In my opinion, Tim Allen is one of the key figures in ’90s entertainment. For starters, he starred in one of that decade’s biggest television hits, Home Improvement (a show that has found a whole new audience, thanks to streaming services). Then he all but dominated the box office, starring in The Santa Clause and voicing the character of Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story. If that had been all he did, it would have been an impressive enough feat, but Allen has continued to create quality entertainment through the decades, all while maintaining a live performance schedule. If you need a reminder of just how funny Allen is in his stand-up, now’s your chance—he’s performing at MGM Grand (“Return of the Toolman,” p. 30). Elsewhere in Vegas entertainment this week, Katy Perry, who finished up an incredibly successful run at Resorts World Las Vegas last year, returns for a one-night-only show at T-Mobile Arena (“Back to Roar Some More,” p. 16). Carlos Santana returns to his long-running residency at The House of Blues at Mandalay Bay (“Sentient Being,” p. 34). And superstar DJ Illenium returns to his Resorts World Las Vegas engagement (“Hey, DJ!” p. 21). Food fans have plenty of quality choices to keep them busy, from the Italian excellence of Caramella at Planet Hollywood (“Delicious Views,” p. 20) to the Latin American brunch flavors at Chica at The Venetian (“Arriba Arepas!” p. 28). And a seriously cool pop-up called pastaRamen at Resorts World Las Vegas is sure to delight with its fusion of Japanese and Italian dishes, courtesy of chef Robbie Felice (“Mashup Master,” p. 32). The voice of a generation brings ‘Gems’ to his legion of fans with series of Vegas shows It really is one of the more memorable television moments of the last 25 years. Ally McBeal, a legal drama that aired on Fox, was already very well-known as a show that incorporated music into its fabric, even giving bit roles to superstars like Barry Manilow, Al Green, Elton John, Sting and Mariah Carey. But it was an unknown singer (at the time) that had the biggest impact on viewers. An unassuming-looking Josh Groban appeared on the 2001 season finale as Malcolm Wyatt, and the second he opened his mouth to sing “You’re Still You,” the show’s legacy—and Groban’s fate—changed forever. Fast-forward to now, and that singular voice has resulted in four multiplatinum albums and more than 25 million records sold worldwide. Not bad for a performer who originally wanted to be an actor. As massive an impact as Groban’s Ally McBeal appearance would have, that wouldn’t have happened were it not for a song called “The Prayer.” Written for the movie Quest for Camelot by David Foster, Carole Bayer Sager, Tony Renis and Alberto Testa, the song was to have been rehearsed by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli for the 1999 Grammy Awards, but because of how it was structured, Bocelli was unable to rehearse with Dion. Foster, who knew Groban through a mutual friend, asked him to stand in for Bocelli during rehearsals. Rosie O’Donnell, who hosted the Grammys that year, was so impressed by what she heard that she invited him on her talk show, which later led to the Ally McBeal career-altering appearance. Groban has since collaborated with some of the biggest names in the business, from Sarah Brightman, Lara Fabian and Barbra Streisand to Charlotte Church, Imogen Heap and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. He’s performed on Broadway, including in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Along the way, he’s released best-selling albums, from his self-titled debut in 2001 and Closer in 2003 to Awake in 2007 and Illuminations in 2010. Just Talkin’ About Rockin’
New music makes this new residency special Sammy Hagar may not have the will to drive at any speed less than 56 miles per hour, but he does prefer to be interviewed while in transit. It’s a good use of the Red Rocker’s car time as he prepared for the first set of dates as a Dolby Live resident performer with Sammy Hagar: The Best of All Worlds Stays in Vegas The Residency. It’s an extended headlining engagement, as well as part of his latest tour featuring his Chickenfoot bandmates. “I’m in Orange County heading for Downtown L.A. to a rehearsal hall, where we’re shooting a video with Mike Anthony, Kenny Aronoff, Joe Satriani and myself for a new song I wrote with Joe,” said Hagar during the mid-afternoon, mid-March drive. “This song is so special that we’re gonna do it, and the world has to see it. The world has to hear it for it to make sense. It’s important. That’s all I have to say.” The new song will be added to a set that will run the gamut of Hagar’s career. The Red Rocker’s most recent concerts kicked off with his ’70s origins in Montrose (“Bad Motor Scooter”) and cruised through his solo years (“There’s Only One Way to Rock,” “I Can’t Drive 55”), Van Halen era (“Why Can’t This Be Love,” “Poundcake”) and a cover or two. The band has Chickenfoot’s catalog to draw on and Hagar is game enough to sing lead on early Van Halen (“Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love”), but the new song was a direct tribute to that band’s late guitarist. “It’s about Eddie,” said Hagar. “I had a dream … Eddie goes ‘Hey, c’mere c’mere c’mere! I want to show you! I want to show you this thing!’ And he starts playing this riff and I started singing, and I woke up from the (expletive) dream and I remembered everything. I jumped out of my bed and, 4 in the morning, grabbed my notepad, started writing the lyrics.” –Matt Kelemen

Back to Roar Some More Superstar singer brings her catalog of hits to the Strip
In what was one of the Strip’s most memorable and successful runs, Katy Perry created a whole other world at her Play residency at Resorts World Las Vegas, pulling out all the stops with larger-than-life props, outrageous costumes and animated sequences interspersed throughout. Her fans simply couldn’t get enough, and although her one-day stop in Las Vegas is barely enough to keep her fans satisfied, expect the joint to be packed to the rafters as Perry takes fans through a catalog that is certain to create as much excitement as Play did. Perry is certainly the center of attention at the moment, taking great pride in her recent Blue Origin space flight with Gayle King, Lauren Sanchez, Aisha Bow, Amanda Nguyen and Kerianne Flynn, saying she had “wanted to go to space for almost 20 years.” And fans can certainly expect her to address the recent backlash she’s faced for participating in the space launch. “Has anyone ever called your dreams crazy?” she asked a recent audience. Perry would certainly seem to have few dreams to satisfy at this point, becoming one of the world’s wealthiest musicians, becoming one of the best-selling artists in history, selling out arenas wherever she goes, and being dubbed one of the 21st century’s greatest pop stars by Billboard. Grilled Greatness
Have all your favorites at this high-end hot spot The property now known as Westgate Las Vegas has some of the biggest bragging rights of any property in town. When it was the International, it hosted the legendary Elvis Presley residency; Liberace’s longest-running Las Vegas residency was at the property when it was the Las Vegas Hilton; and Westgate Las Vegas now hosts Barry Manilow’s residency, which recently broke Elvis’ record for most performances. But the bragging rights don’t stop there for the property. It’s also home to one of the best dining experiences you’ll find in Southern Nevada: Edge Steakhouse. Start with appetizers like the beef tartare, so flavorful thanks to the combination of smoked bone marrow, cornichons, pickled shallots, shaved Parmesan, pickled beech mushrooms, truffles and a cured hen egg, all served with crispy grilled bread for spreading. The jumbo lump crab cake is deeply satisfying with avocado aioli, lemon crème fraîche and cucumber, while yellowtail crudo is light and tangy with avocado, radish, cucumber and lime, all in a jalapeno lime vinaigrette. Yes, you could opt for a classic like the 7-ounce filet mignon (medium-rare for us!), which you can get king crab Oscar-style for a serious flavor boost. But there’s also seafood vying for your attention here, from Ora King salmon, served with delicata squash, Romanesco, shishito peppers, cauliflower risotto and chervil beurre monté, to Alaskan king crab legs with a lemon beurre monté for dipping. And we’d be remiss if we didn’t include Mary’s Organic Chicken, a citrus-brined poultry lover’s dream served with cippolini onions, royal trumpet mushrooms, baby Brussels sprouts and garlic potato purée. World-renowned DJ and producer Illenium continues his residency at Zouk Nightclub on May 15, 24 and 27. He’s also on tap to play Electric Daisy Carnival May 16-18. Between gigs, he took some time out to answer questions from Las Vegas Magazine’s associate editor Kiko Miyasato. You’re preparing to play EDC Korea and then EDC Vegas. What are the major differences between playing each festival? The biggest difference in my opinion comes down to the energy and musical taste of the crowd. A track that totally goes off in the States might hit differently in Korea and the inverse of that is true, too. Each place has its own vibe, its own heartbeat, and that’s what makes it special. One thing that’s consistent between EDC Korea and Vegas is how incredible the production is at both festivals. Tell us about your new Zouk residency. The Zouk residency has been such a wild and incredible experience for me. It’s a perfect blend of intimacy and high-energy chaos, and I love feeding off that. Fans can expect a set that’s super dynamic and a mix of my own music as well as the Vegas “classics.” I try to take the crowd on a journey every night so it’s always different depending on the vibe in the room. Tell your fans three things they might not know about you. I went to college for lacrosse initially. I sleep with a Breathe Right strip every night. My favorite snack is Ichiran ramen from Japan.

Where to celebrate in Vegas on this World Whiskey Day For you whiskey/bourbon newbies, all bourbons are whiskies, but not all whiskies are bourbons. Whiskey can be made all over the world, but American whiskey is known as bourbon and must be exclusively made in the U.S. Regardless of the guidelines, it’s been apparent for decades that the whole world loves whiskey—so much so that there’s a day dedicated to the brown spirit, World Whiskey Day, on May 17. In honor of the occasion, we suggest some of the best

spots on the Las Vegas Strip to imbibe whiskies from around the world. Instead of booking a reservation in the restaurant, sidle up to the bar of Nobu Las Vegas at Caesars Palace and check out its impressive Japanese whiskey collection, one of the largest in the city. Choose from a collection of more than 100 different labels including bottles no longer available for purchase or some of the most rare and coveted bottles, including the Karuizawa 1984
Map Series or Karuizawa 1999 Noh 13 Year Old Mask Series, both pouring for more than $1,000 per ounce. More reasonably priced whiskies in Nobu’s collection include popular brands like Hibiki, Yamazaki and Hakushu. And for a special way to celebrate, order the whiskey cappuccino, created with all made-in-house ingredients. and you can peruse one of the largest collections of Irish whiskies outside of the Emerald Isle when you pay a visit to Rí Rá Irish Pub at The Shoppes at Mandalay Place. The décor includes actual pieces brought over from Ireland, including the Shop Bar near the entrance. The Shop Bar was dismantled
of the only spots outside of Scotland that offers the entire collection of the coveted House of Hazelwood. For $2,500, guests can try a flight of the entire whiskey collection that includes eight different expressions. If that’s a little too spicy for your wallet, each expression can also be ordered on its own, starting at $325 and going up to $1,200 per pour. Eight Lounge has also amassed a huge collection of bourbons from around the country and created a bevy of specialty cocktails that use the brown spirit, including its house Old-Fashioned, where the guest chooses the whiskey. Next up is Ireland, where whiskey seems to be celebrated every day,

and re-created inside Rí Rá with all the original pieces and woodwork from Foley’s Bar in Timoleague, West Cork. As you take in the authentic atmosphere, choose from 400 bottles of Irish, American and Scottish whiskies, with one of the biggest Irish whiskey collections in the country (around 140 labels including names like Gelston’s, Old Bushmills, Pearse Lyons and Tipperary). The collection of whiskies at Delmonico Steakhouse at The Venetian is so large one might feel intimated on how to start. Don’t fret—Delmonico’s bartenders are schooled in the spirit and can take each guest on a whiskey journey, bringing you to a destination you’ll thoroughly enjoy. The restaurant’s collection truly is massive, with more than 800 labels from 15 different countries. Popular and standout brands include the Pappy Van Winkle brand with Pappy 15 Year bourbon, Pappy 12 Year bourbon and Pappy Family Reserve 13 Year rye, and the barrel-aged 1792 full-proof bourbon, and Delmonico’s restaurateur Emeril Lagasse’s own barrel-aged Emeril’s Westward whiskey. –Kiko Miyasato

We sat down with Yelena Anter, beverage development manager at Westgate Las Vegas, inside Velvet Bar at the resort and asked her how she ended up creating cocktail programs for the entire property. “I am a huge Elvis fan,” she said. “The whole reason I am in Vegas, the United States, even Westgate, is because of Elvis.” Growing up in Russia in the ’80s, it was forbidden to have anything American, but her dad managed to get a bootleg record of Elvis’ music. “I listened

And in the ’90s as American movies became available, I watched Viva Las Vegas and I had a dream that I wanted to come to Las Vegas, no matter what.” So, she did, at just 19 years old. When she turned 21, she landed her first bartending job and continued to nurture her newfound love for creating cocktails. Anter set her sights on working at Westgate Las Vegas (the unofficial home
of Elvis) and has been with the property since 2023. “My job is to create a truly unique cocktail culture that’s unique to Westgate,” she said. “I make all the garnishes here in the kitchen. I make unique rims, syrups, cordials, too. It’s very rewarding and I love to challenge myself. “If I saw a glimpse of where I am at now 25 years ago, I would probably not believe my eyes. pomegranate seeds and rich avocado lime crema. For something savory and satisfying, consider the seafood arroz negro, comprised of grilled shrimp, squid ink sofrito rice, Oaxaca pasilla crema, pickled onion, avocado and lime. Or try the Paisa breakfast bowl, a delicious combination of rice, black beans, chorizo, prime skirt steak, fried plantains, avocado and chimichurri, all topped with a sunny-side up fried egg. The only appropriate way to end a meal like this is a cup of coffee and a little sweet treat from the bakery. The buñuelo donuts may as well be required eating, as these fluffy lemon ricotta pastries are simply irresistible and pair perfectly with dulce de leche and raspberry sauce. Also, consider the dulce de leche French toast. Made with challah bread that’s almost creamy and topped with fresh berries, dulce de leche and whipped cream, this is a musttry finisher.

After starting in stand-up, Tim Allen’s career has been a series of correct steps Tim Allen is the Tom Brady of sitcoms. Allen has said so himself during appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Good Morning America, metaphorically condensing an explanation of his prime-time trifecta of television series successes. Considering Disney+ has renewed The Santa Clauses for a third season and he’s set to voice Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 5, a sojourn to stand-up stages may provide a well-earned break from a hectic schedule. Las Vegas is one of a handful of North American cities that Allen’s short spring comedy tour will hit during what is tantamount to his golden anniversary as a stand-up comedian. It was 50 years ago that Allen was first convinced to see if he was as funny in front of an audience as he was with friends. True success would come in the
’90s when Home Improvement became Allen’s first ABC hit, adapting his stand-up set for television audiences. The show was a ratings winner for eight seasons. Allen’s tool-toting family man resonated with an underserved demographic, but his voiceover work alongside Tom Hanks in 1995’s Toy Story launched him into the upper echelon of celebrity. The movie was enough of a phenomenon to beget four sequels and an animated television series. After a decade away from prime time, Allen returned to ABC with Last Man Standing, essentially reincarnating Home Improvement’s Tim Taylor as outdoorsman Mike Baxter. That show had a nine-season run, and 1999 sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest, starring Allen as colead, grew in stature as a cult hit.
It’s his latest sitcom, Shifting Gears, that makes him comparable to Brady. He’s a widower with a wayward daughter played by Kat Dennings who re-enters his life in the pilot episode by driving a classic car she stole from him years earlier into the garage of his auto-restoration business with her two sons as passengers. The show reflects both Allen’s enthusiasm for automobiles and the generation gap that he stands firmly on one side of. Allen may be a gearhead who genuinely likes tools, but he loves finding cars at auctions to add to his collections. He’s conservative, but has never been an extremist ideologue with condescension for people with contrasting beliefs. He’s also one of the few entertainers who’s had three network sitcoms, placing him on a pantheon occupied by Lucille Ball and Mary Tyler Moore. Neither of those legends started in stand-up, though, so Allen is in a league of his own. His

returns to film and television can’t really be called comebacks, but his scheduled return to the Laugh Factory in late April might give him a few butterflies in his stomach. He’ll be all warmed up by the time he hits Vegas, with Shifting Gears renewed for a second season and the certainty of Buzz Lightyear’s re-entry established. All is well in Tim Allen’s world, which, like that of his Shifting Gears character Matt Parker, really exists in a North Hollywood shop where the right conditions are in place for lovingly restored hot rods to get better with age.

Robbie Felice’s pastaRAMEN combines Italian and Japanese cuisine Food may be fuel, but dining out should be an experience. At least that’s how chef Robbie Felice sees it, which is why he developed pastaRAMEN, a pop-up Japanese-Italian fusion dining concept that comes to Bar Zazu inside Resorts World Las Vegas for a month starting May 15. The concept originated as an invite-only omakase experience that would spring up in nonconventional venues like hair salons and other hole-in-the-wall spaces, which intentionally created a bit of uncertainty, exclusivity and adventure before diners even sat down.
Paired with pastaRAMEN’s delicious dishes, HEAVENSAKE honors the pop-up’s spirit of fusion by featuring blends that have been composed by French cellar master Regis Camus in collaboration with well-respected Japanese sake breweries. You’ll try the brand’s Orange Label that Camus created with Urakasumi brewery, the Label Azur, a junmai ginjo, and other delights.

“We’re building up that feeling inside you before you even meet me, before you even hear about the food, before anything, you already have this feeling in you that we were able to create,” says Felice. “That’s really what I wanted to do. So then taking a step further as I didn’t want you to be showing up at a restaurant … I wanted people to be like ‘Yo, why is it saying I’m going to a hair salon?’ Why? Because I’m actually feeding you at a second-story hair salon in Soho in New York City.” Felice categorizes his food as “Wafu-Italian,” which is not necessarily a new concept, as the fusion cuisine was popularized by chefs in Japan who sought to create classic Italian dishes with traditional Japanese ingredients and techniques. Felice, though, is largely responsible for popularizing these blended bites in the States. “When I was in culinary school,

tells stories with resonant vibrations on his new album and in concert Carlos Santana’s thirst for musical transcendence is so great he risks dehydration. He channels that passion to the masses through his instantly recognizable guitar playing, most recently collected in retrospective recording Sentient. The album is no repackaged greatest hits, though. It’s a mix of tracks showcasing Santana’s expressive six-string prowess through the years through collaborations, live tracks and a very special cover. Santana compares his latest album, released March 28, to holiday season decor. “The ornaments are gratitude, compassion, consideration, mercy, grace,” he says in a mini-documentary about the album on his YouTube channel. “All those things are ornaments and the Christmas tree is Sentient.” In more direct spiritual terms, he describes Sentient as energy of sound that brings people together with “resonant vibrations that bring humanity together to celebrate what? Our own divinity, our own light.” It’s hardly the first time

Santana leaned into metaphysics to describe his music and inspirations, but he’s probably never laid it out more succinctly. His 2024 single “Let the Guitar Play” leads off the album, with the guitarist’s tasty, slightly overdriven licks engaging Darryl “DMC” McDaniels in call and response before segueing into a soaring lead. The track is followed by a previously unreleased 2007 live cover of Michael Jackson’s “Stranger in Moscow” with producer/ drummer Narada Michael Walden and his band. It’s lyrical, chill-inducing and emblematic of the heights Santana reaches with his passionate playing. He’s only performed “Stranger in Moscow” once live, so although the probability of Santana playing it at his next round of House of Blues residency shows is slim, it is entirely possible he could give audiences a taste. A 2001 Latin-flavored collaboration with Jackson, “Whatever Happens,”

follows “Stranger in Moscow” and would be difficult to pull off without the King of Pop’s presence. Santana guested as a session player on “Please Don’t Take Your Love” from Smokey Robinson’s 2009 album Time Flies When You’re Having Fun, but performed on an alternate take that resurfaces on Sentient.
