From the Editor The Numbers Game

Las Vegas is a city that’s all about the numbers: Lucky 7s; 21 (blackjack!); four of a kind; a bingo card; the list just goes on and on. But there’s a world of numbers in Las Vegas that doesn’t get talked about a lot, one that signifies the staying power of the city and the hard work of thousands who want to bring you a world-class experience every time you visit. I’m talking about milestones. I’m talking about serious cause for celebration. And, in the case of this week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine, I’m talking about two very specific, iconic offerings: The Barrett-Jackson collector car auction, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary (it began producing auctions in Las Vegas in 2008) (“50 Years of Beauty,” p. 30); and Spiegelworld’s Absinthe, which this month celebrated its 6,000th performance at Caesars Palace (“6,000 and Counting,” p. 34). Congratulations to two of the city’s top draws! If you scored tickets to either of the above offerings, get ready to have some fun! If not, fear not: There’s plenty more to choose from, and this week’s issue has a bit of everything for every taste. There’s Cirque du Soleil’s latest offering, the New York-themed Mad Apple at New York-New York (“It’s a State of Mind,” p. 10), as well as the long-running tribute show to Sammy,

Frank and Dean, The Rat Pack Is Back, at Tuscany Suites & Casino (“It’s a Gas, Baby!” p. 14) and adults-only revue Rouge at The STRAT. In this week’s issue, editor at large Brock Radke talks to the show’s director and producer, Hanoch Rosènn (“Artistic Connections,” p. 32). And with summer temperatures heating up, we’ve got plenty of outdoor activities to both help you cool off and enjoy some live music at the same time. Over at Mandalay Bay Beach, the Concerts on the Beach series kicks off with Sublime With Rome (“Summer Chill,” p. 13). And one of the Strip’s newest party paradises, Ayu Dayclub at Resorts World Las Vegas, has a DJ lineup coming you won’t soon forget (“The Great Escape,” p. 40). It’s a State of Mind

Cirque show celebrates spirit of New York Even if you have been to other Cirque du Soleil shows, you’ll find that the newest show in its stable is a different kind of animal. Mad Apple merges comedy, acrobatics, singing and dancing with Cirque’s penchant for over-the-top costumes, creating a dynamic, engaging show. As you’re filtering into the theater, you’ll have a chance to grab a drink, but you may want to wait until you’re inside, since the preshow involves an actual bar on the stage and magicians circulating through the crowd. Once the show proper starts, you won’t be able to order a drink up there, but you’d be too distracted to anyway. As is the case with many Cirque shows, and any good nightclub, there’s a lot going on. Some numbers feature the full 48-member cast, and that’s pretty amazing, while others celebrate New York musically—music director Xharlie Black and five vocalists plus five-piece band present incredible mashups of Big Apple-themed songs. There’s plenty of clowning around, but stand-ups Brad Williams and Harrison Greenbaum re-create a comedy club vibe, while comedy rapper Chris Turner takes random phrases from the crowd and turns them into inspired, hilarious verse. The acrobatics will amaze you, from two-man balancing acts that quickly morph in a flipping frenzy, trampoline experts that make amazing roundball shots while sailing through the air. An aerialist puts a spin on the theme as she is suspended by her hair. An enormous wheel flips through the air with an acrobat seemingly barely hanging on sometimes. One of the quieter moments may be the most intriguing, as a host’s intricate shadow puppets become more complex, and almost unbelievable, as the act continues. And that’s just a portion of the eclectic mix; Mad Apple might be even more entertaining than a night in the Big Apple itself. –Nina King

Flock to Fauna It’s a nice respite from the buzz of the Las Vegas Strip, and it’s an attraction that many might not know about, but everyone really should. The Wildlife Habitat can be found on the Flamingo’s 4-acre tropical grounds, and is free for guests to stroll, stop and take a break and take in the beauty of nature and its inhabitants. While Chris Rock may understandably turn down future invitations to the Oscars, he’s undoubtedly going to spend more time on stand-up stages. Both stand-up artists and audiences need an inspirator that can shift societal attention with one joke. They need Chris Rock. Rock came up in the comedy industry of the ’80s, his youth setting him apart from peers influenced by Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy. Rock made a memorable splash as Rib Joint Customer in I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, became known to film audiences as hapless Pookie in 1991’s New Jack City and to television audiences as activist commentator Nat X during his stint on Saturday Night Live. Everything he did in his career prior to 1999 seemed like a warm-up upon the release of his HBO special Bigger & Blacker. Rock was on point, at the peak of his abilities and brutally honest as he addressed themes of race, hypocrisy and social responsibility. It placed him on everybody’s top five list of favorite comedians well beyond the release of his 2014 sleeper-hit film Top Five. –Matt Kelemen

Rise and Shine Lingering over brunch is a fabulous way to get your day started, especially at NoMad Bar. There are plenty of great cocktails to start with, but if you’ve got a few folks at the table, order one of NoMad’s Cocktail Explosions. These behemoths come in an enormous urn and serve up to eight people. The Porn Star, named for its fun presentation, features Elyx vodka, Lustau Fino sherry, passionfruit, vanilla and lime—it’s surprisingly light, yet potent as well.

The NoMad “fruit cocktail” is perfect to start and share with fruit selections of pineapple, cantaloupe, and melon infused with spirits like rum, Chartreuse and St-Germain. Or go savory with oysters, scallops ceviche or smoked salmon. Seems Like Yesterday Sixteen years of coming together While there’s nothing you can do that can’t be done in Las Vegas, re-experiencing The Beatles LOVE should be high priority. Now celebrating its 16th anniversary (having debuted June 30, 2006), a shot of LOVE is just the antidote for anything that ails us. That antidote begins musically when the Beatles’ career was coming to an end. After the audience is beckoned to “Come Together,” Starr’s instantly recognizable pounding from “Get Back” kicks LOVE into overdrive. That final song from the final Beatles studio album paves the way for the dancing, soaring, rolling and strolling cast members to parade onstage. The

Let It Be rooftop concert at Abbey Road Studios inspires the scenario, but the abstract narrative travels back to 1940s Liverpool, where “A Day in the Life” is drawn on to reflect the turbulence of the war-torn time the Fab Four were born into. There are some truly magical moments where technology and performance meet, most sensually during “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” An aerialist interprets “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” above a performer bound to the ground with wheels. Daredevils get high with a little help from Beatles music, trampolines, bungee cords and skate ramps. “Here Comes the Sun” is brought to full, beautiful life. One particu-

larly poignant segment features a trapeze duo performing to McCartney’s “Yesterday.” While the song is not about Sir Paul’s love for trapeze swinging, he’s still going strong. Starr recently branched into issuing NFTs featuring digitized versions of his paintings and drum tracks. Harrison is the latest to win a Grammy (for “Best Boxed or Special Limited-Edition Package”) and Lennon’s “Give Peace a Chance” was performed for the opening of the Eurovision Song Contest. No doubt those triple-digit temperatures are tempting you to stay mostly inside your nice, cool, air-conditioned resort. But you’ll definitely want to head outside for Mandalay Bay Beach’s Concerts on the Beach series. Not only will you get to hear some of music’s hottest acts, you’ll do so at one of the coolest venues on the Las Vegas Strip—a re-created beach environment complete with a shoreline and pool that allows you to soak while sipping on signature cocktails. The fun starts with Sublime with Rome, which performs at 9 p.m. July 2. The group formed in 2009, and its current lineup of Eric Wilson, Carlos Verdugo and Rome Ramirez have been entertaining crowds with their ska punk sound. Expect to hear hits like “Wicked Heart,” “Take It Or Leave It,” “Panic” and “Wherever You Go.” Concerts on the Beach continues with Travis Tritt and special guest Randy Houser on Sept 4, and Caifanes on Sept. 10-11. –Ken MIller

Scream of the Crop There is no shortage of WTF moments in Las Vegas, but the thrill rides atop The STRAT SkyPod might top them all. At nearly 1,000 feet in the sky, a triple threat of death-defying experiences await: X-Scream, Insanity and Big Shot, all with their own unique brand of OMG that will stir you to the core. And if you can’t decide which ride to buckle into first, we can’t help you there, for they’re all equally terrifying. Best advice: Go with your gut, while you still have one. Undoubtedly, you’ll all scream on X-Scream, a roller coaster that resembles a seesaw, which teeters over the edge of the SkyPod and vigorously wobbles back and forth like a rock-a-bye baby gone wrong. As for Insanity, there’s no better name for this carousel (which is controlled by a monstrous mechanical arm) that dangles and spins 64 feet away from the tower. But the ride that really makes the STRAT SkyPod an adrenaline-infused cuckoo’s nest is Big Shot, a pneumatically powered ride that shuttles up and down the tower’s iconic space needle. Although it seems rather pedestrian now compared to the other rides, it’s still incredibly fun. –Las Vegas Magazine Staff

It’s a Gas, Baby! Who doesn’t love the Rat Pack era of Las Vegas? Heaven’s Kitchen

Restaurant welcomes new chef As famous as Gordon Ramsay is for his restaurants, he’s equally famous for the television legacy he’s created over the last few decades. The legendarily foul-mouthed host of such reality-show classics as Kitchen Nightmares, Master Chef and The F Word has created a recognizable brand the world over, demanding only the best from the people and up-and-coming chefs he brings into his orbit. Fans of Ramsay’s most recent series, Hell’s Kitchen: Young Guns will be thrilled when they visit Gordon Ramsay Steak. That season’s winner, Trenton Garvey, is now the head chef at the world-class restaurant, and whether you’re a

fan of the show or just a Ramsay fan in general, you’ll love what Garvey is planning. I was recently invited to a gathering of food writers to meet Garvey and enjoy a small tasting menu. If this sampling is any indication, Gordon Ramsay Steak is in very capable hands. The amuse-bouche was a take on Ramsay’s Scotch egg, here prepared with a quail egg, Berkshire pork sausage, red wine-braised cabbage and truffle aioli. Heaven! The Hudson Valley foie gras is a revelation for fans of the decadent protein. It’s served on caramelized orange brioche for the beginning of an amazing flavor profile, but Garvey then adds

smoked granola, Grand Marnier reduction and tangerine brulèe. This dish easily caused the most discussion at the table. Spoiler alert: the majority thought it was the highlight. Garvey’s diver scallops were a close second, one of the best examples of this mollusk I’ve ever had, accented with brown sugar-glazed carrot purèe, pickled carrots, dill oil and pomegranate. This is a “secret” menu item, available only for those in the know (which now includes you). Other Ramsay classics like the 8-ounce American wagyu rib cap and sticky toffee pudding are as scintillating as ever. Don’t wait—make your reservation here today. –Ken Miller

Making Moves

There is no experience in Las Vegas like Jabbawockeez, from lighting, costume design and sound to kinetic choreography that at times seems superhuman. They currently perform twice nightly in Timeless at MGM Grand Las Vegas, save for dark Tuesdays. It was a long, head-spinning, freestyling way to the top for Jabbawockeez, starting in early ’00s San Diego with original members Kevin “KB” Brewer and Joe Larot gathering like-minded souls who wanted to transcend then-current conventions saturating dance competitions. The road to Vegas began in earnest when America’s Got Talent made them a household name in 2006. Two years later, they reigned supreme on MTV reality series America’s Best Dance Crew. The next step was global domination and, in 2010, they became the Strip’s first hip-hop dance headliners with MÜS.I.C at the Monte Carlo (now Park MGM). In 2013, they created PRiSM for Luxor, then joined MGM Grand’s A-list of Strip resident entertainers with JREAMZ in November 2015. The Jabbawockeez have stated their intention to change the world through dance, and it’s hard to not feel a little transformed after experiencing them live. –Matt Kelemen

As you might guess from the name, Pub 365 has a rotating craft beer list that includes one for each day of the year—that’s right—a mixture of national favorites and local creations. And while you’re trying to make a selection, nosh on chicken tinga tacos, carne asada nachos, poutine with crispy fries and Wisconsin cheese curds, pulled pork and bacon, or a Unicorn Burger, given extra bite with Tabasco pickles. Bartender welcomes you home Joanna Carson has had a front-row seat to performances by some of country music’s biggest names—Jake Owens, Cole Swindell, Parmalee, and her favorite, Luke Combs. And she didn’t even have to purchase a ticket! Nope, she was at work. Carson is a bartender for Gilley’s at Treasure Island—the honky-tonk restaurant, dance hall and saloon. “We have a saying among us, ‘Welcome to Gilley’s. Welcome home,’” Carson says. “It’s very casual. It’s very comfortable. Even if you’re not a fan of country music you’d find it cool. It’s so fun.” Carson bartended in San Francisco before moving to Las Vegas in 2004. After working in local bars, she decided to head to the Strip and joined Treasure Island, where she bartended at outlets across the property. Then in 2013, “There was an opportunity to transfer into Gilley’s and I jumped on it because the music was a big thing—I love country music,” she said.

Before bartending, the San Diego native went to college to get her degree in teaching. “And I started bartending to put myself through school,” Carson explains. “Then I just never stopped—it became a career that I loved.” Two decades later she still loves her job, and she loves where she works. “It’s never boring,” Carson says. “You meet people from all over the world. I’ve really built and maintained relationships with my guests over the years.” And Carson is a great source on the city for her Gilley’s guests. “The bar life is really a big part of my life,” she says. “This is a great town for me because I really love food and beverage. Bobby Flay has long had a Las Vegas presence, one that extends across multiple properties and has included a wide variety of food styles. Longtime fans of his Vegas ventures no doubt miss Mesa Grill, his take on Mexican food at Caesars Palace that has now been replaced by another Flay enterprise, the Italian-themed Amalfi. In the meantime, Flay also laid the groundwork for what is now the Bobby’s Burgers empire on the Strip. His first outpost was at The Shops at Crystals, and it enjoyed much success before Flay made the move to make it a Caesars Entertainment-only enterprise. Barrett-Jackson rolls into Vegas for its annual collector car auction

It’s good to be the King of Auto Auctions. The sobriquet is often applied to Craig Jackson in introductions by reverent podcasters who manage to wave him in for a pit stop as he accelerates toward the next Barrett-Jackson auto auction. The venerable collector car institution observes its 50th anniversary this year and its second show at Las Vegas Convention Center. It’s also during the beginning of the end of the Pure Petroleum Era. Jackson is undaunted as the industry shifts from gas engines to noiseless vehicles, although, like most manual transmission devotees, he laments the imminent passing of the stick shift. He’s had a front seat to motor trends since father Russ teamed with fellow car buff Tom Barrett in 1971 to plan the first Barrett-Jackson auction that would take place that winter. Jackson became head of the company shortly after Hummers became a familiar sight. The president and CEO continues to run the company with zestful energy and enthusiasm as a zero-emission Interstellar White 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 Pickup heads toward the Convention Center. “We actually sold (the first vehicle) for $2 million in Scottsdale; we did a Barrett-Jackson Hummer with Neiman Marcus,” says Jackson. “I love the petroleum cars. I’ve been buying up a lot of the last great ones of those, but the first time I drove the (Hummer) I was like, ‘Yeah!’ Those electric motors get this thing out of the hole when those turbos kick in.” Jackson is a big fan of the electric hybrids, but some Vegas

The hotel-casino is within walking distance of the Convention Center’s West Hall, which is also easily accessible by Las Vegas Monorail. Barrett-Jackson Garage will set up temporarily at Dawg House Saloon & Sportsbook at Resorts World, while live music and shopping at the Exhibitor Marketplace provide distraction from the action on the block. “Barrett-Jackson’s in the entertainment business as much as the car business,” says Jackson, whose organization has raised nearly $150 million for philanthropic and relief organizations. “It’s good family entertainment to come there and look at the cars, and when I see three generations walking in … I’ve had families come up to me and say, ‘This is the only thing we can bond over.’ That’s what it’s all about.”

Director and producer Hanoch Rosènn has made a significant impact on the Las Vegas live entertainment landscape in recent years with the success of two family-friendly, very Vegas productions—WOW at the Rio and Extravaganza at Bally’s. This summer he saw a new project come to fruition, a unique take on a more grown-up show genre, when he opened Rouge at The STRAT. We checked in with this creative force to find out what makes this sexy new stage show stand out.

It’s hard to explain what it’s going to be. I think you have to see it in order to really understand what it is. It is a topless show, but it’s very artistic, and it’s the first time I’ve done something like that. I’ve seen almost every show in Vegas, including the female revues and most of the male revues. I’d also seen Zumanity, a great inspiration for all of us. What it started 17 years ago was really something. There’s really nothing out there now that combines men and women together with this scale, the spectacle of a big show. That’s what this is, a big show in a small theater.

I had this show in mind for a long time, probably a few years, and I knew I wanted to do it because I saw what there was around town and around the world. It’s very modern. The music is up to date and it’s not like the showgirls and topless revues from the past, that was not my inspiration. I would say my inspiration was (the film) Fifty Shades of Grey, and really just the common, everyday couple, portrayed in the opening scene.

It’s not just about having these beautiful dancers and acrobats and performers. This is about the freedom of the body, and feeling good about yourself. And I felt the connection between the performers doesn’t have to be woman to man, it can be man to man or woman to woman or whatever, and we want to show that connection onstage in an artistic way.

You see them in bed, saying, “Oh, I have a headache, I’m tired, maybe tomorrow.” We’re all going through this. And then suddenly, you see these hands coming up in the bed, and soon we are filling the stage with this huge lingerie party.

The theater is very cozy, even though it seats around 650 for our show. The lighting is great. People get to come in and see all these characters all around them and it’s quite a shock, how close it is. This is a good theater for me, with a lot of booths and tables, and it’s perfect for me to match what (The STRAT) wanted for a real late-night show.

Gazillionaire’s green dream Absinthe reaches a landmark number of performances By Matt Kelemen One day, as the Gazillionaire was having his usual breakfast of black coffee, toast and self-admiration, he had a vision: He would pitch a tent right in front of Caesars Palace. It would be home to a new form of entertainment featuring spectacular acts, degenerate humor and lap dancing. Inspired, he drank from a bottle of green spirit provided by his loyal confidante Wanda Widdles and dreamed up the blueprint for what would become Absinthe. As of June 2, Absinthe had been performed 6,000 times inside the spiegeltent on Caesars’ Roman Plaza. The Gazillionaire was nearly $6 million in the hole that night after Widdles got carried away while filling out a check for the winners of a $6,000 lap dancing contest. Not that it would matter, for despite The Gazillionaire’s appearance and iconoclastic approach to personal hygiene, he’s got the green. That’s why he can afford The Green Fairy, who appears at the beginning of the show to a man who appears to be hallucinating

after partaking in an intoxicating emerald-colored libation. Maxim demonstrates his newfound super strength and superior sense of balance by building a mountain of chairs that he remains atop as it reaches higher and higher toward the top of the tent. He’s the first of a cavalcade of daredevils, skilled acrobats, unusual acts and traditional talents that have validated the Gazillionaire’s delusions of grandeur more than 6,000 times. “Gaz” is as filthy of mouth and mind as he is rich, frequently indulging his fondness for insult humor at the expense of unsuspecting audience members. Widdles gleefully punctuates his psycho-spiel with rimshots from her trusty snare when she’s not tossing perverse word salads. She clears out when superbly muscled specimens of human beings begin courting danger via velocity, feats of strength and high-flying maneuvers. A roller-skating duo becomes a spinning tornado. A gorilla performs burlesque. Ming and

Alexa hold onto straps as well as dear life as they execute airborne choreography. An Adonis with a chiseled physique and wet jeans splashes in and above an onstage bath. Tap Twins Sean and John Scott bring it on home with a freewheeling dance routine. There’s also They Who Cannot Be Named, an interpretive dance duo wearing costumes that reveal a little too much and are often on the verge of malfunctioning. It

may be the most unintentionally vulgar act on the Strip. Gaz has no fear of being dragged into court on obscenity charges. He has the best attorneys who will work for free tickets. He’s not writing any more $6,000 checks, but amateur lap dance contests will continue. It’s onward and upward to the gazillionth Absinthe show. How many that is exactly nobody knows, except the Gazillionaire.

After a long time away, the show returned to live performances and wild audiences last fall, and “The Keto Guido” is the first guest star to bring back his own unique spark to the sexy, funny production. While he’s been busy filming for TV over the course of the last two years, nothing can replace the feeling of entertaining fans live onstage for this budding performer. How does it feel to be back in Las Vegas, getting onstage at Chippendales again after such a long time away? I had no idea if it was ever going to come back, if the world was ever going to come back like before, or what things would survive and thrive. They didn’t have to call me back and they did, and it’s definitely flattering and an amazing feeling. You recently sold your house in L.A. and you’re back home in New York, so it must be cool to have such a fun reason to get back to the West Coast. Vegas is kind of like a second home. again, because my family is there, and I have a lot of business there. But Vegas is perfect because I can do the show, go out to the coast and get my fix, and pop into L.A., and Vegas is so chill. It’s more my speed. L.A. can get a little wild. In Vegas, the Strip is crazy but there’s so many other (things to do) like go hiking and take in all the surrounding nature. I’m excited to ride my bike out there. You’ve been biking and of course you’ve famously been jumping rope on Jersey Shore, which your castmates tease you about. But isn’t it all part of a fitness regimen to keep you in shape for Chippendales? I like to keep in shape for my mental health, too, since it has been a such a stressful time. I picked up a lot of new activities during (the pandemic) like those, and running through the woods, and making a nice meal for myself every night. popping. First it was keto, then jump rope. You were working on several different projects before the pandemic, including podcasts and stand-up comedy. What’s the status? I moved to Manhattan specifically so I could work on my comedy and be more immersed in the (environment). I’m doing a little bit of open mic stuff, more underground style. Comedy is not something you just jump into, but I’m getting pretty comfortable and definitely working on it. And I’m hoping to restart a podcast I’ll do in New York, too. I’m hoping I’ll be able to do

some (comedy) while I’m doing Chippendales in Vegas because you know there are plenty of great comedy clubs there. You’re a veteran at this point with Chippendales, but what were your first impressions of the show? I didn’t know what I was getting myself into when I first got here, but I loved it from the beginning. If you sit down for one show, you realize it’s more of an interactive, fun, comedy-type of show where everyone is just having a good time. It definitely is a staple show of Las Vegas and every time I tell people to come, they’ve never had a bad time.

focuses on one of the most important: The bedroom. This issue, Las Vegas Magazine’s Ken Miller interviewed Heidi Carlsen, lead interior designer with Stately Home Staging, to get some answers that will hopefully help you make a more informed decision when you are selling your property.

Why is the bedroom so important to stage when selling a home? The bedroom is typically one of the top priorities for homeowners because there’s so much time spent in the bedroom. Many people look at bedrooms, especially the primary bedroom, as a sanctuary—a place where you’re able to step

away, relax and unwind from your day. I’ve found that plenty of home sellers are focused on staging a bedroom because it’s easy for potential homebuyers to overthink how they’ll fit a kingsize bed, or generally lay out the space. Often, doorways and windows act as visual blockers, and many times it can be difficult for people to come up with functional ways to arrange their bedroom furniture. It’s the job of a good home-staging expert to solve for those hurdles and show how effective, inviting or cozy a space can really be. What are the most important things to remember in staging the bedroom? It’s essential to keep it super clean, very simple. And no clutter! Typically, a primary bedroom should be staged slightly more sophisticated, so that people can really visualize themselves living in the space. I always go as symmetrical as possible, which tends to be very appealing to the eye. For instance, placing nightstands on each side with matching lamps helps keep everything clean and simple. Always with every other room, try and use as much natural light as possible. And if that’s not available, lamps can really soften up a space. Use of mirrors can always make a space feel larger, and adding greenery (like trees or large botanicals) into the room can make the space feel more welcoming. What kind of design facets are important to consider in the bedroom apart from other areas of a house? Design-wise, continue to consider this space a homeowner’s refuge. I advise using softer colors and a lot of neutrals in mind. It’s a good idea to typically not go over the top with bright colors, just because you’ll want to provide a feeling of relaxation. What type of trends do you anticipate for the rest of 2022? Apart from the staging business, there are a few interior design choices that I don’t see going anywhere. The use of wallpaper, or 3D accent walls that sit behind the bed space, will most likely continue to be popular this year. There’s a big trend right now with Neotenic design, which was defined in 2019. Popularized in artistic design circles, the style uses juvenile features with soft edges and inorganic shapes.
