COUNCIL NEWS Message from your Councillors With only three months until the State Election, we continue to advocate strongly on behalf of our communities and to seek the investment needed to support our Shire’s growing population. In this issue, you’ll read about the advocacy campaign undertaken in the lead up to the election, as well as a refresher on the focused set of priority areas that are critical to supporting our community now and into the future. As a Councillor group, we have been committed to working with all sides of politics to ensure Golden Plains Shire receives its fair share of investment. You can read more about our campaign on page 4. It’s also been fantastic to see the strong community participation in the recent Communication & Engagement Strategy. Your feedback will help shape a strategy that is transparent, accessible and community focused. Last Chance to Have Your Say on The Communication & Engagement Strategy Golden Plains Shire residents, businesses, community groups and visitors are invited to help shape how Council communicates and engages with the community in the future. Every year, Council delivers hundreds of projects, services and decisions that impact the daily lives of people across the Shire. To ensure communication is relevant, timely and meaningful, Council is reviewing how it shares information and involves the community in decision-making. Council wants to understand what people who live, work and enjoy the Golden Plains Shire expect when it comes to receiving information, hearing about local projects and services, and having opportunities to contribute to decisions that affect them.

As we head into the later half of the year, our attention turns towards the upcoming fire season and ensuring that all property owners and residents in the Shire are ready for the Fire Danger Period. Fire prevention is extremely important, and we’re continually looking at ways to educate and inform the community on how best to be prepared. You can read more about this on page 9. We also have some exciting events and initiatives happening in the coming months, including the Community Award nominations for 2027, the next E-Waste Drop-Off Event in Linton, the Garage Sale Trail, the Women’s Health Mobile Clinic, Seniors Festival and the Golden Plains Twilight Market. It’s an exciting time for the community and we look forward to seeing all these fantastic initiatives taking place. Footpath Works to Improve Teesdale Bus Stops Council will soon begin construction of new footpath connections to school bus stops along Bannockburn-Shelford Road in Teesdale, improving pedestrian access and safety for local residents. The project follows a road safety risk assessment of school bus stops along the road, which identified opportunities to enhance pedestrian connectivity and access to key pick-up and drop-off locations.
The Department of Transport and Planning has recently completed construction of new bus stop infrastructure, with Council now delivering the connecting footpaths as the next stage of the project. Contractors have been engaged to undertake the works, which are expected to commence in late September, weather permitting. These improvements will help provide safer and more accessible connections for bus users, supporting the ongoing enhancement of transport infrastructure for the Teesdale community.
View the Road Grading Schedule Golden Plains Shire residents can easily find out when their local unsealed road is scheduled for grading through Council’s online Road Grading Schedule. Road grading works are carried out regularly to maintain unsealed roads and improve driving conditions for residents and visitors across the Shire. The online schedule allows residents to search by township and view upcoming grading dates for specific roads. The Road Grading Schedule is updated throughout the year and includes both a map and a township-by-township listing, making it simple to check when works are planned in your area. Council encourages residents to visit the page regularly, as schedules may change due to weather conditions, emergency works or operational requirements. Residents who believe an unsealed road requires maintenance before its scheduled grading can submit a request to Council. Roads are inspected in line with Council’s intervention levels, and maintenance may be undertaken in accordance with Council’s Road Management Plan, where required. Council Progressing State Election Advocacy Priorities In March, Council released its 2026 State Election Priorities, identifying eight key areas requiring bipartisan support to improve liveability, safety, connectivity and economic opportunity across the Shire. These priorities are: •

Since launching the campaign, Council has been actively engaging with Victorian Government Ministers, Shadow Ministers, local Members of Parliament and State Election candidates to advocate for projects that will support Golden Plains Shire’s growing communities. More recently, Council participated in the G21 and Greater Ballarat Alliance of Councils (GBAC) State Election advocacy campaigns, joining regional leaders in Melbourne to champion investment in regional Victoria and highlight priority transport and infrastructure projects. As part of the GBAC delegation to Parliament House, Council met with a range of Ministers, Shadow Ministers and ministerial advisors to discuss local priorities relating to roads, bridges, transport and regional infrastructure. These meetings provided an opportunity to promote Golden Plains Shire’s priorities with decision-makers responsible for transport, regional development, local government, planning, housing, economic growth and community sport. Council has also continued local advocacy efforts through meetings with Member for Eureka Michaela Settle MP and State Election candidates across the region, including Liberal candidates Andy Pobjoy (Geelong) and Emma Muir (Eureka). Discussions have focused on the infrastructure and services needed to support population growth and improve outcomes for local communities. Key priorities highlighted through these meetings include duplication of the Midland Highway, increased public transport and bus services, future passenger rail connections between Bannockburn and Geelong, sewerage infrastructure for Meredith, new kindergarten facilities, enhanced emergency services, off-road trail connections and improved mobile and digital connectivity. Council will continue working with representatives from all sides of politics in the lead-up to the 2026 Victorian State Election to ensure the needs of Golden Plains communities remain front of mind and to secure investment in projects that will benefit residents now and into the future. Bannockburn Bike Park Open The Bannockburn Bike Park officially opened on Monday 13 July, providing local riders and families with a new destination to ride, connect and enjoy the outdoors. The $1.2 million project, which commenced in February, has transformed the site into a modern recreational space catering for riders of all ages and abilities. Key features include three bike tracks designed to challenge a range of skill levels, accessible pathways, street furniture and LED lighting. Additional seating and a shelter are also set to be installed in the coming months, further enhancing the visitor experience. The Bannockburn Bike Park Project was funded through a partnership between the Victorian Government and Golden Plains Shire Council, with $900,000 provided through Round 2 of the Victorian Government’s Regional Community Sports Infrastructure Fund and Council contributing $305,672.
Pollocksford Road Bridge Upgrade to Progress The Pollocksford Road Bridge Upgrade has reached an important milestone, with the project now progressing into its next phase. The advancement marks a significant step forward for local communities who have been eagerly awaiting progress on the bridge and its eventual reopening. The next stage of the project reflects the strong partnership between Golden Plains Shire Council and Surf Coast Shire Council. Both Councils have worked collaboratively to progress planning and secure positive outcomes for communities on both sides of the municipal boundary. The partnership has been instrumental in moving the project forward and ensuring the bridge remains a priority for both councils. With work set to commence, the project is moving closer to restoring an important transport link for local residents, businesses and visitors. The upgrade will improve the safety, reliability and long-term resilience of the bridge, helping to strengthen connectivity across the region.

Free E-Waste Drop-Off Event Coming to Linton Following the strong community response to recent e-waste drop-off events in Meredith and Bannockburn, Golden Plains Shire Council is pleased to bring the next event to Linton. Residents are invited to drop off unwanted electronic items for recycling. Recycling e-waste supports a circular economy by recovering resources such as metals, plastics, glass and circuit boards for use in new products, while preventing potentially harmful substances from entering the environment.

COMMUNITY NEWS Free Accredited Training for youth Council is helping local young people take the next step towards employment through free accredited training opportunities delivered as part of its Youth Work Ready Program. The program will deliver accredited courses designed to help young people gain practical skills, industry-recognised qualifications and greater confidence as they prepare for employment. Fright Night Open Mic to Showcase Young Talent in Golden Plains Shire. Young performers are being encouraged to step into the spotlight when the Fright Night Open Mic comes to Golden Plains Shire on Saturday 31 October. Delivered by the FUSE Amplify Committee, this free, youth-led community event celebrates local talent, creativity and self-expression while bringing together young people, families and the wider community in a safe and inclusive environment. The event provides an opportunity for young people aged 12 to 25 years to showcase their talents, build confidence and connect with others through music and performance. COMMUNITY NEWS Summer is Fast Approaching – Get Fire Ready While the weather may still be cold, spring has arrived and summer is just around the corner. Now is the time to prepare your property for the upcoming Fire Danger Period. Taking action early can help reduce fire risk, protect your property and support the safety of the wider community. Completing maintenance before conditions become hotter and drier can also make it easier to keep your property compliant throughout the fire season.
Council’s role during the Fire Danger Period
Property maintenance requirements
Under the Country Fire Authority (CFA) Act, Councils are required to inspect properties and issue Fire Prevention Notices where necessary to reduce fire hazards.
Property owners and occupiers are encouraged to ensure their land is well maintained ahead of and throughout the Fire Danger Period.
To help property owners prepare, Council will write to vacant landowners in early October advising that Fire Prevention Officers will begin annual fire hazard inspections from early November.
Key requirements include:
Vacant land requires the same level of attention as occupied properties. Regular maintenance of grass and vegetation plays an important role in reducing fire risk across the municipality.
•
Residential properties: Grass must be maintained below 100mm.
•
Properties larger than two hectares: Grass must be kept below 100mm for at least 20 metres around homes and outbuildings.
•
Firebreaks: Property owners may be required to establish and maintain firebreaks along boundaries to help protect neighbouring properties.
•
Grazing properties: Ensure adequate stock levels are available to help keep grass at safe heights throughout the season.
Why are Fire Prevention Notices issued? Each year, the CFA declares Fire Restrictions for Golden Plains Shire based on seasonal conditions, including weather patterns and fuel curing levels. During the Fire Danger Period, landowners are responsible for managing grass and other fine fuels on their properties. Fire Prevention Notices may be issued where fire hazards are identified to ensure properties meet the requirements of the CFA Act and help reduce the risk of fire spreading.

Take the Step10 Challenge Golden Plains Shire Council is inviting women to join the Step10 Challenge, a 10week walking program designed for those who are not currently walking regularly and would benefit from encouragement, support and connection. Beginning on 21 September 2026, participants can gradually build their fitness and confidence through weekly walks while working towards a celebratory 10km walk in December 2026. Walkers can choose which sessions suit their schedule and attend as many or as few walks as they like, with regular participation encouraged. The program provides a supportive environment for women to improve their physical and mental wellbeing, meet new people and form lasting friendships.
School Holiday Fun in Golden Plains Shire Golden Plains Shire Council is hosting a series of free activities for young people aged 12 to 25 years throughout the upcoming Spring School Holidays, with exciting activities running from Tuesday 22 September to Friday 2 October 2026. The free school holiday activities held across the Shire have been designed to support the needs and interests of young people, as well as providing opportunities to learn new skills and connect with other young people. Teesdale Turtle Bend Concept Designs Now Available Golden Plains Shire Council has released the concept designs for Stage 1 and Stage 2 at the Teesdale Turtle Bend Recreation and Events Space, following completion of the Master Plan informed by extensive community consultation in 2024. The designs include proposed upgrades to the bike and skate facilities, car park and playspace, helping position the project for construction when funding becomes available. The plans reflect the community’s long-term vision for the reserve and will enhance recreation, play and accessibility opportunities for residents and visitors.

Seniors Festival is back this October Golden Plains Shire Council would like to thank everyone who submitted an Expression of Interest for the upcoming Seniors Festival. Seniors Festival will take place from 1 to 31 October, celebrating ageing and providing opportunities for older adults to connect, participate, and engage with their community. Each year, Golden Plains Shire Council coordinates a diverse program of events and activities that promote an active, healthy and connected lifestyle. The program includes a variety of community-led and Council-run activities across the Shire. The 2026 Seniors Festival program will be released shortly. National Carers Week 2026 Golden Plains Shire Council will host an event to recognise and celebrate the valuable contribution of carers in our community during October for National Carers Week, 11 to 17 October 2026.
