Welcome to the 48th annual Bloomington Gold event, which gives tribute this year to Zora Duntov. This has been a very unusual year to say the least. For many of you, Bloomington Gold staff included, this is your first car event of the year. Whether it is your first or third, thank you for choosing to spend the weekend at Bloomington Gold and it is so great to see you! Well, here we are at Lucas Oil stadium, a rather unique venue for a car show. And for the first time in 48 years, Bloomington Gold will have an indoor/outdoor show. I am not sure if anyone else was tracking the weather the last weekend of June in Indy…but it didn’t rain, it POURED all day on Saturday. So come rain or shine this year, we are covered! We also have a vast amount of space to spread out, social distance and still enjoy spending time around friends and fellow Corvette and Camaro lovers. As you enter the stadium from the South gate, you will find parked on the concourse the 2020 Gold Collection. This year’s collection was to put together in honor the of the Grandfather of the Corvette, Zora Duntov. Each car in the display was somehow significantly influenced by Zora and all have a fascinating story. Past the Gold Collection, you will find the 2020 Certification field. All of these cars are going for either Gold Certified®, SURVIVOR® or BENCHMARK®. You will also see a new class of certification this year: Resto Mod Certification! This is a new group of precisely restored cars that we are excited to add to Bloomington Gold Certification. As you continue north through the Concourse, please stop and visit our different vendors and sponsors. They will be just as happy to see you as you are to see them! Be sure to take the escalators down to field level. On this level is something that many people do not know about Lucas Oil Stadium: 40,000 square feet of exhibit space that hold a number of vendors. Don’t forget to spend time with them, but please also mind the traffic direction flow arrows in the Hall. It’s great to see you, even with a mask and from 6 feet away! Bloomington Gold COVID-19 Safety Measures Bloomington Gold and Lucas Oil Stadium are working closely with the state and local health departments to make sure you have a safe and healthy visit to our 2020 event! The following is an overview of what we are doing to ensure the cleanliness of our event, the stadium and the health of attendees and staff. KEEPING YOU SAFE DURING CERTIFICATION We will exercise extreme caution with all owners and respect their concerns without changing the integrity of the judging. We will release in advance explicit instructions for both the owners and the judges as to what the procedures will be this year during the judging process. For example: Owners check-in will be very different this year. The biggest change will be having a very specific time to enter the building and park your car on Thursday (starting first thing in the morning) so we can keep the process orderly. Judges will wear masks during the entire judging process Owners will be required to wear masks when they come in contact with Bloomington Gold Staff and Certification team members. Owners will receive their own set of disposable gloves, pen and hand sanitizer when they check in for certification. We are still working on the procedure for the award ceremony but assure you we will use the same caution that we will be using in the other areas of the show.

1970 The 1970 Chevrolet Corvette replaced the 4 side gills with an egg-crate vents on the side. The fenders were flared slightly to keep rocks from being kicked up and scratching the paint. The seats were redesigned again, this time to create more headroom. 1970 enlarged the “Big Block” (known as the Rat motor) to its largest displacement at 454 ci. The new option LT1 small block produced 370 bhp. The 350 engine was much lighter than the 454 and provided almost as much power as the lower end “Big Blocks”. The RPO ZR1 option included the LT1 engine, M22 (Rock Crusher) transmission, heavy-duty power brakes, transistor ignition, special aluminum radiator, and special springs, shocks, front and rear stabilizer bars and metal fan shrouds. The relatively low production in 1970 was caused by a labor dispute that started in May of 1969. This dispute caused the 1969 production run to be stretched 4 months and the 1970 run to be cut short. Tuxedo Black was no longer available as an exterior color although there were probably a few cars that were painted black as special orders. Bloomington Gold Certification What it’s all about and why it’s important to the sport! As you enter the stadium through the south entrance you find yourself at the start of the Certification Field, This is where almost 60 spotless, perfectly kept and precisely parked Corvettes are going for Certification. Even if you are not a Corvette collector yourself, the value that certification brings to a Corvette is good to the entire Corvette industry as it positively effects the overall value of the Corvette market. Each of the cars on the judging field is striving for anywhere between 1 and 4 different awards; Certification®, Survivor® , the much coveted Benchmark® and new this year Rest Mod Certification. They are competing against set standards and not each other. Here is a brief overview of each of these standards, as set by Bloomington Gold. GOLD CERTIFIED®- A GOLD CERTIFIED® Corvette appears as it would just after completion of “typical factory production.” It means that a Corvette has been preserved or restored within 95% of the way it appeared when it left the factory – no better, no worse, no different. Bloomington Gold’s standards for authenticity and condition are clear – the goal is to attain historic perfection, not cosmetic perfection. A Certified Corvette can be restored, but it must be restored to the way it left the factory. This is where the art of restoration comes into play. SURVIVOR® -The SURVIVOR® Award is designed to recognize those Corvettes that are “worn in, but not worn out.” A SURVIVOR® Corvette is significantly unrestored, unrepaired, or unmodified and meets these requirements: old • CanIs overpass20ayears road test • Retains OEM engine over 10 miles • Remains unrestored, un-refinished, or unaltered • A SURVIVOR® Corvette award recognizes Corvettes that are highly unrestored. Most of the parts and paint must be original to that car. That is why some SURVIVOR® cars are not as pretty as you would expect them to be as the paint has aged over time…This is ok ! BENCHMARK® Certification - This is the ultimate standard for unrestored vehicles. To achieve BENCHMARK® status, an unrestored Corvette must attain GOLD CERTIFIED® and excel in all four categories of SURVIVOR® during the same weekend. To date, fewer than 5% of the Corvettes that have been Certified have received the prestigious BENCHMARK® Award. This year, there are 14 Corvettes on the judging field going for BENCHMARK®! Resto Mod “recognizes the seamless integration of today’s possibilities into yesterday’s performers by applying today’s capabilities and styling enhancements that result in improved styling, handling, performance, and comfort to modern standards while retaining a classic original design”.
Rare and One of the Kind Corvettes on the Judging Field There are a few rare and unique Corvettes on this year’s Certification field, starting with a 1963 ZO6 Corvette. The 63 ZO6s were factory built race cars in their day! And many of them have great racing history. We also have a fantastic 1969 L88 going for Gold. There is also a ’65 396/425 Corvette going for SURVIVOR® Gold that all should check out! In the middle of the judging cars on the Concourse there are two really unusual Corvettes. One is lipstick red and has 1000 hp ! The other looks like a 1967 on the outside, but, not when you open the hood to see a big LS3 power plant! These are the first Resto Mods to go for Resto Gold - the newest judging process at Bloomington Gold Corvettes.
The Value an Authenticated Corvette brings Buyers at Auction Something all of us want when making a purchase, especially a large or expensive one, is that we get what we are actually paying for. In other words, we want what we are buying to be authentic. When we go to a jewelry store and look to buy a diamond, one of the key factors in making the decision to buy is whether the jeweler can prove that the diamond is in fact authentic. To the naked eye, a rock may seem like a priceless, rare diamond. Yet someone that is a total stranger to us, yet deemed an expert jeweler, can often look at the diamond and immediately determine if it is authentic and the value it holds on the market. While jewelers have a process and even tools to prove that what they are selling is authentic, how do buyers of collectible cars get the same reassurance from the seller? One way to determine the authenticity of a Corvette is to look at the certification that the car has received. This includes judging awards and proof of Certification to name a few. Exactly how does a Corvette receive these valuable and often prestigious recognitions? Through a very thorough judging process, such as the one at Bloomington Gold Corvettes. For example, at Bloomington Gold, judging is done on four sections of the car: the exterior, the interior, the chassis and the engine compartment. In addition, the fundamentals are judged which include manufacturer tags and numbers. These together all determine the legitimacy of the car. If the Corvette meets all of the set standards, it becomes certified. As a result, a Bloomington Gold Certified Corvette is recognized as a high ranking and authentic Corvette with the best “report card” of all the Corvettes, adding value to the car and putting it at the top of the list at the auction. Before you buy your next gem, make sure what you are buying is authentic, and look for the awards and certification the Corvette has received. At auctions, cars will have their certificates and awards on display; most sellers even have the Corvette’s judging sheet available to review. The reason is simple, these awards and certificates ensure the buyer they are getting an authentic Corvette and they also ensure the seller they will get a higher sale price. Take the time to do a little research and see which of the Corvettes at the auction are certified and in the long run, the time spent will pay off in the value of the Corvette you buy!

Meet Special Guest Jerry Burton at the Gold Collection Jerry Burton is an automotive historian who has authored Zora Arkus-Duntov, the Legend Behind Corvette, Corvette: America’s Sports Car and 100 Years of Chevrolet (co-authored with Ralph Kramer). Burton is also known in the Corvette world for his 20-year history as editor and publisher of Corvette Quarterly magazine and is the former editor of Hagerty Magazine. He has also written many performance-oriented ads for Corvette and Chevrolet. It was in this capacity that he authored the Heartbeat of America theme line for Chevrolet in the mid 1980s. He was inducted into the National Corvette Museum Hall of Fame in 2014.
