A Chairde, On behalf of the Friends of Limerick Greyhound Stadium group, we would like to welcome all of you to this year’s Irish St. Leger final night, the likes of which has never been experienced in the history of this Classic due to COVID 19 restrictions. The final will be seen, in the stadium, by those who are fortunate enough to have a runner. However the full race programme will be streamed live on Talking Dogs (grireland.ie/talkingdogs) This year’s Leger has been sponsored by you, friends and supporters of greyhound racing in Limerick. We want to thank each and every one of you who have contributed to ensure this classic retains its prestigious standing in the greyhound calendar. We would like to particularly recognise the work members of the group, past and present, have made towards the funding of this major event at our local track. The results have been phenomenal and have far outstripped expectations. Your response to our initiative has been extraordinary and shows in no small way that greyhound racing is alive and well in Limerick. The crème de la crème of open class greyhounds in the country have been involved here in Limerick over the past number of weeks with the winner receiving a purse of €30,000. All contributions made to the fund have been matched € for € by Greyhound Racing Ireland,
with the manner in which these funds are spent being at the discretion of the Friends of Limerick. We want to thank both the Rásaíocht Con Éireann and Limerick Greyhound Stadium for their continued support and co-operation. The group was set up to secure funding, for a two year period, for the Irish St Leger at a time when the industry was having grave difficulty securing sponsorship for events due to unfair adverse publicity in the media. CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME A Chairde, Welcome owners and trainers to the Final of the 2020 Irish St. Leger sponsored by the Friends of Limerick Greyhound Stadium. While these are indeed strange times and patrons will be disappointed that they will not join the finalists tonight to witness the winner being crowned, I am sure that you all will agree that we are extremely fortunate that we are able to continue racing, albeit “behind closed doors”. The response to the decision to stream the live action from Limerick Greyhound Stadium on Talking Dogs has been overwhelmingly positive. This combined with the nightly social media coverage has allowed fans to follow and enjoy the action in real time. I want to take this opportunity to once again salute and thank The Friends of Limerick Greyhound Stadium for their continued sponsorship. This is the second year of their sponsorship commitment and is deeply appreciated by all involved in the sport. This year has been a financially challenging one as we race behind closed doors without the benefit of our regular revenue streams, and therefore I would like to thank the Government, Minister McConalogue and the Department for Agriculture, Food and the Marine for their commitment to the industry and the confirmation that the Horse and Greyhound Fund will receive additional funding for 2021. A look back at the action! round by round recap KINGDOM SERVES UP A TREAT IN ST. LEGER OPENER – Saturday 31st October 2020
It was an eventful Halloween night in Limerick as the opening round of the 2020 Friends of Limerick Irish St. Leger got underway and of the twelve heats on offer, there were plenty of thrills and spills. Ballymac Wild was installed the outright favourite earlier in the week for Leger glory but it was another Liam Dowling star in the shape of Ballymac Kingdom who posted the fastest of the twelve heats as he flew home to land heat two. It was the first of two winners for the Tralee handler and another trainer to land multiple heats was Graham Holland who notched a treble on the night.
KINGDOM HEADS A DOWLING DOUBLE
Ballymac Kingdom is more accustomed to six bend racing but he showed he is just as effective over four bends as he blew the field away to land heat two for Liam Dowling. The 2020 Corn Cuchulainn winner broke well wearing the black jacket and followed Auzerre into the opening corner. The writing was already on the wall early for Auxerre though as Ballymac Kingdom had the inside line and stuck to the paintwork to lead into the back straight. The son of Definite Opinion - Coolavanny Angie quickly opened a two length advantage at this point but it was only a matter of time before Ballymac Kingdom hit top gear. Absolutely flying off the final turn, Liam Dowling’s charge soon established an unassailable lead late on and he was six and a half lengths clear at the lollipop. The time was a brilliant 29.57 .20s with Auxerre claiming second, while Amazing Alice overcame a troublesome outing to take third.
TAS DOUBLES UP
Ballymac Tas was a beaten favourite in the final of the 2019 Con & Annie Kirby at Limerick and she was back for more in heat twelve as she ran out a good winner to complete a double for Liam Dowling. Perfectly housed in red, Ballymac Tas was swiftly into stride early on as Outnumbered also came away well to dispute the lead into the opening corner. The inside line once again proved crucial and Ballymac Tas used this to her advantage to take a two length lead into the back straight from an improving Outnumbered in second, with Meenagh Miracle now in third. It was as you were for the remainder of the contest as Ballymac Tas pulled clear in the closing stages to claim a length and a half victory. Outnumbered stayed on for second as Meenagh Miracle grabbed third. The time was a smart 30.04 .20s.
HOLLAND TREBLE
Newinn Session (Laughil Duke - Coolavanny Pearl) was expected to take all of the beating in heat seven and he justified his tag as one of market leaders for outright glory with a straight forward victory. Off to a slick start from trap one, Newinn Session moved slightly right early on and despite brushing the youngster Knockboy Flight, this didn’t stop Newinn Session from taking the ascendancy approaching the opening corner. It was soon business as usual for Simon Taylor’s talented black as he opened a seven length lead down the back straight from the improving Knockboy Flight in second. It was as you were in the closing stages as Newinn Session stayed on well to record a six length win for trainer, Graham Holland. Knockboy Flight ran an absolute cracker in second place as Ballygibba Spray took third. The clock returned 29.67 .20s.
SLICK FOX
Rathcoole Fox won his tune up race in off the pace fashion last week but he was razor sharp at traps last night as he flew to a comfortable win.

Fastest into stride from trap three, Rathcoole Fox flew into the opening turn as Excess Power followed in second. Quickly stretching clear off the second turn, the son of Top Honcho - Ballydoyle Honey skipped to a virtual solo thereafter as he stayed on with real gusty to record a comprehensive six and a half length win. The time for the Parachute syndicate owned black was a smart 29.81 .20s. Springwood Vardy came through for second as the 2019 reigning champ Ballymac Anton took third.
FEUDAL SHOWS SPIRIT
The treble for Holland was completed in heat eleven as Feudal Spirit was all out to hold off the flying finish of Magical Jasper. Owned by Larry O’Rourke, Feudal Spirit is many people's idea of this year’s Leger winner and he was fastest into stride at trap rise to lead into the opening corner. Moving off the first bend slightly from trap one, the son of Droopys Jets - Kilara Cher had Magical Jasper breathing down his neck and if anything, Patrick Guilfoyle’s charge was showing the superior gears approaching the penultimate bend. However, Feudal Spirit showed all of his toughness and despite coming under late pressure again from the former, Feudal Spirit held firm to record a short head win. The time was 30.34 .20s.
MAESTRO UPSETS DON
The purple patch continued for Michael Corr in heat number six as Meenagh Maestro saw off the challenge of Oran Don to make the long journey to Limerick worthwhile. Oran Don in trap four broke marginally in front of Meenagh Maestro (Farloe Rumble - Rios Girl) in two but drifting wide at the opening corner, Meenagh Maestro quickly swept to the front to take a lead of a couple of lengths into the back straight. From here, Maestro set a fine gallop throughout and although the eye-catching Priceless Jet was showing devastating pace down the back straight, he was forced to check and Meenagh Maestro came home a length and a half clear of Oran Don in second, with Priceless Jet back in third. The time was 29.97 .20s.
EPIC WIN
There was an upset in heat number five as the ante-post favourite Ballymac Wild got turned over at the expense of Epic Hero (Droopys Jet - Ravenna). Trained by Thomas O’Donovan, Epic Hero was fastest into stride from trap two and darted straight to the rail as Airmount Nando emerged as the biggest threat approaching the opening corner. Ballymac Wild meanwhile, missed the kick, had his stride interrupted off the second turn and as a result was forced to check. Epic Hero and Airmount Nando were having quite the battle down the back straight however and Airmount showed narrowly in front approaching the penultimate bend. Epic Hero wasn’t done yet though, and the inside line proved crucial as he took back control heading into the home straight. Staying on well thereafter, Epic Hero saw off the challenge to cross the line two and a half lengths clear of Airmount Nando, as Jaytee Japan flew home in third. The time was 29.99 .20s.
BLASTOFF SHOOTS FIRST
It certainly was a case of blast off in the opening heat of the night as Blastoff Fire (Skywalker Luke - Blastoff Fizz) produced a strong running display to get his Classic hunt off to a flier for owner Philip Buckley. It was Patterdale Greg who showed first from trap three and he proceeded to dictate the pace around the opening corner. Blastoff Fire however, despite missing the kick from red, stuck tight to the rails and found himself with the lead entering the back straight as Massachusetts followed
in second. A couple of lengths separating the duo, it quickly became a two dog affair but Blastoff Fire stayed on well to fend off the challenge of Massachusetts by half a length, in a winning time of 30.05 .20s.
THUNDER ARRIVES LATE
Congress Thunder ran a cracker last week behind Black Parachute in a warm up race for the Leger and that obviously held him in good stead as he landed heat three for Paul Hennessy. Owned by Paul Hynes, Congress Thunder came away fluently from trap two but occupied second into the opening bend as Gortkelly Nestor showed the superior early boot to lead from trap five. Razldazl Monarch was also in contention and took over at the penultimate bend after a buckle with Gortkelly Nestor who found space at a premium. Congress Thunder wasn't done yet however, and lurking menacingly throughout, the son of Droopys Nidge - Balinakill Trish showed excellent pace to take control in the closing stages as he stormed past Razldazl Monarch to claim a length victory. The time was 30.17 .20s.
LAUREL LANDS MESSY AFFAIR
Heat eight was a very messy affair indeed as both fancied runners, Great Name That and Black Parachute both endured troublesome passages. It was Wicket Keeper who sprung out in front from trap five to lead early on from Black Parachute in second. Great Name That meanwhile, after a tardy start, was flying up the rails but the corner came a little too quick as he caught the back end of Black Parachute and trouble ensued thereafter. More traffic off the second bend now left Woodbrook Laurel (Laughil Blake - Kilbarry Sharpe), who trailed the field early on, swooped to the front and Phil Collins’ greyhound led around the penultimate bend. Sticking to his guns well close home, Woodbrook Laurel crossed the line over three lengths clear of Black Parachute, who ran a big race to finish second, with Witches Rio taking third. The time was understandable given the trouble, 30.60 .20s.
STRONG POPEYE
Minglers Popeye followed up a smart win last time out in Waterford with another solid performance in heat nine. Out like a bullet from trap three, Minglers Popeye showed terrific early pace to lead Storys Goal into the opening corner. Droopys Wyatt followed in third but had plenty on his plate as Minglers Popeye opened a six length lead down the back straight. ‘Wyatt’ did make some fast progress approaching the penultimate bend however and he looked a formidable challenger with the winning line now in sight. Minglers Popeye was a game as a fox though, and the son of Sparta Maestro - Minglers Suarez kept on well to record a two length win. The time was 29.96 .20s.
UNLOCK HAS THE KEY
Unlock Unlock is firmly recognised as one of the fastest females in training and she showed all of her class to land heat ten. Only moderately away from trap five, Unlock Unlock (Droopys Sydney - Toms Delight) had to make way for Bargain Devil who dictated the pace into the opening corner. Steering a wide route throughout, Brenfan Matthews’ flying machine checked slightly at the opening turn but quickly got back into contention upon entrance to the back straight. Dipping and weaving in behind, Unlock Unlock swept to the front rounding the bottom two corners and came home as you;d expect in the closing stages of the contest. Three lengths clear of Bargain Devil in second, the time was 30.18 .20s.
SESSION AND ALICE STAR IN SECOND ROUND – Saturday 7th November 2020
After some sparkling displays in the opening round of the Friends of Limerick Irish St. Leger last week at Limerick Greyhound Stadium, the torch paper well and truly caught fire last night with a number of excep-
tional performances. All eyes were drawn to heat two on the night as last week’s three leading greyhounds in Ballymac Kingdom, Newinn Session and Rathcoole Fox were all pencilled in to go head to head in what promised to be a fascinating encounter. Ballymac Kingdom clocked the fastest opening round time of 29.57 .20s but being primarily known as a six bend greyhound, doubts remained on whether he could show the same type of early gears when presented with opposition of the quality of Newinn Session. That question was very much answered last night as despite eventually chasing home Newinn Session, Liam Dowling’s powerhouse was arguably just as impressive with the early speed he showed on the run to the opening corner. Rather surprisingly, it was Nidge who showed first from trap one and next to follow was Newinn Session who had missed the kick from trap two. Next in line was the black jacket of Ballymac Kingdom and he proceeded to show a sizzling turn of speed to challenge his rivals on the approach to the opening corner. However, the corner came just too soon for the blue as Nidge drifted off the rail into Newinn Session who, through no fault of his own, clipped Ballymac Kingdom which temporarily halted his progress. Thus, a determined Newinn Session shot clear and soon opened a six length lead as he galloped out majestically down the back straight. Now firmly in control, Newinn Session was never going to be caught and despite Ballymac Kingdom eating into his lead in the closing stages of the event, Simon Taylor’s black still had three and a half lengths in hand come the winning line. Rathcoole Fox ran a fine race after a stumbling start to stay on strong and book his spot in next week’s quarter finals. The clock, considering the early bumping, returned a brilliant 29.60.
ALICE WAS AMAZING
Amazing Alice (Aero Majestic - Droopys Coast) ran a scorcher in her opening round heat to overcome adversary on more than one occasion and Patrick Guilfoyle’s Irish Cesarewitch runner-up produced a stunning performance to land heat six. From a level break, Amazing Alice and Woodbrook Laurel disputed for the early supremacy but it was the black jacket of Amazing Alice who swept across to the rail to run a brilliant bend and take a three length lead into the back. Traffic problems on the outside, Feudal Spirit followed ‘Alice’ into the back straight but in truth, this heat was already put to bed as the leader is a strong 600 yard bitch. Making little inroads into the lead, Feudal Spirit had to settle for second place as Amazing Alice powered to the front and crossed the line four lengths clear. The time was a red-hot 29.65. Cash Ready claimed the final qualifying position, back in third.
AMAZING ANTON MAKES ALL
Heat five was another intriguing contest with some serious greyhounds involved, all boasting strong outright claims of landing gold. A five dog race with the absence No Green Dye in trap four, the race was expected to be dominated by the likes of Epic Hero, Priceless Jet and Witches Ethiopia early on but it was the 2019 Leger champ, Ballymac Anton who was paw perfect at traps and the evergreen fawn blazed from trap three to take a clear lead approaching the opening corner. Epic Hero was next to follow from trap five with Priceless Jet, who was edging inwards from stripes, back in third. The latter duo shipping a bump at this point, Ballymac Anton soon opened a three length lead upon entrance to the back straight and tracking expertly thereafter, Liam Dowling’s fantastic son of Ballymac Best - Coolavanny Angie maintained a strong gallop all the way to the line. Three lengths clear at the lollipop, Epic Hero kept on well for second as Priceless Jet claimed third. The time was an excellent 29.72.
PARACHUTE SEALS VICTORY
It was a quick-fire double for trainer Graham Holland as in heat four,
Black Parachute led from trap to line to record a twelfth career victory. Having been on the receiving end of a bumpy ride i me straight, Black Parachute stormed across the line to account for a two and a half length victory over Blastoff Fire as he was forced to settle for second. Magical Jasper ran another brilliant race for Patrick Guilfoyle to take third and the time returned a fast 29.75.
DON DELIVERS
One of the most professional trackers in the Country is that of the Marie Gilbert trained Oran Don and he landed the second heat of the night with a terrific front running performance. Back wearing his favoured striped jacket, Oran Don (Over Limit - Laughil Niamh) was out like a rocket at trap rise and he had already opened a clear advantage as he stormed into the opening corner. Steering a wide course throughout, Oran Don extended his lead entering the back straight and this was all over as a contest with his rivals now running simply for qualification. Striding out brilliantly between the bottom two corners, Oran Don was a dog on a mission and he wasn't for catching as he came home four lengths clear of Outnumbered, who ran a cracking race in second. The time for the Elliot Whyte and Johnny Crehan owned tracker was a slick 29.86 as Springwood Vardy grabbed the third qualifying position.
WILD BOUNCES BACK
After a far from straight forward return to the racing circuit last week, Ballymac Wild was expected to bounce back to winning ways in the opening heat of the night which was a four dog affair after the withdrawals of both Droopys Wyatt and Jacks Solution. Running from a favourable draw in trap two, Ballymac Wild was sluggish into stride as Razldazl Monarch pinged the lids from trap four to hold the advantage heading into the opening corner. Showing a nice turn of early up the inside however, Ballymac Wild held his inside line and as Razldazl Monarch steered a middle course, Liam Dowling’s star tracker railed like a cat to now take control rounding the opening turn. Quickly opening a two length lead down the back straight, the most eye-catching greyhound came in the form of Own Spice who was rapidly improved into second and now represented a huge threat to the jolly with two hundred yards to go. Ballymac Wild was going about his business well however, and despite Own Spice chasing hard in second, the son of Vulturi - Ballymac Breeze was gutsy out in front and duly crossed the line two lengths clear to open his Leger account. The time was a fast 29.95 as Razldazl Monarch just held on to grab the third qualifying position.
POPEYE STAYS STRONG
Minglers Popeye was electric in the opening round as he pinged the lids to make all and Eddie Moore’s charge produced another solid performance to land heat seven. Indeed, Eddie Moore indicated he would have loved more of the same in terms of the second round trap draw and his wish was granted when Minglers Popeye was handed a lovely berth in trap two. Breaking smartly, the son of Sparta Maestro - Minglers Suarez soon led as he paced into the opening corner with Ardfert Rooster his nearest challenger out in six. Taking a narrow advantage into the back straight, Knockboy Flight and the improving Meenagh Maestro emerged as the biggest threats to the leader and they were stalking menacingly entering the penultimate bend. However, try as they might, Minglers Popeye was proving a tough nut to crack in front and found a second wind in the closing stages of the event. Pulling clear to notch a length and a half victory, Minglers Popeye stopped the clock in a slick 30.01. Meenagh Maestro ran a fine race in second as Knockboy Flight secured his qualifying position back in third.
MEENAGH LANDS MESSY AFFAIR
The final heat of the night was a messy affair by anyone’s standards but Michael Corr’s Meenagh Miracle took full advantage to eventually come
home on her lonesome. Trapping well from trap five, Meenagh Miracle had Newinn Hero and the improving Airmount Nando for company on the run to the opening bend with the latter duo showing the superior early boot to narrowly show in front. However, space was very much at a premium and Great Name That, like last week, found the opening turn a little too sharp and as a result impeded several runners. Meenagh Miracle was to be the beneficiary of the traffic as she showed brilliant courage to squeeze through the gap and lead Massachusetts into the back straight. Little to separate the duo, it was Congress Thunder in third who was eating up the ground in behind and he looked a serious contender approaching the penultimate turn. Meenagh Miracle shut the door at this point however, resulting in further trouble and eventually the daughter of Farloe Rumble - Rios Girl cantered to a nine length victory. Congress Thunder gathered himself together to take the runner-up spot and Newinn Hero claimed third. The time was 30.29.
WILD HEADS A DOWLING MASTERCLASS IN QUARTERS – Saturday 14th November 2020
The eagerly anticipated quarter finals of the Friends of Limerick Irish St. Leger took centre stage last night at Limerick Greyhound Stadium and although Ballymac Wild produced a sensational display, it was his owner Liam Dowling who stole the show in landing two of the four heats and guiding all three of his runners into next week’s semi finals. Saturday 14th November 2020. Despite winning his second round heat in what could be described as workmanlike fashion last week, the signs were there that Ballymac Wild was on the cusp of a return to the type of form which saw him light up Shelbourne Park earlier in the year. Drawn in what was red-hot opening quarter final, much would depend on whether Ballymac Wild could clear the likes of Epic Hero and Amazing Alice in the opening yards but these questions were put to bed in emphatic fashion as Liam Dowlings star pinged the lids from trap three to leave his rivals for dust. Epic Hero was next best in second as he too broke smartly from trap one, while Amazing Alice made an instant dart for the rail to tuck in behind in third. Opening a length advantage upon entrance to the back straight, Ballymac Wild soon doubled his lead as he stretched clear of Epic Hero and was in full flow heading into the penultimate corner, clocking a majestic 17.28 split time in the process. It was already clear that Ballymac Wild was producing something special out in front but the son of Vulturi - Ballymac Breeze stepped it up a further gear rounding the bottom two bends and he stormed up the Limerick straight to cross the line over three lengths better off. Epic Hero ran a fine race in behind to take second, while Amazing Alice was finishing at speed to book her spot in next week’s semi finals. The time, as expected, was a stunning 29.40 and Ballymac Wild is now firmly in the Classic hunt.
DON DELIVERS AS SESSION CRASHES OUT
The second quarter final was fitting of a Leger final in itself with many of the Country’s fastest greyhounds penned in together. Graham Holland was triple handed in the heat but there was to be an upset on the cards as Oran Don followed up his impressive second round win with a thoroughly professional display. Graham Holland went into the quarter final triple handed with Newinn Session, Feudal Spirit and Rathcoole Fox all representing the Classic winning kennel but as we’ve seen on numerous occasions in this scenario, his kennel companions found themselves getting tangled up throughout the race which ultimately ended in elimination for all three. Much would be decided in the opening fifty yards and a level break saw Feudal Spirit emerge from the pack to lead with Oran Don steering a wide course
out in six. Newinn Session was making rapid progress however and he showed a nose in front as the corner approached. At this point, Feudal Spirit and Newinn Session came together and although Newinn Session gathered himself well to sweep the corner, Feudal Spirit never recovered as further trouble saw his Classic hunt come to an end. Heading into the back straight and Oran Don had breezed around the outside and was going about his business in brilliant style, coursing the hare and benefiting from having the freedom of Limerick out wide. Neck and neck with Newinn Session out in front, the improving Rathcoole Fox was now screaming for racing room up the inside, while Priceless Jet was showing the type of back straight pace reminiscent of his opening round exploits. With space very much at a premium, a packed penultimate corner saw Oran Don sweep the bend to go clear and continue his challenge with Newinn Session now under pressure from Priceless Jet, who was absolutely flying in second place. The winning line now well in sight, Oran Don was still dictating the pace and despite a late drive from a flying Priceless Jet, Oran Don held on by half a length to gallop into next week’s semi finals. Meenagh Miracle, who looked dead and buried down the back straight, came with a wet sail in the latter stages to fly past Newinn Session and claim the final qualifying position in third. The time was 29.96.

If the second quarter final was hard to put into words, the third quarter final was anything but as Outnumbered led from trap to line to march into next week’s semi final. A greyhound with clear ability, the prior rounds for Outnumbered would be best described as satisfactory heading into last night quarter finals but it does take some time to get to grips with the Limerick circuit and the O’Neills Dog Food Open Puppy finalist put it all together last night. Trained by Mark O’Donovan, Outnumbered had a lovely draw on the fence and he absolutely flew from traps to take a comfortable lead into the opening corner. Meanwhile, trouble ensued in behind as Congress Thunder failed to turn at the opening corner which caused major traffic and Cash Ready nipped around to follow the leader into the back straight. This also played into the hands of the reigning champ Ballymac Anton, who after a poor start, used all of his know how to slip up the inside and sit third heading into the back straight. Setting a strong gallop in front, Outnumbered was firmly in control heading into the penultimate corner as Ballymac Anton was now in full flow and Liam Dowling’s fawn had improved into second at the crown of the penultimate turn. Now looking a real threat, Ballymac Anton had another victory in his sights. However, Outnumbered is a tough nut to crack whilst on the bunny and the son of Droopys Nidge - Coolavanny Royce had a length to spare at the winning line. Ballymac Anton ran a cracker to land second, while Cash Ready booked his spot in third. The time for Outnumbered was a slick 29.73.

In what was proving to be a fruitful night for the ‘Ballymac’ kennels, Ballymac Kingdom landed the fourth quarter final with an off the pace masterclass. A five dog affair with the absence of Meenagh Maestro in trap one, it was Minglers Popeye who shot out in front from trap four to dictate the pace approaching the opening corner with Newinn Hero showing some fine early dash from six to follow the early leader. Ballymac Kingdom meanwhile, missed his break and shipped quite a hefty bump from Black Parachute, who had also not broken as fluently as expected. Sweeping the opening corner, Minglers Popeye continued to set a good gallop out in front and he held a one length advantage over Newinn Hero in second. The make-up of the race was to change at the penultimate bed however, as Newinn Hero nipped up the inside to narrowly lead but at this point, Ballymac Kingdom was winding up his challenge by making swift inroads back in third and now looked a serious threat to all. The winning line now in sight, Newinn Hero still held the initiative but it was only a matter of time and Ballymac Kingdom stormed around the outside to breeze past Newinn Hero and

With the added incentive of being able to view Limerick’s Irish St. Leger semi final card via Talking Dogs last night, viewers were treated to two fantastic semi final performances which saw Ballymac Wild steal the show for the second week running as he produced another thoroughly impressive display. Saturday 21st November 2020 Ahead of the opening semi final of the night, last week's brilliant 29.40 performance from Ballymac Wild outlined that Liam Dowling’s Irish Derby finalist was certainly back to his very best form and firmly in the lead in terms of outright St. Leger glory. In what was a red-hot opening semi final contest, Ballymac Wild was perfectly housed in the red jacket and like last week, he was paw perfect at traprise to leave his rivals for dust in the opening yards. Next best was Meenagh Miracle who trapped brilliantly from trap five and the duo entered the opening corner with plenty of daylight intact over the rest of the field. Amazing Alice occupied the final qualifying position early on after overcoming a slight bump at trap-rise from the rail-seeking Ballymac Kingdom. Entering the back straight and it soon became apparent that Ballymac Wild and Meenagh Miracle had their positions in next week’s decider all but sealed as the duo battled it out for the semi final spoils. Ballymac Wild continued to set a ferocious gallop midway down the back straight but Michael Corr’s brilliant bitch was matching him stride for stride as the penultimate bend now approached with only a length to separate the duo. Stopping the third bend split clock at 17.28, Ballymac Wild tracked expertly around the bottom two bends to maintain control over Meenagh Miracle, although the former was now beginning to step it up a notch off the final turn. Stretching clear in the final fifty yards, Ballymac Wild stormed over the line to record an extending three length victory. Meenagh Miracle ran an absolute corker to claim second and any fears that this bitch would run out of puff can certainly have a line drawn across them and she finished another three lengths clear of Amazing Alice in third. The time was a very fast 29.43.
CASH CAUSES UPSET
There was a huge upset on the cards in the second semi final of the night as Cash Ready (Crash - Billis Weasel) tore up the script to land the spoils and seal a place in next week’s feature event. Most of the early running in this contest was expected to come from the inside runners of Epic Hero and Outnumbered but as the hare approached, it was the Denis Fitzgerald trained Cash Ready who was on the receiving end of a ping break from trap three to lead his rivals into the opening corner. Newinn Hero and Oran Don were next to follow and while the former ran into trouble, Oran Don ran a fine opening bend to swoop around the outside and chase the early leader, with Epic Hero also holding his inside line and improving all the time.
EPIC MAKES PROGRESS
Heading into the back straight and Cash Ready held a four length lead but that was short lived as Epic Hero soon sliced that advantage in half and after showing a devastating turn of foot down the back straight to stretch clear of Oran Don in third, Epic Hero now sat just two lengths adrift of Cash Ready rounding the penultimate turn. However, Cash Ready has shown throughout his Leger stint that he is as tough as old boots and determined to get the win, the Cash-Ready syndicate owned brindle held off the persistent challenge of Epic Hero to claim a one length success. The time was a smart 29.68. The final qualifier was Oran Don who had to fend off the late challenge of Ballymac Anton to seal his spot, a further six and a half lengths back in third.

HOW TO REHOME YOUR
RETIRED RACING GREYHOUND Share some key information to help us match your greyhound to their new home, the more quality information you share, the easier and quicker the process will be. Some things we need are: • At least 3 good quality photographs – no muzzles, headshot & full body please. If your greyhound is good with kids and animals or likes lazing on the couch, show us! • Complete a short profile on your greyhound – we have a form that will help. • Visit our Facebook page or talk to us for tips.
Visit your Vet as soon as possible for pre-rehoming procedures including neutering/spaying, pet passport, vaccinations, flea/worm treatment. RCÉ and IRGT will provide finance towards these costs Your greyhound will remain at home with you until we’ve matched them with their new home. Once your greyhound is ready to move to their new home you will carry them to an arranged collection point.

All For the love of the greyhound Fionnuala Moloney says greyhounds have been at the centre of her life for as long as she can remember.
Fionnuala and her husband James, along with their trusty companion Vera (who won five races at Limerick Greyhound Stadium during a two and a half year racing career) are regular visitors to Greenpark, interacting with racegoers and allowing them to get up close and personal with a retired racing greyhound. Fionnuala’s passion for greyhounds is infectious and her background is stepped in animals. She has a keen interest in horses too, with her father having been an inspector for the ISPCA. She is now based in Croom and is originally from Limerick city. “It’s great to see the reaction of the children when they see the retired dogs here. They light up when they see the dogs, a lot of kids have never touched a greyhound or seen them up close. Lately in particular, people are taking a huge interest in them and they’re a hit with everybody,” Fionnuala says. Fionnuala still keeps racing dogs and currently owns a few greyhounds in training. She has also begun providing foster care for greyhounds as they embark on their journey to their ‘forever’ home, getting them acclimatised to home life before they are rehomed as pets in Europe and beyond. The GRI re-
cently extended and increased support for its foster care scheme, with Fionnuala currently fostering a number of greyhounds. “Some of them are only here a few short days, some of them for a bit longer. We bring them into the house, get them used to the stairs and the couch, so that way when they go to a home in Germany or Italy they’re used to all that before they get there,” she says. She even became so attached to one of her fosterers – Rural Vic, who retired earlier last year having raced impressively at open class level – she has kept him for herself! “We’ve always had Vera here, then I got a dog to rehome, Rural Vic, he was in foster care ready to go but we fell in love with him so much that he ended up staying! He’s lying on the couch as I’m talking to you.”

Declaration of a ‘NO RACE’ The stewards may declare a ‘No Race’ only in the following circumstances 1. Where there is mechanical or other defect of the hare equipment or starting box or any outside interferences with the race, or 2. If any of the dogs fight, and as a consequence, all fail to pursue the hare, or 3. If for any other reason all dogs fail to pursue the hare Note: A greyhound turning back in a race does not constitute outside interference. Unauthorised photography in this stadium is strictly prohibited If through any cause the meeting has to be abandoned before the start of the Fourth Race, pass out tickets will be issued, but, under no circumstances, will admission money be refunded. Greyhounds Turning in Traps: 1. If a greyhound turns before the hare is put in motion that greyhound will be taken out and righted. If, however, he turns again no further attention will be given to him. 2. If a greyhound turns while the hare is in motion the hare should not be stopped and the traps should be released. 3. If the hare passes the traps and for any reason the traps do not operate then all the dogs should be taken out and re-examined before they are put into the traps again.
