One of the most enjoyable—and free!— activities on the Las Vegas Strip is people-watching. We here at Las Vegas Magazine are big fans of the pastime, often pointing out in the pages of this magazine some of the best places for it. And what makes it so much fun to engage in? That’s easy—it’s what people are wearing (or, in the case of some, not wearing). Fashion is a huge part of the Las Vegas experience; anywhere you go, you’ll see eye-catching shirts, dresses, shoes, hats and, yes, even socks. Because let’s face it: For millions of our visitors, part of being here is making a fashion statement. Many of you hit the ground running to the nearest retail mecca as soon as your plane touches down; many of you may not be sure where to start. Comedy Without Limits When you go see Eddie Griffin perform at his reopened stand-up comedy residency, you better be ready. The veteran funnyman has never shied away from controversial topics over the course of his 30-year career, and he’s not about to change his ways after a

global pandemic and a polarizing presidential election. Griffin’s latest comedy special, Laughin’ Through Your Mask, captured his performance the day after the Capitol attack in January. “It wrote itself,” he laughs. “Those (rioters) proved building a wall does not work,

the way they climbed the Capitol walls.” A longtime Vegas resident, Griffin has maintained a residency for years at the Rio and then SLS Las Vegas, which transformed into the Sahara in late 2019 but wisely held onto their in-house comedy star. –Brock Radke

British Bites Gordon Ramsay Pub is a mix of comfortable and lively, as the restaurant is located right in the heart of the casino-floor action. Beer fans will love the fact that there are dozens of beers on tap and more than 60 different labels of bottled beer. Enjoy a pint or two (or three!) of favorites like Stella Artois, Dogfish Head, Innis & Gunn, Guinness, Samuel Adams, Angry Orchard and Boddingtons. Food here is the main attraction, though, and of course, guests can consume Ramsay’s signature dish—the roasted beef Wellington. But try the master chef’s pub-inspired creations like the popular fish and chips, onion and ale soup, crispy chicken paillard and the grilled pub burger. It’s a starter, but deserves the entrée spotlight—the short rib kettle chip nachos are served with English cheddar sauce, pickled peppers and sour cream. This is one British dish that gives the Mexican-food favorite a run for its money. End the meal with Ramsay’s classic sticky toffee pudding served with a side of vanilla ice cream. Let Your Mind Wander If you’re looking for a way to take your mind off things for a while, a roller coaster might be your best bet, and there’s no better place for such thrills than the Big Apple Coaster. A Celebration of Everything Popular music, food and art festival returns This year’s Life Is Beautiful festival in downtown Las Vegas promises to be one of the most varied and exciting to date, with everything from top-flight acts to world-class dining options, comedy and much more. Taste Sensations At Top of the World, a whole slew of new dishes have brightened up the traditional steakhouse fare at this lush, plush environment with the most unique views in Vegas. A new Prime beef tartare surf and turf comes with shrimp, avocado and smoked tomato gazpacho; and it’s actually gluten-free if you have that sensitivity. The spring pea ravioli is suitable for vegetarians, with ricotta salata, preserved lemon and toasted breadcrumbs. If you like Korean flavors, the Prime kalbi short ribs with a Korean chili and short rib glaze will have you drooling. Other excellent new options for the seafood lover include the stuffed roasted lobster tail (with king crab), or grilled Icelandic salmon, with a spring ratatouille. The 25-year aged balsamic is a wonderful addition. Seared seabass is simply served with garlic, lemon and brown butter. And seared ahi tuna comes with smoked clams. Cirque production celebrates the life of a musical icon During his lifetime, Michael Jackson exuded a childlike wonder, an attitude that proved infectious for his millions of fans. That same sense of wonder pervades each and every second of Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson ONE at Mandalay Bay, a celebration of The Gloved One’s music, legacy, philosophy and persona, achieved through a combination of dance, acrobatics, special effects, comic performances and, especially, music. The show is a series of vignettes tied together loosely by four young “misfits” who are pursued by baddies as they attempt to “save” Jackson’s music, rushing in and out of segments, sometimes participating in the activity onstage, from

bungee acrobatics during “Beat It” to some hilarious pantomime as Jackson’s glove seemingly comes to life during “Working Day and Night.” Elsewhere, there’s so much to look at and enjoy while looking forward to the next Jackson number—from dancers who come to electric life through the use of LED costumes during “Billie Jean” and trampoline artists who appear to defy gravity during “Thriller” to incredibly synchronized dance routines to both “They Don’t Care About Us” and “Smooth Criminal” (And, yes, that famous “lean” makes an appearance during the latter song, and yes, it’s electrifying.) Sprinkled through these bits are pictures of Jackson throughout the various stages of his life

and career, coupled with the music he was performing at the time—“I’ll Be There” as a member of the famed Jackson 5 is particularly affecting—and profound words he had for the world. The action climaxes in an amazing hologram sequence, with Jackson appearing alongside the misfits for a performance of “Man in the Mirror,” disappearing at key moments and reappearing at others; it’s a sobering reminder that Jackson is no longer with us, but the entire production is a reminder that the impact of his music will continue to touch and inspire generations of fans. –Ken Miller Mandalay Bay, 702.632.7580

Coastal Creations Fresh, savory and sensational southern Italian coastal cuisine shines at Osteria Costa. The casually cool spot is reminiscent of quaint villages along Italy’s coasts and the food is a reflection of the rustic traditions of simple yet flavor-filled recipes. Perfect examples include house-made pasta favorites like the linguine and clams tossed with garlic, chiles and lemon and the shrimp linguine with white wine and lemon. Other from-the-sea creations include salmon piccata with lemon and capers, and grilled branzino, a nice piece of Mediterranean sea bass cooked in lemon and oregano. Land options include an 18-ounce grilled bone-in ribeye and an Italian roast pork chop; or guests can go classic with chicken Parm, spaghetti and meatballs, or meat lasagna. For a lighter meal, think about sharing some plates with your dining guests, like the calamari and the crispy and delicious fried mozzarella. Then order up one of the wood-fired pizzas like the popular spicy Calabrian with salami, chilis and touches of honey. Holiday celebrations bring in international acts Mexican Independence Day is officially on Sept. 16, but the entire week will be a celebration of the holiday, with some of the hottest Mexican music acts hitting the Strip to help commemorate the occasion. He’s only been part of the music scene for a few years, but Christian Nodal, who performs at Planet Hollywood’s Zappos Theater on Sept. 14, has made a significant impact in a short time, winning three Latin Grammy Awards, two Billboard Latin Music Awards and a Latin American Music Award. His 2017 single “Adios Amor” reached No. 1 on the Top 20 General Mexican Songs Chart, and No. 2 on the Billboard Top Latin Songs Chart. He’s already released three

albums, Me Dejé Llevar, Ahora and AYAYAY!, all of which are certified at least gold (his first two reached platinum). Alejandro Fernández, who appears at MGM Grand on Sept. 15-16, was born into a life of music (his father is ranchera legend Vincente Fernández), and has been performing since the age of 5. Since releasing his first album in 1992, he’s branched out from traditional Mexican music into mainstream pop, and has collaborated with everyone from Rod Stewart and Placido Domingo to Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé. He’s also become one of the best-selling Latin music artists of all time, selling more than 20 million albums worldwide.

Fans of Mexican pop will enjoy Camila, which performs at Tropicana Las Vegas on Sept. 18. Formed in 2005, the duo of Mario Domm and Pablo Hurtado has been pumping out hits like “Abrázame,” “Coleccionista de Canciones,” “Todo Cambio” and “Mientes,” collecting three Latin Grammy Awards and three Billboard Awards in the process. Bronco’s performance at Mandalay Bay Beach on Sept. 18 is part of the property’s ongoing Concerts on the Beach series. The grupero band is entering its fifth decade of entertaining fans with its mixture of melodic pop, regional Mexican music and elaborate jumpsuits while performing. –Ken Miller

Technique to Spare Mat Franco had plenty of time to reimagine his successful Las Vegas Strip show during the pandemic shutdown, and the results are nothing less than his fans would expect. In a way, it makes perfect sense that Franco would be tweaking his show—after all, his show is called Magic Reinvented Nightly, a name that comes from a signature illusion Franco performs, using information he obtains from audience members during the course of each show. No matter how many times you see Franco’s show, each one will be different, thanks to this illusion. The new additions, like everything else Franco does, will have you scratching your head. One involves a poker table, four volunteers and some serious sleight-of-hand; another involves a helium-filled balloon that somehow “switches” with another balloon filled with just air. If you find yourself asking “huh?” over and over, you won’t be alone. One segment that’s likely to always be in Franco’s show comes midway through: He begins producing cards from thin air, demonstrating why he’s easily one of the greatest close-up magicians in the world. –Ken Miller The Linq Hotel, 702.777.2782

Spooky Fun If this year has made you want to tap out, then it’s time to tap into the fifth dimension at The Twilight Zone by Monster Mini Golf. It’s a great place to have fun, unwind and remember what weird meant before it became all too normal. Not only does the 10,000-squarefoot, glow-in-the-dark attraction offer a classic and maddeningly difficult putt-putt course, but it also has eerie props and artwork inspired by the television show, bowling lanes, an alternate dimension gift shop and arcade games. –Las Vegas Magazine Staff Bally’s, 702.333.2121

Surprises Abound Bazaar Meat by José Andrés has been an award-winning restaurant since opening in 2014, and one meal there will be all you need to understand why. The dining room itself is impressive, large enough to accommodate big groups, but with separate rooms if you so desire. You’ll notice the small touches in everything here, starting with drinks. You can opt for a Salt Air margarita, featuring Milagro tequila, Combier and lime, all topped with … salt air.

Retail paradise has something for everyone If you only wanted to hit up one place in Vegas, you wouldn’t be disappointed in The Grand Canal Shoppes, a spectacular shopping area. You’ll find everything from attractions to dining in a gorgeous, walkable area. One of the premier attractions of the Italian-themed center are the gondola rides, where gondoliers serenade riders as they cruise the canals that wind throughout. KAMU Ultra Karaoke lets you belt out tunes in one of 40 suites, all socially distanced and with food and drink to be had as well. Say hello to Mr. Life of the Party You know how there’s that one guy in the group who’s always the life of the party? You’re looking at him: Donnie Fox, head of customer development for Money, Baby! at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. “I’ve always been that guy where people look at me and are like, ‘What’s wrong with this guy?’ Then they get to know me and they’re like, ‘Wow, this guy is awesome!’” says Fox. Born and raised in Las Vegas, Fox knows this city through and through, and he’s a 15-year veteran of the nightlife industry, working at almost every top nightclub and dayclub in the city. He even spent a few years working in the L.A. scene. “I’m always out and about,” he says. “Ya know—out there shaking hands and kissing babies.” If you haven’t noticed yet, Fox not only is a ball of good energy, but a jokester, too. “You can put me in a toilet, and I’ll make a good time out of it,” he says, laughing. It’s all this personality that helps fuel his job at Money, Baby! Essentially, it’s Fox’s responsi-

bility to bring the party to the hybrid nightclubmeets-sports bar-meets lounge. He brings in new business, makes sure the crowd is always having fun—“You can find me on the dance floor, taking shots with people, on the mic,” he says—and spreading the positive party vibes. “I’ve always been an entertainer since I was a kid,” Fox says. “I like being around people. I’ve always thought if you can still laugh in life, life is going to be OK. And if I can bring that to the people, it makes me happy. People know that I’m always going to show them a good time.” Fox has had a lot of good times over his career. “But out of the 15 years of my nightlife career, this is the favorite position I’ve had,” he says. “Money, Baby! encompasses everything that Vegas didn’t have. The entrance is through a very nondescript bookcase, and once inside, guests are transported back in time to the Prohibition era in American history. “I think we kinda stuck to the hardcore Prohibition era,” said owner Noel Bowman. “We’ve got the barrels; we’ve got a lot of the Gatsby-type décor. We’ve kinda stayed true to that 1920s era. Wallpaper and art are from that era, chandeliers, Tommy guns, I’ve stayed pretty authentic with it. We call 1923 a modern speakeasy. While our look is somewhat authentic, we certainly have the classic drinks, but we’re toying around with some new, modern mixology.”

Nikki Glaser is really putting herself out there Nikki Glaser has significantly added to her résumé over the last year, launching a new daily podcast on Will Ferrell’s Big Money Players network on iHeartRadio in March, hosting the first-ever MTV Movie & TV Awards in May and hosting and executive- producing buzzy new HBO Max reality show FBoy Island. She also started a new comedy tour to kick off the summer, and hits The Mirage on Sept. 17 as part of the Aces of Comedy series. How does it feel to be back in Las Vegas again? I love performing in Vegas because even though a lot of locals come to shows, it’s such a great mixture of people from all over. You don’t have to cater the set to a certain type of people, you can just be yourself. And it’s so cool to be a Vegas act right now because I worked in the clubs forever where I was just one of the comedians on the bill, thankful

to get a couple hundred bucks for the weekend and stay at the hotel and eat at the casino cafeteria. This time they might fulfill my entire rider and have a vegan smorgasbord for me before I go onstage. But I love The Mirage, and it’s really a mile marker in my career to be performing there. Is the material for this show pretty structured, or will it be more spontaneous? This whole tour I’ve been building the act and figuring out what it is I want to say, and it’s all leading to a special taping I’m doing in November. I’m someone who really develops the material onstage, and this show is perfect timing because there is the right amount of flying by the seat of my pants, but I know where the the jokes are. It’s not too regimented, but I know what I want to say and I know the jokes I do have are great, so any that come up in the moment—which is inevitable in Vegas

because everyone is processing their surroundings and reacting to how different everything is—will be cool because I’m at a point where I can trust myself to play with the audience and go off on tangents. Doing a daily podcast seems like such a grind. What’s your secret to keeping things fresh and funny? I’ve always loved listening to the radio and always idolized people like Howard Stern and Adam Carolla, people you feel super connected to because you listen to their voice every day, and I knew that was a medium I wanted to sink my teeth into and hone a talent for. I just know as a consumer of the kind of (content) I wanted to make, I wanted to do a daily thing and I also want to get those 10,000 hours. Once I clock those, I’ll be an expert and undeniably good. I don’t get nervous before I go onstage or do a podcast anymore. My job rarely stresses me out and I’ve worked very hard to get to that point where it feels like second nature. Hosting a reality show was something new and different for you. Why do you think FBoy Island has been such a success? In terms of television, I’ve never been so trusted to be me and not have someone tell me what to do. There were no notes. It was, “We know what you are and we like it.” So I felt really comfortable developing a new style of hosting a reality TV show in which I make fun of the genre and the tropes and how ridiculous it all is while also being very sincerely invested in the relationships that develop. I love watching people fall in love and I believe that it’s real and it was confirmed for me on the show. And I have a deep respect for the people willing to go on a show like that. There’s an inherent bravery in putting yourself out there that much.

Music’s biggest acts converge on Vegas for iHeartRadio festival By Brock Radke While the music industry saw quite a bit of innovation and productivity during the challenging times of 2020 and 2021, the radio industry faced undeniable challenges as the number of drivers on American roads declined and listenership slowly climbed back to stability. Advertising budgets were cut and layoffs were common, but demand remained steady and is rising again as more musical content recharges radio stations across the country.

That surge is one reason all eyes will be on Las Vegas—specifically T-Mobile Arena and the versatile Area15 venue—this week when the iHeartRadio Music Festival returns on Sept. 17-18. The festival is one of the marquee events for the broadcast, podcast and streaming radio platform owned by New York-based iHeartMedia. And just as it did before the pandemic, this two-day concert will feature the biggest names in pop, rock, country, hiphop, alternative and every other musical genre you can imagine, finally coming together to perform live for the first time in a long time. By itself, the first-day lineup is an impressive roster of legends and stars. Taking the stage at T-Mobile on Sept. 17 will be power-pop favorites Cheap Trick, English dance diva Dua Lipa, country duo Florida Georgia Line, influential rapper J. Cole, L.A. pop rock outfit Maroon 5, Southern

hip-hop hitmaker Nelly, and resilient alt-rock band Weezer. Singer-songwriter Finneas, sibling of second-day star Billie Eilish, is scheduled for a special guest performance. For the first time, the iHeart daytime stage will take up resi-

dency at Area15 just west of the Strip, and once again serve as a showcase for the fastest-rising stars in pop music. “Driver’s License” chart-buster Olivia Rodrigo could shine brightest on Sept. 18 during this day-long session, but performances will also come

from Justin Bieber collaborator The Kid Laroi, hip-hop star and one-time Daylight Beach Club resident artist Saweetie, Maryland rock band All Time Low, English singer Yungblud, social media darling and singer Addison Rae and many more up-and-comers. That night, it’s time to go back to T-Mobile for sets from Georgia country-pop performer Sam Hunt, hit-making rapper Lil Baby, R&B superstar Khalid, classic rockers Journey (which return for a new residency show at the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas in December), British arena rockers Coldplay, and the inimitable Eilish, a newage pop star who’s also headlining the Life is Beautiful festival in downtown Las Vegas the very same weekend (see page 11). This is a collection of artists that could only reunite at this unique, only-in-Vegas musical spectacular, a weekend that will go down as one of the biggest events of 2021.

While the venue is beautifully designed with various themed rooms for dining, one of the coolest features is how to get into the restaurant. You’ll come across a storefront and, inside, a “fake bakery.” The host will have to guide you through secret doors and pathways to get into the restaurant—all this reminiscent of how the mob once entered establishments. Menu highlights include the gorgeous premium seafood tower, a curated collection of dry- and wet-aged steaks, wagyu braised short ribs

Outside the theater there are plenty of attention-grabbing visuals: A large engraved plaque from the Society of American Magicians dubbing Copperfield the Magician of the Century, as well as a secondary title: “Forever to be known as the King of Magic”; a statue of “Blu Alien,” one of the characters you’ll see later in the show; and a bust of Copperfield, below which swirl an assortment of images, including the Statue of Liberty, a nod to his famous 1983 illusion in which he made the New York City landmark disappear before millions of fascinated viewers. If you haven’t yet been to a Copperfield show, know this: The illusions are sensation-

al. They’re not just immensely visual, with lots of lights and dramatic music, they’re often downright emotionally powerful. As much commitment as Copperfield has to his craft, he’s got just as much passion about his past. In bringing his childhood to life, Copperfield enlists the aid of several “assistants,” including the alien mentioned previously and a dinosaur named “Frank.” We know, we know … it sounds corny, right? But don’t be the least bit surprised when you find a lump in the back of your throat as the illusion unfolds. There are moments during a Copperfield show when you stop thinking about how he does any of the amazing things he does and just ... accept them. Call it believing, call it what you will—it all feels tangibly real. But mixed in with all this is a genuine sense of fun. Copperfield is very aware of his legend looming large, and takes plenty of potshots at it, keeping the audience laughing and relaxed. As great as your memories of Copperfield have been over the years, get ready for a whole new set after seeing this show.
