If really pressed on what my favorite part of the Las Vegas Strip is, I would definitely have to say the shows. I’m an entertainment geek; I’ve been heavily into stand-up comedians, magicians and musicians since I was a kid growing up with the television stars of that era— George Carlin, Robin Williams, David Copperfield, Doug Henning, Penn & Teller, Donny and Marie Osmond, The Bee Gees, and so many others. To now be working in a city that plays host to many of some of my all-time favorite entertainers is nothing short of surreal. And no city presents entertainers in a better light—and in a better setting—than Las Vegas. I just got to check out Penn & Teller’s return to the Rio. It was a terrific evening of entertainment, and a reminder of why these two gentlemen still find ways to surprise us decades into their careers (“Renegades of Magic,” p. 30). The topless, adults-only revue has been a part of Las Vegas’ history for longer than I’ve been alive, and Las Vegas still hosts many such revues, including the long-standing Fantasy at Luxor (“Tease You, Please You,” p. 34). Whether these amazing women have to wear masks or not, this show will move you. And yes, that last line was a double entendre!

Comedy is alive and well here as well, as Las Vegas now contains no fewer than six comedy clubs! This week, make sure to catch one of the busiest entertainers of the moment, Maz Jobrani, who performs at Tropicana Las Vegas’ Laugh Factory (“So Bright,” p. 32). The Australian Bee Gees Show at Excalibur may not be the real deal, but it’s about as close as you could possibly get, and anyone who remembers their heyday will absolutely love this tribute show (“Music and Memories,” p. 11). These shows are only the beginning of what’s out there. This issue also introduces you to the Blue Man Group at Luxor (“The Color of Fun,” p. 49); a new show at The STRAT, iLuminate (“Shine a Light,” p 10); Xavier Mortimer: The Dream Maker, also at The STRAT (“Don’t Believe Your Eyes,” p. 17); and the greatest Prince tribute show around, Purple Reign at Tropicana Las Vegas (“Back In It,” p. 38). In addition, we’ve rounded up some holiday happenings at the Strip’s pool clubs and nightclubs (“Labor Day Weekend Fun,” p. 24). Of course, we’ve also provided coverage of dining, shopping and the arts. I hope you appreciate Las Vegas as much as I do. It’s a special place like no other on Earth, one where your most vivid memories come back to life.

This is a classic steakhouse in every sense, from the servers who prepare Caesar salads tableside (a highlight we really recommend) to the classic cocktails on the menu. There’s so much to enjoy here, especially for steak fans. Couples will want to consider

the 32-ounce tomahawk, a ribeye that will turn every head in the place. Whatever you decide on, you get your choice of Bearnaise sauce or the restaurant’s signature “Zip” sauce. We recommend the latter, as there’s simply nothing else like it in town. There’s also lamb chops, veal osso buco and a Berkshire pork chop for meat lovers. –Ken Miller

Shine a Light America’s Got Talent has arguably dominated the Las Vegas entertainment scene for the last 15 years, starting with Terry Fator and going all the way to Tape Face, Piff the Magic Dragon, Mat Franco and Shin Lim. And another act from AGT is about to join that landscape, one that combines technology with cool dance moves—iLuminate. The act definitely got the attention of AGT’s judges—and the country—with its presentation. The dance company, founded by Miral Kotb, dressed in black and then turned off all the lights, making themselves invisible. Then the magic happened; their clothing was covered in LEDs and other light-producing hardware. They were able to achieve the seemingly impossible, thanks to the timing of the lights and the acrobatics of their dance moves. While they didn’t win their season, iLuminate nevertheless had arrived. They’ve since performed in more than 15 countries, and their original dream—to have a headlining show in Vegas—has come true. “I feel we are bringing something so fun and different to the city, and we’re excited for everyone to come out and join the party,” Kotb said. –Ken Miller The STRAT, 16+, 702.380.7777

The Lunchiest If lunch is on your mind, then Blue Ribbon Sushi in Red Rock Resort has got a deal that’s sure to appeal. The restaurant recently announced a new menu that’s available from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday to Sunday. Living up to the Bromberg brothers’ rep, the eatery offers buckets of wings in that signature style with chili sauce and wasabi honey. Grab specials of grilled salmon or pan-seared chicken with teriyaki sauce; Kalbi short ribs, platters of sushi or sashimi;

and salmon or poke rice bowls, all served with miso soup and wakame (a seaweed). Or indulge in a wagyu burger with teriyaki mayo. You’ve seen James Cameron’s impressive blockbuster movie about it. The story of the Titanic remains one of the most fascinating in history. And if you want to look inside the stories of the real people involved (sorry, Jack and Rose never existed), then head straight to Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition. Partly museum and partly interactive experience, no detail is left out: the design of the ship; re-creations of cabins; profiles of some of the famous people; a simulation of the deck of the ship on the fateful night it sank and a large piece of ice you can touch to give you an idea of just how cold it was that night. –KM Luxor, 702.262.4400

Music and Memories

Trio brings the sounds of legendary group to life In 1978, I was obsessed with two movies: Grease and Saturday Night Fever. I went to see Grease three times (waiting in line what seemed like hours each time), and although I was too young to see Fever, I was struck by two things: Its poster, featuring a mythical-looking John Travolta, striking his now-classic disco pose in a white suit; and the soundtrack, particularly the tracks by the Bees Gees—I had simply not heard anything like it before. To this day, that music still captivates me and takes me back. In other words, I’m the ideal audience for The Australian Bee Gees Show, a tribute to the legendary trio of The Brothers Gibb—Maurice, Robin and Barry, rendered beautifully by Wayne Hosk-

ing, David Scott and Michael Clift, respectively (on the night I attended, James Simpson and Matthew Baldoni filled in as Robin and Barry). They bring back 1978 to brilliant, vivid life, delivering crisp, note-perfect renditions of not only every Fever classic they wrote, either for themselves or other artists—“Stayin’ Alive,” “How Deep Is Your Love,” “Night Fever,” “You Should Be Dancing,” “More Than a Woman,” “If I Can’t Have You” and “Jive Talkin’”—but also the theme to Grease, written by Barry. (The Bee Gees were simply everywhere back then!) But that’s only the beginning of the fun on tap. The trio performs nearly 30 songs over the course of 70 minutes, some in their entirety,

some in small snippets or as part of medleys. There’s also a fair amount of humor throughout— Hosking will comment on how good that night’s audience is at singing along (and how he says it every night, but really means it this time), and during a moment when all three men are singing into one microphone, Hosking gets forced to the side so that just two men can sing, and he’s not sure what to do with himself until rejoining his bandmates at the mic. Best of all, the audience is fully encouraged to dance at “Club Mo,” off to the side of the stage. When the disco starts, the theater is transformed into a nightclub—and people like me are transported right back to 1978. –Ken Miller

Sharing Her Recipes It’s really not much of a contest: For people-watching and great views of the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, Giada cannot be beat. The restaurant’s perched on the second floor of The Cromwell, with floor-to-ceiling windows that open out onto a vista that includes Caesars Palace, the Fountains of Bellagio and Bally’s. Like Giada’s California-influenced Italian food, it’s delightful. If you’re here for dinner or for brunch, you’ll find plenty to keep you satisfied. We’re partial to those bacon-wrapped dates to start (especially when they mix in spicy Italian sausage and gorgonzola crema), and the arugula salad is terrific, its flavors snapping with candied lemon, crispy pancetta and Parmiagiano-Reggiano. Whether you opt for surf or turf, get ready for a treat. The branzino features creamy fennel and potato puree, braised fennel and a pomegranate glaze, while the veal chop saltimbocca is served Milanese-style. And cacio e pepe combines bucatini with pecorino Toscano. Don’t skip dessert here, especially Giada’s Favorite Cookies, which includes her lemon ricotta recipe—probably our favorite cookies on the entire Strip. No joke. –Ken Miller

A Bite of the Irish The potato cakes from Rí Rá Irish Pub are one of my favorite dishes in Vegas—they are so freaking good, and I literally order them every single time. With mashed potato, cheddar, green onion, sour cream and a balsamic glaze, these appetizers really do get you geared up for another course. The menu is packed with traditional Irish dishes like sausage rolls, bangers and mash, fish and chips, and shepherd’s pie, as well as twist on a Scotch egg made with deviled

egg mousse. You can get burgers, Irish curry, corned beef and cabbage, Jameson salmon with a whiskey-honey glaze, and the Black and Blue chicken salad with blue cheese and applewood smoked bacon. Fan Favorites Literally wax poetic when you gush over your favorite stars of television, film, music and stage at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas. The famous wax museum even gives guests the chance to snap pic after pic with superheroes from the Marvel Comics world, a slew of Las Vegas celebrities, and even a spot to relive The Hangover movie franchise and sit down with the Wolf Pack at The Hangover Bar, where you can actually order a specialty cocktail. –Kiko Miyasato The Venetian, 702.862.7800

Fall Under Its Spell

Rio steakhouse provides unbeatable flavors and views Treat yourself to the full steakhouse experience at VooDoo Steak. This restaurant at the top of the recently reopened Rio offers incredible views of the lights of the Strip in the near distance. Start with a cocktail, the Witch Doctor, which may possibly be Las Vegas’ most famous. This behemoth is concocted with five rums and a mix of fruit juices and is served in a monster glass fish bowl from whence smoke rolls off. (The smoke is created through the magic of dry ice.) Accompany that bad boy with the seafood tower, served hot or cold, or both. It’s piled with oysters, shrimp, crab, mussels and, depending on which version, ceviche, mini crab cakes, seared scallops and shrimp scampi. Pretty decadent.

But the appetizer menu doesn’t stop there. Go traditional with crab cake or a shrimp cocktail, or take it up a notch with a foie gras macaron with aged balsamic and gold accents, or a short rib bruschetta with truffle ricotta. An heirloom beet salad, prepared with aged balsamic, honeycomb, watercress and candied pecans, or French onion soup with Parmesan crust will both really hit the spot, not to mention providing the background for the main attractions here at VooDoo. For that, choose lamb chops, brick chicken or fried pork shank. Seafood lovers will dig Australian lobster tail, Ora King salmon or crab-stuffed halibut. But steak is the main draw, with 21-day

wet-aged steaks presented in a variety of ways, including a 10-ounce filet, 16-ounce ribeye, 8-ounce Mishima Reserve wagyu rib cap, or 12-ounce ribeye. The 32-ounce tomahawk dinner for two entices with a side of lobster mac and cheese. And there are plenty of other sides to add, like wild mushrooms, tempura green beans and a blue cheese potato gratin. For dessert, crème brûlée is a steakhouse favorite, but the Forbidden Apple gives you a bolder take on apple pie, with white-chocolate yuzu whipped ganache and honey-caramelized apple. Epitome of Fine Dining For dining at its finest, it doesn’t get better than the long-standing Restaurant Guy Savoy. The acclaimed French chef brings all his edible masterpieces to the plate at this fine-dining establishment. For those with mad green, the Celebration Menu offers a multicourse experience with wine pairing for $555 per person. Dishes include octopus terrine with caviar and saffron, seabream with Mediterranean flavors, Savoy’s signature artichoke and black truffle soup, A5 Japanese wagyu with lobster and a caramel-and-popcorn dessert. If a prepared menu is not up your alley, go à la carte with starters like the famous soup, seared foie gras and caviar service, then follow with selections from the sea (roasted wild Atlantic turbot, lobster or salmon) or land (Muscovy duck confit or veal chop). Every dish is an indulgent flavor experience in French cooking. End the memorable meal with the dessert trolley. Have your server wheel the decadence on over to your table and peruse plates of ice cream, sorbet, Mason jar desserts and traditional and modern French pastries. Bon appétit, indeed! –Kiko Miyasato

Baby, it’s cold inside! Wall-to-wall and seat-toseat, it’s all ice inside Icebar. A Classic Steakhouse Experience Longtime purveyor of meat shines on the Strip Smith & Wollensky are two names synonymous with a great steakhouse. So, were they two ranchers or rugged cowboys of the Wild West that joined forces to create the best cuts of meat? Nope. They were two names picked randomly from a phone book. First came the name Smith. The second shuffling of the pages produced Wollensky. And, in 1977, a N.Y. steakhouse was born. Since it’s a classic steakhouse, indulge in all the standard cocktails here, too, like a martini, Manhattan, sidecar, mule, gimlet or gin sour. Move up to the second floor for dinner and peruse a menu packed with top beef selections, many aged for extended periods of time for tenderness and intense flavoring, so be sure to ask your server about the aging varieties offered. Classic steakhouse cuts include bone-in ribeye, bone-in New York cut, boneless New York Strip and filet mignon. Star entreés fall under

chef’s recommendations like the coffee- and cocoa-rubbed 10-ounce filet with ancho chili butter and onions and the 10-ounce filet Oscar with jumbo lump crab meat, asparagus and Hollandaise. For an over-the-top experience, there’s the 44-ounce swinging tomahawk ribeye from Snake River Farms—a dry-aged cut of American wagyu, carved tableside and served with beeffat potatoes. Greatness on Display

Exhibition centers on Las Vegas’ boxing history It’s impossible to discuss the sport of boxing without thinking about the role Las Vegas played in its evolution. Some of the most legendary fights of all time were staged here: Larry Homes vs. Ken Norton in 1978; Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Thomas Hearns in 1981; Thomas Hearns vs. Marvin Hagler in 1985; Riddick Bowe vs. Evander Holyfield in 1992; Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Meldrick Taylor in 1990; George Foreman vs. Ron Lyle in 1976 … The list just seems endless. More than any sport, boxing helped to really bring Vegas to prominence as a sports mecca. And as Las Vegas begins to fully reemerge as the Entertainment Capital of the World, its position in sports has never been stronger—we now have the NHL, NFL, the UFC, the WNBA, Minor League Baseball and an American profes-

Justine Delmundo Daylife is the life that suits her When it comes to working in the Las Vegas daylife industry, model cocktail server Justine Delmundo is a veteran. She got into the industry more than seven years ago, working at various pool clubs including Drai’s Beachclub, Encore Beach Club and her first job at the OG dayclub, Rehab, where she auditioned on a lark and landed the position. Now Delmundo is celebrating her second season at Daylight Beach Club at Mandalay Bay. “I’ve always loved dayclubs—yes, it’s hot— but you get to spend all day with people, with guests, and I love that,” she says. “Another reason I love working in this industry (is) in high school I was really, really shy, and working this kind of job has made me come out of my shell.” Delmundo’s job entails mainly taking care of cabana guests—many there to celebrate big occasions, and that’s the favorite part of her

job, she says. “Being a part of someone’s big celebration—whether it’s a birthday, bachelor party, divorce party—it’s just nice to be a part of someone’s special day and contribute to it and celebrate with them. I’m the host of their party, so it’s really nice to see their reactions to the party we give them.” When Delmundo isn’t giving her guests the time of their life at Daylight, you’ll find her hitting the books. She’s currently enrolled in college, studying to be a physician’s assistant with plans to work in the emergency room. You can also find the Tacoma, Wash., native (she was raised in Las Vegas) hitting the hiking trails, mainly in Zion National Park, where she’s trying to hike every trail. She also loves to fish. “I just love being outdoors,” Delmundo says. It seems like working in daylife—albeit a different type of outdoors—is a perfect fit. –Kiko Miyasato

Inventive varieties include a bacon and egg version with leeks, Fresno chiles and fresh mozzarella, and the signature smoked salmon pizza. Bottomless craft-your-own mimosas mean you can create that show right at your table. Authentic noodle and dumpling dishes are the centerpieces of the all-day menu, and you won’t want to miss the crystal shrimp har gow or pork siu mai. On the Strip, the Palazzo’s gorgeous Mott 32 (702.607.3232) is another refined Chinese restaurant that just happens to serve some of the tastiest dim sum dishes anywhere. The overall menu embraces the flavors of Hong Kong, but the dumplings you need to eat are the Shanghai-style hot and sour Iberico pork soup dumplings, a masterpiece of a morsel. Wild mushroom and water chestnut dumplings and sugar-coated and baked pork buns are definitely worth your time as well. Din Tai Fung (702.590.8650) is a household name in the dim sum game at the global level, with dozens of locations in the U.S. and across Asia, Australia and the U.K. Its lone Las Vegas location is a crisp and cool restaurant at Aria, where friends and families gather to share bamboo steamers full of those Shanghainese soup dumplings, aka xiao long bao, as well as spicy pork or chicken wontons, vegan dumplings in bright green wrappers, steamed buns and expertly stir-fried greens like bok choy, broccoli and mustard greens. It’s a delightful dining experience that finally found a proper home on the Strip. The newest dim sum destination in Las Vegas is on West Flamingo Road and it comes from veteran chef Kenny Chye, a culinary artist who continues to create the blueprint for vegan Chinese dining in Las Vegas. After successfully launching several different restaurant concepts in recent years, he just opened Chef Kenny’s Vegan Dim Sum (702.251.3920), where all those familiar flavors and dishes come to life minus the meat. Chye crafts his own blends of meat substitutes from soy, vegetables and other plant-based ingredients to create brilliant renditions of siu mai, har gow, sesame balls, pan-fried chive cakes and other dim sum items that will fool you into thinking you’re eating pork, shrimp, chicken and beef. An examination of the Bible passage, “It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven.” Penn & Teller not only want to suggest that both are equally hard, they want to show how both are possible—at the same time! In a direct nod to how things changed during the shutdown, Jillette performs a Zoom trick with a social media fan—the whole thing is live, with Teller providing off-screen assistance that makes the illusions “work.” This bit is particularly hilarious because things don’t go exactly as planned, and both illusionists embrace it, rather than ignore it and move on. But fans of some of the duo’s best bits can rest easy—Teller still performs the illusion involving a large tank of water and his ability to withdraw objects from it, both inanimate and alive; and Jillette’s fire-eating prowess takes a bow as well, complete with his lengthy introduction, which drew a standing ovation from many in attendance.

AFTER TOO MUCH TIME AWAY FROM THE STAGE, comedian Maz Jobrani is beyond excited to be traveling again with his Things Are Looking Bright tour and especially to return to Las Vegas to perform at the Laugh Factory at Tropicana Las Vegas, Sept. 3-5. The Iranian-born comic, who has appeared in TV shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and Last Man Standing, managed to stay productive during a difficult year by focusing on his educational podcast Back to School and pushing forward with big-time TV projects. But now it’s time to let the laughs take over and interact with a live audience again. Plenty of comedians were able to stay busy over the last year and a half and you did some virtual and drive-in shows before returning to the stand-up stage. What were those experiences like? I remember when (the pandemic) first hit and I started doing some Instagram Live shows, and it wasn’t really a show. It was just me yapping away about whatever was going on that day and people would comment or put heart emojis. I was quickly reminded that as comedians, we need to hear laughs because it affects the rhythm of how we talk. This was not stand-up comedy, it was just me kind of yelling at my phone and talking about life. I remember seeing John Legend or Chris Martin doing a set by their piano at home and I was so jealous that they don’t need to hear any claps or laughter, they can just play and move on to the next song. The drive-in shows were interesting because you do a show and it’s projected on a screen behind you, and people are in their cars so you can’t hear them laughing, but I realized the key was telling the audience if they like the joke, to honk their horns. That really helped. Did you get a feel for how badly audiences needed comedy during those first few shows back? I flew to Arizona where the lockdown wasn’t as intense and they were doing limited capacity shows, and I was there a week after the election so I knew it would be a divided audience and I’d have that to deal with. Also, half the audience had masks on and the other half was eating. Some people were uncomfortable, but for the most part,

everybody really just wanted to laugh because it had been such a stressful year. Do you think these odd performing experiences changed the way you perform? I think it’s always in your mind that you’ve got to get in the trenches to be good at those. Comedians that are worth their weight really put in the time, show up and perform everywhere they can. You hear stories about starting out in the side room of a strip club, then you go to the side room of a coffee shop, and when you get to the punchline, the barista is making a cappuccino and you can hear the foam over the punchline. So this reminded me of my beginnings in that way. You’ve played the landmark Laugh Factory at the Trop a few times before. What do you love about this Vegas venue? It’s a great club and people just seem to find it. Harry Basil runs that club and he has a green room with a karaoke machine, and it’s kind of like the bat signal because he puts the word out to other performers around town to come back there after their shows. I think one time I found myself backstage with George Wallace, Brian Regan and Brian Scolaro doing karaoke. But just for the ordinary comedy fan, it’s a great place.

What’s new with Back to School? I was leaning into that a lot during the pandemic, and that was something that started when my kids would ask me questions I didn’t have the answers to, so rather than Googling everything, I’m bringing in experts and learning. It’s a great excuse to talk to interesting people, a cave diver who goes underneath caves to find different organisms, a guy who helped land the rover on Mars. It continues to be a big focus but I’ve also been developing things for TV, an animation project I’m trying to find a home for (that’s) based on an immigrant family that loves America but America doesn’t love them back. It’s still a comedy. I’ve been lucky to tour all over and have people from different backgrounds learn about my (background), so doing a TV show based on that would be great. Songbird Lorena Peril absolutely astounds with her vocal capabilities, belting out perfect-pitch versions of “It’s A Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World,” “Roxanne” and “A Little Party.” Peril also plays host for the evening, introducing the ladies and various vignettes but also playing naughty temptress and teaser of audience members. She’s playful, talented and shows plenty of her own skin in beautiful outfits. Silks. Watch as another Fantasy lady stuns with absolutely awe-inspiring athleticism, shimmying up and down the silks in beautiful aerial numbers. A sofa. Sliding across, around and on top of the soft-fabric covering a boudoir-type sofa, another lovely Fantasy lady shows off her assets and talents in one darn sexy number that really gets the crowd going. “Halftime” show. Giving the ladies a chance to take a breather and get ready for the next round of dance numbers, comedy magician—often seen on Pawn Stars and America’s Got Talent—Murray the Magician astounds with some stand-up and really impressive tricks during a couple of intermissions. His newspaper trick to the sounds of Prince’s “Purple Rain” and his lady-in-abox trick will really confound and delight. Gloves, fishnet stockings, sparkly tops, corsets and bras. All the ladies enter the stage during each vignette wearing beautiful costumes and then you get what you came for at Fantasy—to watch them take it all off. It’s a quick way to get those libidos going, but there’s a bona fide and seductive art to the way they undress—dating back to the days of early burlesque. Fantasy. The show has two decades of performances in Vegas under its garter belt. One of 2021’s returning shows on the Las Vegas Strip is also one of its longest running productions. Purple Reign: The Prince Tribute Show, voted All-Time Best Tribute Show by the readers of Las Vegas Weekly (a sister publication of Las Vegas Magazine) last year, made its triumphant return to the Legends in Concert Theater at the Tropicana Las Vegas over Memorial Day Weekend, another solid signal that live entertainment is back in Las Vegas. It’s been a regular stop for Prince fans for more than two decades, and the show’s creator, star and co-producer Jason Tenner is beyond excited to get back to the business of rock ’n’ roll. Purple Reign has reached Vegas institution status. By my count you’re about 25 years into this, right? I started out in 1997, so yeah, about a quarter century. I’ve got a couple gray hairs popping in here and there. But I feel lucky. I feel blessed. I’ve worked hard, I don’t cancel shows, I show up every day and give it everything and all the guys I’ve got with me feel the same way. We all want to be as badass as we can be. It is a long time, and so many different eras. We started out at this college club across from UNLV called Tom & Jerry’s, with dollar beer pitcher night, so you can imagine how that went. Those were pretty wild times.

You moved the show from Westgate to Tropicana in 2017. How did it change and evolve at its new home? Being back on the Strip was a very cool thing. We also took on (producing) partners in Red Mercury at that time, and that’s been a really good relationship. We already had the bigger stage set and all the props, so we took all that with us, and before the pandemic started we had added a second cast. So there was another guy doing Prince a couple nights a week, and we would tour the show as well. What’s it like sharing that great, classic theater with another phenomenal tribute show, Legends in Concert? I think it’s a great pairing and sometimes people come to see both shows. That’s just a really great show and they’ve been around even longer than I have.

What kind of changes have you made to Purple Reign for its comeback? There are so many great Prince songs and I always like to put some of the b-sides in, and the band knows all the major b-sides and of course all the hits. And there’s some new Prince music coming out, so that’s something we’ll add and learn if those new songs catch on. But I like to do “She’s Always In My Hair,” “Erotic City,” “If I Was Your Girlfriend” and (deep cuts) like those, so it’s not just all “1999” and “Little

Red Corvette.” We’re adding new clothes and costumes, too, and I’ll probably change my wig style up a bit. Did all the downtime from the pandemic change your perspective on Prince’s music or allow you to dig into that material in a different way? Actually, I didn’t listen to Prince or play Prince. I wrote a couple of new songs and released one in October and one in March, and I have my warehouse studio, so I’ve been making music and music videos and just working on projects. I stayed far away from the Prince universe and it was kind of a relief not to think about it, and now going back, there’s a renewed energy and everyone is so totally hyped to do it again. Stepping away from it cleared my mind. You played some shows in California and Florida. How did it feel to be back onstage after such a long time away? It felt a little foreign, to be honest. I got winded and I never used to get winded before. It was strange but still super fun. It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do, to sing and dance and do something with music, and my band is all players. Everyone is so excited. When you’re an artist or a performer, it becomes part of your identity and I’m sure there are a lot of vocations where that’s the case, but it’s so strong for entertainers.

This is Meow Wolf’s largest undertaking to date and is Area15’s largest tenant, spreading across 52,000 square feet of space. More than 325 artists—graphic artists, painters, architects, playwrights, actors, audio engineers, musicians, sculptors, software developers, lighting designers, technicians, visual artists and more, some local to Vegas, and some from around the world— created hundreds of unique projects that help make up the sprawling Omega Mart. So just what is this immersive experience that allows and even encourages visitors to touch and explore everything—heck, even climb, crawl and slide—throughout the space? Those that want to delve into the story behind this extraordinary supermarket will find a core narrative—that there’s a nefarious company called Dramcorp that makes all the products using a mythical ingredient called “the source.” Using portals throughout the store, you can explore Dramcorp’s factory and corporate offices to dive deeper. Using an RFID card, given to each guest upon entering, you can actually unlock computers and files and try to uncover the mystery. Stumbling upon portals into other dimensions is par for the course at Omega Mart. Throughout, one room can lead into another world; trippy experiences saturate the immersive exhibit and guests are encouraged to dive deeper and deeper, physically and mentally. Parts unknown, surreal landscapes, storytelling, stretches of the imagination—all fair descriptions from the Meow Wolf team and the many artists who helped create this space. And that just touches upon the Omega Mart experience that is playful and fun, yet intellectual and mind-bending—a reality that gladly, and exceptionally, seems more like a dream.

Specific elements have changed and evolved over time, but the Blue Men always use basic elements like paint, marshmallows and PVC pipes for their absurdist set pieces.
