From the Editor Get Outside!

Most of you probably equate Las Vegas to extreme heat. Which is probably why most of you are extremely confused right now. After all, this is probably the most beautiful time of year in Southern Nevada, weather-wise. And while we completely get that most of you are planning multiple indoor activities while you’re here, you really should think about taking advantage of this amazing weather and experience some outdoor activity. (My Editor’s Note photo was taken during a helicopter excursion into the Grand Canyon. It remains one of my happiest memories as a Las Vegas resident.) This week’s issue has plenty of venues that are designed to be enjoyed during this optimum weather: Topgolf Las Vegas, which just added a slew of great new games in addition to its already outstanding lineup (“Shut Up and Drive,” p. 14); SkyJump at The STRAT, perhaps the most harrowing, adrenaline-inducing experience on the Las Vegas Strip (“Take the Plunge,” p. 12); and Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips at the bustling Linq Promenade, where you can enjoy a British classic while engaging in plenty of people-watching (“From See to Sea,” p. 12). You may have so much fun staying outside that you may never think of Las Vegas the same way again. Not that there isn’t plenty to be enjoyed indoors! Let’s start with the great entertainment options available, including illusionist Jen Kramer, who returns to Westgate Las Vegas (“Close-up and Personal,” p. 7); comedian Carrot Top, who continues his successful run at Luxor (“Props to Him,” p. 12); and comedian John Caparulo, who sat down for an interview with editor at large Brock Radke to talk about his return to performing at The Space (“Time to Laugh Again,” p. 26). And let’s not forget about Las Vegas’ amazing restaurant scene. Italian restaurant celebrates chef’s traditions Viewers of TLC’s Cake Boss know plenty about Buddy Valastro. For instance, they know he’s got a huge family; they know his family loves to eat; and they know Buddy love feeding his family. For the Valastro family, any occasion involving food is a special one, and whatever special occasion you might be celebrating during your visit, make sure to make Buddy V’s Ristorante a part of it. Trust us, it will make a memorable day that much more so. Whether you’re in the dining room or on the indoor patio, you’ll feel special here; the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and your servers are so friendly you’ll want to adopt them.

There’s an enormous wine selection to go along with the substantial dishes, but we recommend one of Buddy’s specialty cocktails, particularly The Cake Boss, as essential a Buddy V creation as you can get here, with Pinnacle Cake vodka, Chocolat Royal liqueur and Baileys Irish Cream. We don’t often recommend a specific salad at most restaurants, but we make a huge exception for the Toscano, maybe our favorite on the entire Strip. It’s just perfect, with prosciutto, roasted tomatoes and artichokes on a bed of baby arugula, drizzled with lemon vinaigrette and pecorino Romano. If you want to start with something a bit more substantial, you’ll want to order Grand-

ma’s Meatballs, made with beef, veal and pork and smothered with marinara and Parmesan. As you’d expect from an Italian restaurant, your choices here include pizzas, salumi and cheese boards, pasta and seafood. In every category, yes, you made the right choice, from the Mediterranean sea bass and chicken Parm to the Boss XL veal Parm chop. But if you want the true Buddy V experience for dinner, you’ll want to order the Valastro Sunday Gravy (their term for “sauce”). It’s a monster of a bowl, piling meatballs, sausage, lamb and pork on a delicious mound of rigatoni. This is what Valastro family gatherings are all about! –Ken Miller

Props to Him Scott Thompson, aka Carrot Top, excels in turning ordinary household items into props that set the whole world laughing. Need a few examples? Glad you asked: A slipper with a bumper on the end for those prone to stubbing their toes; a large piece of cardboard with two holes cut out in the middle—the application for a job at Hooters; an envelope shaped like a middle finger, and you send it to the IRS when filing your taxes. Yep, as you can see, there’s no end to Carrot Top’s creativity, or the laughs you’ll experience at one of his shows. “From birth to mirth, I love seeing the process, to make it and see it work is like your baby,” Carrot Top explained to Las Vegas Magazine. “I never cared about being labeled a prop comic as long as ‘comic’ is in there. … But years ago I was in a junkyard and I saw a little mini-toilet. What’s funny about a mini-toilet? So I took it and figured I’d come up with something.” That gag? Maybe one of his most famous: a plate for bulimics so they can eat and throw up. From See to Sea How many times have you watched an episode of Hell’s Kitchen and heard Gordon Ramsay scream at the Red or Blue team: “This fish is (expletive) still swimming!” What always ends up happening is that the chef then returns with a perfectly cooked piece of fish, and all you can think is, “Man, I really want some fish right now!” Lucky for you, Ramsay offers that perfectly cooked cod—and plenty more—at Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips.

Entertainment venue expands offerings for summer There are few venues in the Las Vegas Valley that offer the sheer variety and entertainment value of Topgolf Las Vegas. This multistory, multifaceted recreational facility features more than 100 climate-controlled hitting bays across four levels, from which players hit microchipped balls. There are a wide variety of games available, and Topgolf has added a few more fun ones to usher in summer. The newest game is called “Closest to the Hole,” and that pretty much sums it up—whomever gets the ball as close to the center target as possible wins. Can you hit the lowest score? There’s also a similar game called “9-Shot

Be Comforted Who doesn’t need some comfort food once in a while? Sometimes it’s a needed respite from all the craziness around you, especially right now. And sure, we’re big proponents of eating healthy, but even we need a greasy cheeseburger now and then. And for some of the best comfort food on the Strip, it’s hard to beat Searsucker. Emidio Pepe Pecorino Iliev chose this white wine not only because of its rich flavor with slight floral notes, but because of the family behind the label. The vineyard is located in Italy, and Emidio Pepe, at more than 80 years old, along with his family, makes organic, natural wines with no pesticides used. “The family is an exciting one, and their love for wine and the process of making wine is exciting,” Iliev says. “To me it’s one of the most exciting pairings with our signature spicy rigatoni.” –KM

Hristian Iliev

A passion for music spreads to passion for wine You’d never know it by looking at Hristian Iliev now, but when he was a teenager, he had a mohawk and played guitar for a hard-core punk band in his home country of Bulgaria. Iliev says he had a passion for music and the scene, and now he’s found that same passion in a career that’s nearly two decades long. Iliev is the lead sommelier for Carbone at Aria. “One of the most exuberant, exciting feelings you can have is playing punk music onstage for people,” he says. “And for me if you find a wine that can give you that same experience, and I have, I’ve had those same experiences with wine that I used to feel onstage.” Iliev first moved to Las Vegas in the late’90s, and his first job working at a Caesars Palace restaurant helped spark his interest in becoming a sommelier. By 2004, he helped open Mix at Mandalay Bay, where he worked for eight years and ran a wine program that featured 2,500 labels. In 2012, Iliev joined Aria,

working as a sommelier at restaurants like Bar Masa and Sage, and in 2015, he helped open and build the wine program for Carbone. Today, Iliev is an advanced sommelier, but wine was in his life long before being certified. “I’ve been around grapes and vines since I was young,” he says, explaining that he grew up working in his family’s vineyards. “I love to show the world where the wine comes from, who makes it,” he says. “It’s almost like the wine takes them to the place it comes from.” And that’s what Iliev is doing at Carbone, with the Italian restaurant’s more than 700 labels of Italian, French and American wines. “I’ve grown to really love Italian wines, he says. “What I really love about Carbone is it really is like a homemade meal executed at its best. It’s that simple. You leave the restaurant, and you’ll remember what you had.” And something tells us you’ll remember Iliev, too … even without the mohawk. –Kiko Miyasato

Meet Up at Sunset

New pop-up lounge is a nice break from the Las Vegas Strip It’s a beautiful escape. Outdoors. Decorated with garden decor. A canopy of bistro lights strung up everywhere. Views of the Mediterranean-inspired, poolside landscape. Comfy, cozy nooks and lounge areas with sofas and tables. It’s all at locals favorite Green Valley Ranch on the patio of its “backyard” space—The Backyard at Sundown is a new pop-up lounge perfect for the evening’s warming weather. The nice respite from the bustle of the Strip transports guests to a European-style vacation spot. Guests are encouraged to take a stroll through the expanse of the backyard, complete with vineyards and a re-created beach. The Backyard at Sundown also has some of the yummiest specialty cocktails, gorgeously

dressed up for plenty of picture taking. One of the tastiest, with a slight sweetness and with delicious SipSmith gin, is the English Garden (pictured), mixed with lemon, lavender, strawberries, thyme and Red Bull blueberry. A fun, cutesy-garnished cocktail is the Weekend in Coronado, mixed with Avión Silver tequila, grapefruit, guava, lime and soda. Another impressive-looking cocktail is The Hunny Bear, made with Jack Daniels Tennessee honey whiskey, Jack Daniels Tennessee straight rye whiskey, lemon and peach. A nice selection of red and white wines and prosecco are also available in flights, with 3-ounce pours starting at just $15. The lounge also supplies some sweet and salty snacks for a little nosh. include shareable plates like a tray of a trio of nuts, including spicy almonds, honey-roasted cashews and wasabi nuts. A charcuterie dome comes with chorizo, capocollo, smoked Gouda and quince paste, or opt for a plate of fresh, seasonal fruit like watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe and gooseberries. Chef Akira Back’s legendary fusion of his native Korean influences with traditional Japanese flavors remains one of Bellagio’s boldest strokes, evident in offerings like salmon tiradito, crispy rock shrimp with chili aioli, tuna tataki and miso-glazed broiled black cod. At The Cosmopolitan, the modern restaurant brand Zuma (877.893.2001) is inspired by the traditional izakaya, a tavern-style establishment where it’s best to experience a multitude of dishes. Sea bass sashimi and fatty toro tuna with garlic chips and Fresno peppers bring new twists to familiar bites, and roasted lobster with shiso-ponzu butter or smoky scallop skewers cooked on a robata grill are ideal for sharing. Fresh flavors also await at Mizumi at Wynn (702.770.3320), where chef Min Kim arrived last year as part of a restaurant refresh. Don’t miss wild snapper tempura, wagyu beef fried rice and an extensive robatayaki menu with beef, chicken, lamb, seafood and vegetable options. Las Vegas locals have a multitude of more casual Japanese restaurants to enjoy on a regular basis, depending on what we’re in the mood for. The Red Rock Resort’s Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill (702.797.7444) is a happy hour/post-work favorite for oxtail fried rice, creative sushi rolls and the legendary Blue Ribbon fried chicken served with wasabi honey. For a comforting bowl of ramen, try Jinya Ramen Bar (702.868.8877), which has two locations in the southwest quadrant of the valley and is dishing up some of the most richly flavored and imaginative noodle soups around. For a truly one-of-a-kind sushi experience, seek out the serene and hidden Yui Edomae Sushi (702.202.2408), where acclaimed chef Gen Mizoguchi prepares a brilliant omakase meal piece by piece right in front of your eyes with product flown in regularly from small fisheries in Japan. Even the fanciest Strip restaurants cannot duplicate the singular sensation that is Yui. Locals also love chef John Chien Lee’s pristine sushi and sashimi at Soho Japanese Restaurant (702.776.7778), but those seafood delights are only the beginning. Try kumamoto oysters layered with ikura and uni, cured Atlantic salmon with a poached quail egg and salmon roe, or the decadent combination of bluefin tuna and foie gras. Did you ever have a dream that you swore was like reality? Now, how about experiencing reality that you could swear was like a dream? That’s Omega Mart. Omega Mart is the creation of the popular Santa Fe, N.M., artist collective known as Meow Wolf. Fans of its first big art experience, House of the Eternal Return, will delight in the new, second permanent installation that recently opened inside Area15, Las Vegas’ immersive entertainment complex. This is Meow Wolf’s largest undertaking to date and is Area15’s largest tenant, spreading across 52,000 square feet of space. More than 325 artists—graphic artists, painters, architects, playwrights, actors, audio engineers, musicians, sculptors, software developers, lighting designers, technicians, visual artists and more, some local to Vegas, and some from around the world—created hundreds of unique projects that help make up the sprawling Omega Mart. So just what is this immersive experience that allows and even encourages visitors to touch and explore everything—heck, even climb, crawl and slide—throughout the space? Omega Mart is America’s Most Exceptional Grocery Store, as Meow Wolf has coined it, and that’s exactly what visitors are first hit with—an actual replica of a grocery store, with products that can be purchased. Yes, there’s a deli, freezers, vegetable and fruit section, and aisles of canned goods, boxed products and cleaning supplies. Yet, something seems a little ... off. Something weird is going on. The products and goods seem otherworldly on closer inspection.

And herein lies the beginning of what will pique the interest and curiosity of visitors, because behind the grocery store façade, one will find portals into other dimensions. There really is no one way to experience Omega Mart. Guests can simply enjoy the sensory overload of art installations and interactive exhibits and appreciate the creativity. And those that want to delve into the story behind this extraordinary supermarket will find a core narrative— that there’s a nefarious company called Dramcorp that makes all the products using a mythical ingredient called “the source.” Using portals located throughout the store, you can explore Dramcorp’s factory and corporate offices to dive deeper into the conspiracy. Using an RFID card, given to each guest upon entering, you can actually unlock computers and files and try to uncover the mystery. Through the exploration of corporate-type environments, guests will also

stumble upon other more mystical worlds like the Projected Desert, one of the most immersive and transcendental artistic spaces, made up of 20-minute looping videos with original music projected onto a re-created mountainous terrain. Stumbling upon portals into other dimensions is par for the course at Omega Mart. All throughout the space, one room can lead into another world; trippy experiences saturate this immersive exhibit and guests are encouraged to dive deeper and deeper, physically and mentally. has been bringing the laughs at Harrah’s Las Vegas with his Mad Cap Comedy residency since 2018 and while he waits for the show to return to action—likely to happen this summer—he’s kept busy with a creative animated side project for the web and as many liveand-in-person gigs as he can find. Fortunately, he’s found another local spot just off the Strip and fashioned a hybrid live-and-livestream show, Uncapped Comedy, that relies on interactivity with the audience. Cap talked to us about his series of shows at the Space, his Cartoon Comic videos and much more this week. Uncapped Comedy May 11 at 7:30 p.m., $49 in person, $9 livestream. How did you come up with this concept? Once I knew I wasn’t going to be able to go and do a new hour of stand-up every month, I went to this thing I’ve wanted to try for a long time. So we’re passing the hat around to the live audience and they write down some suggestions for topics, and we try to keep it to five words or less, then I go onstage and just wing it. It’s really fun because it’s interactive, the audience feels invested in it and it’s fun for me because I get to see where it goes. And if the show sucks, it’s their fault! Did you do any shows with only virtual audiences last year? I had been working on an animated project for the last six or seven years, but I can’t draw, which is why it took so long. But I’ve been wanting to turn myself and my stand-up comedy into a cartoon for a while, so when live audiences were essentially illegal, this was adaptable to the situation. I contacted a really great animator, Xeth Feinberg, and recorded some stand-up in my bathroom with a bunch of soundproofing pads up, and we called them Cartoon Comic and put ’em on YouTube, Facebook and my website. It’s a unique approach because the thing about doing shows on Zoom is, it just seemed like the type of thing I would feel bad about taking people’s money for. It’s just not the right setting for me. I think other guys can score with it but for me, I need some sort of energy, and the animation gives you something more to watch. You moved to Las Vegas recently. How long have you been playing Vegas? I’ve been coming for years. Back in the early and mid 2000s, I used to do the Riviera at least once a year, then I went to South Point for a while, and that was where I recorded my last hour-long special. And then in late 2017, I got a call from Harrah’s and I started doing the residency show there in May 2018. Harrah’s has been able to bring back several shows already, and it sounds like the resort is getting ready to do more with live entertainment again. My poster is still up outside so I guess they haven’t totally given up on that idea. But yeah, I think they still have the intent of bringing the show back when they can bring all the others back, and I would love to get back to it. The first couple of weeks (during the shutdown) was kind of nice, but it started to feel pretty weird after a while. You just don’t feel like yourself. It seems like there’s been a bit of a comedy boom in Vegas in recent years with new clubs opening up. From the comedian’s perspective, does it feel like this is an even more desirable destination? Absolutely. When you have multiple venues that, as a comic, if you’re not under contract, you can make your way around to, it creates a really cool vibe and energy. It attracts more developing comics, too. Before the last few years, I don’t think someone could take Vegas as a place to get started. When you have a lot of places and comics, it creates an artistic colony vibe, and that’s really essential to developing comedy at all stages of the game.

At MGM Resorts International properties, check in on your phone when you get close to the resort, and you’ll be able to pay and get a digital key. You can also check in with a contactless option on a kiosk and a more traditional front-desk option. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas and lines to accommodate social distancing, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.

Hand sanitizer, everywhere! Every hotel is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer new handwashing stations. You’ll notice that employees are masked and, if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, loading docks and other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.

Pools are open again, but operations are significantly different from before. For example, at Wet Republic at MGM Grand and Liquid at Aria, reservations will be required for all hotel and nonhotel guests, and VIP sections will be separated to allow for social distancing. In addition, rigorous cleaning protocols will be implemented.

What a difference a year makes! In 2020, there was little, if any, attendance allowed at sporting events across the country (and none whatsoever in Las Vegas sports venues once the shutdown of the Strip was announced). Now, not only are your favorite teams back, you can buy tickets! And popcorn! And beer!

Experiences will vary depending on venue, but every effort is made to make the experience as safe as possible. For example, at Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort, you can now access a digital store directory on your phone. There’s also a digital coupon book with nearly 50 offers, which you can access by going to miraclemileshopslv.com. Another digital assist is available from Jules, the retail center’s chatbot, and she can be reached via text message, Facebook Messenger or the retail center’s website. And finally, QR codes make dining easy, as you can see the entire menu on your phone.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as slot machines not being available right next to each other, or plexiglass partitions being used, congregating behind each other not allowed, and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. Restrictions were set to ease May 1.

The show experience will differ widely, depending on the venue. For example, Absinthe at Caesars Palace, which is performed in a tent, is currently not in the round. Rather, the audience faces one side of the theater, with the action taking place across from them. It has a 660-seat capacity, but as of press time offers 180 seats per show. And, of course, everyone is required to wear a mask, audience members and performers included. Temperature checks are still mandatory before entering, and the venue is sanitized before and after every performance. You can learn more about every show by calling the box office.

Most restaurants require reservations, but not all. Many will text or call when your table is ready. You’re required to wear your face mask until you reach your table. It may feel much more intimate, as tables have space between them. At some restaurants, permanent menus are sanitized between each use. Condiments won’t simply be stored on the table, and are sanitized between customers.

Although attractions in Vegas have really rebounded, sanitation is high. Social distancing is still evident, with seemingly omnipresent markers. Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens has a one-way flow. On New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with the same party.

Nightclubs have returned, but the usual operations have significantly changed. For example, at Omnia at Caesars Palace and Hakkasan at MGM Grand, touchless menus are now the norm via scannable QR codes, and the venues are operated as lounges, with social distancing and mask-wearing enforced.

Las Vegas is getting closer and closer to full operation, but your safety is still the top priority. Here are few more things you should know about efforts to make you as safe as possible. Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down, and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find

little bottles of amenities, but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and other guest services may not be entering your room unless requested. You must still wear your mask in public areas, including the casino. While the vaccine rollout has

been successful so far, precautions must still be taken. It’s also considerate of fellow guests and resort workers. When you ride elevators and escalators, there may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups

and try to ride with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars. When in lines, practice social distancing. Stay 6 feet from people other than your

travel companions whenever possible. Be patient— even though you are, you’ll still be moving. When you depart, one of the best ways is to check-out on the TV in your room. Some hotels have check-out kiosks that are sanitized often.
