ. We must work toward the harvest of souls so that all may know Him and go to meet Him one day. 50

But, no one likes a pushy, “churchy” Christian that spouts scriptures and then doesn’t follow through with what the Word tells us to do; our words and actions must line up. 1 Peter 4:10 NIV says: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” We have been entrusted by God to use what He has given us to reach others for the kingdom of Christ! If you have ever planted a vegetable garden, then you know when the vegetables are ripe, that is the time you must harvest them. If you don’t harvest at just the right time, the crop will be lost! The time is now for us to go out and tell others the “good news” about Christ! It is time to gather souls for the Harvest! One day, Christ will come back to harvest all the souls that belong to Him and I believe that day could be soon! Then, He will gather us together at a great supper, the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Just like the days are getting shorter at this time of year, so are the days and the opportunities to gather souls to Him. “Lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!” (John 4:35 KJV).

Dorothy Teague is a Tennessee native, who resides in McMinn County with her husband, Lewis, on their farm. After completing 31.5 years as a teacher in the Bradley County School System, she is active in her church at Eastanallee Baptist Church where she is a member of the choir and praise team.
