From the Editor The Next Step

On the day this issue of Las Vegas Magazine went to press, Nevada dropped its mask mandate. Governor Steve Sisolak cited a decline in overall COVID cases, and while masks will still be required in high-risk settings like medical facilities, visitors to our Strip can drop them in the nearest trash bin. That’s right: The Las Vegas you remember and love is on its way to completely returning. However, while planning this issue, the mask mandate was still very much in place. So for this week’s central feature of great places to snap that perfect Instagram shot (“Picture This,” p. 30), we had our model wear a mask at various iconic Las Vegas destinations. But mask or no, we’re sure you’ll agree it’s a fantastic-looking feature, one that’s sure to inspire you to venture beyond the property you’re currently staying at and really see the Strip. But while you’re out and about looking for these must-see destinations, make sure to also check out some of the other highlights in this week’s issue, including: • The arrival of one of the most exciting residencies of the year, Silk Sonic, a teaming of two of music’s biggest stars, Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, at Park MGM’s Dolby Live theater (“So, So Smooth,” p. 36); • Omega Mart, the amazing interactive experience by Meow Wolf at Area15, which

She’s Still the One

Shania Twain returns to successful Vegas residency Shania Twain has been a working singer since she was a child, performing in Ontario bars after midnight to supplement the family income. Now she has a show in Las Vegas that allows her to get to bed at a reasonable hour, and a deep song catalog to draw from. She’s weathered her share of criticism about combining country with pop hooks and videos that emphasize her alluring image, but she says the uplift she gets from fan support far outweighs the stings she’s received. Her fans inspire her and strengthen her singing, and to them she’s still the one. It’s been 25 years since Twain burst onto the charts with her sophomore album The Woman

in Me, changing the course of crossover country with irresistible song hooks and her down-home glamour image. After a childhood characterized by constant struggle and a dud of a debut album, the singer found both professional and personal chemistry with producer Mutt Lange. She scored her first hit single with “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” and became a mainstay on the charts for years after. Her 1997 album Come On Over spawned a succession of tracks that went into heavy rotation on radio, including “From This Moment On,” “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” and “You’re Still the One,” all of which

were featured in her residency sets before the pandemic. The midriff-baring outfits she wore in her videos made her a sex symbol, but her resounding chart success made her a superstar, and a slew of Grammys cemented her permanent place in the country music firmament. Twain’s life has undergone many changes—divorce from Lange, remarrying current husband Frédéric Thiébaud, and a battle with Lyme disease that affected her voice—but she says it’s all only made her stronger as a performer. Hilarity for Days When you get a ticket at the Comedy Cellar, you will be getting your money’s worth. Although clubs in Vegas often have just three comics (counting the host), you’ll see up to five bodies onstage during each show at the Rio. This week, Marc Cohen emcees (you may recognize him from The Sarah Silverman Show), and veteran comedian Rich Vos of Women Aren’t Funny headlines. Vos has had Comedy Central specials and appeared all over TV; he also hosts the My Wife Hates Me podcast with his wife. Eagle Witt, Dean Delray and Zarna Garg also appear. Garg, pictured, is a name you may be unfamiliar with, but she’s gained a lot of buzz over the past couple of years for her comedy, which explores her experience both as an immigrant and as a mom. Garg’s backstory is pretty unusual; she emigrated to the U.S. from India as a teen when she rejected a potential arranged marriage, and has earned degrees in both finance and law. Interactive exhibit encourages caring for the planet Beneath the giant Coke bottle and anthropomorphic M&Ms that mark the site of Showcase Mall, the first level of the multilevel complex has been transformed into Arcadia Earth, nearly 17,000 square feet of immersive installations inspired by environmentalism and ecology. It’s art-asattraction, or attraction-as-art, joining off-Strip Instagrammable experiences Area15 and Seven Magic Mountains. Arcadia Earth distinguishes itself by inviting visitors to become “in harmony with nature” for 45 minutes without having to leave the Strip. Designer Valentino Vettori says the Las Vegas version of Arcadia Earth is five times the expe-

rience of its predecessor in lower Manhattan. The texturized surface of what appears to be an ice cave is made from thousands of discarded plastic bags. Reams of recovered fishnets form rustic stalactites and a swing that hangs from the ceiling of one room, while walls breathe in another. A tunnel serves as an aquarium simulation, with a resident animated humpback whale that swims by and makes eye contact. Guests can install apps allowing them to access information via QR codes that inform about the amount of plastic that end up in the ocean, the harm nets cause to marine life, or how little sunblock it takes to damage a coral reef.

The installations were created by artists and are treated as such, with a security detail on hand to make sure visitors don’t immerse themselves too far into the environments. There is a shop at the end of the tour where guests can buy books or environmentally friendly bathroom and beauty products, but what Vettori really wants guests to take away as they exit Arcadia Earth and reenter the land of big Coke bottles, merry M&Ms and roller coasters riding around a replicated Manhattan skyline is inspiration that leads to action. “Go back into the world and do something better about it,” Vettori says. –Matt Kelemen

Nothing But the Classics Phil’s Steak House resembles an old school steakhouse, with plush seating and wood-accented everything—just super comfy. The Treasure Island stalwart serves up dishes like a huge 24-ounce bone-in ribeye chop, chicken marsala with mushroom sauce and thyme, and pan-fried branzino with caviar rice. But those aren’t the only standouts on the menu. It features so many classic steakhouse dishes, such as oven-roasted crab cakes with an Old Bay aioli, oysters Rockefeller with Pernod creamed spinach, jumbo shrimp cocktail, French onion soup with Gruyére cheese, and Caesar salad with herb croutons. Entrées include an 8-ounce filet mignon, Prime New York strip steak and shrimp scampi—all your favorites. Steaks come with steamed asparagus and choice of whipped or baked potato, and can be converted into surf and turf by adding crab legs, shrimp scampi, a 6-ounce lobster tail or a crabmeat béarnaise crust. Cool—and Hot! Some Las Vegas hotels have pretty cool front yards. Bellagio has its iconic fountains and The Venetian has its faux canals. And while those sights are impressive, they don’t hold a candle to the original, free large-scale entertainment attraction—the fire-spewing volcano in front of The Mirage. For more than 30 years, the volcano has attracted children and adults alike with its booming explosions, fireballs, faux lava and flames that are so hot you can practically feel them across the boulevard. Nightlife on High Some of the first words out of your mouth when walking through the doorway of Alle Lounge on 66 at Resorts World Las Vegas might be, “Wow, this is gorgeous!” This lounge is impressive on so many levels, the first being its location—that is, the 66th floor of the property, affording guests some of the best views of the city through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Next is the décor—sleek mixed with cozy. Enjoy tons of seating for larger groups, or for more

privacy there’s lots of little nooks perfect for those on a romantic date. Capping off the lounge’s impressive offerings is the cocktail program—handcrafted specialty cocktails abound, including several versions of the classic Old-Fashioned that uses different spirits as the base. Just Tour, Baby! Whether you’re a faithful fan of Raider Nation, a fan of football or just a fan of impressive architecture and design, the Allegiant Stadium Tour is both money and time very well spent. The hourlong walking tour has many stops along the way (some with special access that not every visitor to the stadium is privy to), stops like the Level 200 suites, containing personal VIP areas for Vegas bigwigs, including Raiders owner Mark Davis. (Fun fact: Davis’ suite is where you’ll find the only white stadium seating out of all of Allegiant Stadium’s 65,000 seats!) One fun stop is the Raiderettes locker room—you’ll see where they get ready for a game. You also enter the team’s locker room and check out the massage and medical areas, and the hydrotherapy pools. Hands-On Excellence The Fiery One, chef Gordon Ramsay, is more than his signature trinity of beef Wellington, risotto and sticky toffee pudding, and he proves it with Gordon Ramsay Burger, a casual spot where you can roll up your sleeves and enjoy a classic. As you’d expect from Ramsay, this restaurant serves up a Hell’s Kitchen burger, packing some heat with toppings like roasted jalapeños and jalapeño aioli. While some

heat is undercut by a little avocado and asadero cheese, this burger is still going to sting your tongue. For something even more gourmet, the truffle burger is topped with Tremor cheese, bacon, truffle butter, frisée, pickled shallot, fried egg and truffle aioli. The famed Fountains of Bellagio is an epic feat in design and production, as more than 200 water-emitting devices spread across 1,000 feet rocket water nearly 500 feet into the air to songs like Cher’s “Believe,” Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and Elvis Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas.” Catch it every day beginning at 3 p.m. during the week and starting at noon on the weekends. Every half hour another show starts, and after 8 p.m. it’s every 15 minutes. Plan to arrive a few minutes early to stake out a spot to watch. Light, Sound and Revelation Think differently at Luxor production Blue Man Group is universally regarded as out of this world, in a figurative sense, by witnesses to its scintillating spectacle of light, sound and discovery. In a literal sense, the origins of the wide-eyed cerulean sensualists who appear onstage in threes is more complicated. They exist in several dimensions at once: physically in their theater at Luxor; imaginatively in their own metaverse; and energetically in the shared consciousness between cast, crew and audience during each performance. The Blue Man Group distract highly evolved Earthling bipeds with an escape from stressful surface energy and nourish them with a return to the sense of wonder they were born with. In

the coveted Poncho Section, patrons proactive enough to wear washable fabrics can get an especially intimate point of view of the proceedings. Every seat in Blue Man Theater is flooded with sound, though, as live musicians back up the Blue Men while they encounter peculiar tubular contraptions and reimagined drum sets. Crunchy cereal is just as good of a sound as striking plastic pipes to a Blue Man, just not as messy. The Blue Men are mainly a mess to themselves during performances, but it depends on what is going into their mouths. There is a gooey substance that forms into cohesive slices of cylindrical matter that creates a release of Blue

Man Endorphins after Blue Men catch them in their mouths when thrown from a distance. Some say it’s an illusion of reversed time, and the audience is witnessing Blue Men eject marshmallows from their mouths in hopes that they will grow to become new Blue Men. While this has yet to happen, the Blue Men relate to and wordlessly encourage thinking differently. Their kinetic energy travels on wavelengths into the audience and can be amplified by reaction, participation and positive mental attitude. Spice Things Up Ever since Buffalo chicken rose to national fame in the 1990s, it’s been synonymous with group outings and sports. And for a limited time, one of the best hamburger spots on the Las Vegas Strip is celebrating all things hot and spicy with its Buffalo-themed menu. Shake Shack’s new Buffalo chicken sandwich is a hand-breaded, antibiotic-free chicken breast cooked sous vide-style and served on a toasted potato bun. There’s plenty of Buffalo sauce, but Shake Shack throws in ranch sauce to balance out the heat. And what goes better with a sandwich than some fries? Order them with or without cheese, dusted with Buffalo seasoning and served with ranch dipping sauce. Yes, this is some spicy stuff! Luckily, Shake Shack also has some limited-time shakes to put out the fire, including the Wake & Shake (Red Bay coffee with vanilla frozen custard, maple syrup and orange zest) and the Chocolate Pie (chocolate ganache toasted oat pie, chocolate frozen custard and croissant cookie crumbles). The Wild Side It’s a nice respite from the buzz of the Las Vegas Strip, and it’s an attraction that many might not know about, but everyone really should. The Wildlife Habitat can be found on the Flamingo’s 4-acre tropical grounds, and is free for guests to stroll, stop and take a break and take in the beauty of nature and its inhabitants. Mosey on Over Distinct characters drive the experience at the Atomic Saloon Show. Afterwards, you’ll remember their names as well as what they did and how they did it, and how their performance made you laugh or cheer. The saloon’s rough-and-rowdy proprietor (and host), Boozy Skunkton is a versatile performer who can do just about anything the others at the saloon can do. You’ll also spend time with the saloon’s resident singing cowboy, Blue Jackson, who gives the

audience its first taste of the silly and sultry entertainment yet to come. Jean-Louis appears to be the saloon’s mild-mannered handyman, but when he gets his time to shine, he confidently reveals aerial acrobatics skills that defy descriptions. Combine that with the art deco-forward design and the lively and social aspect of the tapas lounge, and you have an immersive dining experience. During his long, illustrious career in the food and beverage industry—one that continues to flourish after more than two decades—Jason Rocheleau shares what he loves most: “It’s the entertainment and hospitality factor of the industry,” he says. “I love putting on a show every night. It’s infectious. It’s rewarding. I love the development and creative side, too. I want to continue to create. To watch others create and grow and provide that for the team.” And after so many years helping others open their own bars and restaurants, Rocheleau is ecstatic and grateful to launch his own baby, Bar Zazu at Resorts World, where he serves as partner and vice president. Rocheleau, born in Athens, Greece, moved to Connecticut in his pre-teens, and during his college years began barbacking at small bars around campus. After a couple years he switched to managing restaurants, went on to get certified as a sommelier, and was eventually

recruited by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck to help run the chef’s Vegas venues. Rocheleau then went on to work for star chef Michael Mina for more than a dozen years, helping the chef launch more than 30 restaurants around the globe. After spending more than 13 years on the road, “It was time to tap out,” says Rocheleau. “That’s when the finance guy of Bar Zazu reached out and said, ‘I hear you’re the guy to open up restaurants.’ And that was it, and a year later here we are. Bar Zazu is a unique concept because it’s multifaceted. I wanted something fun and edgy, a little bit more Vegas if you will. It’s built to be social here.” After putting in so many years, I had to ask Rocheleau if he’s ready to slow down and maybe take a break or try a different industry. His response: “Never—this is just too much fun. This really is. I never did anything other than this, and I can’t imagine doing anything other than this.” –Kiko Miyasato

Although most lounges will have some form of fruity beverages on the menu, a few concentrate on the tiki drink. First up has to be Frankie’s Tiki Room (702.785.3110), a fabulous little dive on Charleston Boulevard just off I-15, which features seriously cool décor, classic cocktails like the mai tai or piña colada, and specialties of the house like the Fink Bomb, with two kinds or rum, melon liqueur and pineapple juice. The Tiki Bandit has a blend of rums, plus pineapple and passion fruit juices, while the Sea Hag features gold rum, blackberry brandy, guava nectar and Cherry Heering. Now, that’ll cure what ails ye.

On Spring Mountain Road, super popular The Golden Tiki (702.433.4967) also features themed south Pacific décor in a slightly larger room that wraps around a good-sized bar, and behind that bar are a couple of incredibly talented bartenders, including lead mixologist Adam Rains. You’ll find inventive cocktails like a Painkiller with Pusser’s Rum, pineapple Dole Whip, orange and pineapple juices, and coconut cream, garnished with fresh nutmeg. If you feel like it, ask to get it lit up with a “shot of fire.” Most nights, you’ll find live entertainment, and every day, you can enjoy happy hour from 4-6 p.m. There are a few other places around town, like the seasonal Tiki di Amore (702.433.4967) in the back patio of the Casa di Amore restaurant

on Tropicana Avenue, with a small L-shaped bar and island décor. It’s closed for the season, but rip out this article to remind you about it on your next trip. At Bali Hai, a golf course on the south Strip near Mandalay Bay, the Tiki Bar and Grille (888.427.6678) just opened with a few choices to enhance your after-golf meal, like the Bahama Mama, the signature drink, with Giffard Banane du Bresil liqueur, RumHaven coconut rum, Caribbean rum and orange and pineapple juices; or Bali Hai mai tai, with Ron Zacapa Solera rum, Il Tramonto amaretto and orange curaçao. Both of these are nice and clean tasting, perfect to accompany shrimp tacos or adventurous chicken wings (order the habanero if you’re really, really adventurous). –Nina King

Giada De Laurentiis is a California girl. And so am I. And maybe that’s why I’m so enamored of her Las Vegas restaurant, the eponymous Giada. Giada-the-restaurant encapsulates that California vibe, from the entry at the top of an escalator to the cozy bar and the elegant yet comfortable seating that fills the dining room. The dining room itself is a curved area with windows overlooking the Strip; it’s replete with wood, white walls and overhead fans, reminding you of the outdoor rooms of so many California homes. The Italian cuisine here reflects De Laurentiis’ upbringing in both Italy and California, a style she brings to life in her Food Network show, Giada at Home. Dinner at Giada should start with a cocktail, and the signature “G” is one of the best. Macchu Pisco, pineapple juice and lime brighten the drink, while apricot preserves add color and freshness. Seafood towers here can feed up to three or five, depending on size, and include Maine lobster, French Kiss and kusshi oysters (both from Canada), king crab and shrimp cocktail. Meat and cheese boards also come in two sizes, with prosciutto di Parma, finocchiona, soppressata, pecorino Toscano, Gorgonzola and buffalo mozzarella among the offerings. There are plenty of antipasti choices, from bacon-wrapped dates with spicy Italian sausage and orzo meatballs to lobster arancini and a selection of marinated olives. Entrées include petite filets with a cheesy mashed butternut squash, cacciatore-style Italian fried chicken, branzino and a 28-ounce

For some of us, pasta is the only thing we want at an Italian restaurant, no matter how many other delicacies are presented. Here at Giada, it comes in all forms. Try cacio e pepe for a classic bite with pecorino Toscano and

black pepper; bucatini with Calabrian chili for a spicier feel; ravioli with lobster; rigatoni with a vegetable Bolognese; and Giada’s signature lemon spaghetti, with shrimp and mascarpone. You can also have chicken, shrimp or Maine lobster tail added to your dish if you wish, or indulge in risotto with crab and scallops instead. Come for brunch and you’ll find a Giada classic, the Sunrise polenta waffle, with pancetta, a béchamel sauce and sunny-side up eggs; a salmon Benedict with piquillo peppers and prosecco hollandaise; cavatelli and spaghetti; lobster hash; and my absolute favorite sandwich of all time (no hyperbole here), the grilled cheese with lemon pesto and heirloom tomatoes. It’s so simple, but the flavor is unrivaled. The pastry basket here also gets high marks; it’s hard not to gobble it all up and not leave room for that delicious sandwich. A glass of prosecco or sangria will make the morning even nicer. Desserts vary, but Giada’s famous lemon-ricotta cookies are really all that—and tiramisu, sorbetti and gelato are excellent as well.

Currently operating with its second location just east of the Strip on Flamingo Road—while refurbishing its original Sahara Avenue spot for a future reopening—Lotus has been hailed as one of the most authentic dining experiences to be had outside Thailand, with signature dishes

Delicious specialties from Singapore are a bit harder to find around town, but the new Famous Foods Street Eats food hall at Resorts World has you covered thanks to Boon Tong Kee (702.767.7000), a beloved Chinatown institution in that famous food city since 1979. The cold poached Hainan chicken is the specialty of the house, tender and richly flavored poultry served simply with fragrant rice and cucumber plus sambal, soy and ginger-scallion sauces for dipping. There’s also a roasted chicken version of the dish as well as curry laksa noodles with pulled chicken, bean sprouts, potato and fried shallots. This is some of the most refined street food you can find in Las Vegas. For Vietnamese comfort food, head to the Las Vegas version of Chinatown and make a stop at District One Kitchen & Bar (702.413.6868), a favorite haunt for hospitality workers from all the cool bars and restaurants around town. D1 is known for its delicious small plates like oxtail fries, goi ga chicken salad, pork belly buns and garlic chicken wings, but its over-the-top take on traditional Vietnamese pho noodle soup—including additions like whole Maine lobster, bone marrow, and roasted beef shank—will have you coming back for more. Korean cuisine continues to climb the ranks of popularity in the U.S. and in Las Vegas, and celebrated Los Angeles chef Roy Choi is serving his tried-and-true favorites at Best Friend (888.769.2464) at Park MGM. Indulge in Choi’s famous Kogi barbecue short rib tacos, kalbi beef, garlic and soy chicken and kimchi fried rice, and amp up your foodie party with fun fusion dishes like uni dynamite rice, kimchi ramen and buttermilk fried chicken with sweet and sour chili sauce. Veteran comedian Don Barnhart brings the best medicine to downtown

is one of the great veteran comedians in the Las Vegas entertainment scene, a road-tested performer who has been based in Sin City for two decades while keeping audiences in stitches across the country and around the world. But in recent years, Barnhart has refocused his energies on developing the Delirious Comedy Club at Downtown Grand, where he performs regularly while ushering in other talented comedians. It was an essential entertainment venue in the city coming out of the COVID shutdown and remains even more relevant today. When did you take over the comedy programming at Downtown Grand? We started in October 2019, with my wife and I as partners, and we’ve been there ever since. I started back in the 1980s after a got a job at a comedy and magic club in Hermosa Beach as the doorman, and pretty soon I was booking the club and working as the emcee. I left in 1987 to do stand-up full-time because Jay Leno once gave me some great advice: “If you want to be a comic, you’ve got to go on the road.” So I packed up and never looked back, but now I’m living the dream because I’ve got my own show and I don’t have to go on the road anymore. And your Delirious Comedy Club was one of the first venues to bring the funny stuff back to the live stage in Las Vegas during the pandemic. What did you learn from that experience? What we learned from opening early is that people need to laugh. That old cliché that laughter is the best medicine really is true. It releases stress and lets us lighten the mood, even if we are taking on tough subjects. The (restrictions) at first were challenging, but we had to abide by those rules

or wait, and people really wanted to come out and see a show, so we were grateful to be open even under those conditions. I’ve been doing military tours since 1992, going overseas, and those are not ideal shows. You’re performing on a flatbread truck on an aircraft carrier under planes taking off. But you can do comedy anywhere, and if people want to laugh, we’re going to show up. What is it that sets this venue apart from other Vegas clubs? The Downtown Grand has been so amazing. Originally, we were in a smaller room, but with COVID restrictions, the casino came to us and said, “Let’s work together,” and we moved to a bigger room and a really nice, open environment. It’s more friendly and inviting, open but still intimate. The capacity is at 166 people but we like to keep it down to about 110. It’s not about how many people we can cram into the space, we just want everyone to feel safe and supported and enjoy themselves. You’ve performed a different act based on hypnotism over the years as well. What’s your performance like these days? For Delirious, it’s straight stand-up. We also have the House of Magic at 6 p.m., which is a comedy-magic show. I still do hypnosis, but I haven’t brought that show back yet, partially because it involves so many audience volunteers and we’re not really ready to have a stage full of people doing crazy stuff. But your brand of comedy is still very interactive. My background is in improv. We have our set list and our jokes, but there’s a lot of improv and things change daily. There’s always something in the news to work on, but we tend to stay away from politics. We’re not here to polarize people or push an agenda; we’re here to entertain.

There may be shortages in some sectors of retail, but the shelves are as full at Omega Mart today as they were when the experiential art destination opened at Area15 a year ago. Dented cans of Camel’s Dream of Mushroom and Barely Barley meal substitute “sops” are abundant, as are jars of P-2000 Cracker Spackle and bottles of home freshener spray Who Told You This Was Butter? There is no shortage of visitors from around the world either, with reactions to Meow Wolf’s offStrip maximalist satire of consumerism expressed in a variety of languages by “shoppers” perusing the aisles. Verbal expressions give way to speechless amazement when exploration uncovers entries to an alternate universe. Like a wardrobe enabling children to enter Narnia, Omega Mart has several passageways hidden in plain sight that allow explorers into a world of pure imagination—some 60 environments created by a collective of artists with insatiable appetites for surmounting art-world conventions including The Infinitizer (pictured). Feb. 18 marks the anniversary of Omega Mart as a Meow Wolf milestone, reinforcing the artists’ shared belief that whatever ultimately lies behind their collective vision, they are doing it right. Still, creative director Spencer Olsen felt a little too close to the project to objectively conclude how successful things turned out when the doors first opened. “I had no idea if this was good, if people were going to like it,” he says. “There is a part of the audience that doesn’t get it, but I’ve been remarkably pleased by the reactions. I’ve seen these in-depth analysis videos on YouTube … some of these people found connections and story threads

that we couldn’t have even planned.” Manifesting permanent immersive art experiences that people would pay to visit has been a goal that had firmed up for the group of Santa Fe visionaries by 2011 when they created The Due Return, a full-sized explorable ship inside a Santa Fe gallery. The next year, they made a prototype Omega Mart, with 1,000 schoolchildren helping to create its sardonic consumer goods. Meow Wolf, under the patronage of Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, then transformed an abandoned Santa Fe bowling alley. The House of Eternal Return was an immediate hit when it opened in 2018 and paved the way for successors in Denver and Las Vegas, where knowledge and wisdom culled from previous projects were fully exploited. At Omega Mart, that resulted in a destination with four sprawling thematic “anchor spaces.” Taking in the sights and sounds while randomly exploring every twist and turn of Omega Mart’s four giant themed areas is sensually satisfying on its own, but there’s a storyline involving Omega Mart’s fictional parent company Dramcorp, its missing founder Walter Dram and his daughter Cecelia. Unraveling the enigma behind Dramcorp is a deep dive that conspiracy buffs may find worth the time commitment. “We didn’t want it to feel like an evil corporation,” says Olsen of Dramcorp. “It should either be good or ambiguous, or at least well-intentioned. … Ultimately it’s about a family.”

ith weeks to go before the Allman Family Revival tour kicks off with an opening date in his hometown of St. Louis, Devon Allman is immersed in keeping the various pre-production logistics of the traveling roadshow rolling. There is merchandise to approve, video wall images to curate, considerations for his own group The Allman Betts Band, and setlists that vary with every city. “It’s kind of an ever-changing landscape,” says Allman in a phone interview from St. Louis. “The core setlist is going to be the same throughout, but there’s going to be certain nights when there’s going to be new performers, so there’s going to be tweaks every night. It’s really doing 19 setlists and everything that goes into prepping that.” The Allman Family Revival concept has grown faster than Allman has learned to delegate. What started as an invitational concert-as-memorial for his late father, Gregg, at the Fillmore West, inspired by 1976 concert documentary The Last Waltz, evolved with increasing demand. “This is the first time we’ve brought this celebration on tour,” says Allman. “We started it five years ago in San Francisco and it did really well, so they wanted to do it the next year and they wanted to do two nights. So we did that, and then the next year, a couple of other cities wanted the Revival, so we did San Francisco, Denver, New York City. This year, we’ve got 19 cities, so it’s fully on tour and it’s just a big beast. It’s got a lot of moving parts.” Following the format of Waltz, a concert by The Band

that featured guest performances by Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison and Neil Young, Allman Family Revival shows feature artists who play one of their own songs and a favorite Allman Brothers cover, with Allman Betts Band backing them up. The December 2019 show at Fillmore West features Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Wet Willie harmonica player Jimmy Hall, Big Head Todd and Robin Zander, who followed up singing lead on “Ramblin’ Man” with Cheap Trick’s “Surrender” and Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman.” Randolph and Hall are on deck for the Las Vegas edition of Allman Family Revival, (Feb. 24) as well as drummer Kenny Aronoff (John Mellencamp), Marc Ford (The Black Crowes), Cody and Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars and sons of producer Jim Dickinson), Lilly Hiatt (daughter of John Hiatt) and Lamar Williams Jr., whose father replaced original Allman Brothers bassist Berry Oakley. Oakley’s namesake plays bass in Allman Betts Band alongside guitarists/vocalists Duane Betts and Devon Allman. The Revival gives their circle of relations an opportunity to reinforce musical blood ties and, in the case of opening duo River Kittens, to form new ones. “One plays acoustic (guitar), one plays mandolin. Amazing harmonies,” says Allman. “I got to produce their debut record and put it out on my label. They’re from St. Louis. They’re really snarky, fun. Just amazingly talented. They always win over the crowd. … They’re gonna get everybody out there, get everybody loose and ready to have a good time.”

Custom home builder delivers design masterpieces across the Las Vegas Valley In Las Vegas, Blue Heron is known for its high-end, striking designs. Last summer, the company sold its most expensive home ever, Vegas Modern 001 (and the most expensive yet sold in Las Vegas as of press time). We talked to founder Tyler Jones about the company and building the home. Your family has been in Vegas for a really, really long time. But Blue Heron has only been

established since 2004. What was your impetus behind founding the company? I grew up with my father’s (home building) company … and ultimately went to architecture school at University of Colorado in Boulder. By the time I was 25, when we started up the company, I’d already had quite a bit of both construction and design experience. Blue Heron was a way to put it all together to come up with a process and a workflow for our clients and for

our team. It was more efficient, and was always about this ultra-strong architectural vision. A lot of Blue Heron architecture has a (particular) contemporary feel. Why does that type of style resonate with you? Our Vegas Modern design philosophy is all about being authentic to the culture and what people who live in Las Vegas ... need and want in their homes. It’s also about what is

appropriate to build in the desert with modern technologies and modern abilities. It’s really kind of a common-sense approach, and it’s also beautiful. There are no rules to the type of design we do, which is very important to us because we like to push boundaries and (we’re) constantly evolving. The Vegas Modern 001 house recently sold; it is incredibly beautiful. What in that home were you most proud of? The cohesive nature of the design. You can really tell that it was done by the same team that had a perfectly aligned vision, and we didn’t compromise on any of that as we went all the way through a very complicated and expensive

That takes an incredibly talented team, and it takes a special structure from a company standpoint, to be able to orchestrate a large group of professionals coming from different disciplines. It was the most expensive house sold in Las Vegas yet. What do you think contributed to its quick sale? Well, I had the opportunity to meet with the buyer personally. And he recognized that this was really a masterpiece, and what the Blue Heron team did in Vegas Modern 001 is not otherwise available in Las Vegas. There’s nothing else out there that’s been designed to that same level and executed to that same level.

Thinking about Las Vegas’ future and home building, where do you think it’s going? I just don’t think there’s a limit to what could happen in Las Vegas. As a city, we’re still in our infancy. I think technology moves very quickly these days. So what’s possible in terms of how you design and build homes changes month to month. That’s very exciting for us because we like to stay at the very cutting edge of construction science and design. And the modern lifestyle is evolving faster than ever. Part of the fun of what we do is to continuously adapt and evolve to meet those needs. We’re just getting started on Vegas Modern 002 right now. That’ll be our next step (and) it’s kind of our research and development. –Nina King
