1966 CORVETTE 427CU.IN. / 425HP BIG TANK Owned by: Irwin Kroiz, Ambler PA A unique hood graces certain 1966 Corvettes. Underneath is a 427 cubic inch V8 engine. This high performance engine is rated at 425 hp with an 11.0:1 compression ratio. This Corvette was sold new through Tipotex Chevrolet Company in Brownsville, Texas, and delivered with seventeen options making it one of if not the highest optioned 1966 Corvettes produced. The options: the original 427/425hp motor, 36.5 gallon fuel tank, 4 speed transmission, leather interior, headrest seats, vacuum power brakes, heavy duty brakes, power windows, transistor ignition, heavy duty suspension, power steering, positraction axle, off road exhaust system, am/fm radio, tinted windows, teak steering wheel, and gold stripe tires. The odd thing about this car is that the 36.5 gallon fuel tank was not ordered on the original order form. When the Corvette arrived at Tipotex Chevrolet Co., it had the 36.5 gallon fuel tank. Further investigation reveled there was a mix-up at the factory and the car was built with the big tank. The original dealer invoice documents the big tank showing the NO3 option and the increase price of $196.57. There were only 66 big tank Corvettes produced in 1966. The Corvette is documented with the original dealer invoice and order form along with a copy of the original title.

1966 CORVETTE CONVERTIBLE 427/450 Owned by: Robert Coons, Monroe LA According to Ralph Osterman, the brother of Floyd Osterman - the original owner of 1966 Corvette # 02836, the birth of this car began in the 3rd quarter of 1965. Ralph and Floyd were car guys. They were always looking to buy the next great new car. When Floyd realized Chevrolet was going to offer a 450 hp Corvette he headed straight to Harry Mann Chevrolet in Los Angeles, CA. Even though Floyd was told several times it was too early to take a deposit, he remained persistent, and made several attempts until Harry Mann accepted his deposit for a red on red 450 hp convertible with 411 gears. We now know that his persistence was crucial because only cars ordered before the start of production were delivered with 450 hp paperwork. Floyd owned the car until his passing in 1985, after which the car was left to Ralph. At that time the odometer read 45,000 miles. Prior owners included Bill Mock, various collectors, and the current owner, Bob Coons, purchasing in 2007. Still in excellent original condition and driven only 3,000 miles since 1985, the car was campaigned across the country earning Bloomington Gold Benchmark and NCRS Duntov awards.

1966 CORVETTE L88 PENSKE RACER Owned by: Kevin Mackay, Valley Stream NY As they worked behind the scenes to promote racing, all the while allowing corporate deniability, Corvette engineers recognized the merit in working with “big players” could maximize their chance of success. So it was when Zora ArkusDuntov phoned Roger Penske in October 1965 to offer a secret new racing version of the newly introduced 427 CID big block engine, the L88. This would include not only the prototype L88 engine, but also associated air intake and cooling equipment. Penske, with Sunoco sponsorship, hired California racer Dick Guldstrand to assemble the team, pick up a red big block coupe at the factory, and drive it back to Penske’s shop in Pennsylvania for race prep. Guldstrand drove away from St.Louis on January 14, 1966, wrapped in blankets in the heater delete, ground pounding, anything but a street car. The goals were Daytona and Sebring and it won in both, a tremendous achievement! When Chevrolet first offered racing components as options on 1957 models, the phrase “showroom to racetrack” was attributed to the effort. In a way, this Penske L88 racer is a reversal: from racetrack to showroom, because proving the 427 engine in racing led to factory built L88s, becoming some of the most collectable Corvettes ever.

2015 BLOOMINGTON GOLD JUDGING RESULTS Bloomington Gold is excited to share the results of Certification Judging from the 2015 Event. Of the Corvettes that were judged, 92 of them were Gold Certified and 30 received Survivor Gold. 20 of these Corvettes earned the much coveted Benchmark award.

BLOOMINGTON GOLD CERTIFICATION...WHAT IT MEANS AND HOW TO OBTAIN IT Bloomington Gold is well known for their judging process and the prestige that it brings to a Corvette. While Certification is strictly for the purpose of the sport, many buyers look for the Bloomington Gold certification when buying a used Corvette as it offers assurance of the cars originality and authenticity. There are over 200 components on a Corvette that are carefully examined by a team of judges during the certification process. They specifically look at certain components such as tags, vin numbers, engine compartments, chassis, body & wheels, and the carâ€™s interior. While judging is open to all Corvette enthusiasts, it is recommended that anyone interested in having their Corvette judged to first visit the Bloomington Gold Web site so they become familiar with the judging process and guidelines. Also, be prepared! This is not a last minute decision to participate as it often takes months to prepare a car and registration fills up fast for some model age groups. Registration for 2016 opens February 1, 2016. CHANGES IN SURVIVOR CERTIFICATION FOR 2016 Changes in Survivor Certification for 2016-Bloomington Gold’s SURVIVOR® Award is designed to recognize those Corvettes that are “worn in, but not worn out.” A SURVIVOR Corvette is significantly unrestored, unrepaired, or unmodified. In the past, in order for a Survivor Corvette to be awarded a Survivor Bronze, it needed to be 50% or more unrestored in three of four judged sections. Starting in 2016, a Survivor Corvette will need to be 50% or more unrestored in all FOUR judged sections to attain the Bronze award. The four sections judged are: Exterior, Interior, Under Hood, Chassis. The Silver and Gold Survivor Award require 66% and 80% in all four sections.
