On behalf of Rásaíocht Con Éireann (RCÉ) I am delighted to welcome all those in attendance and watching the action on RPGTV of the BoyleSports 2021 Irish Greyhound Derby Final. We remain subject to restrictions associated with Covid-19 but I am pleased that we are in a position to again welcome patrons to Shelbourne Park to hear the “Derby roar”. It is important that everybody in attendance tonight fully observes the directions and guidelines from staff and security personnel so that public health guidelines are fully respected. I want to pay tribute to John Boyle and his team at BoyleSports who have committed to sponsor the Irish Greyhound Derby up to 2023. This will bring the total period of sponsorship by BoyleSports to 10 years which is a phenomenal level of support for Irish greyhound racing. We express our thanks to all at BoyleSports for their continued commitment to the greyhound industry. As an event, the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby continues to attract attention far and wide. 150 entries went into the Derby draw for a very attractive overall prize fund close to €300,000. I wish to thank RPGTV for the coverage of the event and the coverage of many of the greyhound classic events throughout 2021. It is extremely disappointing that RTÉ, as national broadcaster, continues to refuse to cover greyhound racing generally and the Irish Greyhound Derby in particular. I want to thank all who have been involved in making the 2021 Derby a reality particularly the staff of RCÉ and the team at Shelbourne Park. The phased relaxation of the Covid restrictions enables RCÉ to now commence the process of re-building the commercial elements of our activity and restore footfall to stadia, food and beverage and tote operations. I want to also acknowledge the ongoing support of government and the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue TD, in the allocation of €19.2M from the Horse & Greyhound Fund in 2021, during what has been a challenging period for the industry. The Board is committed to fully delivering on traceability for all racing greyhounds and I would seek the support of the entire industry to ensure that this is delivered to a very high standard. We will continue to implement and enforce the requirements of the Rásaíocht Con Éireann Traceability System (RCÉTS). For now, I hope you will all thoroughly enjoy a night of exceptional greyhound racing, on a night when the 2021 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby winner will become known. Explosive aiming to end a drought for black?

Tonight, Susie Sapphire and Singalong Sally will become the eleventh and twelfth members of the fairer sex since 1999 to take her place in the decider. Susie Sapphire is a considerably shorter price than Singalong Sally but both are exceptional talents and seem certain to play a part.

When Explosive Boy goes to traps in the Derby decider, he will be aiming to end the longest losing sequence of the various traps. Not since Razldazl George in 2011 has the Irish Derby champion wore the black jacket. Of course, Explosive Boy is strongly fancied to end the sequence this evening.

For those wondering, the eight bitches to have tasted Derby success are Monalogue in 1933, Muinessa (1937), Brave Damsel (1941), Catsrock Daisy (1972), Penny County (1979), The Other Toss (1990), Tina Marina (1996) and Spring Time (1999).

Fans of Jackslittlething can take heart from the fact that trap five has won eight Derby finals since the turn of the century. It is easily the most prolific trap with the latest win for the orange jacket coming when Lenson Bocko who, incidentally, was also trained by Graham Holland emerged triumphant in 2019.

Derby winners galore in decider

The trend of Derby winning trainers making the decider continues this year. In fact, of the six trainers in the final, only Thomas Buggy and Peter Cronin have never won the Derby.

Newinn Taylor won from the stripes last week and followers of All About Ted can take heart from the fact that trap six has been responsible for four winners since 2013.

Incredibly, Graham Holland will be seeking a fourth Derby success and an unprecedented third win in a row when he puts Jackslittlething in boxes this evening. His first win came in 2016 with Rural Hawaii, while Lenson Bocko and Newinn Taylor won the last two renewals of the Derby for the Golden based handler.

So, what does it mean for tonight’s race? In truth, not much. Explosive Boy and Susie Sapphire will head the market but, be warned, anything can happen in a Derby decider.

Can Susie or Sally finally win another Derby for the ladies?

Pat Buckley will bid for a second Irish Derby success with Singalong Sally. The Cappawhite handler claimed his previous success some twelve years ago with the legendary College Causeway going unbeaten through the Derby.

There has been no shortage of evidence through this year’s Derby that the ladies are more than capable of keeping up with their male counterparts in greyhound racing. The Derby roll of honour tells a different story, however.

Susie Sapphire will bid to become the first greyhound to go unbeaten through the Derby since College Causeway. She is trained by Owen McKenna, who of course, captured the 2004 Derby with Like A Shot, while his legendary father Ger McKenna won the Derby on three different occasions including with Own Pride in 1969.

Amazingly, no bitch has won the blue riband this century and only eight, in total, have claimed Derby glory since the inaugural running in 1932. For the record, the last female to come home in front was Spring Time in 1999. Remarkably, Ger Watson’s brilliant bitch was the third female to win Derby in the 90’s. The others being The Other Toss in 1990 and Tina Marina in 1996.

Own Pride was a son of 1966 Derby winner Always Proud who, to this day, is the only greyhound to both win the classic and sire a Derby champion. That record is under threat this evening as both Carrigeen North and Explosive Boy are sons of Derby champions.

Since Spring Time, ten bitches have reached the final and attempted to end the drought but all have failed, although Holycross Leah and Mustang Mega went close, finishing second in 2016 and 2003 respectively, while Meenagh Miracle ran an incredible race to finish a close second twelve months ago.

Carrigeen North is a son of 2012 Derby winner Skywalker Puma, who only passed away in recent months, while Explosive Boy is a son of 2017 champion Good News. If Explosive Boy is to win the Derby, he would be providing Pat Guilfoyle with his second success as he also trained his sire.

THE 2021 BOYLESPORTS DERBY SO FAR … JACK SENDS OUT A CLEAR WARNING

Princess, Ballymac Ariel and Explosive Boy had the honour of going fastest as all three stopped the clock in 29.40, further highlighting their undoubted Derby claims.

There was a hugely exciting start to the Derby some five weeks ago with the judge unable to separate Scooby Princess and Craggon Mor in the opening heat. It set the tone for what was to come in the following weeks.

All three dominated in their respective contests and were now riding high in the sponsor’s betting. So too were the likes of Jackslittlething and Deadly Destroyer. Jackslittlething didn’t quite reach the same heights as the previous week but he did run well to score after a slow start. Posting 29.71, he was almost nine lengths slower than six days earlier but remained the second choice in the outright market.

Just fifteen minutes later, the hottest ante-post favourite for many years, Explosive Boy, got his Derby campaign off to a winning start. A 2-9 chance, he duly obliged with minimum fuss, stopping the clock in a fastest of the night 29.47. Ballymac Ariel and Penylane Sheba impressed for the ladies on the same night winning in 29.50 and 29.53 respectively but the opening round headlines went to Jackslittlething and his expert handler Graham Holland.

Susie Sapphire and Jacob Tashadelek displayed massive early speed to impress for the second week running. Susie Sapphire was electric from boxes as she dictated throughout to stop the clock in 29.50, while Jacob Tashadelek was also foot-perfect as he dominated to win in the same time.

Kameko had been Holland’s only winner in the opening session but twenty-four hours later he had a far more fruitful evening, sending out a further four first round winners including Jackslittlething, who posted a scarcely believable 29.10.

There were also fine displays from Athlacca Zette and Deerjet Sydney as both emerged triumphant in 29.56. Just behind them on the clock was All About Ted. He displayed notable improvement from his opening round effort to record 29.61.

To highlight the quality of the run, Athlaca Zette, who was second to Jackslittlething was the joint second fastest qualifier from the opening round. Holland’s other winners on the night included Swords Maestro, Gaytime Milo, and Romeo Magico.

Droopys Good was also starting to gain some followers after he displayed massive early speed to win in 29.62. With a couple of the big names making their exit at this point of the competition, it was clear that any mistakes, however small, were going to prove costly in the coming weeks.

Jacob Tashadelek was the second fastest winner on the night, showing tremendous early speed to emerge a superb winner in a rapid 29.45. Early speed was also the key to success for Macho Pride as he recorded 29.56, while Oaks champion Susie Sapphire made a wonderful start to her Derby challenge as she dominated throughout to win in 29.59. Little did we know then that she would be virtually flawless for the next four weeks.

ARIEL PRODUCES ONE OF THE GREAT RUNS As always, the third round marked the first time in the classic that all the remaining competitors were in action on the one night. The undoubted star was Ballymac Ariel as she produced one of the truly greatest runs ever seen at Shelbourne Park.

He breeds and shows Hovawarts and enjoyed considerable success both at local and national level. He has won Best of Breed in Krufts 3 times, along with both World and Europeans titles. Mick is better known to the Irish greyhound community as the owner of The Canine Hydrotherapy and Rehabilitation Centre. Mick has been a Guest Judge for several Retired Greyhound Shows at European Level, as well as nationally for The Irish Retired Greyhound Trust. He also played host to the largest Retired Greyhound Show held in Ireland which were held at his premises in Co. Kildare. 16

THE 2021 BOYLESPORTS DERBY SO FAR … It was also business as usual from Susie Sapphire as she maintained her unbeaten record in the competition with another superb display of early speed. Making all, she contained the withering late challenge of Scooby Princes by a head in 29.48.

Drawn alongside the ante-post favourite Explosive Boy, it was evident she was going to need to be foot-perfect and she didn’t disappoint. Explosive Boy was razor-sharp at boxes but Ballymac Ariel flew into the turn to take over before leaving her rival standing. Liam Dowling’s starlet ran out a sensational four length scorer in 29.07, the joint second fastest time ever recorded for the Derby trip at Shelbourne Park.

It was also evident that, after seasonal rest, Singalong Sally was starting to return to her very best as she took the remaining heat in 29.70.

Ballymac Ariel wasn’t the only bitch to star on the night as both Susie Sapphire and Skywalker Cilla won in brilliant fashion. In victory, Susie Sapphire made it three from three in the competition. Again, displaying awesome early speed to score in 29.31, Peter Comerford’s star was now starting to make real waves. Skywalker Cilla won in different fashion, picking up Ballymac Fairone to win in 29.45.

THE BIG TWO DOMINATE IN SEMIS The final twelve did battle in two intriguing semi-finals. So much attention was on the second heat, in particular, as it had one of the most incredible fields ever assembled but All About Ted hadn’t read the script and took the headlines with a wonderful display in the opening heat. Dominating from the start, the Peter Cronin trained star came home clear in 29.23. Singalong Sally displayed great determination to grab a pitch on the rails in the early yards before going on to finish second, while Carrigeen North dug in to grab the all-important third qualifying spot.

All About Ted continued to show improvement as he ran out a very easy winner in 29.35. Much like Susie Sapphire, Ballymac Ariel and Skywalker Cilla, All About Ted was really growing into the Derby. Jackslittlething made it three from three as he won in comfortable fashion in 29.51, while Carrigeen North claimed his first win of the Derby when coming home in front in 29.63. Two of Ireland’s best and most established performers Ballymac Wild and Deerjet Sydney won the remaining heats to earn their place in the quarter finals.

Susie Sapphire, Ballymac Ariel and Jackslittlething were all defending their unbeaten record in the competition in the second heat. Add in Explosive Boy, Ballymac Fairone and Priceless Jet and it really did promise so much. When the dust settled, however, it was all about Susie Sapphire. Explosive Boy again hit the ground running but Susie Sapphire flew up the fence to dictate from the early yards. She extended her lead to halfway before containing the late charge of Explosive Boy by a head.

JACK BACK TO GO FASTEST IN QUARTERS Jackslittlething came roaring back to his best form in the quarter finals as he produced a paw-perfect display of front running to emerge a wide margin winner over the progressive Carrigeen North in 29.23.

It means that Susie Sapphire will line-up in this evening’s final bidding to become the first unbeaten Derby champion since College Causeway in 2009 and the first female winner this century. Behind Susie Sapphire and Explosive Boy, Jackslittlething held on for third spot and he will seek to give Graham Holland a third Derby title in three years, a feat only ever achieved by the late great Tom Lynch back in the 1950s.

Ballymac Ariel and Explosive Boy met for the second week running with the former again coming out on top despite being under a cloud for much of the week. It was a much tighter affair than the previous week with Ballymac Ariel only mastering Explosive Boy into the third turn before holding on for a half-length success in 29.37. All About Ted also ran a big race in third.

Declaration of a ‘NO RACE’ The Stewards may declare a ‘NO RACE’ only in the following circumstances: • • •

Where there is mechanical or other defect of the hare equipment or starting box or any outside interference with the race. If any of the dogs fight, and as a consequence, all fail to pursue the hare If for any other reason, all dogs fail to pursue the hare

Note: A greyhound turning back in a race does not constitute outside interference If through any cause the race has to be abandoned before the start of the fourth Race, pass out tickets will be issued, but, under no circumstances, will admission money be refunded. Greyhound Turning in Traps (A) (B) (C)

If a greyhound turns before the hare is put in motion, that greyhound will be taken out and righted. If, however, he turns again, no further attention will be given to him. If a greyhound turns while the hare is in motion, the hare should not be stopped and the traps should be released. If the hare passes the traps and for any reason the traps do not operate, then all the dogs should be taken out and re-examined before they are put into traps again.
