PROGRAM NOTES
Composed in 1927 by Kōsaku Yamada, “Akatonbo” (Red Dragonfly) is one of Japan’s most beloved and iconic melodies, standing as a poignant anthem of nostalgia and childhood memory.
The text, written by symbolist poet Rofū Miki, evokes the bittersweet memory of an autumn sunset where the narrator, as an infant, watched red dragonflies while being carried on the back of his young nursemaid. Beneath the simple imagery lies a deeper sorrow: at age fifteen, the caretaker is abruptly married off, severing the narrator's connection to his early childhood.
With “Fantasy on Akatonbo”, the composer seeks to pay tribute to the tender feelings associated with childhood memories, alternating between a sense of gratitude for having experienced them and a sense of deep melancholy at no longer being able to relive them. Each of us has our own “red dragonfly”, and the soloist, as such, guides us through this alternating flow of emotions in a constant dialogue with the band.
ABOUT THE COMPOSER
Born in Mantua in 1989, Luca Pettinato graduated with a degree in Composition from the Conservatory of Music of his hometown followed by a degree with honors in Wind Band Orchestration from the Conservatory of Music of Trent. His music have appeared in concert programs in various Italian cities and abroad (Spain, France, Austria, Slovenia, Norway, Hungary, Germany and Japan). In 2013, the jury of the international composition competition for sacred music “Benedetto XVI” in Rome, presided over by Ennio Morricone, awarded him the 2nd prize. In 2017 he was awarded the 2nd prize at the international composition competition for marches “Città di Allumiere” (Rome) and the 1st prize (section B) at the international competition of original compositions for youth wind band organized by the Wind Band Federation of the Province of Trent. In 2022, the Wind Bands of Gazoldo degli Ippoliti (Mantua) and Dossobuono (Verona), where Luca Pettinato has been the conductor since 2010 and 2017 respectively, won 1st prize in the third and second categories at the “Flicorno d’Oro” International Band Competition; thanks to these achievements, he received a special mention from the jury. In 2025, he won the 6th Young Composer's Competition organised by Joe Hisaishi in Tokyo, the only prize awarded out of 123 participants. His works are published by Scomegna Edizioni Musicali, Da Vinci Publishing and Golden Hearts Publications.

1927 年に山田耕筰によって作曲された「赤とんぼ」は、郷愁と幼い頃の記憶を呼び起こす、日本で最 も愛され親しまれている名曲の一つです。
象徴派の詩人・三木露風によるその歌詞は、秋の夕暮れ時のほろ苦い記憶を想起させます。そこでは、 幼い「私」が若い子守の背におぶわれながら、赤とんぼを眺める情景が描かれています。しかし、その 素朴な情景の背後には深い哀しみが潜んでいます。15 歳になったその子守は突然嫁いでしまい、それに よって「私」と幼少期とのつながりは断ち切られてしまうのです。
作曲者は「『赤とんぼ』による幻想曲」において、幼い頃の記憶にまつわる優しい想いに敬意を表そう と試みています。そこでは、そうした記憶を経験できたことへの感謝と、二度とそれらを追体験できな いことへの深い哀愁とが、交互に交錯します。私たち一人ひとりの中にそれぞれの「赤とんぼ」が存在 するように、ソリストはバンドとの絶え間ない対話を通じて、こうした揺れ動く感情の移ろいへと私た ちを導いていきます。

作曲者について
1989 年マントヴァ生まれのルカ・ペッティナートは、故郷の音楽院で作曲の学位を取得後、トレント 音楽院で吹奏楽オーケストレーションの学位を優秀な成績で取得しました。彼の作品は、イタリア各地 および海外（スペイン、フランス、オーストリア、スロベニア、ノルウェー、ハンガリー、ドイツ、日 本）のコンサートで演奏されています。2013 年には、エンニオ・モリコーネが審査委員長を務めたロ ーマの国際宗教音楽作曲コンクール「ベネデット 16 世」で第 2 位を受賞しました。2017 年には、ロー マの国際行進曲作曲コンクール「チッタ・ディ・アルミエーレ」で第 2 位、トレント州吹奏楽連盟主催 の青少年吹奏楽のためのオリジナル作品国際コンクールで第 1 位（B 部門）を受賞しました。 2022 年、 ルカ・ペッティナートがそれぞれ 2010 年と 2017 年から指揮者を務めるガゾルド・デッリ・イッポリテ ィ吹奏楽団（マントヴァ）とドッソブオーノ吹奏楽団（ヴェローナ）は、「フリコルノ・ドーロ」国際 吹奏楽コンクールで第 3 部門と第 2 部門でそれぞれ 1 位を獲得し、審査員から特別賞を授与されました。 2025 年には、久石譲主催の第 6 回若手作曲家コンクール（東京）で優勝。123 名の参加者の中で唯一の 受賞者となりました。彼の作品は、スコメーニャ・エディツィオーニ・ムジカーリ、ダ・ヴィンチ・パ ブリッシング、ゴールデン・ハーツ・パブリケーションズから出版されています。
