From the Editor Shining a Spotlight

While enjoying the various forms of entertainment that Las Vegas provides, you may sometimes wonder how it all comes together. After all, there are so many moving pieces to every event you attend: Boxing matches, music festivals, concerts, production shows and much more. That’s what we decided to dedicate this issue of Las Vegas Magazine to—giving credit where credit is due for those behind the amazing events that keep visitors like you coming back for more. Associate editor Kiko Miyasato interviewed five entertainment executives with MGM Resorts International, all of them women and all of them a serious force to be reckoned with (“Wonder Women,” p. 30). The profiles contained within this issue are inspirational, funny, and at times emotional, but all are absolute must-reads. Their jobs are in no way easy, but all are extremely rewarding. Then it’s time to enjoy some of that entertainment! Fans of dancing will definitely want to catch the Jabbawockeez at MGM Grand (“Some Serious Moves,” p. 8), while fans of comedy will love Piff the Magic Dragon at Flamingo (“Creature Comforts,” p. 11). Like a good mentalist show? Banachek Mind Games Live, which recently premiered at The STRAT, fits that bill perfectly (“Life of the Mind,” p. 14), while Magic Mike Live at Sahara Las Vegas

(“Raining Men,” p. 12), Thunder From Down Under at Excalibur (“Awesome Aussies,” p. 10) and RuPaul’s Drag Race Live! at Flamingo (“From TV to Stage,” p. 17) are the perfect shows for large groups—preferably those that have had a few drinks first. But here at Las Vegas Magazine, our mission is to give you far more than just entertainment options. That Celebrity Feeling Hail, Caesar! Well, hail Caesar salad. At Carbone, get a tableside experience when you start off a meal with the tasty Caesar salad (although a nice classic cocktail like the Manhattan or a daiquiri also makes for a perfect beginning). That luxurious tableside service just goes so well with the gorgeous surroundings, where plush nooks create a secluded vibe and a snazzy playlist harks back to an old-school Italian restaurant. You might also be seated in a cushy booth, which makes you feel like a celebrity. Forgo the salad, and you’ll undoubtedly want to try the Piemontese carpaccio, octopus pizzaiolo with peppers or a comforting minestrone instead. If you wish for a pasta dish, you’ll love the spaghetti puttanesca or fettucine con funghi. Carbone also features an impressive lineup of fish and meats, like bass Alison, a specialty of the restaurant, veal marsala and veal Parmesan, chicken scarpariello, a double lamb chop, and bone-in New York Strip. Party With a Purpose Vegas has played host to many an over-thetop event through the years, but one of the wildest has been the AFAN Black & White Party, where Vegas comes together to support adults and children affected by HIV. The event celebrates its 35th anniversary on Sept. 25 this year, and every year, the outfits worn by both entertainers and guests get more detailed and imaginative, worthy alone of the price of admission. A huge range of Vegas performers volunteer

their time and services, making sure the entertainment is top-notch. Aid for AIDS of Nevada has been providing help for the community since 1984, including food and health programs, client services, prevention and education services. If you’ve never been to an all-male revue before, you might want to start at Thunder From Down Under, arguably the hottest show on the Las Vegas Strip at the moment, featuring a wide array of Australian dancers who fulfill the audiences’ various fantasies. Hot cowboys? Check. Hunky firemen? Check? Sexy vampires? Yep, they’ve got those, too! Creature Comforts

Magician delights with combo of wit and whimsy One thing we know for sure about Piff the Magic Dragon: He loves food. And not those fair maidens who are in dire need of saving by brave knights, no. Piff loves sandwiches, bananas … just about any finger food he can get his hands on. He’s also constantly pitching things for sale (as if a dragon would ever need a financial assist by anyone)—when one of his signature illusions is over, there he is, offering the unsuspecting fan a souvenir … for a small fee. Yes, these are very undragon-like characteristics, but as you quickly discover at a Piff the Magic Dragon show, there’s no creature—or performer—quite like him.

The acerbic Piff, aka John van der Put, dressed head to toe in a very unconvincing dragon costume, is rarely without his companion, Mr. Piffles, a Chihuahua who is about as chill as you’ve ever seen a canine; it often seems he’s just putting up with Piff, patiently waiting until he gets his next dragon treat. (Yes, he’s dressed up in a costume, too!) Together, they bring audience members onstage for some clowning around, Piff always reminding everyone how much of a catch he is for some lucky damsel (and how most of them haven’t got a chance with him).

Fans will be pleased to know that, even though Piff’s general demeanor appears to be one of indifference, he’s always adding new elements to his hit show on the Las Vegas Strip, involving a magical “bush” that heals broken relationships. We could go into more detail, but … you really have to see this one to appreciate it. In everything, Piff is ably assisted by showgirl Jade Simone, ever-smiling and ever-limber, performing the splits with absolute ease. Don’t miss your chance to catch Piff while he’s here—seriously, you don’t want a dragon mad at you, especially a sarcastic one. –Ken Miller

Power of Presentation Taste and presentation are put into every plate that comes from the kitchen of Michael Mina. The chef’s eponymous restaurant is a practice in modern cooking techniques combined with global influences, all concentrated on fresh seafood and the cuisines of Japan, the Mediterranean and France. Tableside preparations and grand entrances of signature dishes like Mina’s famed lobster pot pie are de rigueur here. But a must-try is fan favorite caviar parfait (pictured)—or start with the bright-pink, melt-in-your-mouth ahi tuna tartare served with a habanero-infused sesame oil. Main options address both land and sea, with flavorful, fresh-steamed Icelandic halibut in coconut-corn broth, phyllo-crusted sole in a mustard beurre blanc, and the impressive “pepper steak,” made with your choice of a 12-ounce New York Strip or 8-ounce filet mignon. For a longer, more decadent tour of Mina’s cooking capabilities, opt for one of his two seven-course tasting menus—the Seasons of Mina tasting menu or the Signature tasting menu. –Kiko Miyasato

Ready to Be an Agent? Are you a true Marvel fan? Test your knowledge about that universe at Marvel Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N., where you’ll be reminded of the origin stories of everyone from Captain America to Thor. You’ll also find a ton of info about each hero, and may glean details you had no clue about before. Take a gander at Captain America’s shield and motorcycle and several of the Iron Man costumes featured in the movies, as well as Hawkeye and Black Widow.

Get Your Motor Running

Facility features wide assortment of racing options It’s quite a way from the lights and glamour of the Strip, but SpeedVegas, which sits on Las Vegas Boulevard just a bit south of the M Resort, is no less one of the shining jewels of the Las Vegas entertainment scene. In just a few short years, it’s distinguished itself among racing fans for offering every kind of racing experience you can imagine. It’s the only racing facility in Southern Nevada to include both a racing course and a world-class dirt track (and a spot where you can do all the doughnuts you want in the muscle car of your choice!). Make sure you get here early, because you’re going to want to experience everything that’s offered. Obviously, there’s the main event: The 1.5-mile racing course with hairpin turns, chicanes and

straightaways, upon which you can race your choice of elite machine (foreign cars like Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Porsches, American muscle cars like the Shelby GT500 and Corvette C8 Z51, and street racers like the Acura NSX) for as many laps as you want. And don’t fret about safety here—SpeedVegas maintains a rigorous cleaning schedule, including UVC lightbox sanitation and disinfecting systems for helmets. Acrylic glass shield protectors are used in every vehicle, and all high-touch surfaces and highly trafficked areas (like the clubhouse, cars and back-of-house areas) are constantly sanitized. In addition, all cars are driven with the windows down to ensure a constant supply of fresh air.

The fun continues on the facility’s custom-built, 1.4-mile dirt track, the only one of its kind in Las Vegas. Odds are this is new territory for most visitors to the Las Vegas Valley, and it’s thrilling: After a quick video and some basic instruction, you take to the course in your 6100 class custom-built truck. As you wheel this state-of-the-art off-road vehicle across the twists, turns and jumps of the course, you’ll find yourself whooping and hollering with every bit of air you take. Steak in the Game Although Ruth’s Chris Steak House is a chain restaurant, dining there always feels unique, especially when that experience is in Las Vegas. Part of it has to do with the ambience, for the restaurant’s floor-to-ceiling windows offer incredible views of Caesars Palace, which is a wonderful backdrop. Start your meal with a specialty cocktail like the refreshing French Quarter 75, a mix of gin, St-Germain, prosecco and lemon. Then it’s time for some comforting appetizers, like the blue crab cakes served with a sizzling lemon butter or the chilled seafood tower stacked with Maine lobster, Alaskan king crab legs, jumbo shrimp and lump blue crab. But you’re likely visiting Ruth’s Chris because of the steaks, and you can’t go wrong with an 11-ounce filet, 16-ounce New York strip, or the tomahawk (pictured), all of which are broiled and served sizzling on a 500-degree plate. Life of the Mind The first thing Banachek tells you before he begins blowing your mind with his psychic feats is that he doesn’t use plants, hidden microphones or hidden cameras (he’s actually offered up quite a large sum for anyone who can prove him wrong). He also takes great care to let everyone know that he isn’t a psychic; rather, he uses his five senses and a bit of what he calls “magic.” Whatever it is that Banachek uses during the course of Banachek’s Mind Games

Live, he’s using it correctly whether it’s guessing numbers on a hundred-dollar bill or driver’s license, he’s rarely ever wrong. But Banachek takes things a step further, with some illusions that will have even those mere feet from him gasping with wonder. It’s a little dizzying, the sheer variety of spirits you can enjoy at Mama Rabbit, the nightlife spot inside Park MGM. It’s named for Mayahuel, a Mesoamerican fertility goddess with many origin tales, one of which references rabbits that she fed tequila and mezcal, who eventually transform into the agave plant. Celebrity chef goes over the top at Linq restaurant Life’s a party in Las Vegas. And there’s no celebrity chef more synonymous with that word than Guy Fieri, a man who celebrates the joys of eating everywhere he goes (and he goes everywhere, demonstrated on shows like Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives). And he wants to help you celebrate while you’re in town at his restaurant Guy Fieri’s Vegas Kitchen & Bar. The space itself puts you in a festive mood— an airy space that pops with color, highlighted by brick walls and wood floors. You’ll be planning your cocktail order before you even sit down, and the options here are just as you’d expect at a Fieri restaurant—fun and over the top. If you’re

with a larger group, try one of his “Party Bowlas,” libations served in a large bowl. The Gone Fishing combines Absolut Raspberri vodka, blue Curacao, triple sec, coconut water, lemonade … and Swedish Fish! From there, share some apps with your tablemates. A huge fan favorite is the Trash Can Nachos, delivered in a large metal pitcher with a retractable bottom. They spill out onto your plate, piled high with house-smoked pork, SMC (super-melty cheese), pickled red onions and much more. We also recommend the jalapeño pig poppers, stuffed with andouille sausage and cheese, and wrapped in maple bacon and glazed

with Fieri’s signature bourbon brown sugar barbecue sauce. Save some room for a burger! The bacon mac ’n’ cheeseburger is a revelation, topped with sixcheese mac ’n’ cheese, onion straws, applewood bacon, SMC and “donkey sauce.” (Want the recipe? The classic Flamingo Showroom is the home of vibrant, music and fashion-focused spectacle RuPaul’s Drag Race Live!, directed by RuPaul and Jamal Sims and produced by World of Wonder, the same team behind the hit TV show. It expands on that tried-and-true TV format with the competing queens showing off their skills in lip-sync, on the dance floor and on the runway, with the eye-popping performances bolstered by stunning sets and party-ready soundtrack. Asia O’Hara, one of six stunning queens anchoring the cast, serves as host. Kameron Michaels, Derrick Barry, Naomi Smalls, Vanessa “Vanjie” Mateo and Yvie Oddly take turns displaying their distinct skills and style. (The lineup is subject to change.) It’s a world that’s very welcoming and empowering. But above all else, it’s a celebration of drag. Now, with the popularity of the TV show helping to spread drag culture to a greater audience, this spectacular show seems like the perfect event to boost the entertainment comeback in Las Vegas. –Brock Radke

Fired-Up Flavors When the Monte Carlo transformed into Park MGM several years ago, longtime locals favorite Diablo’s Cantina was displaced. Fortunately for the Mexican restaurant’s many fans, it found a new home at Luxor (it’s even got a second at The Mirage now). So, what was it about Diablo’s that people missed so much? The guac, the nachos (seriously one of the best iterations you will ever come across), the vixen chicken and

shrimp, beef and barbacoa enchiladas, and, of course, charismatic chef Saul Ortiz. Sides like Mexico City street corn, black beans and fried plantains bring even more flavor. Plenty of margaritas will cool you off (unless you want it spicy, because those versions are available); the Chupacabra features mezcal and cilantro for a smoky sip. A piano-playing, comedy-singing star Momma gave her music. Daddy gave her comedy. Sarah Hester Ross takes those two creative talents and combines them to make up her performances as a dueling piano player at The Bar at Times Square at New York-New York. It was a huge deal when the Florida native got hired, she says. “Players come to this room and hold on to the job for life because it’s one of the best in the country, most famous, most well known. They haven’t had a female in a long time. It’s mostly men; bit of a sausage fest. I’m the only female full-time dueler.” But Hester Ross is more than a piano bar entertainer. “I’m a musical comedian,” she says. “I like to say I’m the piano-playing Bette Midler.” She’s been studying and performing music almost her whole life, starting out as a vocal performance major in college and, after graduation, working at Orlando theme parks like Universal Studios. Hester Ross was also very active in community theater, combining her

singing and acting talents. About 10 years ago, she began playing piano professionally, working as a dueling piano player in Orlando. “There’s a piano bar circuit, kinda like the comedy circuit that hires traveling players,” Hester Ross says. “I toured all around the U.S and Canada, working the bars, bucking up on my piano skills and song repertoire.” When her skills were sharpened, she joined The Bar at Times Square in 2019. “People come to Vegas with a lack of inhibition,” she says. “So as entertainers in this bar, there’s definitely adult material. It gets wild and loud. We’re encouraging people to sing and drink and dance—we’re creating an unforgettable party atmosphere.” Hester Ross is also continuing to create a legacy for herself. “I want to get into TV and writing. I have very, very big dreams,” she says. “Dueling pianos I love, but I want to do a lot more. Music and comedy, they’re my passions, and I’m not stopping here.” –Kiko Miyasato

restaurant at MGM Grand, a magnificent, opulent experience that, if money is no object, will create memories to last a lifetime. The first thing you’ll notice upon entering is the immaculately appointed dining room,

punctuated by ornate, velvet banquettes, beautiful lighting, a stunning chandelier, white linen tablecloths, a lush garden terrace and marble flooring. It feels almost like a classic, upscale brownstone home you’d find in the

Upper West Side of New York City. There’s also a small bar at the entrance, allowing you to enjoy a cocktail and conversation before moving into the main dining room. Everything feels upscale and decadent here, and that extends to the service—you’ll be pampered by a large staff, from your server to the sommelier to the various others you’ll meet during your experience. The one thing to remember at Joël Robuchon is that only two things are constant: A ridiculously addictive bread-and-butter cart, which comes by your table at regular intervals to tempt you with its selection, and a dessert cart, which comes by at the end of your meal with a dizzying array of sweets. Other than that, the menu at Joël Robuchon is always changing (when making your reservation, which is strongly recommended, you might want to inquire as to exactly what dishes will be available when you arrive). There are many different ways to dine here, depending on your appetite and budget. You can opt to go light by ordering one main course and one dessert, slightly more ambitious with two appetizers, two entrées and one dessert, or you can go all out with an epic sampling of the entire tasting menu (the number of courses will vary as the menu changes). At press time, some of the selections available included Le Caviar Imperial, an appetizer served in a crustacean gelée and dotted with cauliflower purée. It’s full of flavor and very light, preparing your palate for more.

Seafood fans will be in absolute heaven here. Le Homard du Maine features Maine lobster in a thinly sliced turnip with sweet and sour dressing, while Le Crevette Rose combines rose shrimp with bonito tuna and kombu. You’ll also enjoy one of the best scallops ever with La Noix de Saint Jacques, where they’re seared in green curry with young leeks. And one of the real stars here is

La Saint-Pierre, a John Dory fish fillet with shiso leaf tempura and squid ink risotto. Even the dessert menu is a revelation. L’Ananas is a coconut mousse with lemon cream and pineapple lime compote, Le Caramel features popcorn Chantilly and soft salted caramel, and Le Fruit de la Passion combines mango and passion fruit sorbet with a crunchy meringue.

That’s why a new brunch-all-week menu was just unveiled, available every day until 3 p.m. Choose from decadent dishes like chicken and waffles, bananas Foster pancakes, truffled shrimp and grits or the popular lobster salad croissant to complement bottomless mimosas. For authentic flavors from the Far East, head to China Mama (702.873.1977), one of the all-time greats in the city’s Chinatown district along Spring Mountain Road. Pan-fried pork bao buns and juicy pork soup dumplings are among the specialties here, each bite so delicious and memorable they’re worth the visit alone. But the menu is expansive so come hungry and eat like a local. There’s a cliché that claims local Las Vegans don’t spend much time on the Strip, but don’t believe it—plenty of great restaurants on the Boulevard are just as popular with residents as they are with visitors. Bazaar Meat by José Andrés (702.761.7610) might be at the top of that list since the fantastic restaurant at the Sahara offers something for everyone, from the chef’s innovative tasting menus to simple but satisfying salads and sides like patatas bravas, cauliflower couscous and roasted leeks. One wouldn’t expect the same restaurant that specializes in giant steaks and Iberico pork to offer equally impressive vegetarian dishes, but that’s why this spot is so popular. Locals love a great buffet, too, and the magnificent Bacchanal Buffet (702.731.7928) at Caesars Palace just recently reinstated its weekend brunch. Tour the pancake and waffle bar, the meat carving station with slab bacon and honey-baked ham, the egg and omelet bar and the hot and cold dish selection with everything from crab Florentine Benedict to Hawaiian-style loco moco before you make your culinary choices. One newer restaurant on the Strip that has been making enough noise to reverberate into the local consciousness is Roy Choi’s Best Friend (888.769.2464) at Park MGM. The Korean barbecue and late-night party food that anchor this menu were inspired by the chef’s coming-ofage in Los Angeles, but there’s something about these flavors and presentations that translates perfectly for Las Vegans. Try the housemade kimchi, the beef shortrib tacos, buttermilk fried chicken and the pork belly bowl with fried egg and you’ll make the connections. –Brock Radke

Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods Tour

Born and raised in New Jersey, Calhoun went to college for music— she’s a classically trained opera singer. “After college, in a very dramatic fashion, I was like, ‘I’m going to move to L.A. and be like Ari Gold from Entourage,” she says. “But then I realized people like that make $12 an hour, forever.” So, she tried something different and worked for the company Rock ’n’ Roll Fantasy Camp. “I was the owner’s assistant and moved into marketing, then VP of operations, talent coordination, execution of the camp’s operations. It was a very cool learning opportunity for me because I got to see all sides of the business.” The position at the camp brought her to Las Vegas in 2013. After a short stint in nonprofit work, “I quickly realized I missed entertainment,” Calhoun says. “I knew I wouldn’t be able to be 100% passionate about my career unless it was in entertainment.” And right around that time, T-Mobile Arena was being built, and she knew that was what she wanted to be a part of. She joined MGMRI in 2015 as one of the arena’s booking managers. Two years ago, she moved into her current title and now works

with MGM Grand’s Grand Garden Arena, T-Mobile Arena and the Michelob Ultra Arena at Mandalay Bay. When you hop on your computer and look up all the concerts across MGMRI’s properties, it’s Calhoun who books them. “I look at my calendar and all the open dates,” she says. “I do the deals, how each one is going to be executed. The fun part—once it’s booked and released into the world, we must stay that central person because we’re the first person and we’re the last person.”

For all those Phish fans out there, thank Calhoun, who has helped book the band’s acclaimed Halloween shows at the Grand Garden Arena. “They don’t have to come here, they can go anywhere for their Halloween shows, so it’s about

nurturing those relationships to make them want to come back here,” she says. Calhoun also grew up a huge NSYNC fan. And when she booked Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods Tour, “I was walking around the floor at T-Mobile Arena, standing there, and he was right there rehearsing “SexyBack,” she says. “If you would’ve told 12-yearold Erin she would be booking the biggest arena in Las Vegas and standing next to Justin Timberlake and could go backstage and say hello … It was just this moment where I was going to cry but I couldn’t because I was in public. But that was just a really cool, I-did-itmoment. It was a personal, special moment.” Heavy-metal music fans can also thank Calhoun for bringing the Psycho Las Vegas festival to Mandalay Bay. “It’s been fun for me to be on the ground floor with the creators of Psycho and be able to make it special to what we can do,” she says.

Calhoun has some happy news to share: she’s getting married next year. “I got a quarantine puppy and I got a ring,” she says, laughing. “As if I don’t have enough concerts to plan, I’m going to plan a wedding, too.”

“When I first started, I was the only female booker on the team,” Calhoun says. “I would go out to booking conferences, and it’s a very male-dominated world. From the MGMRI side, I think it’s special that they focus on women in leadership. They want to see women grow. I have personally felt that I’ve been nurtured to be the person that got promoted twice; to be a person that they invest in. To be a woman in this male-dominated world—it’s nice to work for a company that appreciates the diversity and supports it.”

Sherrer was born in South Korea and was adopted by an American couple when she turned a year old. “I was left in a basket on the orphanage steps and left with a note that my mom still has to this day,” Sherrer says. “It says in Korean, something to the effect of, ‘We can’t take care of our daughter. We want a couple to adopt her and take her to America and give her a beautiful life.’ And, I was.” Sherrer went to college in Boston for theater and costume design. She took an internship in L.A. to pursue a possible career in wardrobe design, but ended up working for Focus Features, where she had her first brush with public relations. After graduating, she moved back to L.A. and started as a junior publicist, working on movies and TV awards shows. In 2009, she applied for a job in Las Vegas with MGMRI. “I started in February of 2010,” she says. “My goal was two years in Vegas. ’Cause who lives in Vegas for longer?”

In 2011, Sherrer was promoted to public relations manager and in 2018 to director of public relations. The first big

moments—the things that get guests excited,” Sherrer says. “For PR, we do this to get the word out about the event, buzz about it, to sell tickets and fill those seats.”

arena concert she worked on was Aerosmith at MGM’s Grand Garden Arena in 2010. She helped launch Jabbawockeez when they landed their first Vegas residency. She has helped direct PR for the openings of T-Mobile Arena and Park Theater and assisted with those venues’ major concerts and sporting events. She helped plan the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight at the Grand Garden Arena. She’s assisted with the launch of the residencies Lady Gaga, Aerosmith, Cher, Queen and Adam Lambert, the Aces of Comedy series at The Mirage, the Billboard Music Awards and the Academy of Country Music awards. And she’s worked closely with the Vegas Golden Knights and all their games and events.

Remember Drake’s performance on the Bellagio fountains for 2017’s Billboard Music Awards? Sherrer worked on that. Have you seen Bruno Mars’ music video for “24K Magic” when he rode a personal watercraft on the fountains of Bellagio? Sherrer was there, too. Having no experience with UFC, Sherrer learned the ropes quickly and took on PR responsibilities for UFC events in 2012.

“I remember McGregor when he was on an undercard and then watching him progress,” she says. Since then, she’s worked almost every big UFC bout at T-Mobile Arena.

“I think that, and it goes to all the women in this story, we work so hard to make it not about it being a man or a woman—it’s about doing your job and doing it well,” Sherrer says. “We’re just lucky to be in a company where we have men and women that are there to support us and help us grow and guide us. It’s about the work more than anything, in my opinion. I see the other ladies in this story, they’re all so excellent at what they do. Being a woman in entertainment, it’s very true—it’s male dominated and I think for me being in PR I’m proud of the skill set that I bring to the table. It pushes me. It’s nice to work for a company that isn’t afraid to have women in top roles—breaking that glass ceiling.”

When Binette was 22, she left her hometown of Montreal and joined Cirque du Soleil’s touring shows as a ticket office supervisor. “I toured with them for four years in the U.S., Canada and Europe,” she says. “It was definitely a defining moment in my career.” When the job ended, she was asked to be a part of the opening of Cirque’s first Vegas residency show, Mystère at Treasure Island (which was a part of the MGMRI family back then). She made the move in 1993 and worked in ticketing.

Binette moved up the ladder from ticketing into positions like director of operations for theaters at MGM Grand and executive director of its Grand Garden Arena to her current position, where she oversees operations for MGMRI’s mid-size theater venues in Ohio, Michigan, Mississippi, District of Columbia, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. In her Vegas role, she’s responsible for partner and vendor relations, expenditures, assisting the team and being a liaison for guest services and security. During her tenure, Binette has been responsible for

She can also stick a feather in her cap for the Justin Timberlake 20/20 Experience Tour at the Grand Garden Arena. “At the end of the show, I walked by his dressing room,” Binette says. “I said hello, explained that I was the general manager and he told me how

incredible the experience and space was, the guest services, telling me to pass along to the staff how thankful he was. I left with the biggest smile.” Binette was recently selected to be a part of MGMRI’s Accelerated Leadership Program—chosen personally by MGMRI president and CEO Bill Hornbuckle. The yearlong program helps grow talented individuals into senior leadership roles. “I wouldn’t be in my role currently if it wasn’t for the incredible support I’ve had from the many leaders throughout my career that believed in me,” she says. “The company gave me the tools to grow and be who I am today.” One of Binette’s favorite memories over the course of her career with MGMRI was the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquaio fight at the Grand Garden Arena in 2015. “It was definitely a fight that defined boxing,” she says. “We only had about seven weeks to pull it

together. What is so fascinating to me is the collaboration between all the different departments. And the best moment of the night is when the fighter walks out and seeing the excitement of the crowd, and knowing that this is in our house, in our home and being able to share this with the world. That sense of pride resonated with me.” Binette loves spending time with her family—especially when her husband and kids have their Friday-night dance parties and game nights. She also does CrossFit six days a week at 6 a.m. “It’s a great source of stress relief and makes me feel good and healthy,” she says. “I think there are many women that could’ve been selected for this article, so I’m honored to be featured,” Binette says. “It’s not without the help and support in my life, female and male. I just hope that I can be an inspiration to really prove that if you work hard and are really dedicated, you can make it happen.”

From a young age, Lopez had a love for the performing arts. She attended UNLV, concentrating in theater studies, studied modern British drama abroad in London and arts administration at NYU. As a senior, she was considering delving into nonprofit arts or teaching after graduation, but landed a part-time box-office attendant position for the musical Hairspray at MGMRI’s Luxor in 2006. Lopez went on to help open some of the city’s most-beloved Cirque du Soleil shows including Criss Angel BeLIEve at Luxor, and Zarkana and Viva Elvis at Aria. “I became the department head and part of the opening team for CityCenter and Aria,” she says. “It was a very special time with a very special group of people. Plus, it was the first time the Elvis Presley estate lent out his catalog of music for a show.” After serving as Aria’s showroom manager and front-of-house operations for five years, she transitioned more into an entertainment manager role, and that’s when she got into ticketing. By 2014, Lopez fully transitioned into ticketing for MGMRI, focusing on four showrooms and the MGM Grand Garden Arena. “I was so lucky to work with the titans of the industry at that property to really teach me, educate me and help me grow,” she says. second to last row with my mom. It’s the most incredible moment. Fast forward 15 years and Barbra Streisand is playing in one of my venues (T-Mobile Arena). I helped ticket that show. I never expected that. It was incredible.”

When she’s not ticketing events, Lopez loves to personally support the art and entertainment community in Las Vegas as a season ticket holder to The Smith Center for the Performing Arts and The Nevada Ballet Theater. “I’m so proud, and I mean that in the most humble of ways,” Lopez says. “It’s been a lot of hard work, sacrifice and determination to get to this point, and I’m so excited for what’s next as well. I love that all these women are being highlighted and celebrated because we are underrepresented in the industry that is often male-dominated. I love thinking back to when I was a young person myself growing up in this city and I was looking for opportunity. So for us to potentially play that role for future generations—I’m so honored to be included in that company.”

Zappia, a South Wales, United Kingdom, native, was just 19 years old in 1989 when she joined the cruise ship industry. “I started as a youth counselor, like a nanny to 1,800 kids,” she says. “I worked my way up to assistant cruise director, like Julie from The Love Boat.” Zappia worked on ships until 1997, when she followed her-then musician boyfriend to Las Vegas. “Once in Vegas, I landed in entertainment, which I’d always wanted to do,” she says. “I’d always loved entertainment since being on cruise ships.” Zappia joined MGMRI in 1999 as a ticketing specialist at New York-New York. After eight months, she was promoted to supervisor, and one of her first big projects was being part of the team responsible for bringing Cirque du Soleil’s first-ever 18-and-over show to Las Vegas. “I went to Montreal when they were putting the Zumanity show together,” she says. “Seeing Guy Laliberte’s vision come together and then watching the theater being built at New York-New York—it was special.” Zappia was also responsible for bringing a fun sports

tournament here. “I’m the person that brought 3-on-3 basketball from Spokane, Wash., down to Vegas,” she says. “I got together with the executive director in Spokane—they’d been doing the sport up there for 26 years every June. And I thought, ‘How cool would that be to bring that down to Vegas?’ I did a lot of research, got everything together and we brought it down here during the first year that T-Mobile opened. We brought it out on the Plaza. Just to watch that come to fruition—it was huge, it was great. We took up the entire plaza with it. It was a three-day tournament. It was just so much fun,

and everybody had a great time. It was one of those events that will stay really close to me because it was my first big event that I did from beginning to end.” “That’s what we’re into—making memories,” Zappia says. “If we don’t make a good memory for every guest that comes in here, we’ve done an injustice. I want to make sure that everybody that comes to a show has a positive experience and they can leave with a beautiful memory.” You can thank Zappia and her team for putting on events like the Concerts on the Beach series at Mandalay Bay, iHeartRadio Music Festival, Las Vegas Aces games, Day N Vegas, as well as working with resident shows like Carrot Top, Fantasy and Blue Man Group at Luxor and Michael Jackson ONE at Mandalay Bay.

Zappia loves to camp, ride dirt bikes, shoot guns, practice archery and go hiking. When she needs a break, she’ll go to her 20 acres in Utah so she can spend time in nature.

“There’s just so much that I’ve been a part of and I’m just so grateful for it all, it’s so tremendous,” Zappia says. “I couldn’t wish for a better career. I’m a firm believer that you get something because you work hard at it. And I think that all the women being featured are hard workers and true professionals. I feel very privileged to be featured alongside of them because I think they’re all strong, very capable, brilliant women.”

On the operational side, Zappia takes care of contracts for the shows, logistics for seating, expenses, production, staffing and more. “I take calls 24/7, but it’s like second nature,” she says. “I want my employees to love their jobs and being here. I have an amazing team and I always want to push them forward to success.”

Revue founder Jennifer Romas embraces change and expansion Long-running topless revue Sexxy: The Show reopened at Westgate Las Vegas in August, and producer and star Jennifer Romas added new choreography, scenes and cast members, including singer Anne Martinez and entertainer Rico Bozant. She also brought a fresh perspective to Sexxy after working to expand the brand despite pandemic restrictions. She launched a supper club-style version of the show, Sexxy After Dark, at Larry Flynt’s Hustler Club, and now she’s presiding over both productions with plans for further growth. In a tough period when so many shows struggled to survive, you found ways to thrive and grow. Big time. This summer, the company sold its most expensive home ever, Vegas Modern 001 (and the most expensive yet sold in Las Vegas as of press time). We talked recently to founder Tyler Jones about the company and building the home. Your family has been in Vegas for a really, really long time. But Blue Heron has only been

established since 2004. What was your impetus behind founding the company? I grew up with my father’s (home building) company … and ultimately went to architecture school at University of Colorado in Boulder. By the time I was 25, when we started up the company, I’d already had quite a bit of both construction and design experience. Blue Heron was a way to put it all together to come up with a process and a workflow for our clients and for

our team. It was more efficient, and was always about this ultra-strong architectural vision. A lot of Blue Heron architecture has a (particular) contemporary feel. Why does that type of style resonate with you? Our Vegas Modern design philosophy is all about being authentic to the culture and what people who live in Las Vegas in 2021 need and want in their homes. It’s also about what is

appropriate to build in the desert with modern technologies and modern abilities. It’s really kind of a common-sense approach, and it’s also beautiful. There are no rules to the type of design we do, which is very important to us because we like to push boundaries and (we’re) constantly evolving. The Vegas Modern 001 house recently sold; it is incredibly beautiful. What in that home were you most proud of? The cohesive nature of the design. You can really tell that it was done by the same team that had a perfectly aligned vision, and we didn’t compromise on any of that as we went all the way through a very complicated and expensive

and difficult design and build process. That takes an incredibly talented team, and it takes a special structure from a company standpoint, to be able to orchestrate a large group of professionals coming from different disciplines. It was the most expensive house sold in Las Vegas yet. What do you think contributed to its quick sale? Well, I had the opportunity to meet with the buyer personally. And he recognized that this was really a masterpiece, and what the Blue Heron team did in Vegas Modern 001 is not otherwise available in Las Vegas. There’s nothing else out there that’s been designed to that same level and executed to that same level.

Thinking about Las Vegas’ future and home building, where do you think it’s going? I just don’t think there’s a limit to what could happen in Las Vegas. As a city, we’re still in our infancy. I think technology moves very quickly these days. So what’s possible in terms of how you design and build homes changes month to month. That’s very exciting for us because we like to stay at the very cutting edge of construction science and design. And the modern lifestyle is evolving faster than ever. Part of the fun of what we do is to continuously adapt and evolve to meet those needs. We’re just getting started on Vegas Modern 002 right now. That’ll be our next step (and) it’s kind of our research and development. –Nina King
