The Real Deal

Celebrity chef’s outpost delivers on so many levels Fans of Gordon Ramsay have so many options to enjoy his distinct cuisine all over the Strip. The good news is you’ll have a great time no matter where you go, although it’s hard to beat the vibe at Ramsay’s Kitchen by Gordon Ramsay, an extremely welcoming environment. In addition to plenty of seating options, this outpost features a raw bar off to the side with plenty of fresh delights. The open kitchen offers diners the chance to see the chefs hard at work—it’s more

18 | October 2026 Las Vegas Magazine

than a little reminiscent of Ramsay’s hit reality show Hell’s Kitchen. All your favorite dishes are featured here, from the beef Wellington and pan-seared scallops to braised short rib, and shrimp and lobster scampi. And the cocktails are equally as impressive, especially the tableside Valeria’s Grace, where your choice of bourbon, Angostura bitters, demerara sugar and orange swath is served tableside and finished in a smoking cloche.

For the budget-conscious, opt for Gordon’s Golden Hour, which features a three-course prix fixe menu from 4-5 p.m. for $59.95, including a first course of either Caesar salad or onion soup; a second course of roasted chicken breast, petite Wellington or crispy skin salmon; and a dessert of Ramsay’s classic sticky toffee pudding. –Ken Miller Harrah’s Las Vegas. 800.214.9110

The Season Isn’t Over!

Downtown’s premier pool club continues the party year-round

In October, many pool clubs across Las Vegas get ready to shutter for the season. But hang on! There’s a hang downtown that keeps the poolside party pumping year-round—Stadium Swim. This behemoth, dedicated to pools, food, cocktails, DJs, themed parties, sports watch parties, outdoor gaming and more, heats its waters as the weather cools and keeps the doors open no matter the season. Multiple levels here are filled with cabanas, daybeds and six pools. The immense 40-foot-tall, high-definition screen displays all

manner of games (football is in full swing and hockey drops the puck this month, too), so watch parties are on the calendar. What else makes Stadium Swim downtown’s premiere destination? The food and beverage offerings are elevated—and plentiful. There are almost two dozen signature cocktails (all available in pitcher size, too) like the orange Dreamsicle, white strawberry lemonade, Atomic Cooler, strawberry mojito, Kentucky Tea and Super Sonic gin and tonic. Don’t forget the slew of frozen slushy

machines, where we suggest mixing flavors together. The food is way tempting: the Walking Taco, Frito chips in a bag topped with shredded brisket, black beans, queso, crema, jalapeños, guacamole and cilantro; the Impossible slider trio; fish and chips; chicken fritters and fries; and the Stadium dog, a wagyu hot dog served on a toasted brioche bun. So, you think poolside fun is done? Think again! –Kiko Miyasato

Class Is in Session

Time for some art appreciation as adult revue demonstrates serious skill Much has been made of the art of seduction throughout human history, and if you’d like to learn about that during your stay in Vegas, the teachers in Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease can give you an education. All the dancers in the show are professionally trained, and specialize in different genres, such as hip-hop and jazz, with numbers set to songs like “Black Velvet,” “Solo Dancing,” “Vogue” and “Roxanne.” This year is the production’s 27th anniversary, and Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease added several numbers to commemorate the occasion, including one set to Leon Else’s electropop “Black Car.” It’s choreographed by Yesi Burgess, a former cast member who is the current resident director at Voltaire. You can’t learn anything if you don’t pay attention, and another new number, a fire dance set to “Suavamente,” definitely keeps your interest. Each year, Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease produces a calendar where every dancer gets her own page, with a different theme each year. For 2027, the numbers in the show inspired the calendar shoot for Lights, Camera… FANTASY. During the Oct. 14 show, you’ll have a sneak reveal of the calendar. Snag one of those, study it and you’ll be head of the class all next year, even on summer vacation! –Nina King Luxor, 18+. 702.262.4400

Story Time

Queen of Hip-Hop Soul continues a smash residency The impact Mary J. Blige had on the Strip when she began her Las Vegas residency was immediate. My Life, My Story at Dolby Live sold out, and her 10 original dates suddenly turned into 20 before the run had barely begun. My Life, My Story draws from 34 years of music that has a specific way of landing in the lived experiences of her fans. Her early records, including What’s the 411? and My Life, were unguarded and raw, the kind of music that one could describe as utterly emotionally relatable. Blige’s résumé is an undeniable testament to fans’ devotion: Nine Grammys across 38 nominations; Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, class of 2024 (Dr. Dre and Method Man onstage for the induction, with Blige at the mic saying, “The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul is a rock star”); two Oscar nominations for Mudbound (Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song, the first person in Academy history to receive both nods at once); and more than 100 million records sold worldwide. As impressive as all this is, nothing can compare to seeing the woman herself in person onstage, connecting with her audiences in a way few performers of her generation can. And when hits like “Family Affair,” “Be Without You,” “Real Love,” “No More Drama” and “Everything” are delivered, there’s not a single person sitting. –Ken Miller Park MGM, 8 p.m. Oct. 23-24, 28, 30-31, starting at $127 plus tax and fee. ticketmaster.com

Atomic Liquors

Get Your Haunt On Vintage locales offer cocktails, ambience and history Some long-standing Las Vegas bars and restaurants have cool history. With the arrival of the spooky season, it’s the perfect time to check out a few of our favorite ... haunts. It’s safe to say that most everyone has seen the iconic movie Casino. But did you know some scenes were filmed at Piero’s, one of Vegas’ oldest restaurants? Inside the place, you’ll find The A Room with booths and a bar—this is where the who’s who

30 | October 2026 Las Vegas Magazine

have hung out, like Robert De Niro, frequent guest Joe Pesci, Mike Tyson, Don Rickles and Jerry Lewis. Piero’s originally opened in 1982, reportedly owned by mob associate Joe Pignatello. Freddie Glusman purchased the place and moved the restaurant to its current location. But some cool stories remain. You’ll find many a monkey statue and another bar called The Monkey Bar. Why? The mob guys continued to frequent Piero’s, and the FBI kept

eyes on it because word on the street was there was a lot of monkey business going on inside. You can spot things like the see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil monkeys. Piero’s is also known for its heavy-handed, 10-ounce-pour martinis, specialty martinis like the key lime pie martini and the espresso martini with fresh-brewed espresso. The food is homemade Italian like grandma used to make—fresh-made pastas and sauces.

Piero’s

Head downtown to Vegas’ oldest stand-alone operating bar, Atomic Liquors. This place got the city’s first tavern license! It’s also where famed writer Hunter S. Thompson frequently hung out—there’s even a cocktail named after him, The Hunter S. Smash (pictured) with Old Crow whiskey (his fave, he drank it straight), Aperol, lemon, mint and soda. The bar was opened in 1952 as a liquor store and officially became a bar in 1954. It was the hot spot when atomic bombs were being tested out in the Nevada desert. People would grab a drink and head to the roof to watch the mushroom clouds. People even used a Geiger counter to show how much radiation was being blasted into the air! Some of the celebrities that hung out

at Atomic include The Rat Pack and Barbra Streisand, T-Pain with a pop-up performance during Life is Beautiful and comedians Bert Kreischer and Tom Segura as guest bartenders. Look for all the cool stuff around the bar like the 1950s jukebox that still works, old knickknacks and a piece of plexiglass on the ground where you can peer into a hole that was the original safe where workers pulled out old bottles of whiskey. What about Nevada’s oldest operat-

ing bar? Yup, it exists in Goodsprings (a short drive from the Strip). Opened in 1913, Pioneer Saloon is one of the coolest spots to have a cocktail—the history here is in abundance. The food and beverage here is amazing—specialty cocktails use the owners’ own brand of American whiskey, and there’s a huge menu of homemade desserts, as well as one of the best burgers ever. But the ambience and history here can’t be beat. Spot the holes in the wall! A deadly game of poker played in 1915 left one man dead, and you can still see the bullet holes and sit at the original table where the game was played. This is also the bar where actor Clark Gable would sit and wait for word about his wife, Carole Lombard. In 1942, her plane crashed in the mountains nearby, and you can spot of piece of the wreckage at the bar. And you can still see the cigarette burns on the bar from where Gable fell asleep waiting for the tragic news to come in. Pioneer Saloon is even famous most recently for its involvement in the popular video game Fallout: New Vegas. The saloon and adjoining general store are featured prominently in the game, and the owner even holds an annual festival where fans of Fallout come from all around the world. –Kiko Miyasato

Friends With Benefits

Gloria Olguin

Helping her guests have the scariest, best time ever Ever since she was a little kid, Gloria Olguin has loved all things scary. “My sister would be watching cartoons, and I would be watching a scary movie,” she says. That love for the scary followed her throughout her life, and when she saw on social media that Universal Horror Unleashed was opening at Zone 2 of AREA15 in Las Vegas in 2025, she jumped at the chance to be a part of it. “As soon as I saw that I was like, ‘I have to apply—I need to try and get in there,’” Olguin says. “It’s my genre; I love horror, so when I saw that there was an opportunity to be a part of that, I took full advantage.” Today, she’s the attraction’s assistant manager of guest experience operations. While every workday Olguin gets to be surrounded by all things scary, the job also entails one of her other favorite things— guests. “Throughout my career I discovered I really enjoyed talking to people; I’m good at it,” she says. Olguin has worked in the entertainment and hospitality industry for 15 years, getting her start in her home state of California. “My true career passion is the face-to-face interaction,” she says. “It’s something I’ve done throughout my career.” In 2021, she took a leap of faith, she says, and moved to Las Vegas—the world’s best city for hospitality—to see how she could further develop her career. After spending a few years working at top hotels on the Strip, she learned about Universal Horror Unleashed. Besides the day-to-day operations of making sure the guest experience is top-notch, Olguin gets to enjoy the

horror of the immersive attraction herself. Universal Horror Unleashed is filled with four different haunted houses—Universal Monsters, Scarecrow: The Reaping, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Olguin’s fave haunted house) and Blumhouse’s The Exorcist: Believer. There are also roaming performers and performances throughout the venue—her favorite character is the demented-looking Jack The Clown. “When sending guests through the houses, when they walk through the houses … it makes you feel like you stepped on to the actual movie sets,” she says. “I’ve seen guests coming out of the houses running and screaming.” On a scale from one to 10, 10 being the absolute scariest, where does Universal Horror Unleashed rank? “It’s a 10! It is! And I’ve seen it,” Olguin says. “I hear the chainsaw and then I see people run out, but they’re running out with a smile on their face. It’s a good type of scare.” When Olguin isn’t interacting with guests and helping to facilitate a scary good time, you can find her traveling. And it’s no surprise that some of her favorite destinations include Salem, Mass., and New Orleans. “I love hauntings, ghosts—I love all of it,” she says. So Universal Horror Unleashed seems like kismet for this lover of horror; and she wants guests to experience everything she loves about it, too. “Come see me. Come interact with me. I would love to hear more about people’s stories and why they’re here and I’d love to recommend things to them— whether it’s our food and beverage offerings, our merchandise. … People come to our venue because they love horror, and I’m really excited to share with those guests what we have to offer.” –Kiko Miyasato

Caramá perfectly captures Wolfgang Puck’s Italian roots By Nina King

Lobster tagliatelle

34 | August 2026 Las Vegas Magazine

If you’re a longtime visitor to Las Vegas, you’ll notice that restaurants and resorts periodically redecorate, refresh and revive themselves. In some cases, such as with Wolfgang Puck’s Lupo at Mandalay Bay, something entirely new appears. The space now houses Caramá, where a vintage photo of Puck and his mother, Maria, in the garden acted as inspiration. “My mother was a chef, and living so close to the Italian border, she was influenced by the culture and food of Northern Italy. Our meals were always simple and fresh, right from the garden,” said Puck when Caramá opened in 2024. The space is completely different, with everything from entrance to bar location changing. The 49-footlong bar on the entrance’s left is sure to draw your attention, with an overhead arch backed by mirrors and an intricate floral wallpaper; and in the center is a salumeria, inspired by a historical Italian shop. If you’re waiting for your table, either one is great for a quick drink. Around the restaurant, you’ll notice very Italian accents of tile, marble, brass and wood with custom-designed brass chandeliers. Once seated, indulge in a cocktail like the Barmotto, a lovely take on a pisco sour with BarSol pisco, Italicus Rosolio di bergamotto, simple syrup, lime juice and egg white. If you’d like, a tableside trolley service with high-end whiskies can concoct an Old-Fashioned for you. There’s

also an amazing wine and liquor section, and an inhouse sommelier. Accompany that with the bread board, featuring fluffy rosemary focaccia, house-made grissini, whole grain sourdough, balsamic and olive oil. For a savory bite, the prosciutto e burrata features prosciutto di Parma. Seasonal antipasti like farmer’s market grilled peaches are accompanied by whipped ricotta, spicy Calabrian chili honey and focaccina, a fragrant, puffy bread straight from the pizza oven. Being seasonal, this is subject to change, as are several other dishes. The pizza oven issues forth margheritas and others with toppings of pepperoni, mushrooms, guanciale, fontina, sun-dried tomatoes and Italian sausage, perfect for sharing. All the pasta at Caramá is made in-house, including the tagliatelle accented with black truffle; the lobster tagliatelle with Maine lobster and roasted tomatoes; and the spaghetti chitarra fra diavolo, a traditional form created with the chitarra, which results in pasta with a square-shaped form, which is more pronounced if the “strings” are more widely spread. Ricotta ravioli are pillows stuffed with del-

icately flavored cheese and a cream sauce accented with English peas and king trumpet mushrooms. Excellent entrées include a sea scallop risotto with roasted tomato and basil oil; spicy Jidori chicken, which is very juicy (the Calabrian chili marinade definitely keeps the heat high); and the 48-day dryaged ribeye, accompanied by deliciously crisp, yet tender, Tuscan potatoes. Desserts include tiramisu, of course, because are you an Italian restaurant if you don’t have wonderful tiramisu? The gelati and sorbetti selections include chocolate, pistachio and seasonal varieties like strawberry, watermelon and lemon.

Truffles are a subject both Caramá general manager Gianni Toffanello and executive chef Brent Stanford are passionate about. On the menu, you may notice Australian winter black truffles in several preparations; they are delicious. The team at Caramá selects fresh truffles several times a week from a truffle merchant who comes to the restaurant, guaranteeing you have an amazing experience. Later in the year, you’ll find Spanish winter black truffles; they are exactly the same type of truffle, with slight differences depending on which continent they are sourced from. For tagliatelle pasta, you will generally get approximately 5 to 9 grams raining down upon your dish. Oh, please, do shave more on! Las Vegas Magazine October 2026 | 35

On the savory side, guests can expect a modern take on deviled eggs topped with caviar and rice puff; avocado toast with ninja radish and extra-virgin olive oil; smoked salmon paired with citrus dill cream and cucumber; and chicken salad made with roasted pecans, celery and tarragon, served on housemade mini brioche. Then there are the sweets. House-baked plain and cherry scones are accompanied by blueberry-lemon preserves and mascarpone cream, while the pastry selection includes a botanical tart layered with lavender crémeux and berries. Guests can choose from black, green, herbal and flavored teas, ranging from the classic Earl Grey Queen Blend to Tropical Garden, a fruit-forward blend of mango, pineapple, papaya and peach. For those inclined to raise a glass, the beverage menu extends beyond tea. Champagne and wines are available

alongside cocktails such as the Belvedere Blossom, which combines Belvedere, elderflower liqueur, lemon, white peach and sparkling wine, and the Hennessy Honey & Earl, made with Hennessy, chilled Earl Grey tea, honey and orange bitters. Spirit-free selections include the fruit-forward Lady in Red and the espresso-based Almond Joy. Part of the appeal is the variety. Rather than centering the afternoon around a single dish or drink, The Royal Pour offers an assortment of smaller bites and beverages to explore at your own pace. Guests can move between savory and

sweet flavors, revisit favorites or try something different with each pour. The format lends itself naturally to conversation, giving the experience a leisurely rhythm that feels distinct from a traditional lunch or brunch. For locals, it’s an easy way to turn a familiar Strip address into a weekend destination. Make it a birthday gathering, plan a special occasion, bring someone you’ve been meaning to spend time with, or simply give the afternoon a little more attention. With live music, an expansive menu and plenty of reasons to linger, it offers a different way to spend a weekend on the Strip.

The Royal Pour is offered Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for $65 per person. Complimentary valet at Crockfords is included with reservations.

Get a bird’s-eye view of the Southwest with Maverick Helicopters’ exciting tours By Nina King Taking a helicopter ride is one of the more thrilling things you can do when you are visiting Las Vegas, and Maverick Helicopters offers so many packages, from sights of the city to Grand Canyon experiences, that you are sure to find one that delivers all the thrills you can handle. If you haven’t experienced a helicopter flight, then the Vegas Views flight is the perfect starter. Head to Maverick’s own air terminal, right off Las Vegas Boulevard

South near Harry Reid International Airport, across from the Welcome to Las Vegas Sign. This tour is only 10 to 12 minutes long, but gives you a real appreciation for the Las Vegas Strip today. Once you check in for your flight, you’ll be escorted to the luxury Eco-Star helicopter, where your pilot will give you safety protocols, ensure you are all belted in and whisk you skyward. Your flight will give you great views of all the landmarks on the Strip and surrounding area, from the High Roller to Sphere, downtown and more. Some flights combine views of both desert landscape and urban environment, like the Neon & Nature Tour, where you take in city views and head out to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area to land and enjoy a champagne toast. To make it more special, book a Sunset Tour, where the twinkling lights of the Strip and valley make for a magical flight. If it’s the Grand Canyon you yearn to see, Maverick Helicopters has several excellent options for you. The Grand Canyon Wind Dancer Tour is one of the most popular, featuring a 45-minute flight from Vegas to Grand Canyon West, passing

over Hoover Dam and checking out Lake Mead on the way. You’ll fly through the canyon for 10 miles, then descend and land on Hualapai Indian Territory for a champagne toast. Like the Neon & Nature Tour, there is a sunset option available. For a longer stretch in the Grand Canyon, the nearly three-hour Skywalk Odyssey introduces you to Grand Canyon West’s architectural jewel, the Skywalk, a cantilevered glass bridge that hangs over the canyon itself. It’s a unique

experience, and yes, extremely thrilling. On your flight, you’ll get views of many sights, including Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, the extinct volcano Fortification Hill and, of course, the Grand Canyon. When you land, test your mettle with a stroll on the Skywalk. It may be more challenging than you expect! Other tours allow you to spend more time on the ground exploring Grand Canyon West and experience multiple landings as well. If you want to make it a complete day of sightseeing, the Grand Canyon West Bus & Air Tour will collect you from one of the available hotels in a luxury motorcoach and travel to the canyon, where you’ll get an airbound tour of the natural wonder. Whichever tour you choose, it’s sure to give you something to brag about at home and another bucket list item to check off.

Josh Groban is having a productive year—and he’s not done yet What does Tony-, Emmy- and Grammy-Award nominated singer, songwriter and actor Josh Groban have going on lately? A better question would be: What doesn’t he have going on? This year, the man with the soaring voice of an angel hit the road, and he hit it hard with multiple tours around the globe. April came to an end with a wrapup of his GEMS World Tour. This man stamped his passport into oblivion with concert performances in Hawaii, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Phew! At the end of July, he wasn’t just chilling after his world tour; he’d spent those few months on the road again for his North American headline tour, which included special guest Jennifer Hudson. Together they serenaded crowds in iconic concert halls including Madison Square Garden in New York, TD Garden in Boston and the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. Speaking of his dear friend Hudson, she makes an appearance on Groban’s

newest album, CINEMATIC, released in May. The 10-track album—produced by Greg Wells, known for his work with Adele, Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift—is a nod to the music of classic films and includes melodies like “As Time Goes By” from Casablanca, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King, “Brucia La Terra” from The Godfather and the beautiful duet with Groban and Hudson on “Unchained Melody” from Ghost. Groban’s father Jack even makes a guest appearance on the album, playing the trumpet on “Moon River” from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Last month, Groban wrapped—yes, you guessed it—another tour, Stage, Screen and Symphony, in support of the new album, along with Broadway hits. Joining him onstage to support the music was a full symphony orchestra—creating audible ecstasy with every song. With his heavy tour schedule this year, you’d think Groban would love some downtime—maybe a few naps and some binge-watching of his fave show, The Masked Singer? Nope, it’s not Groban’s style, at least not in 2026, ’cause the man had many other accomplishments throughout the year that included accepting his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in May. Guest speakers at the pre-

sentation included famed music producer David Foster as well as friend and actor Josh Gad. During his acceptance speech, Groban thanked family, friends and the recording industry, but spent time to also talk about the importance of supporting the arts and arts education. Add philanthropist to Groban’s nomenclature, as he’s a big proponent of the future generation embracing, learning and championing the arts, especially music— so much so that Groban created the Find Your Light Foundation. This year alone, the foundation donated $1.5 million to arts education programs. Just what does that mean? Around 600,000 youths in grades K-12 benefit through more than 250 nonprofit organizations across 40 states that help ensure they have access to high-quality arts education. Kudos Groban, kudos! And this month on Oct. 19, the Find Your Light Benefit Concert will celebrate honorees along with Groban and special musical guests serenading at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York. And the man with many plans isn’t done yet, because October also includes a limited-time engagement in Las Vegas. Yup, Groban brings GEMS The Las Vegas Residency to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace from Oct. 2-10. To hear hits off his new album CINEMATIC inside such a perfectly suited concert space is sure to be a gift from the man that keeps on giving. Get your tickets now!

Real-life ‘Horseman’ Gabriella Lester helps bring ‘Now You See Me Live’ to the Strip By Genevie Durano Gabriella Lester was 9 when she first saw Now You See Me, the 2013 heist thriller in which a crew of illusionists called the Four Horsemen—played by Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher and Dave Franco—pull off robberies as stage magic. Thirteen years and two sequels later, she’s a Horseman herself, live onstage. At 22, she is the youngest and only female member of the ensemble bringing Now You See Me Live to the Las Vegas Strip for its U.S. premiere Oct. 15, after sold-out runs in Sydney, Perth and Singapore. Las Vegas Magazine caught up with Lester to talk Houdini, Vegas, stage magic and seeing her dreams come true.

Photos by Ken Leanfore

Born in Johannesburg, raised in British Columbia—you’re headlining the Strip at 22. What would 14-year-old Gabriella make of this? She would be jumping for joy. It’s something I grew up dreaming about, and it feels so cool that I get to live that dream.

What set you on this path? I saw a magician perform at my school and completely fell in love. By the time I was 10, I told my parents, “I’m going to be a magician. Nothing will change my mind.” I still feel the same way today.

You mastered Houdini’s upsidedown straitjacket escape at 14. How does a kid even begin to learn that? I discovered Houdini around 13 or 14 and became infatuated with his work. I found this straitjacket escape and decided at school one day that I wanted to do it, so on the way home I’d hang upside down on the monkey bars, arms up, pretending to be Houdini. From the idea to my first performance

took about six months. I still don’t know how I did it back then, but I’m grateful I did.

That takes a certain fearlessness. The driving force, even more than fearlessness, has just been passion. I really love what I do. I feel so fortunate to have found this thing I’m completely in love with, and passion is what’s gotten me to try these crazy new things.

What’s it like sharing a stage with magicians from around the world? It’s incredible. So many castmates are people I looked up to, magicians I grew up watching on TV and YouTube, hoping I’d one day meet them. Now I share the stage. We’ve been on tour for about a year, and we’ve become a family.

The movies use camera cuts and CGI. How does that translate to a live stage? I definitely wish we could pull off some bank heists!

But everything onstage is real and you experience it in person—no camera cuts, no movie magic. It’s almost harder to believe than in the film, because it’s right in front of you. The first movie opens with the Horsemen at the MGM in Vegas, and this is like buying a ticket to that show for real.

What does performing in Vegas mean to you?

MGM Grand 7 p.m. Oct. 15-20, 2227, 29-31, $80.36 plus tax and fee. ticketmaster.com

When you’re a magician, your dream is to do a show here. As cool as it’s been to travel the world, that’s what all of us have wanted since we were kids. To ... share it with people who have that same dream is so special.

What do you want audiences to leave feeling? The show runs through every emotion: serious and dangerous, funny and light, emotional. But the most important is childlike wonder. Whether you’re a kid, a parent or a grandparent, you get to sit back, get lost in a world where anything is possible, and feel like a kid again.

The weather’s great— go and experience Southern Nevada’s outdoor paradise By Genevie Durano Photography by Christopher DeVargas

Some of the most spectacular outdoor adventures in the American West are hiding in plain sight, just beyond the Strip’s glittering lights. From towering red rocks and snow-capped mountains to ancient petroglyphs and natural hot springs, the Las Vegas area offers an embarrassment of riches for those willing to trade the casino floor for a trail. Whether you’re looking for a morning hike or a multiday expedition into some of Nevada’s most remote wilderness, there’s a surprise at every turn.

Spring Mountain Ranch State Park

to find world-class outdoor recreation. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area sits just 17 miles west of the Strip, offering over 20 hiking trails that range from leisurely family strolls to challenging scrambles up towering sandstone formations. The 13-mile scenic drive provides awesome photo ops around every curve, while serious climbers tackle routes that have attracted adventurers from around the globe (hello, Free Solo-er Alex Honnold). Don’t miss the Calico Tanks trail—the panoramic views of the Vegas Valley from the top are simply incredible.

For a dose of history, Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, adjacent to Red Rock, offers a glimpse into Old West ranching life at the historic ranch where Howard Hughes once lived. You can explore preserved buildings, tackle easy hiking trails and occasionally catch living-history demonstrations in this picturesque mountain setting. When summer temperatures soar past 110 degrees in the valley, locals know exactly where to go: Mount Charleston. This high-elevation oasis boasts more than 60 miles of hiking trails winding through fragrant pine and aspen forests. Cathedral Rock is a must-do hike for all levels, but for those feeling ambitious, the 18-mile Charleston Peak—at 11,916 feet and the highest point in Southern Nevada—is a bucket-list feat. When the snow comes, these mountains are a sledding playground for kiddos and adults alike. Speaking of snow: Lee Canyon, adjacent to Mount Charleston, serves as Nevada’s premier ski destination. During winter months, you can hit the slopes for skiing and snowboarding, then return during warmer seasons for world-class mountain biking trails and chairlift rides that offer awesome views. Back in the valley, the Wetlands Nature Preserve is an unexpected urban oasis where boardwalks and trails wind through a thriving desert wetland ecosystem. It’s a birdwatcher’s paradise: Bring binoculars to spot herons, ducks and migratory birds—more than 200 species have been recorded. The miles of paved paths make it perfect for cycling, too.

Lake Mead

For prehistory buffs, check out Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area, one of the Southwest’s most significant petroglyph sites. More than 300 panels contain thousands of ancient rock art images, and the easy 1.1-mile interpretive trail leads to spectacular red sandstone formations—all just a short drive from Las Vegas. Water lovers should head to Willow Beach, where you can launch kayaks for a scenic paddle toward Hoover Dam or the stunning turquoise waters of Emerald Cove. The Colorado River here offers excellent rainbow trout fishing, while the beach area provides picnic spots and easy access for swimming. Of course, no discussion of Las Vegas water recreation would be complete without mentioning Lake Mead. America’s largest reservoir offers endless possibilities: Rent houseboats for multiday adventures from Callville Bay Marina; explore the lake by powerboat or jet ski from Las Vegas Boat Harbor at Hemenway Harbor; paddleboard in protected coves; swim at Boulder Beach; or explore hidden hot springs tucked into canyon walls. For a land-based adventure, hike or bike the Historic Railroad Trail. Five massive tunnels carved through the mountains in the 1930s during Hoover Dam’s construction now form a spectacular 3.7-mile trail with panoramic views of the lake below.

the adventures get even more spectacular. Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada’s oldest, showcases otherworldly landscapes of brilliant red sandstone formations and ancient petroglyphs. Key trails include Fire Wave for those Instagram-worthy shots, Mouse’s Tank for impressive rock art and White Domes for slot canyon exploration that feels like stepping onto another planet. For a genuine Wild West experience, head to Nelson, a ghost town where original buildings, vintage cars and mining equipment lie scattered throughout the landscape. The nearby Techatticup Mine offers fascinating underground tours into the area’s mining past. Road trip enthusiasts shouldn’t miss the ET Highway, Nevada’s most famous stretch of asphalt. This 98-mile section of Highway 375 cuts through desolate, weirdly beautiful desert landscape. Stop at the quirky Little A’Le’Inn in Rachel for a burger, keep your eyes peeled for UFOs and experience the vast, empty beauty of the Nevada desert. The highway runs along the infamous Area 51, the top-secret military installation that’s fueled decades of speculation and conspiracy theories.

the rewards are extraordinary. China Date Ranch serves as your gateway to Death Valley, where you can sample fresh dates, learn about desert agriculture and stock up on supplies before heading into one of America’s most extreme national parks. (The delicious date shakes alone are worth the trip.) Death Valley National Park itself offers experiences found nowhere else on Earth. Drive through Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America at

282 feet below sea level. Explore the colorful mineral deposits of Artist’s Palette, hike through dramatic Golden Canyon and slide down massive sand dunes. Camping under Death Valley’s star-filled skies ranks among the best outdoor experiences anywhere. For art lovers, stop in Beatty to visit the outdoor Goldwell Open Air Museum, featuring large-scale installations including the famous “Last Supper” sculpture. The small town also serves as another gateway to Death Valley. Finally, there’s Great Basin National Park, arguably Nevada’s crown jewel. Yes, it’s a five-hour drive from Vegas, but experiencing some of the darkest skies in the continental U.S. makes every mile worthwhile. During the day, explore the otherworldly Lehman Caves, hike to pristine alpine lakes or summit Wheeler Peak, Nevada’s second-tallest mountain. Fair warning: It’s a butt-kicker. Pack a tent—Wheeler Campground might just be the most beautiful campground in the entire state.

the lights of Las Vegas take on a different glow. Sure, the city knows how to put on a show, but the real spectacle lies just beyond the neon—in slot canyons and dark skies, ancient rock art and endless desert horizons.

Order this bit of buzz concocted with Stoli vodka, espresso and New Deal Coffee Liqueur, a spirit made from cold brew produced by Marigold Coffee, which is a Portland-based, women-owned, small-batch coffee roaster. Sip this sweet treat while enjoying any of the decadent desserts offered here. We highly recommend the triple lemon cake that comes with a totally delish amaretti cookie. I’m into that!

You could get a boring brew from Easy’s Donuts and Coffee, but something totally rad awaits in the tucked-away speakeasy that hides behind this stall in Proper Eats Food Hall. Once you find this hidden hot spot, order the Shroomin’, an absolutely stunning mixture of Botanist Gin, matcha, lemon and honey served in the neatest mushroom glasses on a smoking moss and mushroom board. You’ll definitely be posting this one in your after-travel photo dump.

Known for its signature (and award-winning) black sugar bubble tea, this beverage stall that sits across the walkway from Famous Foods Street Eats serves countless delights. For an ultra-rich energizer, sip this combination of coffee, tapioca pearls and creamy whipped topping. If that seems like a bit much for you, order half sweet and enjoy while you peruse the resort.

Just a quick pick-me-up is all I need.

How much

Caffeination

are you looking for?

Do you want to

Grab and go or Stay Awhile?

I’m not wasting my time in Vegas sitting in a coffee shop! Let’s keep it reasonable. I’ll pass for now.

I’d love to sit a spell, people-watch maybe.

are you looking for a ol’ cup of joe or something a little

Plain

fancier?

how do you feel about a sip that’s also a

Snack?

RIch or

Refreshing? I’d like something a little zhuzhed up.

Absolutely not, just a drink for me.

I’ll stick with something standard.

You’ll absolutely love this elevated take on a traditional mocha from this San Francisco “bean-to-bar” smallbatch chocolate maker. It’s made with European sipping chocolate and a double shot of espresso, topped with cocoa-nib whipped cream. Don’t forget to order a sweet snack from award-winning pastry chef Lisa Vega, who’s mastered that art of making high-quality chocolate with just two ingredients: cocoa beans and organic sugar.

Step up to this 24-hour coffee counter to taste the carefully crafted Zingerman’s Coffee, a Michigan-based brand that sources its beans globally and roasts them to perfection in small batches. Find all your café drink staples here, but we’d recommend embracing the simplicity of a single cup of brewed coffee so you can taste the various flavor notes that give Zingerman’s its incredible taste.

I’ll indulge, why not?

Something to cool down with sounds really nice.

Truth be told, Zeppola Café is a Las Vegas Magazine staff favorite, and for good reason. The quaint spot just off St. Mark’s Square is the perfect place to stop in, grab a pastry and a cuppa, and stay awhile. Order the London Fog, a tea latte made with sweetened Earl Grey and steamed milk, often flavored with vanilla or lavender.

Journey off-Strip to the ever-popular Chinatown area for this fruity find, made with oolong tea and flavored with honey-marinated ginger and a hint of raspberry. You could take your tea to-go, but once you step into the adorably appointed drinkery, you’ll surely want to stay awhile. Garden-like décor fills the industrial space, creating a perfect juxtaposition of urban and whimsical design and providing the perfect backdrop to socialize or scroll.
