A New Year, Built on Cooperative Values How Good Foods Co-op Puts Principles into Practice As we enter a new year, I’m often reminded that not all grocery stores are built the same. Good Foods Co-op exists for a reason—and that reason is rooted in cooperative principles and values that guide our decisions, from the products we carry to how we support our community. The start of 2026 is a shared moment, and I’d like to invite you into a closer look at how these principles shape our co-op and the role each of us plays in bringing them to life. One of the most meaningful differences of a cooperative is who gets to shape the choices. At Good Foods Co-op, we’re guided by the cooperative principles of Autonomy & Independence and Concern for the Community, supported by the values of social responsibility, self-help, and self-responsibility. Our independence allows us to make local decisions about what belongs on our shelves—decisions shaped not only by our values, but by the people who shop here. Across all departments, our buyers prioritize products that reflect what our community cares about: local and organic options, items made by co-ops or small producers, responsibly sourced goods, and products that support a health-focused, values-driven approach to everyday shopping. Your purchasing choices, requests, and feedback directly influence what we carry, reinforcing the cooperative belief that a store should reflect the needs and priorities of the community it serves. Our concern for the community reaches beyond the aisles. Through our Give Where You Live program, local nonprofit partners apply to participate, and our owners vote on which organizations become roundup partners—turning spare change at the register into meaningful local impact.
