Event Recap. Finalists and their families celebrated at the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa’s Showroom the evening of Wednesday, May 24 as the award-winning Las Vegas Sun hosted its second annual black tie optional Sun Standout Awards. The ceremony honored Southern Nevada’s outstanding high school sports teams, athletes, coaches and volunteers. Sponsored by Findlay Toyota and Las Vegas Bowl, the gala was hosted by Greenspun Media Group’s Group Publisher Gordon Prouty and the Las Vegas Sun’s Assistant Managing Editor of Digital and Sports Ray Brewer. Prior to the main event, finalists and their friends and family gathered for a reception and red carpet opportunity. Each finalist was presented with a Sun Standout Award medal in recognition of their achievements. After enjoying appetizers and small bites, the crowd settled in for the program. Prouty opened the event and introduced sponsors Findlay Toyota and Las Vegas Bowl as well as the venue, South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa. Brewer introduced each finalist as their photo appeared on the venue’s screens, and then announced the winners. Special presenters included Barney Cotton, UNLV football’s associate head coach, and John Saccenti, executive director of the Las Vegas Bowl. Saccenti acknowledged the Bishop Gorman versus Clark basketball series as the Game of the Year, while Cotton gave Liberty football its Moment of the Year award for upsetting Texas power Austin Westlake on the road. Ray Mathis, Clark County School District’s recently retired executive athletic director, was presented with the Hank Greenspun Lifetime Achievement Award by Greenspun Media Group CEO Brian Greenspun.
