The Great Outdoors
Strip Italian restaurant has an incredible patio dining experience Some of my favorite dining experiences have been outside. There’s just nothing that can compare with combining a great meal with fresh air and the sun shining down on you. And with wonderful weather currently the norm in Southern Nevada, there’s no better time to take advantage of outdoor dining opportunities. One of the best on the Strip can be found at Brezza, Nicole Brisson’s Italian restaurant that celebrates heritage and family in a bright, fun setting. If seating is available, make your way through the main dining room and head to the Terrazza Patio, a 120-capacity space next to a garden with fantastic views of the Strip. As you enjoy the temperature-controlled space, get ready for a memorable meal from start to finish. If you’re here for lunch, start off with signature cocktails like the Sanguinello, a combo of Skyy blood orange vodka, Bols mango liqueur, Cointreau, blood orange and lemon. Then make your way to salad selections like the Brezza “Caesar,” smothered with Parmigiano, croutons and an anchovy vinaigrette; the chopped salad, packed with salumi, cucumbers and butter beans in a red wine dressing; and the heirloom caprese, a flavorful classic with buffalo mozzarella and basil pesto. Choices for mains run the gamut from surf to turf. Pasta options include gnocchi made with fennel sausage, arugula and saffron; rigatoni alla grappa with Calabrian chili; bucatini alla matriciana with Fresno chili and guanciale (pictured); and heritage squash agnolotti with trumpet mushrooms, walnuts, sage and brown butter. If you’re in a meat type of mood, try the Brezza Burger, topped with fontina cheese, caramelized onions, tomato, guanciale, house pickles and aged balsamic; Creekstone skirt steak, with radicchio, smoked mozzarella and aceto; and ricotta meatballs, a combination of beef, pork and veal. And if pizza cries out to you, choose from margherita, sausage and peppers and pepperoni. Dessert options abound here, like a pumpkin panna cotta made with bourbon maple caramel and spiced pepitas; cannolis with ricotta mascarpone filling, cinnamon and shaved chocolate; and a lemon olio verde tart, made with lemon curd, nepitella and olive oil meringue. –Ken Miller Resorts World Las Vegas. 702.676.6014

Drink to Their Legacy This unique bar on the Las Vegas Strip celebrates Women’s History Month with inventive cocktails If you’ve never experienced The Cabinet of Curiosities at Horseshoe Las Vegas, then you are in for a treat. The bar is dark and moody, surrounded by walls of cabinets containing the strangest objects. At various places around the bar, you’ll see QR codes that you can scan to learn about each object. And while you’re checking out the interesting items, make sure you have a drink in your hand from the talented mixologists. To celebrate Women’s History Month in March, in addition to the inventive signature cocktails that are always available, you’ll find the Women of the Prohibition Era menu. This menu presents a whole slate of drinks, each priced at $18, named after and honoring famous women and characters who shone in the Prohibition era, from performers to police officers. You’ll find gin, vodka and Bénédictine liqueur as the main spirits in the menu. Fans of The Great Gatsby may want to sample The Daisy Buchanan, the love interest of Jay Gatsby. It contains Empress 1908 Original Indigo gin, elderflower liqueur, crème de violette, lychee purée and lemon juice. Honoring the fashion designer and businessperson, The Coco Chanel features

elderflower rose gin, lychee and passion fruit purées and sparkling water. The Gladys Ingle spotlights the female pilot and aerial stunt artist, with elderflower gin, Bénédictine liqueur, cherry liqueur, pineapple juice, lime juice, bitters and sparkling water. Vodka fans may want to try The Anna Pavlova to recall the passion of the principal ballerina of the Imperial Russian Ballet. It is mixed with botanical vodka, champagne, passion fruit liqueur, sweetened syrup and lemon juice. Other vodka-based drinks include The Lilian Wyles, with vanilla vodka and chocolate and espresso liqueurs, honoring the law enforcement pioneer, and The Evelyn Dove, with potato vodka, champagne, sweetened syrup and lime juice. (Dove was the first black female singer on European radio.) If you like the spices in Bénédictine liqueur, you may want to try The Josephine Baker, where the liqueur is mixed with crème de cacao, fresh cream and ground nutmeg. Baker, the first black female movie star, was a French-American entertainer known for breaking boundaries. –Nina King

The One, The Only
Superstar entertainer wraps up her successful ‘Up All Night’ residency this week Few entertainers have dominated as many entertainment industries as Jennifer Lopez. Her primary achievements will change depending on whom you ask. She’s a dancer. She’s a television star. She’s a movie star. She’s a singer. The list just goes on and on. But this week, the answer to that question is “Vegas headliner,” and you’ll want to get your tickets now: This week marks the last of her incredibly successful run of shows at The Colosseum. Lopez, is, of course, no stranger to Las Vegas. She played 120 shows at Planet Hollywood in All I Have from 2016-’18. Her latest production, Up All Night, is more or less a continuation of the energy she brought to her previous show, with the superstar bringing her entire catalog of hits to an over-thetop production complete with a live band, dazzling fashions and choreography courtesy of NappyTabs. Over the course of two hours, Lopez takes her fans on a musical journey, from the glamour of “If You Had My Love” and “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” to the rave energy of “Waiting for Tonight” and “On the Floor.” Where Lopez gets the energy to do all this while running a business empire is anyone’s guess. Straight to the Top A good time awaits at this new off-Strip hot spot We’ve got your next spot to hang: the newly opened The Deck Rooftop Bar. This intimate venue has all the bougie amenities but with chill, fun vibes and great pricing on food and cocktails. “(It’s) rooted in the basis of Ellis, which is it’s a great time at an affordable price where you don’t have to break the bank,” says Christopher Goss, director of food and beverage for Ellis Island Hotel & Casino. The views are worth the visit alone—you can see from Mandalay Bay to Resorts World Las Vegas, and when the sun sets, the visuals are stunning. There’s also tons of open seating, sofas, tables and chairs, as well as bar seating, all options great for a romantic date night or a fun night out with a big group of friends. There are even a few cabanas (for rent) if you really want to up the ante—large, private spaces with open-air walls and ceiling, awesome views, TV, a dedicated server and lots of comfy seating. Added to The Deck Rooftop Bar experience is a delicious lineup of specialty cocktails, handcrafted recipes with more than a dozen options. Enjoy tequila-based choices like the Dirty Snake Eyes margarita and the Strawberry Rose Ranch Water, vodka-based delights like All On Red,

and bourbon-based favorites like Dr. Feelgood, Full Deck and Mr. Powell. All recipes are mixed with fresh juices, syrups, high-end liqueurs and aromatic bitters. Along with sips are the savory bites. The sandwiches here cannot be passed up. The focaccia used is made in-house daily and is absolutely delish. Two of our faves include the Italian American Club with slow-roasted turkey, Vermont cheddar, apple-smoked bacon and avocado aioli and the Caprese Fresca with mozzarella, heirloom tomato, basil, arugula, pesto aioli and balsamic glaze. You can also dig into charcuterie boards, Italian-inspired tapas and snacks like truffle popcorn and cured beef jerky. “If you want to feel like a local, come to Ellis Island,” Goss says. “When you walk in our door, you’re already a winner. You’ve already won with the prices of our food and beverage. We throw a party every single day. We have DJs on the weekends. It’s never rinse and repeat. Super welterweight bout promises plenty of action In what is no doubt going to be one of the most-anticipated bouts of the season, Keith Thurman attempts to take the WBC Super Welterweight World Championship belt from reigning champion Sebastian Fundora, and the vast experience on both sides guarantees everything will be left on the canvas when all is said and done. Looking at the fighters side-byside, one would think this a mismatch—Fundora (28) is younger than Thurman (37), he has almost a foot on him height-wise (6 foot 6 inches tall

versus 5 foot 7 inches tall), and his reach is a full 11 inches longer (79.9 inches versus 68.9 inches). But none of this takes into account the passion and hunger Thurman brings to the match—or his power. With a 31-1-0 record, Thurman has 23 knockouts; Fundora, meanwhile, sports a 23-1-1 record with 15 KOs. At the press conference announcing the fight, Thurman showed his disregard for Fundora’s intimidating size, yelling “Timberrrrrr!” as if he were felling a tree (he had accompa-
nying T-shirts printed out.) He added in an interview, “… don’t matter if (Fundora) is 6 foot 6, 6 foot 7 … he can’t stop me. Fundora doesn’t know what’s about to hit him.” Fundora’s response says it best: “How I speak is inside the ring with my hands … I’ll show you in the ring why I’m champion.” Are you ready? –Ken Miller

LA GRANITA Caramella at Planet Hollywood 702.785.5551 Although it’s only March, Las Vegas is starting to see some more-than-decent thermometer readings. If you’re like me, you’re always looking for a little relief from warm temps, and for me, this is the go-to drink for that. This tasty cocktail has been crafted from Maestro Dobel Diamante tequila, orangecello, grapefruit, lemon and prosecco. The tequila itself is a blend of three varieties—extra-añejo, añejo and reposado—which goes through a filtering process after aging to create a crystal-clear spirit, hence the name. It has notes of honey, maple and caramel (seems fitting considering the name of the restaurant, eh?), and even a little vanilla, which create a background depth for the bright, citrus ingredients, and the bubbles of the prosecco tickle your tongue. –Nina King

Always likely will be. There’s just something so timeless about something that is made with just a few basic ingredients. And one of the newest versions on the Strip has quickly become a new obsession of mine. This truly signature product at master chef Michael Mina’s newest Strip restaurant adds an apple accent, with apple brandy mixed in with Russell’s Reserve 10-year bourbon (with coconut!), mulled Demerara and toasted pecan bitters. The addition of a dried apple slice adds a wonderful, colorful accent to what is already one of my favorite Old-Fashioned versions ever. –Ken Miller

When Wilson Barrera, bartender at Barry’s Downtown Prime at Circa Resort & Casino, was creating this new cocktail, he wanted to add a rim, but something different than just another sugar-dipped rim (as delicious as those are). So he added a brush of raspberry compote, and—man oh man!—does that little unique touch send this slightly sweet and well-balanced cocktail over the top. I couldn’t put it down between sips. The blend of Grey Goose Strawberry essence vodka, lychee syrup, Aperol, lime juice and egg whites is sent into another level with that simple touch of sweetness. And forgive me for breaking the rules (I know we’re picking one cocktail), but I can’t help mentioning that Barrera promises he’ll also make you the best espresso martini of your life, so now you have two reasons to visit! –Kiko Miyasato

General manager of Grand Prix Plaza revs up his career Benjamin Larvie’s résumé is beyond impressive. The Nashville native has immersed himself in the theatrical world for decades, from stage acting and working with Broadway producer powerhouse Eva Price to working on the management side of Cirque du Soleil’s productions in Europe and managing Netflix’s Stranger Things immersive experience tours. Last spring he joined Grand Prix Plaza as the general manger. “For me, Stranger Things is where I got my first love of immersive experience

and attractions,” he says. “The art was a whole new form, whereas before it was all stage production. … It’s just a different human collective experience—the attractions world can just do something that stage productions could not do.” Larvie and his team have built a playground with Grand Prix Plaza, the world’s largest Formula 1 fan experience. “This is the actual building that houses F1 when it’s in town but throughout the rest of the year guests can come explore the space, see the tracks, eat and drink

When something lasts a long time in Las Vegas, there’s good reason. In a city full of entertainment and dining options, becoming an institution means providing guests from all walks of life an exemplary experience that leaves them with a sense of satisfaction. Gospel Brunch at House of Blues inside Mandalay Bay is one such institution. Since its inception more than two decades ago, the all-you-can-eat buffet and live entertainment experience has been uplifting local artists and filling bellies with delicious food.

Though the word “gospel” refers to the teachings of Christ and the content of the show comes from the Christian faith, it’s important to know this is not an exclusionary event. Host Patti Pennington and a rotating cast of choir singers, quartet singers, soloists and instrumentalists seek to uplift anyone who joins for the morning gathering. “He’s a universal god. We don’t put Him in this box, which makes Him be presented to everybody, whomever they chose to (worship), whether it’s Allah, whether it’s Catholic, whether it’s

whoever,” says Pennington. “The good thing about our music and His music is it is universal. Everybody can relate to hallelujah, salvation and glory … And then the excitement that we bring in the show—we make you dance and laugh. So, it’s not just straight church.” The truth in Pennington’s words is incredibly apparent the moment guests step foot in the venue, as there’s a welcoming sense of community and curiosity that fills the room almost as much as the irresistible scents of bacon and maple syrup. Then, when talented performers begin to belt spirited serenades from the stage, the impulse to join the revelry is undeniable. “Music is medicine, music is life … So many people, especially nowadays, are going through so much. So their soul is yearning for maybe a song or maybe some words to inspire them, encourage them, or prepare what they want to say,
but they don’t have the exact words,” Pennington says. “That’s why I always say it feeds your soul, because whatever you’re yearning for, if you came there depleted, you’re going to leave so full. It’s full of joy, full of laughter, full of abundance, full of love.” While Pennington and her crew feed souls, the House of Blues kitchen staff is hard at work feeding grateful patrons. Find an irresistible array of creole-inspired bites like jambalaya and chicken and waffles offered alongside breakfast classics like omelets and biscuits and gravy. “I’ve had waffles before, but there’s something about the way they cook the waffles. It’s so amazing, they have a buttery taste,” Pennington says. “And the bacon … I don’t know where or how they cook this bacon, but (it must be) a certain way they cook it because it’s so freaking good.”

flowing onto the acreage set across the freeway from the Las Vegas Strip! We recently checked out some new food and beverage offerings that have us excited about planning our return visit, because you just never know what else might pop up at this ever-evolving land of fun.
“We affectionately call it the Carousel Bar, a 40-foot container next to Looper, our carousel,” said Peter Vitolo, general manager of AREA15 restaurants. “Looper has these crazy characters— shark, giraffe, rhino, lion,
dressed up in creative props, laser hats, neon, steampunk, and we named the cocktails after the creatures on the Looper.” The psychedelic carousel ride is open to all ages, and tickets must be purchased to ride, but the bar is 21+. Guests can also order various sandwiches with culinary twists on classics like the Cuban, BLT and Italian sub, and even a dessert sandwich of bananas, strawberries and Nutella. GLOW TROTTER Deep Eddy vodka, lemonade, blue Curaçao, simple syrup and popping candy. RHINO RAZZLE Redemption bourbon, blackberry syrup, lemon juice and mint leaves. LUCID LION Bacardi Superior rum, passion fruit purée, lime juice and a chili salt rim.

This version is the Not Fried Chicken Ice Cream, made with waffle ice cream, chocolate cookie bone and corn flakes.

The Beast Mobile Food Trailer feeds hungry peeps some tasty Mexican eats including savory bites along with classic Mexican sodas and paleta (fresh fruit ice pops).
WALKING TACO Vitolo was the catalyst for this dish—he asked the food truck to open a bag of Doritos and throw some meat and condiments in there. Guests caught him walking around with the treat and asked him where he got it. The lightbulb went off! He ordered specialty Doritos bags, made especially for eateries that want to make this type of dish, and the Walking Taco was born. “We sold out a whole case of those bags of Doritos the first day we sold the dish,” Vitolo said. The Walking Taco is filled with your choice of marinated and slow-braised-in-house pork, beef or chicken, cilantro, onion, jalapeños and your choice of salsa with different spice levels. ELOTE This traditional Mexican side dish is corn on the cob
that is slightly cooked on the grill to give the kernels a nice char and crisp and is then coated with Mexican creama, lime and cotija cheese. It’s one of the food truck’s most popular dishes … and it’s vegetarian! BIRRIA QUESADILLA Stuffed into a flour tortilla is your choice of pork, chicken or steak (or go vegetarian with no meat), onions, radish, cilantro, salsa and a blend of Mexican cheeses. The outside of the tortilla is then coated in even more cheese and cooked on the grill to give it a nice crunch. It’s served with made-in-house salsa and a birria consommé (made from the drippings off the slow-braising of the meats) perfect for dipping. **While no alcohol is served, the food truck is situated right next door to LIFTOFF that offers a full bar. Purchase a cocktail or beer and bring it back over to the food truck to enjoy with your food!

Last summer, Vitolo and the beverage team worked on the Oddwood Bar menu and reformatted a lot of the recipes, creating cocktails that look like science experiments. “We’re doing the laboratory experiments with the cocktails,” Vitolo said. “This is our high-profile mixology bar and a focal point of AREA15. This is the bar where you’ll find top mixology happening.” The new physical menu even looks like notes you’d find in a laboratory research book, with funny anecdotes and notations of cocktail experimenting gone awry. A lot of cocktails are even served in laboratory-inspired vessels like beakers. Vitolo also points out that when you visit Oddwood Bar (it’s hard to miss this bar, with its huge digital maple tree that lights with colors of the rainbow), look for little leaf stickers that contain a QR code that unlocks a secret cocktail menu.

If you like the concept of the grilled cheese, then the new Grounded Grills food truck is for you. “(It’s) our food truck that is an homage to one of the most comforting foods to hit food and beverage: the grilled cheese,” Vitolo said. “So, we thought, ‘How do we take a grilled cheese and make it be a traffic driver? What do you have to do to a grilled cheese to make it stand out? How do you get adults to eat grilled cheese?’ So you have to get whimsical and fun, very AREA15.” The result is a menu of five of the most indulgent, over-the-top grilled cheese recipes you’ll ever eat, along with some tantalizing sides like boardwalk fries served with classic malt vinegar, tomato basil soup (dip your grilled cheese in there!) and Mexican key lime pie ice box cake.
