I’m sure that more than a few of you reading this magazine right now are here in town this week to enjoy the National Finals Rodeo at the Thomas & Mack Center. If so, welcome! We love this time of year, and not just because of Thanksgiving and Christmas. The rodeo is a special time, one that goes hand in hand with the spirit of giving, good will and cheer. One of the best parts of NFR is all the country acts that head to town to keep audiences entertained, and Las Vegas Magazine’s associate editor Kiko Miyasato has put together a fantastic roundup of not only the acts playing Golden Nugget, but some of the rodeo-themed fashion accoutrements you can find there to help you get in the spirit of the occasion (“Rodeo Central,” p. 30). Of course, the rodeo is in town for quite some time—until Dec. 11. So that means you will most likely have some downtime when not enjoying the bull-riding action. experience.” One look at his menu and you’ll know how serious he’s being. Start with small bites on the degustation section, particularly Hawaiian kampachi, highlighted by petit radishes, pineapple mint and Koshihikari rice, and ricotta gnudi, so flavorful with consommé royale, Parmesan and Alba white truffles.

And vegetarians can rest easy, as there’s a bountiful portion of the menu dedicated to meatless dishes, including red kuri squash veloté, featuring podi spice, Parmesan fondue and black winter truffle, and Strawberry & Milk, made with Harry’s Berries, Sicilian pistachios and orange mint. –Ken Miller

Take a Tour

Italian restaurant wows with both views and food I’m a big fan of Giada De Lairentiis, so much that I signed up for her newsletter, which sends recipes and stories to your email. But if you’re in Vegas and don’t want to wait until you get home to get a little Giada in your life, reserve a place at brunch (or dinner) at her eponymous restaurant. This venue was De Laurentiis’ first restaurant in Vegas and, indeed, anywhere, when it opened in 2014. The décor and cuisine captures The Food Network star’s heritage—during her early childhood years, she spent a lot of time in her filmmaker grandfather Dino De Laurentiis’ Italian restaurant and her later years in Southern California. You’ll find light colors and comfy seating surrounded on two sides with soaring windows that overlook the Strip and Flamingo Road. Scattered about are framed posters paying homage to her famous grandfather’s most famous films.

If you are booked for a weekend brunch, fabulous! The brunch menu features a range of delicious cocktails and breakfast dishes with a California twist, like the lobster hash with sunny-side up eggs or the salmon Benedict, with wilted spinach, poached eggs, piquillo peppers and a prosecco Hollandaise. The Sunrise polenta waffle is accented with béchamel sauce, sunny-side up eggs and pancetta. Brunch also provides some heartier options, from hazelnut chocolate chip pancakes to a grilled cheese with lemon pesto and heirloom tomatoes. And having also indulged in dinner numerous times here, I can give the huge thumbs up on both the bucatini with Calabrian chili and the cacio e pepe. But you can’t go wrong with any of the pasta. If you are a lobster fan, try the ravioli. And Giada’s signature lemon spaghetti features

shrimp, mascarpone, lemon and basil—now that really feels like it represents California. If you need a meatier entrée, try the Italian fried chicken, cacciatore style; the branzino with pomegranate glaze; or the 28-ounce bone-in Tuscan ribeye with a sunny-side up egg. For a lighter dinner, try the salmon with ricotta cavatelli, fava beans and Meyer lemon. Cap that off with the smashed, fried lemon potatoes. If you notice a trend of dishes with lemon, it’s true—the menu is liberally anointed with the citrus, even down to possibly the most signature of Giada’s signature dishes—the lemon ricotta cookies. You can choose from several desserts to end your meal, but get Giada’s favorite cookies, and an espresso, and you know your night will end right. –Nina King The Cromwell, 855.442.3271

Legends in Concert remains one of the longest-running and most entertaining shows on the Las Vegas Strip, largely because it’s always rotating its lineup, practically guaranteeing you’ll never see the same show twice. And starting this week, the show introduces a new lineup, one focused squarely on a huge draw in Vegas: Country music. “Legends of Country” features four impersonators looking, moving and sounding just like their real-life counterparts: Stacey Whitton Summers as Shania Twain; Chad Collins as Luke Bryan; Dean Simmons as Garth Brooks; and Karen Hester as Dolly Parton (fans of Hester will recognize her from the E! show Clash of the Cover Bands). All will not only perform classic hits, but holidays songs as well. And, as with all Legends performances, all the talented performers are ably assisted by a world-class live band, which perform holiday classics like Brian Setzer Orchestra’s version of “Jingle Bells” and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24,” and backup dancers who provide plenty of eye-popping moves. The holiday show runs from Nov. 26-Dec. 30. Come and enjoy the holidays, Vegas-style. –Ken Miller

Food With a View The beauty of the Strip is that a night in Vegas could easily feel like a night in Venice, New York City or some other oft-romanticized place that isn’t the little desert town you’re currently visiting. Well, at Mon Ami Gabi, you’ll be transported to a charming Parisian restaurant, which all at once feels like a casual French café and a chic, fine-dining establishment. If you’re lucky to snag a seat on the patio, you’ll think you’re dining at an authentic

French bistro. And you get he incredible view of the Fountains of Bellagio! When dining here, some of the obvious selections include the prime steak frites and trout almondine, but you’d feel equally satisfied ordering the cavatelli pasta with tiger shrimp or the seared salmon with confit potatoes. You Will Be Dancing

Tribute show revisits classic tunes and memories In 1978, I was obsessed with two movies: Grease and Saturday Night Fever. I went to see Grease three times (waiting in line what seemed like hours each time), and although I was too young to see Fever, I was struck by two things: Its poster, featuring a mythical-looking John Travolta, striking his now-classic disco pose in a white suit; and the soundtrack, particularly the tracks by the Bees Gees—I had simply not heard anything like it before. To this day, that music still captivates me and takes me back. In other words, I’m the ideal audience for The Australian Bee Gees Show, a tribute to the legendary trio of The Brothers Gibb—Maurice, Robin and Barry, rendered beautifully by Wayne Hosk-

ing, David Scott and Michael Clift, respectively (on the night I attended, James Simpson and Matthew Baldoni filled in as Robin and Barry). They bring back 1978 to brilliant, vivid life, delivering crisp, note-perfect renditions of not only every Fever classic they wrote, either for themselves or other artists—“Stayin’ Alive,” “How Deep Is Your Love,” “Night Fever,” “You Should Be Dancing,” “More Than a Woman,” “If I Can’t Have You” and “Jive Talkin’”—but also the theme to Grease, written by Barry. But that’s only the beginning of the fun on tap. The trio performs nearly 30 songs over the course of 70 minutes, some in their entirety, some in small snippets or as part of medleys.

There’s also a fair amount of humor throughout— Hosking will comment on how good that night’s audience is at singing along (and how he says it every night, but really means it this time), and during a moment when all three men are singing into one microphone, Hosking gets forced to the side so that just two men can sing, and he’s not sure what to do with himself until rejoining his bandmates at the mic. Best of all, the audience is fully encouraged to dance at “Club Mo,” off to the side of the stage. When the disco starts, the theater is transformed into a nightclub—and people like me are transported right back to 1978. Excalibur, 702.597.7600

Not that average sports bar you go to. We’re definitely that elevated party bar.” Money, Baby! stretches across 15,000 square feet and is filled with über-cool design touches incorporating awesome graphics, graffiti and artwork, all with a playful, fun spin. More than 200 TVs are set around the venue for optimal sports viewing, and guests can even place bets at the in-venue sportsbook. “We can play up to 20 different games at once,” Goldbaum said. It’s also a must-visit spot for its food offerings, with standouts like 18-inch, all-beef hot dogs you can get in four different recipes, Beyond Meat burger, Southern fried chicken sandwich and much, much more. And let’s talk cocktails. The Money Mule features Figenza fig-infused vodka, lime, and Fever Tree ginger beer. Bourbon lover? Straight-Up Comedy When you go see Eddie Griffin perform at his stand-up comedy residency, you better be ready. The veteran funnyman has never shied away from controversial or taboo topics over the course of his 30-year career onstage, and he’s not about to change his ways after a global pandemic. Griffin’s latest comedy special, Laughin’ Through Your Mask, captured his performance the day after the Capitol attack in January. “It wrote itself,” he laughs. “Those (rioters) proved building a wall does not work, the way they climbed the Capitol walls.” A longtime Las Vegas resident, Griffin pulls no punches. –Brock Radke Sahara Las Vegas, 21+. 702.761.7000

Legend Looms Large

Exhibit brings tragic ocean liner’s saga to life You’ve seen James Cameron’s impressive blockbuster movie about it. (Actually, you’ve seen it multiple times, haven’t you? Admit it!) The story of the Titanic remains one of the most fascinating in history, partly because of the sheer scope of the ship itself, and partly because of the seemingly endless storylines of the passengers. And if you want to look inside the stories of the real people involved (sorry, Jack and Rose never existed), then head straight to Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition. Partly museum and partly interactive experience, this attraction is absorbing to the point of distraction. No detail is left out: the design of the ship (and the efforts to get it built); re-creations

of cabins; profiles of some of the famous people who stayed in those cabins; a simulation of the deck of the ship on the fateful night it sank, complete with accurate air temperature; and a large piece of ice you can touch to give you an idea of just how cold it was that night. The information you take in during this unforgettable tour will stay with you for some time. What makes it particularly powerful is that, upon entering, you are given the name of one of the passengers, and must go through the whole exhibit before you’re able to ascertain if your passenger survived. (There’s a large wall at the end that lists those who survived and those who did not.)

One thing the movie got right: That amazingly ornate grand staircase, here immaculately re-created to give you some sense of how opulent and grandiose this whole project was. It’s almost like they tried to put Las Vegas on a boat! Perhaps the most striking part of Titanic is The Big Piece, a huge section of the actual ship. Regardless of how you’ve seen it in your mind, nothing can compare you for the spectacle. In an instant, you are transported to that night, wondering how it must have felt as this beast began to sink. Big Easy Feel

Although Ruth’s Chris Steak House is a chain restaurant, dining there always feels like a unique experience, especially when that experience is in Las Vegas. Part of it has to do with the ambience, for the restaurant’s floor-to-ceiling windows offer incredible views of Caesars Palace, which is a wonderful backdrop for a meal. But since the restaurant was founded in New Orleans, there’s a distinctive, easygoing feel that permeates the restaurant and its menu. Start your meal with a specialty cocktail like the refreshing French Quarter 75, a mix of gin, St-Germain, prosecco and lemon. Then it’s time for some comforting appetizers, like the blue crab cakes served with a sizzling lemon butter or the chilled seafood tower stacked with Maine lobster, Alaskan king crab legs, jumbo shrimp and lump blue crab. But you’re likely visiting Ruth’s Chris because of their stellar steaks, and you can’t go wrong with the 11-ounce filet, the 16-ounce New York strip, or the 24-ounce T-bone, all of which are broiled and served to your table sizzling on a 500-degree plate. Xavier Mortimer, a French illusionist who you may have seen on shows such as America’s Got Talent and Penn & Teller: Fool Us, or in his series of YouTube videos that garnered huge response, opened up his newest show, The Dream Maker at The STRAT. experience is also chock-full of facts you can read throughout the exhibit: Every drop of blood in the body passes through the heart once per minute; the tongue is made up of 16 individual muscles; the kidneys filter impurities from the blood at a rate of 15 gallons per hour. General manager finds the perfect property If you ask Kimberley Hughes why Park MGM is one of the best spots to drink, dine and have fun, she’d say, “We have, by far, the best bars in the city,” not to mention the proximity to T-Mobile Arena and its slate of ome of the best artists in the world—Cher, Lady Gaga, Aerosmith and Bruno Mars. “It’s unlike any experience you can get anywhere else on the Strip.” Hughes has worked at the property as the general manager of lounges for the past few years, overseeing Juniper Cocktail Lounge, BetMGM Sportsbook & Bar and Mama Rabbit (where we conducted the shoot and interview); and recently she was promoted to general manager for Roy Choi’s Best Friend. One of her passion projects during her time as general manager of lounges was helping to open Mama Rabbit in 2019. “Bricia Lopez was the cultural liaison on the project,” says the Portland, Ore., native. “She wanted to open a place that was reflective of Oaxaca, Mexico,

and have it be authentic. It was my job was to execute her vision. Mama Rabbit is the best of both worlds. You can really appease any expert level tequila or mezcal drinker, or you can also find things that a beginner will like.” As a level two cicerone, and with more than a decade of bartending experience, Hughes had to learn all about tequila and mezcal—when Mama Rabbit first opened there were 500 selections. “I did a lot of training on mezcal and tequila,” she says. “It made me a fan of mezcal.” And Hughes continues to be a fan of the property she helped grow. “I started my career in Portland, but I could never have the experiences I’ve had here,” she says. “Where else could I work next to Lady Gaga and meet all of her people that work with her? That would never happen anywhere else than Vegas and Park MGM. Impressive restaurant lounges offer a laid-back experience There are many Las Vegas restaurants that offer exquisite lounge areas where you can still indulge in the food and beverage offerings. Make a dinner reservation, but while in town try doing it a little differently by hanging out inside the lounge area for a more laid-back, cool experience. At The Venetian and The Palazzo, Tao Asian Bistro has one of the sexiest lounge areas—an interior design of East-meets-West wrapped inside a decadent and dark environment. Just a short walk away is another Asian delight, Mott 32, where Chinese-inspired cuisine and cocktails can be enjoyed in the beautiful and expansive lounge designed with an upscale bohemian flair. For a cool, Cuba-meets-old-school-Vegas experience, head to the Flamingo’s Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse, where the lounge area has

Two favorite restaurant lounges that transport you back in time to that old-school Las Vegas experience are perennial favorite The Steakhouse at Circus Circus—its intimate lounge area surrounded by dark woods and vintage-inspired furnishings—and Edge Steakhouse at Westgate Las Vegas—its petite lounge just outside the main dining room offers high-top tables and just a few seats at the bar that make for a perfect setting for a romantic date night. For some group fun, Giada at The Cromwell offers a living room-type lounge area with low tables and sofas, all with a feminine touch to the design—a great place to gather with girlfriends for a cocktail. Another fun restaurant lounge,

one that whisks guests away to old-school New York City, is Carbone at Aria. The lounge here is spacious, and the interior design is an upscale nod to the postwar boom. For a period-piece design, there’s perhaps no more vogue display of classic, speakeasy-style surroundings than the lounge inside Mayfair Supper Club at Bellagio. The lounge is so elegantly decorated that having a cocktail and bite here is a true only-in-Las Vegas moment. For another throwback design perfectly executed, the 1960s- and ’70s-inspired lounge at Barry’s Downtown Prime at Circa Resort & Casino deserves a visit. Whether he’s showing us how to make Southern-style lobster hush puppies, Vietnamese pho or Boston clam chowder, Guy Fieri stresses one thing: No matter what region of the world the dish is from, it needs to be fun—and ridiculously full of flavor. As simplistic as that philosophy seems, it really is the secret to Fieri’s massive success, both across the globe and in Las Vegas, where his eponymous Vegas Kitchen & Bar is always hopping. The main dining room is the perfect place to enjoy a comfort food feast: Open air, full of light and punctuated by red brick. There’s also a large bar area where you can gather with friends and just enjoy a pint—or one of Fieri’s amazing signature cocktails, including the famous BBQ Bloody Mary, made with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, candied bacon, beef jerky and a veggie skewer, all flavored with house-made Bloody Mary mix (which includes Guy’s bourbon brown sugar barbecue sauce and Guy’s Buffalo Sauce). This is almost as much a meal as it is a drink! You’ll want to keep the party going with any number of sides. Flavor dominates every edge of this part of the menu, especially the andouille sausage-and-cheese-stuffed jalapeño poppers, wrapped in maple bacon, smoked and glazed with that aforementioned barbecue sauce. A house-made ranch dip really goes well with this! And for a real head-turned, order the Trash Can Nachos. Your dish arrives in a tall metal pitcher with a removable bottom. One pull of the trigger and the whole mess slides onto a plate. On the opposite side of the valley in Summerlin, beloved Italian restaurant Al Solito Posto (702.463.6781) at Tivoli Village recently unveiled new seasonal dishes from celebrated chef Steve Young, including roasted beet salad with whipped ricotta figs, casarecce pasta with fennel sausage and broccoli rabe, butternut squash risotto, a tender veal chop done Milanese style, and seafood cioppino with Maine lobster and other oceanic treasures. Al Solito Posto’s incredible bar, where you might luckily find yourself for dinner if you skipped a reservation, also has new seasonal cocktails ready for sampling, such as the Hocus Pocus with vodka and chai tea flavors, and the Il Capo, made with cocoa nib mezcal, brandy and amaro. And don’t skip dessert; the hot new bite is pumpkin cheesecake with spiced caramel white chocolate anglaise. How could you resist? Back on the boulevard, celebrity chef David Chang is introducing something fun at his meat and seafood eatery at The Palazzo, the fantastic Majordomo Meat & Fish (702.607.3060). The Early Doors Menu is designed for guests who are ready for a quicker, earlier supper, perhaps because there are many more stops ahead on your night out on the Las Vegas Strip. The three-course meal is available Sunday through Thursday and includes options such as an iceberg wedge with thick-cut bacon and marinated tomatoes, a wood-grilled prime New York strip steak with beef fat butter, miso-marinated Chilean seabass with bok choy and daikon, and a selection of sorbets to complete the experience. At Sahara Las Vegas, a historic Strip casino that has been steadily updating its dining portfolio in recent months, the newest entry is Philadelphia import Chickie’s & Pete’s (702.761.8070), one of the most well-regarded sports bars in the country. Your favorite gameday foods are here, from burgers and wings to pizza and cheesesteaks. But seafood is the specialty of the house here, running the gamut from fried Sicilian-style calamari to New England clam chowder, warm or chilled lobster rolls to steamed mussels, clams and oysters. This is one of the few restaurants on the Strip where you can order whole Dungeness crabs and go to town at your table. This week, Las Vegas gets back to its country western roots as the city welcomes the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo at UNLV’s Thomas and Mack Center, Dec. 2-11. As cowboys, cowgirls and fans of the rodeo celebrate all over town, there’s one property that should be on every NFR attendees’ radar—Golden Nugget. The resort hosts a slew of rodeo-related events, including a grand lineup of concerts with some of country music’s biggest stars. Jo Dee Messina kicks things off on Dec. 2. After releasing her first hit single, “Heads Carolina, Tails California,” in the late ’90s, the Massachusetts native earned two top-10 hits off her debut album and then continued to steadily climb the charts. By 2001, Messina earned another chart-topper, “Bring On the Rain,” a duet with Tim McGraw. With more than 16 top-40 songs, nine No. 1 hits and more than five million albums sold, the country crooner has built a reputation as a champion for female empowerment by creating her own record label and releasing her most personal album to date, 2014’s Me. It was one song that took country

artist John Michael Montgomery—who performs on Dec. 4—from known artist to national star. After parting ways from the duo Montgomery Gentry, the Kentucky native released his first solo single “Life’s a Dance,” in 1992 and then took an upwards trajectory with more than 30 hit singles on Billboard’s country charts and the recording of 10 studio albums. Mega hits like “I Love the Way You Love Me,” “I Swear,” “Be My Baby Tonight” and “I Can Love You Like That” all reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Legendary Las Vegas headliner Frank Marino has wrapped a two-year run as host of another long-running, beloved Strip production, Legends In Concert at the Tropicana Las Vegas. After starring in An Evening at La Cage and Divas Las Vegas for decades with his iconic performance as Joan Rivers, Marino stepped into the new role in the musical tribute show with grace and grit, but now he’s eyeing a different role—or several of them—for the next stage of his career. You were excited about joining forces with Legends in Concert two years ago, but didn’t it turn out to be a better fit than you imagined? That’s 100% right. I joined Legends in September 2019 and we were all stepping into unchartered territory. I owned my own show for so many years and then I became, for lack of a better term, an employee instead of a producer, so I was not sure if it would work. Would I be able to do things my own way? It ended up working out perfectly. It was like Cadillac buying Volvo and merging the two

together. It was the best decision I ever made because I live in the moment, I look forward to going to work every night, and I can concentrate on what I have to do and depend on myself. If it was so perfect, why leave? I’m working with a few different companies on some big projects and some TV stuff. I have so many irons in the fire. I’ve been doing a lot of TV documentaries and Vegas documentaries, and I’ve got people who want to do a reality show. So, I’m asking myself, do I want to do TV? Try acting? Go back onstage? Or do I want to retire? Honestly, I’d be OK to retire right now; I just want to make sure I close every door properly.

It sounds like the pandemic changed your perspective on your career. When I talked to you last summer, I remember saying I was going crazy, because I’d gone 38 years of driving to the Strip every night and I always had this pickme-up, this high (from performing) every day. COVID killed it. I was climbing the walls. My house was so clean, I only had the ceiling left to vacuum. I hated it. But four or five months in, I started to like being at home and not being stressed. I didn’t realize how stressed I was until I realized what it was to not be stressed. If we spoke like this three years ago, I’d say I’ll never retire, I’ll work until I’m dead. But the best position to be in is working because you like to work, not because you have to work, and that’s what’s happening now. You have a few more shows before Christmas, Divas at the Italian American Club on Dec. 3 and your

holiday drag brunch show at DW Bistro on Dec. 5. What comes after that? In January, I go on tour with Divas in Florida, and I have a few solo dates around the country, but in February, I gave myself the gift of making the calendar all white. Not a phone call, not a doctor’s appointment. For one month, I’m waking up and doing whatever I want to do. And whatever happens with all those projects will happen in March. Your book Drags to Riches came out last year. Could you see yourself doing more of that type of work in the future if you’re not onstage? I could. I’m working hard on becoming a great public speaker, and I love to go speak to gay and lesbian youth. I think it could be great to inspire others and talk about taking a vaudeville-style performance and making a multimillion-dollar business out of it, and to show younger people that they have the tools to be what they want to be.

Shania Twain brings renewed vigor to stage By Matt Kelemen

What does Shania Twain have in store for her return to headlining in Las Vegas at Planet Hollywood Resort? Will she enter Zappos Theater riding a horse at the opening of Let’s Go! The Vegas Residency? Will she pick a few fans to join her onstage and don skirts to dance a can-can to “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” during a Twain Town Saloon segment? Will she perform a Prince cover, or get in the holiday spirit with “White Christmas”? It’s been 25 years since Twain burst onto the charts with her sophomore album The Woman in Me, changing the course of crossover country with irresistible song hooks and her down-home glamour image. After a childhood characterized by constant struggle and a dud of a debut album, the singer found both professional and personal chemistry with producer Mutt Lange, whose studio wizardry powered AC/DC’s Highway to Hell and Def Leppard’s Pyromania. The meeting of musical souls would “Rock This Country,” as the title of the opening song from

her last slate of Let’s Go! shows in Las Vegas suggests. She scored her first hit single with “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” and became a mainstay on the charts for years after. Her 1997 album Come On Over spawned a succession of tracks that went into heavy rotation on radio, including “From This Moment On,” “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” and “You’re Still the One,” all of which were featured in her residency sets before the pandemic. The midriff-baring outfits she wore in her videos made her a sex symbol, but her resounding chart success made her a superstar, and a slew of Grammys cemented her permanent place in the country music firmament. Life would have more challenges in store for Twain after her success. Her marriage to Lange ended in a 2010 divorce, but a year later she wedded Frédéric Thiébaud, who she is still married to. Vocal hoarseness due to Lyme disease led to a different kind of struggle for Twain after first fearing she’d never sing again. “My

voice has changed,” she told People magazine last year. “I have more power when I’m singing now. I have more character, I find. I enjoy singing again.” (The shutdown gave her a chance to rest her vocal cords.) That’s saying a lot for someone who’s been a working singer since she was a child, performing in Ontario bars after midnight to supplement the family income. Now she has her own stage in Las Vegas that allows her to get to bed at a reasonable hour, and a deep song catalog to draw from. She’s weathered her share of criticism about combining country with pop hooks and videos that emphasize her alluring image, but she says the uplift she gets from fan support far outweighs the stings she’s received from detractors. Her fans inspire her and strengthen her singing, and to them she’s still the one.

Carlos Santana’s sweet, signature six-stringed sound once again filling the hallowed hall of House of Blues is a sure sign that things are getting back to normal in post-lockdown Las Vegas and the live music world in general. Santana put his pandemic time to good use, recording what would become his 26th studio album, Blessings and Miracles, from which a handful of standout tracks have been added to his career-spanning setlist at his HOB residency. His never-ending endeavor to coax timeless tones from his instrument is well represented on the recording, but it’s in a live setting that the musician truly becomes a conduit for metaphysical melodicism. For Santana, life is a search for The Universal Tone, as his 2015 autobiography is titled. It’s a path that began for him as a boy in Jalisco, Mexico, where his father gave young Carlos violin lessons before presenting him with

an electric guitar. After his 2019 album Africa Speaks, he was ready to create an album that reached people much as his 1999 comeback album Supernatural did. Rob Thomas, of Supernatural’s smash hit “Smooth,” is back in the fold to add vocals to “Move,” along with New York City rock band American Authors. Chris Stapleton, Diane Warren, Steve Winwood, Living Colour’s Corey Glover, siblings Salvador and Stella Santana as well as late jazz keyboardist Chick Corea, who passed away in February after a battle with cancer, are part of the star-studded personnel. Stapleton’s co-write, “Joy,” came about after Santana called Stapleton and had a “long conversation about the state of the state of the world,” as Stapleton reveals in a video on Santana’s YouTube channel about the making of Blessings. Santana’s idea was to write a song about the opposite of fear, which resulted in the reggae-tinged tune that Santana included in early-November HOB sets. “Nobody involved in Blessings and Miracles sounds as if they’re going through the motions,” writes Steve Erlewine in an Allmusic.com review. With Santana producing,

Warren collaboration “She’s Fire” features muscular guitar injected into a laid-back pop song with drum machines and G-Eazy giving the track trap music flavor. “Song for Cindy” is an instrumental ballad dedicated to the bandleader’s drummer and life partner Cindy Blackman Santana, and features the most expressive guitar playing on the album. Both songs have also been part of Santana’s recent sets, but one album highlight, a cover of Procol Harum’s “Whiter Shade of Pale” with Winwood on vocals, is likely only to make it if Winwood has a Vegas trip planned for the near future. The absence won’t be glaring as Santana plays classics that recently included “Soul Sacrifice,” “Jingo,” “Evil Ways,” “Black Magic Woman” and “Oyo Como Va,” as well as a cover of The Zombies’ “She’s Not There.” Santana’s inspiration shows no sign of slowing, fueled by a multigenerational fan base. “I’m 74, and somehow I’m still relevant,” he says later in the video. “It means if I play the right song at the right time, grandparents, parents, teenagers and children will go, ‘Play it again!’”

Singer, ventriloquist and comedian Terry Fator has always packed the maximum amount of fun into his Las Vegas headlining show, which relocated from The Mirage to New York-New York last year. No other Strip performance offers music, comedy and puppets. But Fator can barely contain his excitement surrounding the newest switchup, shifting into holiday mode for A Very Terry Christmas for performances through Jan. 1 at the intimate Liberty Loft. He’s turning the entire space into a winter wonderland and showcasing his favorite classic Christmas tunes—which, as it turns out, is most of them. Are you the type of person who’s ready for the holidays well before Thanksgiving, or the type who’s saying it’s too early for Christmas music once those songs hit the radio? I love the holidays and I already started listening to Christmas music (in November). I can’t get enough. I think a lot of that (fatigue) is because people put pressure on themselves during the holidays when it’s supposed to be about loving each other and being kind to each other. It’s easy to get sucked into the commercialism and the shopping and I don’t do that. I start my Christmas shopping for my wife and nieces and nephews in June.

You’ve launched your holiday version of the show at New York-New York and it seems like audiences are really ready for holiday entertainment since your show and many others couldn’t proceed as planned last year under pandemic restrictions. I think so. My show has always been a Christmas show but one thing we all learned over the last year is that people celebrate in different ways. So, the theme of the show this year is just how different people have different ways of celebrating the holidays, and I’m going to let my puppets tell us how they celebrate, in a humorous way. Do you have a favorite Christmas song that you love to perform? It’s all of them. There’s really not one I don’t love. I love “Blue Christmas” by Elvis. I also wrote “Christmas in Las Vegas” and that’s actually one of my favorites to perform, because I compiled a list of all the things Vegas is iconic for, and the things Christmas is iconic for, and put them together. The first line is, “The neon lights shine like Christmas night.” It has all those aspects mingled into a big band type of thing the Rat Pack might sing, and I open the show with that.

You moved your show from New York-New York’s larger theater into the Liberty Loft over the summer. What was that adjustment like, and what do you love about the new venue? That (larger) theater was always a temporary thing, they just wanted me to get started again and I was dying to get started. It was great, but once I found Liberty Loft, it’s really special. My wife Angie was an event planner before I met her and she has a really good eye, so she worked with the team to build out this beautiful room. It’s so intimate. When I walk out on that stage, I can just feel the energy from the crowd in a way I never could at larger venues. I’ve never been happier to perform five nights a week. As soon as I get on that stage, that energy hits me and it lifts me through the show.

It certainly seems like your fans feel more connected to the show in Las Vegas, and you’re still playing big theater venues when you hit the road. I play places ranging from 1,500 to 10,000, and when I go and do a one-off like that, it’s wonderful and it gives me a real charge. But the only to keep it fresh every night is if you’re feeling that energy. And to be able to change my Vegas show for the holidays, which I have such a passion for, it’s like a perfect storm of happiness.
