From the Editor That’s Entertainment!
I recently attended the first performance of Cirque du Soleil’s Mystère since the pandemic shutdown of 2020. As I descended the escalator from the Treasure Island parking garage, I briefly wondered what the turnout would be like. Were audiences as hungry for the return of entertainment as I thought? I’m happy to report that the answer is a resounding “yes!” The line for the first show was so long that I joked with my plusone that I felt like we were in a different hotel by the time we reached the end of the line. The performance was unlike any I’ve ever attended here; the sense of gratitude from the audience (and the performers) was palpable. As the cast took curtain calls at the end and the audience erupted with a standing ovation, it was obvious how emotional this was for all concerned. It’s an experience I’ll not soon forget. But that’s just the beginning for visitors starved for live entertainment. Cirque also brought back “O” to Bellagio, and there are some surprises in store (“Simply Indescribable,” p. 34). In addition, longtime Strip entertainer Mac King returns, changing venues from Harrah’s to Excalibur. Editor-at-large Brock Radke scored an interview with King to talk about what bringing back his popular family magic show means to him (“Magical Move,” p. 30). Speaking
of family favorites, two other longtime productions are also back—Tournament of Kings at Excalibur (Joust For Fun,” p. 51) and Legends in Concert at Tropicana Las Vegas (“Seeing is Believing,” p. 13). And for fans of drag shows, Area15, a fun new hot spot, has debuted Draganza (“Fierce, Fun and Fab,” p. 12). Time to get to ordering some tickets! Don’t forget to get some sustenance while you’re seeing all these shows. Italian restaurant celebrates Milan neighborhood Anyone watching Stanley Tucci’s wonderful CNN series, Searching For Italy, is no doubt longing to visit some of the regions Tucci highlights for their amazing cuisine. And since some international travel is still on hold, you’re going to have to be patient. But in the meantime, you can get the next best thing at multiple restaurants in Las Vegas, including Brera Osteria, a celebration of the food of Milan’s Brera neighborhood. Brera features seating that offers plenty of people-watching opportunities at St. Mark’s Square in The Grand Canal Shoppes. It instantly puts you in a European frame of mind, allowing you to relax and immerse yourself in the culture

of the region, brought to delicious life by chef Angelo Auriana. Start off with a classic Aperol spritz (how could you not?) and work your way to other spirit-laden delights like the blood orange martini, which uses Ketel One vodka and Cointreau, and the Via Brera, a muscle-bound beast combining barrel-aged Whistlepig rye, Calvados Daron 5 yrs, Cynar liqueur and Drambuie, all sprinkled with nutmeg. Whatever appetizer you opt for, the smiles will come in waves. The beef tartare is one of the best on the Strip, using American wagyu beef, anchovies, capers, shallots and mayonnaise (and
toasted crostini to spread on), while the burratina is a vegetarian’s dream, with roasted beets, mushrooms, green beans and frisée. Pasta fans will love the tortelli, stuffed with braised veal and served with butter, thyme and roasting jus. The perfect sea scallops are served with horseradish potatoes and a veal reduction. Vegetarian? Try charred cauliflower, served with couscous, almonds and bagna càuda. Make sure to try the tiramisu for dessert. You’ve never seen a version like this—perfectly round and contained; it’s almost like a cookie, served with a thinly sliced piece of milk chocolate that surrounds it when served. –Ken Miller

Fierce, Fun and Fab There’s a lot of charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent happening inside The Portal at Area15 as The Fabulous Draganza, a Fierce Variety Show celebrates the world of drag featuring stars from hit TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race. Drag star Alexis Mateo brings Tejano-music queen Selena to life. Clad in the singer’s famous shining purple outfit, Matteo nails the moves and mannerisms of Selena, lip-syncing her biggest hits. Fans of chart-topping star Doja Cat get a special treat with drag queen Coco Montrese playing the part to perfection. A Flowing Fantasy When you think of Las Vegas’ top tourist attractions, it makes the list every single time. We’re talking about the famed Fountains of Bellagio, a dancing fountain show that’s an epic feat in design and dazzling production as more than 200 water-emitting devices spread across 1,000 feet rocket water nearly 500 feet into the air. The attraction animates the water, so guests watch choreographed “dances” to hit pop songs like Cher’s “Believe,” Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk,”

Seeing Is Believing
Tropicana Las Vegas production brings icons to life There are bragging rights, and there are serious bragging rights. Legends in Concert has the latter, being the longest-running show currently operating on the Las Vegas Strip. If you take away the pandemic shutdown (which shut down every single show), Legends is nearing its 40th straight year in Las Vegas, a singularly amazing achievement in a city not well-known for longevity. The tribute show to music’s greats may have taken some time off, but it’s lost none of its energy or entertainment value. As an added bonus, the show is now hosted by legendary drag queen Frank Marino, who shares something in common with Legends: He’s been performing on the Las Vegas Strip for nearly

40 years as well. He’s a great addition as Joan Rivers, changing costumes between each tribute act and providing hilarious one-liners. What really puts Legends above others like it is that everything is live—the band, the backup singers, and the impersonators themselves. No lip-synching here. When you hear Vivia Ross Scott come out as Tina Turner, belting out such classics as “Disco Inferno,” “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” and “Proud Mary,” you’re hearing the real deal—or, at least, that’s how it feels. Can’t wait until October for the return of Rod Stewart to his Caesars Palace residency? No worries—John Anthony ably fills the fab Brit’s shoes, showing off some great pipes and moves
as he croons “Rhythm of My Heart,” Some Guys Have All the Luck” and “Maggie May.” And it really doesn’t feel like a night at Legends unless you hear some Elvis Presley. Matt Lewis’ version of The King will have you swearing you’re seeing the real thing, right down to the iconic white jumpsuit, moves, and the humor Elvis was well-known for during his legendary International residency. There’s also a great mid-section, showing off the talents of the band and backup singers who help make this show unforgettable. Italian Culinary Treats Fresh, savory and sensational southern Italian coastal cuisine shines at Osteria Costa. The casually cool spot is reminiscent of quaint villages along Italy’s coasts and the food is a reflection of the rustic traditions of simple yet flavor-filled recipes. Perfect examples include house-made pasta favorites like the linguine and clams tossed with garlic, chiles and lemon and the shrimp linguine with white wine and lemon. Achieving His Goal
Golden Knights’ Ryan Reaves creates local brewing company Adam Coates and Vegas Golden Knights star Ryan Reaves met in school when they were eight years old. Their friendship has remained strong and, over the past three years, they’ve found a way to work together on something they are both passionate about: beer. After coming to Las Vegas, NHL star Reaves saw the craft beer scene developing and an opportunity to create 7Five Brewing Company with his longtime friend. Coates said, “I’ve worked in beer since the start of my career and this seemed like a natural next step and to get to work with Ryan was icing on the cake.” The name of the company represents the only number Reaves has worn, and the beer names

signify stages of his career. “7Five is the story of my career—it’s not just my story, it’s for everyone in some aspect or another,” Reaves says. Training Day, the initial offering, is an easy drinking golden ale with a mild hop finish. It was followed by Dawn Breaker, a crisp, golden lager with a smooth finish representing showing up before everyone else. The next release was Reaves’ go-to beer style: Shiver Giver IPA bursting with hop flavor and aroma balanced with a touch of malty sweetness. Grim Reaver, the latest, is described by Reaves as: “channeling our greatness, focused on the goal. It’s one of my favorites of all time, smooth and rich with notes of dark chocolate and roasted coffee.” While
not part of the main four, there’s also Showtime Blonde Ale, a drinkable blonde that is an exclusive partnership with MGM Resorts, available at select locations throughout their Las Vegas properties, signifying being in the Show. The beers are brewed by local Able Baker Brewing. Coates said, “We were really impressed with what they were brewing. We have an idea, come to them with flavors and they work with us to bring it to life. It’s been a great partnership from day one.” While Grim Reaver is the final beer in the narrative, Coates said, “We’re definitely looking to do more in the future that will tie in with the other beers in the lineup.” –Bob Barnes

Caring for the ocean’s creatures in the desert In 2011, a Brooklyn, N.Y., native moved to the desert to take care of ocean animals. Doesn’t make too much sense, right? Well, if you’ve been to Golden Nugget downtown, you’ll discover it does. Alissa Cardone is the life sciences curator for the 75,000-gallon aquarium inside Chart House—one of the property’s restaurants—and the 200,000-gallon Shark Tank inside the famed pool complex. “That’s what my parents asked when I told them I’m moving to Vegas,” she says. “They said, ‘You’re moving to the middle of the desert to take care of fish?’ And that’s actually what makes this so unique; people can come and see over 60 different species of animals in one spot. We have never closed our tank to be geographically from one area, so all of our animals in the tanks are from all over the world.” And it’s Cardone’s responsibility to care for each and every one. She’s had a lifelong passion for marine animals, even volunteering when she
was a young teen at the New York Aquarium. She eventually worked there for six years as a wild animal keeper. She moved to Vegas to join the team at Golden Nugget, starting as a biologist, and now she runs the whole program and department. “Now, I am responsible for overseeing all of the care of all of the animals, the exhibits, staff and life support, which is the filtrations and plumbing and electrical work that help run these aquariums,” she says. Cardone has also clocked more than 4,000 dives—her job requires her to get into both the aquarium and the shark tank every day. “The reward is working with such a diverse collection of animals,” she says. “Interestingly enough, in our facility we have animals that easily have lived double their life that they would in the wild. Our sharks only make it until 10 in the wild—I have 20-year-old sharks in that tank. A lot of that comes with our being devoted to animal welfare.” –Kiko Miyasato

They are so good, but don’t think you can dust off the entire vase all by yourself—you will definitely need all your dining companions to eat up, too.

Snacking has never seemed so nice A mini-trend from before the pandemic gained a lot of traction among home chefs during 2020’s stay-at-home exhortations, and now that Vegas is back in full swing, it’s time to revisit the charcuterie board and a few of the places that offer those laid-back treats. Although the format varies, generally you’ll find cured meats, cheeses, crackers and bread, and other bites like olives, jam, honey and peppers. (And add wine or a cocktail— that makes the whole experience even better.) Prices for meat and cheese boards vary greatly, from $7 up to $44 or more, so you are sure to find one that suits your fancy while you’re in Vegas. The charcuterie board at Hearthstone at Red Rock Resort pairs a variety of meats and cheeses, fennel crisps, and fig and foie gras jam. Drizzle a little maple-bourbon honey over your bite and it might seem heavenly. (Plus this option is very reasonably priced, which makes it taste even better.) Italian restaurant Bottiglia at Green Valley Ranch has three sizes to choose from when you order the antipasti misti platter, at several price points. Nosh on marinated peppers, meats, cheeses and other goodies. And if you are around for happy hour, you’ll want to take advantage of the
ultra-affordable charcuterie board (more dollars for cocktails is what we say!). The chef will choose your meat and cheese, and accent with olives and grapes. Julian Serrano’s Lago at Bellagio has one of the most beautiful dining rooms around, and a lakeside view, perfect for gazing at while you indulge in an antipasto salumi platter, with prosciutto di Parma, porcetta, pistachio mortadella (sounds decadent, doesn’t it?), Parmigiano cheese and the crisp carta musica bread. For a relaxed bite, Libertine Social, the gastropub from chef Shawn McClain, provides a chill environment that’s perfect for hanging with friends. There are plenty of apps that work well in that scenario, from garlic hummus with balloon bread to prosciutto and Parm flatbread, but if you want a cheesy bite, just order the cheese board, which also come with prosciutto, marinated olives, herb flatbread and cheeses, of course.

Mac King brings his comedy and illusions to Excalibur By Brock Radke
One of the Las Vegas Strip’s longest-running headliners made a big move last month while bringing back his show after the pandemic forced a long pause in production. Mac King’s seminal family-friendly comedy and magic show has been a prominent part of the entertainment landscape for two decades at
when I do my trick with the tent we can sort of feel like we’re out in the wilderness. There’s a lot more lighting and the stage is a little more narrow but it’s deeper front to back. I feel at home already.

How did it feel to get back onstage again and do your thing after 16 months without a show in Vegas? The very first show, I was backstage waiting for them to say, “Please welcome Mac King!” I was standing there with my business partner and he says, “Have fun out there,” and they start the music and the audience is clapping and stomping, and I start bawling. My partner says, “Dude, you better stop crying before they say to come out!” I was just so relieved and happy to be back. The show went OK and the audience seemed to be really happy to be doing it again, but the next show was busier and even better. On the third day, I felt like I was in the groove. I didn’t feel like me until then, so that was great, a big sigh of relief. When we spoke earlier this year, you were talking about dropping in at

some local comedy clubs to sort of shake the rust off before reopening your show. I did end up doing that. I went downtown to the Delirious Comedy Club at Downtown Grand and did 20 minutes just to get in front of people. It was pretty fun but not as satisfying as I’d hoped, although that was partly about just being rusty. Your new home on the Strip is the Thunderland Showroom at Excalibur, which is a very different place from the theater at Harrah’s where you performed for more than 20 years. I’m definitely used to that classic Vegas showroom and this has a more modern feel. We’ve got that big video wall backdrop and I’m really looking forward to exploring that and making it a bigger part of the show. Maybe
And obviously Excalibur feels like a great fit for your show because it’s one of the most popular family destinations in Las Vegas. It’s a really good fit and I’m guessing it’s still one of the busiest intersections in Las Vegas, at Tropicana and Las Vegas Boulevard. Plus you have Luxor and Mandalay Bay linked by those indoor passageways. How was the audience responding during your first week of shows? It’s clear that it’s not just me who is happy to be back. People are so happy to be in an audience, to be sitting in the dark shoulder to shoulder, clapping and laughing again. The communal feeling of being at a show can be really healing. I don’t want to get too sappy about it but people have been really missing that. You started the Don’t Everybody Leave YouTube podcast last year with some of your Vegas magic and comedy pals. Are you going to keep

it going now that you’re busy with performances again? I think so. My buddies want to keep doing it and I want to keep doing it, and it’s not a moneymaker and I don’t know how many tickets it will help sell, but it’s really fun. Initially, we did it virtually as just a group of close friends who couldn’t get together anymore, but now we’ve done the last couple shows in person and it’s been a lot of fun. It’s a different dynamic being in the same room, and we’ve had some great guests recently like Clint Holmes and magician Jeff McBride.

By Ken Miller When Las Vegas Magazine put the word out for nominations for its Hall of Fame class (eligible nominators included Carrot Top, Wayne Newton, Wolfgang Puck, David Copperfield and more) for 2021, it was an awkward time. Because the process began late in 2020, nearly all the nominees had not yet come back to the Strip, and our Hall of Fame differs from most others in that it focuses on things our readers can enjoy right now. But our nominators were undeterred. This year’s class, announced in January, is incredibly strong, and we’re happy to report all have since returned, including one of the Strip’s most beloved shows of all time: Cirque du Soleil’s “O” at Bellagio. Ask anyone who’s seen “O” to describe it, and they’ll most likely open their mouth to speak, take a pause, think a bit, and come up with something like, “It’s just so beautiful!” It really is almost impossible to put the experience of “O” into words, and

that’s kind of the point. After all, the show does not follow a linear storyline—there’s no hero, no heroine, no climactic scene that wraps everything together. It’s more a series of elegant, highly athletic moments, peppered with bits that seem like they were pulled from another dimension. Oh, and there are clowns, too! Did we mention that the activity described above isn’t just happening in front of you, but above you and behind you? Oh, and did we mention it’s all taking place around a stage that transforms instantly into a deep pool? Add to all this an incredible score performed live and it’s almost too much to take in at times. There’s a reason serious fans of this show have seen it countless times; every time you go, you see something you missed the last time. And the cast and crew can’t wait to bring “O” back to life. “We are thrilled to be returning to performances!” said Pierre Parisien, “O”’s senior artistic director. “The entire team at ‘O’ is excited, and the energy is incredibly high as we look forward to entertaining audiences again.” Best of all, those who have seen “O” before and can’t wait to see their favorite moments again can rest easy: Even with the long layover and new safety rules in place for most shows, “O” will remain more or less intact—and probably even better than you remember. “Guests can expect to see the extremely high quality of human performance that ‘O’ is known for,” Parisien said. “We have made some minor modifications in order to distance our performers from the audience for now. Time to let off steam? There’s no better place for that than Adventuredome, Circus Circus’ indoor amusement park. Rock, spin, soar and speed with roller coasters and exciting rides, head to the midway for games galore or take the kids to a 4D show—all under the pink glow of Adventuredome’s rose-hued canopy.
We’re big believers that laughing at least once a day is the secret to a long life. And to get today’s dose of laughs and then some, it’s hard to beat Carrot Top. He’s one of the longest-running performers in Las Vegas, and for a very good reason: For an hour and change, the prop comic extraordinaire throws everything but the kitchen sink (OK, sometimes a sink may be involved) at the audience in the hopes that something will stick. There’s so many laughs here, you may not remember any one joke!
Get a real rush as you are whisked through New York-New York on the Big Apple Coaster. After a 180-foot climb and a 76-foot drop, travel around the exterior and through the interior of the resort at up to 67 mph, twisting, dropping another 144 feet, going through a 180-degree spiral and a half-loop maneuver. Woo-hoo! You must be 54 inches to ride the coaster, but if you aren’t, head down to the arcade, where there’s plenty to do at any height.

Light it up! In downtown Las Vegas, Fremont Street Experience features the behemoth overhead attraction known as Viva Vision. The light and music show was upgraded earlier this year, and now features 16.4 million pixels. Numerous videos, with music by artists from Imagine Dragons to Linkin Park, play up to eight times a night, and now during the day, on what is the largest video screen in the world. Visitors can also head to SlotZilla to try out the zipline that swooshes people from one end to the other, either sitting, or superhero-style. Height, weight and age restrictions apply.
Get the experience of drifting through the canals in Venice when you take a ride in the gondolas at The Venetian. Although it’s cool for the kids, it’s also perfect for adults. Not only are the visuals sweet, you’ll hear gondoliers serenading you during the ride down the man-made canals throughout the Grand Canal Shoppes, making the ride just that much more interesting. It’s been named one of the most romantic things to do in Vegas, and we’re sure your sweetheart will agree. Ah, mi amore.
Bellagio is home to some of the Strip’s finest restaurants, but one we find ourselves revisiting time and time again is Harvest by Roy Ellamar. The focus here on sustainable ingredients is admirable, but Ellamar backs up his strong environmental stances with some seriously delicious food. Just wait until you dig into appetizers like pork belly lettuce wraps or main courses like a half-chicken brined in local ale and hay smoked. Best of all? You can do all this and feel very, very good about yourself!

It was understandable that the food community got seriously amped about International Smoke, a collaboration between Michael Mina and Ayesha Curry. But the hype was well-deserved. This salute to fire—the origin of all cooking—just keeps the hits coming, from Mama Mina’s falafel (you’ll never want another) to smoke St. Louis cut pork ribs, the creativity here is just off the charts. And the Lilikoi Mai Tai, served in a Spam can, is already one of our favorite cocktails.
Take your Mexican food experience up a notch—or two—at Javier’s at Aria. In addition to a collection of high-end tequilas, Javier’s boasts a huge menu, using only sustainable seafood and the highest grade of Prime Angus beef.

For one of the best combinations of food and incomparable views, try a meal at Lago by Julian Serrano. While looking at the Fountains of Bellagio through floor-to-ceiling windows, enjoy Serrano’s novel take on Italian food: small plates. This gives you the ability to try more without filling up quickly. Osso buco, potato gnocchi, tomato braised beef meatballs, bass-ricotta stuffed ravioli ... you can have it all.
Anxious to get back to shopping after sheltering in place? Head straight to Miracle Mile Shops, a 1.2-mile-long enclosed mall with more than 160 stores and restaurants. Head to MAC Cosmetics or Sephora for beauty products, and H&M, French Connection, Guess or Desigual for the latest fashions. What was originally supposed to be just a pop-up restaurant at Red Rock Resort quickly became so popular that it’s now a permanent installation. And one bite at Marc Vetri’s Osteria Fiorella. will tell you why: It’s all about good, satisfying comfort food here, as well as a whole lot of personality. From Sal’s meatballs (with whipped ricotta) to ravioli “Francoboli” tre formaggi (with oyster mushrooms), there’s something here for everyone. Save room for dessert!

F1 drivers of the future can test their skill levels at Pole Position Raceway, an indoor facility where souped-up electric karts powered by 18 horsepower motors reach speeds of up to 45 mph. As long as you’re at least 48 inches tall, prepare for some serious competition—after getting the hang of the physics in your first race, you’ll be aching to get back out on the course, trying to shave tenths of a second off your previous time. Well, you’re in Vegas. What do you do now? In Las Vegas Magazine’s ongoing Day Planner series, we’ll help you figure out where and when to maximize your time. In this installment, we’ll talk about your options if you are staying near Tropicana and Las Vegas Boulevard South. Big tips: Wear walking shoes, because although these places appear pretty close to each other, you’ll still be getting your exercise; and make reservations and get tickets for restaurants, attractions and shows in advance. Allow 15 or 20 minutes between destinations for walking. 8 a.m.: Grab the first coffee of the day at your hotel. Although many

hotels don’t include a coffee maker in the room, there’s always a Starbucks or restaurant that lets you get coffee to go, such as Primrose at Park MGM. 10 a.m.: Although you could make a reservation at one of the restaurants in your hotel, we suggest you take a walk to the picturesque Italian marketplace Eataly Las Vegas at Park MGM (702.730.7617). Get breakfast sandwiches and cornetti (an Italian croissant-like pastry) at Cafe Pasticceria and coffee at Caffé Lavazza next door. Sit at one of the center tables and enjoy Eataly’s atrium atmosphere. 11 a.m.-1 p.m.: Wander through The Park on your way back and check out the statues scattered throughout, including Bliss Dance, a 40-foot-tall sculpture that lights up at night. If you are a gambler, stay at Park MGM and spend some time at the machines.

Important note: it’s the first smoke-free casino in Vegas. 1-2 p.m.: The Big Apple Coaster at New York-New York (702.740.6969) takes off from back in the cityscape area and features a 180-degree twist and dive, plus a 230-foot drop. Weather conditions may affect hours. 2-3 p.m.: After that ride, let your tummy settle as you amble down Tropicana Avenue to Hooters at OYO Hotel & Casino (866.584.6687), where you can indulge in several styles of chicken wings. But there are a ton of other
options, including burgers and the possibly shareable Lots-A-Tots, loaded with cheese, bacon, green onions and sour cream. OMG! Healthier choices include salads and steamed shrimp. 3-5 p.m.: Head to your hotel to nap; or head to Excalibur or Tropicana Las Vegas to gamble for a while. 5-9:30 p.m.: Time for drinks and dinner! Indulge in a craft cocktail at Trago at Tropicana (only on Fridays and Saturdays) while you are waiting for your dinner reservation. We suggest the Negroni Twist. The casual atmosphere at Tom’s Urban at New York-New York (702.740.6766) is perfect for pre-show drinks and dinner; the street tacos are pretty bomb. We’d suggest the loaded tots, but hey, didn’t you just have that at Hooters for lunch? If you are a beer fan, Tom’s has a boatload of choices; and recently introduced a few new cocktails. 10 p.m.: Entertainment is back! In this corner of Vegas, Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club (866.740.7711) is open at MGM Grand, and although during the pandemic it relocated to the A and B showrooms to accommodate social distancing, it has now returned to its home in The Underground.. Garrett features a number of hot comedians and occasionally appears himself. (The 10 p.m. show is only on Fridays and Saturdays, but there’s also an 8 p.m. show Monday through Thursday.)

It combines the tireless work of archaeologists, explorers, historians, divers and scientists. Every piece must be meticulously restored, preserved, cataloged and researched. Who was the owner? What purpose did it serve? How does it further enlighten our understanding of the era? All of this and more are revealed as you delve deeper into their stories. Last year, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition underwent a major refresh. New technologies have been installed, along with a photo

station and props from the award-winning feature film. Additional enhancements were also brought on board throughout the year, including the ability to host private events and receptions. And guests are now permitted to take their own photographs within the attraction, a fabulous milestone.
