GMA was well represented at the CMAA world conference in Anaheim with a record 22 attendees.

It was wonderful to see that twelve of the 115 new Certified Club Managers, recognised by the thousands in attendance, were from Australia. Please enjoy the articles from some of our attendees in this edition of the journal.

It was only a day or so after returning that the US and Israel struck Iran, triggering a chain of global events that have created great political uncertainty and high fuel costs. So, all the worldwide delegates were lucky with the timing, or CMAA calls the shots over Washington.

GMA’s Annual General Meeting will be held online on Tuesday, 19th May. In addition to recapping 2025 where member numbers and member services continue to expand, it’s a chance to thank Mark Tan from GMA’s SA/NT chapter, and Mat Loughnane from GMA’s VIC/TAS chapter, for their years of considerable service to the association. Mark was first appointed in 2019, and Matt in 2021. We’ll be acknowledging both contributions at our board meeting in April. State chapter committees elect their directors to the board in two-year terms, and we’re delighted that SA/NT has elected Robert Vincekovic and VIC/TAS has elected Christian Tanner. Welcome gents.

We’re excited that the GMA/ASTMA Conference & Trade Exhibition is on from Sunday, 21st June to Thursday, 25th June 2026, proudly supported by Schweppes. And we have it on good authority that Melbourne is a long way from the rest of the world and

a safe place to travel. Early-bird bookings for GMA delegates remain available until the end of April, but don’t delay your registration, flight and accommodation requirements.

Paul, Courtney, Leigh and our team have put together an outstanding line-up of speakers and exhibitors – bigger and better than ever. See more in this journal. In addition, we can expect lots of learning from the conversations in the gaps as well as at the social events and golf. Our gala dinner will be a highlight and a chance to recognise one member through a distinguished service award as well as a number of GMA members of significant milestone tenure.

One such member will be Sharon Purnell, GM of Mt Coolum GC, who has served for over 40 years in golf management and administration. Some of that has been with close colleague and long-term GMA member Tim Gahan, these days GM at Headland GC. Enjoy the article on Sharon’s journey in this edition of the journal.

An important notice too; we need your support in completing the biennial 2026 GMA National Golf Club Salary Census conducted by GBAS. The survey provides important information for employment in many golf club roles and will take 10 minutes to complete. Please complete the survey by Sunday, 3rd May.

Finally, I’d like to thank our major partner, Schweppes, and all of our wonderful corporate partners, who we look forward to seeing at the conference, along with exhibitors, in June. Don’t miss it. We look forward to seeing you then.

From the CEO

What’s the difference between February and March? February is normal, and March is when all hell breaks loose.

Well, that’s the way it was in 2020 with the pandemic, and again in 2026 with the events in the Middle East. Everything impacts everything else.

Meanwhile, in our small corner of the globe, all roads lead to the GMA/ASTMA Conference & Trade Exhibition, to be held in Melbourne from 21st to 25th June 2026 – proudly supported by our major partner, Schweppes. It really is the biggest event ever, so please join us.

Members will be spoilt for choice with a big plenary on Tuesday, followed by two further days where break-out sessions are the order of the day. The social events and golf at The National will be something to remember.

With Australia having 22 Certified Club Managers and a lot of eager BMI folks coming through the system, we’ve been turning our attention to the next phase

in designation, being the Certified Club Executive (CCE). The CCE program has been reviewed extensively, and at the recent CMAA world conference, CEO Jeff Morgan outlined the changes that will take place from 2030, which will include an exam and additional BMI courses: BMI Financial Literacy, BMI Executive Leadership and the need to attend a Capital Improvement Summit.

In the meantime, the existing requirement for working towards a CCE includes completing a BMI Strategic Leadership and BMI Tactical Leadership course. These two BMI’s remain beyond 2030 yet have never been held outside of the US, and we’re keen to change that. Our aim is for one or both to be available next year in Australia. We’ll coordinate with CMAA-NZ as members in NZ are also keen to take the next step.

Other news from CMAA is that the Contemporary Club Management book is being updated and is 85% there. Rather than a 727-page bible, it will be all electronic in the future, making it easy to update.

We’ll see you in June.

2026 GMA National Golf Club Salary Census

GMA's National Golf Club Salary Census is conducted every two years.

Compiled by Golf Business Advisory Services (GBAS), the survey asks 17 questions, takes less than 10 minutes to complete, and will provide general managers with up-to-date remuneration levels for various roles within the industry and for clubs of varying sizes.

An email was sent to all GMA members on Wednesday, 1st April with a link to the survey. The survey closes on Sunday, 3rd May 2026.

Are you considering BMI? You should read this!

Dear Future BMI Attendee,

You’re probably wondering if the week will be worth it?

By Wednesday your brain will be full, your phone will be full of new contacts, and you’ll have a page of things you want to change when you get back to your club. You’ll be a little tired, slightly overwhelmed but very glad you came.

BMI is a big week. Five full days of learning, discussion and ideas, and while every BMI is a little different they all have one thing in common. You will learn a lot and not always in the areas you expect.

This year we had a case study which doesn’t happen at every BMI, but when it does it becomes one of the most talked about parts of the week. It challenges the way you think, how you work in a group, and how you make decisions when there isn’t a clear right answer, which as most managers know is pretty much every day in club land.

Yes, there is an exam which isn’t nearly as scary as people think. By the time you get to the exam you realise the week isn’t about trying to trick you, it’s about making you better at what you do every day. Communicating, decision making, governance, negotiating, legal issues, finances and how to lead people.

Some people come to BMI because they want to work towards their CCM and they should. The path to CCM is worth it. When the week feels long, just keep your eyes on the prize.

But here’s the thing no one tells you before you arrive. The biggest thing you take away from BMI isn’t just the education, it’s the people.

It’s the conversations at lunch where you realise other clubs are dealing with the exact same issues. It’s the group work where you learn as much from each other as you do from the facilitator. It’s the friendships you make during the week that turn into people you call six months later when you need advice.

And then there are the moments you don’t expect to matter but they do. The Monday night trip to Holey Moley where very serious golf managers suddenly become very competitive mini golfers. And yes, there is a trophy — the Holey Moley trophy. The one everyone pretends they don’t care about until they do. Because getting your name on that trophy means something. Your name goes down in BMI history and you earn some very important bragging rights. So future BMI attendee, if you’re wondering whether the week will be worth it, it will be.

Come prepared to learn. Come prepared to contribute. Come prepared to be a little bit outside your comfort zone. And most importantly, come prepared to meet a group of people who understand your job in a way that not many others do.

See you at the next BMI!

Sincerely yours,

Michael Corcoran, Aidil Manjit, Matt Royal, Randall Mitchell, Ingrid Morrison, Tristan Zito, James Woite, Rob Blain,

The power of mattering: A leadership perspective from CMAA 2026

At the 2026 CMAA World Conference in Anaheim, I attended a session that has stayed with me well beyond the event. Dr Zach Mercurio’s presentation on “The Power of Mattering ” provided a simple but highly practical framework for leadership, one that feels particularly relevant to our club environment.

At its core, mattering is about whether people feel significant and know that what they do makes a difference. As Dr Mercurio put it, “people must first feel like they matter before they can truly contribute at their best”.

This concept is built on two key elements. The first is feeling valued, having a sense of worth and capability. The second is adding value, which is understanding that your contribution has a meaningful impact. When both are present, the outcomes are noticeable: stronger motivation, greater resilience, improved wellbeing and better performance.

When mattering is absent, however, the effects are equally visible. People tend to withdraw, becoming quieter, less engaged, and more detached. Alternatively, they move in the opposite direction, expressing frustration through complaints, blame or disruptive behaviour. Dr Mercurio referred to this as a growing ‘mattering deficit’, something many of us would recognise in varying degrees across workplaces.

One example that resonated strongly was a university cleaner who reframed her role. Rather than seeing herself as simply cleaning buildings, she saw her purpose as helping ensure that students stayed healthy. The work itself did not change, but the meaning behind it did, and with that came a significant shift in engagement and pride.

Dr Mercurio outlined three ingredients required to build a culture where people genuinely feel they matter:

1. Firstly, people need to feel noticed that they are seen and heard.

2. Secondly, they need to feel affirmed understanding how their unique strengths make a difference.

3. Finally, they need to feel needed, i.e. that their contribution is relied upon and important.

Importantly, creating this kind of environment is not abstract or complicated. It comes down to consistent leadership behaviours.

Being intentional about noticing is a strong starting point. Taking the time to observe what people are doing well, noting it, and sharing it back in a genuine way can have a significant impact. Some leaders even keep a small notebook to capture these moments so they are not missed.

Equally, the questions we ask matter. Moving beyond a routine ‘How are you?’ to more thoughtful questions, for example, to do with what has been meaningful in their day, what they are finding challenging, or

how we can support them better. This helps people feel heard and understood.

Affirmation is most effective when it is specific. Naming a person’s unique strength, explaining how it made a difference, and linking it to a real example brings credibility and meaning to the feedback.

Finally, when assigning tasks, there is value in connecting the work to a broader purpose. Helping people understand how their role benefits others, why the task matters, and how their individual strengths contribute to the outcome, can significantly increase engagement.

For those of us in the golf club environment, these ideas are highly valuable. Our teams are diverse, work across different functions, but all contribute to a shared member experience. Small, consistent actions from leaders can shape how people feel about their work and their place within the club.

A simple question to reflect on from the session was this: Who in your team needs to more clearly see how they add value, and what can you do to help them recognise it?

It is a question worth carrying forward.

Planting seeds for success

Attending the CMAA world conference in Anaheim for the first time was an eye-opening experience.

Having been part of GMA for nearly 30 years and attended numerous GMA conferences, the scale, energy and breadth of the CMAA event was unlike anything I had previously encountered.

With thousands of delegates and multiple concurrent sessions running at any one time, the conference offered an enormous depth of learning and choice. It also reinforced just how globally aligned our industry has become, particularly in the key areas of capital investment, membership demand and club culture.

A GLOBAL INDUSTRY FACING SIMILAR CHALLENGES

A clear and consistent theme throughout the conference was the scale of capital renewal projects currently underway across clubs in the US. This closely mirrors the conversations we have been having in Australia, particularly following the GMA summit in Sydney last year.

Like Australia, the US is experiencing a continued resurgence in golf and broader club membership post-COVID. Members

are placing increasing value on lifestyle, connection and balance—creating strong demand for club experiences.

Encouragingly, this demand is coinciding with the need for many clubs to undertake generational projects such as irrigation upgrades, greens replacements and clubhouse refurbishments. While this presents opportunity, it also highlights the importance of disciplined long-term planning.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CAPITAL PLANNING

One of the strongest takeaways from the conference was the need for clubs to elevate their approach to capital planning.

Understanding true long-term capital requirements remains a challenge for many clubs. Balancing member expectations, subscription levels and future asset replacement is no easy task. However, the message was clear—structured planning is essential.

The concept of undertaking a comprehensive Reserve Study stood out as a critical tool. These studies provide clarity around future capital requirements, incorporate realistic replacement costs and escalation, and, importantly, help bring members on the journey.

For many clubs, this level of transparency can reduce the risk of financial shocks and build confidence in long-term decisionmaking.

DELIVERING PROJECTS WITH CONFIDENCE

Closely linked to planning is the successful delivery of major projects.

The conference highlighted the importance of:

» Clear planning processes;

» Defined funding strategies;

» Maintaining financial stability during works; and

» Proactive and consistent member communication.

At Headland GC, we are currently in the planning phase of a full irrigation replacement—one of the most significant projects in the club’s history. The insights shared by industry leaders at CMAA have provided valuable guidance and reinforced confidence in how we approach both the project itself and our communication with members.

MANAGING MEMBERSHIP DEMAND AND WAITLISTS

With many clubs experiencing strong membership demand, managing waitlists effectively is becoming increasingly important.

It was interesting to hear the varying approaches taken by US clubs, particularly around how much access prospective members are given. The key takeaway was the importance of protecting the value of the existing membership while still engaging future members.

At Headland, we have focused on maintaining regular communication with waitlist candidates, providing transparency around timing, and creating opportunities for engagement. Our twice-yearly waitlist golf days have proven valuable in

employees’ children through university. While this may not be directly transferable to all Australian clubs, it highlights an important principle: valuing and investing in staff is essential.

With increasing cost-of-living pressures and workforce challenges, fostering a strong, supportive culture is more important than ever in attracting and retaining quality team members.

GMA: A WORLD-CLASS OFFERING

While the CMAA conference is impressive

» Successful project delivery relies on planning, funding clarity and communication;

» Membership demand must be carefully managed to protect value;

» Strong culture and staff investment are central to long-term success; and

» GMA continues to deliver a conference experience of global standard.

FINAL REFLECTION

The CMAA world conference reinforced that the future success of our clubs will be shaped by the decisions we make today—particularly in planning, culture and leadership.

confident that we are not only keeping pace

leading them. I encourage you to attend this year’s conference in Melbourne as no doubt it will again provide exceptional experience

For me, the experience has provided both practical insights and renewed confidence as we move forward with key projects at Headland. More broadly, it highlighted the strength of our industry and the value of continuing to learn, share and grow together.

I would like to thank GMA and Headland GC for affording me this incredible opportunity. We are very lucky to work in an industry that provides such collegiate and educational opportunities.

Bailey goes back-toback in NSW Salver

DAVID BRAND • OPERATIONS MANAGER (SA/NT)

The picturesque south coast provided the perfect setting for the SA/NT chapter’s first event of 2026, with South Lakes GC hosting the NSW Salver golf day and networking brunch.

Fresh from a multi-million dollar redevelopment program, including the addition of three new golf holes, upgrades to practice facilities and the introduction of regional South Australia’s first SHANX mini-golf facility, South Lakes proved an ideal venue for the occasion. Club GM, Chris Bailey, welcomed members for a day that combined networking, industry discussion and friendly competition.

A strong contingent of 18 SA/NT chapter members attended, representing a broad cross-section of Life, Full and Provisional membership categories. Arriving at South Lakes, approximately an hour south of Adelaide, members gathered from 10.00am for a networking brunch, providing an excellent opportunity for Chris to share insights into the club’s recent redevelopment works, while fellow attendees also discussed projects and developments underway at their own clubs and facilities.

Following brunch, members had the opportunity to experience the new SHANX mini-golf course, with plenty of enthusiasm

on display and more than a few competitive instincts emerging along the way. The activity added a relaxed and enjoyable element to the day, with all in attendance making the most of the chance to connect in an informal setting.

After a light lunch, attention turned to the main event, with members taking to the course to contest the NSW Salver, the SA/NT chapter’s annual championship event. With the course presented in excellent condition and the weather relatively kind by South Lakes' standards, the field headed out for a mini-shotgun start.

In the end, home course knowledge proved invaluable, with Chris claiming the title with an impressive 36 points, backing up his 2025 victory at Tea Tree Gully GC. Chapter Life member, Paul Sutcliffe, finished runner-up on 33 points, while Westward Ho GC's Colin Anderson placed third on 32 points.

Overall, the event provided an excellent start to the SA/NT chapter calendar, offering valuable opportunities for members to network with peers, share ideas and enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed and engaging environment.

A sincere thank you to Chris, his team and the South Lakes board for generously hosting the day. Thanks also to Callaway for its ongoing support through the provision of a strong selection of prizes.

Industry Movements

The WA chapter welcomes back Fiza Errington and Josh Madden, who have both landed GM roles at Melville Glades GC and Lakelands GC respectively.

Andrew MacAuslan has made the move from Margaret River GC to Busselton GC as their newly appointed GM.

WA GC has seen two recent appointments - house manager, Nigel Cameron, moving from Gosnells GC, and golf manager, Phil Mackay, relocating from Lake Karrinyup CC, with Pinjarra GC's Mitchell Sheather replacing Mackay as Head of Golf at Lake Karrinyup.

Byron Bay GC has recently appointed former Mackay GC GM, David Roche to their vacant GM role.

Grant Williams has crossed the country, departing Busselton GC in the west and taking up the head professional role at The Springs GC on the NSW Central Coast.

SECURING YOUR CLUB’S LEGACY Through Community-First Development

At Pariter, we believe that the most successful projects aren’t developer-led, they’re club-led. And the goal isn’t a building, it’s a legacy. Today, that thinking is being realised on the ground – through active projects where planning has transitioned into delivery.

SNAPSHOT: CUMBERLAND COUNTRY GOLF CLUB

• A medium-density, architecturally sensitive retirement community designed around the club’s ethos.

• Enhanced member amenities and improved financial stability.

• A future-proofed club brand and a broader community connection − achieved without sacrificing tradition.

Development as a Strategy, Not Just a Project

Land development offers golf clubs a long-term strategic pathway beyond one-time capital. With the right partner, clubs can:

• Shape the future of their land and facilities

• Retain brand identity and club culture

• Generate recurring revenue streams to support long-term sustainability

• Strengthen community relevance through integrated living and renewed patronage

Principles of a Community-First Partnership

At Pariter, our partnerships focus on:

• Respecting the past: Co-branded solutions that retain the club’s identity and autonomy.

• Planning for relevance: Projects that attract

Recognising an opportunity to strengthen its future , Cumberland Country Golf Club partnered with Pariter to unlock land value, while preserving its 18-hole golf course. The outcome:

• Display suite now open, generating strong early engagement and a positive pre-sales response.

new members, activate underused land, and foster intergenerational connection.

• Ensuring ongoing club involvement: Governance models where clubs remain active stewards of their future.

Building Trust and Managing Stakeholders

Gaining member and community support requires more than financial rationale. It demands trust, transparency, and shared vision.

Our approach includes:

• Early co-design with Boards and members

• Staged, transparent communications throughout planning and delivery

• Brand stewardship, ensuring the Club’s story remains central throughout the development journey.

From Risk to Resilience

Common concerns such as land loss, brand dilution, and operational disruption are actively managed through:

• Joint governance structures

• Brand-aligned design and placemaking

• Clear frameworks for long-term stewardship of both the project and club assets.

Success is a Living Legacy

A successful development delivers:

• A vibrant, sustainable club

• An engaged community of members, residents, and visitors

• Enhanced financial resilience

• A club legacy that is not built over, but built upon.

NSW/ACT chapter leaders gather on the coast at St Michael’s

HARVEY • NSW & ACT CHAPTER COMMITTEE, MUIRFIELD GC GM

The annual NSW/ACT chapter's Presidents, Captains & General Managers golf day was held at St Michael’s Golf Club on Tuesday, 24th March.

The event is always proudly sponsored by Club Car and InGolf & Utility, and this year was no exception. Joel Monahan and Ralph Chalmers, from InGolf & Utility, attended the

day, ensuring everyone was kept up-to-date with what is happening in the motorised cart and Club Car space. The retiring Kevin Gates was also present for Club Car and was given a fitting send-off after 28 years of support to GMA and Club Car.

The day was perfect and the course was in suberb condition. The greens were wellpaced and the friendly pins provided ample opportunity for a good score, even though the course won in many instances.

The John Allenson Trophy was what the respective club teams were playing for, which is an aggregate of the three scores (president, captain and general manager). Some teams had their vice-president or vice-captain playing, and this is accepted, but there had to be at least one from each, in the group, to be eligible for the trophy. Oatlands GC took out the trophy by one shot from Moss Vale GC. The Oatlands team (main picture above) consisted of GM, Rob Blain, president Colin McRae, and captain Matthew Seamons.

General managers also play for the Alex Marks Trophy through their individual Stableford score. This year, Andrew Laplain, from Cumberland GC (pictured left) held up the trophy with an exceptional 41 points off a handicap of 19. Second place went to Daniel Constable from Manly GC, with a

great score of 40 points off a handicap of 10. On any other day, Daniel would have romped home, but Andrew stood tall above the rest with his fine performance.

Other winners for the day included Ben McDermott (Schweppes) winning the sponsors trophy with 38 points, Carl Dumbrell (St Michael’s) taking out the president’s trophy with 38 points, and Anthony Dekievit (The Coast) taking home the best captain’s trophy with 37 points.

During dinner, Courtney Flores interviewed industry experts, Joel Monahan, Ingolf & Utility, and Mike Covey, from Shield Training, providing important insights into dealing with emergency events on the golf course.

Special thanks to Jeff Wagner, his St Michael’s GC team and board for hosting the event, and all the sponsors who supported the day. Refreshments across the day and into the evening were supplied by Schweppes and we thank them for their support.

Gailes GC triumphs at the 2026 GMA Executive Day

The tradition of the GMA Executive Day, supported by Schweppes, continued in spectacular fashion this year, marking another chapter in the history of the prestigious EC Coker Shield.

First established in 1988, this premier event on the Queensland calendar has now reached its 38th year of celebrating the legacy of GMA Life member, Mr. EC “Ted” Coker.

The 2026 edition moved to the challenging and picturesque Brookwater G&CC.

Following a strong turnout in previous years, a field of 76 players took to the course to battle for the coveted shield.

The unique format remained a highlight, with each GMA member bringing three club executives. These players were paired up and shuffled with other clubs, with their combined team scores determining the ultimate shield winner.

Gailes GC emerged victorious as the 2026 EC Coker Shield winners (pictured top right). It was a two shot margin at the top of the leaderboard, with Nudgee GC putting up a valiant effort to finish as runners-up for the day.

This is a 3rd-time win for Gailes; their first win being in 1995.

A separate 4BBB team event was run in conjunction for all players, corporate partners and members. Congratulations to the top eight teams who led the field (results bottom right).

The success of the GMA Executive Day relies heavily on the hospitality of the host venue and the support of our corporate partners. A big thank you goes to:

» Patrick Young, GC of Brookwater G&CC, and his entire team, for providing a firstclass experience.

» David Mann and Adam Downey, from Schweppes, for their continued dedication to the GMA QLD Chapter.

» Daniel Butler, from Titleist/Footjoy, for supplying the exceptional prizes.

» Tim Orgill, Golf Genius, for assisting in all the scoring and event management.

As we wrap up another successful gathering of club leaders and industry partners, we look forward to seeing you all again next year!

Held in February and March respectively, the Staff Golf Day at The Dunes GL and the Managers & Guests Golf Day at The Eastern Golf Club highlighted the strong engagement, camaraderie and industry support that continues to underpin the chapter’s event calendar. Across both days, participants were treated to quality golf, excellent hospitality and valuable opportunities to connect in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.

STAFF DAY OPENS THE YEAR AT THE DUNES

The 2026 Staff Golf Day, proudly supported by Victor Insurance, provided the perfect opening to the year as 82 participants gathered at The Dunes in February.

Played under ideal conditions with an 8:00am shotgun start, the day delivered everything participants could have hoped for at one of Australia’s premier publicaccess courses. The Dunes was presented in excellent condition, with firm running

fairways, beautifully contoured greens and the unmistakable character of a championship links layout combining to create a first-class golfing experience.

Victor Insurance was represented on the day by Paul Mullarvey and Hayden Baker, while Jessica Wood, GM of The Dunes, and her team were warmly acknowledged for ensuring both the course and clubhouse were presented to an exceptional standard. Support from GMA’s broader partner network also added to the success of the event, with representatives from Callaway, Golf Genius, Schweppes and Club Car helping to create a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere throughout the day.

Competition on course was spirited and enjoyable, with Cam Andrews (The Dunes) taking out the individual Stableford event (pictured right), while Club Car’s Joel Monahan enjoyed a particularly strong day, claiming best sponsor/supporter honours and teaming up with Andrew Bayliss to win the teams event (pictured next page top left). Novelty competitions added to the occasion and contributed to a fun and engaging day for all involved.

With strong attendance, ideal weather and a venue of the highest calibre, the Staff Golf Day set a positive and memorable tone for the year ahead.

EASTERN DELIVERS A LONGAWAITED SUCCESS

Just under a month later, members and guests travelled to The Eastern GC in the Yarra Valley for the 2026 Managers & Guests Golf Day, proudly supported by Toro.

For many in attendance, the event carried added significance. As GM, Brett Nelson, noted in welcoming the field, GMA had made several previous attempts to host the event at Eastern, only to be thwarted by extreme weather and difficult conditions. This year, however, the wait was finally rewarded, with clear skies and a beautifully presented course allowing participants to enjoy the venue exactly as intended.

Played in a Gentsomes format, the day unfolded smoothly, with a strong emphasis

ROD HAINES • OPERATIONS MANAGER (VIC/TAS)

on ready golf, course care and pace of play. The format struck the right balance between competition and camaraderie, allowing players to enjoy both the course and the occasion in equal measure.

Eastern’s hospitality was a highlight throughout the day, with the clubhouse, food and beverage teams recognised for their contribution to a polished and enjoyable event. Brett also acknowledged GMA’s valued partnership with Toro, the event’s presenting partner, with Mark Johnson and Chris Bolden representing Toro on the day. During post-round proceedings, attendees were treated to a Q&A with Mark, whose reflections on his journey from hands-on turf beginnings in Queensland to his current leadership role with Toro resonated strongly with many in the room.

The strength of GMA’s partner network was again on display, with support from Schweppes, Club Car, Hostplus, MiClub, Callaway and Future Golf helping to bring the day to life. Callaway was also acknowledged for supplying the golf prizes and ensuring each participant received

a sleeve of golf balls at registration, a thoughtful touch that added to the professionalism of the event.

On course, the team event was closely contested, with just one point separating the leading groups. Paul Vardy, Steve Harris and Chris Little (pictured above right) claimed the win with 102 points in a strong finish to a memorable day.

After several false starts over the years, Eastern’s long-awaited hosting of the Managers & Guests Golf Day proved well worth the wait and was another fitting highlight of the early 2026 calendar.

A STRONG PLATFORM FOR THE YEAR AHEAD

Together, both events provided an excellent reminder of what GMA chapter events do so well, bringing people together through quality venues, shared experiences and strong industry partnerships.

From the championship links of The Dunes to the picturesque surrounds of Eastern GC, both days gave members and supporters the chance to connect beyond the day-to-day demands of the workplace, strengthen relationships across the industry and enjoy the camaraderie that continues to define the GMA network.

The VIC/TAS chapter extends its sincere thanks to both host venues, the organising teams and all supporting partners who contributed to the success of these two events. With such a strong opening to the year, the chapter is well placed for another rewarding and wellsupported 2026.

Nudgee goes back-toback at QLD Manager/ Pro challenge

After a brief postponement from its original 2025 date, the Club Car QLD Manager/Pro 4BBB finally hit the fairways in February.

The wait was well worth it as a field of 48 players descended upon Oxley GC in Brisbane for a day defined by high-stakes competition, industry insight and a sea of yellow in support of a noble cause.

A REPEAT VICTORY

History repeated itself at the top of the leaderboard with Nudgee GC general manager, Darren Richards, and PGA head professional, Chris Duke, proving they are still the team to beat, successfully defending their 2025 title. The duo posted a rock-solid 42 points, just managing to pip Woodford GC's Dean Dagen and Jack Day on a countback, to secure this year's manager/ pro trophy.

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS & TRIBUTES

The morning wasn’t all about the golf; it served as a vital hub for education and networking.

» A Legacy Honoured: Life member, Max Mason, delivered a heartfelt tribute to retiring Club Car chief, Kevin Gates. Reflecting on a meeting in Perth in the late 90s, Max noted that Kevin’s vision for a streamlined industry kickstarted a

partnership between Club Car and GMA that has flourished for over 20 years.

» PGA Support: Broc Greenhalgh (QLD/ NT PGA state manager) facilitated a deep dive into the promotional services available to PGA members.

» Oxley’s Evolution: Host GM, Aaron Muirhead, shared the exciting news that the club's new development plans were approved by a staggering 85% member vote just that week.

Navigating security challenges: IP cameras and facial recognition

PARTNER EDITORIAL • SECOM TECHNOLOGY

As surveillance technology advances, many businesses now rely on Internet Protocol (IP) cameras and facial recognition systems to strengthen security and operational oversight. However, their connectivity and data processing capabilities can also introduce cybersecurity risks.

Recent scrutiny by the Australian government of overseas-manufactured surveillance equipment has highlighted potential vulnerabilities, particularly with some Chinese-made cameras. This has prompted venue operators to consider both the risks and the availability of safer alternatives.

IP camera systems are widely used in modern venues, providing real-time monitoring and cloud-based remote access. Yet weak passwords, outdated firmware and limited encryption can leave systems vulnerable to unauthorised access or footage manipulation. Facial recognition systems also face risks, including spoofing attacks using photos or video.

For venues, a security breach could expose surveillance feeds, compromise stored data or lead to misuse of biometric information, creating significant operational, financial and reputational risks.

Hanwha Vision, supplied and supported locally by Security Interactive to Australian venues, provides an alternative approach designed to address these concerns. The company’s systems incorporate strong

cybersecurity protections including endto-end encryption, robust authentication protocols and compliance with international security standards.

With manufacturing facilities in South Korea and Vietnam, Hanwha Vision also focuses on supply-chain security and regulatory compliance. The company’s technology credentials are further supported by its involvement in major defence projects, including Australia’s Redback infantry fighting vehicle program.

As cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, reviewing surveillance infrastructure has become an important step for clubs and casinos seeking to protect both operational security and sensitive data.

Teeing up team spirit at Lake Karrinyup

General managers and their teams visited Lake Karrinyup CC for WA chapter's annual GM & Staff golf day in March. The event provided a relaxed and enjoyable opportunity for staff to spend time together outside of the work environment.

Held on the nine-hole North course, players had the option to enter an individual Stableford competition, with congratulations going to Brad Hebble from Nedlands GC, who took out the honours. A number of oncourse novelties were generously sponsored by GMA’s elite partner, Club Car, and we thank Grant and Simon for coming along and joining in on the fun.

While players were out on the course, others had the opportunity to take part in a clinic led by Lake Karrinyup PGA professional, Rachel Campbell. The session was enjoyed by both beginners and experienced golfers, with many taking the opportunity to learn the fundamentals and refine their skills in a relaxed and supportive setting.

It was also wonderful to see some of the beginners, who were brave enough to play, receive encouragement and helpful tips

from their general managers on course.

The event was proudly supported by Schweppes, GMA’s major partner. It was great to have Josh and Ben join in the day’s festivities, ensuring everyone was well hydrated with water, Gatorade and soft drinks available throughout the afternoon.

Following golf, everyone gathered for a relaxed sundowner and poolside BBQ buffet. Guests enjoyed a selection of beers from Gage Roads Brewing Co and wines from De Bortoli, rounding out a fantastic day of networking and fun. It was also lovely to welcome Jo Jones from Hostplus, GMA’s elite partner, who joined the group for dinner.

Our thanks to GM, Mark Adams, and the Lake Karrinyup team, for their wonderful hospitality.

THE PATH FOLLOWED

The Sharon Purnell Story

Sharon Purnell has been General Manager of Mount Coolum Golf Club since 2008, some 18 years ago.

For some managers that’s the journey in itself.

For Sharon, it’s only part of a long road travelled … in her own way.

WORDS: KAREN HARDING

"March on. Do not tarry …. March on, and fear not the thorns or the sharp stones on life's path."
- Khalil Gibran

It’s curious, isn’t it, the journey that people take in their working lives. How is it that a certain profession can be the same destination for so many but the road travelled be so different?

The story of Sharon Purnell is a case in point.

Sharon did not come from a golfing family nor did she plan on a career in the golf industry. Truth be told, as a youngster other sports appealed greatly and golf held little interest. And yet here she is, not only a handy player – a three-time winner of the GMA Billie Friedlander Trophy – but soon to be formally acknowledged by GMA for her professionalism over 40 years in golf management and administration.

The way it has played out might suggest to an onlooker that it was all planned from the beginning. But it was not – most certainly not. What it was, was the path followed by someone doing it their own way, following nose and instinct, and seeking to do things as well as possible.

It all started in earnest at age 17. Born in Queensland, Sharon and family initially lived in Roma out west before relocating to the Sunshine Coast when she was six. The family lived within walking distance of Headland GC and from that, her path into golf opened up.

“We used to go on the golf course as kids and play a little golf and just muck around. But I was really into other sports. At school I did well with finance subjects – bookkeeping and that side –and I then got a job at Headland when I was 17. So it was funny that my path ended up going that way. And it just snowballed from there.”

Sharon worked in reception for five years and loved it. Loved the interaction with people, loved talking to the members as they came in and asking them how their game was, loved dealing with other staff.

An assistant manager role was then created and Sharon stepped into that for the next 15 years.

And, “I loved my time there too, I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Hard work and mentors have helped guide her path. As has her willingness to learn and to adapt to change where necessary.

About 10 years in, Headland club pro John Victorsen took her aside and told her that if she really wanted to progress her career in the golf industry, she needed to get out on course and understand the game more.

“He took me under his wing and we did some lessons. So that’s how I really got into it.”

The first GM under whom Sharon worked was one of the industry’s pioneers, the late Val Robson, followed by Darryl Wilson. It was Darryl who encouraged the committee to promote her to the assistant manager role.

Of Val, Sharon said: “Val was an amazing manager and mentor. She was like a second mother to me. She taught me so much, especially the financial aspects. We had a very close working relationship and a beautiful friendship outside of work.

“I’m pretty sure she was the first female GM in Queensland. And I saw how tough it was back then for women in this industry.”

Following Wilson, Sharon was 2IC to Tim Gahan, who later worked at several other clubs before returning to Headland in mid-2023. The two worked well together and have remained in close contact, often playing golf together at that club. Indeed, a nugget from the club newsletter Headland Headliners from February 2023 told of their win, some 20 years after their professional association started, in a Saturday

4BBB Aggregate, in which the pair accumulated 77 stableford points – Tim 40 and Sharon 37. It remains their only win together – so far.

“Tim is definitely a mentor as well as friend. We communicate all the time. We’re always throwing ideas at each other. He’s worked at some quite prestigious clubs down south and has seen a lot. He’s been great.”

Of Sharon, Tim said,” I am continually impressed by her drive and passion for the industry, especially club management. I am fortunate to call her a colleague, a confidant and, most importantly, a friend. Both being members at

Headland allows us to catch up and play golf together, have a laugh, and also catch up on what’s going on in clubland.”

In 2003 Sharon was appointed General Manager at Caloundra GC. Moving to a more senior position was initially a bit of a culture shock –but another growth opportunity.

“Everybody said, it’s very different going from a 2IC role to a manager’s role. And it was. I said to my parents, it’s not the same, and they said, well, you need a bit of tough love and learn to have some thick skin pretty quickly or you’ll have the shortest GM job in history.

“So I did learn that and 23 years later, I’m still doing the job.”

While at Caloundra, another mentor emerged in the form of Max Mason, then at Nudgee GC and also President of the then GMAQ (Golf Management Australia – Queensland Division).

“There was a vacancy on GMAQ, so I went on as a committee person in 2006. In 2014, when the Secretary/Treasurer role was divided, I was elected Secretary and served in that role until amalgamation in 2024 when GMAQ became GMA, Queensland Chapter. Max was a huge mentor, to be honest.”

It was through GMAQ that Sharon added to her professional arsenal. She has twice been awarded a bursary to attend the World Conference and Club Business Expo, the first in 2008 while at Caloundra and the second in 2020 when at Mount Coolum.

In addition she achieved her accreditation in 2007 through the Club Managers Association of Australia (CMAA), of which she has been a member for just over 30 years. And she completed a Diploma of Management in 2013 through Prime Learning.

Like other members, Sharon draws much from the GMA community at both social and professional level, particularly through the biennial conference.

“I definitely do find that when you go to these, you get recharged, you always come away with ideas. And I also love the networking side because you can always reach out to others, to people who understand what our work involves.”

Sharon, pictured here with GMA Life member, Billie Friedlander, after winning her third "Billie" at the 2019 GMA national conference golf day, hosted at Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club.

Australian design + development

Dedicated local support team

Seamless integration with MiClub

“A couple of years ago, Mount Coolum turned one-year terms into two-year and then staggered them so we had more continuity and that has definitely improved things. And we’ve focussed a lot on corporate governance and governance training, bringing in CPR Group, and over the last few years that’s been really good too.

“It’s taken a long, long time but I think boards are now really starting to get a grasp of the governance side of it and the day-to-day business operation compared to the strategic planning of the business. A lot of the time they hadn’t understood the difference and that’s when boundaries are pushed and they can try to micromanage and question.”

Although female general managers are still in smaller number to male, the number of women on boards has increased and their profile has also changed. More frequently now, they come from corporate or professional backgrounds and the Golf Leaders Network (GLN) has arisen to support them.

At Mount Coolum, two of the seven board members are women. Liz Cooper has been club captain since 2024, was women’s captain prior to that, and has both substantial experience on golf club committees and an impressive professional background; Joy Godfrey has held management roles for over 25 years with Mission Australia and in 2021 was awarded an OAM for service to the community through charitable initiatives.

The club is particularly strong in its support of juniors. There are around 30, 12 of which are associated with the wonderful Australian Junior

Girls Scholarship Program founded by Bonnie Boezeman and overseen by the Australian Golf Foundation.

The club further supports junior golf through events, having hosted the Tee Mates 2-Day Summer Classic in January. The tournament, open to Tee Mates members, has been hosted by Mount Coolum for around 20 years and includes being a qualifying event (for the 18-hole players) for the Greg Norman Junior Masters.

Mount Coolum also hosted the US Kids Golf’s fifth local Sunshine Coast Tour event in early March.

“I love seeing these young kids when they’re really young and out there doing their six or nine holes. A couple of our junior golfers … I just think, oh, they were so little and they’ve just come such a long way; they might have started on a 30 handicap and now, a few years later, they’re down on single figures.”

The club also conducts a Cadet Program, established in 2008 prior to Sharon’s arrival. Originally run by volunteers, for the past 15 years it has been managed by the pro shop for kids aged seven to 13. Club assistant pro ‘TJ’ King is a graduate.

Sharon was a member of the victorious QLD state team at the 2017 GMA national conference golf day, played at Royal Adelaide GC. The team is pictured here with their honorary captain, GMA and GMAQ Life member, the late Ted Coker.
The 2024 QLD state team, including Sharon, at the GMA national conference golf day, held in her home state, at The Brisbane Golf Club.

“I think it’s a fantastic industry. I’ve been lucky, I’ve been very well respected. But it can be a tough gig for women, really tough. It’s still very male dominated, so I’d like to see more and more women in this sector.”

TJ’s position at the club is just one example of the culture Sharon has fostered. Sharon likes to hold her ‘people’ close. She has a core of them she has known well and for a long time, shares a vision with them and has a dynamic relationship with them.

“That’s one of the things I’ve found, that I just formed some wonderful friendships and I think you just keep those friendships for life. We’re on the same page and you’ve got to have that with your heads of departments and your pro. You’ve got to respect them but you’ve got to earn their respect too.”

There’s also the value of experience. Consider this: Steve Jenkins (club professional) has had 40 years in the golf industry; Todd McNamee (course superintendent) 38 years; Charlie McGill 30 years and Gary Wood (bar manager) 45 years. Add that to Sharon’s own 40 years and

Mount Coolum has 193 years of experience in its core staff.

“We’re very lucky to have all that experience under one roof. I tell the board that!”

Looking over her long career and what she’d like to see next, Sharon answers quickly: “I would really like to see more female managers. I think we make good managers; we’re generally very well organised.

“I think it’s a fantastic industry. I’ve been lucky, I’ve been very well respected. But it can be a tough gig for women, really tough. It’s still very male dominated, so I’d like to see more and more women in this sector.”

For all the challenges and the busyness, Sharon still loves the job and the game. She tries to play fortnightly and has recently returned from a

trip to Queenstown, New Zealand, with a close friend.

“It completely lived up to the hype, such a stunning part of the world. Ticking off Jacks Point from my bucket list made it even better. I can’t wait to go back.”

She’s now looking towards the 2026 GMA conference, where she’ll catch up with colleagues and attempt to win a fourth Billie, having won in 2009, 2011 and 2019 and being just pipped in 2024 by Fiza Errington.

And she’ll continue her connection to Mount Coolum members through her personal sponsorship of golf days, something she’s been doing from the start. It’s her way of giving back, not just to Mount Coolum and its members but to a profession and a game she has, surprisingly, come to love.

We'll see you there in June!

"For those in golf club and facility leadership, it remains one of the rare opportunities to step back from immediate operational pressures and engage with the wider strategic, financial and organisational issues affecting clubs today."

Each GMA national conference provides an important point of reference for the industry.

It is the time in the calendar when club leaders, course managers, industry partners and emerging professionals step away from the demands of daily operations to engage with the broader issues shaping golf and facility management across the country.

The 2026 GMA/ASTMA Conference & Trade Exhibition is set to do exactly that, with Melbourne to host what is again expected to be the largest gathering of golf and turf professionals in Australia.

To be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) from 21st to 25th June, the 2026 conference will once again see GMA and the Australian Sports Turf Managers Association (ASTMA) combine to deliver a national event of considerable scale and relevance.

Supported by GMA major partner Schweppes, the conference is expected to attract more than 1,000 delegates from clubs and facilities throughout Australia, reinforcing its place as the pre-eminent professional development and networking event on the national golf industry calendar. The trade exhibition, spanning more than 6,000 square metres, will again be a central feature of the week.

Scale, however, is only part of the story. The value of the national conference lies in its ability to bring the industry together in a way few other events can.

For those in golf club and facility leadership, it remains one of the rare opportunities to step back from immediate operational pressures and engage with the wider strategic, financial and organisational issues affecting clubs today. It allows delegates to benchmark with peers, assess emerging trends, challenge existing thinking and

return to their clubs with practical insight that can be applied across governance, planning, team leadership and service delivery.

That intent is clearly reflected in the 2026 program.

Educational content will run across concurrent streams in leadership and management, golf course and sportsfields, supported by workshops, panel sessions and structured networking opportunities. Across the week, the program will examine many of the themes now central to contemporary club leadership, including governance, capital planning, membership, financial performance, course and facility development, workforce capability, sustainability, innovation, risk management and the growing role of technology and AI in club operations.

For delegates at all levels, the value of the week will lie not only in hearing from respected speakers, but in the practical application of those ideas within their own club environments.

The keynote speaker line-up reinforces that approach. Rather than relying on profile alone, the 2026 program brings together speakers whose experience aligns closely with the leadership, performance and change-management challenges faced by modern clubs.

Among the keynote speakers already announced are Liz Ellis AO, Gary Pert, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki AM and Daniel Flynn. While each comes from a different professional context, all bring perspectives with clear relevance to golf management.

Ellis’ background in elite sport, media and governance speaks directly to planning, accountability and sustained performance. Pert’s executive career across AFL and media provides a practical lens on organisational leadership, strategic alignment and performance culture. Dr Karl’s session on science, technology and artificial intelligence is a timely inclusion as clubs increasingly assess how these forces may influence operations, staffing, data use and member experience. Flynn, through his work as co-founder of Thankyou, brings a perspective grounded in innovation, purpose-led leadership and organisational differentiation.

Together, they provide a keynote framework that is broad in subject matter, but well aligned to the realities of contemporary club leadership.

International presenters Ray Cronin of Club Benchmarking and James Cronk (Golf Guru) are likely to be of particular interest to delegates focused on finance, benchmarking, capital investment, customer experience and private club performance.

Also featuring are Lindsey Leigh Hobson, Dawid Naude, Sean Bell and Kurt Fearnley AO, alongside a wider mix of presenters and panellists contributing expertise across leadership, communication, resilience, technology and operational practice. The result is a program designed less as a series of stand-alone presentations and more as a considered body of content addressing the issues currently shaping clubs and facilities across Australia.

As is always the case with a GMA national conference, however, the formal education program tells only part of the story.

The golf and social schedule remains a defining strength of the event, not as a secondary inclusion, but as a genuine extension of the learning and relationship-building that takes place throughout the week. In an industry where trusted networks, peer exchange and informal problemsolving are often just as valuable as formal presentations, these events continue to hold an important place in the overall conference experience.

Monday’s schedule will again be one of the week’s key features.

Delegates will have the option of participating in the GMA Golf Day at The National GC on the Mornington Peninsula or taking part in the Mornington Peninsula Experience Club Tour. For those playing golf, the opportunity to experience The National’s Moonah and Gunnamatta courses will be a significant drawcard. For those opting for the club tour, behind-thescenes access to Peninsula Kingswood CGC and Sorrento GC offers a different, but equally worthwhile, form of professional engagement.

Both streams conclude with dinner and drinks at The National, allowing delegates to come

The broader speaker group adds further depth.

back together in a setting that consistently generates some of the most valuable conversations of the week.

That emphasis on connection continues across the broader social program.

The opening reception cocktail event at The Aviary, Crown Melbourne, on Sunday evening and presented by Club Car, provides the first opportunity for delegates to reconnect with colleagues and establish new relationships at the outset of the conference.

Tuesday’s GMA Gala Dinner, presented by Schweppes, and Wednesday evening’s

Social Networking Night at Marvel Stadium will continue that rhythm, creating space for informal discussion away from the conference floor.

These functions have long been an important part of the national conference, not simply because of the settings in which they are held, but because of the conversations and networking they enable. For many attendees, it is in these environments that practical ideas are exchanged most openly, relationships are strengthened, and the collective value of the week becomes most evident.

The trade exhibition will again round out that experience in a highly practical way.

As the largest exhibition staged as part of a GMA/ASTMA conference, it will provide direct access to a broad range of suppliers, service providers and industry partners supporting clubs across course operations, clubhouse services, technology, infrastructure, fleet, retail and food and beverage.

For many delegates, this remains one of the most efficient and useful components of the week, allowing focused conversations

with businesses that can directly influence operational outcomes back at club level. Taken as a whole, the 2026 GMA/ASTMA Conference & Trade Exhibition presents a substantial professional development opportunity for those involved in club and facility leadership.

The combination of relevant education, experienced speakers, practical industry content, peer engagement and direct access to suppliers ensures the event continues to hold an important place on the national calendar.

For returning delegates, it will continue a well-established tradition of industry connection and learning.

For first-time attendees, it will provide a clear sense of the breadth of the profession, the complexity of modern club management, and the value of remaining actively engaged with both.

We can't wait to welcome you to Melbourne in June.

As a premier partner and presenter at the summit, Pariter were able to provide members with an insight into the many options that can be considered."

We appreciate the support of Pariter in extending their agreement with GMA, and in doing so, bringing new knowledge and ideas to the table.

Rabobank Deposits - Saving That Suits to a Tee

What Cromer Golf Club General Manager Melissa Ellis may lack in gol ng talent, she more than makes up for in passion, leadership and a genuine love for the game.

Located on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Cromer Golf Club is a community-based, not for pro t sporting organisation for the use of members and guests, and its diverse o ering ensures Melissa’s role brims with variety.

“I’ll admit I’m a very poor golfer, although there is so much to do in a day that I rarely get time for golf regardless,” she laughs.

“From member interface to overseeing the golf course, The Clubhouse, The Black Swan Café, functions, and the behind the scenes logistics and operational requirements, I enjoy the variety my role a ords on any given day.”

“There are a lot of arms to the organisation, it’s a big business with a diverse o ering, we employ over 50 sta and it does require precision management.”

Melissa said that nding an organisation to best leverage the club’s deposits has been a challenge over recent years, with consistently poor service a struggle.

“We need to be able to have access to these funds when we need them, and in the past we became increasingly frustrated by the lack of response when dealing with fund managers.”

Having previously waited 21 days to access a signi cant amount of money after a trust reached maturity was the nal straw.

Having moved the business over to Rabobank’s Relationship Deposits team, Melissa said she was instantly blown away by the ease of doing business.

“The Rabo team are just so friendly, and I couldn’t believe that we got everything transferred and set up in one day.”

“Now when I make a call, there is a person at the end of the line, prompt, engaged and generous in providing whatever support we need.”

“Rabobank products make it easy to invest, and give us exibility to move funds around and manage our interest rates as we need to.”

And with the long-term vision for the club featuring a large capital project, the club is optimistic its nancial future is strong.

New branding & partnership extension for Transform Golf Shops

Golf Management Australia (GMA) is pleased to announce that Transform Golf Shops have extended their corporate partnership.

Leadership transition complete at Club Car

Club Car is pleased to confirm the completion of their leadership transition across Australia and the Oceania region.

This next phase represents renewed momentum for the Club Car brand in Australia. Channel partners and customers can expect:

The continuation of the agreement sees Transform Golf Shops introduce updated branding, including a slight name evolution, while maintaining their core focus on delivering innovative, commercially driven solutions for members and their club’s golf shops.

Ross Haron, Director at Transform Golf Shops, said, “Sonia and I are proud of our collaboration with GMA and our contribution to the golf industry. We’ve shone a bright light on golf shops and the importance for clubs of all statures to maximise their golf

GMA CEO, Paul Vardy, said, "We are looking forward to more collaboration with Ross and Sonia, who have delivered exceptional transformations in the way golf shops are designed, presented and operated across the industry." He added that Transform Golf Shops’ expertise continues to provide significant value to GMA members and their facilities nationwide.

Golf Australia launches major new resource suites for clubs

Golf Australia has expanded its national support for golf administrators with the launch of two significant new resource suites now live on the Club & Venue Hub at GOLF.com.au, including a comprehensive Club Disaster Resilience Toolkit and a new Strategic Marketing Guidelines package.

Designed specifically for General Managers, club administrators and volunteers, the new resources provide practical, ready-touse frameworks that can be implemented immediately, whether that’s formalising a continuity plan, strengthening governance processes, building a structured 12-month marketing calendar, or executing targeted campaigns to grow membership and revenue. Together, they strengthen what is fast becoming a centralised resources and support platform for club leaders across Australia.

NEW DISASTER RESILIENCE TOOLKIT RESPONDS TO GROWING RISK ENVIRONMENT

With natural disasters increasingly impacting golf facilities nationwide, the new Club Resilience and Continuity Toolkit provides clubs with a structured framework to prepare for, respond to and recover from major events.

Built around the Prevention, Preparedness, Response and Recovery (PPRR) model, the toolkit includes:

» A practical continuity planning guide

» Hazard-specific response sheets for bushfire, cyclone, flood and severe storm

» Recovery action guides covering site safety, utilities and WHS considerations

» A structured disaster review template

» Preparation checklists addressing emergency planning, documentation and data protection

Clubs including Carbrook, Riverside, Townsville and Tamborine Mountain Golf Clubs share firsthand insights from managing flood and severe weather events, highlighting practical measures that reduced closure periods, protected critical assets, strengthened insurance and grant claims through proper documentation, and improved volunteer coordination during recovery. Their experiences demonstrate that disaster resilience is not theoretical, it is operational, financial, community-focused, and achievable through structured planning.

The toolkit provides clubs without a formal resilience framework with a clear practical starting point. Those with existing plans can use the materials to review, test and strengthen their current systems with best practice.

In an operating environment where disaster recovery costs can escalate quickly and business interruptions often represents the most significant financial impact the toolkit supports clubs to make disaster preparedness a governance priority rather than a reactive measure.

The Disaster Resilience Toolkit has been developed in partnership with leading sports governance, planning and community development provider, CPR Group and supported by funding from the Queensland Government through the Active Industry Base Fund (AIBF) program. While supported through Queensland funding, the resources have been designed for application by clubs nationally.

EXPANDED STRATEGIC MARKETING SUITE FOCUSES ON EXECUTION

Alongside the resilience resources, Golf Australia has released a Strategic Marketing suite designed to support commercial growth across clubs of all sizes and capability levels.

Developed in partnership with golf club marketing specialist Mariela Zaharija (Marketing Golf), the suite recognises that clubs operate with very different internal resources. As a result, it has been structured across two distinct streams.

The Essentials stream is designed for clubs without a dedicated marketing team. It provides clear, practical guidance that administrators and volunteers can implement themselves. These resources walk clubs step-by-step through defining their brand foundations, identifying priority audiences, setting SMART goals and building a simple but effective 12-month campaign calendar.

The Extended stream is designed for clubs with a marketing manager or dedicated resource in place. It goes deeper into campaign structure, audience targeting, content systems, paid advertising strategy and performance optimisation, providing more advanced frameworks to drive measurable growth.

Across both streams, the materials are supported by practical workbooks and detailed “How-To” guides that focus on execution, not theory.

The suite covers:

» Brand positioning and audience segmentation

» Campaign calendar planning aligned to business priorities

» Email marketing setup and automation

» Paid advertising across Meta platforms and LinkedIn

» Google Search and Display advertising

» Local Area Marketing strategies and partnerships

» Organic social media planning and content systems

» Photography fundamentals for in-house content creation

The emphasis throughout is on practical application. The resources break marketing into manageable actions, from clarifying your value proposition and identifying revenue priorities, through to writing campaign copy, structuring paid ads and tracking results.

For clubs looking to grow membership, increase green fee revenue, strengthen midweek trade, promote events or improve retention, the suite provides a repeatable system rather than one-off ideas. It enables clubs to move from reactive marketing activity to a structured, commercially aligned approach, regardless of whether marketing sits with the GM, a committee member or a dedicated specialist.

A CENTRAL HUB DESIGNED FOR CLUB ADMINISTRATORS

Both new resources are housed within the Golf Australia Club & Venue Hub, a dedicated platform for information relevant to club and facility administrators including governance, handicapping, participation, marketing, workforce capability and operational management.

The Hub’s streamlined search functionality surfaces club-relevant materials only, allowing administrators to quickly locate guidance without navigating consumerfacing content.

The Club and Venue Resource Hub is available on the GOLF.com.au website: golf.com.au/club-and-venue-hub

Behind the operations: Strengthening service across Queensland

First Choice Services is a national facilities management provider delivering cleaning and facility support services to a wide range of industries across Australia, including many golf clubs within the Golf Management Australia network.

At First Choice Services, the success of any facilities management program comes down to strong operational leadership and clear communication on the ground. To further support operations across Queensland, the company welcomed Lilian Katalinic to the First Choice Services team last October as State Supervisor.

Working closely with site teams and club management, Lilian plays a key role in maintaining strong relationships and ensuring any operational matters are

addressed proactively. Her approach is highly hands-on, with a strong focus on communication, problem solving and maintaining the level of service clients expect.

Bringing more than 15 years of industry experience, Lilian has managed large-scale cleaning operations across Queensland, including overseeing 168 sites across both metropolitan and regional areas of the state. She has also previously owned and operated her own cleaning company, giving her a strong understanding of the operational, sales, recruitment and business management aspects of running a servicebased business. She understands the importance of supporting staff, maintaining strong client relationships, and ensuring operational systems are working effectively behind the scenes.

“Thanks to the savings from the new Rain Bird CirrusPRO system, we’re effectively using a third less water. That’s massive.”

Since joining First Choice Services, the response from clients has been extremely positive, with many praising Lilian’s responsiveness and proactive approach to site management. Her ability to quickly build strong working relationships has made a significant impact across the sites she supports.

Lilian has also become a valued member among First Choice staff, who appreciate her supportive management style, personable nature and positive attitude.

First Choice Services is proud to have experienced leaders like Lilian supporting clients and ensuring operational standards continue to evolve and improve.

A SHOP FIT BEFITTING ROYAL ADELAIDE

Royal Adelaide GC's transformed professional shop is a bespoke reimagining of a key member touchpoint — blending heritage, functionality and modern retail design in a space that feels unmistakably and uniquely Royal Adelaide.

There are some projects where the outcome speaks for itself. Royal Adelaide GC's newly transformed professional shop is one of them.

Elegant without being overstated, highly functional without compromising atmosphere, and unmistakably aligned with the stature of one of Australia’s most revered golfing institutions, the new space is a retail transformation in the truest sense.

Delivered in partnership with Transform Golf Shops, the Royal Adelaide project was driven by a clear ambition from the outset: to create a space that better reflected the quality of the course, clubhouse and overall member experience, while remaining exactly that — a true professional shop.

With ageing and increasingly unreliable fixtures and fittings, and a fit-out that had served the club for more than 25 years, the timing was right for change. But this was never about change for its own sake. The objective was to create a space that felt welcoming and intuitive for members and guests, efficient for staff, flexible in its merchandising, and distinctly Royal Adelaide in both look and feel.

The result is apparent from the moment of arrival. What was once a relatively understated entry from the breezeway has been redefined through a new awning, façade and entrance window, giving the shop a stronger sense of presence and making it a clear destination within the clubhouse precinct.

The once subtle entry off the breezeway has given way to a proud entry that befits a club of Royal Adelaide’s stature.

“The once subtle entry off the breezeway has given way to a proud entry that befits a club of Royal Adelaide’s stature,” said General Manager Mark Tan. “The shop is laid out to be welcoming to members and guests, yet efficient for the staff to work in.”

Inside, the space has been opened up and refined. A smaller, centrally positioned counter is less imposing and more inviting, natural light has been maximised, and

sightlines have been improved for both customers and staff. The finishes and colour palette deliberately draw from the main clubhouse, creating a seamless visual connection between two of the club’s most important touchpoints and reinforcing a sense of cohesion across the broader facility.

Just as importantly, the transformation extends well beyond what members see on the retail floor. Working thoughtfully with the club, Transform Golf Shops approached the project not only as a design exercise, but as an operational one. Structural changes, including the removal of an external toilet from behind the counter area, reworking of internal walls, and the addition of a mezzanine storage level, have delivered significant practical gains.

The professional shop now benefits from a larger workshop with state-of-the-art repair equipment, a dedicated office and purposebuilt workspace, easier-to-access storage, and a safer, more efficient back-of-house environment for staff. Flexible merchandising fixtures, custom angled shoe displays and a satellite POS station further support the dayto-day retail experience, particularly during busy trading periods.

“In designing the new shop, we prioritised member service, functionality and merchandising flexibility,” said director of golf, Chris Crocker. “We also wanted this space to be a professional shop and not just a clothing store.”

That philosophy is evident throughout. This is a space that comfortably blends modern, highend retail presentation with authentic golf shop functionality, creating an environment that feels both sophisticated and practical. Importantly, it also carries a sense of place. Transform Golf Shops incorporated historic Royal Adelaide elements into the fit-out, subtly connecting the new space to the club’s heritage and helping deliver a retail experience that feels unique to the club rather than borrowed from elsewhere.

For Royal Adelaide, the project is more than a successful refurbishment. It is a statement of

intent — a pro shop experience that honours the club’s history, serves its members with greater efficiency and care, and now sits comfortably alongside the world-class standards already synonymous with the Royal Adelaide name.

Royal Adelaide GC partnered with Transform Golf Shops to deliver a bespoke professional shop fit-out that balanced retail presentation, operational efficiency and club identity. Working closely with the club, the team, led by Ross Haron and Sonia Kirkman, helped create a space that not only elevates the member and guest experience, but also integrates historic Royal Adelaide elements to ensure the final result feels unique to the club and true to its broader clubhouse environment.

Golf Genius: Connecting technology, clubs and the future of golf

PARTNER EDITORIAL • GOLF GENIUS

In today’s dynamic and evolving golf landscape, technology plays an increasingly important role in shaping how golfers engage with the game. From the way competitions are run to how players interact with their club and fellow members, digital tools are helping to create more engaging and enjoyable experiences on and off the course.

At Golf Genius, we are leading this transformation by creating innovative platforms designed to enhance golfers’ experiences and their golfing journey. We provide software and services to the global golf community, with a product suite that supports tournament management, golf shop operations, coaching, beginner golf, twilight golf leagues, and handicap management. While these tools are powerful for industry professionals, their real impact is felt by the golfers themselves — through smoother competitions, engaging events, and a more connected club experience.

At the upcoming Golf Managers Association (GMA) Conference, Golf Genius has an opportunity to listen to the industry to further understand what golfers expect from their clubs, and how technology can help deliver those experiences. It’s important to us that we remain closely connected to the people who make the game special.

CONNECTED TO THE GAME

Golf Genius is built by golfers, for all golfers. This perspective shapes how the technology evolves, with the goal of supporting clubs in creating experiences that golfers genuinely enjoy and come back for more.

So, who are we?

Our team have a deep connection to golf in the region. We believe it’s essential to stay connected to the industry, have a strong understanding of the landscape in

Australia, and continue engaging with clubs, managers, and professionals to ensure our solutions remain relevant and valuable.

A LOCAL TEAM PROVIDING NUANCED SOLUTIONS

The Golf Genius team works closely with clubs and PGA Pros to ensure the platforms align with how golfers interact with competitions, events and club activities. Our insight into local club culture helps shape solutions that feel intuitive for both staff and members.

Visitors to the Golf Genius stand at the GMA Conference will have the chance to meet our team and learn more about how they work alongside clubs to enhance the golfer experience. From supporting major club events to improving day-to-day coaching, the team brings both industry knowledge and practical expertise.

TECHNOLOGY THAT COMPLEMENTS YOUR GOLFING ASPIRATIONS

Golf is a complex and deeply social game that’s built on tradition, competition, and community. Golf Genius embraces that complexity while making the experience simpler and more enjoyable for golfers.

Golf Genius enhances the golfing experience beyond everyday golf. Our technology complements what your club already uses and integrates seamlessly.

The result? A more connected club environment — where competitions run smoothly, players feel more engaged, and the focus remains where it should be: enjoying the game of golf.

“I fell in love with the game at eightyears-old and have been connected to the industry ever since. I started my PGA apprenticeship at 18 and graduated in 1999 at 21-years-ofage. Since then, I’ve managed to maintain a handicap of +3 and played on tour for several years.

“I love the challenge that golf presents, the opportunity it gives you to travel and meet new people – I’ve met some lifelong friends through golf. I’m fortunate to have forged a career in the game and get to help other golf professionals globally by assisting and enhancing how they deliver events, run their venues, and deliver coaching services.”

GMA Webinar series continues with Payday Super update

Our monthly GMA webinar series continued on 10th March with an important and timely presentation from Hostplus.

Michelle Harris provided an overview of the upcoming Payday Super changes and what they mean for employers.

If you were unable to attend the live session, the HostPlus video is available on the webinar resource page on the GMA website.

Big changes are coming to the way super is paid in Australia. From 1st July 2026, employers will be required to pay superannuation at the same time as employees’ salary and wages under the new

Payday Super legislation. These reforms are designed to reduce unpaid and underpaid super by aligning Superannuation Guarantee payments with standard payroll cycles rather than the current quarterly system.

Under the new requirements, super contributions, along with the information needed to allocate those contributions, must reach employees’ super funds within seven business days of payday. While this may seem like a small administrative change, it will have a significant impact on payroll processes, cash flow management and internal systems for many clubs.

The session focused not only on what the changes are but also on what employers should be doing now to prepare. This

includes reviewing payroll systems, speaking with payroll providers, ensuring employee data is up to date and understanding the new timeframes to avoid penalties and ensure compliance.

The GMA webinar series continues to provide members with relevant and practical education on the topics that matter to clubs and managers. We encourage members to continue to watch LIVE webinars to recieve their CDP points.

Our next member webinar is being held on Tuesday, 28th April on the topic of "5 Week Pay".

Information on upcoming and past webinar details are available on the GMA website: www.golfmanagement.com.au/membereducation/gma-webinars/

Three ways to strengthen your payroll foundations for Payday Super

With 1 July 2026 just around the corner, the move to Payday Super is nearly here. From this date, employers will be required to pay superannuation at the same time as salary and wages, rather than monthly or quarterly.

Under Payday Super, employers will have seven business days from each payday for employees’ superannuation contributions to be received by their nominated super fund.

This represents one of the most significant reforms to employer super obligations in decades. It’s crucial for employers to start tightening payroll foundations now to help make the transition easier. Here are three practical ways to prepare.

1. RESOLVE DATA ISSUES NOW

Incorrect employee details, mismatched records and outdated information are some of the most common reasons super contributions are rejected during processing. Fixing these issues early means there’ll be fewer delays once super payments align with pay cycles. Here are some tips:

» Review and correct any error messages and warnings you receive from super funds when processing your super payments.

» Ensure all employee superannuation details collected during onboarding are accurate and complete, and confirm that all mandatory fields are correctly filled in. This is especially important for older records that may not meet current data standards.

2. REVIEW YOUR CASH FLOW

If your business doesn’t currently pay superannuation contributions at the same time as wages, it’s a good idea to assess how Payday Super will affect your cashflow. You might need to review your budgeting processes, update your cashflow forecasts, and plan how your business will manage more frequent superannuation contribution payments.

3. MAP YOUR PAYROLL WORKFLOW

Problems can sometimes arise in the handover between HR and finance, such as start dates not being updated, employees being set up inconsistently, or super fund details not being shared correctly. A quick

audit of who does what (and when) can prevent mismatches once the payment cycle tightens. It’s also a good idea to set up a process to quickly correct any errors with your super contributions so you can still meet the seven-day timeframe.

Thermal Scans and Test & Tag

With well publicised recent fire incidents, golf clubs should be under no illusion that fire represents a very real, catastrophic risk exposure. There have been multiple, significant fires in clubhouses, pro-shops, golf car storage and maintenance sheds over the past two years.

Electrical fault is a major cause of fires. Thermal scans and Test & Tag provide inexpensive, highly available, low interruption methods of mitigating this risk. However, these tests must be performed annually.

In a recent audit conducted by Victor Insurance, only 40% of golf clubs were shown to perform these tests annually. This is a very poor result. The industry should be looking for greater than 90%.

Prevention is so much better than cure. These tests are highly effective at identifying risks before they

develop into a fire event. The size of your club is irrelevant; these tests apply equally to all clubs. If you haven’t already done so, make sure you include these tests in your annual maintenance plan. Book the services of a licensed provider (electrician) in advance. Be sure to test all electrical circuits and appliances, not just the clubhouse.

Victor Insurance will continue to monitor the implementation of these tests. We will be working with insurance brokers over the next 12 months to help improve this aspect of reducing risk across the whole industry.

Victor Insurance has helped several golf clubs in recent years ensure they have a healthy future after fire loss. However, after meeting with those who have been through the experience of fire damage, it is certain that nobody enjoyed it and no one wants to repeat it. Thermal scans and Test & Tag testing are critical in your effort to avoid such experiences.

Future Golf unveils next phase of innovation with new member-focused initiatives

Future Golf continues to evolve with the rollout of several powerful new initiatives, designed to create a more seamless, connected and value-driven experience for both its growing community of 50,000+ members and partner clubs.

At the heart of these updates is the integration of Tee Time Bookings in-app — a significant step forward in simplifying how members access and book golf. By connecting directly with club systems, Future Golf is removing friction from the booking process, unlocking real-time availability and creating a smoother, more efficient pathway from app to tee.

Building on this, Future Golf has also recently introduced Return Green Fee booking functionality within the app. This enhancement provides clubs with a new, high-intent distribution channel to generate incremental revenue, while also

enabling last-minute bookings to fill gaps in tee sheets and better optimise yield. By dynamically matching available inventory with Future Golf’s engaged member base of 50,000+ golfers, clubs can maximise utilisation without compromising their core operations.

For members, this means greater access to premium tee times and exclusive playing opportunities — particularly at short notice — creating a more flexible and rewarding playing experience.

Complementing these access improvements is the introduction of in-app live scoring, bringing a new level of engagement to the playing experience. Members can now track their rounds in real time, adding a layer of interactivity and connection that extends beyond the course. Whether it’s friendly competition or personal performance tracking, live scoring enhances how members experience the game.

Together, these enhancements represent more than just feature upgrades — they reflect Future Golf’s ongoing commitment to innovation, accessibility and partner alignment. By leveraging technology and a rapidly growing membership base, Future Golf is helping clubs unlock new revenue opportunities while delivering more dynamic and meaningful experiences for golfers.

As the platform evolves, one thing remains clear: the focus is firmly on creating better outcomes for partners and more value for members. And with these latest developments, the Future Golf experience has never been more powerful.

If you want to discuss how we can enhance a current partnership or create a new one contact us at partnerships@futuregolf.com. au or come see us at the 2026 GMA/ASTMA Conference & Trade Exhibition.

US Masters and the process behind the scenes

Masters Week! What a great week it is too. You get up early and sit back to watch the beauty and drama unfold.

But, according to those who’ve been to it, there’s nothing like being in the parallel universe that is Augusta National with its unique atmosphere and exceptional service, confiscated phones, hilly course, and $1.50 egg salad sandwiches.

In February last year, at the CMAA world conference in Tampa, Jim James CCM, chief club and hospitality officer at Augusta National, gave a presentation to the global symposium. After 30 years of amazing service at the club, Jim was soon to retire and he shared his thoughts on place, people and process.

Place: encapsulates things like the appearance of the club, and the impact of unrepaired equipment, a door needing painting, a bin overflowing, or a meal poorly presented. The condition of the front door of your club will give an indication of whether it is well managed of not.

People: refers to a caring culture of vitality and learning with thriving and happy team members.

Process: refers to the standards, policies and procedures that create outstanding member service. Jim suggests that process accounts for over 70% of service delivery systems.

Perhaps the best example of process is at Berckmans Place during a busy Masters week.

Berckmans Place is Augusta National’s ultra-premium hospitality enclave. Located just outside the grounds of the club, it was opened in 2013 to bring premium corporate entertaining in-house. It has a private entry directly onto the course near the 5th hole. Like the “Life changer!” that was Adam Scott’s win that year, it really changed the way catering was delivered at The Masters. It became the most exclusive hospitality experience in global sport.

Jim explained it has seven restaurants with 1,800 seats and serves 15,000 a-la-carte covers over the event. All meal timings are tracked with an average ticket time of five

and a half minutes. But think about this –these are meals delivered at breakneck speed for one week a year by people that weren’t even there last week and will be gone next week.

How is this done? They do it through scale, training and process. Around 3,000 staff are brought in and given just one or two days of training before the week begins. Given the sheer demand, food service is set up almost like a production line, with systems designed to keep quality high while moving quickly.

Where a task requires genuine skill, they treat it differently. Oyster shucking was Jim James’s example. He spoke about flying to cities known for their oysters to watch the fastest shuckers at work, then inviting the best of them to Augusta for the week. The top operators can shuck a dozen oysters in 52 seconds and may get through as many as 1,700 in a day.

The point was simple: at that level, everything comes back to process.

The Augusta National Training Manual has the following: “ It is only when we pay attention to every single detail, that we’ll exceed member expectations, and only then will they give you credit for providing exceptional service.”
