From the Editor A Most Important Day
Mother’s Day is just around the corner, so of course you have something special planned for the Most Important Woman in the World. What?!? You don’t? What in the world is wrong with you? Just to be clear at this point in the Editor’s Note, that’s me talking to myself in the bathroom mirror this morning. Yes, when it comes to planning for days such as this, I am the absolute worst—one time (true story!) I took my mother out for lunch without a reservation. Quick tip for the rest of you: Don’t ever do that! To make sure you don’t make the mistakes I’ve made, this week’s edition of Las Vegas Magazine includes several great ideas for Mother’s Day: a virtual chocolate tasting package from Ethel M Chocolate Factory (“Oh, Momma!” p. 15); a fun day of relaxation at The Spa at The Linq (“Get Mom Pampered,” p. 8); and a collection of some of the best brunches in all of Las Vegas (“Three Cheers for Mom! p. 24). There’s no better way to earn brownie points with Mom than what’s inside this issue. Is Mom a big fan of Las Vegas shows? She’s in luck! Las Vegas has reopened its entertainment empire in a big way, and we’ve rounded up some of the best shows in this issue: Penn & Teller at Rio (“It Takes Two,” p. 7); “X” Country at Harrah’s (“A Sexy Hoedown,” p. 15); and Absinthe
at Caesars Palace, easily one of the most popular shows in the Strip’s history (“That Syncing Feeling,” p. 20). In addition, we’ve got a Q&A with longtime Strip performer Christopher Kenney, who for years appeared as master of ceremonies Edie in Cirque du Soleil’s sexy production Zumanity at New York-New York. That show is closed, and Kenney is currently performing in another show farther down the block: Faaabulous! The Show at Notoriety Live. He took some time out to talk to editor at large Brock Radke about staying busy amid a pandemic (“Just 4 Kicks,” p. 26). If you haven’t been to Area15 yet, please take some time to rectify that situation. It’s an incredible mixture of the weird and the wonderful, and its newest addition, Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience, is a truly unique attraction that is perfect for date night (“A New Perspective,” p. 10). It Takes Two The Las Vegas Strip is anticipated to reopen 100% on June 1, and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate than with the return of two of the most iconic magicians in the city’s history: Penn & Teller, recipients of a Las Vegas Magazine Hall of Fame honor this year and the longest-running illusionists on

the Strip (this year marks 20 years since their show at the Rio began). What makes Penn & Teller truly fascinating is how ubiquitous the act has been over the decades; some fans discovered them on the Showtime series Bullsh*t; some discovered them on the CW’s Penn & Teller:
Fool Us; some discovered them when they were regulars on late-night talk shows in the ’80s and ’90s; others discovered them here. But regardless of how you discovered them, there’s very little we need to tell you. They’re entertaining, revealing, insightful and quintessentially Las Vegas. –Ken Miller

Eat It All If you get hungry, but want to experience more than a burger to fill you up, then the Wicked Spoon buffet has you covered. Although most buffets have closed in Vegas, Wicked Spoon reopened in March for breakfast and brunch from Thursday to Sunday. Even before the restrictions of the past year, the buffet stood out. Gourmet dishes are still individually plated in small potions, although they are now given to you by a server. You might find

A New Perspective
Virtual museum excites awe and emotion If there ever were a definition of artistic genius, it’s certainly that of Vincent Van Gogh, the Dutch painter who produced some of the most revered canvases in history. Those pieces provide the framework for Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience, one of the most unique art exhibits out there, and one of the most popular at the moment. After exhibitions in several cities across the world, Las Vegas’ Van Gogh exhibit opened inside Area15 just a few weeks ago, providing a 360-degree, digital “virtual museum” in which to experience the works of the artist. It’s been suggested that it’s one of the best activities for

a date, and we’d have to agree with that, as it marries classical music with the beauty of Van Gogh’s creations like Starry Night, possibly his most famous. Different paintings are paired with different musical selections, which provide a means to change the mood of each presentation. And each period excites emotion, which is why we recommend it for date night! When you first enter the large, rectangular room, you’ll notice a series of archways on each wall and no real structure. Choose any spot at all—the views are all excellent. If you are with your sweetie on that date night, go ahead and hold hands, order a beverage, and wait. You’ll be
transported through 300 of the artist’s works, woven together by the music and quotes from the artist’s letters to his brothers. It’s not completely stars, fields and sunflowers, though. The display moves through Van Gogh’s life, folding in the tragedy of Van Gogh’s last years, and the pain he went through. His mental illness is addressed and his residence in an insane asylum. Sweet Serenity I’ve said it many times to people who have visited me in Las Vegas, “If you’re on the Strip and you’re a sweets lover, you’ll find nirvana at Hershey’s Chocolate World at New York-New York.” The two-story destination has all the Hershey’s candy products on the market, huge sections of different varieties of Reese’s, Jolly Ranchers, Hershey’s Kisses, the list goes on and on. Fans of Iron Chef no doubt know how big a deal Masaharu Morimoto is. His restaurant empire spans the globe, and his influence on the culinary world is vast. A meal at any of his restaurants promises a combination of Japanese and Western ingredients to create something truly unique. You can experience this at his eponymous restaurant in Las Vegas. From appetizers like tuna pizza (with anchovy aioli, olives and jalapeño) to toro tartare (sour cream balanced against wasabi), you can feel East and West influences, and that extends to pan-fried pork gyoza, combining Napa cabbage and sake ginger sauce. Entrées range from braised black cod with a ginger-soy reduction to Angry Chicken served with roasted peppers. The steak selection includes Japanese wagyu, both A-5 and F-1. The Horse Soldier Old-Fashioned is mixed with Horse Soldier bourbon, house-made syrup consisting of sugar, cinnamon sticks, peeled orange rinds, cherry juice and water, and aromatic bitters. David Chiti
Lounging around Caesars Palace All the fun experiences you’re having at the lounges at Caesars Palace is thanks in part to David Chiti, general manager of lounges for the property. He oversees the ordering of spirits, scheduling of the staffs, the creation of the cocktail programs, nurturing the vibe of each space and making sure each spots’ guests are accommodated. “That’s my favorite part of the job, meeting my guests and seeing my returning guests,” says the Canadian native. “I enjoy talking to people; you meet people from all over the world. That’s the best part of being in this industry.” The food and beverage industry is one Chiti has been a part of for more than two decades in Las Vegas. He’s been behind the bar at big nightclubs, he’s spent 11 years as a certified sommelier at one of the Strip’s top French restaurants, and in 2018, he joined Caesars Palace, where he helped manage Montecristo Cigar Bar. Recently, Chiti was promoted to his
new title, and he’s added Vista Cocktail Lounge (where we met with Chiti for this story), Vanderpump Cocktail Garden, Alto Bar and Stadium Bar, a new upscale sports lounge set to open this spring. When Chiti is off the clock, he loves spending time with his wife and three boys. He actually met his wife while they were both bartending at a nightclub on the Strip; they will celebrate their 17th wedding anniversary next month. He loves movie nights at home and cooking, a passion for him—he makes a mean chicken schnitzel, and is a master of the barbecue. When Chiti moved to Las Vegas from his home country in 1997, he never imagined where he would be today, but with a lot of hard work and dedication he’s found success in an industry, and city, he loves. “Vegas—it’s fun and fast-paced,” he says. “I’ve always enjoyed this industry. I love the city. I’m happy with how things turned out.” –Kiko Miyasato

After weathering the past year, Absinthe is still strong
There’s a moment in Absinthe that perfectly captures the sense of joy, relief and victory that is being felt on the Las Vegas Strip these days, both by the talented entertainers in shows such as this one and by visitors returning to the city after too many months away. By Brock Radke
Duo Vector, the powerful acrobatic act consisting of Michal “Misha” Furmanczyk and Lukasz Szczerba, has been part of Absinthe in Las Vegas since opening night on April 1, 2011. Their performance is one of strength and balance, of making impossible movements and holds look graceful and effortless. And the final hold, where Szczerba is supporting Furmanczyk and all of his body weight with just one hand while Furmanczyk maintains a completely rigid plank position, is the most difficult and mind-blowing feat in

the act. Just when it seems like the two men won’t be able to keep it up, Szczerba slowly raises his left hand to his face and makes a small adjustment to his mask, pulling it up over his nose the same way all of us do. The audience explodes in laughter and applause. “We always did a little head turn to look at the audience in that part (of the act), so they can see we are doing this without any stress in our bodies,” Szczerba says. “But wearing the masks actually helps us, in a way, to show that it looks effortless and
that we can do this.” Indeed, “we can do this” has been a mantra that Las Vegas has clung to tightly over the past year as the pandemic has halted and slowed entertain-
ment in the Entertainment Capital of the World. But Absinthe has been one of the Vegas shows that returned to its stage as early and safely as possible, keep-

recruited from overseas by producer Speigelworld to relocate to Las Vegas and start something special in the big white spiegeltent in front of Caesars Palace. Szczerba and Furmanczyk were performing
together in a circus-style production in Munich when the call came to join Absinthe. After competing in acrobatic sports events for years in their native Poland, the duo joined forces and created
their signature act in 2008. “Usually you can easily determine which is the flyer and which is the base in an act like ours,” says Furmanczyk. “Lukasz will always be a bit bigger than me but we are still trying to match up to get to that perfect spot where we look equal. I’m very tall for a typical flyer and that makes it more difficult in a way for Lukasz because it affects our balance points.” Their physical similarities make the act unique, and that seemingly small detail represents the vision behind Absinthe. These performers believe that every aspect of the show and how the different acts come together is what makes the experience so special. “I think every act has some function in the show. Some have to be showstoppers, some have to be romantic, others have to be technical, but all the ones we have now and used to have fit perfect-

ly,” Szczerba says. “They have a specific role, and every time I see the show, I can’t believe how good it is and how the choreography and comedy all works together.”

seen the brother-sister duo perform many times. “When you sit in the front row and have these skaters spinning right in front of you, everybody has the same face because it’s such a dynamic
act,” he says. “I think (the) idea is to bring the most unique acts, something you won’t see anywhere else, so when you come to the show, you’ll always be surprised. It’s been uplifting for me, seeing the show grow so much, and now it’s so well-established in this city. To be a part of it is something we are proud of.” Pre-pandemic, Absinthe had moved to a seven-nights-a-week schedule and was surging as one of the most popular productions on the Strip. After fighting through COVID conditions, it has returned to form and is expected to add shows to the schedule and increase audience size soon. Until then, all your favorite acts are back in the spiegeltent, operating under safe and comfortable conditions for the ultimate Absinthe experience. The Gazillionaire and his band of beautiful, eccentric artists may be masked during their performances, but everyone can still clearly see how happy they are to be back onstage again, entertaining Las Vegas the way only they can.

In addition to enjoying a $59 prix fixe, three-course menu featuring lobster Benedict, creme brûlée French toast and other goodies, you cannot beat the view from the half-scale French landmark. How thoughtful! Check in for breakfast on the patio at Salt & Ivy (Aria, 877.230.2742) for a lovely start to Mother’s Day. The restaurant features humongous Dutch baby pancakes in several varieties—veggie, serrano ham and Mahon cheese, and a lemon curd and blueberry beauty that could even serve as a shareable dessert. Also at Aria, Bardot Brasserie (877.230.2742) practically specializes in decadent weekend brunches. One of the neatest is the French toast, a stacked-up concoction with brioche, vanilla bean mascarpone (num-num) and orgeat syrup, which you can enjoy amid the French café-style décor.

Maxie’s (The Linq Promenade, 702.754.4400) is also known for its daily brunch options, and Mom is sure to love over-the-top breakfast creations like cotton-candy pancakes with cotton candy cream cheese and cotton candy on top. We all know Mom is a stickler for the finer things, so head to Primrose (Park MGM, 702.730.6600). This French country house-inspired restaurant is so very pretty, and the restaurant’s all-you-can-drink prosecco and rosé packages will leave Mom very happy, indeed.
Although this isn’t a classic brunch, if you can score a reservation to one of the sittings at the 23rd-floor Tea Lounge (Waldorf Astoria, 702.590.8888), it makes a fabulous alternative. Scones, finger sandwiches, tea, gorgeous views— Mumsy will be in your pocket. Brunch at Border Grill (Mandalay Bay, 702.632.7200) is just fabulous, whether or not the parent is involved—but given that we’re talking about Mother’s Day, she’d better be! Rainbow cauliflower tacos, vampiro shrimp tacos, blood orange margaritas and a churro ice cream sandwich are just a few of the highlights. At Giada (The Cromwell, 855.442.3271), weekend brunch is a fave for mothers of all ages, especially ones that are fans of the celebrity chef. The restaurant features some of Giada De Laurentiis’ favorites, plus specialties like the Sunrise polenta waffles and the grilled cheese (unusual with a lemony twist, and quite amazing). CHRISTOPHER KENNEY WILL BE FOREVER ENSHRINED in the long legacy of live Vegas entertainment for portraying Edie in Cirque du Soleil’s epic cabaret Zumanity for more than a decade at New York-New York. Last fall, when the company decided the show would not be returning to the Strip, the veteran entertainer already had something new to work on. Kenney co-created Faaabulous! The Show, a new drag spectacle currently performing at Notoriety Live.
You actually launched Faaabulous before the pandemic hit Las Vegas. What was that like? A little over a year and a half ago, we did a workshop just to get it out of our heads, to stop talking about it and just do it. We did four shows at Ron DeCar’s Event Center downtown, to see if we had something, and the response was amazing. We felt excited and proud and thought we were ready to … try to get it into a casino. But doing 10 shows a week in Zumanity (caused it) to fall to the back burner for the next few months, and then COVID came.
And you did a bit of performing in the Drive-In Drag Show last summer, but when Cirque announced the closure of Zumanity, did that kick things into gear for this new project? Zumanity should have never, ever closed. That show was just stunning. I’ll miss the show deeply but it feels good to me to be able to move on and it feels good to be doing something. The funny thing is people coming to see me as Edie didn’t know I’m a dancer. I was a dancer my whole life until Zumanity, which was just an emcee role. So it feels good

We’re teaching people where it’s at and how to get there, where to park. We’re just coming out of the train station and hopefully it will be successful and we get more people in seats. We’ve had great audiences, we just need to get the word out more to tourists. Right now it’s mostly locals ... and the energy is great. You’ve got an amazing cast of drag artists and dancers. What do you think sets it apart from other drag shows? It’s all-live vocals and there are four-part harmonies,
which is really exciting. And we have some really fun and different songs, some more traditional and others more contemporary. We do a Dua Lipa song. Edie has a sort of ’60s vibe so some songs have a bit of a go-go feel. I’m sure you’re learning a lot, playing the role of producer and promoter and all that, but how does it feel just to be back onstage in front of live audiences? It’s really fun. I feel like my old self, my New York self, the guy who was just really excited to perform, like “What’s the next gig?” The creativity is really flowing and it feels really good, and there are just a lot of great vibes coming from the audience. It’s nice to feel that spin again. We give it to the audience and hopefully they like it and give it back to us, and it turns into this spinning magical thing.... It’s a great feeling.

You may notice some guests (including yourself) headed straight to the elevators. That’s because contactless check-in is no longer a thing of the future. At MGM Resorts International properties, check in on your phone when you get close to the resort, and you’ll be able to pay and get a digital key. You can also check in with a contactless kiosk options and in a more traditional front-desk option. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas to accommodate current social distancing requirements, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.
Hand sanitizer, everywhere! Every hotel is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer handwashing stations. You’ll notice that employees are masked and, if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, loading docks and other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.
Pools are open again, but operations are significantly different from before, and some capacity restrictions will be enforced. For example, at Wet Republic at MGM Grand and Liquid at Aria, reservations will be required for all hotel and nonhotel guests, and VIP sections will be separated to allow for currently required social distancing. In addition, rigorous cleaning protocols will be implemented.
What a difference a year makes! In 2020, there was little, if any, attendance allowed at sporting events across the country (and none whatsoever in Las Vegas sports venues once the shutdown of the Strip was announced). Now, not only are your favorite teams back, you can buy tickets! And popcorn! And beer! For example, the Vegas Golden Knights can now allow up to 9,000 fans at T-Mobile Arena, and that number may soon increase. Just make sure to be proactive in buying your ticket—demand is bound to be very high!
Experiences will vary depending on venue, but every effort is made to make the experience as safe as possible. For example, at Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort, you can now access a digital store directory on your phone. There’s also a digital coupon book with nearly 50 offers, which you can access by going to miraclemileshopslv.com. Another digital assist is available from Jules, the retail center’s chatbot, and she can be reached via text message, Facebook Messenger or the retail center’s website. And finally, QR codes make dining easy, as you can see the entire menu on your phone.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as some slot machines not being available right next to each other, congregating behind each other not allowed, plexiglass partitions between some machines and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. You will still be required to wear your mask. Casinos are required to have a plan to disinfect all the items needed to play, such as chips, cards, balls and dice.
The show experience will differ widely, depending on the venue. For example, Absinthe at Caesars Palace, which is performed in a tent, is currently not in the round. Rather, the audience faces one side of the theater, with the action taking place across from them. It has a 660-seat capacity, but as of press time offers 180 seats per show. And, of course, everyone is required to wear a mask, audience members and performers included. Temperature checks are still mandatory before entering, and the venue is sanitized before and after every performance. You can learn more about every show by calling the box office.
Most restaurants require reservations, although not all. Many will text or call when your table is ready, saving you the hassle of waiting in line. You’re required to wear your face mask until you reach your table. It may feel different, as tables have space between them to adhere to current social distancing regulations. At some restaurants, permanent menus are sanitized between each use. Condiments won’t simply be stored on the table, and are sanitized between customers. Bars will also be spacing patrons’ parties apart to respect current social distancing guidelines.

Although attractions in Vegas have really rebounded, sanitation is high. Social distancing is evident, with seemingly omnipresent markers denoting a safe distance, like Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens. And on New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with those from same party.
Nightclubs have returned, but operations have significantly changed. For example, at Omnia at Caesars Palace and Hakkasan at MGM Grand, touchless menus are the norm via scannable QR codes, and the venues are operated as lounges, with social distancing and mask-wearing enforced. Dance floors will be closed for now.
Las Vegas is getting closer and closer to full operation, but your safety is still the top priority. Here are a few more things you should know about efforts to make you as safe as possible. Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down, and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find
little bottles of amenities, but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and other guest services may not be entering your room unless requested. You must still wear your mask in public areas, including the casino. While the vaccine rollout has
been successful so far, precautions must still be taken. It’s also considerate of fellow guests and resort workers. When you ride elevators and escalators, there may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups
and try to ride with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars. When in lines, practice social distancing. Stay 6 feet from people other than your
travel companions whenever possible. Be patient—even though you are 6 feet apart, you’ll still be moving. When you depart, one of the best ways is to check-out on the TV in your room. Some hotels have check-out kiosks that are sanitized often.
