An iconic figure in a world-famous photo now has a name, thanks to the relentless research of this Las Vegas historian
Atomic Museum Vegas offers a deep dive into this part of Vegas’ storied history, and last year it unveiled a new exhibit centered around Anna Lee Mahoney, more famously known as Miss Atomic Bomb, whose likeness was widely recognizable but whose identity remained anonymous until historian Robert Friedrichs solved the mystery.
What prompted your 25-year-long search for Miss Atomic Bomb’s true identity?
When they were building the museum, they talked about using that photo for marketing purposes. I thought it would really be neat if she were still alive and we were able to contact her, have her come to the opening and let her see how important that photo has been for the development of Las Vegas. Unfortunately … she had passed away before that decision was made. So it’s not 25 years (gone to) waste, but it’s nice to have the recognition finally documented and out there.
Why is it so important that this figure has a name?
I thought that her family needed to know. Unfortunately, she had no children. She was married, but her husband had passed away a few years before her. In doing the research, trying to track her down, we were looking at combinations of names … We lucked out when we were working with a combination and found a cousin’s daughter. The mother and the daughter are still
alive, and I had included the pictures in the letter that I sent, explaining the fact that we were trying to get an identification on her … She unfortunately didn’t have any (pictures) and I asked her, what was her maiden name? That’s when everything broke loose. That’s when we got her birth certificate, we got her Social Security record, and on the Social Security record, another name associated with that number was Lee Merlin (her stage name).
Can you recall seeing Miss Atomic Bomb used widespread, or was this one marketing instance that just took off?
Actually, they didn’t use that photo in the first press release. They used a different one, and it was a small picture in one newspaper. Then they went out with this one, and that’s the one the public went crazy over ... And the other issue is that this is such a controversial picture. People have written articles on it and said that she was nude, except for the mushroom cloud. You can see the swimsuit, but people’s imagination just ran with it, and that is considered one of the 100 best photos ever taken.
After receiving additional pictures of Lee Merlin from Don English, who took the photo, how did you go about face-matching her appearances around Las Vegas?
UNLV Special Collections. They’d bring out the boxes, and I’d just go through them and they’d copy anything I want-
ed. And so that’s where I first learned about the stage names. That really made me stop and think, “Okay, I see a name here. It’s a stage name. It looks too English.” That’s when I started looking at alternatives and trying to sort through that maze. And that’s why I was only 85% sure until I actually saw that Social Security record where she had her married name, her maiden name, and Lee Merlin in the middle.
Did you release her maiden name or her married name?
Her maiden name. And she had moved back to New York after leaving (Las Vegas). And that’s where she met her husband, who was a horn player. I think he was a trumpet (player) in various bands, and they moved to Hawaii. They lived there for many years and he had his own business. When he passed away, she sold the business, sold the house they were in, if they owned it, and then she moved back to Pennsylvania for a short time then moved out to Santa Cruz.
Before we leave, a question that’s really been on our minds: Was there a sort of fear of something going awry at the Nuclear Test Site, since residents had to wear dog tags with their blood type on them and whatnot?
It wasn’t fear. The average person looked at it as helping Las Vegas grow. And they wouldn’t (detonate) it if the wind was blowing this way. That was the agreement, it would go to the lowest population areas to the East and North. So that was a strategic decision that the minimum number of people could potentially be exposed at any given time. –Em Jurbala
Bartenders go head-to-head to create the best martini
Tins will clink, alcohol will flow, garnishes will be speared and creativity is on display as top bartenders compete in Martini Masters on June 19 from 8-10 p.m. inside the speakeasy at Caspian’s Rock & Roe And you can be right in the middle of it all, as the competition takes place in front of the crowd.
In honor of National Martini Day, Caspian’s has set up a bracket-style competition with eight Vegas bartenders who will create up to three martinis that
show off their signature style. Each round should last about eight minutes, and judging takes place after each round. First up is the best espresso martini, then a briny martini, and the final round is a martini of each bartender’s choice, but it must include the secret ingredient. The winner will be awarded $2,500!
Guests get to witness all the tin-tossing, spirit-shaking fun while the DJ will keep the vibes hyped. When the competition ends around 10:30 p.m., the night’s
headlining band takes the stage and Caspian’s offers guests classic martini cocktails for just $20 each throughout the night.

San Francisco native Federico Flores has worked for Disneyland, Universal Studios, Cirque du Soleil and various Las Vegas attractions like SlotZilla and FLY LINQ Zipline, in roles that include dancing, acting, management and creative.
But what has been his favorite role? “This, this is my favorite job out of all the jobs I’ve had.” Wow! Flores is the guest service associate at Omega Mart at AREA15.
“It’s about the connection; when you are connecting one on one with people it’s much more powerful,” he said.
He joined Meow Wolf, the artist collective that built Omega Mart, almost four years ago, and his job is to “connect the guest to the Meow Wolf experience, the artists and the deep narrative that is going on at (Omega Mart),” Flores said. “I elevate the experience.” He’s elevated it so much that he has also become the game master, a position that went viral a few years ago. “I deepen the narrative and deepen the connection to the artists, the art and this experience as a whole.”

I admit to being a little confused by German. Just when I think I’ve figured it out, then I haven’t. If you’re like that, lucky you, because at Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas that confusion won’t apply (’cause it’s translated on the menu!).
The experience at Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas is unlike any other in Las Vegas, with an exterior that is an exact replica of the original Hofbräuhaus in Munich, with window boxes, dormers and more. Inside, the beer hall has archways and painted ceilings, plus long tables and benches. It screams authentic! A fountain, patio seating and trees set the scene in the indoor biergarten. Speaking of authentic, get yourself a beer. Hofbräuhaus brews six beers in Munich that are imported to Vegas—three classics that are available
year-round and three specialty beers, including the HB Dunkel Weizen, a dark wheat beer. Each beer has suggested pairing for your food. For example, order a stein of HB Original lager and pair it with salads, roasted pork and light foods. The malty HB Dunkel may go better with a sausage platter.
Once you’ve got that beverage, get an appetizer or two. The Kartoffelpuffer is fried potato cakes with salmon. Great sharing dishes include the cheese plate with crackers, buttered rye bread and chives or the Brotzeiteller, which brings in the meats—cold cuts and cold roast pork with accompaniments of cheese, rye bread, gherkins and house-made mustard. Pretzels seem particularly German, and you can get them a few different ways and sizes, including a giant one with cheeses and mustards.
For your mains, there are plenty of choices, like Jägerschnitzel, a traditional German breaded pork cutlet covered in mushroom sauce. There are several bread pork cutlets on the menu, each with different sides and presentation, like the Schnitzel Weiner Art, a pork cutlet with cranberries and house-made Bavarian potato salad (which is a whole different ballgame than American-style potato salad). You can get it in a pork sausage sandwich, which is like a hot
dog but served on French bread with sauerkraut and onion mustard. The huge chicken breast sandwich sees the schnitzel hanging over a kaiser roll.
There’s a whole section of the menu devoted to sausage, too, with chicken,
pork, veal and white (veal and pork mixed), plus currywurst, which is sliced Krainer sausage (you’ll find cheese in these) in a curry sauce, and even a grilled sausage loaf.
Vegans and vegetarians can find schnitzel, frankfurters and hunter-style meatballs, while kids can get schnitzel fingers, so no one’s getting left out. Apple strudel with warm vanilla sauce or decadent Black Forest cake will finish the meal off deliciously.
If D ad wants German food and/or beer on Father’s Day, he’s in luck! Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas is serving a special Father’s Day (Vatertag) menu, with such items as Bayerische Gulaschsuppe (Bavarian goulash); the HB smokehouse platter with sausage, pork loin and sauerkraut; and apple bread pudding with ice cream. New Kids on the Block announced its 2026 Las Vegas extended residency dates last fall with a mock wedding ceremony at the Little White Wedding Chapel, vows and all. If this is what a long-term Vegas
commitment looks like, the fans are absolutely here for it.
And so are the numbers. Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood, Jon Knight, Jordan Knight and Joey McIntyre set up shop at Dolby Live at Park MGM with The Right Stuff in 2025, and it has grown into a fullblown love affair: 24 performances total this year, running June 19 through July 4 and again Oct. 2–17.
The inaugural residency ran for 16 shows, and due to overwhelming demand from their fans, affectionately known as Blockheads, the
group had no choice but to extend the run. Who can say no to thousands of screaming and gyrating fans who still know every word of “Step by Step,” “Hangin’ Tough” and “You Got It (The Right Stuff)”—and aren’t shy about showing it?
“What we’ve built here in Vegas, together with our incredible Blockheads, feels truly magical,” Wahlberg said during the extension announcement.

These are the guys who ran a fan club with more than 200,000 members and a hotline fielding 100,000 calls a week at their peak— in the early ’90s, before the internet made that kind of fan access look easy. The group has sold more than 80 million records worldwide. That DNA runs all the way through this residency, right down to the meetand-greets held on the stage itself, the backstage tours and the preshow
VIP lounges. Blockheads have always gone above and beyond for these five, and NKOTB goes above and beyond right back.
Add the band’s latest album, Still Kids, released in May 2024 and its first new music in more than a decade, and the picture is complete: a group fully committed, putting in the work and building something that can only be experienced here.
So, yes, they married Vegas. And if the sold-out nights and steadily growing run are any indication, it’s a very happy union.
