PRESIDENT’S NOTE Dan Bouet
May is a good time for the club as we head into the warmer months and wrap up the spring season.
Thanks to everyone who’s been coming out to events and helping where needed. It keeps things running smoothly and makes a difference.
Coming out of April, we’ve got good momentum. The club is in a strong position overall, with solid membership numbers and a healthy financial outlook. The Board has approved the 2026 budget and is continuing to stay disciplined on the financial side. You may notice a higher-thannormal tax expense this year, as we’ve worked through and brought prior-year items current. Credit to our Treasurer, Steve Weddell, for putting in the time to get everything cleaned up and on track. He’s also put a lot of effort into building out this year’s budget and helping bring more structure and visibility to our financials.
I also want to share that Michael Mansour has stepped down as Director at Large, and both he and Jia have stepped down as Social Chairs. We appreciate the time and effort they’ve put into the club and wish them the best. We will be working to fill those roles in the near term.
It’s also time to start looking ahead to our elections later this year. The President, Vice President, and two Director at Large positions will be up for election. A nominating committee has been formed, and we’ll be looking for candidates. If you’ve ever thought about getting more involved or helping shape where the club goes, this is a great opportunity.
There’s a lot in motion right now - event planning, bylaw updates, and ongoing work around branding and the club logo.
We’ve still got a full calendar ahead in May, so take advantage before the summer heat slows down the activities!
If you’re interested in getting more involved, we can always use the help. It’s a great group, and it’s a good way to get more out of the club and meet others.

Jake Peel has shared his Old Tucson Drive/Overnighter trip, check out pages 36 -39.
Steve Brenner joined in the fun at the CAF Tour and wrote a nice article on pages 44-45.
As a special bonus, Rich Andrade has written a very in-depth article about the CAF Tour and also all about the history of some of the Aircraft, it’s well worth a read….pages 46-49.
Our resident Driving Experience Co-Ordinator (yah, I made that up) Rook Younger and his wife Debbie purchased a new Cayman and headed out on an epic driving adventure, pages 56 -60.
Rita Spenkle has written about the Ladies-Only drive to Bartlett Lake, see pages 70-71.

APPOINTED POSITIONS
The Arizona Region Board of Directors are still looking for members to volunteer to become part of the Team in filling the four appointed positions listed below:

Equipment Chair – Responsibilities: Coordinate with different event Chairs to ensure that equipment is available to event coordinators and that each Region item is correctly catalogued and stored correctly. This person will also facilitate delivery and/or pickup to club functions using various methods available.
Technical Advisor – Responsibilities: Provide technical expertise to the Region members regarding routine Porsche maintenance and fielding questions regarding the various vehicle system and components. Provide assistance to the Tech Session Coordinator with the planning and scheduling of the tech sessions. Contribute to Going Places Newsletter with monthly tech articles.
Road Rally Chair – Responsibilities: Plan, coordinate, and/or select a Rally Event Chair to facilitate Road Rallies for the Club members to enjoy in a safe & friendly competition environment driving the Porsche car on the public highways within the scope of all Arizona Revised Statutes. The road rally category type will be at the discretion of the rally chair from a Gimmick Rally to a Navigational Rally, pursuant to the National PCA Region Procedures Manual (RPM).
PCA Juniors Program Coordinator – Responsibilities: Plan, coordinate, promote and facilitate the activities for the PCA Junior members to participate in the Club social activities, pursuant to the National PCA RPM.
Upcoming AZPCA Driving Tours
ADriving Tour is a relaxing drive in your Porsche, to an interesting destination in and around the Phoenix metro area, and sometimes to further destinations around the state and beyond. Our drives typically feature beautiful scenery and great Porsche driving roads. Driving Tours are non-competitive events, meant to provide enjoyment with your car in the company of other Porsche owners sharing an interesting experience.
The Arizona Region offers many driving tours throughout the year. The list below shows tours planned for the upcoming months. Please note that dates and other details are subject to change. Check the website events calendar for the most up-to-date schedule.
May 8 — Driving Tour to Show Low via Salt River Canyon
Join this scenic and exciting drive from Mesa to Show Low, where we will have lunch at the House in a nice outdoor setting. We’ll enjoy great views along with plenty of hairpin curves for us to navigate.
May 13 — Ladies Drive to Tonto Natural Bridge
Join your PCA lady friends for a drive up the Mogollon Rim to Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. We have a covered ramada reserved, with parking for our Porsches adjacent to the ramada. Bring a picnic lunch and a dessert to share.

17 — Music Cruise on Saguaro Lake
Please join us for a leisurely lunch at Arrivederci Cucina Italiana in Fountain Hills, followed by a scenic drive to Saguaro Lake, where we will board the Desert Belle for an 80 minute Music Cruise.

21-22 — Sonoita Wine Tasting Tour
We will enjoy a group drive to Soniota, southeast of Tucson, where we will stay at the Sonoita Inn. A bus tour will take us from the hotel to enjoy lunch, followed by a visit to three Premium wineries (Los Milics, Rune, and Dos Cabezas). After the wine tasting, we will have dinner at the historic Steak Out in Sonoita.

— Ken Steele Apline Tour XXVI
Our group will escape the Valley heat for a weekend on some of the best roads in Arizona to our destination, Long Shadow Lodge at Tai-Wi-Wi. We transition from desert to Alpine views on the curviest road in Arizona, which some say has 460 turns! As always, we will hold our Happy Hour on Friday night and the restaurant at the lodge will be open for dinner.

About the event: Join your fellow PCA Ladies for a fun and interactive four-course cooking and lunch experience! A Special AZPCA Event - Sonoita Wine Tasting
The AZPCA is holding an Overnight Wine Tasting/Driving Tour Event in the beautiful Sonoita Wine Tasting Region, southeast of Tucson, AZ on May 21,22 2026
• We will enjoy a group drive from Phoenix to Sonoita and stay at the Sonoita Inn.
• We will then take a bus tour from the hotel to the Sonoita wine area, enjoy lunch and then visit 3 Premium wineries (Los Milics, Rune and Dos Cabezas).
• We will then take the bus back to the hotel and go to the SteakOut restaurant.
• We may do an optional drive-up Mt Lemmon on the next day

Join us this year for a great weekend drive to cooler temperatures and great conversation as we gather at Long Shadow Lodge at Tai-Wi-Wi in Alpine AZ!
On Friday morning our group will depart the Valley for a weekend on some of the best roads in Arizona to our destination, Long Shadow Lodge at Tai-Wi-Wi. Saturday, you can explore on your own or join the group AZPCA drive through New Mexico, south to Clifton, Arizona and N on US 191 the old 666 Devils Highway. You start off at 3,000 feet elevation driving up to 8,000 feet. We transition from desert to Alpine views on the curviest road in Arizona, which some say has 460 turns! But you can count them for yourself.
Long Shadow Lodge at Tal Wi Wi, is under new ownership. The restaurant will be open for dinner and maybe coffee and donuts in the morning. Over the winter, the Lodge added a pizza oven. As always, we will hold our Happy Hour on Friday night.
This event always fills up quickly! Limited to 20 vehicles

The Bearded Barber Speakeasy, hidden within a classic fully functioning barbershop, will open exclusively for PCA Arizona Region members for this private event. This gathering blends the relaxed camaraderie of a traditional Porsche & Pancakes with the distinctive ambiance of a prohibition-style speakeasy lounge.

For this event, The Bearded Barber Speakeasy will feature a special brunch menu created exclusively for Porsche Club of America Arizona Region attendees. Guests will be able to choose between 3 or 4 brunch favorites specifically selected for the gathering, along with coffee and optional craft cocktails available at the bar.

The sponsorship programs were designed to allow our current and new advertisers and sponsors a simple way to choose a program that will include; digital on-line published newsletter and internet exposure opportunities all for one simple investment.
The sponsorship program has five tiers:
Bronze - Our Bronze level includes one small website banner on our Home and Sponsors page and a one eighth-page (3.5″x2″ business card) color or grayscale ad in the Going Places publication. Fee - $250. annually
Silver - Our Silver level includes one medium website banner on our Home and Sponsors page and a one quarter-page (3.5″x4.75″) color or grayscale ad in the Going Places publication. Fee - $600. annually
Gold - Our Gold level includes one medium website banner on our Home and Sponsors page, inclusion in the rotating banner on our homepage, a one half-page (8″x5″) color or grayscale ad in the Going Places publication and AZPCA E-Blasts. Fee - $1200. annually
Titanium - Our Titanium level includes one large website banner on the Main page and Sponsors page, inclusion in the rotating banner on our homepage, one-full page (8″x5″) color or grayscale ad in the Going Places publication and AZPCA E-Blasts. Fee - $2500. annually
Platinum - Our Platinum level includes one large website banner on the Main page and Sponsors page, inclusion in our rotating banner on our homepage, an embedded video, and one full-page (8″x10″) color or grayscale ad inside the front cover in the Going Places publication. Fee - $10,000. annually
It is the responsibility for each sponsor to develop and design their unique promotional ads. Sponsors must submit their own artwork electronically for ads in gif, pdf, jpeg or swf (for website ads) formats. New sponsorships will run yearly, and investment will be prorated for any new sponsor who commits mid-year. The acceptance and display of advertising in this publication does not constitute an endorsement of the advertiser or product by the Porsche Club of America, Arizona Region. AZPCA reserves the right to refuse to print any ad it deems inappropriate. Sponsorships must be prepaid. Staff reserves the right to change rates upon notice at any time.

No prior experience necessary.
Get involved by volunteering for one of our HPDE program roles below:
Corner Worker/Flagger - COMPENSATED ROLE• $100 cash or a future track day credit ($175 value). Observe cars on track and provide flagging communication to drivers. Radio in to Chief of Course regarding any incidents, issues, and need to flag drivers. 8 hr full day commitment
Driving Instructor- Experienced drivers who are interested in becoming a PCA Instructor.
Grid Marshal- Radio communication with the Chief of Course and Corner Workers to release vehicles onto the track from Pre-Grid, and direct the flow of cars on and off the track. Approx. 2-7 hr commitment (part day to full day).
Lunch Pickup/Prep/Cleanup- Pickup lunch from a nearby location and/or lunch prep and cleanup.
Photographer-Capture photos of the event from great vantage points on the track or paddock for publication in Going Places. Approx. 2 hr commitment.
Pre-Grid-While cars are staged waiting to enter the track, check driver wristbands and confirm other safety guidelines are being met prior to releasing vehicles. Approx. 2-7 hr commitment (part to full day).
Registration-Check in drivers and their guests at the track gate entrance. Approx. 2 hr early AM commitment.
Safety Tech- Using our safety checklist, inspect vehicles and helmets to ensure compliance. Approx. 2 hr early AM commitment
Setup / Breakdown-Assist with unloading/loading and set up of equipment such as tables, chairs, canopy, PA system, etc. Approx. 1 hr commitment, early AM or late afternoon.
Writer-Write an editorial on the event, perhaps with an interview or two from drivers for publication in Going Places. Approx. 2 hr commitment.

AZPCA Regional Autocross Season - 2026
AUTOCROSS IS NOW ON A SUMMER BREAK WATCH THIS SPACE FOR THE FALL SCHEDULE
About the NEW Autocross events:
Join us for our AZPCA autocross at The Phoenix Raceway Location address is 7602 Jimmie Johnson Dr, Avondale, AZ 85323 Non-Porsches are welcome to participate. Multi lap format. Contact our NEW event co-ordinator Ealing Jahn for more information. $99 for the event - there is no on site registration. If you wish to have someone, who is not an entrant, over 18 years old and who is an immediate household member, as a passenger for a taste of autox please pre-register and pay the $10 fee.
Drivers can invite guests only during pre-registration who must complete all waivers, but cannot be a passenger. Gates open at 7:00 am. First car out at 8:30 am. Rental helmets can be reserved during the online registration process. Sorry but no go-karts, Polaris type, formula or other exoskeleton vehicles permitted.
A link to the Porsche waiver will be sent to you via email, information on the Phoenix Raceway paper waiver will be provided in your event receipt and is available on site.

Autocross is the sport of trying to navigate your car through a defined course of pylons usually on a large parking lot, faster than your competition.
Autocross courses are set up using soft orange traffic pylon cones (which will not damage your car) and events are run at speeds usually between 40 -65 MPH, usually all in 2nd gear. Autocross is a “performance driving event” and a safe way to learn how to drive your car at its limits. You not only learn how to handle your car at speeds that you drive daily, but you also: Gain confidence in your driving ability. Learn the limits of your car’s brakes. Learn correct seating, hand, and feet positions. Learn the limits of your car’s tire adhesion. Most importantly, autocross is a social gathering of friends with a common interest and is simply a ton of fun!
Your family is welcome and there are usually plenty of people to socialize with.
Be prepared for big fun.
AZPCA HPDE Results - March 2026
March’s HPDE event was very well attended and a huge success by all accounts and bragging rights go to Jonathan Betancourt who came out on top on both days, Congrats.
The top chart is for Saturday, March 28, and Session 1 is in the morning and session 2 is in the afternoon for each day. The bottom chart is for Sunday, March 29.
The time difference between the two days was because of a change in course direction.
Saturday was clockwise and Sunday was counter-clockwise.
HPDE and Autocross are now on summer sabbaticals, Have a great summer!!

AZPCA Off-Road Adventures - The Dirtier, the Better!
Arizona Region is planning for other Off-Road Driving Tours this year with plans to do Four Peaks possibly in May/June, and later this year, Castle Hot Springs and tentatively Kofa National Wildlife Refuge. Some of the outings may include picnicking on the trail. The future dates will be announced in this publication.

Day One: Old Tucson
The weekend kicked off at Old Tucson, where rows of Porsches set the tone right away bright, polished, and perfectly placed against the desert backdrop.
It was a relaxed start, with time to explore, talk, and enjoy being together. Between the cars, the setting, and the people, it felt less like an event and more like a group of friends reconnecting.

Day Two: Mount Lemmon
Day two was all about the drive. The road up Mount Lemmon delivered sweeping curves, cooler air, and incredible views overlooking the valley.
At one point, plans shifted due to a serious incident on the mountain. Out of respect, the group adjusted before continuing on.
Even with the change, the day was unforgettable beautiful scenery, great driving, and shared moments along the way.

Day Three: DeGrazia Museum & The Road Home
The final morning began with breakfast and one last chance to gather before heading out.
A visit to the DeGrazia Museum brought a quieter pace. The adobe architecture, colorful artwork, and unique details gave everyone time to slow down and take it all in.
From there, it was time to head home taking a different route and enjoying a few final miles together.
As the cars stretched out across the desert one last time, the weekend came to a close the same way it began: with great cars, great people, and memories made along the way.

Review - Porsches and Pilots - CAF Tour
Come Fly With Me………..
It was a very nice afternoon start for the AZPCA. After several days in a row with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees, we finally got a reprieve with the highs only in the 90’s. Though at our meeting place the one shady tree in the Target parking lot was a very popular spot where everyone congregated
Kudos go to Mark Baker and Jeanne Snyder for organizing the event and for the nicely prepared driving instructions, the color maps and also for the airplane shaped cookies.
Driving Tours usually are more about how you got there than the destination. But not this time. For this trip we were in for a special day with guided tours at the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Museum. Special thanks to our own AZPCA docents Nancy and Jim Golba for bringing us in.
To start the day our tour began at the Fountain Hill’s Target parking lot and after enjoying some good camaraderie the tour meeting commenced smoothly and we were soon on our way. We enjoyed a brief drive northward on AZ-87 before heading south on a leisurely drive on Bush Highway towards Mesa and the CAF Museum.
Upon arrival at the museum, we were directed to the designated group parking area. This gave us a spectacular view of a Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress which is a very similar plane to the plane(s) that were used in the movie “Memphis Belle” And now that I have actually been in the cock-pit on a B-17, have seen the Gun Turrets and walked the cat-walk where they dropped the bombs, I want to see that movie again. Just walking thru the plane with “bomb bays” open made my pulse race just imagining what it must have been like to be in-flight on those planes during the war
Review - Porsches and Pilots
Another major plane on display outside was a Douglas C-47, known as “Old Number 30” which had a distinguished service history flying spies behind enemy lines, delivering supplies and rescuing the wounded & refugees. This plane is currently a restoration in progress to bring it back to its original state.
Once inside the museum we were welcomed by the very knowledgeable museum docents that provided us with a great & informative tour At the CAF, the history of Air Force planes is well represented from WWI bi-planes to WWII bombers to the introduction of the Jet Age and modern supersonic jet bombers. Thank you again to everyone at the CAF museum that made our day possible. Our time at the CAF ended with group pictures in front the B-17G.
Lastly, we had a wonderful dinner and plenty of great conversation at Pacino’s Italian Restaurant in Mesa. Thank you again to Mark and Jeanne for organizing the event and to Nancy and Jim for being our AZPCA docents.
Definitely a memorable day!

Arizona Commemorative Air Force
B-25J Mitchell Maid in the Shade
B-25J Maid In The Shade served her war-time duty with the 319th Bomb Group, 437th Squadron at Serragia Airbase, Corsica. There it was assigned Battle Number 18. The plane flew 15 combat missions over Italy and Yugoslavia between November 4 and December 31, 1944.
C-47 (Civilian designation DC-3) Old Number 30
Serving with the 11th Troop Carrier Squadron, this aircraft flew highly classified missions transporting spies and supplies and rescuing wounded and refugees. This actual aircraft’s missions were lost to history for 70 years until now. Operation Halyard known in Serbian as Operation Air Bridge, was an Allied airlift operation behind Axis lines during World War II. In July 1944, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) drew up plans to send a team to the Chetniks force led by General Draža Mihailović in the German -occupied Territory of the Military Commander in Serbia for the purpose of evacuating Allied airmen shot down over that area. It was the largest rescue operation of American airmen in history. The plane was purchased by Hoover Vacuum Cleaner company and was converted to the current VIP configuration which seats twelve.
The Arizona Commemorative Air Force Museum is a living tribute to the aviators from early bi-planes to the F-16 era. In addition to many static aircraft (US/Chinese/Soviet) they offer flights in many types (N2S-3 Stearman bi-plane, SNJ/T-6 Texan, C-45/Beech 18, O-1 Bird Dog, the C-47, B-25 and B-17. Cottonwood/Clarkdale Verde Valley Train & Wine Tasting Event

Future AZPCA Event - Verde Valley Train & Wine Tasting
We will take a scenic drive north on the Beeline (SR87), through Payson, Pine, Camp Verde and into Cottonwood/Clarkdale.
The Verde Canyon Railroad offers a lovely wilderness excursion into an area of extreme natural beauty, following the curves of the Verde River, 20 miles up through a red rock canyon. It is full of unusual geology, abundant wildlife, lush greenery, and Native-American ruins, on vintage rails aboard vintage train cars.
There is something wonderful to be seen each season, and the train runs year-round. The route starts at the depot in Clarkdale, AZ and ventures 20 miles to the historic ranch town of Perkinsville. At Perkinsville the engines disconnect, come around on a sidetrack and reconnect at the back (now front) of the train to power us back home to Clarkdale. En route we pass vintage trestles, travel through a 734-foot tunnel and tour beautiful red rock canyon scenery and the riparian curves of the Verde River. The trip is fully narrated, and the narration is interspersed with fun railroad tunes of every genre.
The train has all the same comfortable living room-style accommodations, featuring overstuffed chairs and loveseats, complimentary appetizers, and a complimentary glass of champagne or sparkling cider upon boarding. Each person receives their own complimentary charcuterie box at their seat, featuring gourmet cheeses and meats, crackers, fruit, and brownie bites.

A New Porsche and Road Trip Adventure
Over the years since we joined PCA, my wife Debbie and I have enjoyed organizing, leading, and/or participating in many driving tours and other such events around Arizona and beyond with our friends in the club Our “touring” car for the past eight years was a 2018 Cayman, which served us well on long trips and local drives alike. But after eight years and 67,000 miles, the Cayman was getting a bit long in the tooth, with a few niggling issues Debbie and I were tired of dealing with. So it was time to replace our primary tourer with something new that we would enjoy with our Porsche friends on many more fun drives.
Unlike many car buyers, a lot of us in the Porsche world actually enjoy the process of researching, consulting knowledgeable friends and other experts, and doing the work needed to find just the right car and the right “deal.” I had some very specific requirements: New or CPO Cayman (2023 or newer), in grey metallic, silver, or Carmine Red; 6-speed manual; black leather and/or Sport-Tex interior, preferably with red trim details After much research, I found the Cayman “Style Edition” to be the car I wanted, and narrowed my search to cars available in Massachusetts, Florida, Texas, Riverside, California, and Evansville, Indiana. Of course, I would have much preferred to do business with our dealers in the Valley, but unfortunately none of them had anything that fit what I was looking for.
After discussions with all the potential dealers, which could get complicated with an out-of-state purchase, I decided to make the purchase through the dealer in Indiana. It turned out to be a very good decision. Evansville? They have a Porsche dealer there? Yes, D-Patrick Porsche is a “boutique” dealer that’s part of a larger automotive group. In my research I chanced to find the Style Edition that checked just about all the boxes for me. Being more interested in “style” than way more horsepower than I would ever need, the flat-4 turbo 300-hp 6-speed will do just fine. With the Sport Chrono Package, it’s all I need to go as fast as I want
After numerous emails, phone calls, and text messages back and forth with my sales consultant at DPatrick, Hayden Lummer, the Porsche sales manager called and offered “a deal I could not refuse” significantly below MSRP, which others would not consider. We “shook hands” on the deal over the phone, and the next project was, how are we going to get the new car to our home in Scottsdale? I considered having the car transported, but after researching several options, I decided to fly to Evansville and drive the car home. I love a driving trip! And I am the luckiest guy, in that Debbie does, too. The adventure encompassed three days and 1700 miles across mostly flat plains to our more familiar environs of the Southwest. Lots of driving, but that’s what we do!
We flew to Louisville, picked up a rental car and drove two hours to Evansville. That was more ”economical” than flying into Evansville via Chicago or Indianapolis (how do you think I got to own a Porsche?!). Next morning we would finally see our new Porsche in person! I was as anxious as a kid on Christmas morning. At the dealership we were greeted by the sales manager, Damien McDonald, a very personable guy who immediately struck me as someone who knows his Porsches and understands a Porsche customer like me. The dealership is small; very small compared to our impressive dealer facilities here in the Valley. But D-Patrick Porsche offered everything we might have hoped for, going out of their way to make the car-buying process a positive experience for us. The ceremonious unveiling revealed an even more striking impression than I had expected… The Vanadium Grey Metallic, black trim, 718 Spyder/GT4 wheels, PORSCHE side and hood stripes, etc. “popped” for me. Not a lot different from my previous Caymans, but with added STYLE.

The only “compromise,” I guess I’d say, is the rather unexceptional all-black interior, though the brushed aluminum trim adds a bit of interest to the otherwise pervasive black. But there are lots of aftermarket options for “individualizing” Porsches, and my plan is to dress up the interior with Sport-Tex seat inserts in a tartan plaid design, to add some flair to the cockpit.
Knowing we’d be making the long drive back home, Hayden and Damien presented us with a gift bag full of Porsche "accessories" for our trip: thermal travel mugs, leather key fobs, caps, T-shirts, microfiber towels... a thoughtful gesture that made us appreciate our relationship with the sales team even further.

One serious concern I had was that the car had no PPF (clear bra) to protect the finish from the inevitable road debris, blowing dust and sand, and other detritus we knew we’d encounter on the drive home. I wanted “my guy” to install the PPF when we got the car home anyway, so my solution was to wrap the vulnerable areas with Track Armour temporary paint protection film.
So before the car left the showroom we wrapped it up like a baby in swaddling clothes Not pretty, but functional, to protect the beautiful Vanadium Grey finish as we drove the many wind-swept miles of interstate highways from Indiana.
We wanted to take photos along the way to chronicle the drive, but strong winds with blowing sand and dust, along with a heavy rainstorm around Oklahoma City, put a damper on that. Plus, the bulk of our route encompassed parts of the country that, let's say, are not what inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write "America the Beautiful." Much of the route paralleled historic Route 66, and it would have been fun to stop at the many attractions, museums, historical markers, etc. along the way, particularly because this is the 100th anniversary of the Mother Road. But my priority was to get the new car home with as little drama and distraction as possible, so we just pressed on like the Joads in their overloaded old converted Hudson ‘til we made it to Scottsdale.

DAY 1:
Evansville to Catoosa, Oklahoma via St. Louis (562 miles)
• Originally we thought we’d stop and spend some time checking out the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, but as I learned before we left Evansville, it was Opening Day for the Cardinals, and we didn’t want to get caught up in the hoopla around that. (Had I known sooner, I would have gotten tickets and we would’ve spent the day there!). Debbie did get a couple good shots of the arch and Busch Stadium as we drove through the city, making our way to our first fuel stop at, of course, Costco!

• Across Missouri, with another gas stop in Springfield, then overnight in Catoosa, Oklahoma, just outside of Tulsa. One reason we picked this spot was because it was close to the Hard Rock Hotel, and we thought it would be fun to have dinner at the Hard Rock Café and pick up a guitar pin to add to my collection. But we found it was just a big ol’ casino with hotel attached, and disappointingly, no cafe or gift shop. So no Hard Rock Café pin on this trip.
DAY 2:
Catoosa to Albuquerque via Oklahoma City and Amarillo (657 miles)
• Next morning we got an early start (real early for us; still dark!) and headed for Oklahoma City. On starting the Cayman, a glitch popped up with the PCM system: “Navigation not available” and “No phone connected.” What?! I have owned the car for less than 48 hours and the PCM isn’t working? I was not happy. Fortunately, the unit found its brain once we got to Oklahoma City and there was no problem for the remainder of the trip, or since. Maybe just the new car finding its electronic legs on the long drive.
• The wind was fierce from Tulsa to OKC, bringing with it gusts of blowing sand, and we were hoping the wrap would do its job. After a stop for gas in Oklahoma City (Costco, again!) and breakfast, it started to rain heavily. But only for about 60 miles, and at least the wet kept down the blowing sand to some degree. The Pirelli P-Zeroes, while not yet broken in, did just fine in the wet.
• Next stop was Amarillo, just about smack dab in the middle of the Texas panhandle, where the scene along the road featured flat grasslands, lots of cattle, and surprising to us, lots of powergenerating wind turbines. Hundreds of them, spread over the open expanse of prairie that is this part of Texas.
• Lunch and gas at Buc-ee’s in Amarillo. If you have not been to a Buc-ee’s, you’re in for a treat when their Western-most store opens in Goodyear this summer. I describe it as a cross between a huge Cracker Barrel, the largest Circle K you can imagine, with more snack options than you can

count, as well as Texas BBQ, homemade fudge, jerky, pastries, and more. Also, 108 gas pumps, 24 EV charging stations, and clean bathrooms so welcome on a long road trip!
• After Amarillo it was on to Albuquerque for the night. We met our friend Harry Season for a dinner of authentic New Mexican cuisine. Glad I didn’t load up on jerky at Buc-ee’s. Harry was PCA Treffen Chair when we hosted the big national event in Scottsdale in 2021. He and his wife Doris have a second home in Scottsdale, and they have become good friends to Debbie and me. We talked into the evening about Porsches, PCA, and what new adventures the four of us are planning.
DAY 3: Albuquerque to Scottsdale via Flagstaff (458 miles)
• We felt we had the anxious parts of the trip behind us, as we would be on familiar highways all the way home from Albuquerque. The wind had finally died down when we got gas (Costco!) before heading to Gallup for coffee, and gas in Flagstaff. That was a big relief, as I was unsure how well the Track Armour was keeping the dirty wind from sandblasting the new car’s paint.
• The welcome site of the San Francisco Peaks outside of Flagstaff meant it was “all downhill” from here. An obligatory stop for pie at Rock Springs, then we were home by mid-afternoon
We weren’t home long before we peeled off the wrap and tossed the big wad of plastic into the trash, and celebrated its doing its job not a single rock chip or evidence of road rash to be found. After a good bath, the Vanadium Grey shone beautifully in the late afternoon Arizona light.
All in all, the experience turned out to be positive in every sense. Picking up the car in a part of the country we had never seen, the mostly uneventful miles of driving, and arriving home with a great memory for two people who love to drive and visit new places in the good ol’ USA.
Thanks to Hayden and Damien at DPatrick Porsche for the positive buying experience, and to the friendly people we met along the way on the long trip home. Now it's on to years of driving fun in the Style Edition with friends who share the passion for our special cars.

Twenty-one AZPCA members gathered on April 24 for a Ladies-only led drive and lunch under absolutely perfect skies. We met at the Target in Fountain Hills, and after a brief drivers meeting, ten cars set off on a scenic route through Fountain Hills, Rio Verde, and North Scottsdale, making our way to Bartlett Lake for lunch at The Cove Restaurant overlooking the lake.
The drive offered a few twists and turns, but everyone stayed on course and enjoyed the journey. The Cove provided a beautiful setting with stunning lake views. The menu had something for everyone, with a wide selection of salads, burgers, and sandwiches, and the servers were both friendly and efficient.
We were happy to welcome several new members and first-time drivers, and we hope to see them again at future events. It was truly a wonderful day of driving, connection, and camaraderie among fellow PCA ladies.

AZPCA Region Event Cancelation Policies & Event Organizer Responsibilities
Event Cancellation Policy
Most of our events have attendance limits, and they fill up quickly. Also, we often have waiting lists for those wishing to attend but do not have a secured attendance spot. Increasingly, attendees sign up and simply do not show up for the event without canceling in advance. This behavior impacts the event registrar/organizer, the event facility, and those on the waiting list wanting to attend but cannot. This behavior demonstrates a lack of common courtesy, requiring it to be addressed proactively. On the first occurrence a warning will be issued, and on the second occurrence privileges to attend future events may be impacted. Also, any registration fees for paid events will be forfeited without recourse since the club is charged regardless. The cancelation policy requires cancelation of your registration on MSR for paid or unpaid events a minimum of 7 days prior to the event date, unless there are serious and extenuating emergency circumstances as assessed by the event registrar/organizer. Most importantly, please be courteous to your fellow members so that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy events.
Event Organizer Responsibilities
Event organizers are required to send out a reminder approximately 9 days in advance of any event reminding registrants of the event and summarizing their responsibilities by including the following language:

Please note that whether or not there is a registration fee for this event, the restaurant is expecting a certain number of attendees we provide to them in advance and incur cost accordingly If you need to cancel please do so at least one week prior to the event date (being a no-show without notice is rude to other members who wish to attend, the restaurant and to the event organizer). Additionally, if there is a fee or prepayment associated with the event, it will be forfeited if cancelled less than 7 days before the event. Thank you!”

Reimbursement & Stipend Policy for AZPCA HPDE Events:
1. Reimbursement is provided to 5 key workers / volunteers for actual round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts), and if applicable, $120/night stipend for lodging/ incidentals. If it is not an overnight event and/or a requirement, then spend is reduced to $40. Key workers are volunteers that are attending the event solely to work the event but not participate in the event. Examples could be: Grid worker(s), Safety inspector(s), Timing and Scoring Chair, Safety Chair, Event Chair, CDI. Excludes: Corner workers/flaggers.
2. A corner worker/flagger is offered a $100 stipend or a $175 MSR credit for a future HPDE event, by choice of the flagger.
3. Other non-critical volunteer positions are provided a lunch (lunch will either paid for individually or provided as part of event to all participants).
4. The Event Organizer is reimbursed for fuel costs related to event planning/execution and round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts and log).
5. Continue to offer discounted registration fees for approved AZPCA Instructors.

Danielle’s Column - Nobody asked me BUT...

Does this phrase ring a bell? If you’re a newspaper reader of a certain age, it will. Because it’s the title line for a syndicated sports column written for many years by Jimmy Cannon, at one time the highest-paid sports columnist in the country.
Jimmy’s long gone. But I feel a kinship today. Because I’m going to wade into a subject near and dear to me, whether you like it or not. Here goes.
The subject is car shows. And what’s happening, or not happening, to the event.
I used to love car shows. The glitz, the noise, the craziness. The breathless thrill for all things automotive. The seemingly endless product displays, showing past, current and future iterations. The lazy Susan platforms that were reserved for the latest visions, graced by sweet young things, doing their best to repeat their scripts. The endless accessory booths. I’d come home toting a bag, full to the brim, with catalogs, brochures, data sheets.
And the really big shtick. Remember, not too long ago? The nutcase product reveals – literally – acrobatic performances, stormtroopers promoting Star Wars cars, brewing a cup of tea from a hydrogen car’s water exhaust, “breaking through” by driving a vehicle through a glass wall. Today, if the Denver show is any reflection, we continue to suffer from incredibly shrinking floor space, and a mundane collection of SUVs and pick-ups. This year, the show was down to three days. And press “day” was two hours, from 8 am to 10 am, when the show opened to the public. With few manufacturer reps in sight, replaced by dealer sales people. What happened to the fun? Yes, yes, I know. From the comfort of your home, today you can, in a few clicks, read up on virtually every model in current or near-term planned production. And you can view them from every angle, get transported inside, “build” your own personalized version.
But, while that process is very illuminating, it doesn’t exactly mimic the experience of seeing the vehicle in the flesh, sitting in it, driving it. It’s like buying clothes on-line. Will they actually fit? There’s only one way to find out.
So … what to do. Here’s a revolutionary idea; we all know that manufacturers spec their products directly against their competition. Ok, how about flipping the space inside out, and assembling product by type, not manufacturer? That way, the consumer can comparison shop by just visiting a section of the show floor. In the flesh. It’s something no dealer, no vehicle showroom, no website can do.
And … how about a section for race cars? Indy. Prototype. NASCAR. Baja. SCCA. Isn’t there a certain symbiotic relationship here? Or, shouldn’t there be? Especially since manufacturers are all involved in these series, in one way or another. And they do do it to promote their consumer vehicles. And I’m not talking about aftermarket tuners. And … what about making room for enthusiast clubs? PCA, BMWCCA, FCA and so forth? Here’s a crazy idea; invite the clubs in to showcase their wares … and their membership. Look at it this way; it seems like every village surrounding big cities is now hosting a Cars and Coffee, and attracting hundreds of cars and thousands of visitors, every weekend. Why not jump on that bandwagon? Invite them it! Then, maybe Porsche and BMW and Ferrari and other OEMs will actually sit up, take notice, support their clubs and rent some floor space … and not leave it to their dealers, hit or miss.
Danielle’s Column - Nobody asked me BUT...
It’s really too bad. Because, when you scratch the surface, you realize that, behind today’s vehicles, lies an army of product planners that are just like us, loving their vehicles to the core.
For us journos, Kelley Enright had a light bulb idea. She’s Central Region Communications Manager for Stellantis and, leading up to the Denver show, she assembled the following cadre of experts – the Vice President and Head of Jeep Global Design, the Vice President and Head of Interior Design and the Vice President and Head of Color and Materials.
No, they didn’t come to the show. But they all participated in a first, a webcast covering the new Jeep Cherokee. And it was fascinating to hear the parental views of a brand-new offering. The familial visual cues, the trade-offs between ultimate aero and rugged styling, the improved utility, the new tech. They call it FALD – full array local driving. Oh, and as a sign of the times, Kelley noted the vehicle is powered by a 1.6-liter turbo hybrid, delivering a 500-mi range. Are they proud parents? You bet they are.
Well then, where’s the disconnect? What’s so difficult, when it comes to show time? Is it inertia? Boredom? Cost? All I know is that, if the trend in car shows continues, the events will die a slow death. They’re already gasping. And, despite the enthusiasm of the product planners, and nerds like us, that will be a major shame. It doesn’t have to be this way.

February set a strong tone for the year, with 522 cars sold for $47.9m, marking a 13% increase in unit volume and a 31% jump in dollar volume year over year, all while holding a healthy 75% sell-through rate. March continued that trend. With the same 75% sell-through rate, the market expanded as 687 Porsches crossed the block for a total of $78.1m, representing a 12% increase in units and a 36% surge in dollar volume compared to last March. Perhaps more telling is the step up from February to March this year, with unit volume increasing by 165 cars and dollar volume jumping over $30m, signaling strong momentum as we head deeper into the spring market.
Last month we discussed Florida Car Week, which spanned the end of February and the beginning of March, with record after record set at the very top of the market. While the remainder of March didn’t quite reach those same heights, the top end remained strong. Singer’s Classic Study 911s are now firmly back above the $1m mark, with the “Fillmore” commission, a gorgeous example finished in Pure Gunmetal over Turmeric, hammering at $1,275,000. We also saw another twelve-month online high for the 991.2 GT2 RS, as a Paintto-Sample Cobalt Blue Metallic example with just 571 miles sold for $660,000. 911 S/Ts, on the other hand, appeared to soften slightly, with both examples to cross the block trading below the $648,000 floor we had seen over the prior twelve months.
As you know, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the Boxster and Cayman market as Porsche has sunset the 718, with any potential ICE replacement still a few years out, if it comes at all. The Boxster GTS 4.0 market took a clear step up this month with back-to-back twelve-month highs. A 1,500-mile example sold for $109,000, followed shortly after by a 271-mile car bringing $112,000 after failing to sell at that same number back in February. The rest of the mid-engined lineup appeared largely flat, including the Cayman GT4 RS, which has been trending downward for some time. That said, we did see one standout, a Paintto-Sample Black Olive example with 2,400 miles and all the right options, which became the first online auction result to exceed $200,000 since September of last year.
One standout worth calling out from the broader Boxster market was a 2008 Boxster S Limited Edition 6-Speed, finished in Orange over Black leather and Alcantara, showing 14,000 miles. One of just 250 units produced, this was a well-kept example with recent service and strong presentation. Coming into the sale, twelve-month comps averaged $44,400, with a prior high of $48,000 for a 1,800-mile car, albeit in Alaska. Despite having more miles, this one reset the market, selling at a final bid of $49,999. A strong result, and one that suggests there’s still upside in the right limited-run Boxsters when they check the right boxes.
Looking at the air-cooled market, we saw a surprising number of 993 Carrera S examples cross the block. Seven in total, with all but one finding new homes, averaging $242,600, and all but one clearing the $200,000 mark. Leading the way was a 15,000-mile 1998 example finished in Arctic Silver Metallic over Black leather. An excellent car throughout, it set a new twelve-month high at a final bid of $275,000 after failing to sell in February at $242,000. Showing just 11,000 miles, it was the lowest mileage example we’ve seen by a wide margin and presented accordingly, hammering at a final bid of $172,000.
The Stuttgart Market Letter
With strong results across multiple segments and momentum building through the first quarter, all eyes now turn to April. Headlining the month is Broad Arrow Auctions’ Air|Water all-Porsche sale, which has quickly become one of the more anticipated single-marque events on the calendar. If the first three months of the year are any indication, expect more of the same, strong results, competitive bidding, and a market that continues to show depth across both modern and vintage offerings.

What’s happening in the Porsche Market Place?
The 997.2 GT3 RS made its public debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show before reaching showrooms in early 2010 and quickly established itself as one of the most capable road-going 911s of its era. Powered by a 3.8 -liter naturally aspirated flat-six producing 450 horsepower and paired exclusively with a six-speed manual, it was widely praised for achieving a 7:18 lap time at the Nürburgring at launch. Compared to the standard 997.2 GT3, the RS featured a wider rear track, lower weight, and increased aerodynamic downforce, sharpening its focus as a track weapon.
This 2011 911 GT3 RS was finished in Carrara White over a Black leather and Alcantara interior and showed 17,000 miles. It was well optioned with PCCB brakes, Front Axle Lift, Full Leather Interior, Sport Chrono Plus, and additional equipment, bringing the original MSRP to $158,210. The car was fitted with a Shark Werks exhaust and was supported by a clean CarFax, solid service history, a DME report, and plenty of detailed photos in the gallery.
Over the past twelve months, 997.2 GT3 RS values have averaged $391,600, with a low of $294,997 and a high of $575,000. We recently saw an 11,000-mile example sell for $420,997, which made it a bit surprising that the seller of our Spotlight Car chose not to accept a $435,000 final bid.

Porsche Design Unveils the Chronograph 1
– PCA Member Edition
Porsche Design honors the 70th anniversary of the Porsche Club of America with a new edition of the Chronograph 1. Exclusively made for a special community, PCA members now have the opportunity to customize Porsche Design’s most iconic timepiece that was originally designed by F. A. Porsche in 1972.
Creating a special sense of community amongst members, this new timepiece features the PCA logo and “PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA” lettering, and optionally a personalized club region name stated on the case back. The made-to-order watch will not only come with a titanium bracelet, but also two sportive textile straps in vibrant Club Blau, one featuring the PCA logo and the other the PCA 70Y anniversary logo.

PCA has 20 registries for those super enthusiastic about their Porsche model
The PCA Registry program was established in 1995 to encourage closer relationships within Porsche model owners in PCA. The program allows PCA members to network with others in their specific area of interest. Sharing of information fosters restoration and maintenance of members’ automobiles. A registry can potentially provide a new resource for historical displays at Parades and other PCA events, along with information for articles in Porsche Panorama. Don’t see a registry for your Porsche? We are also looking for individuals who are interested in starting a registry for a model that doesn’t have an existing registry.
