Portugal Invitational: The first European edition of the PGA TOUR Champions in Vilamoura

PGA TOUR Champions will arrive in Europe for the very first time with the inaugural Portugal Invitational, taking place at The Els Club Vilamoura from 31 July to 2 August 2026

The event marks Portugal’s first-ever PGA TOUR-sanctioned individual stroke-play tournament and represents a landmark moment for both Portuguese golf and the international expansion of PGA TOUR Champions. With a prize purse of $3 million, a field of 78 players will compete on the new course designed by four-time major champion Ernie Els, in Vilamoura, one of Europe’s most sought-after golf destinations.

Among the first confirmed names are World Golf Hall of Famers Ernie Els and Colin Montgomerie, joined by Ryder Cup legends such as Darren Clarke and Miguel Ángel Jiménez. American players Stewart Cink and Justin Leonard have also confirmed their participation.

The latest names announced further elevate the field, with major champions Bernhard Langer and José María Olazábal joining alongside Retief Goosen, David Duval, Pádraig

Harrington, Thomas Bjørn and Ángel Cabrera, creating one of the strongest senior fields ever assembled in Portugal.

Tickets are now available, with early bird sales running until 1 June. General admission tickets (Friday 31 July to Sunday 2 August) start from €20, while a three-day pass, valid from Friday to Sunday, is available from €50. Children aged 16 and under are admitted free of charge, with one child permitted per ticketed adult.

30 Years Later:

The Open de Portugal returns to the renovated courses of

PGA Aroeira Lisboa

The 64th edition of the Open de Portugal will take place from 17th to 20th September, marking a significant and symbolic return to PGA Aroeira Lisboa after thirty years and reaffirming the venue’s historic connection with one of Portugal’s most prestigious professional golf tournaments.

Established in 1953, the Open de Portugal is widely regarded as one of the country’s most important professional golf events and one of the oldest in European golf. It was part of the inaugural European Tour schedule in 1972, remained on the main tour until 2010, and is now integrated into the HotelPlanner Tour (formerly Challenge Tour), continuing to stand as the flagship event on the calendar of the Portuguese Golf Federation.

With a prize fund of €300,000, the tournament will once again attract many of the leading European and Portuguese players,

reinforcing its position as a key moment in the international golfing calendar. The most recent edition brought together more than 150 players from across the world, highlighting both the competitive level and international relevance of the event.

Terras da Comporta achieves history in new golf course ranking

The Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta is celebrating a new first after completing a historic clean sweep of leading honours on its way to being named as the number one golf course in Portugal by users of a respected industry website for the third consecutive year.

The acclaimed par-71 layout near Lisbon – architect David McLay-Kidd’s first golf design project in mainland Europe – was the unanimous first choice among golfers in Leading Courses’ updated ‘Golfers’ Choice Awards 2026’, not only being voted as the best layout in Portugal but also rising up to seventh in the updated course rankings for Continental Europe.

Determined by reviews given by the Leading Courses community, each course was assessed across a range of categories including design, maintenance, hospitality, clubhouse, surroundings and value for money, with The Dunas Course finishing top in each for Portugal.

Owned by Vanguard Properties, Portugal’s largest real estate developer, The Dunas Course was the first of two 18-hole championship courses to launch at Terras da Comporta with the second, The Torre Course, officially inaugurated last October.

The award adds to the growing list of honours bestowed on the course since it opened in October 2023, with recent accolades including being named as Europe’s Best Golf Course at the 2025 World Golf Awards and being ranked as Portugal’s new number one in Top100GolfCourses.com website’s updated list of Portugal’s Top 50 Courses.

Respect for the traditions of golf and the natural environment were the inspiration behind the layout of the Espiche Golf course in Lagos, Algarve, and the result has been one that offers a true challenge for golfers of all levels

Set within unspoilt undulating countryside, the greens and fairways of Espiche Golf course have been carefully placed to balance the dual demands of the golfer and the environment, with indigenous planting throughout creating a beautiful backdrop and some challenging obstacles.

The golf course requires careful thought along the 5862 metres (6411) yards from the back tees and requires a deft touch on the short game. Bunkers guard most greens while the greens themselves are large and undulating, demanding a soft hand with the putter. Espiche Golf course in Lagos is a shotmaker’s course, where each hole poses a new challenge thanks to the variety of the layout. The par five 1st, dropping some 80 feet from the tee before rising back to the same height at the green, gives golfers an insight into the style of golf at Espiche Golf course. The 3rd

provides the sternest test on the front nine at 409 meters uphill all the way, before the short 7th and 8th offer birdie opportunities.

The par five 10th is one of the finest in all the Algarve golf courses, and challenges golfers to negotiate the progressively tighter fairway as they approach the green.

The three founding members were visionary entrepreneurs who visited the Algarve over 20 years ago to look at investment opportunities.

When they saw the site at Bago de Uva they

They took their concept to South African golf course architect Peter Sauerman who designed the course and with the backing and support of a small group of investors and a devoted handful of builders, their lovingly built and landscaped the design to sympathetically integrate into the surrounding scenery. The first 18 hole course of its kind to be built in the Algarve, the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course started a golfing movement that is, today, famous the world over. Designed and completed in 1966 by the great Sir Henry Cotton, the course stands as a shining example to golfing architecture and one man’s passion for the great game of golf.

Whether the former championship golfer had any inkling of the mark he was laying down when he first began implementing his vision upon the Algarve paddy fields from which his course sprung, we don’t know... what we do know is the staggering extent of the legacy that he created.

A Stunning Transformation in the Southern Algarve

First he introduced thousands of trees and shrubs, completely transforming the landscape into a vegetation rich, lush land, perfect for playing the game of golf. From this initial build, there quickly sprang another 30 courses across the region... with plenty more to come. As the towering pines and eucalyptus trees reached maturity, the course was given a definitive character that remains unmatched across the entire penipnsular of the Algarve.

Sir Henry Cotton: The Man Behind the Vision Sir Henry Cotton was a three times British Open Champion, even winning the competition with an extraordinary 65 in 1934 - which resulted in Dunlop honouring him with his own ball... the ‘65’. Most at home in the Algarve, with the great all year round climate - particularly during Autumn and Winter when many of the UK courses were slightly inclement to say the least, Sir Henry was determined to follow his vision of creating a world of year-round golf... and golfers the world over are mighty pleased that he did.

The Course Today

A major revitalisation project has recently completely transformed both the hotel and the golf course. Prestigious events such as the Daily Telegraph Seniors’ Match Play event (2001), the National Finals of the Audi Corp, together with major international and charity competitions - such as the Sir Henry Cotton Charity Classic - together with the Portuguese Open (1998 / 1999/ 2000 / 2004 / 2006) have all been hosted at the course.

Unusual Characteristics of a World Famous Course

The course itself is characterised by an unusual grouping of Par 5s, with four

of the five arranged together in pairs in the beginning and end of the back nineproducing a Par 38 as opposed to 35. As you turn home towards the 18th, the magnificent building of the hotel acts as a backdrop to the green and is framed by an amphitheatre of trees - a superb spectator setting. Drive short of the drainage ditch, position the second shot to avoid the bunkers guarding the putting surface... and take into account the pin position on one of the three tiers - and you could well finish with a highly commendable par.

Of the Par 3s, the most memorable is the 13th - voted one of the best 500 holes in the world. A lake borders the right-hand side, coming into play off the back tee, whilst the sloping green is guarded to the front and left by a pair of dangerous bunkers... great fun and a great challenge.

MORGADO GOLF COURSE

Tucked into a valley between Portimão and Monchique, Morgado sits in a part of the Algarve most visitors never see. No coastline, no crowds. Just cork oaks, carob trees, and 18 holes of properly engaging parkland golf.

The course plays as a par 73, with wide fairways that invite an aggressive game off the tee. Scottish-inspired bunkering keeps things honest throughout, rewarding accuracy without punishing the uninitiated. It is a layout that works for all levels, without feeling easy to any of them.

The links influence is deliberate. Flat, open fairways echo the form of coastal golf, but the setting is entirely its own. Quiet, green, and unhurried, Morgado offers a round that feels a long way from the familiar resort circuit of the coast.

ÁLAMOS GOLF COURSE

Álamos plays shorter than its neighbour Morgado, but do not let the par 71 fool you. This is a course that earns its respect through precision rather than length, with a layout that demands thought from the first tee to the last green.

The setting does a lot of the talking. The Serra de Monchique rises in the distance, the estate’s own reservoir sits below, and lakes and farmland spread out between. It is a view that stops people mid-round, which is either a distraction or a reward depending on how the scorecard is going. On site you will also find a driving range, putting green, pro shop, golf academy and clubhouse. Everything you need, without having to go anywhere else.

AMENDOEIRA O’CONNOR JNR. COURSE

Designed by Christy O’Connor Jnr., this course complements the neighbouring Faldo Course and also takes full advantage of being situated in a fertile valley.

Its various water features, both lakes and watercourses that are spread throughout the entire course, demand accuracy and test from all golfers, and the rich topsoil has been skillfully landscaped and planted with mature palm trees, affording a lush, ornamental setting like an extensive oasis.

This course has tees that are generally connected to the fairways, but its greater overall distance, the water hazards and big greens provide its challenge. Golfers must also be prepared to read the subtly contoured putting surfaces that are strong features.

Pinhal Vilamoura opened in 1976 and has since earned its reputation as one of the most beautiful and challenging courses in the Algarve. Designed originally by Frank Pennink, who also worked on the nearby Old Course, and refined by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1985, it combines undulating parkland with a distinctive challenge. OMBRIA ALGARVE

Although firmly established as one of the world’s most popular golf destinations, the Algarve is still staying ahead of the game. Leading by example, particularly when it comes to sustainability, is Ombria Algarve, a new golf destination only 25 minutes from Faro Airport. Over the years, golf courses have continued to grow and evolve. Whilst in the past architects may have prioritised a challenging game, we are now seeing a new generation of golf courses that consider sustainability as essential, rather than as a marketing tool.

One such course is Ombria Algarve, the new luxury 5-star golf resort in the Algarve. From the very beginning, the project has integrated eco-friendly features into its design, delicately interweaving a golf course into the surrounding natural environment. Key design considerations addressed by Ombria included minimal turf grass surface areas, restoration and integration of the native river habitats, conservation of the surrounding woodlands and installation of highly efficient irrigation and pumping systems designed to cope with the steep terrain.

As a result, the course was recognised with a GEO Foundation certification, the international benchmark of an ecoresponsible golf course, demanding the highest standards of sustainability across six key areas: nature, water, energy, supply chain, pollution control and community.

designing a course that offers stunning views but also provides an exciting challenge.” And that exciting challenge is almost guaranteed. Ombria’s 18-hole golf course is a 5,800-metre, par 71 layout, boasting two 9-hole loops that integrate the course’s natural landscapes into the playing experience.

The front nine is laid at the base of two untouched landscape banks with a “wall-towall” design and well-defined grass limits that change organically throughout the seasons. Magnificent holm trees, preserved inside the playing areas, are an integral part of the course strategy simultaneously providing hazards during play.

The #1 tee welcomes players with stunning views down the valley. This short par 5 offers a comfortable tee shot for all levels of golfer.

Arguably the biggest challenge, however, is the #2 hole. With a length of 518 metres and a slight double dog-leg, it invites players to take a gamble across the stream several times - with an ancient old rock formation blocking the view of the approach shot. The front nine loop ends with a true championship par 4, sandwiched between a lake on the left and a stream on the right, rewarding players with breathtaking views of the surrounding nature. In contrast, the back nine holes play out over a wider canvas. The #10 hole fairway is framed by two holm trees and is free of bunkers in the landing area, which should provide a comfortable start to the back nine loop. Moving along the remaining holes of the back nine, golfers can expect different challenges that require finesse and know-how. Afterwards, players may wish to visit the on-site clubhouse, which was built into the traditional walls of an existing ruin. QUINTA DO LAGO NORTH COURSE

Built to the highest specifications, the North Course was totally redesigned in 2014 by renowned architect Beau Welling, in conjunction with former European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley.

While many modern-day developments tend to focus on length, Welling and McGinley were keen to design a golfing experience where accuracy and course management are the key factors, and a course that is playable and fun for golfers of all abilities. All the greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation and drainage systems and cart paths have been re-built using innovative technology. Four sets of tees have been introduced on each hole to accommodate players of all levels. Golfers are challenged by a combination of undulating

greens, well-positioned bunkers and water hazards.

A low-cut Bermuda grass approach has been introduced around greens to create recovery shot options, therefore encouraging all levels of play. Through the introduction of seasonal rough grass and the planting of specimen trees, the aesthetics and environmental impact of the par-72 course has significantly improved. The renovation has allowed for water recycling, solar energy while the grassy areas will encourage new ecosystems.

Benamor Golf is a superb 18 hole Golf Course located on the South of Portugal, Algarve, just a few kilometres east of the ancient city of Tavira. In the nearby foothills of Barrocal, you will enjoy some of the best mountain and sea views the Algarve has to offer. But maybe most enjoyable of all, are the peaceful surroundings of a construction free resort. Possibly the only one on the Algarve.

The decision to build a golf course, on the land of Quinta de Benamor, in Tavira, Algarve, was made in 1986. The Owning Martins Dias family invited the late Sir Henry Cotton to make a concept design for an 18-hole course. Sir Henry Cotton was inspired by the beautiful old church next to the site of the Clubhouse and by the spectacular location.

The final result is a delightful par 71 golf course of 5,500 metres (6,100 yards), which offers a pleasant playing experience, to players of all standards. The course is undulating but not hilly. The views of the mountains to the North and the Atlantic Ocean to the South are stunning. The indigenous olive, cork, carob, fig and almond trees, many centuries old, feature aesthetically and in playing terms. Water hazards and sand bunkers are located to test the strategy and striking ability of the player.

The Penn A4 greens and tees are simply superb. The fairways of Bermuda Sahara and cool-season grasses, provide good lies for wood and iron shots.

The Benamor Golf Driving Range offers a complete practice facility on a nice and pleasant natural setting whether you are an experienced player or total beginner. It has 16 mats at front end of Driving Range and practice grass at top end with target flags and distance markers.

A Chipping and Pitching green is also located

at top end with a bunker to practice from. For players who wish to concentrate on their putting we have a lovely 9 hole Putting Green situated between Clubhouse and Driving Range.

The Benamor golf course offers several spaces for visitors. Travelling east on the motorway A22, exit at the Tavira junction 16, and follow the signs to Tavira. At the main roundabout on the EN125, take the 3rd exit towards Vila Real Stº António. The Dunas Course is one of the new stars of European golf and has wasted no time in accumulating a host of international honours since opening in 2023, including being named as ‘Europe’s Best Golf Course’ at the 2025 World Golf Awards.

Situated one hour from Lisbon in a secluded coastal setting on the edge of the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, The Dunas Course was the first of two 18-hole championship layouts to open at Terras da Comporta.

Created over 84 hectares of natural, sandy terrain by acclaimed golf architect David McLay-Kidd, the par-71 course was built using the highest sustainable practices and has quickly become one of the continent’s mustplay golfing venues.

As with so many of McLay-Kidd’s more recent creations – he admits that he had a

rethink about his design philosophy in 2009 after realising that his first courses were too hard for the average golfer – strategy and playability are the keys, especially from the tee. Lower handicappers may well prefer to take on the tiger lines which, executed properly, will leave the best chance for birdie but the architect has also been at pains to offer plenty of room on the fairways so that higher-handicap players can gain just as much pleasure and satisfaction from their course experience.

THE TORRE COURSE AT TERRAS DA COMPORTA

The second 18-hole championship course to launch at Terras da Comporta, much was expected of The Torre Course when it was unveiled to the golfing world last year and it has not disappointed. Providing the perfect complement to its older sibling, The Dunas Course, the opening of The Torre has cemented Comporta’s burgeoning reputation as Europe’s most exciting golf destination.

Created over an area of natural sandy terrain one hour south of Lisbon, The Torre Course is European legend Sergio Garcia’s first golfcourse design project where he has been given overall responsibility.

Measuring, 6,575 metres from the back tees, the par-72 layout – the first course that the Spaniard has worked on in Portugal – features a combination of risk-and-reward holes, tight fairways and small greens, with the 2017 Masters champion taking inspiration from his favourite course in the world, Valderrama. There are fewer strategic options than the other course at Terras da Comporta, The

Dunas Course, but it is still target-based and the end result is just as impressive, with Torre already having claimed a number of honours since launching including the accolade of the ‘World’s Best New Course’ at the 2025 World Golf Awards.

García said: “I want to have my own personality when it comes to designing a golf course and impose my own print on the land. I have ideas what I want to put into play, and you can see a lot of them here at Torre. Small greens, a short par-three which adds so much personality to a course and little dogleg par fours.”

QUINTA DA MARINHA

The Quinta da Marinha Golf Course, in Cascais, has 18 holes with 5.870 meters of pure nature and big challenges. This par 71, designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, offers fantastic views over the Atlantic Ocean and the Sintra Mountains.

In this course you can really see the style of Robert Trent Jones in the elevated greens and tees, with many bunkers in play and, as expected, some water hazards. Every hole is different, you will have to use all the clubs in the bag and play with strategy to make a good score. Some of the holes you won’t forget are: Hole 3, Par 4, it is one of the most famous holes of the Portuguese Golf, with view to the Atlantic Ocean, its picture was used for many years to promote “Golf in Portugal” abroad. Hole 4, Par 3, played over a natural ravine to a quite demanding Green. Hole 13, Par 3, you play over a big lake to an elevated green well protected with 4 bunkers. Hole 18, a beautiful Par 5, with two lakes, all shots have to be well

thought to make sure you are not penalized by the water.

Quinta da Marinha has been host to many high profile professional competitions, such as the Ladies Masters in 1988, won by South African player Laurette Maritz-Atkins. In 2002, the PGA Seniors Tour Championship was won by Denis Durnian after a dramatic suddendeath play-off with the former Ryder Cup star, Eamonn Darcy. And in 2007, the Challenge Tour, was won by Ross McGowan, shooting 66 to beat former Ryder Cup player Peter Baker who was leading the after round three. Located 40 minutes from Lisbon, Ribagolfe features two 18-hole courses both designed and built by European Golf Design. Set within a forest of cork oak trees the courses make full use of the sweeping undulations of the site, providing many spectacular golf holes across valleys and lakes.

Ribagolfe Lakes

Designed by former European Tour star

Peter Townsend, in collaboration with European Golf Design, Ribagolfe Lakes (former Ribagolfe I) was designed to be a championship course of the highest standard. The course is set in a beautiful natural cork oak forest and, despite its 6,700 metres length, the par-72 layout is enjoyable to walk, being slightly undulating with small valleys. With five tees per hole, it is suitable for the majority of players and offers the opportunity to score well providing you can negotiate the wide, tricky greens and avoid the well-placed bunkers and numerous water hazards, most notably on the risk-and-reward par-four 14th hole.

Ribagolfe Oaks

A shorter test than Ribagolfe Lakes but still measuring more than 6,800 yards, Ribagolfe Oaks (formerly called Ribagolfe II) was designed by former Ryder Cup player Michael King in collaboration with European Tour Design.

Blessed with the same indigenous cork oak canvas, King has crafted a more forgiving but equally appealing golf course with wider fairways and landing areas. The huge, moderately contoured greens, however, provide a stiff test if you’re to score well here. All this is in a perfect environment for golf practice, surrounded by nothing but nature where you can only hear the chirping of the birds.

Located on the beautiful, sand-fringed Troia Peninsula along the Atlantic coast, Troia Golf Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1980.

West cliffs was designed by the world renowned golf course designer Cynthia Dye from Dye Design

The golf course design process required a long term, careful study of the site conditions, characteristics and restrictions. The Dye team worked closely with the local government’s planning and engineering departments as

well as several concerned national ministries. The design evolved through many reviews and exhaustive revisions to ensure a minimum disturbance of the environment and protection of the areas of existing drainage basins, dinosaur fossils and heritage pine trees. The beauty and challenge of this rare ocean side links course grows with each passing hole and although thrilling and dramatic it is available to all levels of golfers.

From Porto: Take the A4 towards PortoVila Real. Exit No. 15 at Km 57 on the A4 in the direction of Amarante Oeste/ Celorico de Basto. An 18-hole par 71 course of 6005 meters, Ponte de Lima Golf Club was inaugurated on the 15th of September 1995. Located on the rural area of Ponte de Lima, the golf course is a mix between level and hilly, the first nine holes being hilly and the second nine level. These unique characteristics in the northern region delight players with the fantastic views over the Lima valley as well as having contact with the typical Minho countryside. In the middle of the course, between holes 1, 10, 9, 18, is situated the Clubhouse where various services, such as reception, golf shop, hire of equipment, restaurant, bar, terrace,

The award-winning Vidago Palace Hotel Golf Course was redesigned by the firm Cameron & Powell from an original by Mackenzie Ross built in 1936. The course has now been rebuilt from scratch to meet USGA specifications for greens and tees and has been transformed into a par 72 course.

The Vidago Palace Hotel Golf Course is a course of striking contrasts, all with a particular respect for the natural surroundings. Distinctive features of this course include the support walls of all the tees, which are made of local stone, and the century-old trees, almost all of which have been preserved.

The first four holes, played within the Centenary Park of the Vidago Palace Hotel, anticipate the next 11, newly built in the Oura valley. The last three are played in the upper part of the Centenary Park, and afford

magnificent views to the neighboring hills and villages. Every hole is a challenge and each of the last nine is completely different from the one before, giving golfers the opportunity to deploy their full range of shots.
