From the Editor Expect the Unexpected

No matter how well you think you know this town, it continually finds ways to surprise you. That’s a huge part of why so many tourists keep coming back for more. Think about it this way: Twenty years ago, you could enjoy the magic of Siegfried & Roy; 10 years ago, you’d be enjoying the pipes of Celine Dion and Elton John and this year, you’re buying your tickets for Lady Gaga and Pitbull. That’s just live performances! The same goes for production shows, restaurants, nightlife and much more. It’s also what makes working at Las Vegas Magazine so enjoyable; our staff gets the pleasure of introducing you to these exciting additions on a weekly basis. This week’s issue is a perfect example of that, starting with editor at large Brock Radke’s feature on the Strip’s newest performer: Donny Osmond, returning as a solo act after performing here for 11 years with sister Marie (“A Real Crowd-Pleaser,” p. 32). Even if you saw Donny & Marie at Flamingo several times over the years, trust us: His Harrah’s show is going to surprise you in ways you didn’t see coming. What’s in a Name? Whether you are looking for traditional Chinese cuisine, or want a little twist, you’ll find it at Mr Chow. The Vegas incarnation of the famous chain of restaurants (formed by Michael Chow beginning in the ’60s), incorporates modern sensibilities in décor and menu. The dining area features an enormous chandelier that acts as an art installation, periodically turning the piece into a light show (you really need to see this). The menu plays with traditional dishes and more modern takes on those, with sections such as Hors D’Oeuvres, From the Sky, From the Land and From the Sea, and the playful Pasta section, where you’ll find handmade Beijing noodles, billed as being introduced to the West by Mr Chow in 1968, plus pot stickers, Jade water dumplings and signature squid ink rice noodles. Best bets on the rest of the menu include Gamblers Duck with steamed pancakes and plum sauce; dressed Dungeness crab in a fluffy bed of egg whites; crispy beef; drunken fish and green prawns. For the whole experience, get a prix fixe Beijing Duck dinner, which is roasted to order. –Nina King

A Wild West Romp

Show entertains in the most inappropriate, delightful way You want to take a trip to the naughty side of the Wild West? The raunchy, racy, rambunctious ride that is Atomic Saloon Show invites guests to leave inhibitions in the desert dust and boot-scoot into a world of talent, comedy and off-the-wall fun. Cursing? It’s got that—lots of that, like realdown-and-dirty stuff that would make even Richard Pryor and George Carlin blush. Comedy? You’ll split your pants and possibly spew out your drink from laughing so hard. Talent? You’ll be up to your teeth in it. Your host for the evening, and proprietor of the “saloon,” is Boozy Skunkton. Her bright red hair isn’t the only thing that’s fired up—her acerbic tongue seems to get her in trouble at every turn;

but she has an indescribable charm. Another charmer in the show is singing cowboy Blue Jackson, who uses his guitar to serenade with the most inappropriate lyrics and dance moves. When it comes to physical talents, the audience is treated to a grab bag of vignettes. Ever seen someone hula hoop? How about hula hooping with dozens of hoops? Aerial acts amaze with both solo and duo performances. Feats of strength push the limits, with a duo demonstrating how muscle and balance can create amazing poses. Pole dancing? Yup, that’s here, too. The theater in the round brings to the stage some slapstick moments—one involving some demure nuns who perform some quite shocking but hysterical acts with ping pong balls. And,

Boozy’s cousins perform a kind-of rap number that continually elicits laughter and applause from the audience. The ending of this Wild West hoedown is an all-out saloon brawl with the entire cast that seems to go on forever—but at the same time you don’t want it to end. Atomic Saloon Show should also be lauded for its venue. Getting into the theater is reminiscent of winding your way on the way to a Disneyland ride, and once you get to the main room, you’re immersed in a different world. The re-created saloon has multiple bars (you can grab specially created cocktails before and during the show), VIP booths and seating on a second level, so you can look down on all the action. –Kiko Miyasato

All in the Fingers Those who followed Shin Lim’s journey on America’s Got Talent know his story very well by now: He was training to be a classical pianist, but because of carpal tunnel syndrome, he had to choose between the piano and magic. Most who have had the pleasure of seeing him perform must believe he made the right decision. It’s a safe bet to say that Lim’s residency at The Mirage is one of the hottest on the Las Vegas Strip, and when you add AGT competitor and mentalist Colin Cloud into the mix, you have a show that just can’t miss. Lim and Cloud take turns entertaining the audience; there’s plenty of audience participation when Cloud comes out, and he’s the perfect complement to Lim’s awe-inspiring magic, helping to keep the crowd laughing and loose. His is a different kind of magic than Lim, but it’s no less impressive. But it’s Lim that truly steals the show, with lightning-fast sleight-of-hand that will make you rethink that whole blinking thing. –Ken Miller The Mirage, 800.745.3000 Ticketmaster

A Classic Perfected How many times have you watched an episode of Hell’s Kitchen and heard Gordon Ramsay scream at the Red or Blue team: “This fish is (expletive) still swimming!” What always ends up happening is that the chef then returns with a perfectly cooked piece of fish, and all you can think is, “Man, I really want some fish right now!” Lucky for you, Ramsay offers that perfectly cooked cod—and plenty more—at Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips.

You can enjoy the classic British coupling with tartar sauce, but Ramsay also offers other dipping options, including curry and mango, sriracha aioli and Dijon mayonnaise. Still hungry? Add on shrimp, chicken or sausage. And there’s a secret combo: Just ask for the “G Spot” and get a combo of fish, chicken and shrimp. Some Las Vegas hotels have pretty cool front yards. Bellagio has its iconic fountains and The Venetian has its faux canals. And while those sights are impressive, they don’t hold a candle to the original, free large-scale entertainment attraction—the fire-spewing volcano in front of The Mirage. For more than 30 years, the volcano has attracted children and adults alike with its booming explosions, fireballs, faux lava and flames that are so hot you can practically feel them across the boulevard. French Twist

Paris restaurant thrills diners “Would you like a view with your meal, mademoiselle? Please, follow me.” That may not be exactly the script when you step up to the host stand at Eiffel Tower Restaurant, but it surely can’t be far off. The French restaurant, slightly above the base of the Eiffel Tower at Paris, has spectacular views of the Fountains of Bellagio and of Las Vegas Boulevard. However, a peek at the menu will yield great views, too, of dishes like smoked salmon; steak tartare; slow-braised smoked pork belly; and warm foie gras—and those are just the appetizers. Don’t forget to order a glass of wine or a cocktail like the Eiffel Affair, with Stoli Blue-

beri vodka, macerated berries, Boudier crème de cassis, Combier orange liqueur, rose nectar and Crémant D’Alsace brut sparkling wine. And to top it off, try a tasting of Osetra caviar. For a main course, enjoy whole boneless Dover sole, roasted Colorado rack of lamb, or an individual beef Wellington. There are plenty of steaks as well, from a Rossini-style filet mignon, served with foie gras and a truffle sauce, to Prime New York aged steak. Add Maine lobster or extra sauces on for even more oomph. The restaurant also offers options for vegetarians, like summer vegetables with wild mushrooms, a quail egg and romesco sauce. Dishes

like those tend to change seasonally, so ask your server what’s available. Desserts are suitably decadent here, with souffles being among the best, with flavors like Valrhona chocolate, Grand Marnier, Sicilian pistachio and lemon blueberry. You can get other sweet treats like crème brulée, chocolate-hazelnut cake and macarons, too. Bear Crossing Aria is known for the many art pieces installed throughout, and taking a stroll around the resort is something that is worth repeating, whether it’s on the same trip or not. Recently, artist Paola Pivi brought her We Are the Baby Gang exhibit to the hotel lobby at Aria, installing 51 fluorescent baby bears in various scenes across the area. The bears, created out of bright neon colors and tons of feathers, are designed to excite a sense of whimsy with vignettes of bears in yoga poses floating through the air and gazing into pools. But there is also a deeper purpose to the installation, and that is to draw attention to the plight of polar bears in the wild, whose habitat is being reduced and destroyed by climate change. “I am excited to bring my beautiful divas to Las Vegas,” said Pivi in a release. “Aria’s gorgeous lobby with its soaring ceilings and natural light is a perfect canvas to create this colorful world of polar bears to showcase the significance of these animals and our deep connection with them.” –Nina King

Delicious Heritage Best Friend’s menu is a nod to Roy Choi’s Korean heritage, and just in case you weren’t sure Choi is dedicated to making this experience as fun as possible, just take a look at some of his menu titles. Start with “Dranks,” which includes a highball with Suntori Toki blended whiskey, fancy soda water and citrus, and the Salty Dog, featuring Ketel One Botanical Rose and Grapefruit vodka, grapefruit and pink peppercorn. Then move over to “Vegas

Sh*t,” which includes options found only in Las Vegas. Choose from a dry-aged tomahawk, served with gochujang maître d’hotel butter, or the grilled whole fish, served with jalapeño ponzu and garlic veggies. Aria restaurant celebrates Taiwan’s cuisine On your way into Din Tai Fung, you’ll pass through a huge dining room with soaring windows that showcase a green vista, lots of wood throughout and an enormous water feature right in the center of the restaurant. This, along with a cheerful greeting from the Taiwanese dumpling house mascot, immediately puts you in an upbeat frame of mind. Drinks here range from a seemingly mild pear and lychee martini to the stronger DTF Old-Fashioned, with Japanese whiskey and Taiwanese oolong tea. For a nice, delicious twist, the spiced boba combines Absolut vanilla, Kahlua, black tea, cream, cinnamon and boba, perfect for a sweeter sip. Ask your server to

check on the latest additions to this menu as it does change seasonally. Ordering here is on a checklist-style system, where you choose the dumplings and buns you want to share. Good choices are the shrimp and kurobuta pork shao mai; Jidori chicken; and vegan dumplings, the latter stuffed with shitake and wood ear mushrooms, glass noodles and bean curd. The plump buns come in several options, like kurobuta pork, Jidori chicken and oyster mushroom buns, and a vegan version stuffed with the same mix you’ll find in the dumplings. Get wontons and xiao long bao varieties, too. It seems like the choices are endless. If you’d prefer, choose soups, noodles or entrées instead

of dumplings only. The vegan wonton soup is light and delicate in kombu broth. The hot sour pork soup is packed with tons of ingredients. There are also noodles with different types of toppings, from pickled mustard greens and shredded kurobata pork to diced beef and Szechuan peppers. For dessert, the chocolate and mochi xiao long bao is pretty amazing, with a layer of mochi wrapped around chocolate. The red bean bun pulls in a completely different flavor, but it’s also worth the order. No Light, Just Right Walk into the lobby at Blackout Dining in the Dark, and you’ll be walking into an adventure for the senses; well, except for the sense of sight. In this unique dining experience, patrons first make a series of choices that help guide the chef into the creation of your meal (Are you a fan of sweet? Savory? Spicy?). Then they are led through an area that acts much like an airlock, but just for light, and into the completely dark dining room. You’ll get a complete, multicourse meal here, with the emphasis on really using those senses to try to figure out what you have eaten. You won’t be allowed to take your phone or electronics in, so dine with someone you can talk to for a whole meal without interruption. Hero Time! Have you ever fantasized about being a government operative or an action hero? Well, put on your spy shoes and jump on FLY LINQ Zipline for an adventure. Start near Las Vegas Boulevard from a tower that’s 12 stories up. You’ll reach speeds that approach 35 mph. Zoom over the heads of crowds of people, departing as silently as you arrived. A Sweet Escape I’ve said it many times to people who have visited me in Las Vegas, “If you’re on the Strip and you’re a sweets lover, you’ll find nirvana at Hershey’s Chocolate World at New York-New York.” The two-story destination has all the Hershey’s candy products on the market, huge sections of different varieties of Reese’s, Jolly Ranchers, Hershey’s Kisses, the list goes on and on. Michael Shaw

GM is right where he wants to be Before Michael Shaw moved here in 2017, the Erie, Penn., native had never even been to Las Vegas—and now he’s the general manager for one of the coolest spots in town, Beerhaus at The Park. “I only knew what Vegas was from TV, movies, magazines, but I knew it was the mecca of the hospitality industry,” Shaw says. “And hospitality was an industry that I always knew I wanted to be a part of.” In fact, after high school Shaw worked his way up from busser and server to bartender and, by 2013, management roles at various corporate restaurants in his hometown. Two years before he moved to Vegas he became manager of Lavery Brewing Company in Erie, an almost serendipitous move, because now he’s helping to run Beerhaus. Shaw joined Beerhaus in March 2018 as the assistant manager, and by March of this year he was made general manager. “I’m a huge hockey fan and Beerhaus is just yards away

from T-Mobile Arena where the Golden Knights play,” he says. “Plus, managing a brewery, it just seemed like the perfect fit.” Not only does Shaw help run the German beer hall-inspired venue, “My role here is to make sure that I give my staff and my managers the tools they need to succeed,” he says. “But the favorite part of my job is getting to know our guests. I’ve always been friendly—I’m Irish, so I’ve always had the gift of gab.” It also worked out perfectly that Shaw’s favorite drink of choice is beer. “I’ve always had this quote when someone asks me what my favorite beer is: ‘Whatever beer I have in my hand,’ or ‘I hope I haven’t found it yet,’ because I’m always willing to try something new,” he says. Surrounded by beer and being in the world’s top city for hospitality, what more could Shaw want? “It’s amazing to be here—I feel very lucky and fortunate,” he says. “I should have come out here sooner!” –Kiko Miyasato

When you arrive at Mott 32, you may be hard put to conceal the squeal of delight that threatens to break out. The bar area here is pretty darned cool, with a design incorporating custom wallpaper, ropes, chains and nets hanging from the ceiling for larger parties, with tables surrounding the room in front of the large bar. It’s fabulous for getting a handcrafted cocktail with top-shelf ingredients, or a tasty beer, like the Hitachino Nest espresso stout out of Japan, prior to dinner.

Braised eggplant also finds itself in that elevated status and is silky-smooth, without the overwhelming oiliness you might find in similar dishes. Although it is tempting to skip dessert after such a fulfilling meal, that would be a travesty. The Double Boiled Imperial Bird’s Nest Soup, with rock sugar or apricot seed juice, will fulfill your dessert desires for at least a year. But if you want to go for something a little less high-powered, order the coconut ice cream with pomelo and grapefruit, with honeycomb all around the edges. Oh, so delicious.

Back on the Strip, the always popular Beerhaus (702.692.2337) at The Park will definitely fill up with hockey fans when Vegas Golden Knights games resume this month at nearby T-Mobile Arena. A big part of this early success is the fact that no one caters to their audience the way Osmond does, and you can tell by looking around the showroom that he has one of most dedicated and loyal followings around. When Rod Stewart takes the stage at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace this week (Oct. 6, 8-9), it represents two important milestones: a.) it’s the first time he’s set foot on a Las Vegas stage since the pandemic shut down the Strip; b.) it will be almost 10 years to the day since his residency, Rod Stewart: The Hits, premiered in Sin City. In both cases, it’s cause for serious celebration by Stewart’s legion of fans, who span the generations and genres. Stewart has spent his career churning out hit after hit, not only with groups but also as a solo artist—his discography now spans 31 solo albums (including 16 singles that cracked the U.S. top 10), meaning he has a deep well from which to draw for any given show, and trust us—you will definitely hear the hits. Those who doubt Stewart can still deliver at 76 will be quickly silenced once he takes the mic to belt out classics like “The First Cut Is the Deepest,” “Maggie May,” “Every Picture Tells a Story” and “You’re In My Heart (The Final Acclaim).” His

energy level is infectious, as is his sense of humor and audience interaction. (At one point, Sir Rod was kicking soccer balls into the crowd, a nod to his early years as a footballer for his school’s team, but such antics were deemed a little risky, so he has since stopped.) It’s hard to pick the strongest creative period of Stewart’s career. His work with The Jeff Beck Group and the The Faces in the ’60s and ’70s helped shape him into the solo rocker who catapulted to stardom with the release of 1971’s Every Picture Tells a Story, and Stewart would remain a prominent force throughout that decade with monster, seductive hits like “Tonight’s the Night,” “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” and “Hot Legs.” He continued his streak of hits in the ’80s and ’90s with “Passion,” “Infatuation,” “Baby Jane,” “Young Turks,” “Some Guys Have All the Luck,” “Downtown Train” and “Rhythm of My Heart.”

Subsequent years saw him inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, set a Guinness world record for the largest free concert attendance in history (3.5 million people on Copacabana Beach in Rio) and sell out venues as part of his Out of Order Tour throughout the Americas. By the new millennium, Stewart changed things up in a way no one expected, covering the Great American Songbook through multiple albums and equaling his sales from the 1970s in the process. He’s known as much to rockers as he is to blue hairs, a claim few entertainers can make. What makes Stewart’s achievements truly extraordinary is that he has compromised nothing in the process—he remains a true original in every way, which is why every performer under the sun has wanted to work with him over the years—everyone from Stevie Nicks and Stevie Wonder to Dolly Parton, Diana Ross and Elton John. The word “legend” is thrown around too easily these days, but in Stewart’s case it’s a no-brainer.

Although many times watching football means nothing more than plopping yourself down on the couch in front of the TV with a beer and some chips, in Vegas you can up your viewing experience, and if do you want chips and beer, you can up that, too. It’s medieval fun at Tournament of Kings’ dinner-and-a-show experience ou’d be hard-pressed to find another show in town where you can really let loose, be rowdy and be loud—all in the name of fun. Tournament of Kings, which returned to the Strip after being closed due to the pandemic last year, thankfully resumed its schedule of six nights a week. The show, which is family friendly but also a great time for a group of adults, is quite the theatrical delight,

providing guests with a chance to celebrate all things medieval, including King Arthur, Prince Christopher and the Knights of the Round Table. The story starts with the majestic wizard Merlin coming out into the theater and welcoming the audience to the Tournament of Kings—an evening where various countries gather to cheer on their kings as they compete in feats of strength and knighthood.

Inside the 900-seat theater in the round, your seat for the evening assigns you to a country—Russia, Ireland, Spain, Austria, France or Hungary. Some might even be seated in the fire-wizard section—this is where you’ll be rooting for the bad guy, the evil Mordred! It’s you and your section’s job to holler and scream for your king as he and his noble steed participate in various contests like javelin throwing and jousting. During the tournament, guests feast on a multicourse dinner of roasted, seasoned Cornish game hen, lemon pepper roasted

potatoes, corn on the cob, a dinner roll and an apple square pastry for dessert. The fun part is being able to dig in and eat everything with your hands, without those weird looks from your neighbor. (Of course, silverware is available.) But just as the celebration gets underway, the beautiful maidens seduce with their dance and the kings continue their fantastic feats, darkness falls over the theater as the evil fire wizard descends into the arena. With blazing fireballs and his minions following, a great battle ensues where Prince Christopher must avenge his father’s death. Joining the prince, all the knights must now band together to help defeat evil.

Stunning visual effects and pyrotechnics impress and truly heighten the theatrical experience. And the show’s costumes also add to the dazzling experience—ornate gowns, tournament attire and even Merlin’s majestic robe were all specially created by designer Frederick Pineau known for his costuming for French operas. Tournament of Kings also features original music and score by famed composer Scot Rammer. Banging your tankards, shouting for good and evil and joining in song and merriment is continuously encouraged throughout the entire show. The long-running Las Vegas show is nonstop action that keeps guests entertained from start to finish.
