“And they called it Puppy Love ...” “Oh, Mandy, you came and you gave without taking ...” There are just some song lyrics that couldn’t belong to any other performer, lyrics that helped define their entire careers (as they would fully admit, for better or for worse), lyrics that make the whole world want to sing along. As if I have to actually remind anyone, I’m talking about Donny Osmond and Barry Manilow, both of whom are performing in Las Vegas this week, and both of whom still have star power to spare. Osmond, who’s returned to the Strip after more than a decade with sister Marie, has crafted a solo show that’s drawing rave reviews. In this issue, editor at large Brock Radke talks to Osmond about the creation of the show (“It’s the Life,” p. 38). I got the opportunity to see one of Manilow’s shows before the pandemic shutdown. It was my honor to write this week’s feature celebrating his return to Westgate Las Vegas (“Can’t Smile Without Him,” p. 30). Whether you’re a “Fanilow” or not, you need to get a ticket for this show. We here at Las Vegas Magazine can’t get enough of Strip entertainment, so we’ve included plenty of other shows in the ensuing pages to give you some ideas, including Blue Man Group at Luxor (“Rhythm of Delight,” p. 11), Derek Hough: No Limit at

This issue highlights a very exciting, limited-time show that’s taking over Mayfair Supper Club at Bellagio until Oct. 31: Lío, a show that has taken Ibiza by storm (“Dining Combines With Decadent Entertainment,” p. 22). We’ve also made sure to include a few must-visit attractions, including the Fountains of Bellagio (“Eternal Waters,” p. 12) and Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay (“Aquatic Adventure,” p. 14). Like the Elvis song says, you’ve “got a lot o’ livin’ to do.” Get to it!

Dance Party In what has to be one of the most high-energy shows to ever hit the Las Vegas Strip, Derek Hough: No Limit features a stunningly talented cast performing a variety of dance styles to music that spans the ages, with the dancer/actor/singer at its center. Hough, known to millions for Dancing With the Stars, has assembled a cast of dancers whose moves rival his own (and that’s truly saying something). He’s joined by three men and four women, all of whom vault through the air, pirouette, strut, twist, salsa and much more throughout the 90-minute show. In addition to the athleticism he makes look easy, Hough occasionally picks up the mic to belt out a song, or picks up a guitar to play a lick from “Hotel California.” In the spirit of Sammy Davis Jr. and Donny Osmond, Hough really does it all in this show. When he does take a breath (which isn’t often), he even shows a sense of humor with dancing partner Hayley Erbert (in one clever bit, he kneels down as if to propose, only to tie his shoelace). He also pays homage to the past, including several numbers from “Singin’ in the Rain.” –Ken Miller

Healthy Portions If you find it hard to eat healthily when you’re on vacation, then head to True Food Kitchen, which keeps a focus on anti-inflammatory foods, and that means that the delicious dishes you’ll find here aren’t bad for you. Many dishes are gluten-free and vegetarian or vegan. The charred cauliflower, edamame guacamole and herb hummus are all great starters. The margherita pizza is a great shareable option, with organic DiNapoli tomatoes and

mozzarella. The vegan pie features spinach, roasted mushrooms, caramelized onions and vegan almond ricotta. If you want meat, there are plenty of options, from the spicy tuna spring roll to a grass-fed burger. And the turkey burger comes with avocado, smoked gouda and jalapeño remoulade. Wayne Newton: Up Close & Personal is equal parts entertainment and history lesson, a fascinating look at Newton’s career path, the entertainers who were key in his life, and the difference he’s made in the lives of others. Expect classics like “Viva Las Vegas” and “Danke Schoen,” but there’s also a Q&A session with the audience and many clips of Newton as a young man, showing off his ridiculous talents, both vocally and instrumentally. Depending on which night you attend, you might hear stories about Jack Benny, Bobby Darin, Jackie Gleason, George Burns and many more. Rhythm of Delight
Luxor production is pure, unbridled fun Before the Blue Man Group show even starts, you’re in a great mood, thanks to a live digital ticker on both sides of the crowd giving the audience instructions, such as applauding for notable athletes in the crowd or saying “Happy birthday!” to someone in unison. It’s so simple, but it really gets the crowd warmed up and loose for the fun to come. Once the propulsive EDM music begins (anyone who’s been to Electric Daisy Carnival will know exactly what we’re talking about), it’s hard to not move your body around. The Blue Men instantly appear, making sounds with objects that don’t look like instruments at all, moving

their bodies rhythmically, their eyes wide and full of curiosity. Families with young children should know that this is as all-ages as a show can get. There’s barely anything spoken during the entire show (other than tutorials on how colors are interpreted in our brain and how plumbing works); the Blue Men wordlessly discover the musical properties of Cap’n Crunch and cell phones, not to mention the artistic possibilities of chewed gumballs, mouths full of marshmallows, and paint spilled on drums that are being furiously pounded. One of the show’s signature moments—when an audience volunteer is brought onstage to
share a dinner with the Blue Men, complete with music, flowers and Twinkies—has been changed slightly in keeping with safety protocols; we don’t want to give too much away, other than to say the segment is every bit as hilarious as before. By the time the show climaxes with large, mechanical insects that can be played like a percussion instrument, followed by smoke rings billowing from drum sets—we dare you to not try to catch one!—you’ll be on your feet and working up a sweat. Sometimes we need reminding that, in this time of great division, music is still a uniting force. –Ken Miller

Hip Zen Las Vegas has plenty of options for Asian cuisine, but you can’t go wrong with Tao Asian Bistro, which recently celebrated its 16th anniversary in the city. The restaurant draws a mix of guests, some coming for the stellar menu, and others who are there to party the night away in the nightclub, which really starts rocking after dinner ends. In the restaurant, try such goodies as Peking duck spring roll with hoisin sauce; bamboo steamed vegetable dumplings (super colorful); Chilean sea bass satay, avocado tempura (avocado is fabulous when hot), honey glazed salmon or the Tao Angry Dragon roll with eel and kabayaki sauce. If you are dining with a bunch of folks, definitely get it all family-style so everyone can sample. The desserts rock, too, and Tao’s giant white chocolate fortune cookie is an Instgram dream. In the popping nightclub, find bottle service and specialty cocktails, plus a different DJ practically every weekend, including E-Rock on Worship Thursdays, Greg Lopez on Friday and DJ Five on Saturday this week. –Nina King

Eternal Waters When you think of Las Vegas’ top tourist attractions, it makes the list every single time. We’re talking about the famed Fountains of Bellagio, an epic feat in design and dazzling production as more than 200 water-emitting devices spread across 1,000 feet rocket water nearly 500 feet up. The attraction animates the water, so guests watch choreographed “dances” to songs like Cher’s “Believe” and Elvis Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas.” It’s also a top spot

Aria restaurant is a hot spot extraordinaire One of the outstanding things about dining on the Las Vegas Strip is that, in many instances it’s an experience, and this is so true with one restaurant in particular—Catch. From the moment you lay eyes on the entrance, right off the hotel’s grand lobby, you know you’re in for something special. You start by walking through an 80-foot-long, tunnel-like pergola blossoming with a rainbow-colored explosion of florals, plants and lights (this spot has had so many selfie moments that its hashtag has thousands of posts on Instagram). The tunnel leads into a multiroom dining space where guests can take a seat at the main bar and the spacious, loungelike front room, or take it more upscale with a roomy booth in the main

dining room, adorned with a ginormous, re-created Mediterranean olive tree lit up with huge, glowing bulbs. For an extra-special experience, ask to book one of the birdcage booths. Now on to the menu, because the food is just as eye-popping and deliciously fun as the space. The restaurant’s modus operandi when it comes to food is taking the yummiest parts of Asian cuisine and inventively marrying them with seafood, sushi and steak dishes (with some tasty vegetarian options, too). Starters that satisfy include the crunchy rice cakes that look like little loaves of bread, the hellfire roll with spicy tuna, pear and balsamic, and the ever-popular Catch roll, made with crab, salmon and a specially made miso honey
sauce. Hot dishes that deserve some attention include the wagyu gyoza, filet skewers, king crab tempura and the popular A5 Japanese Miyazaki wagyu, thinly sliced and cooked at the table on a signature hot stone. For main dish options, Catch delivers a bounty of seafood like Cantonese lobster, sautéed wildcaught snapper and herb-roasted branzino. For turf lovers, a New York strip or filet will satisfy (or share with your sweetie the gargantuan 36-ounce tomahawk). Finish off the night with the visually cool and deliciously chocolatey Hit Me chocolate cake, a stack of dulce de leche ice cream, brownie and devil’s food cake, topped with a Klondike bar and drizzled with chocolate syrup. –Kiko Miyasato

That Vintage Feel Barry S. Dakake has created a chill environment that channels the welcoming nature of an old-school steak joint at Barry’s Downtown Prime. All beef is sourced from Midwest supplier Creekstone Farms, a well-respected name. Filet mignon and New York sirloin comes from family-owned brand Revier Cattle Company. Accent those cuts with shrimp, crab lobster, truffles or a variety of sauces. Surf & turf consists of filet medallions and Maine lobster in a red wine sauce. A newer addition to the menu, fire chicken, lives up to its name, with Fresno chilis and jalapeños. And—surprise!—there’s lots of vegan options here. From the beet salad to roasted heirloom cauliflower with watercress pesto, vegans will dine well. A vegetable “meatloaf” even ensures a “tradition-style” entrée will satisfy. It’s even served with fingerling potatoes and mushroom gravy. Desserts range from carrot cake to crème brûlée, but to cap off that real steakhouse meal, go for Baked Alaska. No matter how many times you have had a dish where fire is a main component, it’s always impressive. Aquatic Adventures Here in the desert, the whole idea of seeing sea creatures swimming around seems a little far-fetched—until you enter Shark Reef Aquarium. On the way in you’ll see Komodo dragons and snakes, and get to read a little about the denizens of the attraction and about the Shark Reef itself, which is designed to resemble a temple being reclaimed by the ocean. The aquarium area is staged like a sunken ship, and a whole host of different types

of sharks, sea turtles, octopi, rays, piranha and jellyfish inhabit the various tanks in the attraction. An especially neat area is the glass-walled tunnel, where sharks of various sizes swim around you. Organized Prime
Flamingo steakhouse pays homage to the past No discussion about Las Vegas’ history would be complete without including the mob’s influences. After all, one could argue that Vegas looks the way it does today because of the mob era. And it all started with the Flamingo, forever inextricably linked to famous gangster Bugsy Siegel. That hotel was the beginning of the Strip’s glitz and glamour era, and while the Strip has changed considerably over the decades, its reputation as a city where everything is over the top and anything is possible has only gotten stronger. It’s a big reason visitor traffic remains strong. It’s also a reason you definitely want to dine at Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse at Flamingo.

In addition to being a fabulous place for a meal, the entire restaurant is a tribute to the mob era and some of its most famous figures, including Siegel and fellow gangster Meyer Lansky. The nostalgia starts at the beginning—or, in this case, through the back. The entrance to the steakhouse is designed to look like the secret back entrances mobsters used for access to clubs and restaurants. (This one looks like a bakery, but everything is fake.) From there, you’ll see pictures of some legendary crime bosses, after which you’ll see desserts being prepared through glass and hanging meats. Then you’re escorted into the main dining room, composed
of several distinct areas, including a speakeasy. Once you’ve chosen your dining area, get ready for a seriously special cocktail experience: Your choice of Old-Fashioned made with everything from rum and mezcal to brandy, bitters and—of course—bourbon. Try a few different ones; this menu is so much fun! Starters like hand-cut Prime beef tartare are so good you might want to stop right there. But don’t. Italy Comes Alive Italian cuisine shines at Amalfi by celebrity chef Bobby Flay. The antipasti has plenty of seafood-inspired selections, including a shellfish fritto misto with pistachio pesto, charred octopus, tuna tartare and mussels in a tomato and white wine broth. The ricotta-stuffed squash blossoms are also popular, and in a delicious twist on the classic caprese, bufala mozzarella comes with charred lemon leaves and chopped tomato relish. Choose from pasta like the squid ink fettucine, an eye-catching arrangement with lobster, squid, shrimp and a fra diavolo sauce. The paccheri, with rockfish and cherry tomatoes, presents a milder flavor, and the orecchiette is served with an inventive eggplant Bolognese. You can also choose Jidori chicken al forno, with a pecorino crust, or ribeye, New York Strip or filet mignon steaks, all Prime Angus beef. An amazing side is the crispy potatoes with Parmesan, lemon and oregano. And the desserts are delightful, including Bobby’s pistachio sundae. Anything Goes There is truly no other entertainer quite like Lady Gaga, and there’s no other residency quite like the one she’ll be bringing back to Las Vegas this year. The 12-time Grammy Award winner’s residency, Lady Gaga: Jazz & Piano, which resumes this month at Park Theater at Park MGM, will feature strippeddown versions of her classics and music from the Great American Songbook. The excitement of Jazz & Piano is never knowing quite what Gaga will pull from her

Daniel Gerrish
Gatekeeper is feeling ‘Blue’ Daniel Gerrish is a gatekeeper for the Blue Man Group show at Luxor. Sounds rather esoteric, right? Well, it couldn’t be further from that. “We are the first and last people that guests see,” Gerrish says. “We’re the first impression and last impression.” It’s part of Gerrish’s job to welcome guests and help guide them through the fascinating world and awesome entertainment that is Blue Man Group, as well helping the Blue Men with props throughout the show. Besides those responsibilities, Gerrish serves as an usher, making sure guests get to their seats. “But it’s also about helping to make really cool memories for families that come to the show,” Gerrish says. And Gerrish himself, born in Missouri and raised in Antwerp, New York, is no stranger to creating memories for people through music and entertainment. He studied theater in high school and majored in performance in college. “My first trip to New York City my freshman
year of high school, I went to Broadway to see Lion King and yup, that was it, I knew then I wanted to do something in the industry,” Gerrish says. With a talent for singing, dancing and acting, Gerrish performed in various shows and plays throughout his college career, and after graduating moved out to Vegas to get his feet wet in the entertainment industry. He auditioned and landed the role of gatekeeper for Blue Man Group in 2012 when the show was still at the Monte Carlo and was still performing the pre-show parade through the property (Gerrish was one of its dancers.) While the parade is no longer a part of the Blue Man Group experience since its move to Luxor, and while his role has changed a little bit, Gerrish still loves being a part of the BMG family after almost 10 years with the show. “I look at it as these are guests coming into my house,” he sums up. “I give them a warm welcome and then a fond farewell.” –Kiko Miyasato

Guatemala-born chef Angel Lopez has created a varied menu full of flavors and surprises, all served up by some of the friendliest, most professional staff in the entire valley. Some restaurants promise that you’ll feel pampered throughout your experience, but Primal seriously delivers on this pledge. Appetizers include bone marrow, beef carpaccio (served with the dry ice for a beautiful effect) and black ceviche, served in an shell made of ice that melts as you eat the contents within. Main courses include smoked
halibut (arriving under a cover that is skillfully lifted by your server, revealing billowing wafts of smoke) and a 32-ounce tomahawk that might be one of the best cuts of meat I’ve ever tasted. Make sure to grab some sides like lobster mac and cheese and risotto. Everything here is just bursting with flavor and personality. The presentation extends to the dessert menu as well, particularly the crème brulee, which is flambeed tableside. If you really feel the need to get in touch with your inner John Snow, you really can’t do better than this.

he medieval theme has proven extremely popular when it comes to pop culture, with the Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones enjoying great success. People just can’t seem to get enough of swords, castles and hoisting a stein of mead. And up until now, if you wanted a taste of medieval-themed entertainment in Las Vegas, Tournament of Kings at Excalibur was your only option. But not anymore. Primal Steakhouse opened last year at Boulevard Mall, and it’s already a hit with locals. One visit and you’ll understand why. Taking your seat at Primal Steakhouse is like entering a different world. The décor is straight out of a scene from Thrones—it’s dimly lit with faux chandeliers and wall sconces, dark-colored curtains, dark stone and wood walls with brick outlay and wooden tables and chairs. There are no TVs at all, purposefully done in order to both set the mood and encourage conversation. On one wall hangs a coat of arms containing an assortment of swords, which you are fully encouraged to unsheathe and pose with for photos, as well as helmets you can don. You halfway expect Brienne of Tarth to show up to pour your water! Primal also has a large bar in the center and several separate rooms for special events. But as you’ll quickly discover, any meal at Primal is a special event. The presentation here is just dazzling. Dry ice figures prominently in many dishes and drinks, making for some very memorable pictures and videos you can show your envious friends and family later. All the cocktails are themed, like the Viking Punch, which is served in a real, hollowed-out horn, with dry ice at the bottom so it smokes as you drink it. The medieval sangria looks as good as it tastes, served in an elaborate goblet. Atop this beauty, a sugar cube soaked in Everclear is burned for even more aromas.

But even though deli food is universally appreciated, it’s a cuisine and a type of restaurant that has gradually become harder to find across the country. In Las Vegas, authentic delicatessens or deli-style diners may have been more abundant in the past,

but the cuisine is well-represented today on and off the Strip by a handful of exciting new eateries and some established favorites. A few years ago, Bellagio replaced its popular around-the-clock café with the even more popular Sadelle’s (702.693.7075), a Vegas version of the celebrated New York City original. It’s one of
the best places on the Strip for satisfying breakfast dishes like eggs benedict, a New York-style bacon, egg and cheese sandwich, bagels and lox and much more. years. Go with the corned beef or pastrami on rye and don’t forget the pickle. If you’ve recently returned to Las Vegas for business purposes and attended a convention or meeting at the grand new Las Vegas Convention Center West Hall expansion, you’ve probably already discovered Siegel’s Bagelmania (702.369.3322). This is a new take on a beloved locals’ favorite, a traditional Jewish deli with some of the best bagels and schmears in town and a massive menu that also includes bagel sandwiches, classic deli fare like hot pastrami and smoked whitefish, soups, salads and desserts. When you visit Saginaw’s Delicatessen (702.726.5506) at downtown’s action-packed Circa Resort & Casino, it might be hard to believe this place is less than a year old. Its friendly confines and throwback menu makes it feel like the vintage deli where everyone in the neighborhood meets for breakfast or lunch on a weekly basis. The must-order sandwich at this 24-hour eatery is the Royal Flush Reuben, stacked with corned beef, Swiss and sauerkraut, but there are so many other delicious dishes—vanilla-cinnamon French toast, steak and eggs, matzo ball soup—you may have to come back for another meal the next day. There are few restaurants anywhere in the Vegas Valley that have been packed with customers day in and day out for as long as Bagel Café (702.255.3444), a New York-style experience located just off Summerlin Parkway. This family-owned and operated establishment has been taking care of neighbors since 1996 with fresh baked breads, bagels and pastries, big-portion breakfast plates, stacked savory sandwiches, smoked fish platters and so much more. One of the greatest things about Las Vegas dining is how people come from all over the world and contribute to the scene with their own authentic flavors and style, and this is one restaurant that feels like home no matter where you’re from. –Brock Radke

Barry Manilow returns to deliver the classics

The minute Barry Manilow hits the stage at his Westgate Las Vegas residency, the connection is immediate. After all, Manilow is part of so many memories from all our lives, whether it’s a song in a movie, a song we used to play over and over in our living rooms, or even a commercial jingle that got stuck in our heads on an endless loop. He doesn’t even need to sing a note; once he flashes that charismatic smile, his fans can’t get enough. But of course, the songs are why you bought your ticket, and songs you will get—so many that it’s hard to believe Manilow squeezes them all into a one-hourplus show. But you won’t just hear monster hits; you’ll also get the stories behind them. For instance, did you know Manilow changed “Mandy” from its original title, “Brandy”? Or the story behind “Looks Like We Made It”? The songs take on much broader significance once you’ve learned Manilow’s process. There’s so much to appreciate in this show, from the crazy talented band backing Manilow up to the cool 3D effect used midway through the show (everyone gets a pair of glasses upon entering the theater). The staging of “Copacabana,” the climax of the show, is particularly fun, with a large, extending platform lowering from the ceiling and attaching to the stage, allowing Manilow and his dancers to move and shimmy up above the crowd. It’s such an “only in Vegas” moment and proof of why Manilow meshes with this town perfectly. One of my personal favorite moments is when Manilow takes a breather, gives his band a break and heads over to a piano on the side of the stage, taking the audience through some of his most famous songs that many don’t realize he wrote—in particular, the “I’m Stuck on Band-Aid” jingle, as well as “Like a Good Neighbor, State Farm is there.” You’ll hear audible gasps from the audience, as well as plenty of laughter. (Manilow really gets into this bit and has some fun at his expense, which only endears him to his fans more.) And as Manilow belts out classics like “I Write the Songs,” “Could It Be Magic,” “Weekend in New England,” “It’s a Miracle” and “Can’t Smile Without You,” it’s stunning to sit back and realize that none of Manilow’s energy—or that amazing, singular voice—has been altered by time. Manilow may be 78, but you’d never know it by the way he commands the stage. The other star of this show is the audience—“Fanilows,” as they’ve become known. Throughout the performance, they’re hanging on every word, swaying back and forth in unison or dancing furiously, but always full of energy that is absolutely infectious. It’s truly one of the most exciting, enjoyable experiences in Las Vegas. You’ll be counting the days until Manilow returns and you can get that feeling again.

The blooming of tequila and mezcal extends to Las Vegas
Although Mexico produces a number of distilled agave products, the two it is known best for are mezcal and tequila. Both spirits are made from the agave plant, with tequila distilled solely from the blue agave plant in Tequila in the state of Jalisco (and a few other very limited areas) and mezcal from more than 30 agave varieties in nine Mexican states, primarily Oaxaca. Both harvest and use the heart of the plant (the piña), roasting it to get it ready to ferment, and it’s been done that way for hundreds of years. After it ferments with yeast and a few other ingredients, the spirit is distilled at least twice (by law), then bottled or aged. Many of the distilleries are small, although many are also owned by larger companies. Both tequila and mezcal are regulated by the Mexican government and the industry itself, with

the term “tequila” being claimed as intellectual property by the Mexican government in 1974. Mezcal, similarly, is governed by laws that certify the origin of the product. Tequila has a strong, pure taste, but the flavor can vary depending on where the blue agave is harvested, and how long and in what the tequila is aged. The three types are blanco (silver), reposado and añejo. Both añejo and reposado are aged, often in oak barrels sourced from U.S. and French spirit makers. That aging imparts a range of notes, from floral to woody or herbal. Mezcal also has a strong taste, and the flavor varies by type of agave used, the region grown and the roasting of the piña. Mezcal can also have a variety of flavoring agents added, although many do not. One of the most appreciated aspects of mezcal has to be the smokiness of

the spirit, imparted through the roasting process. In the last few years, both have made huge leaps in popularity worldwide, due both to the increased availability of the products (there are hundreds of brands of tequila and mezcal now available in the U.S.), and to the tireless efforts of its proponents. Well-known tequila brands such as Sauza and Herradura have been around more than 150 years, while Patrón was formed in 1989. Years later, George Clooney cofounded Casamigos, which became prized in the U.S. and eventually branched out into mezcal. In L.A., restaurateur Bricia Lopez is known for her passion for Oaxaca and its

culture. She owns Oaxacan in L.A. and helped popularize the mezcal in the last few years. In 2019, she came on board in Vegas to curate Mama Rabbit at Park MGM, which opened with one of the widest collections of tequila and mezcal in the country. A premium tequila brand in the market, Casa Dragones, was co-founded by CEO Bertha González Nieves, the first female master tequilera. Casa Dragones has only arrived in Vegas in the last few years, and it appears in many bars’ tequila lists. One of the most popular ways in Mexico to indulge in tequila is neat, and many people in the U.S. learned to drink it that way also, albeit with salt and lime standing by.

But Nieves advocates treating it as a sipping alcohol, much like a fine whiskey, that you might enjoy over the course of an evening. Last summer, Casa Dragones introduced its first añejo tequila, the Casa Dragones Barrel Blend, which is excellent as a sipping tequila. It is made from blue agave, aged in both French and American barrels and blended after aging. You can find it at locals favorite Más Por Favor Taqueria y Tequila. Of course, in Vegas pretty much every bar that serves cocktails has tequila-inspired drinks, from margaritas to the tequila sunrise of lyrical fame. But as the popularity of mezcal and tequila continue their meteoric rise, so have the number of drinks that use the spirits. Here are some of the places to try them out:
AREA15 At the Emporium Arcade in the immersive, art-based, interactive experience known as Area15, try the Flamango margarita, an tequila-based boozy slushie with Exotico blanco, Triple Sec, agave, lime and fresh mango. ARIA At Javier’s, indulge with the Marcos Mexican Margarita, with Tequila Casa Dragones blanco, Cointreau and fresh lime juice. PARK MGM Bring the friends for a night at Mama Rabbit and get a pitcher of the Valley Mule, with blanco tequila ginger, mint, lime and soda. DONNY OSMOND’S FIRST-EVER SOLO RESIDENCY show at Harrah’s Las Vegas has been a smash hit from opening night, revisiting screen and stage performances through various eras and celebrating his music and Vegas-style entertainment in general. He connects with his most dedicated fans by singing songs that made him famous as a child, then captivates the audience with a rap tracing through different decades of Donny. There’s nothing he can’t and won’t do to entertain, and his band, dancers and crew are all on the same page. First off, congratulations on the new show and the early extension you’ve secured to stay onstage through 2022. It seemed like this one would be a winner right off the bat, but you never know, right? I’ve been doing this a long time, and, yes, you never know. Did you like the part in my rap where I said we opened and closed in the very same night on Broadway? I wanted to put that in there to show that the successes are even sweeter when you have the failures and, boy, was that a failure. I love the part where I say, “I know what will save me: A guest spot on The Love Boat! I definitely wanted to talk about that “auto-rap-ography” portion of the show. The preparation for that must have been intense. It was huge. The memorization of that took a long time. When I came up with the idea, I called my director and asked, because we are trying to put six decades into 90 minutes, what do you think about me doing a rap? He started laughing and thought it was brilliant. My music director Keith Harrison assembled it all together. It’s almost 10 minutes long and gets faster and faster as we go. lot of material and stories and music into this show, and finding ways to appeal to different generations of fans. There’s a lot that’s gone into this. And I get some interesting reactions because some people, for example, had no idea I was the (singing) voice for Captain Li Shang in Mulan. And for others, that’s how they know me, and they have no idea about “Puppy Love,” or that I’m the peacock (from The Masked Singer). You also include a lot of new music from your latest album, Start Again, which sounds a lot like what we’re hearing on the radio right now. I set out to do a record that was relevant and I surrounded myself with a lot of amazing musicians and writers. The lyrical content of this album is really deep when you drill down to what I’m saying and the pictures I’m painting, but the music, I wanted it to be very relevant. I worked with people in circles with Bruno Mars to get that R&B feel, and I did this duet on the record with Charlie Wilson on the song I close the show with, “Let’s All Dance.” How different does this production feel from what you did for so long at the Flamingo? It’s different in the way that it’s everything I’ve done, and to me, it’s a celebration more than a show. I’ve had to reinvent myself so many different times, and with those reinventions comes new territory and mountains to climb. Opening with “Soldier of Love,” that was one of the biggest records at one of the most important times of my life, because that’s what got me back on the charts. Then we come back and do “Puppy Love,” which I’ll probably be known for, for the rest of my life. So it’s more than just a show, it’s like This Is Your Life, and it’s to relive it every night.

drawings and textured paintings, will be publicly debuted from Oct. 22-23, with a private VIP event for art collectors and celebrities on Oct. 21. From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Oct. 22-23, Simmons himself will be in the gallery. The art will remain in the gallery until it is purchased, said Nicholas Leone, CEO of Animazing Gallery, who
added that when he first saw Simmons’ work—a few sketches and one painting in Simmons’ Las Vegas home—he was struck by how intimate and distinctive the subjects were. “I think, beyond … the execution of what he’s doing, it’s the variety,” Leone said. “It’s powerful. It’s dynamic. It’s personal. And it’s just full of energy.”

Simmons said that although he has had more time during the pandemic to direct his focus toward the pieces on display, art itself has always been a familiar aspect of his life. “I’ve always secretly done this because I didn’t think anybody cared,” he said. “We all have our secret passions.” Growing up, Simmons said he loved to draw and usually stepped into a piece without a clear vision. Then he would follow his instincts to the end result. In the exhibited pieces, he primarily used paint and spackling paste—wall hole filler—to create splatter paint horizons and explosive scenery. Less conceptually, Gene Simmons ArtWorks also features a vibrantly colored portrait of his younger self and his mother. Simmons is a self-described comic book geek and enjoys the imperfect quality of the heroes in the story’s pages. (His favorite character is the Silver Surfer of Marvel Comics, he said.) But unlike the comics he adores, Simmons said he rarely has a linear approach or
methodology to his pieces. Not abiding by clear-cut regulations, especially as someone who is not a professionally trained artist, is a sentiment Simmons said he carries into his artwork today, including allowing visitors or potential buyers to touch the uneven surface of the pieces. “I don’t know what the rules are, and maybe that’s OK,” he said. “Maybe the most honest way of doing almost anything is not to lose that childlike innocence.” KISS will reinstate its End of the Road Tour Aug. 18 in Mansfield, Mass., after it

was cut short by the pandemic in March. “Being on stage is like Gestalt therapy,” Simmons said. “You get a chance to just get rid of those tensions and all the things you think are oh-so-important.” As for living in Las Vegas, Simmons says, “Vegas is great. It’s made up of actually very friendly, ethical and adventurous people.”

Tatum—who starred in both Magic Mike and sequel Magic Mike XXL—helped bring the movie to the stage as co-producer and director and it ran for more than two years before Hard Rock closed to reopen as Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. Now the show has a new permanent home at Sahara Las Vegas, where the theater was specifically designed for the show and give guests a truly immersive experience. “The show stars 13 professionally trained dancers performing routines and unique acts in front of, behind, above and all around our guests,” Dominick says. The theater is one of the things that sets this revue apart from others—guests don’t just stare at performances happening onstage—the men literally perform around the whole theater, which is designed to look like a two-story club. But what about the educating and celebrating I referred to earlier? Magic Mike Live aims to empower women, to teach women about what they deserve and what they should want from a partner. The show also makes it a point to celebrate females—from head to toe, from mind to heart. But the show is not all about “class-is-in-session” moments; don’t doubt that Magic Mike Live
is packed with all the sweaty, shirtless and sexually charged vignettes you could want. Combined with some of the hottest hits, impressive dance numbers show off all the guys’ phenomenal dancing skills while they make moves that’ll make the most liberal
of women blush. (In a nice touch, some of the guys perform live music numbers with instruments, too.) The whole theater continually erupts with shrieks of delight and thunderous applause after each number; fake dollar bills are provided so you can make it rain for some of your favorite dancers. “The creatives of the show wanted to create a safe space for women to come to when they come to Vegas,” Dominick says. “They want women to feel empowered and loved after leaving our performance. It’s also a place for women to just go and have a good time. There are so many things to take away from the show after watching it but ultimately, I just hope everyone has a great time.” And this writer can say that she most definitely did. Sahara Las Vegas
