From the Editor Looking Forward

Where did the time go? At this time last year, the staff of Las Vegas Magazine was feverishly putting out its first digital edition (because properties had only begun to reopen, and because Las Vegas Magazine can only be found in hotel rooms, we were an online presence only for the last 12 months). But here we are a year later, and Las Vegas Magazine is back in print—and back in hotel rooms! And as you read the contents of this issue, be aware that our town is still in the process of reopening— as much as you’ll be able to read about in the following pages, there’s so much more you’ll be able to experience once you actually exit your hotel room. So let’s get to it! There’s something out there for everyone this week, from the amazing vehicles for sale at the Barrett-Jackson auction at the Las Vegas Convention Center (“Block Party,” p. 30) to downtown hot spot Circa Resort & Casino (“A Legend is Born,” p. 32). We’ve also got a Q&A with Strip magician Mat Franco, who couldn’t be more excited to be back (“Return Is No Illusion,” p. 46). And this week marks the debut of a new Las Vegas Magazine series: “1, 2, 3,” in which we highlight three amazing things to do at various properties across town. Associate editor Kiko Miyasato kicks the series off with New York-New York ( p. 42). But it doesn’t stop there: managing editor

Nina King offers a healthy menu of activities for those staying at the intersection of Spring Mountain Road and the Strip in our ongoing “Day Planner” series (“Seize the Moment,” p. 48). We don’t know about you, but we’re thrilled that buffets are reopening here. After all, there are few things more synonymous with Las Vegas than the all-youcan-eat experience. Sky-High Sights The Eiffel Tower Viewing Deck is a unique and longtime favorite attraction of Las Vegas visitors, specifically because the views from the top are a must-see. Take an elevator ride up 46 stories of the half-scale replica of the landmark in France. Once at the top, take a deep breath and take it all in as you walk around the open-air viewing deck and scope out the Strip—views of the valley and mountains beyond and great sight lines of the iconic Bellagio fountains show (there are a couple tower viewers that act as binoculars). This is one vacay spot where taking pictures for social media will guarantee those likes and hearts. Close to the real Eiffel Tower’s light presentation, stop by after the sun sets and look up—every half-hour the attraction lights up with approximately 300 color-washing light fixtures and more than 800 white strobe lights. Aria restaurant specializes in Taiwanese cuisine It’s a brand recognized over the world, and Din Tai Fung, a Taiwanese dumpling and noodle house, has finally arrived in Las Vegas in a spectacular space. Finally, visitors can enjoy the brand’s steamed dumplings, noodles, wontons and so much more. You immediately feel relaxed upon entering Din Tai Fung’s interior, accented by granite floors, massive floor-to-ceiling windows, a light-accented “waterfall” and tall ceilings. Also try the DTF Old-Fashioned, which substitutes Japanese whiskey for bourbon, along with Taiwanese oolong tea syrup, orange bitters and grapefruit peel. Start your experience with the kurobota pork xiao long bao, dumplings full of pork and rich broth. Poke a small hole to get the juices flowing, then add the right amount of vinegar, soy sauce and ginger. Yum! Vegetarians can enjoy the vegetable and mushroom dumplings, filled with shiitake mushrooms, glass noodles, bok choy and dried bean curd.

If you’re in the mood for something spicy, try the shrimp and kurobota pork wontons with spicy sauce. And you won’t be able to stop eating the jidori chicken fried rice, so light and fluffy, and packed with big pieces of free-range chicken. Vegetarian fried noodles also satisfy, packed with Napa cabbage, spinach leaves and green onion-infused oil over house-made noodles. For dessert, chocolate fans will love the chocolate and mochi xiao long bao, dumplings filled with warm, chocolaty goodness. More of a bun fan? West Coast Influence It’s really not much of a contest: For people-watching and great views of the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, Giada cannot be beat. The restaurant’s perched on the second floor of The Cromwell, with floor-to-ceiling windows that open out onto a vista that includes Caesars Palace, the Fountains of Bellagio, Bally’s and more. Like Giada’s California-influenced Italian food, it’s just delightful. Whether you’re here for dinner or brunch, you’ll find plenty to keep you satisfied. We’re partial to those bacon-wrapped dates to start (especially when they mix in spicy Italian sausage and gorgonzola crema), and the arugula salad is terrific, its flavors snapping with candied lemon, crispy pancetta and Parmiagiano-Reggiano. Whether you opt for surf or turf, get ready for a treat. The branzino features creamy fennel and potato puree, braised fennel and a pomegranate glaze, while the veal chop saltimbocca is served Milanese-style. Don’t skip dessert here, especially Giada’s Favorite Cookies, which includes her lemon ricotta recipe—probably our favorite cookies on the entire Strip. The Deal of the Art

Gallery features amazing pieces—for sale Have you been wanting to head to the museum for ages now, and the online exhibits just aren’t cutting it? Well, wander through Las Vegas’ newest art museum, The Park West Gallery. This outpost of the respected New York art dealer opened this spring in The Forum Shops at Caesars, bringing a huge mix of artists and genres to the space. “Everything in Vegas has to be bigger, better, and more beautiful than anywhere on Earth,” said Park West founder and CEO Albert Scaglione in a press release. “Our collection at the Park West Museum & Gallery Las Vegas will be second to none, with everything from emerging artists

to one-of-a-kind paintings by Renoir, Chagall, Picasso, and more. We can’t wait for tourists and locals alike to experience these fantastic works of art in person.” There really is something for everyone in the 7,000-square-foot space, including a curated rotating exhibit. The current one, From Renoir to Kostabi, looks at different types of mediums and artists from several centuries, such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Marcel Mouly and Mark Kostabi. On display are works from all those artists, plus 15th-century illuminated manuscripts. And that curated exhibit is only a small part of

the sheer amount of art you’ll find in this gallery; about 1,000 pieces are on display. Best of all? All that other art is for sale, with prices ranging from the hundreds of thousands of dollars to the millions. Park West actually owns the largest collection of Pablo Picasso ceramic pieces in the world. Perennial Vegas fave Michael Godard’s irreverent pieces depicting inebriated olives, frogs and other characters with all sorts of backgrounds are also available. The Revolution Will Be Fun It’s inarguable that Las Vegas has the most unique skyline in America. Where else can you find a pyramid, next to a medieval castle, near a Manhattan skyline, near an Eiffel Tower replica, near a space needle? Yeah, nowhere. And smack dab in the middle of this skyline is the High Roller, a bright, beautiful observation wheel that stands 550 feet. For scale, that’s 100 feet taller than the London Eye. And while it’s mesmerizing from the outside, the view is even better from the inside. With its great height and floor-to-ceiling glass cabins, the attraction offers incredible 360-degree views of Sin City. Daytime viewings reveal stunning mountainous scenery, and late afternoon rides offer a chance to watch a gorgeous sunset. But nighttime views are ideal, for they capture the dazzling big-city lights. Celebrity Latin chef Lorena Garcia, one of the few women who have their own restaurant on the Las Vegas Strip, brings the spices and specialties of her native Venezuela to the plate at her restaurant Chica. Flavors are also drawn from Peru, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina and the results are too many good recipes to choose from. Caesars Palace restaurant is one of the Strip’s most successful If you are a fan of Gordon Ramsay’s hit television show Hell’s Kitchen, you’ll know that the two rival chef factions work really hard to take each other down. But when they work together, the Caesar salad is perfectly dressed, the lobster risotto creamy, the scallops well-seared, the beef Wellington super tender and the sticky toffee pudding decadent. At Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen in Caesars Palace, you’ll be happy to know those crews have gotten over their enmity and the kitchen staff is united in sending you out a delicious meal. The décor here evokes the show, with red on one

side and blue on the other side of the exhibition kitchen at the front of the main dining room. The rest of the space is gorgeous, with a bar on one wall and large windows overlooking the Strip. When you sit down for lunch or dinner, a drink is perfect to start. A personal favorite is Notes From Gordon, a Plymouth gin-based cocktail that features peach, lemongrass and lemon, plus a small note that contains one of the pithy comments that the chef is known for. Smoke on the Blvd features Woodford Rye, Aperol, sweet vermouth and Averna amaro, smoked in a little glass enclosure that makes for a striking drink.

All those signature dishes from the show are available, either a la carte or in a prix fixe menu, plus many other options, like the heirloom burrata salad, spring onion soup with truffle potato hash, braised short rib with creamy polenta, filet mignon and chicken scallopini. And if the speculoos cookie ice cream that comes with the sticky toffee pudding isn’t enough sweetness, how about an espresso martini? Canal Cuddling When The Venetian was built, its planners knew right away one element they could not do without: A replica of the Grand Canal in Venice. After all, without it, how would they replicate the gondola ride? It’s arguably the most iconic, romantic experience one can enjoy as part of a trip to Italy. So it would have been sacrilege to not replicate it in Las Vegas. And very romantic it is! It’s still one of the most popular attractions in Las Vegas after more than 20 years. But it’s not just couples—entire families can also be seen enjoying a song (or two) from their gondolier as their boat floats down the man-made waterways, snapping photos aplenty. And this is one attraction you’ll want to experience more than once— there are both indoor and outdoor options available. Here’s a “secret” tip: There’s a Gondolier March twice a day, at 9:50 a.m. and 4:20 p.m. Check out a team of gondoliers serenading the crowd along the indoor canal near the gondola turnaround. Helping to create ‘wow!’ moments It’s safe to say that Las Vegas is an amazing city; and Jason Stephens, director of beverage for MGM Grand, would have to agree. “Vegas had always intrigued me,” says the Tennessee native who was raised in Louisiana. “I had come out here several times on vacation and stayed at different properties. It was always so ‘wow!’ is the best way to put it. Seeing the massive resorts—I knew it was something that I wanted to be a part of.” So he made the move in 2011, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and experience— more than a dozen years’ worth—in the food and beverage industry, from bartending to management. He landed a job at MGM Grand as a bar porter manager and worked his way up the ladder into positions like assistant beverage director, director of food and beverage operations, director of restaurants, spending a few years at sister property New York-New York and, most recently, moving back to MGM Grand.

During Stephens’ tenure with the company he was a part of the team that helped launch T-Mobile Arena and The Park. “I was never a hockey fan—until I went to a Knights game!” he said. Stephens also helped launch Whiskey Down at MGM Grand in 2014. It’s his job to oversee all the beverage programs for the property, including casino bars, lounges, showrooms, pools, sportsbook and the nearby Mansion. “The beverage industry—there’s always something new, it’s always changing,” he says. “I find it very interesting, the new trends. I wouldn’t call it research because it’s something that I enjoy doing. It’s taking what’s new and innovative around the country and world and then taking what we do here and finding new and innovative ways to present it.” In other words, Stephens has now become a part of that continuing Vegas legacy—creating new and memorable “wow!” moments for guests. –Kiko Miyasato

aficionados will be seriously geeking out at this year’s Barrett-Jackson auction at the Las Vegas Convention Center from June 17-19. The standard-bearer in collector car and automotive lifestyle events, Barrett-Jackson has long held many surprises for its fans. (Few will forget the emotional 2018 auction, highlighted by re-creations of vehicles driven in the iconic movies of Burt Reynolds, who passed away just before the auction.) This year is no different, with everything from fa-

mous DJs and iconic movies to former wrestling superstars. Fans of Deadmau5 (who’s fresh off a very successful stint in Las Vegas, packing in a huge crowd at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center) will no doubt want to see—and possibly bid on—a 2015 McLaren P1, formerly owned by the superstar DJ/ producer. It’s a very popular vehicle with hypercar enthusiasts; it can reach 120 mph in 6.8 seconds, a result of a purpose-built, flat-plane V8 engine that develops 727 peak horsepower,

in addition to a single electric motor capable of producing an additional 176 horsepower. All told, the car produces 903 horsepower, and it’s one of only 375 produced. Based on a one-piece, carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, the car has only 180 miles on it. Also on the block this year is the original “10-second car,” a 1994 Toyota Supra driven by Paul Walker in 2001’s The Fast and the Furious and 2003’s 2 Fast 2 Furious. Glitter Gulch is what Vegas Vickie was attached to for 30 years. When we bought it, Vegas Vickie came with the deal. When we demolished the Glitter Gulch, we made sure we took Vegas Vickie down safely and intact. We always thought that Ve-

gas Vickie was so iconic to Las Vegas. We felt that we wanted to take the sign down and evaluate the integrity of the sign and if it was in decent-enough shape—and it was. Now we get to have a little fun by saying, ‘We took Vegas Vickie down, shipped her off to rehab, got her all ready to go and while she was out we got her a knee replacement so her knee actually kicks every now and then.’ We got her all squared up for the next 30 years.”

There’s always a reason to return to Vegas So you are here in Las Vegas and you think you’ve seen everything this city has to offer. Well, you may have been very, very busy and finally checked everything off your bucket list that you possibly could, but baby, you haven’t seen it all yet. You may just need to schedule a return trip. There’s a lot to look forward to in the coming weeks and months in Vegas, including the reopening of two of the Strip’s most iconic shows, Cirque du Soleil’s Mystère at Treasure Island on June 28 and “O” at Bellagio on July 1. Mystère is the longest-running Cirque show in the city, and really captures the Cirque mystique. “O,” with its water-themed environs, excites a sense of awe and wonder. Both feature an incredible array of acrobats, all of whom are raring to perform again for live audiences—for you. And America’s Got Talent winner Shin Lim is also reopening his magic show at The Mirage on July 1.

Live music has become a huge part of Las Vegas in recent years, giving visitors the opportunity to see not only legends onstage, but also some of the hottest new things around. If seeing a legend was on that bucket list of yours, come back for the re-emergence of Carlos Santana at Mandalay Bay’s House of Blues on Aug. 29 and from Sept. 1-4. Mat Franco used the pandemic as opportunity to expand By Brock Radke

When Mat Franco: Magic Reinvented Nightly reopened on the Las Vegas Strip in the spring, it wasn’t just back to business as usual. The affable illusionist and his crew made some significant changes to the show and renovations to the Mat Franco Theater, expanding the stage and modernizing the space with new lights, projections on the walls and other enhancements. There’s plenty of fresh material in the show as well, and all the extra effort is in the name of welcoming visitors back to Las Vegas and creating a live entertainment experience that’s more vibrant and memorable than ever before. We spoke with Franco about the creative approach to his momentous comeback.

You returned to the stage at The Linq in late April. What was that like? The first night back was surreal. I know I had to hold back tears before entering the stage (area) and some of our crew members did as well. The audience, I think, was very appreciative to be seeing a show again, and for many of them it was their first time back. Surreal is probably the best word I can use to describe it after 411 days of not doing what I probably need to be doing. You made several significant changes and upgrades to the show, some of which didn’t have anything to do with restrictions that were in place when it reopened. How did you go about making those changes and decisions? It was a moving goalpost throughout the pandemic to see what we were going to be able to do, so I really tried to focus on the things I could control. I had a lot of new material I was working on and I was anxious to get that into the show, and I don’t know if it was an accident or if it was in the back of my mind and happening intentionally, but I was working on material that was a little more hands-off and socially distant. Some of that has certainly found its way into the show. But (the process) was

really about using any constraints as a creative challenge. We’ve enjoyed five amazing years at the Linq and having signed on for five more, it seemed like the perfect time to refresh things. Since Las Vegas is the destination for magic, it feels significant and important to have your show back and other magic-based shows operating on the Strip again. Have you felt that kind of feedback so far from the audience? One of my goals in the revamp of the show is to bring more color and positivity than what was already there. Everybody is talking about light at the end of the tunnel and I think we’re seeing that now and I want to be a part of that. I’m hoping it’s not just in the magic but that the overall energy, vibe and positivity will bleed through in how the show looks and feels. Is there a particular new segment that you’re really happy about right now? Absolutely. There’s a few new segments in the show but the one I might have had the least faith in is the one audiences have been responding to the most. It’s required the least amount of refinement so far and has been the most fun to

perform. It involves balloons and a really quirky, subtle idea involving helium in a balloon and blowing up another balloon manually. Since the summertime, I’ve worked on several different methods to get this to happen and it finally clicked right before the opening. It’s just really enjoyable to do. Your performance is really centered in making a strong connection with the audience, and that’s the one thing that felt so impossible over the last year. Did all that time away from the stage change the way you think about connecting with the audience? It did, and more specifically for me, it became clear to me now that I’m servicing the audience, providing something for them. I don’t want the show to be about me. I want the show to be about them. I want to give them a piece of me, but I want the show to really be for them. When I sit in a theater, I enjoy performances that are not so much ego-driven but really driven toward that connection, and I try to live up to that every night.

Head downstairs and grab a brew for you and your significant other at the hotel coffee shop or kiosk. If you are staying at The Palazzo, for instance, Illy Cafe is on the way to Restaurant Row, and the killer Go Greek yogurt place (opens at 9 a.m.) is right behind the escalators to The Grand Canal Shoppes in the same general area if you need a little morning pick-me-up. 9:45 a.m.: Head to your 10 a.m. brunch at Chica in The Venetian. The daily brunch features a menu that was revamped last summer, and plenty of faves, like the cachapa pancakes, got a redo. The marble potatoes are stewed with chiles and onions, which rock. Noon-2 p.m.: We know, two hours is not enough time to do all the shopping you want, but it can get you started. Once you finish up brunch, sashay across the convenient pedestrian walkways past the Wynn’s gorgeous roses to Fashion Show Las Vegas, where you’ll mosey through shops like the new Honey Birdette, swimwear shop Everything But Water and Coach, plus bigger stores like Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstom and Saks Fifth Avenue. If you love those stogies, Davidoff of Geneva is right in the plaza, and putting a few in your pocket for later isn’t a bad idea. 2-3 p.m. Stash those shopping finds and put your feet up for half an hour,

then head to Treasure Island to take the edge off your appetite. 3-6 p.m.: The Golden Circle Sportsbook at Treasure Island is an excellent hybrid between a sports bar and book, with restaurant-style seating and something like 60 TVs. There’s plenty of space for social distancing, and even comfy VIP areas. While you’re checking out WNBA team the Las Vegas Aces (times vary from 11 a.m. -5 p.m. throughout the weekend), check out the massive nachos—they are seriously delish (cheese on every chip!) and way bigger than your head. 6-8 p.m.: Toddle on down to Rhumbar at The Mirage for an hour on the patio drinking—yep—rum-laden cocktails and indulging your passion for cigars. On your way out, you’ll let your eyes be dazzled by the glory of the free volcano eruption (8 p.m.). 8-10 p.m.: Dinner, anyone? So many options, but for this trip, head back to The Palazzo, where Mott 32 gives you upscale Chinese cuisine. You might want to dress up here, as it is seriously cool, with a custom interior by lauded designer Joyce Wang. 10 p.m.-late, late, late: It’s your holiday, so late-night gaming is a good thing. Head back to your hotel— tables and gaming devices are wide open, and your cocktail servers will bring you a beverage. Remember to throw her or him a few bucks. 8 a.m.: Whattt? Is it the next day already? Durn.
