From the Editor The Magic Continues
It’s a very good thing that I’m such a fan of America’s Got Talent, NBC’s reality competition show. Not only do I get to see some seriously entertaining acts, I get to see the future of entertainment for Las Vegas. After all, the show has already produced many of the Strip’s current big draws. One of the biggest is Shin Lim, a magician so good he won twice—on AGT’s regular show and on its Champions edition. As Shin Lim prepares to return to his successful Las Vegas residency at The Mirage, he took some time to talk to editor at large Brock Radke (“Always Growing,” p. 28). You’ll definitely want to check this Q&A out, especially if you’ve seen Shin Lim’s show before. And there’s plenty more entertainment where that came from. Carrot Top continues his long-running hit show at Luxor (“Those Wonderful Toys,” p. 8); and Las Vegas Magazine has added a new element to help you plan your future trips here. There’s no end to Carrot Top’s creativity, or the laughs you’ll experience at one of his shows. “From birth to mirth, I love seeing the process, to make it and see it work is like your baby,” Carrot Top explained to Las Vegas Magazine. “I never cared about being labeled
a prop comic as long as ‘comic’ is in there. … But years ago I was in a junkyard and I saw a little mini-toilet. What’s funny about a mini-toilet? So I took it and figured I’d come up with something.” That gag? Maybe one of his most famous: a plate for bulimics so they can eat and throw up. Golden Nugget steakhouse deserves the highest honors Sometimes the evidence of a restaurant’s quality is just overwhelming. And in the case of Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse at Golden Nugget, it’s case closed. The world-class restaurant is known across the country, in Atlantic City, Houston and Lake Charles, La., but its Las Vegas location is the recipient of too many honors to list here, from Gayot to OpenTable to USA Today. And one visit here will be all you need to be convinced that the hype is well-deserved. To begin with, the décor at Vic & Anthony’s is beyond reproach. Every detail befits a classic steakhouse experience, from the dark woods to

the well-appointed table setting to the service. Before beginning your experience here, avail yourself of the menu’s extensive wine list (one of the largest in the city) or a classic cocktail like an Old-Fashioned or a martini. It’s a great beginning to your evening. Appetizers are just what you’d expect at a classic steakhouse: the seafood tower, jumbo shrimp, fresh oysters on the half-shell, jumbo lump crab cake, and steak tartare, the latter really shining here—prepared with filet mignon, puffed rice chips, pickle shallots, horseradish aioli and a cured egg yolk. Yum! A true highlight
here is the roasted bacon, highlighted by bourbon barrel maple syrup and a root beer glaze. This Vic & Anthony’s recently added a wagyu beef program to its menu, and even if you’re a big fan of porterhouses and ribeyes, you’ll really want to dig into cuts like the A5 Japanese wagyu filet mignon. So delectable, flavorful and unique! The dessert menu is definitely worth a look, especially In the Round, a large chocolate sphere over which hot caramel sauce is poured, melting away the chocolate and revealing a treat inside. A Lot of Beats Loud, thumping bass beats will fill the night air at Area15’s 32,000-square-foot, outdoor event space known as A-Lot when the arts and entertainment district welcomes its new A Series events throughout the summer. A-Lot plays host to EDM DJs every Saturday night, including one of the musical genre’s pioneers, Paul Oakenfold (pictured), on July 10. The A Series event is open to those 18 and older; however, those 21 and older can enjoy a pop-up beer garden. The festival-like experience continues with Canadian DJ and producer A-Trak performing July 17 and L.A.based electro-house DJ and producer Elephante, who performs July 24. VIP packages are available; masks must be worn when not eating or drinking. “Hosting events such as A Series is exactly what A-Lot was designed to do and what we envisioned since the beginning,” Winston Fisher, CEO for Area15 said in a recent release. “The space seamlessly fuse art with music, while the Las Vegas Strip provides a picturesque backdrop. So Many Dishes! When eating dim sum, the only thing better than the dish you’re eating is one you’re going to eat next. Some Las Vegas hotels have pretty cool front yards. Bellagio has its iconic fountains and The Venetian has its faux canals. And while those sights are impressive, they don’t hold a candle to the original, free large-scale entertainment attraction—the fire-spewing volcano in front of The Mirage. For more than 30 years, the volcano has attracted children and adults alike with its booming explosions, fireballs, faux lava and flames that are so hot you can practically feel them across the boulevard. Excellent food tops off sweet steakhouse vibe Here’s a little tip for you: Head off-Strip to the Suncoast resort in the upscale community of Summerlin in the western reaches of the Vegas Valley, and you’ll enjoy one of the most relaxing, delicious dinners you’ve had in a long time. The Suncoast’s SC Prime Steakhouse has a casual, intimate vibe with attentive staff and soaring, floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over the valley. Get a reservation just before sunset and you’ll have a gorgeous view of lights stretching across the horizon. It’s a little magical. Start with a classic cocktail like a lemon drop, or a nice glass of wine, and you’ll find they go nicely with the sounds of jazz and Sinatra in the background. The menu here is focused on

classic, quality steakhouse fare, and that starts with the appetizers. You can enjoy crab cakes with a red pepper remoulade or prime rib crostini, with shaved prime rib, horseradish spread and tender, melt-in-your mouth sautéed onions. The BLT wedge salad is crisp with a chunk of flavorful blue cheese and teardrop tomatoes. Sub in the house-made white French dressing and it couldn’t be better. And even the beef broth for the French onion soup is long-simmered in-house. Steaks include custom-aged Creekstone Farms Prime ribeye and New York cuts, prime rib in two sizes, and a striking pan-roasted, 24-ounce, bone-in ribeye with cilantro garlic
butter. All the sauces here are house-made, so indulge in peppercorn cream or a red wine reduction. Other specialties include the Chilean sea bass, served with white miso sauce and bok choy. And the sides and veg are delish! Although the chef can create a special vegetarian dish (I recently enjoyed vegan empanadas with a tomatoey dipping sauce that was to die for), I’d recommend ordering up a few sides; the butter-whipped potatoes are so silky, and the huge grilled asparagus so very tender. Bring On the Yum When the Monte Carlo transformed into Park MGM several years ago, longtime locals favorite Diablo’s Cantina was displaced. Fortunately for the Mexican restaurant’s many fans, it found a new home at Luxor (it’s even got a second at The Mirage now). So, what was it about Diablo’s that people missed so much? The guac, the nachos (seriously one of the best iterations you will ever come across), the vixen chicken and shrimp, beef and barbacoa enchiladas, and, of course, charismatic chef Saul Ortiz. The tacos come in varieties like vampire-style birria beef, al pastor chicken, carnitas and a delightfully spicy rajas and mushroom. Sides like Mexico City street corn, black beans and fried plantains bring even more flavor. Plenty of margaritas will cool you off (unless you want it spicy, because those versions are certainly available); the Chupacabra features mezcal and cilantro for a smoky sip. Irish Comfort One of my favorite dishes in Vegas are the potato cakes from Rí Rá Irish Pub—they are so freaking good, and I literally order them every single time. With mashed potato, cheddar, green onion, sour cream and a balsamic glaze, these appetizers really do get you geared up for another course. The menu is packed with traditional Irish dishes like sausage rolls, bangers and mash, fish and chips, and shepherd’s pie, as well as twist on a Scotch egg made with deviled

High Standards on Display
Celebrity chef’s restaurant shines in every department Few restaurants on the Las Vegas Strip have a better location than Tom Colicchio’s Heritage Steak. Nestled in the heart of all the action at The Mirage, it’s also right next to the property’s gigantic atrium, and you’re likely to spend a few minutes just gawking at it before you even make your way into the restaurant. But you quickly realize that Colicchio’s destination is a wonderful complement to the lush foliage and water features, with its dark, burnished wood décor and warm, welcoming atmosphere. It almost feels like an extension of the atrium. As you work your way from appetizers to the main courses to dessert, you are never disappointed. Colicchio’s restaurant, like the man himself, is unforgettable. There are several musttry items on the appetizer menu, especially the

wonderfully presented charred octopus, served in a leek vinaigrette with roasted red peppers and romesco sauce. So tender and so full of flavor! If you’ve avoided octopus up to now because of its texture, this will make you a lifetime fan. You’ll see a lot dishes you recognize from other menus, but Colicchio has packed a flavorful twist into each one, from the French onion soup smothered with caramelized Gruyère to the jumbo lump crab cake served with watercress, apple and remoulade. Even the salads will make your tastebuds pop with surprise, especially the romaine Caesar with a soft-cooked farm egg and pickled white anchovy. Yum! Main courses will be familiar to any fan of a classic steakhouse, and all are worthy of consideration. You’ll be tempted (and rightly so!)
to order the 16-ounce prime rib, served with au jus and Yorkshire pudding, as it’s easily one of the best things on the entire menu, but there’s something for every palate here: Seafood lovers can enjoy sea scallops, served with roasted root vegetables and smoked bacon jus, and king salmon, accompanied by braised red cabbage and fennel. The 12-ounce Colorado lamb chops are amazing here, as are all the steak selections, from a 10-ounce American wagyu skirt steak, flavored with a Tabasco rub, to the 48-ounce Mishima ultra tomahawk, meant for multiple diners. Make sure to pair your meal with one of Colicchio’s great sides, from crispy Brussels sprouts and spicy cauliflower to creamed spinach and decadent truffle risotto. –Ken Miller The Mirage, 866.339.4566

Continuing his legacy behind the bar Cash Caterine has walked the hallowed halls of 4455 Paradise Road for more than two decades. “On July 10 of this year it’ll be 25 years that I’ve been walking on this property,” Caterine says. He started off as a barback in 1996 when the hotel was Hard Rock Hotel, and today, the property has been rebranded, redesigned and reopened as the all-new Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. “Right before the Hard Rock closed, we heard that Richard Branson was buying the hotel and I was like, ‘Hell yeah!,’” Caterine says. “Going from one iconic brand to another—I was stoked about it.” For many years, Caterine worked his bartending skills at Hard Rock, and today he continues his legacy behind Virgin’s lobby bar and lounge, The Bar at Commons Club—one of the most beautiful lobby bars in the city. “After 25 years at the same property, especially bartending during the height of Hard Rock, man, I got all kinds of stories,” he says with a
wicked little laugh. Actors, athletes, politicians, models, rock stars—Caterine has served them all. “I love interacting with people,” he says. “I tell a lot of stories. Tell the history of this place. I’m a bartender’s bartender. I can handle people, whether you’re a customer or a co-worker. I know how to deal with people. I’m good at reading people and chatting them up.” What could be better than sitting inside The Bar at Commons Club with a delicious cocktail and hearing the slew of stories that Caterine has? When he moved to Las Vegas from Tulsa, Okla., in 1995, little did he know he’d become a part of the fabric of the city. “I wear my time here as a badge of honor,” he says “I’m very proud. Just knowing what Hard Rock did for the city and being a part of that. And to continue with Virgin, I’m very thankful for that. Working here, its changed me. Its made me what I am. How could it not? Taste the new cocktails of Tao and Lavo Improving on something that is pretty near perfect has to be admired. Well, go on and admire the 20 new cocktails recently introduced at Tao at The Venetian and sister restaurant Lavo at The Palazzo. Both A-list restaurants and nightlife hot spots paired the flavors to their cuisine, pan-Asian for Tao and Italian for Lavo. Part of that experience is the popular tableside presentations. “We designed these cocktails to create an interaction between our guests and the server or bartender,” said Blair Shea, assistant director of beverage for Tao Group Hospitality Las Vegas. “Additionally, this gave us the opportunity to insert another layer in order to envelop the sense, whether it be smell via smoke, or sight via the chemical interaction between a pea flower citrus.” For example, Tao’s Smoking Dragon tableside decanter service

comes with Angel’s Envy rye whiskey, Martini & Rossi Rubino sweet vermouth, rosemary port wine reduction, Peychaud’s Bitters and a hickory smoke. For something floral and fruity, the Divinity is a refreshing blend of Grey Goose Le Citron vodka, St-Germain elderflower liqueur, cold-pressed pineapple, lemon and butterfly pea flower. “The Zen Garden cocktail also has a nuance to it that is unmistakable,” Shea said. “Sugar snap pea and melon plays extremely well off agave-forward, unaged tequila and pairs with many of our dishes at Tao.” The cocktail is finished off with cold-pressed lime and ginger beer. At Lavo, “the Fumo Grasso is my personal favorite,” said Shea. “It takes the body of the cocktail to another level through texture, just as an egg white would in a sour or flip. The flavor also plays really well off the richness of apple
butter and spices, yet is balanced via high-proof American whiskey finished in sherry wood casks.” For a tropical twist with a caffeine punch, the Valencia mixes Diplomatico Planas rum, Amaro Montenegro, apricot preserve, cold-pressed pineapple and Yellow Red Bull Tropical Edition. Two-time America’s Got Talent champion Shin Lim had built some powerful momentum in a short period of time with his show on the Las Vegas Strip when all entertainment took a long break. But the up-and-coming headliner took advantage of the downtime to dig deeper into his own creativity and find bigger, bolder ways to stun his appreciative audiences. Now that he’s the main attraction in the Theater at The Mirage, Lim is expanding his newly reopened production by adding new sleight-of-hand feats and massive illusions that haven’t been performed in that room since the days of Siegfried & Roy.
It must feel great to be able to reopen your show without so many of the restrictions other productions had to deal with. Yeah, there were so many unknowns. We were debating on opening up months ago, but we have a lot of audience participation in the show; at least my special guest Colin Cloud does—he has a lot of people come up onstage. So it was tricky to figure out how to work around that and wearing masks. Now that all those things died down, it will be a lot easier. Your show at The Mirage reopened on July 1, and the comeback was announced in late May. When did you move into serious rehearsal and setup mode? For pretty much all of the (last year) I’ve been super deep into experimenting with new concepts and new effects, doing a lot of trial and error and developing

new sleights, all for the show. But also just to have a new repertoire, because you don’t want to always do the same stuff, and I personally get bored if I keep doing the same thing. It was really good to be able to step away from the performance aspect for a while, because it’s a totally different game. Creating is fun and almost like a science project. I’ve been doing a lot of that during my downtime, and then recently it was more about gearing up for shows and putting everything together and rehearsing everything in theater, which has been redesigned. Will Colin remain a big part of the show? Yes, but the entire show has changed. The storyline is a lot more personal and a lot more abstract as well, and he plays a kind of narrator, a Morgan Freeman, if you will. We still go back and forth, but it happens in a different way now.
You are known for the meticulous planning and thoughtfulness that goes into your performance. Do you think all this time away from the stage affected that creative process? I think it changed what people enjoy and how people react to certain tricks, because once you haven’t done that for a long time, you kind of forget how people react to a magic trick. It’s so different from other art forms, still entertaining, but at the same time there’s a puzzling aspect to it, something that fools people. But it was a pretty good sabbatical for me, because it really reset everything in my brain and helped me to focus a lot more on exactly how to create something that’s really different and more personal. I think it was sort of a blessing in disguise, and now I can’t wait for people to see what I’ve created.

Is there something new in the show you’re particularly excited about? There are three or four moments that are pretty big illusions, and I’ve never done big illusions before. They are interweaved throughout the show sort of unexpectedly. Sometimes it takes a long time to set up for the big, massive illusion, so I wanted to sneak it into the middle, within the closeup tricks, so it throws people off. I’m most excited for that because I’ve never done anything like that for audiences before, and I’m very excited to see those reactions. I hope it works.

At The Mirage, you’ll find some of the biggest-name comedians in the Aces of Comedy series, which just kicked off with two Tom Segura shows. For a decade, it has hosted some of the biggest stand-up names around, like Jay Leno, Kathleen Madigan, David Spade, Ray Romano, David Tosh, Gabriel Iglesias and Tim Allen, and most of those comedians have shows scheduled for later this year. though, talk show host, author and sharp-witted comedian Chelsea Handler performs July 10, while next week Bill Maher hops onstage July 16-17. At the Plaza, comedians are frequent visitors to the showroom, and the next shows are July 23-24 from actor and comedian T.J. Miller with his observational stand-up show, T.J. Miller’s Bulbous Uncle Tour. Miller has hosted Chelsea Lately, and was the character IRok in Ready Player One. The intimate Delirious Comedy Club at Downtown Grand has hosted plenty of up-andcoming acts, everything from local acts to big names like Pauly Shore, who returns July 9-10. Also this week, host Don Barnhart is joined by
Guy Fessenden, David Ryan and Ryan Cole from July 8-11. Everybody loves Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club at MGM Grand, where the big man himself performs periodically, including this week from July 5-8 with Darryll Joyce, Mark Eddie and Steven Roberts, who also perform July 9-11. Garrett returns for two sets of dates later this month as well. Up on the second level at Tropicana Las Vegas, Laugh Factory has a great atmosphere to see a show. This iconic club, a sister club to L.A.’s revered venue, has been in Vegas for many years now, and draws plenty of big names like Jon Lovitz, who performs a special series July 13-17 and 19-21.

L.A. Comedy Club at The STRAT hosts several shows daily, including Butch Bradley & Friends, which draws in a rotating cast of comedians, and Chad Cheswick’s Comedy Magic Unhinged. You can also see Willy Barcena and touring comedians like Adam Hunter on July 5-9; there’s even a midnight show on Fridays and Saturdays for the night owls. Resident Vegas comedian Carrot Top brings his prop comedy to Luxor every night. With an inimitable combination of observational humor and show and tell, the comic ensures each night has hilarious results. And depending on what’s going on in the world, there’ll be a different set of props pulled from the many trunks lining the stage.

Bellagio exhibit stresses the importance of protecting the planet By Ken Miller

Many things have changed in the last year, politically, culturally, technologically and financially, but there is one thing that hasn’t changed: The need to take care of the planet and its resources. And it’s this aspect of our world that’s the focus of the latest display at the
Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, Eco: A Season of Earthly Awareness. Using more than 30,000 flowers and plants, the facility’s garden beds have been transformed into a rainforest, with the four sections representing earth, wind, water and fire.

“As the world transitions into a bright new beginning this summer, we want to inspire people to preserve our home,” said designer Ed Libby. “After a breathtaking journey through the rainforest filled with copious botanicals and colorful floral arrangements, visitors will be left with a newfound appreciation for our planet.” Start your journey at the West Bed (earth) and a 22-foottall statue of Gaia, the Goddess of Earth, draped in vines and

crowned with flowers. She’s framed by two waterfalls, both of which flow from a moss-covered cathedral ruin wall. Finishing this display are blue Hyacinth macaws and two large passion flower blossoms. As you turn the corner, you’ll be greeted by a 10-foot-tall scarlet ibis. Next up is the South Bed (water), featuring a large wall containing a multitude of vegetation descending from the ceiling, including vines, botanicals and floral arrangements. This all provides the backdrop for a koi pond, complete with streaming waterfalls and fountains, all overseen by two vibrantly colored tree frogs, each sitting on its own rock. As you reach the corner, you’ll see a shell, signifying that you’ve arrived at the turtle topiary, bedecked with fresh-cut flowers. As you approach the East Bed (air), you’re immediately struck by a two-story, 30-foottall treehouse that looms over arches decorated with botanicals, tree frogs and bright, exotic butterfly sculptures. There’s
also a cozy retreat nestled within this section, as well as a wooden plank walkway that connects visitors to the next part of the exhibit. Finally, the North Bed (fire) features a phoenix rising from the ashes—in this case, it’s rising above an erupting volcano. But it also houses a lush garden and a large tree—look closely and you’ll see a jaguar sitting on one of the branches. Around the tree are pitcher plants and 3D-printed lady slipper orchids laying between begonia leaves. To construct this wonder, 75 members of Bellagio’s horticulture team utilized 9,000 gallons of recirculated water and 20 repurposed trees, in addition to plans from local nurseries. MGM Resorts has committed to being a global advocate in the fight against climate change, and its conservatory team has implemented a program of water recycling, green waste procedures and repurposing plant materials. The exhibit is on display through Aug. 28.

Celebrating the headliners who helped shape Vegas entertainment There’s no real formula that determines how residencies succeed in Las Vegas. Some stars coast on name recognition, or they find themselves able to capitalize on nostalgia; some stars learn that audiences are yearning for their return to the spotlight, while others just happen to be in the right place at the right time. Yet, one thing all successful, groundbreaking residencies seem to have in common is that they’re different. And while that may sound simple, if it were, a lot more stars would be doing it.

RAT PACK Vegas Personified If one were to describe the founding fathers of Vegas entertainment, the list would likely include Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop—that’s the Rat Pack that ruled Vegas in the ’60s. All were individually successful in Vegas, and while it would be good-natured to say they all have their place in Vegas history, it’s Frank, Sammy and Dean that everybody remembers. With that said, the Rat Pack personified Vegas. They were the total embodiment of the boozy, schmoozey, smokey, classic Vegas that many long and lust for, and their performances at the Copa Room at The Sands are the stuff of legend. It’s an attitude that helped build this town, which makes their influence almost inescapable. And who would want it any other way?

BRITNEY SPEARS Fountain of Youth Some may call Britney Spears’ residency a byproduct of Celine Dion’s. Perhaps that’s true, but their impact was starkly different. While Dion paved the way for older stars, like Elton John and Rod Stewart, to reinvigorate their careers through a Vegas residency, Spears proved there was a market in Vegas for younger acts, which ultimately brought in a younger clientele. The earlier construction of The Cosmopolitan and City Center, along with a few modern casino renovations, hinted that the Strip was trying to adopt a more contemporary aesthetic. Arguably, Spears’ residency helped Vegas fully realize that venture, and it’s mostly been successful. If Spears had flopped, Backstreet Boys, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera and Lady Gaga residencies would have been, at best, unlikely.
Did you know? In 1987, Siegfried & Roy signed the biggest contract in Vegas history to perform at The Mirage: Five years, 44 weeks per year, six shows per week, $57.5 million. SIEGFRIED & ROY Tiger Kings In his book God, No!, Penn Jillette made one of the most astute assessments on the impact of Mirage headliners Siegfried & Roy: “When you take something easy and safe and make it look difficult and death-defying, you are a cheesy circus act. When you take something impossible and make it look easy, you’re an artist … What they do looks easy and simple and, well, it just happens to be close to impossible and stirs your heart to the very depths.” Siegfried & Roy elevated the typical Vegas magic show, so much so that the typical Vegas magic show became a copycat of Siegfried & Roy, replete with gaudy showmanship, tigers and dancing girls. Their run ended prematurely due to a tragic onstage accident, but no one did it better than them, and no one ever will.
DAVID COPPERFIELD Game Changer Not only is David Copperfield one of the most influential magicians in Vegas, he’s one of the most influential magicians ever. If making the Statue of Liberty disappear and levitating over the Grand Canyon are any indication, Copperfield brought large-scale, illusion-based magic into the mainstream, which clearly inspired fellow magicians like Criss Angel and David Blaine. But what makes his Vegas show so endearing is his ability to weave stories together through his magic, whether it involves a heartwarming tribute to his father, or an encounter with aliens inside the MGM Grand. And, most of all, even though he’s performed magic professionally for more than 45 years, he’s still not afraid to challenge himself or take risks, and that’s why his Vegas show never gets old.

SANTANA Art of Intimacy Santana is known for being the first true rock band to have a Vegas residency, and the group has been in Vegas for more than a decade. Since then, we’ve seen other rock acts find their place in Vegas, such as Aerosmith, Billy Idol and David Lee Roth. But more than simply ushering in a new wave of Vegas entertainment, Santana has mastered the art of intimacy. They perform in one of the smaller venues in town, House of Blues, making the band feel more up close and personal than if they were playing at, say, The Colosseum. It allows for a reciprocal relationship between artist and audience, making each individual performance unique to each audience. PENN & TELLER Truth Seekers What Penn & Teller do so well is demystify magic. Yet, somehow they still find a way to make magic mystifying. To them, magic is not an illusion, it’s a trick. They don’t want audiences to think for a moment that magic is real, because everyone knows that it’s not. Rather, they want their magic tricks to be good enough that even when audiences know they’re not real, the tricks are still interesting. That may seem subtle, but it makes a difference, because some modern magicians all too often make a mockery out of magic. make magic fun and meaningful, rather than something one has to believe in to enjoy. WAYNE NEWTON Mr. Las Vegas Everybody knows Wayne Newton is the unofficial ambassador of Las Vegas. His name is synonymous with this town. But how did he achieve such wild success? He had a few hits, a boyish smile and a distinctive high voice. Other than that, there doesn’t seem to be any concrete reasons one can pinpoint that would account for such triumph. Yet, like other successful Vegas headliners, he was a highly charismatic entertainer who displayed top-notch showmanship. At age 16, he started playing in town with his brother Jerry—six shows a day for 51 weeks. While kids his age were busy being teenagers, he cut his teeth
in showbiz at Vegas clubs, eventually learning how to masterfully work a crowd. Unlike Liberace, he was successful without gimmicks, and unlike Elvis, he was successful without colossal fame. What he achieved in this town was unprecedented, and Vegas likely won’t see anyone like him ever again. ELVIS PRESLEY The Comeback Kid By the late 1960s, The King had lost his groove. His music wasn’t selling, and he spent much of his time making unwatchable movies. At the time, it might have even been accurate to have called Elvis a joke. But, little did people know, he was on the verge of a resurgence. Elvis’ iconic ’68 comeback special on NBC reminded everyone that he was still cool. Soon after, he inked a deal with the Interna-

CARROT TOP Prop Culture Icon While many great comedians have graced the Vegas stage, such as Danny Gans, Don Rickles and Redd Foxx, Carrot Top doesn’t get enough props for being the most successful comedian in Vegas history. He’s performed his brand of prop comedy in town since the mid’90s, and he’s had a residency at Luxor since 2005. That longevity is rarely attainable for a Vegas headliner, let alone a comedian. How does he do it? He adapts. Though his schtick stays the same, the material constantly

changes. He has a few greatest hits that stay in his act, but on the whole, the material is fresh, for he’s constantly taking notes on pop culture and incorporating it into his props.

FRANK MARINO The Ultimate Diva While he wasn’t the first drag queen in Las Vegas, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say Frank Marino helped popularize the modern drag show on the Strip. As the emcee of An Evening at La Cage and, more recently, Divas Las Vegas, Marino became known for his stellar impersonation of comedian Joan Rivers. Not only did he create a fun, vibrant environment for his audiences, but so did his team of drag queens. And since the cast all played Vegas-headlining divas like Cher, Celine Dion, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears, if you couldn’t

get a ticket to one of their concerts, you could always find the next best thing at Divas. LIBERACE The Flash Liberace routinely annoyed stodgy music critics with his grandiose piano playing and showmanship. But it’s that flashy, excessive persona that made him so endearing, as well as excessively rich. Regarding the criticism, he’d often quip that he cried all the way to the bank. (By the late-’70s, he was reportedly making up to $300,000 per week at the Hilton.) His over-the-top antics, such as riding across the stage in a Rolls-Royce and wearing exotic (some may say ridiculous) costumes, essentially defined what the Vegas residency would become: an in-your-face spectacular. But, more importantly, he had an innate ability to connect with audiences, not only making them think they were seeing a show, but rather the performance of an old friend.

Did you know? Between two residencies over 16 years in Las Vegas, superstar Celine Dion performed a staggering 1,144 shows for nearly 5 million people in attendance. CELINE DION The Revitalizer Before Dion, Vegas needed some star power. Sure, Vegas had Cirque du Soleil and a few Broadway productions at the time, but people could see similar performances elsewhere. For a time, if you wanted to see Celine Dion, you could only see her in Las Vegas. Suffice it to say, her original residency, A New Day…,
was a massive success. What was supposed to be a three-year residency, turned into two successful Las Vegas residencies over 16 years, and changed the shape of Vegas entertainment to come. Best of all, the venue built for her, The Colosseum, has since become the home of other famous residencies, most notably Elton John’s Red Piano shows.
