OBetter Then Ever Rutgers Golf Course..RU
ne of the oldest, and best, golf courses in New Jersey is, and not coincidentally, the home course of THE state university of New Jersey, Rutgers University.
Around 6,300 yards in length, Rutgers’ PGA sanctioned, and historic, golf course, located on the picturesque Busch Campus in Piscataway, is a Par 71 which offers players of all abilities and levels of knowledge a challenging, but fair, and memorable and enjoyable day on the Links.
A traditional tree-lined Parkland style golf course, Rutgers was first founded way back in 1894 when four men and four women got together and organized The New Brunswick Golf Club. Built in the decade(1890s) of the first explosion of Golf in the United States, Rutgers University Golf Club was among the first member clubs of The United States Golf Association, headquartered now in nearby Short Hills, NJ.
As The New Brunswick Golf Club, Rutgers’ first course consisted of just
six holes laid out on rented land east of Livingston Avenue between Delavan and Lawrence Street and extending to Remsen Avenue. Then, in 1897, a 9-Hole, 2,396yard course was constructed on property leased from George W. Metlar in Piscataway. As was the Custom of its time, holes on the new Piscataway course bore names like Valley, Pie Crust, Carry-All and Goblet. Serving as the Clubhouse was Ross Hall, built by Edward Antill in 1740 which, during The Revolution housed General George
Washington and his staff.
With over 250 members, the club was prosperous enough in 1912 to purchase 118 acres further out on River Road. In 1933, however, The Depression led to the bankruptcy of the club, which was purchased in 1935 by Rutgers for $15,000. A new era was launched in 1961 with the construction of an 18-hole course. Expertly designed by Hal Purdy, a noted golf architect, the course was officially opened May 29,1963. Highlights include narrow fairways, slick putting surfaces and water on seven of its holes. The course is located near points of interest which include The Waksman Institute, Rutgers Medical School and multiple athletic facilities like SHI Stadium, home of the Big 10 contending Scarlet Knights football team.
Open to the public, tee times start at 7 am weekdays and 6 am on weekends during the season from around March 1 to December 15.
The mission of the course is to ensure
that every player enjoys a timely round of golf played on superior fairways and true greens with uncompromising service and instruction.
Reasonably priced, and with special reduced rates for Rutgers University students and staff, the course offers a terrific opportunity for Scarlet Knights, present, and even past, a terrific opportunity to learn, hone and grow the Game.
“A lot of students don’t know they can play the course, but they can,” said Rutgers University Golf Course’s PGA Pro/ Manager Lisa Jensen.
“It’s a very walkable course with four teeing stations per hole giving everyone, from a low handicapper to a beginner, terrific opportunities to play the game and enjoy playing it.”
Jensen’s favorite hole, she said, is Hole No.16, a Par 4 with fine views of the Busch Campus, SHI Stadium and the world-famous Waksman Institute.
“Sixteen is just a quality, scenic, hole that’s just a lot of fun to play,” Jensen said. “ The whole course, to be honest, is like that. Every hole has something to look at. The History of the Course, and the
university, as well, gives us at Rutgers something that almost no other course, public especially, in the state has. It’s just a great place to work and play.”

The course is highlighted by many “Risk-Reward” holes giving long hitters, and low handicappers, some exciting opportunities to card eagles and birdies while giving all other players plenty of good chances to chip in or putt for pars.
LBI’s first hole is one such hole. A downhill, slight dog-leg right Par 5,
No.1 plays for a high draw over the trees or a low, penetrating, left-to-right fade around the corner playing downhill to a series of bunkers about 200 yards out.
Hole No.3, playing only about 300 yards, is another great driving hole requiring a slight draw downhill to a tricky two-tiered green with a False Front, dipping down into a fairway bowl about 20-30 yards short of the putting surface from where players can chip, or pitch, and even putt, for eagle,
or set up a look at birdie or make par.
One of my favorite holes is the Par 3 No. 7 hole. Played over water and marsh, which originally began as a massive sand waste area, The Seventh plays for a mid-iron to hybrid for most players and a long putting surface with a small valley right smack in its center.
The Back Nine boasts several more exciting holes, as well, but the most memorable of them is, undoubtedly, the long, and winding Par 5 No. 16th. The
Course’s Signature Hole, 16 demands a fading tee shot to a blind fairway landing area titling right to left. If you can somehow manage to turn the corner and keep from rolling left into a 150yard, or so, sandy waste area you might find yourself with a chance to go for the green in two from about 200 yards over water to a peninsular putting surface pitching right to left with planet of slope. The prudent play, however, is to hit a second shot right, and down to, or past, the corner of the fairway, around the sand, and safely distant from the water, to set up a 100-yard wedge to make birdie and par more possible.
It’s one of the very best Par Fives I’ve ever played, and one, I think, anyone will really enjoy.
And that goes for the whole entire course, as well. It’s just a lot of fun. I’ve played LBI National over 300 times, probably, and I never get tired of it. You’re sure to enjoy it, also.

How to Spend a Perfect Day at Wild Dunes Resort

Coastal Carolina’s intoxicating destination has surprises around every corner.
An ideal golf day at Wild Dunes Resort near Charleston, S.C. starts out easy. Whether you’re staying at the quaint Boardwalk Inn or the brand-new Sweetgrass Inn, grab a coffee in the lobby and wander out back to the beach. Absorb the sunrise, get grounded, and relax for what’s next. Just steps from either hotel is the Harbor course. And since you’re about to hit the first tee there, check in at the pro shop then walk literally to the other side of the wall and grab a freshly made omelette at Woody’s Eatery. You’ll want some fuel so you can fully enjoy one of Tom Fazio’s first-ever course designs.
that roll true, and even a reachable par-4 on the back nine. Also on the back nine, you’ll soak in expansive views of the awe-inspiring Intracoastal Waterway.
Harbor, yet with some of the familiarity. It features a surprising amount of elevation change. The course showcases the raw beauty of the Lowcountry coastline. You play through preserved, natural dunes and salt marshes on the back nine. Its finishing stretch immerses in drama as you move closer to the ocean, culminating in the final three holes playing directly alongside the Atlantic. Breezes are a constant factor. There are few penal areas, the fairways are wide and playable, and you can see everything in front of you. The only visual distractions are the ocean views near the closing holes.
Perpetually in pristine condition, the Harbor is serene and gorgeous. It’s relatively flat, and there’s a great mixture of holes. The first few holes are fairly narrow, but then the forgiving, player-friendly style Fazio has come to be known for kicks in. The holes seem to open up with wide fairways, greens
After 18, walk back to your hotel and grab a delicious thin-crust pizza at Coastal Crust. It’s on the Plaza walkway right between the two hotels. You can also take a 20-minute bike ride around the island with a rental bike. There’s nothing like gorgeous scenery and a breeze in your face.

The New Jersey Section of the PGA of America (NJPGA) today announced its 2026 annual award recipients, led by Kevin Beirne, Vice President, Spirit Golf Management, a Division of The Sports Facilities Companies, who was named 2026 NJPGA Golf Professional of the Year, the highest honor for a PGA of America Golf Professional within the Section.
A member of the New Jersey PGA Section since 1999, Kevin Beirne is an accomplished and highly respected PGA of America Golf Professional. His passion for growing junior golf and elevating player development programming has made a lasting impact throughout the state, earning him multiple NJPGA Player Development Awards.
A dedicated advocate for the next generation of PGA Professionals, Beirne received the 2024 NJPGA Bill Strausbaugh Award, presented annually to a member who demonstrates exceptional character, integrity, leadership, and a commitment to mentoring fellow PGA of America Golf Professionals. Committed to serving both his peers and the game of golf, Beirne has volunteered extensively throughout his career, serving as a longtime Board Member and Section Officer, and currently as President of the New Jersey PGA Section.

Enjoy The Experience Morris County Parks Golf Courses

New Jersey has some of the very best County Parks golf courses around, and the courses of Morris County are among the Garden State’s very, very best. Morris County can boast of four distinct, and terrific, properties, consisting of five very unique, well-maintained, fine and friendly tracks all within about a half hour’s drive from one another, Pinch Brook, Sunset Valley, Flanders Valley and Berkshire Valley.
An executive style 18-hole golf course, Pinch Brook Golf Course in Florham Park, which consists of nine Par 3s, is not short on challenges and is designed by world-renowned firm, Rees Jones Inc. An executive style course, measuring just about 5,000 yards, Pinch Brook has the advantage for players who want to get on and off in less time than the championship-length courses. However, this shorter course is not short on challenges.
This 18 hole, par 65, course gained three
and a half stars from Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play,” and “Top 100 Must Play Courses” by Golf Styles magazine. Water hazards enhance the majority of holes, and elevated, undulating greens are sure to test the skill of the most seasoned golfer.
The 190-yard, par 3 sixth hole forces
players to hit around a pond, mainly because it is shaped like the state of New Jersey.
“The par 3 sixth hole is the most difficult of the nine par 3’s on the golf course,” said Morris County’s Regional Golf Manager, Eric Thompson”. Featured by a lake on the left side of the hole which resembles the shape of New Jersey and an undulating green makes par an excellent score.
“Pinch Brook is very popular with our juniors, seniors and ladies, but is a fun and challenging golf course for everyone. All 9 par threes are decently long. None of them are “short”, like at a pitchand-putt. And the course conditions are top-quality, too.”
Another fun-to-play, and well-maintained, Morris County golf course is Sunset Valley Golf Course. Sunset Valley, located in Pompton Plains, is regarded as one of the premier golf courses in New Jersey.
It is consistently rated among the best Public Courses in New Jersey with four stars from Golf Digest’s “Best Place to Play,” and one of the “Top 100 Must Play Courses” by Golf Styles, and recipient of “Top Women-Friendly Courses Award” by Golf for Women magazine
Sunset Valley, designed by Hal C. Purdy, has a challenging design and fast greens. The course comprises of 18 holes, is a par 70, and measures about 6,483-yards. Sunset Valley boasts of perhaps the best three finishing holes in the state, according to many golf enthusiasts. The 16th through 18th holes each present a challenge to even the low-handicap and expert golfer. The 16th is a 555-yard, par-5 that goes uphill. The 17th and 18th holes are both Par 4s and go from about 420 to 430 yards each.
“The 18th hole at Sunset Valley is iconic,” Thompson explained. “ This long dogleg left par 4 presents a challenge off the
tee as you have a pond on your left and trees and water on the right. The uphill approach shot to a two tiered green will also test the skill in your iron game. And finally if you leave your approach shot on the wrong side of the green, it will be a challenge to two-putt.”
Nestled in the picturesque Morris County countryside, Flanders Valley Golf Course offers another highly-rated golfing experience on two 18-hole championship courses, The Red and the Gold and the Blue and the White. Acclaimed as one of the premier public golf destinations in the United States and New Jersey, Flanders’ scenic 409-acre facility combines challenging designs with beautiful landscapes, making it a favorite among golf enthusiasts nationwide.
One of my many favorite parts of Flanders’ is the challenging opening two holes of The Gold Nine. The first, a straight
up-the-hill par 5, is a monster, but also a good Par opportunity, and even a Bridie chance. The medium-sized, Par 3 Second Hole, measuring about 150 yards to about 170, plays from a slightly elevated tee complex to a large multi-tiered putting surface.
The Gold’s signature is a slight dog leg left 379 yard Par 4 that demands a perfectly placed, precision-off-the-tee drive. There is a pond on the left which is very much in play staring at you from the tee box. Missing right will have you in the trees as the rolling hills slope away from the narrow fairway.
The 7th Hole is a golfer’s dream. A Par 5, the tee shot calls for a ball down the left side if you want to get to the green in two. Missing too far right with force you to lay up because of the trees that creep into the fairway.
The 4th Hole is a sweeping 550 yard dogleg left which goes up a significant slope. The ideal landing area is about 220

yards from the tee box. From there, you are looking at 70ft of elevation change to the green.
The Gold-to-Red course is much different than the other 18. Tipping out at 6,780, every tee shot will have you seeing an elevation change, which makes things interesting when choosing the correct club. Your approach shot will rarely leave you with a flat lie, so adjust accordingly.
The Red Nine, meanwhile, is more flat than the Gold, but what makes this nine difficult is the lack of trees. Some might think that is a good thing, however the wind tends to increase over the duration of your round. Your toughest test will be the 16th hole, a 478 yard-Par 4 with a very slight dog leg right, and will demand your best tee shot of the day. A truly great golf hole!
“The 9th hole on the Gold course is a
sweeping hole that moves from right to left with a pond located short left of the green,” said Thompson. “ It’s a classic risk-reward golf hole that gives up plenty of birdies, but also plenty of balls in the water.”
Flanders Valley’s Blue-to-White, or as the regulars will call it, the “Inner18”, is a tree-lined, traditional golf course playing at a Par 72 and tipping out at 6,765 yards. The Blue and the White calls for all types of shots and can be fairly difficult depending on the pin locations.
“Flanders has a little bit of everything for very type of golfer,” said Thompson. “ Many of our area high schools play there, and County College of Morris, too.
“The course is always well-maintained and is a favorite course of our county golfers, and visitors, as well.”
Berkshire Valley Golf Course, in Oak Ridge, New Jersey, in Jefferson, is a true destination course with beautiful, picturesque mountain views. “Berkshire is something really, really special. You almost can’t believe you’re in New Jersey. You kind of feel like you left the state when you play it/”

Golfing a Round at The Brigantine Links

Links Golf is a very special kind of Golf. Golfing a round at The Brigantine Golf Links is, quite simply, one of the very best and most enjoyable, and authentic, rounds of links-style golf that you, me, or anybody will ever get to play anywhere, and it’s right here right at The Jersey Shore.
Built in 1927 as part of the island’s master plan, The Brigantine Golf Links is unique in the Northeast with its Scottish links design by Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek. Brigantine’s history is intertwined with the famed Scottish links courses of old. Local legend suggests that “Old Pros” from the 1920s practiced at Brigantine before sailing for the British Open.

less terrain. With prevailing sea breezes and carefully placed concave bunkers, this 18-hole, par-72 course provides an exciting and ever-changing experience for golfers of all skill levels.
You have to contend with the wind on a links course. Even a slight breeze will demand playing low drives and golfing some creatively imagined Scottish-style bumps and runs along the ground with precision chipping and a deft touch with the putter.
One of the many things about Brigantine I like a lot is its First and Eighteenth holes. Both reachable Par fives, 1 and 18 gives good golfers great chances to begin and close with birdies while giving all other players possible putts for par. Playing a touch longer than 450 yards, Brigantine’s No.1, opening the Hagen Nine named for golfing great and World Golf Hall of Famer Walter Hagen, calls for a straight or slightly fading drive short of a tidal creek that crosses the fairway leaving a shot of about 200 yards to the green. 18, capping the Back Nine named for British golfing giant and Hall of Famer Harry Vardon, meanwhile, plays straight uphill and back towards the clubhouse with water down the right to an
elevated green.
Hole No.10 is another nice hole. A narrow Par 5, with water down the right and OB down the left, Hole 10 rewards the good golfer with a decent chance at eagle and birdie.
Hole 15, a Par 3, is maybe Brigantine’s Signature Hole. Framed front and left by a pool and creek, hitting the long and narrow green with a long iron to hybrid or fairway wood in one is a victory in itself. I love 15, but I love just about every hole at Brigantine. I really do. Like a great record with great songs from Start to Finish, The Brigantine Golf Links is a terrific track that I cannot wait to play any time and any day I can. You will love it, too.
As of 2026, the City of Brigantine has assumed direct management of Brigantine Golf Links and has embarked on an ambitious long-range improvement program designed to enhance the course while preserving its unique links-style character. The City has retained renowned golf course architect Joel Weiman of Weiman Golf Design to develop a comprehensive master plan and long-term golf course improvement strategy. Planned enhancements include a complete tee renovation program
and bunker restoration project aimed at improving playability, aesthetics, and course conditions.
Recent capital improvements have already transformed the facility, including the installation of a new irrigation system and extensive cart path renovations throughout the property. Looking ahead, the City is committed to continuing investment in this treasured community asset, with construction of a brand-new clubhouse scheduled to begin in the Fall of 2026.
With these improvements underway, Brigantine Golf Links is poised to become one of the premier public golf destinations along the Jersey Shore while remaining a cherished amenity for residents and visitors alike.

We recently had the opportunity to visit Woodloch Legacy Resort Collection in Hawley, Pennsylvania. This three-resort destination, nestled in the scenic Pocono Mountains, is an easy 2 ½-hour drive from central CT and central New Jersey, and 90 miles from New York City. Originally founded in 1958 on just a few acres, the resort has grown significantly over the decades and remains in the hands of the Kiesendahl family, who have preserved its emphasis on family values and personalized service.
Woodloch Legacy Resort Collection, often referred to specifically by its family-focused segment, The Pines at Woodloch, is a family-friendly, all-inclusive resort where virtually every aspect of your stay — from comfortable accommodations and hearty meals to an extensive schedule of daily activities — is included in a comprehensive package. Families
can choose from a range of lodging options, including standard hotel rooms, spacious suites, and even larger vacation-style houses available both on the main property and nearby. Many of these accommodations overlook the resort›s beautiful lake or wooded surroundings, offering a peaceful backdrop to your Pocono getaway.

One of the most memorable
aspects of the golf course is its signature 14th hole, a challenging 220-yard carry over «Hell›s Gate Gorge,» where golfers must navigate a dramatic ravine carved by water hundreds of feet below. This and other strategically designed holes appeal to golfers of all skill levels, with four sets of tees and varied pin placements offering flexibility for both novices and seasoned players.
Beyond the course itself, The Springs at Woodloch emphasizes skill development and year-round play. A 16-acre practice facility and a state-of-the-art indoor performance simulator support instruction, improvement, and club fittings regardless of the weather.
The clubhouse at The Springs serves as a social and dining hub. Golfers and guests can relax with meals and drinks before or after rounds, and food-andbeverage service is offered both at the clubhouse and on-course during peak season.
