Just Breathe...
As we take a moment to pause and remember our beautiful summer days at Goodell Gardens & Homestead, we remember the blue skies and the multiplicity of color. We are grateful that we were able to gather and enjoy the floral displays reflected in the bright sunlight. We also had many opportunities to learn and refresh. We have had a great summer, working on trails and establishing new garden spaces. Our beautifully planned events were well attended and our education programs have been amazing. We have almost completed Lincoln’s Lookout, which is our new Cove observation deck and we will be opening the deck with a Dedication Ceremony after the new season begins next year. Members will be able to observe the different species of wildlife that frequent the Cove. During one of the days that we worked on the deck, we saw and heard a couple of Carolina Wrens, Northern Cardinals, an Eastern Towhee, Gray Catbirds, Red-winged Blackbirds, a Downy Woodpecker, a Northern Flicker, a Red-bellied Woodpecker, Wood Duck, Turkey Vultures, Killdeer, European Starlings, Common Grackles, Black-capped Chickadees, Red-tailed Hawk, American Crows, and a Bald Eagle that landed and called in the trees across the cove. These sightings were verified by birding expert James R. Hill, III, current member of the Board of Directors. We are starting construction on our Labyrinth which we hope to dedicate at the Tree Hugger Trail Run on May 4th. A labyrinth combines the imagery of the circle spiraling into a meandering but purposeful path. Gardens offer us a perfect opportunity to reconnect to our true selves and remember our place in the natural world. The Labyrinth will offer individuals the opportunity for reflection and peace-filled walking. We look forward to programming experiences that optimize the use of the Labyrinth. So, as we put the gardens to sleep for a long winter’s nap, we look forward with renewed enthusiasm to a vibrant and meaningful season in 2024. Be present in the moment… Just Breathe… Dr. Marian S. A Letter from the Director Dear Friends, Next year will be the 20th Anniversary of Goodell Gardens & Homestead! While our organization was first formed as The Goodell Project after Carrie Goodell’s passing in 2001, the first time our gates were open to the public was 2004. As with most landmark anniversaries, this is an opportunity for reflection. Looking back at photos of the early years, I am in awe of how much your support has helped Goodell Gardens grow. And that phrase that echoes in my head continues to ring true: Goodell Gardens exists because of Carrie & Margaret, but it grows because of YOUR support. The amount of growth we’ve seen in even just the last five years is incredible. We’ve re-sided our historic Bank Barn, developed new gardens, addressed deferred maintenance on the Welcome Center, upgraded gardens and grounds equipment, increased cultural and educational programs, grown our field trip program exponentially, upgraded our on-site amenities, built miles of trails, added a boardwalk and an observation deck overlooking Edinboro Lake Cove: Lincoln’s Lookout, and I’m certain that list is not complete. Your support, combined with earned revenue, grants, and donations from your fellow philanthropists have made all of this growth possible. GRANT FUNDED FIELD TRIPS Volunteer Educators Needed
Wow! Erie Gives 2023 was a huge success!
In 2023, we hosted nearly 700 students during 14 field trips. Several of these were funded by an Investing in our Future Grant from Erie Insurance.
Thank you so much to the 101 donors who gave on this day of generosity. Together we raised nearly $10,000 for Goodell Gardens! Funds were used to help us continue creating beautiful gardens and natural spaces where people visit to Enjoy, Gather, Learn, and Refresh.
The grant project, which covers instruction and transportation fees for one grade level at every elementary school in Erie’s Public Schools and two grade levels for both elementary schools in General McLane School District, will continue in Spring 2024. We have also been awarded grant funding from PA DEP to add additional field trips for Erie middle schoolers and to create an outdoor teaching space. Field trips are led by Education Coordinator Andrew Sipple with support from volunteers. If you’re interested in volunteering during field trips in 2024, please fill out a volunteer application on our website at goodellgardens.org/volunteer.

Lincoln’s Lookout nears completion Observation deck overlooking Edinboro Lake Cove named in memory of the late Lincoln Daniel Bufalino Photos by James R. Hill, III, Marian Beckman, Amber Wellington, & Randy Walker
We are so honored to be the home of a memorial to the late Lincoln Daniel Bufalino, an educator, athlete, man of nature, and beloved member of the Edinboro community who passed in 2010. An observation deck overlooking Edinboro Lake Cove will be named Lincoln’s Lookout, in his memory. A team of amazing volunteers has nearly completed the structural work on the Lookout, the newest feature along our trails. The project will be dedicated to Lincoln once work is completed in the Spring, and was funded by the Lincoln Daniel Bufalino Foundation, Erie County Gaming Revenue Authority (ECGRA), and Suzanne Winterberger. The deck will be used to observe wildlife - particularly birds - that live in or visit Edinboro Lake Cove: a wetland that rises and falls with the levels of Edinboro Lake.
