Event Recap.
The award-winning Las Vegas Sun held its annual High School Football Media Day at South Point Hotel’s Napa Ballroom on Wednesday, Aug. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Not only is the media day unique to Las Vegas, it is a one-of-a-kind event nationally. Under the helm of Ray Brewer, the Las Vegas Sun’s Assistant Managing Editor of Sports, the media day has grown from team portraits at Valley High School to a daylong celebration at the South Point. Each player receives a commemorative t-shirt and bracelet. This year, Brewer entered his twenty-first year covering high school football in Las Vegas. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the head coach and up to three players from the area’s 35 teams stopped by for interviews, photo and video opportunities. At 3 p.m., the all-city team, composed of 28 of Las Vegas’ top young football athletes, arrived. Teams were treated to food provided by Metro Diner throughout the day. The top teams in Las Vegas are also among the top teams nationally. Bishop Gorman is the three-time defending national champions and enters the season on a 54-game winning streak. Liberty, the reigning Sunrise Region champions, spent 11 weeks last season in the top-25. Both are ranked in the top-100 nationally. The notables on preseason team included quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson from Bishop Gorman, who is verbally committed to UCLA, and teammate Palaie Gaoteote, a USC verbal commit. Others include: Elijah Wade from Arbor View, who has a scholarship offer from Alabama and others; Liberty quarterback Kenyon Oblad, a four-year starter with multiple scholarship offers; and Arizona-commit Jayden Mitchell from Desert Pines.
