Love is in the air! Or shall I say it’s in the Go Local magazine, as the spring weddings section is here! I am currently in the time of my life where it seems like all my friends and family are getting engaged and married. This year, I will be attending three weddings, one for my cousin and two for my close friends, in Newport, Rhode Island; Cape Cod and Boston. One thing I love about weddings is how each one is uniquely significant to the couple tying the knot. Whether it be in an intimate setting or large gathering, in a church or on the beach, a DJ or a band — the list goes on — no two weddings are the same. This month’s Go Local highlights a few wedding offerings and additives that enhance your special day, and what is more special than a keepsake for the couple and the people they share the moment with. With Event Painting by Erin, artist Erin Boughamer offers live wedding paintings, guest portraits and live guest collaborative paintings. Stephanie Thomacos had no experience in business or in any kitchen before starting her small bakery company, Mama’s Macs & More, in April of 2019. Since then, she has been going strong with a loyal clientele of customers in the North Central Connecticut area. Mama’s Macs & More specializes in French macarons with an assortment of flavors including crème brûlée, salted caramel apple, mango Tajin, black forest cake, strawberry marshmallow, cotton candy, birthday cake, lavender lemon, pistachio, and cinnamon roll. Thomacos rents a space in Ellington, in a licensed gluten-free kitchen. She also does custom orders, wholesale, pop-ups, and farmer market events. “I’m a creative person,” said Thomacos. “I love making things with my hands and I’m constantly working on a

new project/art. It’s a part of me. It’s been comforting and satisfying to be able to commit to doing something I set my mind to.” She went on to say, “Macarons are a really excellent way to be creative because they can be made into an amazing variety of flavors. There’s really no limit there. I’ve even done pickle macs and a few years back, a black chocolate ganache. I’m always surprised with what ends up working out when I experiment.” Thomacos started Mama’s Macs & More organically. She has always been a baker and when she discovered making macarons, around 2017, people’s interest is what drew Thomacos in. “I liked the challenge and versatility of macarons, it made them so interesting,” she said. Cottage food was a new law in Connecticut in 2018, so Thomacos began there for a few years baking at home. Her children were babies when she started, and she was a stay-at-home mom. During that time, Thomacos was learning and sharing GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 9

her macarons with other people. Then in 2019, she made her business official. Thomacos gained popularity at the farmers markets and Mama’s Macs & More grew from there. Thomacos’ mother, Sandy Knoefel, is her biggest fan. Knoefel has tried many macarons from different places and was never really a fan until she had her daughters. Now, she is hooked and recommends Thomacos to all her friends. “I could not be [prouder] of her,” said Knoefel. “Stephanie is self-made, hardworking and never gives up despite all her challenges as a single mom. What she brings is a necessity of yummy treats that would otherwise be restricted to many people with allergies and her personality is contagious.” Knoefel continued, “She is one of the most pleasant, warm, loving young [lady’s] and an amazing mother and daughter … I am blessed to call her my daughter.” Thomacos’ busy season begins in May. Her main place of sale is the Ellington Farmers Market on 72 Maple St. every Saturday until the end of October. Market Master Dianne Trueb of the Ellington Farmers Market said, “Mama’s Macs & More has been a vendor since 2020. It’s unique, delicious and consistent. Stephanie Thomacos brings warmth, graciousness and a smile to every market. Her product is so well-loved that a line often forms half an hour before the market even opens.” She went on to say, “Stephanie is known for creating clever seasonal themes for her macarons, like frogs, ‘Star Wars’ characters and more. Her consistency and creativity make her a beloved part of the Ellington Farmers Market and surrounding community.” Thomacos hopes to have a good season this year, making sure she’s prepared and consistent. “I never imagined I would still be running my own business five years later,” Thomacos said. “There was no big end goal. I am very grateful to still be on this path and where it might take me. here are plenty of fitness clubs in the area. Why should someone choose Century Fitness in East Longmeadow? According to owner Todd Witwer, the choice should be an easy one. It’s the culture of Century Fitness. “We’re friendly and welcoming no matter where you are in your fitness journey,” Witwer said, adding that the number of members who have been with Century Fitness since he purchased the facility from Meadows East in 2000 is a testament to his staff’s commitment to that ideal. “My staff is amazing,” Witwer shared. “Many have been with me for more than 10 years and they are on the front lines of maintaining this friendliness. I always tell them I want to be the friendliest gym in the country, and they do a great job at it.” The busy pace in the club at 10:30 a.m. on a weekday was a testament to the appeal of this local fitness mecca. The front desk greeted members by name, often chatting with them about some snatch of life. Clients were

working out in every area of the facility — utilizing the Peloton bikes, stair steppers and weight machines in the second-floor main workout room, the kettlebells in the turf rooms, classes in the mirrored exercise area, free weights in the smaller rooms and barbells in the rack rooms. There was also a bevy of clients enjoying a post-workout break — or day — in the hot tub, pool and saunas. The hydrotherapy bed — a new recovery-focused addition at the club — was occupied, but there were other recovery-focused areas such as massage and aromatherapy rooms ready to welcome recovering exercisers. Witwer shared a quick story about a regular client who takes full advantage of the “recovery” aspect of his Century Fitness memberships. “He kids me about his day off doing the ‘tri-bathalon’ — he uses the pool, hot tub, sauna and steam room,” Witwer shared. “Sometimes he just sits in a chair and listens to the waterfall — by the pool — as part of his recovery day.” Whatever the client is looking to achieve in his or GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 15

her fitness experience, Witwer said the instructors and personal trainers at his two-story club are ready to help them work towards it. Witwer said he was fresh out of grad school in Arizona, a master’s degree in physical therapy in hand when he decided to make a bid to purchase what was then the Meadows East Health Club. “I came back to East Longmeadow, I loved sports, and I always wanted to own my own business,” Witwer explained. “I got in touch with the owner, created a business plan, got in touch with some banks and got denied multiple times.” The then 27-year-old — who also had an undergraduate degree in business administration — was just about ready to give up on his dream when the local branch of Westfield Bank called, accepting his plan. “I was petrified. I didn’t take a day off for four years. The loan made me highly motivated,” Witwer admitted, adding he concentrated on “remodeling and getting the club up to a top-notch facility” during the first few years. Over the next two decades, Witwer further expanded the club’s footprint, renovating spaces that were formerly occupied by other building tenants to create a twofloor full-service club. Today Century Fitness is a “full multi-purpose health club that offers rows of strength and free weights, cardio, 16 GO LOCAL MAY 2025

group exercise classes like yoga, multiple turf areas, a 30-minute total body circuit, Peloton [bikes], a sauna, pool, hot tub, aromatherapy room, steam room, tanning, massage, red light therapy and personal training,” Witwer said. Witwer shared that the state-of-the-art club — which will be adding some new offerings based on what he learned at the recent National [fitness] Club Convention in Las Vegas — has been constantly evolving to meet the needs — and match the trends — that clients want over the past 25 years. For example, shortly after he bought the club in 2000, the trend shifted away from the strength and cardio work of the 1990s to a focus on functional training. “It was much like the physical therapy work I knew, using physio balls, foam rollers, therapy bands — and I had been trained on that,” Witwer said. He added he had originally planned to incorporate a physical therapy business into the health club, but soon found his time was taken up with the day-to-day operations. “I only used [my training] to help out members, which I still do,” Witwer shared. But, Witwer said, he also learned quickly that the fitness industry can be fickle. It’s “well-known for its trends … you have to be careful not to jump on a trend that’s gone in 18 months,” he joked, noting that in 2000 there

was the craze for “Billy Blank and Tae-Bo.” The trend in the past few years has moved back to strength training, he noted, and he’s reworked spaces in the club to accommodate the trend. He’s created four different areas where members can utilize dumbbells and transformed an area downstairs into a private rack room. For example, he said those who like a kettlebell workout “can do kettlebells in the turf area, in the open classroom or in the H.I.T. area, it depends on where they want to do their squats.” “Most clubs just have one room and one area for kettlebells,” Witwer continued. “The way we have set up the club with two floors and multiple rooms there are different atmospheres [for working out]. Members tell us they love that aspect.” Another recent shift in the fitness industry is toward recovery and an overall holistic approach to fitness. “Techniques like foam rolling, massage therapy, hot tubs, saunas, theraguns and active recovery workouts have become as important as the workout itself,” Witwer said. He added, “We have a red light therapy bed with a focus on recovery and rejuvenation, a hydro-therapy bed with a focus on recovery” in addition to their spa amenities. Overall, Witwer said he sees a focus on longevity at the core of today’s fitness trends.

Witwer acknowledged that devices such as smart watches, Oura rings and fitness trackers have changed the way clients approach and track their workouts, a trend he expects to see grow as more and more people adopt these devices. These devices, he said, “have revolutionized fitness tracking, allowing individuals to monitor the heart rate, steps, calories burned” and other fitness measurements. To facilitate this trend, Witwer said the club has incorporated Peloton bikes into the cardio offerings Century Fitness provides to members, with access to the digital workouts included in their membership. Overall, Witwer said he strives to offer his members a full-service club with the latest amenities at an affordable monthly membership price, providing “luxury for less.” CENTURY FITNESS IS LOCATED AT 491 NORTH MAIN ST. ver hear the popular song “Little Red Rooster” recorded back in 1961 by American blues musician Howlin’ Wolf? It’s not quite the same, but today folks are “singing” the praises of Red Brewster Brewery open four days a week in Enfield. Get the similarity of combining “brew” with “ster” from rooster and coming up with a clever title for their brewery? “We still have a red rooster who roams our property,” said Charlie Mastroberti, owner of Red Brewster Brewery along with his wife, Ellen, and daughter Christie Stewart, about the catchy name which was born after a brainstorming session together. Mastroberti, who owns Quest Pest Control was looking for a new venture, one that would not only bring in extra money to the household, but one that would also provide a job for his special needs daughter Leah, who he said has been “quite a lot of help at the brewery.” “My daughter Christie and her husband had visited several breweries in the past which they enjoyed. They found them to have a different feel from a regular bar, more of a community atmosphere. They took my wife and me around to a few of their favorite breweries and we felt the same way,” Mastroberti shared about their decision to go the brewer route for their new venture.

What followed was a three-and-a-half-year journey — dealing with the coronavirus pandemic at the time didn’t help, Mastroberti noted — before opening day on Sept. 21, 2023. “We had to go before the town’s zoning board for a special use liquor permit, as well as apply for various federal and state permits … a lot of paperwork which took a lot of time,” he said. Then came the hard work with Mastroberti starting from scratch to create the family brewery. “We needed a structure to house our brewery and purchased a prefabricated barn from a company in Pennsylvania, requiring us to apply for yet another permit to build it on our property. Of course, the barn was just a shell and had to be outfitted with electricity, plumbing, heat, air conditioning, lighting, tables and chairs, a nice bar where our customers could sit and enjoy a cool one, and other pleasing décor, including beautiful paintings by my artist wife, Ellen, some of which are for sale,” he said. Then, there was still the “not so little” subject of brewing and purchasing equipment — they have a one-barrel system. While many brewers begin brewing as a hobby in their homes or outside in their garages, eventually leading up to opening their own microbrewery, Mastroberti knew nothing about the brewing process, other than enjoying GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 21

the final product. “We have been fortunate enough to have guidance from a few brewers willing to share their knowledge with us,” said Mastroberti, who brews alongside his daughter, Christie. Today, they brew using a one-barrel system, but because of its smaller size, it requires them to often work around the clock to be able to pour enough for their thirsty customers. “We do have four fermenters, so we have four brews going at once. Still, we are considering purchasing a larger system in the near future to help make it easier on ourselves,” Mastroberti shared. The Red Brewster’s current tap menu includes Cowboy Coffee Stout, Sunshine Pilsner, The Fizzy Farmhouse Seltzer, Final Frost Winter Ale, Norwegian IPA, Daisy American Pale Wheat Beer, Wicked Amber Red Lager, Barnyard Porter with Blueberry, and a Cowgirl Coffee Stout. “We are constantly working on new beers so that we have a mixture of customer favorites on tap alongside something new to try. We will be bringing back our Mexican Lager for Cinco de Mayo, as well as introducing a new IPA and a German Kolsch,” Mastroberti said. In addition to serving up their craft brews, last January the brewery was granted permission from the Planning and Zoning Commission to “manufacture, store, and sell wine and hard cider for consumption on the premises” only by Connecticut producers. They have two different permits; one is a beer manufacturer permit and the other is a Connecticut Craft Café License, which allows the retail sale of alcoholic liquor manufactured in Connecticut. There are wines — Zinful Red (Zinfandel), Worthington White (Cayuga White) and Vineyard Poetry (Vidal Blanc) 22 GO LOCAL MAY 2025

— from Worthington Winery and hard cider from Stafford Cidery to choose from, as well as liquors from Litchfield Distillery including their Espresso Martini. For teetotalers there is water, cold brew coffee and Coke. While there is no kitchen in their tap room, those imbibing don’t have to go hungry. “We sell potato chips and will shortly have charcuterie boards available to purchase as we did last year. And we will have food trucks coming back on the weekends including Connecticut favorite Hog Tied BBQ, who were at the brewery as part of our St. Patrick’s Day celebration. We have also had Cousins Maine Lobster serving up fresh seafood, Dishmade Food Truck from Windsor, and Four A’s Food Truck out of Enfield,” Mastroberti said. “And we also allow anyone to bring their own food. So, you can pack a picnic basket or order food to be delivered while you are here,” he added, noting there are many nearby restaurants where people can go to pick up or have their food delivered. Adding to the relaxed atmosphere at Red Brewster Brewery, one side of the red barn is outfitted with a garage-like door that opens leading to a canopy tent with additional tables and chairs. Beyond that awaits a beer garden with fire pits to cozy up to if there is a chill in the air. “We also have a little functioning farm that we started to get Leah interested in farming. Our llama, we call him Zazu, a name taken from 'The Lion King,’ who is a big hit with visitors, especially with the kids. And there are also chickens, ducks and goats among the menagerie,” Mastroberti shared. And come the warmer months, there will be plenty to do in addition to resting a spell and enjoying a good brew and good company. In addition to the food trucks, most weekends they aim

to have acoustic music — nothing electric so as not to disturb their neighbors, Mastroberti noted. “In the past we have had a St. Patrick’s Day celebration, Trunk or Treat for Halloween, and Santa and Mrs. Claus who visit at Christmastime, all of which we plan to continue. We’ve also had a cornhole competition, which is now back on Wednesday nights through October, Paint and Sip Night, and a Card Night on Wednesdays in the winter for anyone who wants to come in and play,” he said. An additional goal when considering opening the brewery was to help support Vinfen Corporation in Windsor, where Leah participates in a program at the nonprofit health and human services organization, providing community-based services for individuals with special needs. “Her program has their clients make items, such as candles, to be sold at our brewery with all of the proceeds going directly back to the program. And, put these dates on your calendar. From [Sept.] 19-21, we will be hosting our first art event with Vinfen Corp., when their artists will display their different types of artworks throughout the brewery. These pieces will be for sale, and again the proceeds benefit the program with the artists also earning a percentage,” Mastroberti said. To imbibe a cooling pint of one of Red Brewster Brewery’s pleasing concoctions will cost customers $8, who can also enjoy a flight of four for the same price. While some craft breweries could bear the brunt of President Donald Trump’s recent tariffs on aluminum and steel, Mastroberti for now said he isn’t expecting it to affect his prices since he doesn’t can his products for distribution. The brewer is pleased with the response the brewery has received from the public. “A lot of the locals, I would say within a five-mile radius of the brewery, would have never met one another and become friends if it wasn’t for coming to Red Brewster Brewery. We have achieved a real community feel like those other breweries we visited before opening our own. And our customers are constantly telling us it feels like home when they are here and that they love the community and family atmosphere,” Mastroberti said about children being able to feel welcomed, too. And there is another community that welcomed Red Brewster Brewery. “I have gone to almost every local brewer in the area, and they have welcomed me with open arms, when as a new brewer, I have questions for them,” he noted. Tortellini Pasta Salad with Turkey Tips & Vegetables 1 pound Turkey breast 2 packages of frozen cheese tortellini 1 package cherry tomatoes 1 bunch of asparagus 1 jar of pesto 1-2 tbsp olive oil Salt and pepper to taste

Marinate your turkey breast however you’d like and let sit overnight, depending on the size of your turkey you may have to butterfly or filet it. Boil your cheese tortellini until cooked to your liking and let cool. On a medium high grill add your marinated turkey breast once preheated. Toss your tomatoes and asparagus in olive oil, salt and pepper and add to a grill pan and place on the grill. Once your vegetables are a little charred you can remove them and let sit. Your turkey should be around 165F internally when you take it off and let it rest for a few moments before slicing. To a mixing bowl, add your tortellini, vegetables, sliced turkey breast, and jar of pesto and mix. Serve at room temperature and enjoy!

Memories on Elm BANQUETS & MORE

It’s the perfect space for an intimate wedding reception, a bridal shower, or even a rehearsal dinner. Memories on Elm Banquets & More opened at 89 Elm St. in Westfield in January, offering couples and their families another option for hosting their most important events. Owner Shannon Sutherland said she was looking for just the right place to launch her dream of providing intimate accommodations for life’s most memorable occasions. When she saw the second-floor space in Westfield’s historic Lambson Building, she knew she’d found the perfect home for her business. Nestled atop the Tribeca Gastro Bar & Grill in Westfield’s Historic District, the banquet space, which can accommodate up to 100 guests, exudes an industrial modern vibe. The floors are rich, historic hardwood, the tongue-and-groove paneled walls are painted a soft shade of cream, and the space is illuminated by a mix of turn-of-the 19th century-style industrial fixtures. Sutherland said she ensures that the room’s centrally located wood-paneled bar is fully stocked with whatever beverage choices her guests need for their occasion. But the standout feature of the room is the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the gas lighting fixtures on the historic street below. These windows also offer event guests a stunning view of the mountains beyond. “I love it,” Sutherland said of the beautiful viewing area, “People

tend to migrate here.” She installed a footrest under the wooden sill that dissects the glass during renovations, noting that people now “like to come [to the window], put their foot down, put their drink down and converse” while enjoying the view, which is particularly spectacular at sunset. Located at the corner of Elm and Thomas streets on land originally purchased from one of Westfield’s early landholders and benefactors, Ruben Noble, construction on what is now known as the Lambson Furniture Building began in 1860. Lambson Furniture, which offered its custom desks, parlor sets, baby carriages and bedding in a massive showroom on the first floor, manufactured its products in its workshops on the upper three floors, including the second-floor area where Sutherland’s new Memories on Elm banquet facility is now located. The ornate staircase leading from the first to second floors by the rear entrance is original to the building’s design. Lambson Furniture opened to the public in 1869. Beyond its namesake products, the building is famous for installing the first hydraulic elevator in Western Massachusetts, manufactured at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, in 1896. The building still uses the original elevator location, though the equipment has been upgraded to meet modern safety standards. This feature makes Memories on Elm fully handicapped accessible. Lambson Furniture closed in 2002, and in 2004, Bently’s Billiards took over the first and second floors of the building, operating in the space until 2007. The building was unoccupied until Gene Borowski purchased it in 2022, undertaking renovations that included insulation sealing of the floor-to-ceiling windows on the second floor, all while retaining the original glass and ornate GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 33

trim. The popular Tribecca Gastro Bar & Grill opened on the first floor of the building in February of 2023. Memories on Elm has a street-facing entrance adjacent to the Tribecca door, as well as a rear entrance off the parking lot behind the building. Sutherland said she chose simple but elegant rich wood-toned tables and chairs for Memories on Elm to give her clients the freedom to arrange the space in any configuration they choose. Except for the two permanent booths on the left wall and the bar located against the right wall, all the furnishings can be moved to accommodate a client’s seating plan for their wedding reception or other special event. And with its neutrally warm color scheme, she added that Memories on Elm offers clients a blank slate when it comes to “dressing” the space to fit their vision for their wedding — or another occasion. “They can bring their own decorations, plants, I’m very flexible,” Sutherland said. For entertainment, Sutherland has installed a space-wide sound system that can connect to any device — an iPhone, tablet or laptop — by Bluetooth. She added clients can also choose to bring in their own DJ to provide the music and emcee duties for their wedding. And Sutherland includes a special feature for clients who choose to host their event with Memories on Elm, something that is usually an add-on rental with other venues. “A 360-degree camera is included in the price,” she shared, explaining that this camera, “takes a video and [that’s] sent right away to your phone,” and can be shared with multiple phones. When it comes to planning the food for a client’s event, Sutherland shared that she has a caterer that she uses regularly. 34 GO LOCAL MAY 2025

Clients are also welcome to contract for their own caterer, or they can “bring in their own food,” she said. “I’m very big on options,” Sutherland shared. “If people have a family recipe that they like to include on a special occasion, I like to give them that opportunity.” Her flexibility, she said, comes from being keenly aware of all the moving parts that go into planning any special occasion. “I think planning a wedding, or planning a party is very stressful,” she said. “So, I try to make [the experience] as smooth as possible.” Beyond the other planning steps that encompass putting together a memorable event, Sutherland said she’s also willing to be accommodating on time if the occasion arises. “If the client has rented the space until 10 p.m., but at the end of their event sees the need to add an hour, to 11 p.m., I’m flexible” and “will extend the time with no extra charge,” she said. With a background in hospitality that included bartending and bar management, Sutherland said making the move to open her own banquet venue was the fulfillment of a long-held dream. Erin Leigh Boughamer brings a unique, personal addition to any event, especially weddings. Boughamer is the owner and artist behind Event Paintings by Erin. For over two decades, she has been a full-time artist, starting out selling her original work at fairs across New England. The Southington, Connecticut native, who has a bachelor of fine arts from the University of Connecticut, began offering private lessons to children and later opened Paint Sip Fun in Springfield in 2013. It was a bachelorette paint party that sparked her to begin painting live at events. “In 2021, while hosting a paint and sip for a bachelorette party, I was approached by the bride-to-be who asked if I could paint live at her wedding,” said Boughamer. 38 GO LOCAL MAY 2025

“At that time, I had never heard of the concept. Now, only three and a half short years later, I have a full-time event painting business — along with Paint Sip Fun — that employs two other artists and an assistant to help keep up with the demand.” Boughamer said the process for a live wedding painting begins with a personal in-depth conversation with the couple about what type of art they want, and why. For weddings, she offers three types of paintings: Live Wedding Paintings, Guest Portraits and Live Guest Collaborative Paintings. “For Live Wedding Paintings, where I paint the couple on a larger sized canvas, I ask them where it will be hung in their house, which helps them determine what size canvas to choose,” said Boughamer. “I also ask them if they have a specific moment they would like me to paint, is there anything special about their attire, decorations, or anything else that might

be important that they want to see in their painting. I want to ensure I include everything they want, even things they may not have thought of yet.” Boughamer said couples say they work with her because they love her realistic art style. “I spend 20-40 hours on one canvas making sure every detail is perfect,” she said. “Typically, I will start with a blank white canvas at cocktail hour to which I will draw, then paint the background and work through the reception adding layers of paint, being sure to add the first layers of the couple before the night is done, so everyone has an idea of what to expect. Guests love to look on and talk with me about the process. The comment I hear most often is, ‘I can’t wait to see it done!’ As I know it will be merely impossible to invite all wedding guests to the bride and groom’s home, all my packages include blank notecards with the painting printed on the front, so every guest at the wedding

can see the finished painting.” Live Guest Portraits are small quick pen and ink watercolor portraits on paper, often used as guest favors. Boughamer and the couple discuss how they want the portraits to look, such as a full-body drawing or just head and shoulders. She even asks if the couple wants the guests' faces painted. “I know that sounds funny, but because of social media, faceless is all the rage. Even with these small watercolor portraits, I am able to capture lots of details,” Boughamer said. “It’s this kind of detail that couples are drawn to and hire me for. I will typically sketch, ink and paint one person in 10-15 minutes, and get through as many guests as I can while I am there. The rest is brought back to the studio to finish. Guests love this idea, love to watch me paint and are always excited to see their finished painting.” The Live Guest Collaborative Paintings

“Together the couple and I design a painting that has a very special meaning to them, like where they got engaged, their favorite hobby together, or even their family pet,” she said. “I take this image and draw it onto a large canvas for everyone at the wedding to then paint a piece of with acrylic paint. I give each guest a mini art lesson, and the correct colors for their spot on the canvas to create the right texture for what they are painting. For example, if the spot they chose is part of the water, I will give them the palette with blue paints and instruct them to move their brush ‘left and right like a minus sign.’ This ensures the water will look like water. I will photograph them while in action leaving their mark on the canvas, then ask them to write a congratulatory note to the happy couple. These are both then put into a small book.

Boughamer jokes that she was born with a paintbrush in her hands. Her mother is creative and her aunt and grandmother were professional artists, so it was no surprise that Boughamer showed artistic talent from a very young age. “I have always loved art, and with these kinds of strong influences around me, I was also encouraged to create always,” she said. “When entering college, while I loved art, I didn’t think my parents would agree to an art degree. So, for the first year, I studied psychology, but also took a fun elective drawing class to lighten my load. When my grades came in, my dad sat me down and sternly told me he would not pay for my psychology degree if I was barely passing my classes. He then asked, ‘You got an A in your art class, why don’t you study art?’ It was only then that I gave GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 39

myself permission to follow my passions in art. I changed my major, and I haven’t looked back since!”

Boughamer could write a book on the role art has in her life. She said through all the good times and the bad, art has always been her safe place, her happy place and her therapist.

Based in Springfield, Boughamer has her Paint Sip Fun business, offers pet portraits and art for the home and exhibits her work. “I have painted landscapes, lighthouses, fruit still lifes, vibrantly colored endangered animals, whimsical horses and black and white organic and geometric abstracts,” Boughamer said. “Being an empty nester has now afforded me the time to pursue my passion of painting and begin my search for gallery representation. My latest body of work titled ‘Calming Chaos,’ shown recently with rave reviews at the Jorgensen Gallery/ The University of Connecticut. This collection celebrates the tranquility and peace that can exist even amidst life’s mayhem and discord. A poignant theme in today’s polarized and chaotic world.”

“If I don’t do something creative every day I can feel it. Even my family will notice my down mood, and will tell me to go to the studio as they too know when I emerge I will feel happier,” Boughamer said. She noted that live wedding painting has become more and more popular in addition to traditional wedding photography. “Couples are interested in not only owning an heirloom keepsake, but also to have a new intriguing form of entertainment for their guests,” she said. “Even on the off chance you have seen a live painter before, the intrigue never gets old watching someone create something in front of your very own eyes. Especially a painting of people you love in a setting you were part of. While the photographer captures the entire day, I focus on just one moment. That moment is carefully curated with the couple ahead of time during one of our phone, in-person or Zoom consultations.” In addition to her Live Wedding Paintings, Boughamer also paints wedding dress and bouquet portraits and recently 40 GO LOCAL MAY 2025

Boughamer said her art, whether on a gown, canvas or paper, is her passion. “Whether I am creating a commissioned realistic portrait or an abstract painting from my soul, I feel most at home and at peace with a paintbrush in my hand. I am blessed to be able to share my gift with others, especially on one of the biggest days of their lives, it is simply magical, every time,” she said. What started as a dream has blossomed into a joyful reality on wheels. Michele Martinelli, owner of The Little Flower Truck at Willow Barn Designs based in East Longmeadow, has taken her love of flowers and turned it into a vibrant mobile experience that brings beauty, connection and community together in a truly unique way. “I’ve always dreamed of bringing flowers to people,” Martinelli shared. That dream took shape after she read an article about a flower truck. Inspired, she envisioned a way to work with flowers and connect more deeply with the community.

“You get to meet so many people at so many places,” she said, her enthusiasm unmistakable. Since launching, The Little Flower Truck has become a standout presence at weddings, bridal showers, as well as corporate events and private gatherings across the region. Guests are invited to create their own personalized bouquets, choosing from an ever-changing array of seasonal blooms. Each experience includes a mix of filler flowers, greenery and a few focal flowers to build a balanced, beautiful arrangement. For those interested in going a step

further, Martinelli also offers a short flower arranging class, where participants learn not only design basics, but also tricks like how to tie bows and wrap arrangements. Every bouquet from The Little Flower Truck is thoughtfully packaged. “Each favor gets a printed tag, usually a personalized thank you, and is wrapped,” Martinelli explained. “And we make sure it’s wrapped well enough for anyone traveling long distances.” Martinelli is deeply committed to supporting local farms and businesses. cooperative of regional flower growers. “That guarantees fresh flowers and supports other small businesses,” she noted. For more variety, she also sources wholesale blooms from Miami, New York, and even Holland. A creative touch is always part of the mix. The truck often features themed events — from bright citrus tones to soft sherbet palettes — aligning with seasonal colors or the mood of the occasion. These themes not only enhance the visual experience but help make each event feel extra special. The Little Flower Truck is not just a novelty; it’s a heartfelt endeavor that resonates with people. Bookings are already rolling in for 2026, and Martinelli has big dreams for the future. “This is my love and my joy,” she said. “I’d love to expand and do a second truck someday. And I’d love to attend more popup events with the truck, too.” Despite the growing demand, Martinelli is steadfast in her mission to keep the experience accessible. “My goal is always to make it affordable, so we mix higherend and more basic flowers together,” she said.
