From the Editor That’s Entertainment!

When Las Vegas Magazine decided to create its Hall of Fame in 2019, it was a bit daunting picking the inaugural class. After all, our selections would set the tone for subsequent years. For those unfamiliar with our rules, it’s simple: To be eligible, honorees—from shows to restaurants, from nightclubs to properties—must be something you, the reader, can enjoy right here and now. As you can well imagine, the discussion on the first class got a bit heated and animated. But there were two selections that required no further discussion. Once their names were thrown into the ring, everyone just nodded in agreement. Those two selections were Carrot Top and David Copperfield. Both men have set the gold standard in their respective fields—comedy and magic—in Las Vegas, both have been here for years, and both continue to pack houses and draw rave reviews. The two men have one other thing in common: They’re both in this week’s issue! Writer Matt Kelemen touched base with Scott Thompson, aka Mr. Top, to talk about the entertainer’s 16th anniversary at Luxor, the evolution of his show, and much more (“Comedy Gold,” p. 30). Meanwhile, editor at large Brock Radke interviewed Copperfield to talk about his new book, what keeps him motivated nearly 20 years

into his run at MGM Grand, and his secret museum that is only available to see by exclusive invite (“Now Appearing,” p. 34). fancy soda water and citrus, and the Salty Dog, featuring Ketel One Botanical Rose and Grapefruit vodka, grapefruit and pink peppercorn. Then move over to “Vegas Sh*t,” which includes (obviously) options found only on the Las Vegas Strip. Choose from a dry-aged tomahawk, served with gochujang maître

d’hotel butter, or the grilled whole fish, served with jalapeño ponzu and garlic veggies. Watching Closely?

Magician’s sleight-of-hand will confound you Those who followed Shin Lim’s journey on America’s Got Talent (he not only won the regular competition, he came in first in the show’s Champions edition) know his story very well by now: He was training to be a classical pianist, but because of carpal tunnel syndrome, he had to choose between the piano and magic. Most who have had the pleasure of seeing him perform must believe he made the right decision. It’s a safe bet to say that Lim’s residency at The Mirage is one of the hottest on the Las Vegas Strip, and when you add AGT competitor and mentalist Colin Cloud into the mix, you have a show that just can’t miss. Lim and Cloud take turns entertaining the audience; there’s plenty of audience participation

when Cloud comes out, and he’s the perfect complement to Lim’s awe-inspiring magic, helping to keep the crowd laughing and loose. His is a different kind of magic than Lim, but it’s no less impressive. Whether he’s getting youngsters in the crowd to shout out random words or getting audience volunteers to think of their favorite celebrities, his improvisational skills are unmatched. No matter the situation, Cloud has a comeback. It’s a skill almost as impressive as his magic. But it’s Lim that truly steals the show, with lightning-fast sleight-of-hand. And he took advantage of the pandemic downtime to dig deeper into his own creativity and find bigger, bolder ways to stun his appreciative audiences. “Creating is fun and almost like a science project,” he

told Las Vegas Magazine in an interview earlier this year. “The entire show has changed. The storyline is a lot more personal and a lot more abstract as well.” Shin Lim’s performances are nothing short of art. In one segment, he performs to Sting’s “Shape of My Heart” while doing amazing things with the hearts in a deck of cards; in another, he tells the story of his attempt to win the FISM (Fédération Internationale des Sociétés Magiques) in 2015, and the illusion he used in that competition. It’s all spellbinding, seamless and constantly surprising. And the speed with which Shin Lim makes cards change (sometimes while in plastic bags) will make you rethink that whole blinking thing. –Las Vegas Magazine Staff

All the Classics Phil’s Steakhouse, a longtime favorite with both locals and tourists, resembles an old-school steakhouse, with plush seating and wood-accented everything— just super comfy. The Treasure Island stalwart serves up dishes like a huge 24-ounce bone-in ribeye chop, chicken marsala with mushroom sauce and thyme, and pan-fried branzino with caviar rice. But those aren’t the only standouts on the menu. It features so many classic steakhouse dishes, such as crab cake with an Old Bay aioli, oysters Rockefeller, jumbo shrimp cocktail, French onion soup with Gruyére cheese and Caesar salad with herb croutons. Entrées include filet mignon, strip steak and shrimp scampi—all your favorites. Steaks come with steamed asparagus and whipped or baked potato, and can be converted into surf and turf by adding crab legs, shrimp scampi, a 6-ounce lobster tail or a crabmeat béarnaise crust. Gonna Fly Now Have you ever fantasized about being a government operative or an action hero? Well, put on your spy shoes and jump on FLY LINQ Zipline for an adventure. Start near Las Vegas Boulevard from a tower that’s 12 stories up. You’ll reach speeds that approach 35 mph. Zoom over the heads of crowds of people, departing as silently as you arrived. There are height and weight requirements, of course. Laugh It Up If you’re looking for Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club after Nov. 26, then you’ll want to head up to the main level and angle over to the District. Brad Garrett’s new, 210-seat comedy club is right next to a sweet little lounge where patrons can grab a drink and listen to pianists, jazz musicians and horn players. “Though I will miss performing in the ‘basement’ and waking up guests who have fallen asleep on their way to self-parking, this is an opportunity I’m very grateful

for and excited to embark on,” said Garrett in a release. On Nov. 27-28, Brad Garrett presides over the opening and christens the new stage, as do Butch Bradley and Trixx. For the holiday weekend, catch shows on Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.; the club is closed from Nov. 21-26. Cantonese cuisine will fire up your senses When it opened, Hakkasan was one of the most buzzed-about names in Vegas, offering both a restaurant and a nightclub. If you’ve ever eaten there, you’ll understand why it had that buzz. The decor is elegant and invigorating, yet also lush and serene. Hakkasan’s cocktails are exceptional, and we’ve got the perfect selection to start off your dining experience. The Three Treasures features Cazadores Blanco tequila, guava, Thai basil, cassis and cold-pressed lime. I know, I know, there are more than three delicious ingredients there, but what can you do? The Scorched Melon is concocted with Olmeca Altos Plata tequila, rock melon, tamarind cold-pressed lime and Firewater bitters, with atomized mezcal. That mezcal lends

a deliciously smoky aroma, teasing your olfactory senses. You can also get an alcohol-free version of this called the Rock Melon Refresher. The Cantonese cuisine here includes many classics, but in a modern, elevated way. And the restaurant just updated its menu for fall, meaning even more delicacies are in store for lucky diners. Some items to consider for appetizers and dim sum (and yes, do share, and share your entrées, too!): The truffled beef tartare on a turnip cake with preserved egg; wild mushroom puff with a truffle aioli; and crispy duck salad, anointed with pomelo, shallots and pine nuts. For the main courses, General Tsao chicken cooks up crispy chicken breast with chili and sesame., soy-ginger glazed salmon, and

jasmine-smoked prime short rib comes with a pickled lotus root on the side (an acquired taste, so be careful with this one). And on the side, Hong Kong fried rice incorporates shrimp and pork along with asparagus, yellow chives and a wok-fried egg. For the vegans in the group, Hakkasan has a good range of items, each denoted on the menu, including a faux chicken. Yum! Do not skip desserts, as they are out of this world! The Spikey Lemon resembles a sort of lemon meringue pie, The Strawberry is a gorgeous, shiny ornament that’s all edible. Worthy of a Wow Although the One Steakhouse name may not have been totally familiar to you before you dine, we are betting you’ll remember it afterwards. Morton brothers David and Michael, of the Morton family of restaurateurs, opened the restaurant at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas in the same space as their MB Steakhouse, and they kept some of the steakhouse’s signature offerings. That includes the Tomahawk Feast, a 16-pound, dry-aged experience for up to 12 people— it has to be ordered at least 72 hours in advance and includes six side dishes. Now that is worthy of a wow. But there are other tasty beef presentations if you aren’t opting for the feast, like a 32-ounce ribeye or a 32-ounce double porterhouse; wagyu from Japan and the U.S.; filet mignon, ribeye and N.Y. strip from a variety of Midwest ranchers. Get surf with your turf with crab legs, Maine lobster or tiger shrimp, plus seafood creations like Alaskan king crab pasta with white miso butter, shrimp risotto and pan-roasted Alaskan halibut. And the ricotta gnocchi, although a side, could easily make it as an entrée. –Nina King

Limited-Time Decadence There’s no question about it: For one of the best burger experiences for those on the Strip and on the go, it doesn’t get better than Shake Shack, where everything is made exactly to order and fresh as you can get. Merry Medieval Christmas Holiday production starts season out right For the past several Christmastimes, the evil dragon wizard of Tournament of Kings has devised nefarious plans to disrupt feasting and festivities that would make the Grinch greener with envy. The forces of good prevailed, but Mordred swears he has a different plan during this year’s series of special seasonal shows, dubbed Tournament of Kings: ’Twas the Knight (begins Nov. 24). Will he draw on his esoteric knowledge of dark arts and fire to ruin the roast beast? Silence singing? Turn dreams of a white Christmas into nightmares? That citizenry who have dined in the great hall while watching the legend of Prince Christopher’s journey toward knighthood unfold as well as patrons of previous ’Twas the Knight shows

found a revision to the show in 2019. Antonio Restivo, who plays Mordred, took on an expanded role in the holiday show. And Restivo’s background in magic enables him to contribute to the creation of magic effects for Mordred’s archrival Merlin in ’Twas the Knight. “I’m always excited to do the holiday show,” says Restivo. “It’s kind of a break from the everyday show that we do, and it’s something special. I have to honestly say when Merlin does that big magic trick where he makes the whole arena fill up with snow, people tear up. It’s a beautiful scene and it’s really special to be a part of.” Merlin has been making it snow every season since 2015 when ’Twas the Knight debuted. This year he has some new tricks up his sleeve,

among other revisions to the production. Sparks still fly from clashing swords and knights on horseback charge at full gallop during jousts, but décor reflects the time of year. Revelers holding ribbons dance around a maypole, while a white horse makes merry during a dressage presentation. Guests at the round table burst into seasonal song. While Mordred remains malevolent for most of the year, ’Twas the Knight offers him a shot at redemption. “I don’t want to give it away, but there’s a part of the show where Mordred’s ‘Bah, humbug,’ Christmas Grinch side in him is sort of lifted,” says Restivo. Because even evil dragon wizards have no natural immunity to Christmas spirit. –Matt Kelemen

Tap Into Fun If you’re a KISS fan, consider KISS by Monster Mini Golf the mother ship. If you’re a fan of rock ’n’ roll, or even a fan of having a fun time, this is the spot for you, too. It’s lights out at the 18-hole indoor mini golf course, lit up from being soaked in glow-in-the-dark paint. Off the course, you’ll find a nice selection of arcade games, bar seating, VIP party rooms and a wedding chapel. What might take up hours, though, is checking out all of the KISS memorabilia that adorns the walls. One thing we know for sure about Piff the Magic Dragon: He loves food. And not those fair maidens who are in dire need of saving by brave knights, no. Piff loves sandwiches, bananas … just about any finger food he can get his hands on. He’s also constantly pitching things for sale (as if a dragon would ever need a financial assist by anyone)—when one of his signature illusions is over, there he is, offering the unsuspecting fan a souvenir … for a small fee. Yes, these are very un-dragon-like characteristics, but as you quickly discover, there’s no one quite like him. The acerbic Piff, aka John van der Put, dressed head to toe in a very unconvincing dragon costume, is rarely without his companion, Mr. Piffles, a Chihuahua who is about as chill as you’ve ever seen a canine; it often seems he’s just putting up with Piff, patiently waiting until he gets his next dragon treat. (Yes, he’s dressed up in a costume, too!) Don’t miss your chance to catch Piff while he’s here—seriously, you don’t want a dragon mad at you, especially a sarcastic one. –Ken Miller

This GM is winning at the game of life “I’ve played an insane amount of video games,” says Randall Kapuno. In fact, years ago, Kapuno even competed in tournaments at Luxor’s HyperX Esports Arena. And now, almost serendipitously, he’s the general manager there. “I realized I had a good formula for success: work hard, keep my head low, push, be passionate and be nice to people,” Capuno says. “I took that and turned it into a career I could see myself doing long term, and that was esports.” But before he joined HyperX, Capuno was using that formula to excel at other careers. Out of high school, he was the youngest employee to work for Apple at The Forum Shops at Caesars, and he’s owned and operated a successful Vegas boba truck. “But then I kind of got burned out with that and decided to change careers again,” he says. “So I did a complete 180 and went from owning a boba truck to an entry level position at HyperX, but I loved it. I remember being onstage was such a privilege

when I would compete, and now I get to walk on that stage every single day.” He joined the esports arena a couple of years ago and through grinding (a very gamer word for working hard) moved up the ladder quickly. “I think being efficient at what you do, working really hard and being a really good human being— all those things and tackling all the challenges that come with business, you can tell who is capable and ready for the next level, and I feel I presented myself properly when there was opportunity,” he says. As general manager, Capuno helps run operations and helps put together tournaments. “But what I really love is supporting my team, and I love providing a really good experience for guests. I understand what it’s like to be a true gamer, seeing people compete and whether they’re cheering or crap-talking—it’s such a powerful energy, and I love celebrating that. CARROT TOP may have transcended his status as a go-to pop-culture punching bag by virtue of career success and positive attitude, but he can still play an indirect role in other entertainers’ viral moments. Case in point: Kathy Griffin’s Oct. 20 topless Instagram post, which became a pre-Halloween meme due to her uncanny resemblance to Carrot Top when photographed from behind. Carrot Top tweeted his approval (“Brilliant!!”) and shot a parody clip, with a backyard pool substituting for Griffin’s view of the Pacific Ocean. “I was trending for three days regarding that,” says the comedian. “So, my guys were like, ‘Let’s make a video, make a joke about it back.’” Deflecting disrespect and going with the comic flow factor into Scott Thompson’s success as Carrot Top, prop comic extraordinaire. He’s currently observing his 16th year as a headliner at the Luxor, his 15th anniversary having taken place during the pandemic pause. While a nonstop barrage of visual jokes is his trademark, the stage show has evolved. “I had a friend last week who came and said, ‘I don’t think you should be called a prop comic anymore,” says Thompson. “There’s still props in the shows, but there’s a lot more storytelling—it’s hard to describe—or even stand-up.” The screen behind him that once showed the Carrot Top logo throughout the set is now used to complement his delivery with visual punchlines, often media-driven, for at least one-third to one-half of the show. One bit involves images from a Las Vegas Magazine shoot of Carrot Top in a Varvatos suit with his hair relaxed, his trademark curls straightened out. “Whenever we have a real windy day, I always come onstage and say, ‘What a beautiful day. Look at the beautiful weather,’ and they show a clip of me where they put like 10 leaf blowers on me outside. It’s fun. I’m trying to smoke a cigarette, and then it cuts to, ‘My hair was straight this morning,’ then I put those pictures that you did with the straight hair, and it kills. It always kills.” Thompson’s prop jokes are often topical and may remain in the set as long as they continue to get laughs. A giant, translucent, impenetrable cell phone case that prevents tweeting may show up whenever Donald Trump trends. A clip of Norm Macdonald chiding Carrot Top’s infamous foray into film, Chairman of the Board, on Late Night With Conan O’ Brien made it to the screen after Macdonald’s passing, transformed into a self-deprecating tribute. “There’s always props being built,” says Thompson. “There’s a shelf life, but I can always retool it and make it work.” Thompson experimented with facial hair during his time away from the stage and sported a Van Dyke beard at shows as October gave way to November. He’s still easy to spot at a distance, still wears eyeliner that’s really stage makeup he applies in the morning, before the red carpets, keeping things rock ’n’ roll. And he kills. He always kills.

(And add wine or a cocktail— that makes the whole experience even better.) Prices for meat and cheese boards vary greatly, from $7 up to $44 or more, so you are sure to find one that suits your fancy while you’re in Vegas. At Eataly in Park MGM, you’ve got plenty of options starting from $15 and up. At La Pizza & La Pasta, build your own board with either mozzarella classica, mozzarella di bufala or burrata, then add on meats like Ferrarini’s prosciutto di parma DOP or soppressata. The charcuterie board at Hearthstone at Red Rock Resort pairs a variety of meats and cheeses, fennel crisps, and fig and foie gras jam. Drizzle a little maple-bourbon honey over your bite and it might seem heavenly. (Plus this option is very reasonably priced, which makes it taste even better.) Italian restaurant Bottiglia at Green Valley Ranch has three sizes to choose from when you order the antipasti misti platter, at several price points. Nosh on marinated peppers, meats, cheeses and other goodies. And if you are around for happy hour, you’ll want to take advantage of the

ultra-affordable charcuterie board (more dollars for cocktails is what we say!). The chef will choose your meat and cheese, and accent with olives and grapes. Julian Serrano’s Lago at Bellagio has one of the most beautiful dining rooms around, and a lakeside view, perfect for gazing at while you indulge in an antipasto salumi platter, with prosciutto di Parma, porcetta, pistachio mortadella (sounds decadent, doesn’t it?), Parmigiano cheese and the crisp carta musica bread. For a relaxed bite, Libertine Social, the gastropub from chef Shawn McClain, provides a chill environment that’s perfect for hanging with friends. There are plenty of apps that work well in that scenario, from garlic hummus with balloon bread to prosciutto and Parm flatbread, but if you want a cheesy bite, just order the cheese board, which also come with prosciutto, marinated olives, herb flatbread and cheeses, of course.

David Copperfield explores field with new book By Brock Radke

After all these years, David Copperfield is still the biggest name in magic. But he’s not resting on laurels. He continues to astound in his live spectacular at MGM Grand, and the illustrious illusionist raised the stakes recently with the release of David Copperfield’s History of Magic, an epic account of the evolution of his art form showcasing the most influential and groundbreaking magicians and artifacts throughout time. Full of never-before-seen images and detailed stories, the book was inspired by Copperfield’s private museum in Las Vegas, known to only a few lucky souls as the International Museum and Library of the Conjuring Arts, holding more than 80,000 pieces of memorabilia collected over the course of his singular career.

Congratulations on the book! Was this project something you’d been developing for a long time? In a way. This museum has been almost 30 years of my life. It’s a secret museum, because of all the secrets involved, and people get to tour it by invitation only. So, the book is a way of allowing other people to see this amazing place and some of the highlights, with beautiful pictures. But the book itself

is only two or three years in the making because I was searching for another way to share this place. It’s a very rich history, and I’m really proud of it. You know more about magic than anyone, but was there anything that you learned or rediscovered while you were compiling the material for the book? I was more of a creator than a historian

for decades, inventing new magic, making giant objects disappear, walking through walls, traveling around the world trying to break the mold of what magic was. My current show at MGM is about dinosaurs and spaceships, aliens and time travel, things that don’t exist in any of these amazing volumes in the library here. My real effort in life was to move magic forward, and I didn’t look back. Then, 20 years ago, I acquired a collection of things just to kind of rescue it and keep it together, and I started learning about the stories of these magicians, and suddenly it was vibrant. Stories are very important to me. We learn from stories. We learn from our past. So, in the last 20 years, I’ve been looking back as well as looking forward, and it was very enjoyable to relearn all this stuff, and through the book, I found out some incredible things I didn’t know. Since reopening your show at MGM Grand, you’ve been back onstage for 15 performances every week. What’s the secret behind that incredible consistency? I take no days off during the weeks I work, then I take 10 separate weeks off during the year and it’s a great balance for me. I get to re-energize during those breaks, but while I’m here I like to work. I do three shows Saturdays and two shows every other day. But the audience is the reason I’m there. I enjoy them, I enjoy the experience, and if I wasn’t having a good time, I wouldn’t do it. It’s very rewarding. I’ve been doing meet-and-greets in a different way now where I’m doing a little command performance backstage, and I look forward to it. I get to do a piece of new material to test for that group backstage and it’s really fun, and they’re happy about it, too.

Choreography and music add to charm of iLuminate Even if you’re familiar with the iLuminate dance crew from its groundbreaking performances on America’s Got Talent, The Ellen Degeneres Show, The X Factor or Dancing With the Stars, you still have no idea what awaits you at the group’s new show at The STRAT Theater. iLuminate blends music, dance, illusion, technology and comedy into an awe-inspiring production performed in the dark; the artists and their customized LED suits with wireless lighting programs act as the performers and the stage. There are plenty of shows on the Las Vegas Strip with mind-bending visual effects, but none that create a singular system of choreographed movement lighting the way this one does. pop and rock hits from decades past as well as the most current tracks to top the charts, which makes sense considering the iLuminate posse has performed live with the likes of Christina Aguilera and the Black Eyed Peas. As a pure dance show, it doesn’t get any better than this. And then there’s the technology. iLuminate has essentially created its own universe where anything can happen onstage. Dancers can float and fly. They can frolic with a spooky electronic snake that has some impressive moves of its own. They can seamlessly transport themselves from a bumping Vegas nightclub to a vintage juke joint in just seconds. The lights on their outfits are performing their own choreography while the dancers do their thing, and those two separate but aligned events mix with the music to create something that must be seen to be believed. Just when you think the adventure is winding down, the house really gets rocking with a mega-mix of songs that have been stirring dance floors for generations; suddenly the entire theater is part of this party. The illuminated dancers jump off stage to celebrate with the person sitting next to you who can’t stay sitting down. You’ll leave this show ready to keep grooving—and wanting more. iLuminate is already making a big impact at The STRAT, a perfect complement to its other family-friendly shows and its popular rides and attractions atop the Skypod. In A Very Terry Christmas, traditions shine bright

Although you might think that Las Vegas’ transitory population during the holiday season would mean a lack of tradition, you would be wrong. There are plenty of events that both visitors and locals look forward to year after year, including A Very Terry Christmas, star ventriloquist Terry Fator’s annual holiday show. Fator, who moved from The Mirage to New York-New York earlier in the year, now plays in the Liberty Loft, a slightly smaller venue that lends a more intimate feel to the show; And that’s perfect for the holiday show, where Fator connects with his audience on a more personal level. “Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year, and I look forward to creating this unique show and spreading holiday cheer to audiences throughout the season,” Terry said in a recent release. What can you expect during his holiday shows?

Well, expect all of his favorite people (and our favorite cast) to stop by and visit, joining Fator in making merry. That means that Winston the Impersonating Turtle; Emma Taylor, the sweet girl with the incredible voice; our favorite gal-on-the-prowl Vikki The Cougar; Duggie Scott Walker, the neighbor we’ve heard is actually Vikki’s son; Maynard Tompkins, the Elvis impersonator; and soul singer Julius will all drop in to sing a variety of Christmas carols and songs with Fator. You might also see Fator’s real-life wife popping onstage; after all, the holidays are for family. You’ll also hear some songs that Fator wrote himself—and did you know that Fator has quite a voice when he’s not throwing it? That makes a lot of sense, since the musical talent he employs nightly was honed over 25 years of performances before he won season two of America’s Got Talent and began the long run in Las Vegas, including an 11-year

If you can’t make these special shows, come back for a regular show, where a combination of videos and Fator’s ability to sing more than one part at once will astound you. In Who’s the Dummy Now?, sidekick Winston may be the character you know best, but Maynard Thompkins’ inability to perform adequately as Elvis will crack you up. That humor is a key part of Fator’s show, too, as Vikki’s libido and Duggie’s smoking habits earn a few very funny comments. The soul stylings of Julius, “the greatest singer in the history of the Apollo Theater,” will make you swoon, and if you are lucky, Walter T. Airdale, Fator’s first dummy, will throw down a few country tunes (if he hasn’t been drinking). And for a little more fun, Fator always includes some audience interaction. A Very Terry Christmas runs throughout the season, starting Nov. 26 and continuing through Jan. 1, while Who’s the Dummy Now? resumes Jan. 16, after a well-earned vacation for Fator and the whole crew.

This summer, the company sold its most expensive home ever, Vegas Modern 001 (and the most expensive yet sold in Las Vegas as of press time). We talked recently to founder Tyler Jones about the company and building the home. Your family has been in Vegas for a really, really long time. But Blue Heron has only been

established since 2004. What was your impetus behind founding the company? I grew up with my father’s (home building) company … and ultimately went to architecture school at University of Colorado in Boulder. By the time I was 25, when we started up the company, I’d already had quite a bit of both construction and design experience. Blue Heron was a way to put it all together to come up with a process and a workflow for our clients and for

our team. It was more efficient, and was always about this ultra-strong architectural vision. A lot of Blue Heron architecture has a (particular) contemporary feel. Why does that type of style resonate with you? Our Vegas Modern design philosophy is all about being authentic to the culture and what people who live in Las Vegas in 2021 need and want in their homes. It’s also about what is

appropriate to build in the desert with modern technologies and modern abilities. It’s really kind of a common-sense approach, and it’s also beautiful. There are no rules to the type of design we do, which is very important to us because we like to push boundaries and (we’re) constantly evolving. The Vegas Modern 001 house recently sold; it is incredibly beautiful. What in that home were you most proud of? The cohesive nature of the design. You can really tell that it was done by the same team that had a perfectly aligned vision, and we didn’t compromise on any of that as we went all the way through a very complicated and expensive

and difficult design and build process. That takes an incredibly talented team, and it takes a special structure from a company standpoint, to be able to orchestrate a large group of professionals coming from different disciplines. It was the most expensive house sold in Las Vegas yet. What do you think contributed to its quick sale? Well, I had the opportunity to meet with the buyer personally. And he recognized that this was really a masterpiece, and what the Blue Heron team did in Vegas Modern 001 is not otherwise available in Las Vegas. There’s nothing else out there that’s been designed to that same level and executed to that same level.

Thinking about Las Vegas’ future and home building, where do you think it’s going? I just don’t think there’s a limit to what could happen in Las Vegas. As a city, we’re still in our infancy. I think technology moves very quickly these days. So what’s possible in terms of how you design and build homes changes month to month. That’s very exciting for us because we like to stay at the very cutting edge of construction science and design. And the modern lifestyle is evolving faster than ever. Part of the fun of what we do is to continuously adapt and evolve to meet those needs. We’re just getting started on Vegas Modern 002 right now. That’ll be our next step (and) it’s kind of our research and development. –Nina King
