We owe a huge debt of gratitude to The Friends & Supporters of Cork Greyhound Racing whose sponsorship of and dedication to this event has helped to establish it as one of Ireland’s most prestigious competitions and a highlight of the annual greyhound racing calendar in this country. Up to now, this event has been sponsored by greyhound fans locally, nationally and internationally and, consequently, it holds a special place in greyhound communities near and far, as they have contributed greatly to its success over the past 30 years. Great credit must go to The Friends & Supporters of Cork Greyhound Racing and Chairman Jimmy Barry Murphy for their work in securing Bar One Racing as a joint title sponsor for the event for the next four years, which ensures this Classic remains a key fixture on the Greyhound racing calendar. OPENING ROUND
A WINNER of the Munster Oaks in Waterford last Saturday night, Eazy Razzle went joint quickest in Curraheen Park as the opening round of the Bar One Racing Irish Greyhound Laurels got off to a flying start in front of a packed house at Curraheen Park.
Producing one of her better breaks along the outside of the track, the Johnny Linehan-trained star went around the opening turns alongside Glory Baz. The 6-4 second favourite is a powerful finisher and she came from a length and a half behind the early leader at the second last bend, to win by a going away two and a half lengths, in 28.07. It was a superb performance from the super-talented lady who is owned by Barry Rocks. Also clocking 28.07 was Jacktavern Bolt for trainer Graham Holland and owners the Pillar Syndicate. A winner of the A1 Kasko Derby around course and distance last week, the 9-4 second choice of the punters put on another stunning performance to make it six straight wins in Cork. Move To Soon got off to a dream start along the rails, but the winner was soon on terms and he showed incredible back-straight pace to lead. Keeping on well on the turns for home, Jacktavern Bolt beat Move To Soon, by three-quarters of a length, in 28.07. It was all about Radical Hero in race number seven. Trained by Thomas O’Donovan for Gerard Hutton, the 4-6 favourite produced a smart start and once he slipped around in front, he quickly put the race to bed. A three-and-a-half length success over Kilcolgan Zeus, in 28.12. Droopys Beglin made a lot of the running in the fourth heat, but it was Glengar Martha who came out on top to win for trainer Pat Buckley and owner William Wood. The 3-1 winner sat second for
most of the journey and the classy performer was that bit stronger on the home straight, delivering a superb performance to beat the early-paced Droopys Beglin, by a length, in 28.13. A winner of the recent Dundalk Irish Sprint Cup, Carrick Aldo showed all of his class and pace to win the closing heat for trainer David Murray and owner Thomas Glynn. The even-money favourite didn’t get off to a great start, but he exploded into the opening turn to join Droopys Rocker up front. Soon in pole position, he quickened clear down the back and went on to post a fantastic 28.15, three lengths clear of the Droopys runner at the line. One of the performances of the night came from the in-form Halo, for trainer Matthew Harte and owners Basil Holian and Bernadette Holian. Following up on a recent impressive display at Shelbourne Park, the 5-4 favourite produced his best start to win the all-important early lead. Rural Taylor was on his heels throughout, but the impressive winner had all the answers, staying on powerfully to score by a length, in 28.15. Racing got underway with a smart performance from Liam Peacock’s Bogger Rambo. The 3-1 shot displayed plenty of all-round pace, making the most of the rails pitch to beat Clona Rocko, by a length and a half, in 28.28. Boylesports Gift, trained by Paul Hennessy for John Boyle, put on a fantastic finish to run down Ballymun Boy in the second heat. A couple of lengths to make up in fourth at the second last bend, the 6-1 outsider pulled out all the stops to beat the favourite, by three-quarters of a length, in 28.46. Grouchos Vic (4-1) overcame trouble in running to win the third heat for David Carroll and Luke O’Connell. A really likeable performance as things didn’t go right for the improving winner who battled bravely to beat Ballymac Reymie, by half a length, in 28.58.
In the sixth of the night, Bouncing Lad recorded back-to-back winning performances. Trained by Pat O’Connell for owners the Bouncing Lad Syndicate, the 6-1 shot was in the mix throughout and he kept finding to deny Burgess Supreme and Swords Rex. A 28.45 winning performance. In the following heat, High Trend made the most of the inside line to win for trainer Graham Holland and owners the R-T-And-C-Syndicate. The even-money joint favourite made all the running to score, in 28.37. Millridge Levi, for Donal O’Mahony, showed his class when overcoming a wide draw in race number 10. A quarter-finalist in the Irish Greyhound Derby, the 6-1 shot delivered a 28.28 winning performance, running down the front running Peroni Eoiny in the last stride to get the verdict by the shortest of margins.
SECOND ROUND
JACKTAVERN BOLT made it seven straight wins in Curraheen Park on Saturday night with another stunning display in the second round of the Bar One Racing Irish Greyhound Laurels which is in accusation with the Friends & Supporters of Cork Greyhound Racing.
Trained by Graham Holland for the Pillar Syndicate, the even-money favourite produced one of his usual flying starts from trap five and he stormed around the opening corners in front. Glengar Martha turned second and she was soon within a length and a half, however, Jacktavern Bolt remained in top gear throughout. It was a sensational display as he galloped powerfully to the line, just holding the strong run of Glengar Martha, by half a length, in 27.99, the quickest run of the Laurels this year. Five and a half lengths back to Bouncing Lad in third place. Trainer Graham Holland recorded a 1-2 in heat number seven, High Trend putting on a likeable display for owners the R-T-And-Syndicate. The 9-4 second favourite made all the running to win in style, clocking 28.23 and coming home six lengths clear of Glory Baz in second place. A length back to Millridge Zara in third place. In the opening heat, Rathdown Molly got the second round of the Laurels off to a terrific start by delivering a superb front-running winning display. Trained by Marie Gilbert for owner Bill Mulholland, the 6-4 second choice of the punters came away quickly and once she won the all-important early lead, the race always looked in safekeeping. In total control throughout, the impressive winner ran out a five-length winner over Rural Taylor, in 28.12, with
five lengths back to Daring Bowie in third place. In the third heat, the powerful running Millridge Byrce returned to top form for Donal O’Mahony. Swords Rex was a non-runner in this heat so it opened the door for the well-drawn winner along the inside of the track. It was all about the flying early pace of Ballymun Boy early on as he pulled about eight lengths clear down into the third corner. From here, the Millridge runner hit top gear and he produced an outstanding finish to reel in Ballymun Boy and land the spoils, in 28.15, a length and a half clear of the early leader, with three and a half lengths back to Droopys Rocker in third place. In the following heat, leading hope for outright glory, Carrick Aldo recorded back-to-back winning performances at the Cork venue. Just making the corner in front from the outside of the track, the 4-6 favourite quickened clear on the back straight and the Thomas Glynn-owned runner was strong throughout. Another beautiful display, clocking 28.19 and coming home with three and a half lengths to spare over Trouble. Kilbarry Travel was six and a half lengths back in third. It was a night to remember for owner Thomas Glynn as Carrick Fergie ran out a fine winner of heat six, this time for trainer Robert Gleeson. Burgess Supreme made a lot of the early running, but the 6-1 winner always looked dangerous in second and Carrick Fergie pulled out all the stops in the closing stages to deny the Produce Stakes Champion, by three-quarters of a length, in 28.34, with a length and a length and a half back to the fast finishing Easy Razzle in third. In the second heat, Clona Rocko landed the spoils for trainer Michael Taggart and owner Daniel Kerr. Showing lovely early speed along the outside of the track and with trouble on the inside, the 5-2 shot sailed around the opening corners in front. Five lengths clear approaching the second last bend, Clona Rocko did enough to score, in 28.53, a length and a half clear of the running on Radical Hero. Three lengths back to Bogger Rambo in third place. In the closing heat, Grouchos Vic impressed with another classy display, winning for owners David Carroll and Luke O’Connell. The 4-1 shot sat second early as hot favourite Droopys Beglin was taking them along at the head of affairs. However, the improving winner was strongest in the closing stages, running on well to make it back-to-back wins in the Laurels, posting 28.33 and getting the better of Droopys Beglin, by three-quarters of a length, with three lengths back to Role Model in third place.
QUARTER FINALS
TRAINER Graham Holland enjoyed a fantastic treble in the quarter-finals of the 2023 Bar One Racing Irish Greyhound Laurels at Curraheen Park on Saturday night.
It was Glory Baz who went quickest on the clock when winning the opening heat, in 28.21, for the Holland team and owners Sheila Duncan and Peter McMunn. Showing huge early speed to win the all-important early lead, the 7-2 shot was always in control as he delivered a really impressive frontrunning winning run. Clona Rocko ran another fine race in second, three lengths back, with another two lengths back to Burgess Supreme in third. In the following heat, Jacktavern Bolt made it eight straight wins when winning for trainer Graham Holland and owners the Pillar Syndicate. The even-money favourite produced another very quick start and he was in total control right away. Showing big speed up front, Bolt delivered another top-class display to beat Ballymun Boy, by three lengths, in 28.29, with a length back to Rural Taylor back in third. Rathdown Molly made the most of the inside line to win the third heat for trainer Marie Gilbert and owner Bill Mulholland. The 5-4 favourite didn’t produce her quickest start but she showed a lovely touch of early pace to lead at the opening bends. Carrick Aldo was poorly from traps but he also showed stunning early speed to get in the mix early on. It was a fantastic battle with Rathdown Molly just holding the strong run of Carrick Aldo, by a neck, in 28.26. Three and a half lengths back to Role Model in third place. High Trend made it a Graham Holland treble when showing plenty of early speed to win the
fourth and final heat for owners the R T And C Syndicate. The 5-4 favourite displayed plenty of early dash as he made every yard of the running to beat Glengar Martha, who herself showed huge dash, when back in second. A length the margin, in 28.36, with three and a half lengths back to Easy Razzle in third place.
SEMI-FINALS
BOTH Carrick Aldo and Jacktavern Bolt delivered stunning winning performances in the semi-finals of the Bar One Racing Irish Greyhound Laurels at Curraheen Park on Saturday night. In association with the Friends & Supporters of Cork Greyhound Racing, we have a fantastic line-up for next Saturday’s feature final.
Trained by David Murray for Thomas Glynn, Carrick Aldo ran out a well-backed winner of the second semi-final. The 5-4 market leader didn’t produce his quickest start, but he displayed huge early gears to lead around the opening turns. Showing plenty of pace up front, Carrick Aldo bounced back to winning ways with a top-class 28.20 winning performance. High Trend was best of the rest, four and a half lengths back in second. A further half a length back to Role Model in third place. In the opening semi-final, Jacktavern Bolt was another popular winner as the even-money winner made it a magnificent nine straight wins. Showing all of his early speed to win the all-important early lead, the in-form tracker was in top gear heading down the back straight as Glory Baz was right in the mix in behind. It was another special performance as Bolt clocked 28.20 for the Pillar Syndicate. Easy Razzle ran a remarkable race for second, showing massive gears to finish strongly and get within a length and a half. Three-quarters of a length back to Glory Baz in third place.
BARRY DRAKE LOOKS BACK AT THE 2009 AND 2012 IRISH GREYHOUND LAURELS
THE Irish Greyhound Laurels Classic is one of the great sporting occasions in Cork and the event has delivered some magnificent stories over the years. Everyone loves a local winner and back in 2009, Sevenheads Bay (pictured right) ran out a most special winner. There were tremendous scenes when the Graham Holland-trained Sevenheads Bay won the Irish Laurels for his West Cork owner, John O'Regan. All about early speed, Sevenheads Bay was a real star in the 2009 Irish Greyhound Laurels. In the opening round, he laid down a serious marker when clocking a fantastic 28.34. He ran another big race in the second round, only going down by a short head to
Kiowa Myth. Then came back-to-back winning performances, posting 28.40 and 28.43. That semi-final
winning run was a cracker, overcoming the wide draw in trap five to beat the likes of Forest Boss and the well-fancied Boherna Best. When Sevenheads Bay was drawn in the red jacket of trap one, hopes were high for a fairytale success.
FAMOUS LAURELS SUCCESS FOR SEVENHEADS BAY
Just like previous rounds, Sevenheads Bay delivered another flying start from the rails pitch and the big local runner was in prime position early on. In top gear heading down the back straight, the crowd went wild as the big local hope was on track for a famous Laurels success. Keeping on well up front, Sevenheads Bay went on to beat Oran Classic, by two lengths, in 28.50. Of course, a couple of weeks previously, Oran Classic had finished second in the final of the Irish Greyhound Derby behind College Causeway, in one of those great Derby finals. Sevenheads Bay landed the prestigious event for owner John O’Regan of Butlerstown, the presentation area was thronged with friends, relations, wellwishers and greyhound enthusiasts being carried along by the wave of excitement and delight.
THREE YEARS LATER
Three years later, there was another special Cork winner as Knockglass Billy (pictured right) scored another famous Laurels success for trainer Graham Holland and Ladysbridge owner, Martin Murphy. A 28.15 winner in the opening round, Knockglass Billy then ran some big races in defeat before making the all-important final with a second-place finish to Razldazl Rioga in the semi-final.
FOOT PERFECT PERFORMANCE IN THE FINAL
Just like Sevenheads Bay, Knockglass Billy impressed from the red jacket in the feature final as he delivered a foot-perfect performance in the final, making every yard of the running to win in such fantastic style, clocking 28.30 and winning with plenty to spare.

Winning trainer Holland was over the moon: “I never thought I’d have a night to rival Sevenheads Bay. That night was special because it was the first local winner at this track but this was equal. “The support Cork people give is unreal. They came out of everywhere to support him and there was a real will for him to win. It definitely helps. “I’ve had great luck with Cork owners and I’m just proud that they picked me to train their dogs.

GREYHOUND CARE AND WELFARE RCÉ Injuries at Tracks Recovery Scheme Rásaíocht Con Éireann (RCÉ) /Greyhound Racing Ireland (GRI) wishes to remind all Owners and Trainers that funding is available through the “Injuries at Tracks Recovery Scheme” for the treatment of greyhounds which have been injured while racing or partaking in Unofficial, Official Trials and RCÉ Licensed stadia. The Scheme is open to all owners and trainers who have incurred veterinary costs in the treatment of greyhounds to repair a career-ending orthopaedic (bone) injury*. *Career ending bone injuries may include fractured hocks, fractured long bones and multiple fractures of the metacarpals/metatarsals. An application to the Scheme shall be made in the knowledge that the greyhound will be immediately retired from competitive action (trials and races) following its treatment and every effort must be made to find this greyhound a suitable home. Any greyhound that has been treated through the Scheme shall not be sold or given away for racing. A fully paid invoice from the veterinary practice that completed the treatment of the greyhound and the completed application form together with (a) a veterinary certificate of treatment issued by the ‘track vet’ at the time the injury occurred (if injury occurred during racing) or (b) a veterinary certificate of treatment issued by the veterinary surgeon who treated the greyhound on day injury occurred together with confirmation from the relevant Racing Manager/ Control Steward of the occurrence of the injury (if injury occurred during Qualifying Trials), shall be submitted when applying to RCÉ for funding under this Scheme. RCÉ may require additional evidence regarding the retirement details of the greyhound prior to settling any application for funding. Assistance funding will be set at 75% of the veterinary cost, up to a maximum of €1000 per greyhound, for the treatment of a career-ending orthopaedic (bone) injury*. RCÉ is committed to encouraging responsible greyhound ownership and spreading the message amongst industry patrons that all racing greyhounds must be treated with care and that after racing each greyhound is afforded an opportunity to enjoy a happy retirement. Note that all claims from the RCÉ Injury at Tracks Recovery Scheme will be individually assessed and reviewed in detail. RCÉ reserves the right to withhold payment if it has reason to believe the claim to be fraudulent. Being present at the weighing in of greyhounds to ensure all greyhounds are healthy and fit to race
To examine any greyhounds that are brought to the attention of the vet by the stewards
To provide emergency care to any greyhound injured during racing
To visually assess all greyhounds post racing

NOTICE DECLARATION OF A ‘NO RACE’ The Stewards may declare a ‘NO RACE’ in the following circumstances: • Where there is mechanical or other defect of the hare equipment or starting box or any outside interference with the race. • If any of the dogs fight, and as a consequence, all fail to pursue the hare • If for any other reason, all dogs fail to pursue the hare Note: A greyhound turning back in a race does not constitute outside interference. If through any cause the race has to be abandoned before the start of the fourth Race, pass out tickets will be issued, but, under no circumstances, will admission money be refunded. GREYHOUND TURNING IN TRAPS (A) If a greyhound turns before the hare is put in motion, that greyhound will be taken out and righted. If, however, he turns again, no further attention will be given to him. (B) If a greyhound turns while the hare is in motion, the hare should not be stopped and the traps should be released. (C) If the hare passes the traps and for any reason the traps do not operate, then all the dogs should be taken out and re-examined before they are put into traps again.
