From the Editor The Next Big Step

I’ve made no bones about it in the past: I’m an America’s Got Talent geek. I’ve been watching since very early on (back when there were only three judges!), and not just because the NBC reality competition is wildly entertaining; it’s a look into the future of Las Vegas entertainment. After all, even those who have not won the million dollars on the show (and a headlining show in Las Vegas) have found a home here. It’s not an exaggeration to say Las Vegas’ entertainment scene owes AGT a great debt. And if you’re a fan like me, you’re going to be very excited you visited this week. AGT launched its first extended residency this week, a variety show that mirrors the show itself, featuring both former winners and runners-up. America’s Got Talent Las Vegas Live at Luxor (“A Winning Show,” p. 30) promises to be a huge hit here, a wonderful complement to the AGT performers who now populate the Las Vegas Strip. But that’s just the beginning of the entertainment we’ve featured in this issue of Las Vegas Magazine. Check out our coverage of shows like Penn & Teller at Rio (“Mondo Magic,” p. 49), one of the longest-running magic residencies in town; Atomic Saloon Show at The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian and Palazzo (“Yee-Haw!” p. 32), a production from the folks who brought you the classic

with products like “Gom” (instead of gum), “Tomato Milk” (actually a phone charger) and green-and-white candy called “Leprechaun Kidneys.” But do some exploring, and soon you’re in an otherworldly dimension full of interactive experiences and cryptic clues.

What does it all mean? To help you figure it out, hit Omega Mart’s bar, where you can enjoy libations like the Meowjito, Omegarita and Happle Juice, the latter made with vodka, Chareau aloe liqueur, apple liqueur, apple blossom bitters and citrus. –Ken Miller

Any starter you pick will make you smile, including the crab cakes smothered with Cajun remoulade, the lobster chowder jampacked with applewood bacon, corn and Yukon gold potatoes, and the French onion soup, covered with Swiss, Gruyère and Parmigiano-Reggiano. You’ll even find shrimp tempura. Hank’s has any cut of steak you want—filet mignon, bone-in-filet, Kansas City strip, T-bone, ribeye. There’s also American bison and melt-inyour mouth Kobe carpaccio. Of course, you can

go in a different direction and be just as satisfied with the buttermilk fried chicken, Niman Ranch lamb chops and veal chop. Seafood fans will definitely want to try the Dover sole, served with Meuniere or oreganata, the Alaskan halibut or the Faroe Islands salmon. No matter your entrée, don’t forget classic sides like asparagus, mac & cheese and grilled tomatoes. One more note: For a limited time, Hank’s is serving stone crab. Having a Ball Millions of football fans know and love Terry Bradshaw from his pregame antics on Sunday mornings, and he carries that same infectious spirit into his show on the Strip, The Terry Bradshaw Show. It’s a combination of songs and storytelling, with an audience Q&A. Over 70 incredibly entertaining minutes, Bradshaw, with the help of a live band and backup singers Anne Martinez and Lorena Peril (who both also perform in Fantasy on the same stage), makes it clear that football is only one of his loves. At his heart, he wants to entertain people. So yes, you’ll get lots of football stories, and yes, you’ll hear a lot about how football was better in the “good old days.” But you’ll also hear a singing voice that has delivered a Billboard hit in 1976 with “Lonesome.” Bradshaw clearly loves country, but he also belts out some great blues and Everly Brothers classics. The Q&A is reason enough to buy a ticket; Bradshaw is very quick on his feet, and ready to take any question that comes his way. Paris landmark is a fine destination for dinner For a real taste of France in the U.S., make dinner reservations at Eiffel Tower Restaurant. Venerated chef Jean Joho has designed a menu that will give Vegas diners a meal they’ll return for again and again. Start with drinks—you’ll never go wrong with a mule, and the raspberry mule here is fresh and light with vodka, raspberry liqueur, ginger beer and lime. And the long wine list will give you plenty of options for vino with every course. Before your main course, indulge in decadent, slow-braised, smoked pork belly; sautéed N.Y. foie gras; or fricassee of escargot with herb gnocchi; and a potato leek purée (because it is

a French restaurant; you know you want to try escargot). And the grand seafood platter brings lobster, shrimp, crab, oysters and clams to the table. If you’re a seafood lover, this is for you. A creamy French onion soup is made with braised oxtail with Parmesan croutons. There are plenty of entrée options for you, too, from the slow-roasted filet of salmon in a pinot noir sauce to the Rossini-style filet with foie gras. The broiled beef tenderloin filet mignon is also served in two sizes, “The King” and “The Queen,” in case you are extra-hungry. Go ahead and add on a caviar tasting if you are so inclined. Beef Wellington is quite popular. If you are more

in a poultry mood, order the roasted chicken with parsnips and stone-cracked corn. And for dessert, enjoy a selection of macaroons or classic crème brulée. To get the full French experience, order a souffle, which the restaurant specializes in. There are four to choose from—Valrhona chocolate, classic Grand Marnier, Sicilian pistachio or apple crumble. The chocolate souffle is also available on the threecourse brunch menu (Saturday and Sundays starting at 10 a.m.). Light Up Your Night Spread over 4,000 square feet, Montecristo Cigar Bar welcomes all to kick back and enjoy its different seating areas. That’s Italian! At Rao’s, you’ll find that special ambience and all the flavors of the New York original. However, you’ll also find a lot more room, as the Vegas version has several dining areas. (One is a replica of the N.Y. one.) Try antipasti like fried green tomato caprese with buffalo mozzarella, a real treat for vegetarians, or the traditional pork, veal and beef meatballs in marinara. You can get other signature Rao’s dishes, too, like Uncle Vincent’s lemon chicken, a broiled

chicken with a tangy sauce. The beggar purses filled with pear and ricotta in brown butter and sage sauce get rave reviews, as do all the pasta dishes. Sail Away When The Venetian was built, its planners knew right away one element they could not do without: A replica of the Grand Canal in Venice. After all, without it, how would they replicate the gondola ride? It’s arguably the most iconic, romantic experience one can enjoy as part of a trip to Italy. So it would have been sacrilege to not replicate it in Las Vegas. And very romantic it is! It’s still one of the most popular attractions in Las Vegas after more than 20 years.

Mark Childers

All roads led to success in Las Vegas It’s all a matter of timing and fate. When he turned 21 years old, Mark Childers got a second job as a barback to earn some extra money. One night while on the job at the Charlotte, N.C., sports bar he worked at, he was sort of thrown into the bartender position. He’s never looked back. He worked as a bartender and manager in Charlotte for about a decade, then in 2014 he sent his resume to Tao Group for a position he thought was in New York. “As fate would have it, it was actually for a job at Lavo in Las Vegas,” he says. “So I got the chance to actually move out to the city that I had fallen in love with long ago.” Early on in his career, Childers visited Vegas many times. “I saw the mecca and I saw it right as I was getting into the industry, so I always had a love for Las Vegas,” he says. Childers moved here for the job at Lavo at The Palazzo, where he spent five years. Today, you can find him at Kassi Beach House at Virgin

Hotels Las Vegas, where he helps run the joint as the assistant general manager. “Kassi—it’s like experiencing a beach house party on the Mediterranean coast,” Childers says. “Beach house vibes with great Italian cuisine.” As one of the managers, Childers says, jokingly, “My job is to make the GM look good. But seriously, it’s about meeting new people and taking care of them. I know that sounds cliché, but if you don’t enjoy people, you’re in the wrong industry. “To be a good manager you have to be patient, self-driven, self-motivated,” he added. “My biggest fear is succumbing to mediocrity. You must have that drive, that passion, that competitive spirit and be better than you were the day before. That fuses with my love and passion for the hospitality industry that has made it a symbiotic relationship. I’m a big believer that if you love what you do, then you never work a day in your life.” –Kiko Miyasato

A Spirited Adventure

Tour a distillery made of fantastic worlds Simply put, it’s one of the coolest things I’ve experienced in Las Vegas. That’s the easiest explanation. But to really know what Lost Spirits Distillery at Area15 is, one really needs to go and experience it for themselves. Until then, here’s a sneak peek of what you’ll encounter. Lost Spirits Distillery’s main function is making booze; lots of award-winning booze. And guests are privy to the booze-making process by touring the facilities. But the tour is not your typical distillery tour … oh no, definitely not. “I thought, ‘What if you could make the boat ride for the Pirates of the Caribbean, but

you could fix the ride by making it so you could stop the boat and get out and drink with the pirates?’” said Bryan Davis, co-founder, inventor and CEO of Lost Spirits Distillery. He has a background in amusement park design and an art degree—his combined love for these mediums shines through in the most spectacular ways. While guests are privy to the spirit-making process and the rooms (one filled to the brim with barrels of rum) and labs associated with the process—you are also able to check out a patented contraption invented by Davis that speeds up the process of aging alcohol—visually this is

Distinct characters drive the experience at the Atomic Saloon. That’s not always the case when it comes to the different variety shows presented up and down the Las Vegas Strip. Every stage production gives you something memorable and contains at least one performance that will stick with you for a long time. But after you catch Atomic Saloon Show, you’ll remember their names as well as what they did and how they did it, and how their performance made you laugh or cheer. It starts with the saloon’s roughand-rowdy proprietor, Boozy Skunkton. She’s definitely calling the shots at this Wild West outpost, constantly wrangling and regulating her indifferent employees while fending off outlaws and offering her finest hospitality to VIP clientele, but it’s easy to see Boozy wishes she could run a tighter ship. with the property’s plush steakhouse, Barry’s Downtown Prime, and talk with owner and chef Barry S. Dakake and chef de cuisine Patrick Hodge. And we get a peek at Stadium Swim, open year round. “One of the things we wanted to do in building the biggest sportsbook is I wanted to do something that was a great ‘wow’ moment for the customer,” said owner Derek Stevens. “We wanted to make sure from a business-model perspective that we really focused in on professional sports bettors—bettors that make large wagers. We wanted to make sure that we addressed all of their needs, but at the same time we felt that we’d be able to address the wants and the desires of a novice sports bettor— for people that are making their first bet.
