Welcome The Taungurung people of the Kulin Nation are the traditional owners of this country, and we recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. Taungurung Country takes in the upper reaches of the Goulburn River and its tributaries north of the Dividing Range. The mighty Goulburn River, wetlands and surrounding mountains are integral topographical features intrinsic to the historical narrative of the Taungurung Clans. Traditionally, Taungurung (Daung wurrung) people lived a hunter/gatherer existence. The various clan groups migrated through their territory dependent upon the seasonal variations of weather and the availability of food. Today, the Goulburn River remains a favourite among recreational fishers with an abundance of species in the waterways. Scar trees, rock shelters, and rock art are scattered throughout the landscape. Many towns and regions have a Taungurung origin: Nagambie (nogamby) = lagoon. Taungurung people were divided into two related language groups, the Yowung-illiam dwellers on the mountains and the Yeerun-illiam dwellers of the river. The region is defined by its striking natural geographic features, of the Goulburn River, Nagambie Lakes, Strathbogie Ranges, bush trails, and ancient forests, including Tallarook State Forest, Mount Black and Reedy Lake Conservation Reserves, and the Heathcote Graytown National Park.

Car Club Enthusiasts Daily Planner For the car club enthusiast, we start the day in the historic township of Yea. Fuel up, grab a coffee and be ready to depart by 8am. Our first stop is just a short drive north along the Goulburn Valley Hwy, following the river until you reach The Trawool Estate. Travel time approx. 20 mins / 24kms. Here you will stop for morning tea overlooking the National Trust listed Trawool Valley. Departing Trawool Estate at 9:30am, continue north to Puckapunyal, stopping at the Army Tank Museum where you can admire the 80+ armoured vehicles, light horse and weaponry exhibit. The gallery is home to some of the largest works produced by Australia’s most revered Indigenous artists. Depart Mitchelton by 3:30pm and make your way to Victoria’s oldest vineyard, Tahbilk, where you can wander the historic grounds (est 1860) before exploring the famous underground cellar and cellar door experience. Hughes Creek Bridge ‘Avenel Run’ Pastoral Holding was 60,000 acres of property taken up by Henry Kent Hughes in 1838 and named after his former property ”Avenel” in England. Hughes also gave his name to the creek running through the property. The Hughes Creek Bridge was built in 1859.

Avenel Cemetery Many visitors flock to see the grave of Ned Kelly’s father, Red Kelly as they take a tour through Victoria’s Kelly country and visit the towns where our most famous bushranger spent his life. The ‘Old Black Train’ as it is known by locals was built in 1913 and has sat proudly on display on Anzac Avenue since 1965. There is a playground for the kids, shelters, BBQs, and seating.

The Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk meanders amidst native trees and grasses that resemble rubber trees and rice paddies synonymous with Vietnam. The wall includes both the names of all Australian veterans who served in the Vietnam War and a photographic timeline.

Trails & Tours Daily Planner Take in Nagambie’s majestic backwaters and billabongs with a morning walk along Tahbilk’s unique eco-trails. Meet the Artist Chris ‘ROY’ Taylor

The communities of Nagambie and Seymour have thrown open their doors to welcome visitors to the region with the help of an artist and his posters. Both townships are pooling their resources in a new tourism attraction campaign featuring the famous Goulburn River and Ranges and other natural attractions in the Mitchell and Strathbogie Shires. Keen to be involved, former Herald-Sun illustrator and cartoonist Chris ‘Roy’ Taylor created a series of vintage travel posters around the theme of Take Nature’s Road Trip. The posters showcase the region’s natural beauty and main attractions with a retro twist as part of the region’s ‘pitch’ to Victoria’s $10bn regional tourism market. Mr Taylor’s art was inspired by his childhood memories of Nagambie and the region. “Nagambie is such a wonderful place to holiday,” Mr Taylor said.

“As a child, and now as an adult, I have so many fond memories of its lakes, fishing, birdlife, trails, and open-air experiences. There’s something very classical and timeless about this area. The posters reflect this vintage feel, with a classic modern twist, which has become the essence of the region. Take Nature’s Road Trip reflects the combination of tradition and trend, a return to the forgotten experience of romantic getaways and family day trips. Think nature walks with the kids along billabongs, untouched landscapes with an abundance of wildlife, water adventures, handmade wines, and the delicacies of locally picked gourmet food.
