From the Editor Music to Our Ears
When the COVID pandemic led to the shutdown of Las Vegas, there was plenty we immediately missed: restaurants, shows, bars, clubs and attractions, for starters. But as time went by and some of those began to reopen, what we really started to miss was live music. In addition to our amazing residencies across the Strip, Las Vegas also hosted countless great bands for one-off shows at venues like House of Blues at Mandalay Bay, T-Mobile Arena, Michelob Ultra Arena at Mandalay Bay and many more. And just like that— they were all silenced simultaneously. The silence was both deafening and depressing. That’s all going to change considerably in the coming weeks and months. As the city plans to reopen everything on June 1, as of press time, many live acts have taken notice and announced dates for 2021. That includes both our residencies and one-off shows. And we couldn’t be more excited. This week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine devotes plenty of space to some of the live shows we’re most looking forward to seeing (“Live Music is Back!” p. 20). In addition to live music, many long-shuttered production shows are planning to come back this year. Cirque du Soleil announced it will reopen both Mystère at Treasure Island and “O” at Bellagio this summer, a huge boost for the
city’s entertainment scene. But if you’re visiting this week, there’s still plenty of quality entertainment. This issue profiles smash production Jabbawockeez: Timeless at MGM Grand (“Dance Party,” p. 26), Piff the Magic Dragon at Flamingo (“Slaying Audiences,” p. 7) and David Copperfield at MGM Grand (“You’ll Really Believe,” p. 15). There’s also an insightful interview with Jonathan Goodwin, a daredevil who dazzled audiences on America’s Got Talent and who now performs in hit Strip production Fantasy at Luxor (“Escape Route,” p. 24). And don’t forget about our city’s amazing restaurant scene, particularly its steakhouses. We’ve featured three of the city’s top options in this issue: Andiamo Steakhouse at The D (“Step Back in Time,” p. 15); Jean Georges Steakhouse at Aria (“Next-Level Dining,” p. 12); and Phil’s Steakhouse at Treasure Island (“Classic Cuts,” p. 8). from thin air, but when Piff does it, you’re almost waiting more for his one-liner than the feat itself. Therein lies the secret to Piff’s success. He completely sells his character—a guy dressed as a dragon (not a very convincing costume,
by the way) who believes he is a dragon, replete with said dragon’s fantasies about princesses and gold. Add in a devil-may-care attitude and a cute sidekick named Mr. Piffles, and you’ve got comedy gold—the dragon kind. –Ken Miller

Classic Cuts Fans of Phil’s Steakhouse can rejoice, as the restaurant just recently opened after being closed for some time. The restaurant resembles an old school steakhouse, with plush seating and wood-accented everything—just super comfy. The Treasure Island stalwart serves up dishes like a huge 24-ounce bone-in ribeye chop, chicken marsala with mushroom sauce and thyme, and pan-fried branzino with caviar rice. But those aren’t the only standouts on the menu. It features so many classic steakhouse dishes, such as crab cake with an Old Bay aioli, oysters Rockefeller, jumbo shrimp cocktail, French onion soup with Gruyére cheese and Caesar salad with herb croutons. Entrées include filet mignon, strip steak and shrimp scampi—all your favorites. Steaks come with steamed asparagus and whipped or baked potato, and can be converted into surf and turf by adding crab legs, shrimp scampi, a 6-ounce lobster tail or a crabmeat béarnaise crust. If you feel like there’s room for a little bit of dessert, indulge in the warm skillet chocolate chip cookie, served with rich vanilla bean ice cream. –Nina King

Belt It Out
Get Around to It If you want the views, all the views, take a short trip on the High Roller observation wheel in The Linq Promenade. This gigantic attraction is like an enormous Ferris wheel, but with cars that can handle a large group—so there will be no chickening out with a “no room for me” attitude. The wheel fully rotates once every half hour, and hits 550 feet at its maximum height, but the trip around is really smooth,

you may barely even realize that you’re moving. There are a number of different packages available, including a “Happy Half Hour,” where you can drink as you take a spin, with up to 10 guest allowed on the wheel. We’re partial to the lychee raspberry bellini, so crisp and delicious with prosecco, lychee and raspberry, or the JG Vesper, a vodka-forward delight with gin, aperitif and lemon. Starters run the gamut from surf (char-grilled octopus or bacon-wrapped shrimp) to turf (Japanese wagyu carpaccio with black truffle fritters). There’s also a terrific crispy sushi sampler, accompanied by chipotle mayonnaise. One thing they all have in common: The presentation is dazzling. You’ll always have your camera at the ready. And the same goes for the main courses. Obviously, steaks are king here, from filet mignons to bone-in ribeyes (all USDA Prime from Colo-
rado) and Japanese and American wagyu (pair them with either the saltwater prawns or roasted bone marrow to really put things over the top). But if your tastes run more to fowl, don’t sleep on the crunchy organic chicken, another great presentation served with spinach and hot sauce. Of course, sometimes you just want a nice burger. Nothing wrong with that. And there’s definitely nothing wrong with the JG Cheeseburger, topped with truffle mayonnaise, brie and a yuzu pickle. End this unforgettable night with dessert. Sexy Fun Your mental image of “adults-only topless show” might not exactly jive with the experience you’ll have at Fantasy, one the longest-running and successful shows currently on the Las Vegas Strip. Obviously, you’re expecting something sensual and erotic, and Fantasy is definitely that, but you might not expect it to be so … funny. It starts with host/singer Lorena Peril, who specializes in helping to break down the inhibitions of audience members. She’s so full of energy you can’t help but pay attention, and soon enough she’s zeroing in on specific people, asking some, er, intimate questions. But it’s all in the spirit of good fun, and you’ll be laughing along every step of the way—in between the ridiculously energetic dance numbers by some of the most beautiful, in-shape women you’re ever likely to see. Humor also comes courtesy of “half-time” act talented magician Murray Sawchuck. Depending on the day of the performance, you may see Jonathan Goodwin, a death-defying daredevil who captivated audiences on America’s Got Talent recently. –Ken Miller

Odds are many of you have checked out Circa Resort & Casino by now, Derek Stevens’ latest project in Las Vegas. If you have, you know that he’s all about the complete experience, including great food. And it all started with Andiamo Steakhouse, Stevens’ worldclass restaurant at his first property in Sin City, The D. You really feel like you’ve stepped back in time once you walk through Andiamo’s doors. This is a classic steakhouse in every sense, from the servers who prepare Caesar salads tableside (a highlight we really recommend) to the classic cocktails on the menu. There’s so much to enjoy here, especially for steak fans. Couples will want to consider the 32-ounce tomahawk, a ribeye that will turn every head in the place. Whatever you decide on, you get your choice of Bearnaise sauce or the restaurant’s signature “Zip” sauce. We recommend the latter, as there’s simply nothing else like it in town. There’s also lamb chops, veal osso buco and a Berkshire pork chop for meat lovers, as well as a vast pasta menu. Shrimp scampi here is a can’t-miss option. –Ken Miller
You’ll Really Believe He’s arguably the most famous magician in the world—he was awarded a Hall of Fame honor in Las Vegas Magazine’s inaugural class in 2020—and he’s back on the Las Vegas Strip to astound, entertain, and connect with audiences from across the globe. David Copperfield is truly one of a kind. If you’ve never seen Copperfield at work, very little can prepare you for the emotions you’re about to experience. Leslie Baeckeroot
Manager continues to grow her passion “My love of flowers actually started from my grandmother,” Leslie Baeckeroot says. “She was a floral designer and she taught me everything. From a very young age, I picked it up. She also had a love for gardening; she could pretty much make anything grow or regrow.” Today, Baeckeroot says she’s working her dream job and has turned a hobby turned passion into a budding career, as she’s the conservatory manager for Bellagio’s beautiful Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. Before Baeckeroot put down roots in Las Vegas, she was born and raised in Detroit, Mich. It’s in this city that she began her professional career starting out in small floral shops, eventually joining big-box retailer Michaels as its head floral designer. Around the mid-’90s, she moved to Tucson, Ariz.—“I just fell in love with the West and the mountains”—and continued her career working at top hotels in their floral department. It was during this time that she made
a visit to Las Vegas and first set her sights on Bellagio’s conservatory. “And I remember thinking ‘Wow, this place is amazing!’” she says. In 2001, she made the move to Vegas. She first worked for a high-end, private floral design firm—clients included Celine Dion—and kept an eye out for a job at Bellagio. She joined MGM Resorts International about a year after she moved here, working her way up the ladder, working in the in-house floral departments across many of the company’s properties on the Strip. In 2003, a job finally opened at Bellagio and she was hired as a floral designer. She’s been blooming ever since—getting her current title in 2019. “I work within the conservatory and all that goes into it,” she says. “Top to bottom, left to right, there are so many working parts behind the scenes, but this is where I am meant to be. This is the highest affinity that I aspire to be. I love coming to work every day.” –Kiko Miyasato

Cosmopolitan restaurant offers stellar craft beer menu Holsteins debuted at The Cosmopolitan when the resort opened in December 2010, at a time when sizeable craft beer selections on the Vegas Strip were highly unusual. While they’re still not common, this casual gourmet burger restaurant has established itself as the beer place in The Cosmo, and ranks as a craft beer haven that rivals any in the Vegas tourist corridor and beyond. Situated on the second level, the room exudes a warm, inviting atmosphere with wood floors, tables and walls; hanging Edison lights; earth tones of rust, browns and tan; a life-sized pink and white Holstein cow; and numerous whimsical cartoon images of bovines and burger characters throughout the space. The food menu features several signature burgers like the Rising

Sun with dry-aged sirloin, cheddar and caramelized onions, appetizers such as fries topped with pork belly and togarashi, salads and outlandish milkshakes. The majority of the beverage offerings are devoted to the 24 beer taps and dozens more in bottles and cans, along with a somewhat secret Reserve Beer List with an additional 112 choices. All major beer styles are included, with renowned options such as Founders All Day IPA, Firestone Walker barrel-aged Stickee Monkee Quad and a lineup of Fifty-Fifty Eclipse imperial stouts. Local brews are not left out, with Able Baker Atomic Duck IPA, Big Dog’s Las Vegas Craft lager, CraftHaus Evocation saison and Tenaya Creek Hop Ride IPA rounding out the selection.

And as long as you’re ordering dessert, go ahead and give in to the suggested wine pairings, such as a Donnafugata Ben Rye passito di Pantelleria for the pie, or the Vidal Inniskillin ice wine from Canada with the Bread & Butter bread pudding, served with bourbon crème anglaise. Here are just a few of the acts we’re looking forward to in 2021 This year just keeps getting better and better. Las Vegas is hosting larger crowds every week, and come June 1 the city is expected to reopen 100%. That means all the venues, restaurants and experiences you’ve come to know and love as part of the Vegas experience are likely to return as well, and that includes live music, one of the last holdouts of the pandemic shutdown. We don’t know about any of you, but live music is one of the things we miss the most—there’s just no substitute for being in a huge gathering and enjoying one of your favorite musical artists play your favorite songs. Here’s a list of the artists and events we’re most looking forward to again.

Life is Beautiful (Downtown Las Vegas) This festival had to take a break last year, but it’s returning this year stronger than ever—in fact, this may be the festival’s strongest lineup yet. In addition to of-the-moment-hot acts like Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion and Tame Impala, this year’s downtown festival from Sept. 17-19 includes audience favorites like Modest Mouse, Haim, ASAP Rocky and Ludacris—and that’s just scraping the surface. It might be hard to snag a ticket for this one, but oh boy, will it be worth it. Barry Manilow (Westgate Las Vegas) His residency was one of the funnest
tickets in town, and will likely remain so when he resumes performing on Sept. 16. It’s not just his ridiculous number of unforgettable, singable hits like “Mandy” and “Can’t Smile Without You.” It’s the energy, charm and good humor he brings to every performance. Donny Osmond (Harrah’s) Osmond, who performed here for years with his sister in a hit residency at Flamingo, had planned on beginning his own residency here in 2020. Best laid plans … But he’ll be back as of Aug. 31, and odds are his fans are already buying their tickets as we speak. He really is the ultimate Vegas act—he sings, he dances, and he appeals

Colosseum starting on Aug. 28, and we plan on being front and center when he croons “Every Day is Like Sunday.” Michael Bublé (T-Mobile Arena) If you’ve not yet seen a live show at the magnificent T-Mobile Arena, you are really missing out. It allows for some spectacular experiences, not to mention some of the best acoustics to be found on the Las Vegas Strip. And if there’s ever a performer who suited Vegas better, it’s crooner Bublé, who is sure to pack the house on Sept. 24. ZZ Top (The Venetian) As you’d expect from their legendary videos, ZZ Top delivers a perfectly calibrated show. There are few acts that get audiences in a better party mood than the band that created “Legs,” “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Tush.” Their Las Vegas runs were extremely successful, and they’ll continue that streak when they return to the Venetian Theatre on Oct. 8. Enrique Iglesias (MGM Grand) There are no-brainer Las Vegas acts and then there’s Enrique Iglesias. He’s traditionally

to all age groups. Oh, and he’s really, REALLY funny! Chicago (The Venetian) For years, this legendary ensemble made sure to include Vegas on its nationwide schedule, and Chicago returns to the Venetian Theatre on Sept. 15. Some music truly never ages, and we can’t wait to hear “Saturday in the Park” and “25 or 6 to 4” once again. Usher (Caesars Palace) One thing you can count on when live entertainment fully returns: There will always be a high-powered act performing at the Colosseum. It’s been home to residencies by Celine Dion, Elton John, Mariah Carey and more, and come July 16, the A-list continues with arrival of Usher’s residency. From his hit albums to his dancing skills to his judging stints on The

Voice, Usher is the complete package, and we have little doubt he’ll pack the House That Celine Built.

Billy Idol (The Cosmopolitan) Sometimes it’s as much about the attitude as it is about the music itself. Idol has endeared himself to Vegas audiences over the years with successful mini-residencies at the House of Blues, and he’ll begin a new Vegas chapter on Oct. 16 when he begins a series of dates at The Chelsea. We can’t wait to chant “More, more, more!” Morrissey (Caesars Palace) Like most of you, we’re huge fans of both The Smiths and frontman Morrissey’s solo career—his legendary catalog can be heard practically everywhere these days, from commercials to movie soundtracks. He’s planning on multiple dates at The

It’s not hard to wonder why—he’s one of the most successful acts in Latin pop in history. When he returns Sept. 25 to the MGM Garden Arena, expect the usual fireworks—and maybe a few additional ones, since he’s been away so long. Bruno Mars (Park MGM) For those who doubt he’s the hottest act at the moment, consider this: When Mars announced he would be performing six dates in Las Vegas at the Park Theater starting July 3, his shows sold out in minutes. For those of you who didn’t snag tickets, here’s hoping that Mars adds more dates when he’s able. And we’ve still got our fingers crossed for a residency …

Jonathan Goodwin brings talents to Fantasy

BRITISH-BORN DAREDEVIL Jonathan Goodwin has been hung from a helicopter, buried alive, burned at the stake, covered in bees and performed all sorts of other stunts and escapes on America’s Got Talent, Britain’s Got Talent and other web and TV specials. Now he’s bringing his unique set of skills to the Las Vegas Strip for the first time, joining the sultry cast of two-decades-strong burlesque institution Fantasy at Luxor. While the show continues performances in its temporary home in the Luxor Theater, Goodwin’s contributions (which you can see for yourself Monday through Wednesday) bring some epic danger to the bigger venue.

In some cases, the theater or showroom space plays a major role in the overall entertainment experience, and in others the room is more of a blank canvas for the performers to use as they wish. But whether you’re seated among a few hundred showgoers in an intimate environment enjoying an upclose-and-personal presentation or sharing a massive communal event in an arena-sized venue, place is important and thought-out. The foundational hip-hop music that inspired b-boy culture and the roots of break-dancing that brought Jabbawockeez together is thoroughly explored, and the crew pays homage to the genre’s regional styles, legendary artists and trendy moves that came along with them. But that’s just the beginning. Generations of American pop, soul and R&B are well-represented with a tip of the hat to the Jackson 5, James Brown, Frank Sinatra and other icons, and the Jabbas even dip into punk rock, grunge and personal favorites from movie soundtracks. Above all else, the temporary setup at the Grand Garden Arena allows Jabbawockeez to show its full capabilities and why its show is so different from anything else you can
experience in Las Vegas. State-of-the-art video screens, lasers and special effects add exciting layers to the crew’s uncanny ability to create boldly cinematic visuals through ultra-precise choreography. Sitting in the bleacher seats at the arena gives you a full perspective on this production that you might not get in their smaller theater, and the athleticism of the performance and striking snapshot images during Timeless tells the story of how big the Jabbawockeez show has been all along.
It’s no wonder MGM Resorts recently signed the crew to a four-year extension that will keep the show onstage at MGM Grand through 2025. Jabbawockeez has showcased singular creativity for more than a decade headlining on the Strip, and the group’s resilience and dedication over the past year is another accomplishment to add to the collection. It will be great to see the Jabbas back on their home stage soon, but it’s also amazing to see them perform right now at the Grand Garden Arena.

At MGM Resorts International properties, check in on your phone when you get close to the resort, and you’ll be able to pay and get a digital key. You can also check in with a contactless option on a kiosk and a more traditional front-desk option. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas and lines to accommodate social distancing, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.
Hand sanitizer, everywhere! Every hotel is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer new handwashing stations. You’ll notice that employees are masked and, if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, loading docks and other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.
Pools are open again, but operations are significantly different from before. For example, at Wet Republic at MGM Grand and Liquid at Aria, reservations will be required for all hotel and nonhotel guests, and VIP sections will be separated to allow for social distancing. In addition, rigorous cleaning protocols will be implemented.
What a difference a year makes! In 2020, there was little, if any, attendance allowed at sporting events across the country (and none whatsoever in Las Vegas sports venues once the shutdown of the Strip was announced). Now, not only are your favorite teams back, you can buy tickets! And popcorn! And beer!
Experiences will vary depending on venue, but every effort is made to make the experience as safe as possible. For example, at Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort, you can now access a digital store directory on your phone. There’s also a digital coupon book with nearly 50 offers, which you can access by going to miraclemileshopslv.com. Another digital assist is available from Jules, the retail center’s chatbot, and she can be reached via text message, Facebook Messenger or the retail center’s website. And finally, QR codes make dining easy, as you can see the entire menu on your phone.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as slot machines not being available right next to each other, or plexiglass partitions being used, congregating behind each other not allowed, and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. Restrictions were set to ease May 1.
The show experience will differ widely, depending on the venue. For example, Absinthe at Caesars Palace, which is performed in a tent, is currently not in the round. Rather, the audience faces one side of the theater, with the action taking place across from them. It has a 660-seat capacity, but as of press time, all parties were spaced at least 3 feet apart. And, of course, everyone is required to wear a mask, audience members and performers included. Temperature checks are still mandatory before entering, and the venue is sanitized before and after every performance. You can learn more about every show by calling the box office.
Most restaurants require reservations, but not all. Many will text or call when your table is ready. You’re required to wear your face mask until you reach your table. It may feel much more intimate, as tables have space between them. At some restaurants, permanent menus are sanitized between each use. Condiments won’t simply be stored on the table, and are sanitized between customers.

Although attractions in Vegas have really rebounded, sanitation is high. Social distancing is still evident, with seemingly omnipresent markers. Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens has a one-way flow. On New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with the same party.
Nightclubs have returned, but the usual operations have significantly changed. For example, at Omnia at Caesars Palace and Hakkasan at MGM Grand, touchless menus are now the norm via scannable QR codes, and the venues are operated as lounges, with social distancing and mask-wearing enforced.
Las Vegas is getting closer and closer to full operation, but your safety is still the top priority. Here are few more things you should know about efforts to make you as safe as possible. Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down, and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find little
bottles of amenities, but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and guest services may not be entering your room unless requested. You must still wear your mask in public areas, including the casino. While the vaccine rollout has been successful
so far, precautions must still be taken. It’s also considerate of fellow guests and resort workers. When you ride elevators and escalators, there may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups and try to ride
with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars. When in lines, practice social distancing. Stay several feet away from people other than your
travel companions whenever possible. Be patient—even though you are in line, you’ll still be moving. When you depart, one of the best ways is to check-out on the TV in your room. Some hotels have check-out kiosks that are sanitized often.
