INTRODUCING MANDARIN ORIENTAL, VIENNA
A LANDMARK REIMAGINED
It’s a rare privilege to breathe new life into a building with such stature, and an honour to be able to share the results with those who understand the craft, care and long-term vision required to deliver a project of this scale.
This month marks the opening of Mandarin Oriental Vienna, the culmination of a six-year transformation of a 1908 Secessionist courthouse in the heart of the First District. For us, it has been a journey defined by devotion to heritage, the discipline of craftsmanship, and a constant dialogue between past and present.
From the outset, we sought to honour Alfred Keller’s confident Secessionist architecture while creating interiors that feel quietly contemporary, refined, warm, and richly narrative-led. Working closely with heritage authorities, we restored the building’s most significant architectural details and wove in a considered, residential sensibility reflective of the Mandarin Oriental brand.
The result is a hotel that feels both deeply Viennese and unmistakably suites shaped thoughtfully around the building’s original geometry; a palette of marble, timber and chalky plaster enriched with artisan-made detailing; and guestrooms that balance lightness and elegance with patterning drawn from Moser, Hoffmann and the wider Secessionist movement.
Designing the 24 private residences alongside the hotel allowed us to extend this narrative even further, into homes that balance intimacy, comfort and heritage in equal measure.
Above all, this project reflects our belief that luxury hospitality today is about connection: between people and place, history and modernity, experience and emotion. We’re incredibly proud to see this landmark now open its doors.
