Zags learn from the best Sue Niezgoda
Professor, civil engineering
Civil engineering professor Sue Niezgoda has built her career around a simple truth: healthy rivers make healthy communities.
At Gonzaga’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, she’s brought students into that mindset by creating one of the most hands-on, student-centered research programs in the Inland Northwest. Washington boasts nearly 74,000 miles of rivers and streams, and Spokane County alone holds dozens of creeks and lakes that feed into the Spokane River. It’s an ideal place to teach students how rivers behave – and how to help restore them.
Each year, Niezgoda leads students through a full stream restoration workflow. They begin with a watershed assessment, studying how water, sediment, and nutrients move through a creek. Then they spend five intensive days in the field collecting data and designing beaver dam analogs (BDAs) to improve the stability and ecological health of the stream. Students build the structures by hand and discover results: clearer water, slower flow and the beginnings of new habitat.

Kristine Hoover believes leadership is about courage, curiosity and choosing to act when it matters. As a professor of organizational leadership, she helps Gonzaga students understand how their values can shape the world around them. “Leadership isn’t a title,” she often tells students. “It’s the way we show up for others.”

Hoover’s work extends far beyond the classroom. She was honored as a YWCA Woman of Achievement for her commitment to racial and gender equity, a recognition rooted in years of community based leadership and research on how people learn to build more just organizations. Most recently, Hoover helped preserve the story of Holocaust survivor and Dutch resistance member Carla Peperzak through a documentary called “Carla the Rescuer.” For students, Hoover models leadership that is both intellectually rigorous and deeply human. She invites students to see themselves as people capable of courage – and as people the world needs most.

The Memories that will Make you a Zag Passed on by Zags through stories, pictures and memories – the Gonzaga experience is rooted in traditions that date back generations. From the daily rituals, to the moments that truly define your four years, here are some you won’t want to miss.
Before a few high-profile men’s and women’s basketball home games each season, the Kennel Club, Gonzaga’s largest student-run club, organizes this rite of passage for students to show their dedication to the Zags. It begins with a scheduled tweet at exactly 12:15 p.m. the Wednesday before the game, revealing a secret location which students sprint to and receive a tent number, allowing them to camp overnight on Friday and sit in the first rows of the student section at the game.
2. DJ DESMET
Every year, one anonymous resident of the century-old, all-male dorm DeSmet Hall is dubbed “DJ DeSmet” and tasked with curating the perfect playlist for students walking to and from class.
3. WELCOME WALK
Hundreds of faculty and staff line up to cheer on incoming students as they walk to Academic Convocation at the start of the fall semester to ensure incoming students know they are valued and welcome.
4. “ZOMBIE NATION” CHANT
“Zombie Nation” is led by the Kennel Club to fire up the crowd at every home basketball game. There’s nothing like hearing 6,000 fans scream, “We are G-U!”
5. GONZAGA DAY
