Uptown in Time for New Year’s Eve Superstar is Stratocasting a long shadow in Vegas Bruno Mars and New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas go together like Stratocaster guitars and strings, like jazz and clubs, like pinky fingers and rings. He’s performed on the Strip nearly every final evening of the year since 2013, settling in at Dolby Live at The Park MGM for his resident headquarters and go-to place to celebrate days of auld lang syne. Last year, Mars took advantage of Dolby Live’s proximity to Bellagio to perform at an after-party inside the Mayfair Supper Club. Odds are he’ll be at Bellagio again if work is completed on The Pinky Ring, the cocktail lounge and jazz bar that he’ll introduce to the public in early 2024. It will be a party penthouse for Mars when he’s in town, reflecting his glam image and adding electricity to the casino floor scene the venue is located within. Although Mars stayed busy touring throughout 2023, it’s only been recently that he’s started to make news due to his return to Dolby Live, his new club and a Limited Edition Bruno Mars Stratocaster going on the market in November. Stratocasters have long been the musician’s weapon of choice, and he joins Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck and

Nile Rogers as luminaries with an Artist Signature Series designed in their honor by the Fender Musical Instrument Company. If Mars brandishes a Strat with a finish that could be described as Mars Mocha Heirloom, a mint-green pickguard and gold hardware, it’s the signature guitar. He may just have used it to jam on while conjuring song ideas for his next studio album, which will arrive in 2024 if Mars wants to satiate his fan base’s appetite for new music. It’s been more than two years since he released Silk Sonic’s debut with Anderson .Paak, and Unorthodox Jukebox came out in 2016. Mars creates music when the muse hits him and doesn’t seem to publicly express consternation about maintaining a constant presence on the charts. Of all the winter wonderlands in North America, none compares to the Grand Canyon. Familiar expanses of scenery are draped in pristine white after a snowfall. Rim edges spill over with Jack Frost’s finest frozen topping. Whether planning to hike, take a helicopter tour or take in breathtaking views from a transparent cantilevered bridge stretching over the deep gorge, the Hualapai Tribe’s Grand Canyon West can grant any wintertime sightseeing wish. The Colorado River is temperate for high-speed water travel again in March,

but pontoon boats are available in packages with helicopter tours year-round. Soar high over the geography then drop 3,500 feet below the West Rim to float smoothly on the river’s surface without getting splashed. Hikers that prefer dry land and little pedestrian traffic will find the winter months ideal. High temperatures average 45 degrees Fahrenheit (6 degrees Celsius), making midday hikes brisk. Spend a few hours seeing things from the perspective of a frontier explorer discovering unspoiled wilderness as the
sun overcomes morning chill. Any time of day is good for walking on the Skybridge, though. The 10-footwide glass bridge extends 70 feet over the Grand Canyon’s west rim, creating the feeling of walking on air. Generation of Surprises The magic men have kept fans on their toes for 30 years
As fans of ongoing Las Vegas shows will attest, many of those shows are unchanging; they find a formula that works after months (or even years) of honing, and if it ain’t broke, they don’t fix it. But not Penn & Teller! These magic men are all about breaking stuff (sometimes literally) and still finding a way to fix it each and every night. Longtime fans of this duo will also attest: Penn & Teller are always reinventing their show, even 30 years later. No, that is not a typo—these gentleman have become an institution in Las Vegas over the last three decades, becoming almost as synonymous with the city as the skyline itself (and they are featured prominently on one of the buildings in said skyline). And a big part of that success is their restlessness, a wanderlust to perform each and every illusion they learn about (or create). Even if I were to tell you about some of their newest bits (the egg bag; a drill, saw, block of wood and a very nervous audience volunteer; a bit almost completely in Spanish; needle in a haystack), there could be no guarantee you would see any of them in the show you’re about to buy tickets for. So my best advice would be … it’s Penn & Teller! What are you waiting for? –Ken Miller

It’s Padiernos’ job to create the cocktail programs at Tao Group’s many
venues around town, as well as revamp existing menus. And for the new year, this boss lady looks forward to applying everything she’s learned in her latest role and making 2024 even more successful. “I’ve been with Tao Group for so long, it’s a testament to them,” she says. “They’ve always championed my development. LAS VEGAS IS RAPIDLY EVOLVING, and it can be a bit overwhelming to consider just how much this town has changed from its early days. But if you want to get away from the bustle and just unwind, there’s a place just for you: Edge Steakhouse, where the values and service of old Vegas live on. From the second you enter, you realize just how special this restaurant is. It’s instantly calming, with dark woods and elegant furnishings. A bar to your right beckons you to have a drink and some conversation before heading to your table. You’ll want to start with one of Edge’s signature cocktails like the Vegas Dream, a combo of Tito’s vodka, passion fruit, prosecco and a huckleberry reduction, all served in a pomegranate sugar-rimmed martini glass. Another solid option is the Eat a Peach, where the bourbon is blended with lemon, peach-and-amaretto jam,
agave and egg white. You really can’t go wrong here. Take your cocktail to your table, where you’ll be greeted by one of the ultra-friendly and accommodating waitstaff, who will bring you the first of many delights to come: a Gruyère-infused popover. As you devour this amazing piece of baked goodness, peruse the menu for the first of your appetizers. We personally can’t recommend enough the baby beets salad, so full of flavors with cara cara orange, candied walnuts, Meyer lemon vinaigrette and a goat cheese fritter. It’s as fun to look at as it is to eat. Equally magnificent is the wagyu beef tartare, served with Kaluga caviar, truffle aioli, radish and a quail egg, enjoyed with beef fat toast. The steak selections here are all spectacular, but none quite so spectacular as the massive tomahawk, more than enough for at least two people and the reason Insta-
gram was invented. If you’re in the mood for wagyu, try the wagyu strip king crab Oscar-style, smothered in rich, decadent sauce. And don’t skip littleneck sea scallops, served with Neuske’s bacon, fondant potatoes and a clam chowder emulsion, as an accompaniment. Sides here are as classic as the restaurant itself, from grilled asparagus topped with bearnaise sauce and charred lemon to a black and white truffle mac and cheese, made with ditalini pasta and loaded with chives, white cheddar, Gruyère and Parmesan and a demi-glace. Desserts here are the perfect ending to a perfect meal. The warm chocolate lava cake is decadent with vanilla ice cream, a raspberry coulis and fresh berries, while the Tahitian vanilla crème brûlée will have all eyes darting toward your table, as it’s brought fully afire. Wait until the flames subside and enjoy!

Luke Bryan plays the final dates of his Resorts World residency Luke Bryan has barely had a chance to sit still and drink a beer since his last spate of Las Vegas residency shows. That might be one reason his next string of Luke Bryan: Vegas concerts will be his last at Resorts World Theatre. Bryan went from five headlining nights in Vegas to a celebration in Nashville of his 30th No. 1 radio hit, “Country On,” to his 14th annual Farm Tour before finishing the remaining dates of his Country On Tour at the end of October. After playing New Year’s Eve on the Strip, he might need a break. Bryan has released three songs from a forthcoming eighth studio album, including latest single “Southern and Slow,” which followed “Country On” and “But I Got a Beer in My Hand.” He hosted the CMA Awards in November, and heads for Cancún in January to headline the seventh incarnation of his Crash My Playa “concert vacation.” That leaves February open to hunker down with songwriting colleagues and studio musicians to compose and record enough material to round out his next long player. Themes of good times, good friends, rural roads and small-town nostalgia expressed through Bryan’s baritone flow have never seemed to go out of style since his debut single, “All My Friends Say,” reached No. 5 on the country chart in 2007. Attribute that to Bryan playing a significant role in country concerts becoming infused with

rock-arena energy. Garth Brooks may have upped the game for stage production, but Bryan’s contagious charisma and inexhaustible energy drives audiences wild. He’s not afraid to take chances and mix things up, as most recent Luke Bryan: Vegas setlists testify. He drew from latest singles, earliest recordings and biggest hits to open shows and changed song order night to night. In other words, Bryan makes things interesting for his following by making things interesting for himself. The video for “But I Got a Beer in My Hand” seems like one long take as hitchhiker Bryan gets dropped off at a house party and seamlessly goes from leading the band to playing a hand of cards and back. The 2024 lineup for Crash My Playa includes starof-the-moment Jelly Roll along with Jon Pardi, Dierks Bentley and Eddie Montgomery as top featured talent. His own live set at the CMAs was a show highlight, the audience singing along with a leather-clad Bryan to a medley of “Huntin’, Fishin’ and Lovin’ Every Day,” “One Margarita,” “That’s My Kind of Night,” “Play It Again” and “Country Girl (Shake It for Me).” He’s still at the top of his game, with plenty of greens to shoot before he reaches his back nine. Bryan could have given up his dreams to take over the family peanut farm business in Georgia. He instead became a plowman’s poet, a backwoods bard, a trailer-park troubadour. An elevated catwalk at Resorts World Theatre allows him to get eye-toeye with fans in the mezzanine, which serves as both show-stopping stage element and moving metaphor for country’s man of the people.

Chef Keris Kuwana has created Donutique—a boutique shop serving gourmet doughnuts that’ll knock your socks off. Plus, they look so darn cute! Using the classic Bismarck doughnut recipe, which is essentially a yeast-raised doughnut, she creates mini masterpieces: The Choco Honey Donut is topped with black truffle-infused honey, royal icing, honey buttercream, honey brown butter tuile and a hand-painted chocolate bumblebee; the Birthday Cake Donut (you get a free one if it’s your birthday!) is topped with a little mini confetti cake slice made with a cotton candy buttercream, vanilla icing and handmade sprinkles; and the beautiful Chocolate Mousse Donut is filled with made-in-house mousse and topped with raspberry jam, also made in house, and fresh berries and powdered sugar.

Chef Buddy Valastro helped put Hoboken, N.J., on the map when he shared with the world his flair for baking, and he brings those talents to Las Vegas with Carlo’s Bakery. Inside the small shop, inspired by the one in his hometown, you’ll find all his signature goodies. Two classic Italian desserts really shine here: the Lobster Tail, made with a crispy, flaky crust and filled with a French cream made with a little touch of Bailey’s; and the classic Cannolis, all filled with a made-in-house sweet ricotta cheese with a hint of cinnamon and chocolate chips (take your choice of assorted flavors like birthday cake, peanut butter chocolate and classic). “There’s something amazing about being able to turn just a few simple ingredients—flour, butter, sugar, and eggs—into croissants, cookies, ice cream, pastries, cakes of all shapes and flavors,” Ansel said. “The possibilities are endless if you have great ingredients and foundations and a bit of imagination.” That imagination is shown in the Banana Split, a classic dessert transformed into a cake made with banana bread, raspberry jam, chocolate and banana whipped ganache, cherry crémeux and vanilla sable. Another nostalgic treat transformed is the Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich, made with chocolate chip sablés and filled with vanilla bavarois with a flourless chocolate biscuit, salted caramel and cookie dough ganache. Talk about one of the most Instagrammable spaces in all of Las Vegas—Café Lola is a darling, gardenlike café, and its menu is filled with photoworthy yet totally delicious treats. Mainly known for its giant list of unbelievably delicious and unique coffee and drink treats, we found yummy desserts, too, all made fresh daily and in house: the signature Rose Cookie, a sugar cookie topped with a rose made of sweet vanilla frosting; the rich Oreo Donut, a chocolate doughnut topped with crushed chocolate sandwich cookies (perfect for vegans); and the best-selling Basque Cheesecake, a mini cheesecake topped with fresh blueberries and strawberries with raspberry jam on the bottom and a sprinkling of gold flakes.

Instagram loves Hello Kitty Café. There are so many cute things here to post about, from the décor to the merch to the sweet treats. But let’s pause on the sweet treats, because you’ll not only want to upload pictures of them to Insta and TikTok, you’ll also want to munch on the treats created especially for the world’s most famous cat! (Is she really a cat, though?) Go classic with the Hello Kitty Cupcake, a rich red velvet cupcake topped with cream cheese frosting, pink and white chocolate shavings and edible glitter and an edible character made out of fondant. The Keroppi Donut, based on a favorite character of many, is a fluff y pastry filled with a light custardlike pastry cream and topped with a sugar glaze and fondant character. Our favorite is the Taiyaki Waffle Cone, filled with creamy vanilla and strawberry soft serve, which pairs divinely with the mochi-based waffle cone that is chewy and crunchy and lip-smacking delicious.

Every recipe at Zeppola Café is an Italian family recipe. The owners set up shop first in New York City with their bakery and then expanded to Las Vegas. Now Zeppola offers other eats besides sweet baked goods. (Can we stop for a minute and mention that they offer one of the best espresso martinis you will ever have?!) But at 4 a.m. every day, the staff is up in Zeppola Café’s kitchen whipping up those fresh-made desserts, and we’ve picked three of our favorites: the

Kelly Clarkson returns to Planet Hollywood for New Year’s weekend Who doesn’t have a fond memory tied to at least one of Kelly Clarkson’s songs? As a child, my sister and I enjoyed many nights queuing up our karaoke machine. And, of course, my go-to banger to belt was none other than Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone.” Though I had not yet experienced a single breakup, something about the pop rock power ballad just tickled the deepest part of my 6-year-old soul. So, I’m sure you can imagine the sense of jubilation that came with the announcement of the singer’s limited-run engagement at the Bakkt Theater inside Planet Hollywood that began earlier this year. With just four dates left, chemistry…an intimate night with Kelly Clarkson needs to be a high priority in your New Year’s Weekend plans. Just be prepared to lose your voice, because there’s no way you’ll be able to resist singing every last tune. The Kelly Clarkson Show, soaring, the original American Idol winner remains unstoppable. And when the stage lights hit, she doesn’t let up. You’ll have the opportunity to scream every last one of your favorite hits, from “Behind These Hazel Eyes” to “Stronger” and “Because Of You.” The star even works in a little “Kellyoke,” a favorite bit from her talk show where she covers songs by various artists. The songs Clarkson treats her audience to may change night to
night, but during a show earlier this year, she treated fans to a rendition of Harry Styles’ “As It Was.” Making the Vegas shows exceptionally stupendous, the three-time Grammy winner uses her charming personality to engage with her audience in ways that a concert can uniquely afford an artist. Not only does Clarkson roam the venue as she vocalizes, but she also utilizes brief lulls in her setlist to chat with the audience, sharing stories of her children
and quipping with the crowd. The superstar’s sense of humor allows her to connect with fans in a very personable way. When she engages, her sense of humor makes apparent her humble nature and allows fans in even the farthest seats from the stage feel like they’re talking with a friend. It’s obvious that Clarkson has chosen the right venue for herself as well. The Bakkt Theater is the perfect size; large enough to fit many fans, yet small enough to make sure no audience seat is too far from the stage. The sound is crisp, and the stage design is dynamic. Also, make sure you head to the bar to grab a drink. Not only does a refreshing libation make any concert just a touch more fun, but at Bakkt Theater they serve drinks in reusable cups that you get to keep! All in one, you get a memento to remember your night while also participating in a more sustainable practice.
