The beginning of May is a special time of year in Las Vegas. For starters, the weather is still borderline perfect (still a few weeks before those sweltering summer temps creep in); then there’s Cinco de Mayo celebrations, as well as Mother’s Day. Making a Barry Welcome Return

After a health scare, performer returns to host property to continue making history

In late December, Barry Manilow’s fans were stunned to learn that the beloved performer was battling lung cancer and was canceling his shows. But the cancerous spot was removed in a surgical procedure, and Manilow is back on the Westgate Las Vegas stage to show just how recovered—and re-energized—he is.

In a statement delivered on several platforms including Instagram and X, Manilow said that in an MRI scheduled to follow up after bronchitis recovery, a cancerous spot was discovered on his left lung.

“It’s pure luck and (a great doctor) that it was found so early,” he said. “In the meantime, I’m counting the days until I return to my home away from home at the Westgate Las Vegas.”

He also delivered his own PSA: “And remember, if you have even the slightest symptom, get tested!”

Manilow’s record-setting run at the International Theater (he passed Elvis Presley’s record of 637 shows in 2023, meaning every show sets a new bar) will continue as long as the performer wants to; he was recently given a lifetime contract at the property.

His connection with crowds is a huge part of his appeal. Yes, you get those amazing songs that never seem to age, from “I Write the Songs,” “Looks Like We Made It,” “Mandy” and “Copacabana,” but Manilow’s relationship with his fan base is what really puts his shows over the top. I still remember grinning from ear to ear when Manilow, really feeling the love from the audience, shouted out, “Let’s close the doors and order a pizza!”

This year’s shows are likely to be highly emotional, as support for Manilow came in from all over the globe upon hearing the startling news. In fact, it may be a bit difficult getting a ticket!

But fret not! Manilow is scheduled for many more shows this year, including May 7-9 and 14-16, July 9-11 and 16-18, Aug. 20-22 and 27-29, Sept. 17-19 and 24-26, Oct. 8-10 and 15-17, Nov. 5-7 and 12-14, and, of course, his Christmas shows (A Very Barry Christmas) on Dec. 3-5, 10-12 and 17-19. –Ken Miller

New midday meal deal on the Strip is a must-try

Don’t feel like taking a long, leisurely lunch? Are you in town for a conference and only have an hour to eat before getting back to the convention hall? We’ve got you covered, no problem! Estiatorio Milos brings a new twist to its weekday prix fixe menu, and the Greek restaurant is calling it the “Quick and Delicious Business Lunch.” The offer is a guaranteed 60-minute experience or less for $45—or it’s on them. Yup, a full lunch, three courses, beginning to end, and you’re out the door before the hour ends or the tab gets picked up by the restaurant. (Note: You can’t push the time on purpose, peeps—respect the deal!)

Not only is this a great deal, but the restaurant that prides itself on innovative and classic Greek cuisine really comes in clutch with the offerings—everything is delicious and the presentation is chef’s kiss … and three courses for just $45!?

The choices per course (first, second and dessert) all sound, taste and look delicious. First course faves include the Greek-style ceviche, chargrilled octopus and the authentically perfect Greek salad. Second course offerings include roasted organic chicken breast, tuna burger and whole grilled Mediterranean sea bream, all coming out looking and smelling amazing. Vegetarians, listen up! Don’t think this meal deal will fit your dietary guidelines? You’re oh so wrong. This writer is a vegetarian and has to say it’s one of the best lunches I’ve experienced on the Strip. Just tell your server you’re a vegetarian and the lovely courses of nonmeat and fish dishes will impress. My first-course fave was the filling mezze platter with its different dips, pita, dolmas, vine-ripe heirloom tomatoes and olives, and the second course was a pasta with seasonal veggies and to-die-for red sauce.

There are lunch cocktails, wines and mocktails available for an extra price. Don’t pass up the hazelnut iced coffee, though, made with Lavazza espresso, almond milk, honey and hazelnut. –

Surfing in the Desert?

Strip property offers ocean wave-creating attraction

Hang ten, dudes! FlowRider, Inc. created a simulated surfing experience with its FlowRider Wave in a Box technology, and Las Vegas guests can try out the unique attraction at Planet Hollywood.

“The goal is to bring the thrill of riding a wave to anyone, anywhere in the world,” said owner Tom Lochtefeld on the company’s website.

Goal achieved! Head up to Planet Hollywood’s Scene Pool Deck, where you’ll find FlowRider. You must be 13+ to ride and the cost is $34.99 per person for a 30-minute

experience. You can purchase an all-day pass, too, if you want to ride multiple times throughout the day.

A pro instructor will assist in your surfing adventure. If you’re new to surfing or even a seasoned rider, safety concerns of wiping out can be put to rest with FlowRider’s tension ride surface—built like a trampoline so falls are absorbed and easy on the body. And those waves! FlowRider’s genius is that the artificial waves actually mimic real-life ocean waves—you can even do barrel rolls (if you dare)! Riders must be

able to swim; you must also be 42 inches to ride bodyboard style and 48 inches to surf standing up.

Where to party in Vegas this Cinco de Mayo week

The Cinco de Mayo holiday has become somewhat of a novelty celebration in the U.S., but the date marks an historic battle for the Mexican army who defeated the French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Now Vegas marks the special day all week long with good food, drinks and parties, Mexican style—and there’s plenty of hot spots to commemorate the occasion.

On May 5, stop by Proper Bar at Proper Eats Food Hall at Aria, and for just $24 enjoy all-you-can-drink margaritas and tequila pours (two-hour

time limit). Extras include $8 freshmade churros and a roaming mariachi band from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

On Thursday, May 7, head to ¡VIVA! By Ray Garcia at Resorts World Las Vegas for La Vida Latin Nights from 6-11 p.m. The patio transforms into an open-air nightclub with live music, DJ and dancefloor with Latin and Mexican beats. Mary J. Blige shares her life and story in her first Vegas residency

In 34 years of performing, Mary J. Blige has never had a Las Vegas residency. Starting May 1, she does.

The show is called Mary J. Blige: My Life, My Story The Las Vegas Residency, and everything about that title more than earns its weight. The nine-time Grammy winner and 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee arrives at Dolby Live at Park MGM with 10 performances spread across May and July.

“Creating a show like this has been something I’ve always wanted to do,” Blige has said. “It’s a chance to get my fans together from all over—different cities, states and countries—to experience something together. My Life, My Story will be just that—with some surprises for my fans that have been there through it all.”

Those fans have been there since 1992. Blige’s debut album, What’s the 411?, introduced the world to a young woman from Yonkers, N.Y. who could fuse hip-hop and soul in a way nobody had quite managed before—raw and radio-ready at the same time, speaking directly to a generation that wanted honesty in its music. The record that followed, 1994’s My Life, is the album that tends to live deepest in people. Eleven tracks of unguarded emotion, drawn from a difficult period in Blige’s own life and transformed into something that felt communal. Critics called it a masterpiece; fans called it essential. A lot of us were going through a lot, and we went through it with Blige on repeat.

It started with the theater company’s first show, the hilariously raunchy variety show Absinthe, at Caesars Palace in 2011, followed by the equally bawdy (but this time Western-themed) Atomic Saloon Show at The Venetian Resort in 2019. Spiegelworld’s over-the-top, bacchanalianlike shows keep theatergoers engaged from beginning to end—each one with its own singular theme and partylike atmosphere. The uniquely tasting cocktail is a mix of gin, yuzu, Midori, lime, matcha and cucumber.

“Pier 17, this place is an homage to the beginnings of Spiegelworld and Absinthe, specifically,” Novick says. “Spiegelworld was founded in 2006, and Absinthe is still our flagship show; that’s when it started, on Pier 17 in New York. When you look around the room, all the pictures are from that time in New York. It’s a place that we made for ourselves. … (It’s) cheeky and fun with a nautical theme; we use that as the foundation for the cocktails.” Start with the Banana Boat, a blend of vodka with infused vanilla, sake, banana liqueur, lemon juice and orgeat. “It’s bananas on banana,” he says. “The banana really punches through. It has that tropical vacation feel to it like a colada would.” Another must-try, a favorite of Novick’s, is the Negroni Colada. “It’s more a colada than Negroni but with

the Negroni as its inspiration,” he says. “It combines the two worlds. It’s dry with bitter components, but it’s not just a sweet tropical smorgasbord of ingredients.” The sweet and bitter drink is mixed with mezcal, Diplomático rum, Campari, lemon juice, rhum agricole, Suze liqueur and pineapple juice. Pier 17 offers both indoor and outdoor spots to chill, and you can also order up some eats, a blend of high-brow and low-brow bites like tots with caviar and the No Pants Burger with short rib patties and secret sauce.

Blake Shelton is back for more country, more cocktails, more Vegas

When Blake Shelton returned to Vegas earlier this year, he wasn’t tiptoeing back into Las Vegas. He’s barreled in with a beer in one hand and a setlist in the other. After a successful run early last year, the star returned to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace with a smoking run, and that’s continuing through the rest of this month.

“We had so much fun..., I figured—why not do it again?” Shelton has said. “This time we’re gonna do it more country, with more cocktails, and probably make a few more questionable decisions. Let’s go, Vegas.”

This is the kind of confidence that’s made Shelton one of country music’s most bankable stars. With 30 No. 1 hits and nearly 11 billion global streams, he’s earned the right to show up in Vegas and do things his way. And fans are more than ready to make those questionable decisions right alongside him.

The residency comes at a particularly hot moment for Shelton.

His latest album, For Recreational Use Only, dropped in May. It’s his first full-length release in nearly four years. The 12-track collection includes chart-topper “Texas” and current radio hit “Stay Country or Die Tryin’,” which both capture Shelton’s ability to balance traditional country sensibilities with arena-ready hooks. The album also features appearances by his wife, Gwen Stefani, along with veterans John Anderson and Craig Morgan.

For his Vegas shows, Shelton delivers an undeniable honkytonk vibe. His performances feel more like Saturday night at your favorite dive bar—if that dive bar happened to seat 4,300 people and feature world-class production. Fans can expect a powerhouse set drawing from three decades of hits, mixed with fresh material from the new album. Songs like “Honey Bee,” “God’s Country” and “Austin” share space with newer tracks, delivered in his signature raucous energy that transforms even The Colosseum’s Roman grandeur into something that feels authentically country.

Maverick Helicopters offers a wide variety of spectacular experiences

If you think it’s impressive to walk down the Strip and bathe in the neon lights, it’s nothing like getting a bird’s-eye view of this glittering oasis from a few thousand feet up.

Maverick Helicopters has been giving people an unparalleled view of Las Vegas and its surrounding natural wonders for three decades. One of its most popular tours is the Wind Dancer Sunset flight, which takes guests to the Grand Canyon with a sunset return over the neon lights of the Strip. You get the best of both worlds: the natural beauty of one of the seven natural wonders and the manmade spectacle of Las Vegas.

A Maverick tour starts at its Las Vegas terminal, just past the iconic Welcome to Las Vegas sign. On this particular ride, I’m one of seven passengers aboard an ECO-Star helicopter, its wraparound windows built

for sightseeing. Our pilot, Seth, breaks the ice by asking if this is our first time on a helicopter. A few raise their hands, to which Seth replies, “Me, too.” We laugh

of lights and roads. The commercial planes at the airport look like colorful matchsticks. Seth puts on a playlist: Creed’s “Higher” seems apropos. My nervously, but in truth, Seth has done this flight over a thousand times.

Then we take our seats and strap in. Below, the city becomes a tidy grid

fellow passengers get their iPhones ready.

The helicopter passes over Lake Las Vegas, then glides over Hoover Dam, its smooth arc of concrete gleaming against Lake Mead. Seth points out the dam’s nearly century-old engineering, the Arizona-Nevada divide, the demarcation where Lake

Mead meets the Colorado River. (They are different colors, due to the river’s sediment-heavy waters versus the lake’s clearer, bluer water.)

About 45 minutes in, the ground begins to fracture into ridges and shadows, and then the Grand Canyon opens before us—what Seth calls “the big

reveal”—a sweep of color and space so expansive that conversation comes to a complete halt. The helicopter traces a path through more than 10 miles of canyon walls, their reds and browns deepening in the late-day light.

Seth descends 3,500 feet to a private landing site on Hualapai Indian Territory. Here, 300 feet above the Colorado River, we step out into stillness. Champagne is poured, light snacks set out. We disperse to explore. There is something holy about this land. Its vastness is humbling.

When the flight resumes, the sun is lowering toward the horizon and we rise and turn westward. We see the Bowl of Fire glowing with red rock formations; Lake Mead catches the last of the light.

As twilight deepens, the Las Vegas Valley appears

ahead, a faint shimmer at first, then a glittering sprawl. The Strip begins to glow as we descend. We see famous landmarks, and from above, Allegiant Stadium is so small that it could easily be mistaken for an office building. The Sphere looks like a child’s shiny toy. The entire trip has lasted just under four hours, but it feels longer, as if time has bent somewhere over the canyon.

Maverick offers several tours—night flights above the Strip, scenic loops over Red Rock Canyon, other trips to the Grand Canyon—but the Wind Dancer Sunset Tour is something special. It’s less about thrill-seeking than perspective, the quiet realization that some experiences are best measured not by distance, but by how small and lucky they make you feel.

Kathleen Madigan does just one thing—make people laugh

In an era where entertainers are expected to be multihyphenate content machines, Kathleen Madigan has built her career on something increasingly rare: being exceptionally good at standup comedy. Over more than three decades, she’s refined her craft in front of live audiences, and this week, she brings her Day Drinking Tour to the Strip.

Coming from a long line of Midwestern union workers, Madigan approaches her craft the way her family approached their jobs: show up, do the work, do it well. “I just wanted to tell jokes,” she said in an exclusive interview with Las Vegas Magazine, and that singular focus keeps her constantly moving.

Unlike most people who’d find the road exhausting, Madigan thrives on the variety. She gets bored staying in one place too long, driven by curiosity to “check out what’s going on” wherever she lands next. After decades of touring, she’s developed a connoisseur’s appreciation for American cities and their quirks.

Ask about her favorites and she lights

up talking about New Orleans, Charleston, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia. “I must have had a past life as a swamp person,” she said, explaining her love for New Orleans’ unique blend of Catholic guilt, vampires, saints and incredible food. Meanwhile, she sometimes grows weary of the homogenization plaguing many cities. “Every city’s got it—here’s your strip mall, here’s TJ Maxx, here’s Applebee’s.”

One exception? Vegas. “I can leave Vegas alone for six months and come back and something new will already be built,” she said. “You guys move faster than anyone. As far as change goes, zero respect for history, which I do find kind of funny.”

That observational edge carries into her material. Madigan’s most recent special, Hunting Bigfoot, was named 2023 Comedy Special of the Year by The Interrobang, following her chart-topping Netflix release Bothering Jesus, which became the highest-selling album and most played comedy album on streaming services since 2015.

But success in comedy extends beyond generating laughs—it demands a type of business acumen that doesn’t always come naturally to creative minds. Madigan notes the surreal experience of signing documents as “president, CEO” of her own corporation. “This country allowed me to do that,” she said with a laugh.

If circumstances were different, Madigan envisions owning a bar called Madigan’s, combining her love of bartending, social interaction and sports. When her father questioned whether she’d want to be a 50-year-old bartender, she corrected him: “No, I want to be a 50-year-old bar owner.”

But comedy chose her, and her material springs from the endless gold mine of family life and everyday absurdities. Growing up one of seven kids provided what she calls “a lot to pull from,” and she feels sorry for comedians without siblings who missed out on that built-in material factory. Currently, she’s mining the universal experience of dealing with aging parents, particularly the realization that her parents never actually planned for old age. As a friend pointed out to her, “Their plan was us.”

For Vegas visitors seeing her May show, Madigan promises the same reliable formula that’s sustained her career: Midwest family stories, observations about everyday life and wisdom that comes from watching the world with sharp eyes and an even sharper wit. Historian Robert Friedrichs discusses solving the mystery behind an iconic photograph

It’s hard to imagine a spectacle that could top showgirls and Sinatra in 1950s Las Vegas, but the Nevada Test Site, where nuclear weapons testing produced fascinating mushroom clouds viewable

from casino rooftops, drew curious visitors to the city in droves. Atomic Museum Vegas offers a deep dive into this part of Vegas’ storied history, and it has unveiled a new exhibit centered around Anna

Lee Mahoney, more famously known as Miss Atomic Bomb, whose likeness was widely recognizable but whose identity remained anonymous until historian Robert Friedrichs solved the mystery.

When they were building the museum, they talked about using that photo for marketing purposes. I thought it would really be neat if she were still alive and we were able to contact her, have her come to the opening and let her see how important that photo has been for the development of Las Vegas. Unfortunately … she had passed away before that decision was made. So it’s not 25 years (gone to) waste, but it’s nice to have the recognition finally documented and out there.

I thought that her family needed to know. Unfortunately, she had no children. She was married, but her husband had passed away a few years before her. In doing the research, trying to track her down, we were looking at combinations of names … We lucked out when we were working with a combination and found a cousin’s daughter. The mother and the daughter are still alive, and I had included the pictures in the

letter that I sent, explaining the fact that we were trying to get an identification on her … She unfortunately didn’t have any (pictures) and I asked her, what was her maiden name? That’s when everything broke loose.

That’s when we got her birth certificate, we got her Social Security record, and on the Social Security record, another name associated with that number was Lee Merlin (her stage name).

Oh, yes. When you have no name other than a stage name … that still doesn’t get you anything, you know? So we really were lucky. I did a presentation (at Atomic Museum) on the different iterations of Miss Atomic … and at the end of the lecture I always would say, “Now, are you ready to help me find out who it is?”

And lo and behold, there was a DRI (Desert Research Institute) employee that was sitting in the back of the room. She immediately went upstairs and started searching, and she found an obituary that indicated (Merlin) had been a showgirl at the Sands Hotel … and that struck a bell for me. That one comment would lead me to who her dance instructor was … who identified that she was in California at the key time period where Lee Merlin

was popping up in news articles and photos as being there … and she was registered as a voter with her stage name. It was just pure coincidence that I had asked that question.

Actually, they didn’t use that photo in the first press release. They used a different one, and it was a small picture in one newspaper. Then they went out with this one, and that’s the one the public went crazy over ... And the other issue is that this is such a controversial picture. People have written articles on it and said that she was nude, except for the mushroom cloud. You can see the swimsuit, but people’s imagination just ran with it, and that is considered one of the 100 best photos ever taken.
