From the Editor A Rich History

Odds are many of you looking through the pages of this magazine know a thing or two about Las Vegas’ entertainment scene. After all, we are often referred to as the Entertainment Capital of the World. Our rich history of legendary performers—Liberace, Siegfried & Roy, Wayne Newton, the Rat Pack and so many more—is still one of our best advertising campaigns; you don’t need to have ever seen Elvis perform here to get a sense of how big an impact he had. Every performer who sets foot on a Las Vegas stage owes those who came before a great debt. And conversely, those who’ve come since have only enriched and strengthened our reputation for worldclass shows. This issue is a reminder of just how much you have to choose from in buying your next ticket. Our cover story, Magic Mike Live Las Vegas (“Dance Life,” p. 30), features an interview with one of the show’s dancers, JD Rainey, who provides a bit of insight on what it means to have crowds get enthusiastic during a show (Hint: It means a lot). There’s also a terrific interview by writer Matt Kelemen with Mac King, a comedy magician who recently switched properties following the pandemic shutdown (“It’s Good to Be Mac King,” p. 34). As you’ll discover, King couldn’t wait to get back to

work—and his audiences couldn’t wait to see him again. King’s greatest supporters include Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller; see him for yourself and you’ll get it. Oh, and you’ll laugh—a lot. Reality star’s aesthetic shines through in high-end lounge One could say that Vanderpump Cocktail Garden is an extension of the fabulosity that is reality star Lisa Vanderpump. For those not familiar with that name, just look up the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills franchise or Vanderpump Rules and you’ll get to know this huge personality. What some might not know, though, is Lisa and her husband Ken have spent more than three decades running successful bars and restaurants, with a large portfolio of L.A. establishments. So, when the power couple decided to expand to Las Vegas, the lounge was not just based off their reality TV star power, but their bona fide understanding of what elements make for a successful bar and lounge.

And you’ll see all these touches from the venue to the menus. Stepping inside is like stepping inside to be outside. To explain: the venue—let’s call it garden chic—is set up like a secret outdoor oasis with lush foliage surrounding the space, trees with branches filled with twinkling lights and comfortable nooks set up for a cozy date or intimate evening with a group of friends. The cocktail menu is packed with creative recipes with clever names like the Matcha Matcha Man, a blend of the Vanderpumps’ line of vodka, matcha, fresh mint, lemon, ginger liqueur and aquafaba. The Checkmate Bitch is mixed with Stoli Hot vodka, Chacho jalapeño aguardiente, fresh pineapple, grapefruit liqueur, vanilla citrus

and Angostura bitters. The Vanderpump sangria is made with the family’s own line of red or pink wine and served with fresh berries. For those that need a light nosh, Vanderpump Cocktail Garden offers small-plate selections like goat cheese balls, mini beef sliders, Manchego stuffed bacon-wrapped dates and the utterly delicious Rosé Cake for Two. This beautiful presentation is a small rosé-infused sponge cake covered in strawberry buttercream, and, dare I say, one of my favorite desserts on the Strip. And fans can look forward to the reality star’s second Las Vegas bar and lounge, Vanderpump á Paris, opening this winter at Paris hotel and casino. –Kiko Miyasato

Larger Than Life Over-the-top magic meets rock show at Criss Angel MINDFREAK, a true showcase for the illusionist known to millions of fans from both television and from his Las Vegas shows, including his Cirque du Soleil collaboration, Criss Angel Believe. Angel’s illusions are larger than life, high-tech marvels that he marries with rock music for a show unlike any other. One minute, Angel becomes a character from a video game; the next, he achieves weight-

lessness. The show can also take a darkly twisted turn, as when Angel saws a woman in half (complete with gore and a seriously twisted sense of the macabre). But it’s not all seriousness. Jen: So, Kristin and I had been friends for, I don’t know, five years... she had her son first. ... I called her one time when Finn was about 6 weeks old—and I was like, “I just miss you and I want to hang out, and can you please come over?” And the tires squealed, and she was at my house. Because she needed that, and not just like straight mom all the time. Kristin: ... We were having wine one night and ... we’re laughing over the terrible part of motherhood and she said, “You know, how can we show the real thing? This is the real part of it.” And she’s like, “Maybe we should shoot a video.” ... We did our first video and we tried to be very happy. But instead, we were both feeling very terrible because she had been up all night nursing and I had a terrible period, and we were introducing our kids’ names. Jen forgot her daughter’s name. And it was lightning in a bottle. We both realized because I laughed so hard, I peed through my pants. How did having a child change your comedy bit? Jen:. #imomsohard is like—being a mom is a verb. It’s not just, you know, your title. It’s also like, you can’t not be doing it. So, like, a woman who’s a brain surgeon, still is thinking about her kid’s softball game coming up. There’s no escaping mom and you’re just doing it all the time ... Kristin: ... What we were very surprised about and also delighted to see is like, not only did (fans) like what we were talking about ... They loved our friendship.

Jen Smedley and Kristin Hensley are both friends and the creators of #imomsohard, producing videos and snippets on the challenges that normal women face. The pair have branched off from that, bringing their voice to books (their first

children’s book was released earlier this year), releasing their own wine, and doing comedy onstage. They appear Nov. 20 at Green Valley Ranch, the last stop in The Getaway Tour, and chatted with Las Vegas Magazine recently. When did you get this idea to start #imomsohard?

How does the live show differ from videos? Kristin: It’s so much more rowdy like, this is a night out for you and your girls. And we don’t talk about the kids, not much. We talk about being a woman, we talk about what it’s like to be married. We talk about sex after marriage. We talk about hot guys, and wanting to do it and not wanting to do it ... Jen always says it’s a monster truck show for women, and I think for moms, and I think that’s accurate. This is R-rated. It’s we’re not going to give you advice or try to make you feel inspired; we’re there to be part of a party and make you laugh your ass off. Before Their Time If 27—A Musical Adventure was an actual rock concert today, tickets would sell out in minutes. Of course, gathering this roster of rock stars is only a dream, but 27 has made it reality—in a way. This high-energy tribute show brings together iconic singers—who all passed away at age 27—for an evening of nostalgia and music. Each tribute artist not only sings live, backed by a live band, but also brings back the looks, mannerisms and magnetism of the icon they play. The lineup includes Robert Johnson, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse. You’ll hear each of the singer’s biggest hits as well as learn a little bit about their lives. Fashion Forward Perhaps the most popular toy in history has her own homage. Barbie: A Cultural Icon features not only more than 150 vintage dolls, but also interviews from some of the designers responsible for the many different incarnations. “Barbie has an amazing and inspiring history,” said Tim Clothier, the CEO of Illusion Projects Inc., which partnered with toymaker Mattel to produce the exhibit. “There is a real sense of nostalgia when you see what was happening in the world,

and in Barbie’s world, when you were a kid—and then follow the story to how she’s impacting our world today.” For Barbie fans, the holy grail might be the display with the very first doll that Mattel produced in 1959. The first Barbie Dreamhouse is here as well. Titans Collide It’s an international sensation, and this week Impact Wrestling arrives in all its thunder and glory to Sam’s Town for three action-packed days. From Nov. 20-22, fans can watch some of their favorite stars fly through the air, suplex and body slam their way to victory, stars like Moose (former NFL star Quinn Ojinnaka), who will defend his world championship title against Eddie Edwards. “I quit football because it wasn’t my passion,” said Moose in a statement. “Pro wrestling is what I was born to do—and no one will take this title from me.” Other marquee matchups at this year’s event include: former WWE and current Knockouts champion Mickie James vs. Madison Rayne; and Las Vegan Chris Bey, teaming up with 7-foot Hikuleo to challenge world tag team champions The Good Brothers. Also expect appearances from superstars like Violent By Design, W. Morrissey, Rich Swann, and Heath and Rhino. A Classic Constant It doesn’t get more classic Las Vegas than The Steakhouse at Circus Circus. Nearly four decades of slinging steaks, the sounds of Sinatra, cozy booths and a classic lemon drop martini (on the menu since day one) have become the staples of this lauded dining institution. Another special thing about the steakhouse is the grill in the center of the dining room, where chefs cook up cuts of meat over the mesquite firewood. It’s a very unusual thing on the Strip.

The menu has remained pretty much the same since opening: Guests choose their cut of meat and then get a side of fresh veggies and a choice of black bean soup or salad for the appetizer and mashed or garlic potatoes or wild rice for a side. The Great Escape It’s a nice respite from the buzz of the Las Vegas Strip, and it’s an attraction that many might not know about, but everyone really should. The Wildlife Habitat can be found on the Flamingo’s 4-acre tropical grounds, and is free for guests to stroll, stop and take a break and take in the beauty of nature and its inhabitants. Get the Highest Score

Indoor raceway has adrenaline thrills to spare When you first get into the state-of-the-art go-karts at Pole Position Raceway, it’s a bit … disappointing. You have no control of the speed of your vehicle for the first few seconds, as all racers are led onto the track on automatic pilot. But just as quickly as you’re wondering, “Is this as fast as it gets?” the autopilot is turned off, and … well, let’s just say you’re bound to be saying something to the effect of, “Holy poop!” (This is a family magazine, folks.) Suddenly you’re hitting speeds of up to 45 mph on the track’s straightaway, always wondering if you want to bother hitting the brakes at all. But of course,

you always do, because—and this is the very heart of the experience—you want to get the best time and leave everyone in the dust. For those racers out there who think they’re going to get away with dirty pool, be warned: If you do anything to affect your fellow racers (turn their car around, crash into one of the guard rails set up around the track, etc.), everything comes to a screeching halt, including your go-kart. It’s a gentle reminder that the top scores at Pole Position Raceway are earned, not taken by force. Odds are you’ll want to spend most of your time here getting the top track time, but you’ll

want to set aside some time to experience Pole Position’s latest addition, Omni Arena by Virtuix, a virtual reality experience contained in a built-in staging area. Its 360-degree motion platforms make you feel like you’re actually a pirate in Blackbeard, a zombie hunter in VRZ, or a military badass in Elite Force. Safety measures require that all participants book a trip, as only 20 people are allowed inside the 60,000-square-foot building every half hour. (Walk-ins are accepted only within the maximum number of racers per every half-hour time slot.) Happy racing! –Ken Miller

Gather the Family The atmosphere is warm and welcoming at Buddy V’s Ristorante, and your servers are so friendly you’ll want to adopt them. To start, we recommend specialty cocktail The Cake Boss, with Pinnacle Cake vodka, Chocolat Royal liqueur and Baileys Irish Cream. We don’t often recommend a specific salad at most restaurants, but we make a huge exception for the Toscano, maybe our favorite on the entire Strip. It’s just perfect, with prosciutto, roasted tomatoes and artichokes on a bed of baby arugula, drizzled with lemon vinaigrette and pecorino Romano. As you’d expect from an Italian restaurant, your choices here include everything from Mediterranean sea bass and chicken Parm to the Boss XL veal Parm chop. But if you want the true Buddy V experience, you’ll want to order the Valastro Sunday Gravy. It’s a monster of a bowl, piling meatballs, sausage, lamb and pork on a delicious mound of rigatoni. Let Yourself Go So you think you’re brave, do you? Well, test yourself on SkyJump Las Vegas, where you jump off the top of The STRAT, from 855 feet up. Like a skydiver, you’ll leap out into the air, strapped into a harness, descending at speeds approaching 40 mph. You’ll fall past the Top of the World restaurant and 107 SkyLounge, and may startle a few folks there as you plummet past. But never fear—you will be slowed down before you land, and there are guide wires which help keep you on course. With a wide range of beers, stadium-style bites and nearly 30 high-def televisions, it’s the perfect spot to relax and watch a game. The beer menu offers more than 50 brews. A crisp and refreshing Corona with a lime wedge might satisfy you, but if you’re

looking for something bolder, go for the New Holland Dragon’s Milk bourbon barrel stout. Meet a lead bartender with a lot of heart It was 2001 and Lewis Caputa, who was in ad sales, decided to change careers completely. A friend suggested to him that he’d make a good bartender, and she knew of a property in Las Vegas that was hiring. “So I flew out for the interview,” says the California native. “And during the interview the guy said, ‘You don’t really have a lot of knowledge or experience bartending. Why should I hire you?’ and I said, ‘I’ll never call in late and I’ll never let you down.’ And he said, ‘When do you want to start?’” He moved to Las Vegas soon after, joining Sunset Station as a barback. About a year later, he became a bartender and worked at the property for 12 years. While working there, he picked up some part time work at The Venetian, joining the property in 2005. Today, you can find him working full time as lead bartender at Rosina Cocktail Lounge at sister property The Palazzo. “I’m the kind of bartender that empaths with all kinds of guests,” Caputa says. “I know how

to read guests. You need to have the skill as a bartender to, yes, generate revenue, but you become a bartender because bartending is fun. And if you don’t become a bartender to have fun, why are you doing it? Even at the age of 53, I like bartending the same as when I first moved here and became one, if not more.” After spending nearly two decades in a career that he took a chance on, what does Caputa think about when he reflects on his life? “No one in Vegas is luckier than me,” he says. “I nailed it. I swung as hard as I could and hit it farther than anybody. All you want to do as a bartender is give a guest an experience. There’s plenty of bars in Las Vegas, plenty. So at the end of the day when guests get on that plane and leave, I want to be one of the reasons that they want to come back. When people go home, they’ll remember me. The aptly named ameriCAN features 75 U.S. beers. A patriotic theme is prevalent, with several U.S. flags (one made out of license plates). There are a dozen Vegas brews, including Astronomy Golden Ale and Bad Beat Bluffing Isn’t Weise. Bar manager Robert Wilk said, “Local beer is

always a go-to; I tell customers, ‘You’re in Vegas, try something new.’” The award for the largest selection goes to Yard House; its 180-tap selection qualifies as the largest on the Strip. Ask for the local beer menu, which lists 20 from eight breweries, including Banger Morning Joe Coffee Kolsch, Hop Nuts Golden Knight Strong Ale and HUDL Super Mini Pale Lager. There are a lot of gorgeous interiors in Las Vegas restaurants, but one of the most striking has to be NoMad Library in Park MGM. The quiet walk to the restaurant exudes luxury, and the plush entrance to the restaurant opens up to a dining room

lined on all sides by books. It’s a décor trend that has gained prominence in the last few years, and it’s something NoMad has perfected. Cozy banquettes nestle against the wall, and cushy booths dominate the center of the room. There are so many volumes on the shelves that one almost expects to see a library ladder sliding by during dinner. NoMad is known for its killer cocktail list, but it changes often, so you’ll want to get the most current list for your starting cocktail, but hope it includes The Pink Lady, with gin, apricot liqueur, apple brandy and grenadine. You will be satisfied, no matter your choice. The appetizers here write a story all their own, with options for two or more diners, like the Fruits de Mer, with a selection of seafood to tease your appetite. And get back into the classics with a wedge salad—the blue cheese dressing is amped up a little with miso. A perfect entrée for the season is tagliatelle or risotto with truffle butter, Parmesan and white truffles; it’s earthy and delightful. You can also choose Chilean sea bass with poached mussels; branzino with grilled baby leeks; a veal chop with fall greens chimichurri; or filet mignon. Suckling pig is served with Seckel pears, mustard and bacon jam. NoMad is known, however, for its signature dishes for two: the roast chicken, decadently stuffed with foie gras, black truffles and brioche; and the American wagyu prime rib, which is rubbed

This is sliced thinly and stuffed with Gruyère cheese and black truffles. For potato fans, it’s magnificent. Honeynut squash is an autumn dish that warms the belly, and lemon ricotta is so delicate. The Ridiculous Mac & Cheese is so named for its over-the-top ingredients of lobster and black truffle—it’s not a kid’s dish here. Close the book on dessert with The Sundae, a presentation of ice cream, served with several delicate toppings that are as pretty as they are delicious.

It’s also incredible to see everything from the beloved Top of the World (702.380.7711) restaurant at The STRAT, but while this destination is known for those views from above, the cuisine is always changing and improving. Its new fall and winter menu focuses on the flavors of the season, with dishes including roasted beet salad in brown sugar vinaigrette, braised lamb shoulder with cumin-scented yogurt, cauliflower au gratin layered with smoked gouda cream and Parmesan breadcrumbs, and Harris Ranch filet mignon with optional stuffed roasted lobster or butter-poached king crab. For slightly more casual cuisine with soulful flair, dip into Yardbird Southern Table & Bar (702.297.6541) at The Venetian. The fabulous fried chicken is the foundation of this Southern-influenced hot spot, but other must-eats include oysters casino with andouille sausage and cornbread, truffle agnolotti topped with lemon ricotta, grilled and blackened salmon with basil pesto, and shrimp and grits that gets a kick from roasted tomato and Virginia ham. This bird has plenty of delicious tricks up its sleeve. Neighborhood restaurants in Las Vegas are equally adept at fall foods. Spring Mountain Road’s acclaimed Sparrow + Wolf (702.790.2147) recently appointed up-andcomer Travis Schultz as its new executive chef, and his collaborations with chef/owner Brian Howard have yielded new dishes such as oxtail hummus with crispy chickpeas and curry oil, coal-fired Spanish octopus with chili-garlic crunch, and black pepper and honey pork served with foie gras and plantains. In Summerlin, Hearthstone Kitchen & Cellar (702.797.7344) has it all right in the restaurant’s name; this is the place to gather with friends, get comfortable, and feast on oysters, pasta, steak and more. Among the most popular selections on this rustic yet refined menu are prime rib French dip, braised short rib and Calabrian chili pizza, and rotisserie chicken with arugula salad. And in the scenic southwestern neighborhood of Mountain’s Edge, Italian spot Locale (702.330.0404) is bringing in locals and Vegas visitors for celebratory family meals to preempt the holidays. It had its own circuit and had stars within that circuit, wellknown dancers and teams that had the reputation of being the best. People who were into this dance style

knew about these stars, but if you’re not into the culture, you’re oblivious to it. But we got to travel and had sponsors and promoters that paid for it all just so we could compete, and that was our existence from when we were 17 into our mid 20s. We made a name for ourselves and did some monumental things in this subculture that led to more mainstream stuff. What was your first impression of Magic Mike Live, and how did this job come together?

Magician’s comedy-magic act sparkles at Excalibur

MAC KING WASN’T SURE HE WAS PLAYING WITH A FULL DECK when he returned to the stage after the Strip’s pandemic pause. It had been awhile since he had a stage to fish for goldfish from or make Fig Newtons appear from various openings in his trademark plaid suits. King charted a new course for his career with a residency at Excalibur after social distancing put a damper on practicing his brand of comedy-magic before live audiences. Prior to 2020, King says the longest he had stayed away from the stage since he was 10 years old was probably three weeks. His return to live magic on a stage more intimate than at his previous long-running residency at Harrah’s was accompanied by some apprehension, but he had reinforcements helping him out. “The first few days, I had my family there with notepads helping me remember what I forgot,” says King on a Tuesday morning that coincides with his 36th wedding anniversary. “It was like a whole new show.” The pressure was on. His daytime shows precede kidtastic spectacle Tournament of Kings, heightening his profile among audiences with an appetite for fantasy and illusion, and adding value to Excalibur as a family-friendly destination. Luckily, his sleight-of-hand muscle memory was quickly reinvigorated. “It was a couple of weeks before I felt back in the saddle in that regard,” says King, who made use of pandemic time appearing on podcasts and filming YouTube series Don’t Everybody Leave with magician buddies such as Jeff McBride, Jacob Jax, Jason England, Nick Diffatte, Vinny Grosso and Michael Goudeau. He also made how-to videos with daughter Eli that explain how to turn water into ice cubes with magic freezing breath, and how to pop popcorn with a cell phone’s flashlight. King isn’t afraid to give a few secrets away but attempting to figure out how he makes his head disappear during a hiccup cure or how cards chosen by participants emerge from his suit pockets is a recipe for frustration. Ah, yes. The plaid suits. There is a history. King’s buddy Lance Burton introduced him to Los Angeles designer margaretrose, who created custom clothing for Elvis Presley during that King’s Vegas period and knew a thing or two about tailoring for magicians. The suits complement King’s folksy, approachable image, but his magic is no kids’ stuff. If his grandfathers’ interest in magic was genetically destined to skip a generation, King may very well have inherited a chromosomal fate of using illusions to earn a living. His shows are like a live magic version of The Simpsons, with kid jokes alternating with adult innuendos as King expertly misdirects the attention of children of all ages. Guinea pigs and goldfish appear and disappear, and King has a Cloak of Invisibility that fools everyone and no one at the same time. It’s good to be Mac King again.

Created by Corner Bar Management founder Ryan Doherty, this 5,000-squarefoot reimagined museum hosts various exhibitions like the current Cluster, an installation by Playmodes Studio that transports guests into an audio-visual voyage through technology and wonder. The completely immersive, 360-degree world will trick your visual and auditory senses and have you wondering which way is up and which is down. The installation marries different technologies to create astonishing effects while evoking emotion.
