What is Endometriosis? Endometriosis is the presence of endometrial tissue outside the endometrial cavity. These glands respond to cyclical hormones, thereby causing microscopic internal bleeding and pain during the course of the menstrual cycle. The ectopic tissue bleeds in episodes, causing inflammation, adhesions and scarring. The exact cause of endometriosis is unknown and there are multiple theories. Endometriosis does not always show symptoms. There appears to be a higher incidence of endometriosis in women who are diagnosed with infertility and pelvic pain. Endometriosis can occur in many forms, including the formation of cysts known as endometriomas (chocolate cysts), which typically develop in ovarian tissue.
