On 1st October 2020, we turned the page to a new chapter in Irish Greyhound Racing. Bord na gCon / Irish Greyhound Board which was established under the Greyhound Industry Act (1958) changed to become Rásaíocht Con Éireann/Greyhound Racing Ireland under the Greyhound Racing Act 2019.
CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME... A Chairde, I would like to extend a warm welcome to everybody participating in the Rásaíocht Con Éireann/Greyhound Racing Ireland Winter Racing Festival. I am delighted that we are in a position to again welcome patrons back to Shelbourne Park for this year’s festival following last year’s events being held behind closed doors”. I appreciate that many of you will be engaging on-line or watching the action through RPGTV who, we are delighted, continue to provide excellent coverage of Irish Greyhound Racing. The race cards on offer for the two days of the festival comprise the best greyhound talent in 2021 and we very much appreciate owners and trainers who are making the festival what it is – a celebration of success during the year. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our sponsors for the feature races over weekend. I appreciate the challenges that all sectors have faced during the pandemic and the fact sponsorship is available for these events demonstrates their continued commitment to the industry. The hope for 2021 was that normality would have resumed for the Christmas season, unfortunately this has not materialised and there is a renewed level of uncertainty relating to Covid 19. I would like to thank you for you continued cooperation with the necessary protocols that have been introduced to ensure public health guidelines are fully respected and ask that you continue to play your part in reducing the spread of the virus by following public health advice. One of the key priorities of the Board is the continued expansion to the Care and Welfare Programme. Significant progress has been made in this area in 2021, for example, IRGT assisted rehoming’s are likely to exceed 2,000 for the first time and the recently launched the updated Code of Practice. The principal theme of the Code is that the welfare and care of a greyhound must at all times take precedence over the demands of the stakeholders and all those involved in the greyhound industry. I would encourage all to familiarise yourselves with the code which is available to view on www.grireland.ie. I want to acknowledge the strong support of the Government and Oireachtas to funding the greyhound industry and the allocation of €17.6M for 2022, which will assist with the continued significant expansion of a range of care and welfare initiatives during 2022 and assist with the commercial challenges as the industry recovers from the impact of restrictions experienced during the pandemic. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all in the greyhound community the very best for Christmas 2021. Declaration of a ‘NO RACE’
The Stewards may declare a ‘NO RACE’ only in the following circumstances: • Where there is mechanical or other defect of the hare equipment or starting box or any outside interference with the race. • If any of the dogs fight, and as a consequence, all fail to pursue the hare • If for any other reason, all dogs fail to pursue the hare Note: A greyhound turning back in a race does not constitute outside interference If through any cause the race has to be abandoned before the start of the fourth Race, pass out tickets will be issued, but, under no circumstances, will admission money be refunded.
Greyhound Turning in Traps
(A) If a greyhound turns before the hare is put in motion, that greyhound will be taken out and righted. If, however, he turns again, no further attention will be given to him. (B) If a greyhound turns while the hare is in motion, the hare should not be stopped and the traps should be released. (C) If the hare passes the traps and for any reason the traps do not operate, then all the dogs should be taken out and re-examined before they are put into traps again.

Declaration of a ‘NO RACE’
The Stewards may declare a ‘NO RACE’ only in the following circumstances: • Where there is mechanical or other defect of the hare equipment or starting box or any outside interference with the race. • If any of the dogs fight, and as a consequence, all fail to pursue the hare • If for any other reason, all dogs fail to pursue the hare Note: A greyhound turning back in a race does not constitute outside interference If through any cause the race has to be abandoned before the start of the fourth Race, pass out tickets will be issued, but, under no circumstances, will admission money be refunded.
Greyhound Turning in Traps
(A) If a greyhound turns before the hare is put in motion, that greyhound will be taken out and righted. If, however, he turns again, no further attention will be given to him. (B) If a greyhound turns while the hare is in motion, the hare should not be stopped and the traps should be released. (C) If the hare passes the traps and for any reason the traps do not operate, then all the dogs should be taken out and re-examined before they are put into traps again.
