Strip nightclub brings in world-class acts as part of new concert series

The summer just got even hotter in Las Vegas, as Resorts World Las Vegas launched its new concert series at Zouk Nightclub Resorts World Live at Zouk brings an eclectic and dynamic lineup to one of the city’s premier performance venues. You’ll want to get your tickets now to what are sure to be some of the hottest performances of the season.

Things get under way on Aug. 8 at 8 p.m. with a performance by 54 Ultra, aka Johnny Rodriguez, where musical

genres ranging from Latin soul, indie pop, synth pop and more get blended into an entirely unique sound that will have you dancing in no time.

Next up is country superstar Chris Janson, pictured, on Aug. 21 at 8 p.m. Not only has Janson risen to the top of the charts with singles like “Buy Me a Boat,” “Fix a Drink,” “Good Vibes” and “All I Need is You,” he’s written songs that have been hits for other artists, from Tim McGraw (“Truck Yeah”), LoCash (“How

I’ll Always Be”) and Hank Williams Jr. (“Love This Life”).

This dinner show delivers the excitement of a medieval fest

Put up your dukes! And wrap them around some chicken and corn while you let the performers in Tournament of Kings whisk you away to a bygone era.

Whether you’re headed to that age with your family or a group of friends, give yourself permission to let loose in a boisterous, slightly cheesy manner. (You are eating without utensils, for heaven’s sake!)

As in medieval times, Tournament of Kings combines a communitywide

celebration with contests of skill by a variety of knights, on horseback and in face-to-face combat. This tournament takes place in England, and King Arthur and his son Christopher preside. You are first given instruction by the jester and Merlin the magician on the proper manner of toasting with your stein (“Huzzah!”) and cheering on the king whose section you are seated in. Preceding the games, dancing ladies and knights party ’round the Round Table.

Jousting, swordplay, javelins and more show the skills of different nations. But soon, the evil fire wizard Mordred barges in on the show, leading his band of dragon knights in a full-fledged attack. Mordred’s pyrotechnic tricks create so much heat you can feel it in the stands!

Women’s

volleyball showcase promises plenty of fireworks

Women’s volleyball takes over the Las Vegas Strip for two days for the action-packed Players Era Volleyball Showcase, featuring four of the premium programs in the NCAA—Nebraska, Texas, TCU and UNLV.

Starting at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 29, the high-profile event opens with Texas vs. TCU. Then at 7 p.m., UNLV takes on Texas. On Aug. 30 is a marquee matchup: five-time NCAA champion Nebraska takes on five-time national champion Texas at 11:30 a.m., followed by TCU vs.

UNLV at 2 p.m.

The event is part of a new partnership between Players Era and MGM Resorts International and includes this tournament as well as: the Players Era 8 Men’s Tournament at Michelob Ultra Arena at Mandalay Bay from Nov. 17-19 (featuring Florida vs. Notre Dame, Houston vs. Rutgers, Kansas vs. UNLV and West Virginia vs. Auburn); the Players Era 16 Men’s Tournament at T-Mobile Arena from Nov. 24-27 (featuring Gonzaga vs. Kansas State, Baylor vs. Alabama, Michigan vs.

Creighton and TCU vs. Miami); and the Players Era 16 Men’s Tournament at Michelob Ultra Arena at Mandalay Bay from Nov. 24-28 (featuring Tennessee vs. Maryland, San Diego State vs. Iowa State, St. Johns vs. Oregon and Louisville vs. Texas Tech). Mandalay Bay comes alive with tunes—and the stories behind those tunes—during the Las Vegas Songwriters Festival , where nearly 90 of the business’ best songsmiths will perform at various venues throughout the property.

On Thursday, Aug. 20, you’ll enjoy a kickoff event at 8 p.m. featuring Craig Campbell (“Keep Them Kisses Comin’”), Jerrod Niemann (“What Do You Want”) and David Lee Murphy (“Dust on the Bottle”) at the House of Blues Music Hall. Then over Friday and Saturday, you’ll have plenty of juicy segments to dive into, including:

• Dean Dillon, presented by the Bluebird Cafe, at the House of Blues at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21. This performance is a re-creation of Nashville’s legendary Bluebird Cafe experience, and Dillon has written some of the most powerful songs in modern country, including “The Chair” (a massive hit for George Strait) and “Tennessee Whiskey” (a hit for several formidable artists).

• Liz Rose, Eric Paslay and Jim McCormick at The Cove at noon on Saturday, Aug. 22. Rose is one of the most prolific songwriters of the modern era, co-writing more than 17 of Taylor Swift’s songs, including “You Belong With Me,” “Teardrops on the Guitar” and “White Horse.” Paslay’s hits include “Friday Night” and “Song About a Girl,” while McCormick received a Song of the Year nomination from the Country Music Association for his 2020 song “The Good Ones.” –Ken Miller

Hidden entrances mark this supermarket’s intriguing secret

Cast aside all your notions on what a supermarket is before you decide to go shopping at Omega Mart . Or don’t. Your choice. But you may just find a lot more than you bargained for.

This enormous attraction by art collective Meow Wolf inside AREA15 starts with a basic supermarket with cartons of milk and nice steaks, but the more you look, the more things seem a little off. If you look closely enough, you’ll discover hidden entrances behind the freezers and coolers, leading to the enormous,

otherworldly “cyber-spiritual factory” and corporate headquarters of Dramcorp, the corporation behind Omega Mart.

Hundreds of mind-twisting art installations are packed into multiple levels, with neon-lit trees stretching their weird limbs over the concrete floor; a video projection show that ranges over a two-story, box canyon-like space; and door after door of rooms waiting to yield clues. Yes, if you feel like stretching your sleuthing muscles, gather information throughout the factory and the corporate

headquarters and figure out just why, how and where the workers have gone.

If the adults in your party feel the need for libations, the neon-washed Datamosh, a speakeasy at one end of the supermarket, serves up tasty drinks. And through Aug. 8, catch Phenomenomaly, a show with puppets, wild characters and talented performers ranging throughout the exhibition. –Nina King

The Sweet Escape

While this new attraction focuses on ice cream, there’s so much more to explore

This place may melt your mind—but the ice cream stays nice and frozen! The highly anticipated Museum of Ice Cream has opened its flagship location—and its largest—in Las Vegas at AREA15.

“It’s the largest, and formatted differently than any of the other experiences. It’s a new, fun thing for us. Normally it’s very linear, and this is the first museum where you can come in and explore whichever direction you would like. It’s been very exciting,” says Natalie Pryor, operations and development director for Museum of Ice Cream. “With Vegas, we really went all out. We’ve really honed this one in.” (By the way, just call her Praline! All museum employees go by their ice cream name. You might meet a Scoop Dogg or Post Macone!)

Trying to break down and write about the wonder that exists inside Museum of Ice Cream is near impossible— there are so many visuals and interactive elements from the moment you step inside the doors and continue to wind your way through multiple rooms.

This place is packed with goodies, and it’s so over-the-top fabulous that you’ll be planning your return visit as soon as you exit.

Some of the highlights—created with Vegas themes in mind—include two mock hotel suites, The Strawberry

Suite and The S’Mores Suite; the Lucky Cherry Ink Tattoo Parlor, where you can get temporary tattoos; the iconic sprinkle pool that you can slide into; and the Little Pink Chapel, designed like a tiered wedding cake.

Bartender J.J. Hernandez (ice cream name: Sweet Cherry Pie) created two divine cocktails, based on the two Vegas suites. The S’Mores Sweet is made with Tito’s Handmade vodka and Mr Black Cold Brew Coffee liqueur, shaken into a silky espresso martini and crowned with torched marshmallows, while the Strawberry Sweet is made with Casamigos tequila, Bacardi rum, Campari, falernum and grapefruit and strawberry purée. “All the specialty cocktails are a mix of childhood wonder and fun mixed with being an adult,” Hernandez says. And that’s exactly what the Museum of Ice Cream is all about—fun for the whole family or for that wild and crazy bunch of bachelors or bachelorettes. “Really the purpose of the museum is for you to be able to shed your outside self and just become like your inner child and have fun and play. It’s up to you how you play within our space and what journey is best for you to take,” Pryor says. –Kiko Miyasato

Jack Jewell

Life is going swimmingly for aquarium’s general curator

While Jack Jewell didn’t grow up near the ocean (he was born and raised in El Paso, Texas) and for the past two decades has lived in the middle of the desert, his whole life has been a love affair with aquatic animals. “I have been in love with fish my whole life,” he says. “I was always fascinated by the sea. It’s a lifelong love, it really is.”

And that love affair has guided his career. You can find Jewell surrounded by more than 1.6 million gallons of water smackdab in the middle of the desert at Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay, where he’s the general curator. He’s been with the aquarium—Nevada’s first and only facility accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums—since it opened in 2000.

Before settling in at Shark Reef, Jewell dealt in retail wholesale aquariums and tropical fish. Then he worked at Northern California’s massive Steinhart Aquarium as a freshwater aquarist before eventually joining a shark experience attraction near San Francisco. “That was the first time really working with sharks; I cut my teeth, so to speak, on sharks and learned how to care for them,” Jewell says. By 1998, he was looking to move out of California and, as luck would have it, he saw a job opening in Las Vegas, where he was hired as the aquarium supervisor for the massive lobby aquarium at the now-defunct The Mirage. “Then I heard they were opening

Shark Reef Aquarium Retail

At the end of exploring the Shark Reef Aquarium—from the jungle portion with one of the country’s oldest Komodo dragons (he’s 27!) to the aquarium tunnel where fish swim all around you to the shipwreck where sharks lurk around every corner— you’ll be able to take a piece of the experience home by grabbing some goodies at the retail store. Some of our favorite finds includes branded plushies, glowing globes and shark and turtle keepsakes. –KM

As the general curator, Jewell’s main job is to oversee all the subdepartments, which include animal care, life support and diving. Animal care is day-to-day tending to the animals; life support is the mechanical aspect ensuring they have everything for animals to survive; and diving includes maintaining the environment that is critical to the animals, making sure everything is operating properly, and that the aesthetics of the exhibits are taken care of.

Jewell’s favorite part of the job? “No, don’t make me choose,” he says, laughing. “There’s nothing that I don’t love about this job, so it’s so hard to choose. But I’ve said it before—there’s nothing like diving with the animals; diving in the big tank, the shipwreck where more than 28 sharks call home, including three sea turtles.” Jewell is a certified diver with more than 3,000 dives under his belt, as well as a certified dive instructor in and outside of Shark Reef. While it’s impossible to imagine Jewell not in, near or surrounded by water, he does have another love—music. For almost the same number of years as he’s been in love with aquatics, he’s been in love with music. For the past two decades, he’s played with an R&B and soul band as the singer and drummer. “When I fall in love with something I stick with it, as you can see,” he says, smiling. –Kiko Miyasato

When you head into Stubborn Seed by Jeremy Ford at Resorts World Las Vegas, the art deco-inspired space is sure to wow you— there’s a circular bar with a glamorous chandelier where you can indulge in predinner cocktails, a long, lush patio behind that and plush booths surrounding an intimate dining area. At one end is an open kitchen with an overhead art piece depicting a version of the Great Wave, Mount Fuji and more. Ford, a Top Chef winner (twice over) and the founder of the Michelin-starred Stubborn

Seed in Miami, is known for using a variety of innovative ingredients and techniques, combining flavors pulled from cuisines all over the globe. And if you aren’t familiar with some of the terms on the menu, don’t worry; we’ll try to help you out. Predinner cocktails are beautiful, but a drink in hand while deciding on dinner is pretty key. Here, the Kill Dill makes a refreshing sip that comes with a

kick, with Dolin Génépy le Chamois liqueur, plus the flavors of cucumber, dill syrup, Fresno pepper and lime. The liqueur here is comprised of several herbs, including génépy, an alpine artemisia with a strong flavor. It’s a little like Green Chartreuse.

an a la carte menu as well as a menu for show nights, excellent options for the Vegas visitor. On the a la carte menu, you’ll find items like the warm marinated olives with mint poblano pesto and Ibérico ham (the Spanish pig is fed entirely on acorns, and that shows in the taste of the meat); and Ibérico ham fritters with a smoked paprika emulsion.

The Westholme Australian wagyu striploin is a larger entrée that features black bean sofrito and cauliflower soubise, which is a bechamel with puréed vegetables blended in, resulting in a richer sauce. Another great option is the smoked beef rib with herb crepes, shiso, lime and gem lettuce (shiso is an herb with a minty, earthy flavor), sides of charred jerk carrots and Sichuan spiced tempura maitake mushrooms, both yielding spicy bites. The jerk carrots, with a smoky, hot, Jamaican-inspired taste, are especially delightful, and worth ordering a second time.

The tasting menu features six courses, with items such as a kalamata olive ciabatta with kalamata dust (yes, you can taste the olive in that preparation); the madai Veronique, sea bream with a sauce that traditionally includes grapes; and duck confit dumpling (confit is meat cooked in its own fat). You also have the opportunity to add on such items as a Kaluga caviar macaron or a Hudson Valley foie gras and black truffle tart.

If you are here for a show, that threecourse menu is perfect, with entrées including JJ’s Guilty Pleasure burger with smoked beef bacon (looks like pork, tastes like steak, it’s been said), with double patties and American cheese as well. You can also find it on the a la carte menu. The truffle organic chicken with pomme purée and a natural jus is a solid choice as well. Pomme purée? Well, it’s mashed potatoes, but so, so better.

“O” by Cirque du Soleil enthralls with its unique theatrical world

It’s like being inside a dream—but you’re awake. The visual feast of “O” by Cirque du Soleil blends the beautifully artistic with jaw-dropping circus acts, and it’s all done on top of, in and around water.

The show opened with Bellagio in 1998 and played up the theme of water (“eau” is French for “water”) to complement the property’s iconic fountains show. The theater houses a pool filled with 1.5 million gallons of water and reaches 25 feet deep. It all serves as the stage for the nearly 100 performers that include gymnasts, high divers, dancers, acrobats, trapeze artists, artistic swimmers and circus clowns. The show combines classic comedic circus acts with Olympiancaliber athletes performing deathdefying stunts in a series of vignettes that elicit feelings of awe, from the awfully funny to the absolutely stunning. (Fun fact: Of all the Strip Cirque productions, “O” has the highest contingent of Olympic athletes.)

The costuming and props add to the world of “O,” soaking each scene in dream-like visuals. Catch a man on fire, carousel horses trotting through the air, a giant floating ship taking sail and the top of a sinking house serving as a stage for clowns; all these scenes are over the top when filled with performers dressed in otherworldly costuming.

The giant pool isn’t the only play on water. Listen to the sounds of water dripping, watch rain fall and thunder clap, dancers kick up waves, synchronized swimmers bubble to the surface of the pool and divers jump from the rafters of the theater, splashing down into the water at top speeds.

Trying to figure out a plot that runs through “O” would be missing out on the pure enjoyment of what you’re watching. Just let the scenes unfold and be amazed by the amount of talent and athleticism and beauty and brawn that appears onstage. Sit back and watch as imagination flows through the theater, and at the end of the 90 minutes, the dreamscape you just witnessed will leave you soaked in awe.

Nearly 400,000 square feet of space offers distinct experiences, like shopping flagship stores of world-renowned brands, dining at first-to-market eateries and enjoying entertainment throughout the month on BLVD Las Vegas’ massive rooftop space, The Overlook.

Fashion lovers can visit Puma’s flagship store, where technology and style collide in a three-story retail experience that includes exclusive apparel, F1 racing simulators and a studio where shoppers can watch their designs come to life on select clothing and shoes. For nearly six years, Circa Resort & Casino has shone as the jewel of downtown Las Vegas—after all, it was the first casino-hotel built there from the ground up since 1980. So, it might be impossible at this point to find someone reading this that hasn’t visited Circa. But even so, we’ll bet that even though you’ve strolled around the joint, you might not know some fun or little-known facts (or even secrets!) about this hot spot. We’ve rounded up 10 of them for you. Check out this list to make your visit that much more exciting!

Vegas Vickie’s. You can’t miss the neon sign that presides over this lounge. Vegas Vickie is 25 feet tall and 20 feet wide, and was acquired by Circa owner Derek Stevens in 2015. But did you know that she debuted in downtown Vegas in 1980 and married famous neon sign Vegas Vic in 1994? They divorced in 2017. In 2020, Vickie got a refresh and was restored to her glory.

Barry’s Downtown Prime. Yes, come for the steak, but don’t miss the roaming cocktail cart where you can order a Manhattan or Old-Fashioned that’s created tableside (make sure to break out the camera for this one!). The restaurant offers a special vegan menu, too, with tons of yummy choices.

Mega Bar. It’s a behemoth drinking destination, spanning 165 feet. It’s Nevada’s longest indoor bar. But did you know it’s secretly called Girth Bar? The online Vegas community jokingly called it “the girthiest bar” in town. Stevens decided to embrace the joke and put a plaque that reads “Girth Bar” on the west

Stadium Swim.

Yes, the ginormous screen is the focal point, but there’s outdoor gaming here, too. Sit down at one of a handful of tables in a shaded area and play a few rounds of blackjack.

Stadium Swim (fact No. 2). While other pools close as soon as the sun starts to set, this massive pool complex keeps its doors open till 11 p.m. 365 days a year.

Crazy Girls statue. The bronze statue was unveiled at the Riviera in 1997 to support the topless show Crazy Girls. After the property closed, the statue was put in storage till Stevens purchased it. It now lives at the entrance to Legacy Club and is known to bring guests good luck if you give one of the derrieres a rub.

In a Las Vegas Magazine story earlier this year, Jen Kramer explained what her chosen profession means to her, and what it means to her audiences. “Magic evokes wonder. It makes you feel like you’re 5 years old again,” said the magician. It’s that sense of wonder that you will find permeating The Magic of Jen Kramer at Westgate Las Vegas, where the Yale graduate has performed her fun, family-friendly show almost every weekend since 2018 at the resort.

After a short slideshow that introduces her and impresses with her credentials, the first trick begins. Onstage, you may have noticed an elevator, shiny and just a little cartoonlike, with the up arrow on the eighth floor. A pair of trusty assistants demonstrate the car is empty,

then the doors close, the arrow heads to the first floor, and out pops the magician! Then Kramer proceeds into a quickchange routine, donning about a dozen outfits in rapid succession.

During the rest of the show, you’ll witness the bits in Kramer’s show winding around one another and looping back in for final reveals. One audience member’s hundred-dollar bill disappears mysteriously. Will he ever see it again? Aah, it reappears during a game show segment. When Kramer points out a locked box high overhead, you wonder what it could contain, but she gives no clues. Later, she draws a small volunteer onstage, giving her a key to guard. A comedic bit has audience member Kye attempting to avoid eye contact with Kramer. He fails, and up he goes to be

the profile pic in a huge social media page, where the crowd names his wife, his number of followers and his likes. Another volunteer experiences a magical connection with Kramer, as the blindfolded magician correctly identifies several beverages the volunteer sips. It’s that type of connection that makes Kramer’s job so rewarding.

“To me, it’s about genuine human connection—it transcends age, language, everything. I’ve done trips with Magicians Without Borders to rural India and Central America, performing for people where we don’t share a single word of language. And magic still connects us. That universality is something I’m endlessly captivated by,” Kramer told Las Vegas Magazine.

If you’ve been to Vegas a few times, then you may have seen Jabbawockeez advertised on the marquees of a variety of hotels, including the MGM Grand, where the dance crew’s latest show, FREQNCY, plays every night.

The central theme of FREQNCY is that

humanity, life, the universe, everything, operates with unique frequencies and that we are connected through those frequencies. It’s a powerful idea and translates perfectly in the light-, musicand dance-filled production, as perfect for kids as it is for adults. In FREQNCY,

like the previous show incarnation, TIMELESS, the music crisscrosses multiple genres, and dancers throw in moves from multiple styles as well.

masks and colorful jumpsuits that every member wears during the show, keeping the emphasis on the dance and not the individual. And the Jabbawockeez have that down, with synchronous routines that have every dancer matching the moves of the others. That isn’t to say you won’t see differences in each dancer; it’s that those dancers work as a unit.

Each dance routine features a different type of music, from hip-hop to rock ’n’ roll, with costumes, dynamic graphic projections and lighting evoking each era. There are fight scenes, athletic scenes, romantic scenes—and that brings us to audience participation. In several fun bits, Jabbawockeez throws the spotlight on an audience member, making a girl or boy the

focus of a basketball-themed shooting contest. (Will they make it? Of course!)

A young woman is drawn onstage in a number that goodheartedly pokes a little fun at male dancers, but with fabulous choreography and synchronicity as well. In one Soul Train-inspired segment, the dancers are dressed in different-colored suits, with appropriate choreography. The rock routine captures the zeitgeist of the ’80s with a few wigs and a lot of energy. You’ll even see a dance-off between staff members, which is totally awesome—

they’ve got some great moves.

Some of the most intense parts of the show come as a mini laser light show is created in the theater, and the dancers interact with the lines and shapes created. One dancer is captured in the center of a cone of light rays, and every move happens inside that tight, tight cone. Similarly, the dancer captures and plucks rays of lights like a guitar string, matching the movements of the rays in an awesome, completely captivating display of skill.

The fight scenes allow the ferocity of the music to increase, and this time the dancers are clad in black jumpsuits and altered masks. Jarring frequencies accompany the dance, creating almost a battle between good and bad (setting up a scene where all the dancers perform in harmony).

Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the breakdancing scene or a casual music fan, Jabbawockeez’ FREQNCY will definitely give you a feel-good sense of unity with the universe as well.
