From the Editor A New Era
This is a landmark week, both for Las Vegas and for Las Vegas Magazine. Our city reopened 100% on June 1, and the issue you are holding in your hands is our first print issue since the 2020 pandemic shutdown. For the last year, Las Vegas Magazine published digitally, emphasizing its online presence during a time when our town was gradually reopening and tourists slowly began to come back. We never missed a week, constantly updating you on the latest offerings (and how they could be enjoyed, given pandemic restrictions). We will continue to publish our digital edition, but now you can also look forward to our publication waiting for you when you check into your hotel. It feels as good to have you visiting Las Vegas as it does to be able to provide you with the city’s ultimate entertainment resource guide. Now let’s all have some serious fun! This issue’s centerpiece is a reprint of a feature many of you may have missed: The Las Vegas Magazine Hall of Fame class for 2021 ( p. 28). It’s the HOF’s second year, and this year’s class is distinct in that every honoree was chosen by the 2020 inaugural class. We’re sure you’ll all agree this year’s class is well deserving, and you’re sure to get some great ideas as to where to spend your time and money after perusing these pages.

Go Green It’s a given that Vegas homeowners need to be water smart, and one logical solution is to opt for artificial grass. She notes the type of custom homes people are seeing now has undergone a major transformation. “There are more and more modern-looking homes being built, but not the older ‘desert modern.’ It’s more contemporary, like things you would see in L.A. and Southern California. The exteriors, especially, look a lot different. It’s not so much of the cookie-cutter look where everything looked the same. We’re moving away from that now to a more custom contemporary look. Kitschy Fun Tiki your party (yup, I punned it!) to the next level with a new secret pop-up bar located on the second floor of The Front Yard at Ellis Island Casino, Hotel & Brewery. Through July 3, the bar escape, called The Island at Ellis, surrounds guests with all things tiki fun. Chow down on specialty menu items like a teriyaki chicken burger, tiki quesadilla and coconut shrimp. In addition, guests can order from The Front Yard’s popular brunch and dinner menus. You can’t have a tiki bar without some themed cocktails, and there are 10 new recipes to choose from, all inspired by the islands, including tiki classics and beer cocktails. No Bad Choices Chef Marc Vetri’s restaurant at Palms, Vetri Cucina, was a casualty of the pandemic (as Palms remains closed indefinitely). But in July, Vetri and his team set up shop at Terra Rossa at Red Rock Resort for a quick culinary takeover with Osteria Fiorella, a pop-up restaurant based on Fiorella, Vetri’s popular pasta joint in Philly. Then, by August, Osteria Fiorella went from pop-up to permanent, replacing Terra Rossa. With classic and unpretentious Italian favorites, along with fresh pastas, breads, wood-fired pizzas, meats and more, there’s no doubting why the restaurant continues to impress diners. A few favorites include Sal’s meatballs served with whipped ricotta and a slice of focaccia; rigatoni topped with sausage ragu and Parmigiano-Reggiano; classic Margherita pizza; and a veal Parm with buffalo mozzarella and San Marzano tomato sauce. Other worthy bites include the prosciutto with red wine poached pears, the endive Caesar salad and the fried Brussels sprouts with maple glaze. Feeling Lucky
Get into party mode at celebrated watering hole The name, brand and venue that is O’Sheas has been an iconic destination on the Las Vegas Strip for more than three decades. It was a somber day when the original O’Sheas casino closed in 2012, even if it was to make way for The Linq Promenade’s retail/dining project. The casino where Rusty Griswold won a car in Vegas Vacation would be no more. Farewell to beer pong, farewell to cheap and abundant drinks and, saddest of all, farewell to Mr. Lucky, Brian Thomas’ beloved green-clad leprechaun and the casino’s mascot. After 23 years on the Strip, it seemed that the luck had run out for O’Sheas. Or had it? A new O’Sheas reopened at The Linq

Promenade at the end of 2013, bringing the spirit of the original back with beer pong tables, blackjack, roulette, live music, three bars—and, of course, Mr. Lucky. The 5,000-square-foot space is still a mix of an old-timey Irish pub and raucous Vegas casino that pays homage to its roots. The original marquee was refurbished and placed right outside the casino’s Promenade entrance and next to the outdoor Blarney Bar, which serves as the perfect people-watching spot. Back inside, the Dublin Bar seats a nice amount of people and offers bar-top gaming; the Lucky Bar is a petite bar that features a mural of the original O’Sheas. Order a
specialty cocktail like the frozen Irish margarita, or the popular frozen Bailey’s cocktail—it’s like an adult milkshake. Or try one of 50 beers on tap, including Dos Equis, Blue Moon, Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy, Ballast Point Sculpin and, of course, Guinness. There are also weekly drink specials (make sure to check with the bartender) and some pretty tasty specialty shots. Glory Days Have you missed the rodeo in Vegas? You are not alone. This weekend, get that fix as the Professional Bull Riders association puts fans back in front of the action in Vegas. On June 11-12, the PBR: Unleash the Beast Las Vegas Invitational comes to the MGM Grand Garden Arena for two days of bull riders doing their best to stay on the rolling back of a massive bull, at least for the requisite eight seconds. Fans will find not only general tickets, but close-up tickets and a variety of add-ons experiences that include Q&As, merchandise and concession vouchers. But that’s not all! The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo: Showdown in Vegas Challenge of Champions occurs June 13 in conjunction with PBR, letting fans catch bareback riding, bull dogging, barrel racing and more classic events. The first thing you’ll probably notice about John van der Put is his costume—I mean, how could you possibly miss it? Bedecked head to toe in green and wearing a knowing smirk, he looks like a disgruntled member of the Muppets. Of course, once you actually hear Piff the Magic Dragon speak, it becomes a whole different story. You’re not listening to a guy in a strange suit; you’re enjoying a magician who makes nonstop jokes about how much he loves gold and fair maidens, all with the most deadpan lilt. Within a few seconds, you are under his spell. Whether it’s magic, comedy or a combination of both, you’re more than happy to spend an hour with this medieval, mercurial madman. He’s back performing with Mr. Piffles, his tiny dog that’s ever-present in everything Piff does onstage, whether it’s interacting with the audience or performing an illusion. Assistant hotel manager leads by example For Las Vegas-born Edgar Palma, what was supposed to just be a job as a front desk agent to earn some extra money while going to college for computer technology and programming turned into a successful 15-year career at Treasure Island. As assistant hotel manager, Palma is still a very well-known face at the front desk. You’ll often find him there greeting new and returning visitors and spreading his positive attitude. “It’s the people that I fell in love with,” he says. “Getting to know our visitors that come from different places in life, different cultures, countries. I’ve always loved that.” Now that Palma has been helping to lead the team at TI for more than a decade, he understands the importance that his position carries. “You need to first and foremost have leadership,” he says. “I’m a firm believer that
there’s a difference between leadership and management. The manager is exactly what the title says—you ‘manage’ to get through the day. A leader, being in leadership, you put your name on that day.” Palma’s positive outlook and work ethic comes from his parents and his TI mentors, but it also comes from his rigorous exercise routine. Not only does he mountain and road bike, but “I go to bed at five at night, so I can get up at one in the morning so I can go have my run,” he says. “There’s no one in the world outside. It’s just you and your thoughts. It’s amazing. You will learn so much about yourself. “Look, anything in life can be solved. Even this past year—man, it was tough, but you had to see it through. One of the most recent returning shows on the Las Vegas Strip is also one of its longest running productions. Purple Reign: The Prince Tribute Show, voted All-Time Best Tribute Show by the readers of Las Vegas Weekly (a sister publication of Las Vegas Magazine) last year, made its triumphant return to the Legends in Concert Theater at the Tropicana over Memorial Day Weekend, another solid signal that live entertainment is back in Las Vegas. It’s been a regular stop for Prince fans for more than two decades, and the show’s creator, star and co-producer Jason Tenner is beyond excited to get back to the business of rock and roll. Purple Reign has reached Vegas institution status. By my count you’re about 25 years into this, right? I started out in 1997, so yeah, about a quarter century. I’ve got a couple gray hairs popping in here and there. But I feel lucky. I feel blessed. I’ve worked hard, I don’t cancel shows, I show up every day and give it everything and all the guys I’ve got with me feel the same way. We all want to be as badass as we can be. It is a long time, and so many different eras. We started out at this college club across from UNLV called Tom & Jerry’s, with dollar beer pitcher night, so you can imagine how that went. Those were pretty wild times.

You moved the show from Westgate to Tropicana in 2017. How did it change and evolve at its new home? Being back on the Strip was a very cool thing. We also took on (producing) partners in Red Mercury at that time, and that’s been a really good relationship. We already had the bigger stage set and all the props, so we took all that with us, and before the pandemic started we had added a second cast. So there was another guy doing Prince a couple nights a week, and we would tour the show as well. What’s it like sharing that great, classic theater with another phenomenal tribute show, Legends in Concert? I think it’s a great pairing and sometimes people come to see both shows. That’s just a really great show and they’ve been around even longer than I have.

What kind of changes have you made to Purple Reign for its comeback? There are so many great Prince songs and I always like to put some of the b-sides in, and the band knows all the major b-sides and of course all the hits. And there’s some new Prince music coming out, so that’s something we’ll add and learn if those new songs catch on. But I like to do “She’s Always In My Hair,” “Erotic City,” “If I Was Your Girlfriend” and (deep cuts) like those, so it’s not just all “1999” and “Little
Red Corvette.” We’re adding new clothes and costumes, too, and I’ll probably change my wig style up a bit. Did all the downtime from the pandemic change your perspective on Prince’s music or allow you to dig into that material in a different way? Actually, I didn’t listen to Prince or play Prince. I wrote a couple of new songs and released one in October and one in March, and I have my warehouse studio, so I’ve been making music and music videos and just working on projects. I stayed far away from the Prince universe and it was kind of a relief not to think about it, and now going back, there’s a renewed energy and everyone is so totally hyped to do it again. Stepping away from it cleared my mind. You played some shows in California and Florida. How did it feel to be back onstage after such a long time away? It felt a little foreign, to be honest. I got winded and I never used to get winded before. It was strange but still super fun. It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do, to sing and dance and do something with music, and my band is all players. Everyone is so excited. When you’re an artist or a performer, it becomes part of your identity and I’m sure there are a lot of vocations where that’s the case, but it’s so strong for entertainers.

David Copperfield brings past to present in a dramatic, powerful way It seems hard to imagine, but David Copperfield is entering his fifth decade of amazing audiences with his larger-than-life illusions. And he’s entering his third decade as one of the Las Vegas Strip’s most iconic entertainers. When the staff of Las Vegas Magazine met to launch its own Hall of Fame in 2020, the choices for the inaugural class were much-debated … except for one name. When it comes to magic, Copperfield has redefined what’s possible—and what’s seemingly impossible! A huge part of what makes an act successful in Las Vegas is its ties to the past. The memories we grow up with strongly determine what sells tickets today. It’s the reason heavy metal acts and hair bands from the 1980s are selling out

arenas, and it’s also the reason Donny & Marie and Wayne Newton packed theaters during their Las Vegas runs. And no matter your opinions of magic (it appears to divide most groups straight down the middle), odds are you have fond memories of at least one of Copperfield’s television specials or feats through the years—walking through the Great Wall of China in 1986, escaping from Alcatraz prison in 1987, and surviving a fall over Niagara Falls in 1990, just for starters. You’ll have a pretty good idea of the amazing experience you’re in for as you line up for David Copperfield’s show. Outside the theater there are plenty of attention-grabbing visuals: A large engraved plaque from the Society of American Magicians dubbing Copperfield the Magician of the Century, as well as a secondary title: “Forever to be known as the King of Magic”; a statue of “Blu Alien,” one of the characters you’ll see later in the show; and a bust of Copperfield, below which swirl an assortment of images, including the Statue of Liberty, a nod to his famous 1983 illusion in which he made the New York City landmark disappear before millions of fascinated viewers. If you haven’t yet been to a Copperfield show, know this: The illusions are grand.
They’re not just immensely visual, with lots of lights and dramatic music, they’re often downright emotionally powerful. As much commitment as Copperfield has to his craft, he’s got just as much passion about his past. In bringing his childhood to life, Copperfield enlists the aid of several “assistants,” including the alien mentioned previously and a dinosaur named “Frank.” We know, we know … it sounds corny, right? But don’t be the least bit surprised when you find a lump in the back of your throat as the illusion unfolds. There are moments during a Copperfield show when you stop thinking about how he does any of the amazing things he does and just ... accept them. Call it believing, call it what you will—it all feels tangibly real. But mixed in with all this is a genuine sense of fun. Copperfield is very aware of his legend looming large, and takes plenty of potshots at it, keeping the audience laughing and relaxed. As great as your memories of Copperfield have been over the years, get ready for a whole new set after seeing this show.
