From the Editor If You Can Dream It ...

Las Vegas’ penchant for re-creating famous structures, from the Eiffel Tower to Egyptian pyramid, is often mocked in popular culture. When Steve Wynn achieved his dream of building a hotel that re-created Lake Como (and contained actual Picassos), it was mocked on Saturday Night Live. But I have yet to see anyone watching the Fountains of Bellagio mock it, just as I have yet to see any tourist or visitor look up at the faux Statue of Liberty at New York-New York and roll their eyes. That’s because these things are not kitschy or corny; they’re part of what makes Las Vegas the tourist destination on the planet, proof that if you can dream it, you can achieve it. One of the best examples of this philosophy is the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay, this week’s cover feature (“A Toothy Subject,” p. 30). As much as Bugsy Siegel or Howard Hughes fantasized about Las Vegas’ future, it’s doubtful either conceived of a place where sharks literally swim around you. Grab the kids and get ready for an unforgettable adventure. And that’s just the beginning of the amazing experiences you’ll want to enjoy in this week’s issue. Editor at large Brock Radke takes you on a journey into Cirque du Soleil’s original Las Vegas production, Mystère at Treasure Island (“Center Ring,”

p. 32). This was a game-changer when it debuted in 1993, and it’s lost none of its appeal or excitement. As everyone knows by now, live music is back and going strong in Las Vegas, and this week sees the arrival of Sting to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace (“His Way,” p. 10). Speaking of live entertainment, The Mirage’s Aces of Comedy Series welcomes Tim Allen this week (“He’s Got the Tools,” p. 17). And if you’re looking for a show for the whole family, it doesn’t get much better than Mat Franco at The Linq (“Always Reinventing,” p. 14). Food for All It’s that age-old question when you’re on vacation: “Where should we eat?” Let’s make it simple—head to Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer. This is a place where the whole group can find something. Meat lovers can indulge in burgers that are all griddled, not grilled, and served medium rare on a potato roll. There are all types of recipes from Mexican, Texan and all-American to bison, wagyu and turkey. His Way Sting has always had an unpredictable, mystical aura around him. That’s largely an extension of his songs, at times warm and accessible, at other times ominous with dark underpinnings. You never really know what direction he’ll go next. His latest show is entitled My Songs, based on his 2019 album of the same name in which he takes his most famous arrangements and updates them, stripping them of some of the studio effects.

Suncoast steakhouse serves up a casual vibe Here’s a little tip for you: Head off-Strip to the Suncoast resort in the upscale community of Summerlin in the western reaches of the Vegas Valley, and you’ll enjoy one of the most relaxing, delicious dinners you’ve had in a long time. The Suncoast’s SC Prime Steakhouse has a casual, intimate vibe with attentive staff and soaring, floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over the valley. Get a reservation just before sunset and you’ll have a gorgeous view of lights stretching across the horizon. It’s a little magical. Start with a classic cocktail like a lemon drop, or a nice glass of wine, and you’ll find they go nicely with the sounds of jazz and Sinatra in the background. The menu here is focused on

classic, quality steakhouse fare, and that starts with the appetizers. You can enjoy crab cakes with a red pepper remoulade or prime rib crostini, with shaved prime rib, horseradish spread and tender, melt-in-your mouth sautéed onions. The BLT wedge salad is crisp with a chunk of flavorful blue cheese and teardrop tomatoes. Sub in the house-made white French dressing and it couldn’t possibly be better. And even the beef broth for the French onion soup is long-simmered in-house. Steaks include custom-aged Creekstone Farms Prime ribeye and New York cuts, prime rib in two sizes, and a pan-roasted, 24-ounce, bone-in ribeye with cilantro garlic butter. All

the sauces here are house-made, so indulge in peppercorn cream or a red wine reduction. Other specialties include the Chilean sea bass, served with white miso sauce and bok choy. And the sides and veg are delish! Although the chef can create a special vegetarian dish (I recently enjoyed vegan empanadas with a tomatoey dipping sauce that was to die for), I’d recommend ordering up a few sides; the butter-whipped potatoes are so silky, and the huge grilled asparagus so very tender. Walk of Fame Fremont Street Experience combines sights and sounds with a rich history. Originally opened to horse and buggy traffic all the way back to 1905, Fremont Street closed off its throughway in 1994. About a decade later, Viva Vision was added—a multisensory attraction that covers the top of the pedestrian walkway and displays amazing visuals and music 24 hours per day. And in 2014, Fremont Street Experience really got people’s adrenaline pumping with the installation of SlotZilla, a ginormous mock-slot machine that reaches 12 stories into the air and features an 850-foot zipline and 1,750-foot zoomline. Riders can glide traditional zipline-style or shoot out of the giant slot machine like a flying superhero! Fremont Street Experience is also home to several casinos, all within short walking distances from one another—very different from the main drag of the Las Vegas Strip. Gordon Welcomes You

Reality show comes to life at Caesars Palace restaurant Entertainment meets flavor at Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen, one of the most popular restaurants on the Las Vegas Strip. Named for Ramsay’s hit reality series, the dining room will be instantly recognizable to fans with its now-iconic red and blue kitchens. And the cuisine fans see being served on the show is all here, from the pan-seared scallops and lobster risotto to filet mignon—although, unlike the show, all are cooked to perfection each and every time, of course. Take a seat in the high-energy dining room and get ready for a real adventure. The signature cocktail list has a bit of everything, from

the Meet Your Maker, made with Maker’s Mark, of course, Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur, mint, apple, strawberry and cinnamon, to the Peat’s Dragon, featuring Ardbeg Scotch, Patrón Citrónge orange liqueur, lemon and egg white. But fans of Ramsay will love the Notes From Gordon, a cocktail featuring Plymouth dry gin, green tea, lemongrass, peach and lemon. In addition to a delicious sip, you’ll get a note with the drink containing a bon mot Ramsay has said on his show. (“This crab is so undercooked, it just told me its name is Sebastian!”) Most know about Ramsay’s beef Wellington, a juicy cut of meat surrounded by a pastry shell in

a red wine demi-glace, but explore the rest of the menu and you’ll find other delights. Jidori chicken scallopini is pure decadence, served with roasted pee wee potatoes, artichokes and lacinato kale, while crispy skin salmon is perfectly complemented by warm white beans, sea bean salad, Iberico chorizo, all in a citrus beurre blanc. Rise Above Top of the World combines great views with great food. Appetizers include shrimp cocktail, oysters on the half shell, the impressive seafood tower (featuring Maine lobster, poached shrimp, king crab and oysters), and the tuna and king crab poke, including crispy wontons, spicy cucumbers and yuzu-whipped avocado. A Prime beef tartare surf and turf comes with shrimp, avocado and smoked tomato gazpacho. For entrées, excellent new options for the seafood lover include the stuffed roasted lobster tail (with king crab), or grilled Icelandic salmon, with a spring ratatouille and vine-roasted tomatoes. Always Reinventing The personality, sense of humor and smile that helped Mat Franco win America’s Got Talent are in full force in his show at the Mat Franco Theater. He’s instantly likable, and spends plenty of time with his audiences, finding out information from them that gets used at the end of the show in a signature illusion that lends itself to the name of his show—Magic Reinvented Nightly. This final bit ensures that every performance will be different.

And Franco has added several new illusions. One involves a poker table and four volunteers, and trust us—no matter how closely you’re watching the cards, nothing can prepare you for how this unfolds. Another new illusion involves a helium-filled balloon that “switches” with another balloon not filled with helium. You could try to figure it out, but as Franco would ask, why do you care? In a nod to all the Vegas movers and shakers who helped shape Las Vegas, the swanky Legacy Club glorifies luminaries like Howard Hughes, Benny Binion, Sam Boyd and many more with custom metal busts and beautifully painted portraits. Celebrity chef’s steakhouse is a must-visit Talk to anyone who’s eaten at a Michael Mina restaurant and they’ll all undoubtedly tell you the same thing: They can’t wait to go back. The qualities that constitute a Mina restaurant are distinctive—the vibe you get from the dining room, the way the waitstaff makes you feel, the variety in the menu and, naturally, the food, all sourced from the finest purveyors and cooked to exacting standards. StripSteak may have the word “steak” in its name, but trust us, that’s only the beginning of what you’ll find here. Those return visits we referenced earlier? That’s because there will always be something on the menu you didn’t get to try.

The spirit of unadulterated fun begins immediately once you sit down and peruse cocktail names like Dr. Feelgood (a sweet, delicious libation made with bourbon, vanilla liqueur, housemade Dr. Pepper syrup and bitters), Maggie May (so refreshing with tequila, aperol, fresh lime and agave), and Piggie Manhattan (rye, Carpano Antica and bitters). We’re not saying you have to have a cocktail to enjoy a meal here, but … Wait a minute, what am I saying? You’re in Vegas. Of course you have to have a cocktail! The appetizers might want to make you stay awhile before moving on to mains. The raw bar serves up morsels like tuna and tomato poke,

hamachi and ahi poppers, Pacific oysters, and dashi-poached shrimp cocktail, while the small plates section ranges from hot (our favorite here is “instant” bacon, a tempura oyster with daikon and a soy glaze) to cold (oh, those lobster tacos, containing pineapple, bell pepper and cilantro). Notice how we haven’t even gotten to meat yet? And yes, there’s so much to tempt you in this arena, from a Mishima Reserve, 7-ounce wagyu rib cap to a 40-ounce tomahawk for two (If you don’t order one of Mina’s amazing sauces like shitake chimichurri or truffle marrow butter, you’re truly missing out). –Ken Miller Mandalay Bay, 702.632.7200

So Much Goodness, So Little Time It can be hard to decide on your entrée in a normal restaurant, let alone in an Italian restaurant where the chef’s name is Marc Vetri. But try you must. At Osteria Fiorella, Vetri offers a mouthwatering selection of pasta, from cannellloni with a pork ragu and bechamel sauce to ricotta gnocchi with brown butter and crispy leeks. Using the ricotta ensures the gnocchi are super soft and pillowy. Pair it with wine or a cocktail. If you like seafood, the linguine with littleneck clams may be more up your alley. For something completely different, try the sweet corn agnolotti with pickled blueberries. You’ll also find pizzas, like a classic margherita and a mortadella with pistachio pesto and mozzarella. And for brunch, the smoked salmon comes with onion and crème fraîche. Other entrées include bone-in ribeye, branzino and veal chops. There are some wonders on the dessert menu, too. He’s Got the Tools For more than 30 years, Tim Allen has been a huge part of all of our lives, whether on TV in shows like Home Improvement or Last Man Standing or in movies like The Santa Clause or the Toy Story franchise. But as ubiquitous as Allen has been in pop culture, at his heart he’s a stand-up comedian, and he’s about to remind Vegas audiences of that this week as part of the Aces of Comedy series. Find everything you’re looking for here Two of the most fashionable and break-the-bank streets in the world are Via Condotti in Rome, Italy and rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris. Kari Olsen

GM is right where she planned to be What did you want to be when you grew up? Some say doctor, lawyer, actor. Kari Olsen knew she wanted to be a general manager in the hospitality industry, and that’s exactly the career path she pursued. Not only that, her career turned into a passion. The California native was kind of “born into the industry,” she says. Her parents owned liquor stores; her grandparents owned a small restaurant. “So I’ve always been around the industry since I was a young kid—helping my parents,” Olsen explains. “I just knew I couldn’t be someone that sits behind a desk doing the same thing every day.” She put her plans into action applying to UNLV’s hospitality program in 1994, and after graduation entered the Vegas industry. She’s managed restaurants at Hard Rock Hotel, Mandalay Bay and the off-Strip Gordon Biersch. Four years ago, she joined Sushi Samba at The Grand Canal Shoppes, where she currently is general manager.

“From the minute people walk in the door, it’s my job to make sure we’re staffed, it’s presentable, make sure guests are having a good time,” Olsen says. “Here, people come for the experience; they come to get taken away.” As the general manager, Olsen says leading by example is important, and so is having patience—a lot of it. It’s also important to be a good delegator, and she says, “I will never ask my staff to do something that I won’t do, but I also won’t do their job for them.” Reflecting back on her career, Olsen says, “When I was younger (and) helping my dad or helping at my grandparents’ restaurant, they always taught me hard work pays off. When I was just starting out, I always wanted to know more. I always wanted to know what other managers were doing. I would come in an hour early, maybe stay late. I always wanted to be taught something new. It’s always been my passion to be a general manager.” –Kiko Miyasato

The food menu also harkens back to the first iteration of Olives, with many of the same dishes offered more than 30 years ago. Your meal begins with a basket of pizza-like bread served with green and black olive tapenades and a wonderful basil herb ricotta spread. You’ll be tempted to overindulge, but save room for more greatness. Several dishes are meant to be shared, like the beef carpaccio with gorgonzola polenta, balsamic onion, scallion cream and

shaved Parmigiano; and pastas including tortelli, a mix of sweet and savory, composed of butternut squash and sage brown butter; and agnolotti, filled with veal breast cooked slow and low, joined with basil and lemon ricotta. Entrées present as works of art with a range of colors, like the 12-ounce wood-grilled sirloin block served with Tuscan croutons, balsamic onions topped with a rich Gorgonzola cheese sauce; shawarma-spiced salmon with red quinoa tabouli and cherry raita; salt-crusted sea bass with miso glaze and asparagus; and classic chicken Milanese with arugula, tomato, reggiano and lemon vinaigrette. Stars of the dessert menu are the Very Vanilla souffle served with vanilla ice cream and vanilla crème anglaise, a nice change from the ubiquitous chocolate versions; and mascarpone panna cotta with blackberries, balsamico and sweet basil. The four-time James Beard award winner English continues to expand his local culinary foothold with this opening, also recently opening The Beast in Area15. We can expect more to come in the near future (especially as he is now a Las Vegas resident), including the opening of The English Hotel and Pepper Club restaurant in a newly built four-story property in the Downtown Arts District.

Takeout is a big deal at Flower Child, too, and seasonal dishes recently introduced on the menu include

a butternut squash and organic pear salad with Brussels sprouts and ricotta salata, barbecued heirloom carrots with avocado ranch, and a spicy sweet potato noodle bowl with bok choy, coconut milk and jalapeño. But you’ll discover all-new flavor and ingredient combinations at the acclaimed Chikyu Vegan Sushi Bar & Izakaya (725.777.3787) in the Henderson neighborhood of Silverado Ranch. There isn’t another restaurant like this one anywhere in the Las Vegas area, and most cities don’t have a similar concept, where traditional Japanese techniques are expertly applied to a plant-based menu that includes ramen, robata, sushi rolls and nigiri, tempura and more. The hearty mushroom rice claypot is one of the most popular dishes, and might change the way you think about vegan dining. Another completely unique restaurant and overall hidden gem is the centrally located POTs (702.754.6200), serving Egyptian delicacies with a slight Mediterranean influence. Charred baba ghanoush elevates the robust flavors of eggplant and red peppers to new heights while the seemingly simple arugula salad, laced with feta cheese, walnuts and pomegranate dressing, is a refreshing midcourse. Definitely experiment with the section of Egyptian street foods, including the lentil, pasta, and chickpea dish known as koshari, topped with crispy onions and a spicy tomato sauce. If you’re looking for plant-based meals on the Las Vegas Strip, remember that casino restaurants are really built to welcome all different types of diners, so while there are fewer veggie-only eateries inside the resorts, most of the top-quality restaurants will have a plethora of meat-free options on the menu. One of the better-known destinations for vegans and vegetarians is Caesars Palace, where The Forum Shops plays host to True Food Kitchen (702.340.2600) and its wide selection of healthier dishes, most without meat. Inside the casino, the legendary Nobu (702.785.6674) offers an entirely plant-based omakase menu. The Venetian resort is proud to be the home of the first all-vegan restaurant on the Strip, Truth & Tonic Wellness Café (702.414.3633). Serving breakfast and lunch favorites, this inspired eatery is changing the game with artisan housebaked breads, flavorful frittatas made with Just Egg, portobello mushroom or soyrizo tacos, and a house-made veggie burger topped with avocado, heirloom tomato and black bean hummus. ODDS ARE your kids have finally seen the movie Jaws (it’s streaming everywhere these days), and odds are they might be a bit … obsessed with sharks at the moment. If that’s the case, there’s a perfect attraction for families in Las Vegas that will create memories to last a lifetime. Shark Reef Aquarium is one of the most unique destinations in the world—after all, if someone said you could find denizens of the briny deep in the middle of the desert, would you believe them? But believe it, because not only does this manmade wonder feature sharks (and a huge variety of them to boot), it’s got more than 2,000 creatures, all of them in no way indigenous to the Mojave Desert. You’ll start your journey by marveling at how humid it is; Shark Reef Aquarium simulates the climate necessary to sustain this life, and it might take a second or two to get used to. But ultimately it becomes a vital part of the experience. This is no simulation; it’s all very real, and when you see some of the animals close up, it can almost be a little unnerving. For example, there’s no way you would ever want to approach Komodo dragons, Johnston’s crocodiles or piranhas, but there they are, all just a bit behind the see-through partitions. Menacing? Oh yeah. Fascinating to look at? Absolutely. You quickly realize it’s possible to lose hours here—watching some of these creatures, from Burmese pythons to South American species like pacu, arapaima, razorback catfish and motoro stingrays, can be absolutely hypnotic. When you do get to the sharks, it’s almost overwhelming, as there are so many to look

at. A simulated shipwreck is visible through a large viewing area (a tunnel allows you to see fish swim all around you). You may not know exactly what type of shark you’re looking at, and that’s understandable; the varieties Mandalay Bay 702.632.4555

here include blacktip, grey reef, Galapagos, Port Jackson, sand tiger, sandbar, whitetip reef, bonnet head, nurse … we suggest taking lots of pictures here. Maybe there’s a shark expert back home who can help you figure it all out. Perhaps the best thing about Shark Reef is that it makes you want to know more about the world you live in, that life is everywhere, and that our perspective is severely limited. The magic of Cirque du Soleil’s Mystére is stronger than ever HOW DOES SOMETHING magical become familiar and yet retain its magic? Ask the creators, cast and crew of Mystére, who have been enchanting and entertaining audiences at Treasure Island since December 1993. It’s the original must-see Cirque du Soleil production on the Las Vegas Strip, and no matter how

many times you’ve experienced this vibrant, avant-garde circus spectacular, you continue to feel you must see it again. Mystére is an institution in Las Vegas and around the world, and the first permanent resident Cirque show, which explains why, after the long live entertainment shutdown

of 2020, it was the first production from the Canadian company to return to its Vegas stage on June 28. Its international cast of 65 onstage artists combine aerial acrobatics, music, dance, comedy and drama in a dreamlike environment to create a phenomenon that has yet to be duplicated, though it remains one of the most influential theatrical presentations in the world. The 1,600-seat theater at TI feels like an intimate environment when you first enter, with the stage sunken while cozy seats wrap around it, providing access to these innovative performers. But what feels small unfolds into something more massive as the veteran clowns interacting with the audience during the preshow depart and thundering Japanese taiko drums guide you into the world of Mystére. beings display daring and mischievous behavior. A large and lovable infant plays with his toys, including a motorized car that speeds around the stage. A pair of muscled men arise to balance on a half-sphere and support each other’s impossible feats of strength, and you’re sitting close enough to see the graceful movements that make this hand-tohand act so memorable. As the famous Chinese poles are erected at center stage for one of the most noteworthy performances, the creepy army of “Double Faces”

descends from above, ready to join in the acrobatic fun. The ability of these athlete-artists to pull off impossible physical tricks and make everything look so easy is difficult to truly understand; you can keep coming back to see Mystére every night and you still might not grasp their skills. Just when the onstage antics reach a fever pitch, the live band performing atop two pedestals kicks the music into gear and the action moves to the sky. A classic group trapeze act recalls traveling circuses

of yesteryear, an age-old art form that still feels dangerous and exciting after generations of performance. And a wild trapeze-and-bungee act later in the show, sparked by bright, fringe-covered costumes that seem to transform the artists into otherworldly creatures, feels like a tribal celebration of joy and togetherness. Mystére changed Las Vegas forever almost 28 years ago, and now the show is changing moods and minds and maybe lives on a nightly basis. The magic never left.

Celebrating the headliners who helped shape Vegas entertainment There’s no real formula that determines how residencies succeed in Las Vegas. Some stars coast on name recognition, or they find themselves able to capitalize on nostalgia; some stars learn that audiences are yearning for their return to the spotlight, while others just happen to be in the right place at the right time. Yet, one thing all successful, groundbreaking residencies seem to have in common is that they’re different. And while that may sound simple, if it were, a lot more stars would be doing it.

In Las Vegas’ rich, storied history of entertainment, some headliners have stood above the rest. This is not to say one entertainer is better than another, but that what he or she accomplished helped elevate the idea of what a Vegas residency could be. We at Las Vegas Magazine want to celebrate the entertainers who helped shape our cultural landscape into what we know today; thus, the following is our list of some of the most influential headliners to grace the Vegas stage.

RAT PACK Vegas Personified If one were to describe the founding fathers of Vegas entertainment, the list would likely include Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop—that’s the Rat Pack that ruled Vegas in the ’60s. All were individually successful in Vegas, and while it would be good-natured to say they all have their place in Vegas history, it’s Frank, Sammy and Dean that everybody remembers. With that said, the Rat Pack personified Vegas. They were the total embodiment of the boozy, schmoozey, smokey, classic Vegas that many long and lust for, and their performances at the Copa Room at The Sands are the stuff of legend. It’s an attitude that helped build this town, which makes their influence almost inescapable. And who would want it any other way?

BRITNEY SPEARS Fountain of Youth Some may call Britney Spears’ residency a byproduct of Celine Dion’s. Perhaps that’s true, but their impact was starkly different. While Dion paved the way for older stars, like Elton John and Rod Stewart, to reinvigorate their careers through a Vegas residency, Spears proved there was a market in Vegas for younger acts, which ultimately brought in a younger clientele. The earlier construction of The Cosmopolitan and City Center, along with a few modern casino renovations, hinted that the Strip was trying to adopt a more contemporary aesthetic. Arguably, Spears’ residency helped Vegas fully realize that venture, and it’s mostly been successful. If Spears had flopped, Backstreet Boys, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera and Lady Gaga residencies would have been, at best, unlikely.

Did you know? In 1987, Siegfried & Roy signed the biggest contract in Vegas history to perform at The Mirage: Five years, 44 weeks per year, six shows per week, $57.5 million. SIEGFRIED & ROY Tiger Kings In his book God, No!, Penn Jillette made one of the most astute assessments on the impact of Mirage headliners Siegfried & Roy: “When you take something easy and safe and make it look difficult and death-defying, you are a cheesy circus act. When you take something impossible and make it look easy, you’re an artist … What they do looks easy and simple and, well, it just happens to be close to impossible and stirs your heart to the very depths.” Siegfried & Roy elevated the typical Vegas magic show, so much so that the typical Vegas magic show became a copycat of Siegfried & Roy, replete with gaudy showmanship, tigers and dancing girls. Their run ended prematurely due to a tragic onstage accident, but no one did it better than them, and no one ever will.

DAVID COPPERFIELD Game Changer Not only is David Copperfield one of the most influential magicians in Vegas, he’s one of the most influential magicians ever. If making the Statue of Liberty disappear and levitating over the Grand Canyon are any indication, Copperfield brought large-scale, illusion-based magic into the mainstream, which clearly inspired fellow magicians like Criss Angel and David Blaine. But what makes his Vegas show so endearing is his ability to weave stories together through his magic, whether it involves a heartwarming tribute to his father, or an encounter with aliens inside the MGM Grand. And, most of all, even though he’s performed magic professionally for more than 45 years, he’s still not afraid to challenge himself or take risks, and that’s why his Vegas show never gets old.

SANTANA Art of Intimacy Santana is known for being the first true rock band to have a Vegas residency, and the group has been in Vegas for more than a decade. Since then, we’ve seen other rock acts find their place in Vegas, such as Aerosmith, Billy Idol and David Lee Roth. But more than simply ushering in a new wave of Vegas entertainment, Santana has mastered the art of intimacy. They perform in one of the smaller venues in town, House of Blues, making the band feel more up close and personal than if they were playing at, say, The Colosseum. It allows for a reciprocal relationship between artist and audience, making each individual performance unique to each audience. PENN & TELLER Truth Seekers What Penn & Teller do so well is demystify magic. Yet, somehow they still find a way to make magic mystifying. To them, magic is not an illusion, it’s a trick. They don’t want audiences to think for a moment that magic is real, because everyone knows that it’s not. Rather, they want their magic tricks to be good enough that even when audiences know they’re not real, the tricks are still interesting. That may seem subtle, but it makes a difference, because some modern magicians all too often make a mockery out of magic. Newcomers to the Strip, such as Piff the Magic Dragon and Mat Franco, seem to follow the Gospel of Penn & Teller, for they similarly strive to

make magic fun and meaningful, rather than something one has to believe in to enjoy. WAYNE NEWTON Mr. Las Vegas Everybody knows Wayne Newton is the unofficial ambassador of Las Vegas. His name is synonymous with this town. But how did he achieve such wild success? He had a few hits, a boyish smile and a distinctive high voice. Other than that, there doesn’t seem to be any concrete reasons one can pinpoint that would account for such triumph. Yet, like other successful Vegas headliners, he was a highly charismatic entertainer who displayed top-notch showmanship. At age 16, he started playing in town with his brother Jerry—six shows a day for 51 weeks. While kids his age were busy being teenagers, he cut his teeth

in showbiz at Vegas clubs, eventually learning how to masterfully work a crowd. Unlike Liberace, he was successful without gimmicks, and unlike Elvis, he was successful without colossal fame. What he achieved in this town was unprecedented, and Vegas likely won’t see anyone like him ever again. ELVIS PRESLEY The Comeback Kid By the late 1960s, The King had lost his groove. His music wasn’t selling, and he spent much of his time making unwatchable movies. At the time, it might have even been accurate to have called Elvis a joke. But, little did people know, he was on the verge of a resurgence. Elvis’ iconic ’68 comeback special on NBC reminded everyone that he was still cool. Soon after, he inked a deal with the International

best thing at Divas. (He is emcee of Legends in Concert currently). LIBERACE The Flash Liberace routinely annoyed stodgy music critics with his grandiose piano playing and showmanship. But it’s that flashy, excessive persona that made him so endearing, as well as rich. Regarding the criticism, he’d often quip that he cried all the way to the bank. (By the late ’70s, he was reportedly making up to $300,000 per week at the Hilton.) His over-the-top antics, such as riding across the stage in a Rolls-Royce and wearing exotic (some may say ridiculous) costumes, essentially defined what the Vegas residency would become: an in-your-face spectacular. But, more importantly, he had an innate ability to connect with audiences, not only making them think they were seeing a show, but rather the performance of an old friend.

The reopening of RuPaul’s Drag Race Live! earlier this year at the Flamingo was a monumental event for several reasons, perhaps most notably because it marked the return of one of the Strip’s hottest new shows. The flamboyant original production based on the Emmy Award-winning TV competition show made its initial Las Vegas debut in late January 2020, garnering rave reviews and building massive momentum before the pandemic set in and halted live entertainment everywhere. “It was definitely disappointing, also because we had all been touring prior to coming to Las Vegas and we were looking forward to doing this show in one place and leading a somewhat normal life,” said Asia O’Hara, one of six stunning queens anchoring the cast. “Just when we thought we were getting comfortable and could take a deep breath and enjoy the show and our lives, it was shut down. “But it’s great to be back and a lot of local entertainers have been saying that they feel like things are better now than the first time around (before the pandemic). As soon as I got into town, I drove down the Strip to see the lights and the people and feel the energy.” If these talented performers are ready to bring that renewed energy to the stage, imagine how excited the audiences are.
